Just finished reading Imbalance, and I came up with a theory.
Liling and Yaling have similar names, while Ru stands out. While I’m sure this was deliberately done by Faith for narrative purposes, what if there’s an in-universe reason as well?
What if Ru’s name was originally Ruling, and Liling shortened it once it became clear Ru wasn’t a bender?
“You don’t get to have the -ling anymore, only benders get the -ling.”
It would be a sad yet plausible way for Liling to make Ru feel less special and less like family.
After all, the last thing Liling wants non-benders doing is ruling.

Prologue 2 is out! This time we have our introduction to the smart and deadly Yale. I like her. She's cool.
I'm still new to AO3 so if there's a way to change these chapters to prologues that would be great to know but until then I guess I have no choice but to refer to them on there as chapters. Oh well.

The territorial history of Armenia and Azerbaijan
“Atlas of the Ethno-Political History of the Caucasus”, Arthur Tsutsiev, Yale University Press, 2014
The Armenian historical view centers on the global threat associated with the expansion of Turkic-speaking tribal groups into former Armenian territories, including Artsakh (Karabakh). Today's Azerbaijan is itself largely the former Caucasian Albania, a land which became Christian in the middle of the 4th century, submerged from the 11th century by Turkish invasions and which, in the 19th century, completely disappeared, transformed into a territory Turkish and Muslim.
Azerbaijan comes from the Democratic Republic of Azerbaijan of 1918-1920, created following Turkish intervention and taking its name from a Persian region located further south. This part of Eastern Transcaucasia, incorporated into Russia between 1803 and 1828, is in fact a former Persian territory with an indigenous sedentary Armenian population and a nomadic Turkish-Kurdish population who arrived later.
After the First World War, the Armenians would not have a state in the former Ottoman territories but a small formerly Russian territory around the city of Yerevan, southwestern part of the Transcaucasian Federative Democratic Republic (April -May 1918) which takes the name of the Democratic Republic of Armenia. From June 1920, the Kemalist Turkish nationalists began negotiations with the Soviets and the demarcation of the borders of the Armenian Soviet Socialist Republic (born December 2) was ultimately to the detriment of the Armenians themselves, since it did not does not include Karabakh, included entirely in Azerbaijan, at the insistent request of the Turks.
From then on, the Armenians are a people who have the particularity of being deprived of a large part of their historical territory even though it dates back to the 9th century BC with the kingdom of Urartu and its territorial peak dates from the end of the 2nd century BC when King Tigranes dominated a territory stretching from the Caspian to the Mediterranean.

🍁 Books To Read This Fall
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
If you love books with a dark academia vibe, here are my recommendations for this fall!
🟣 The Secret History - Richard grew up in a lower class family. His life changes when he attends a prestigious university and befriends an exclusive academic group of rich students led by an elusive and mysterious professor. The group of college friends end up killing one of their own friends. The story details how they got to that point, how they covered up the murder, and how they all personally suffered after the event.
Tumblr media
🟣 Ninth House - a girl who is a dropout and delinquent has the ability to see the supernatural. She gets recruited by Yale University to join their secret Ninth House alongside two other students. The trio is then responsible for keeping check of Yale's 8 secret societies who frequently dabble in dark magic. When a girl ends up dead on campus, the trio set out to figure out which secret society was behind the incident.
Tumblr media
🟣 The Atlas Six - a group of 6 magicians, considered to be the best in the world, are recruited by Atlas Blakely. Atlas is the caretaker of the mysterious Library of Alexandria, the magical library said to hold all the knowledge in the world. The 6 will compete for a year by researching complex topics such as wormholes, dreams, dimensions, the subconscious, time manipulation, and so forth. Only 5 will be allowed to join this secret society. 1 will be eliminated. All 6 contestants are witty, hungry, and manipulative. Alliances change, betrayals take place, and no one is to be trusted.
Tumblr media
🟣 The Silent Patient - a psychotherapist takes on a case of a famous painter who killed her husband and never uttered a word after. He goes down a spiral of uncovering clues and solving the mystery of what drove the woman to kill her husband.
Tumblr media
🟣 The Ecliptic - a famous painter who has lost her creative touch agrees to stay at a seceret island in Turkey, that is a rehab for broken down artists. She spends years in this isolated facility, disconnected from the outside world, amongst other artists, trying to create a new masterpiece, and rekindle her flame.
🌸 All of these books are my faves!

Hey just learned you are in CT too! Hello! I wanted to point out a cool place to check in CT. Under the Yale Medical Library in New Haven there is a small museum called the Crushing Brain Center. It has brains in jars, skeletons of all kinds and a lot of research. You can find out more info, including how to get there, by looking it up on Atlas Obscura.
that sounds very cool! unfortunately i was only visiting for a short time and due to an ancient curse on my bloodline im only allowed to do uncool stuff that sucks when im in connecticut

The atla comics were so well done and I love them with my whole entire heart BUT I just want to talk about imbalance… and why did they leave us hanging ?!??!???
(I’m going to honest, I am not following new comic release updates and I read this in 2021 and then again like a month ago.. so I may be forgetting stuff. but you win some you lose some)
like okay you send Yaling and What’s-Their-Moms-Name to prison BUT WHERE THE HELL DOES RU GO??? she’s my little baby and even though her entire family is sent to prison for crimes against humanity she deserves the world 🥺🥺
Like Homegirl stood up to her tyrannical mother (which didn’t work and then her mom started earthbending her into the ground … what ever 🙄) but the point is she TRIED and she deserved so much more but the people creating this thing are just leaving us with no idea what happens to her next????????? I’m sorry that’s my child
Is she put into the adoption system???? Does she join the kyoshi warriors (tbh, that’s how it is in my own headcannons)??? WHAT HAPPENS TO RU ?!!
I also have no one to talk to about this (all of my friends are uninterested in atla, or the comics) and my old roommate’s boyfriend who was interested in the series refused to read an online version of the comic that I pirated 😢 so PLEASE I BEG YOU to flood my inbox with theories I NEED someone to discuss this with and I SO could go on and on for ages about Ru and what I think happens to her next

I completely abandoned any pretense about reaching my yearly reading goal this December, but I did manage to read one TBR book per month and read 50 of the books I wanted to in 2022, so I’m counting the year as a win. And I got close to the goal, anyway, at least if you include the picture books. (I do not like to include the picture books.) This month also included surprise highlights, surprise disappointments, and not one, but two, history books, which I feel like I never do.
December also, obviously, included a book haul. I got a couple books I asked for for Christmas, a couple books that came from the “give everyone an essay about my tastes” wishlists, and The Atlas Six, which arrived at work too damaged to sell but is still perfectly readable and it had been recommended by a friend…. The highlight is Weirdos of the Universe Unite!, however. I read this at least three times as a kid, via the public library, and I’m pretty sure we can credit my love of urban fantasy to it. That one’s actually part of my birthday haul, but the postal system got in the way. Very excited to (hopefully) reread it in 2023!
The Mummy! - Jane C. Webb Louden A plan to resurrect a mummy somehow upends the monarchy and everyone’s love lives. Melodramatic satire on a grand scale. - Egyptian secondary character
Beneath Another Sky - Norman Davies A world tour of countries subsumed by the colonial West and the ways they’re rebuilding after. - diverse nations and peoples covered - warning: colonial mindsets 1491 - Charles C. Mann An examination of what is known about pre-contact life in the Americas, versus what has often been taught and believed. - Indigenous subject matter - warning: racists, genocide
The Great Believers - Rebecca Makkai Yale is trying for a bequest to his gallery while navigating a relationship and watching his friends die of AIDS. Thirty years later, Fiona is searching for her daughter and reckoning with how Yale’s friend-group has affected her life. - largely 🏳️‍🌈 cast, Jewish protagonist, Jewish secondary character, Black secondary character - warning: deaths from AIDS, period-typical homophobia, including apathy and hate crimes
Books and Libraries - Andrew Scrimgeour, ed. A collection of poetry dedicated to the love of books.
The World We Make - N.K. Jemisin The boroughs of New York thought they’d fought their biggest battle, but then a populist politician comes to town. - ensemble cast containing Black, Indigenous, Indian, Latina, and 🏳️‍🌈 protagonists, Black author, #ownvoices for Blackness
Don't Fear the Reaper - Stephen Graham Jones Jade Jennifer Daniels returns to Proofrock the week a serial killer escapes in a blizzard. Out in February. - Blackfoot protagonist, Indigenous secondary characters, Black secondary character, disabled secondary characters, Blackfoot author, #ownvoices for Blackfoot representation - warning: death, gore, animal death
Grumpy New Year - Katrina Moore with Xindi Yan (illustrator) Daisy’s going to China to visit her Yeh-Yeh for Lunar New Year! Daisy should have slept—but she didn’t. - Chinese cast
The Golden Spoon - Jessa Maxwell Six contestants, two hosts, one world-famous baking show. And a body. Out in March. - ensemble cast containing Black, Latina, neurodivergent, and 🏳️‍🌈 characters
Reread:
The Jolly Christmas Postman - Allan Ahlberg with Janet Ahlberg (illustrator) A postman delivers Christmas mail to the fairy tale and nursery rhyme residents of his village.
Currently reading:
A Killing In Costumes - Zac Bissonnette Jay and Cindy just got an offer that might save their movie memorabilia business. Unfortunately, their competitor has turned up dead and that might sink everything. - 🏳️‍🌈 protagonists
The Penguin Complete Sherlock Holmes - Arthur Conan Doyle Victorian detective stories - major disabled character
 - warning: colonialism, racism

( MELISA PAMUK / 32 / CIS WOMAN / SHE/HER ) — did you see THE IA DETECTIVE ASSIGNED TO HOPE MERCER’S CASE, AILYA ŞAHIN, wandering around the mercer hollow today? i heard around town that the INTERNAL AFFAIRS DETECTIVE is RESILIENT and METICULOUS, but also INSENSITIVE and HEADSTRONG. people say that they remind them of TO-DO LISTS, THE SMELL OF OLD BOOKS, and A BLAKE LIVELY POWER SUIT, but how well can you ever really know someone in mercer hollow? ( admin jay / 26 / mst /  she/her )

character inspo: chloe decker (lucifer), temperance brennan (bones), amy brookheimer (veep), katara (atla), lisa simpson (the simpsons), belle (beauty and the beast), monica (friends)
ailya was born in turkey and into the lap of luxury. her mother was the classic combination of an heiress and a socialite, and her father was the founder of a successful petrochemical company. her mother obtained dual citizenship when ailya was a toddler so that she could pursue ailya's dance career in new york and los angeles. for the first thirteen years of her life, ailya lived and breathed dance. she was homeschooled in order to spend extra time in her company’s studio, and she was a national title holder for most of her life. her mother was convinced that she could have a lifelong career in dance and a future in modeling.
ailya, however, disagreed. she was a serious child; the kind of kid who always used the steps to get into the pool (( after checking the water temperature first, of course )). she tried to get control of her life in high school. she devoted countless hours to her academic interests in order to get into an ivy league school for pre-law. her mother was devastated. she was only allowed to go if she chose a school close to their pent house in new york.
she earned her undergrad from columbia so that her mother could ensure that she still spent time in the dance studio before and after classes. quinn wriggled out from under her thumb when she graduated early and was accepted into yale for law school. her parents footed the insanely expensive tuition and rent bills in exchange for a promise that when she got this 'working girl' fantasy out of her head, she'd return to have children and marry someone of her parents' choosing. aiyla quit dance, so she had to appease one of their dreams for her future.
she grew disillusioned with the law very quickly once realized it wasn't actually about right and wrong or justice, especially when most of her colleagues belonged behind bars with their clients. she made a career change into internal affairs in state that was supposed to be less corrupt than new york in her best attempt to make sense of the u.s. justice system.
✧*・゚𝒂𝒃𝒐𝒖𝒕
aiyla is of the opinion that if you want something, you have to work for it. there aren’t any excuses in life, so either put up or shut up. she takes Extreme offense to anyone who throws away opportunities by messing around.
she’s v cordial at work, so she can come off as cold. she thinks that personal lives should be kept out of the workplace. of course, aiyla has no personal life to talk about so that’s an easy motto for her live by lmao.
she’s fiercely loyal to the few friends she has.
aiyla isn't mean intentionally, but she doesn’t know how to sugarcoat things or understand why some people would be sensitive to criticism. she grew up with a hyper-critical mom, so she thinks that’s the best way to improve, and that she’s being helpful when she’s being harsh lmao–but her goal isn’t ever to hurt someone’s feelings. she’s very honest and genuine, but not tactful.
she definitely lacks an ability to understand people who think differently than she does, and she is, of course, always right.
she’s totally ruled by logic and reason. her loyalties lie with concrete evidence adn reason above all else.
she can often come off as arrogant. she doesn’t brag or flex, but she’s definitely not humble lmao. she is definitely aware that she’s smart and beautiful lmao, and she’s far more likely to say, “i know,” than, “thank you,” to a compliment.
she hasn’t danced since she was 19, and it’s entirely to prove a point to her mom even though she did love dancing before her mom became her momager. *you’re doing amazing, sweetie*
she’s v embarrassed that she wanted to be a ballerina when she was eight bc how immature and unrealistic. it’s not like she was four.
she has a dog who she loves more than any human. she’s a german shepherd named lizzie (after elizabeth bennet of course).
she loves art and poetry history. she’s also really into the history of fashion and fashion in general. most of her money (that doesn’t go into a 401k and her investment portfolio) goes towards art pieces and handbags.
she views relationships as a basic tier in maslow’s hierarchy of needs, similar to food or shelter. to her, sex is just a means to an orgasm, and orgasms are occasionally necessary to release tension. so ,,, she’s never had a romantic partner lmao, and she’s not interested in any unnecessary distractions from her work.
𝕨𝕒𝕟𝕥𝕖𝕕 𝕔𝕠𝕟𝕟𝕖𝕔𝕥𝕚𝕠𝕟𝕤 !!
best friends: ( m, f, nb ), childhood friends: ( m, f, nb ), fwb: (m, f, nb), casual hookup ( m, f, nb), work rivals: ( m, f, nb ), enemies: ( m, f, nb )
all the connections tbh. hmu or like this and i’ll hit you up !!
