O senior pen user! I have been a dedicate of pencils for years but finally found a pen I like (Staedtler triplus fineliner). How do I tell when to stop using the pen? It seems wasteful if ink still comes out, even if it's a pain/not fun to use anymore. And if I like these sharp points, small bodies - is there a refillable/fountain pen I should investigate?
If the pen's getting scratchy it's time for a new one. Scratchiness means the tip - AFAIK Triplus Fineliners are fibre-tipped - has worn down, or there's not enough ink coming out to properly lubricate the contact between tip and paper. Either way it's refill or (unless recyclable) landfill.
*****
Check Goulet Pens and Jet Pens for refillable fountain pens with fine nibs.
It's possible to experiment without spending very much, for instance the Jinhao 993 Shark from Goulet is $3.95. I might get one of these for @dduane, because of Ed-related Reasons. :->
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Platinum Preppy from Jetpens is $7.00...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
...and the Pilot Penmanship, also from Jetpens, is $10.00.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
All are refillable using cartridges or (AFAIK) a convertor for bottled ink.
Personal opinion: in my experience Pilot nibs at the cheap end of the range have been consistently superior to how they might reasonably perform for the price. Maybe I've just been lucky, however DD's two Pilot Metropolitans continue the "better than paid for" trend.
I'm pretty sure both Jet and Goulet could refine the search even further if you emailed them with a query like "What (inexpensive) fountain pen writes as fine as a Staedtler Triplus Fineliner?", although my recommendations may already fit the bill. :->
I've bought stuff unavailable in Europe from both companies - those Pilot Metropolitans had stub and fine nibs, for instance; for some reason the Pilot MR equivalent over here is medium-only - and they were very prompt and friendly even though my orders were just small ones from a customer unlikely to be frequent.
Hope This Helps!

One of the most important things a writer can do.
Write in a notebook.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Writing in a notebook uses a different part of your brain than using your phone. It's completely different wiring.
You have to slow down and focus your thoughts. Writing and seeing what you've written on paper ingrains it in your mind and can help you remember it better.
You don't need to worry whether your battery is going to die or if there's somewhere you can plug in.
And you won't shriek as loudly if you spill coffee on it.
Tumblr media
Your handwriting doesn't have to be pretty or intelligible to anyone besides yourself (no one can read mine, not even my editor and best friend; I have a personal "shorthand" so I can write quickly).
Get yourself an inexpensive spiral-bound notepad, a small one that can fit in your pocket. Buy an inexpensive pen; Bic has plenty (I prefer ones with click buttons so I don't have to uncap). Carry them with you everywhere, for whenever an idea may strike.
I write the month, day, and year on every note, and the months and year on the inside cover of the notepad. That way I can put them in order when they're full, and refer back to them a lot easily ("What was that thing I wrote last summer . . .?")
Sure, you'll end up with a pile of notepads, with ideas you may not use. But you might use them in the future. And a bunch of notebooks full of ideas, thoughts, observations, and opinions is a lot more satisfying than things saved on your phone.

She suffocated herself with their eyes pressing into her skin, rolled her feet and tasted the prickly apple of sin.
Whilst they tore out her instrument of speech, as they ripped out the highest string she sang in the tune of desire and he pretended she won the sword fight, whispered words of affection, ran his sharp thoughts over her skin like they were dogs claws
Till it oozes out, she is weak in his arms, lips warm from his temper
his eyes speak the language of unfamiliar and societal truths
Only to reassure how holy the feminine kin can be.

“E” or “O”...?
A comment in the “It Was Sugar!” post wondered if "castor" with an "O" was the American spelling for caster sugar, or a typo.
It’s a typo, but one with an interesting history.
*****
“CastOr” is the spelling when referring to castor oil (pressed from castor beans) and, even older, a hat made from felted beaver fur (Castor canadiensis).
Fans of historical fiction might occasionally read that a character “doffed their castor” - meaning, raised or removed their hat in a token of good manners to ladies or respect to superiors.
"CastEr" is the spelling for a container (or its contents) for strewing, sprinkling or throwing, as in "cast aside" or “cast a shadow”.
In homophones (same-sounding words) such as sow / sew, rein / rain, peal / peel, breach / breech etc., just one letter gives the different meaning.
Words like “cast”, however, depend on context - cast a spell, cast a bell, cast a role, arm in a cast, cast in an eye, cast of the show...
English is like that.
*****
Besides sugar casters for sprinkling sugar, there were “sand casters” of wood, ceramic or metal, which contained the powder used to blot ink before or instead of blotting-paper.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This powder might be fine sand or ground sandarac resin (two reasons for “sand caster”) but also ground cuttlefish bone, or ground pumice which was called “pounce” - the French for pumice stone is “pierre ponce” - in which case the container was called a “pounce pot”.
Blotting a letter with sand or pounce may even be the origin of the phrase “done and dusted”, meaning “job all done”, though that might just derive from a room or house completely cleaned, so YMMV.
Its use is often seen in historical films, though they often get the end of the action wrong by showing writers blowing or shaking the powder off onto the floor.
In fact blotting powder was re-usable, and was poured off the paper back into the pot, whose top was often funnel-shaped to make that easier.
Tumblr media
Using sand or pounce continued until fairly recently: here’s a silver writing set - inkstand with matching inkwell and pounce pot / sander - hallmarked 1908.
Tumblr media
Fountain-pens were already in use (mass-produced since 1880) though prone to leakage until that problem was fixed in, surprise,1908, so it’s not surprising that this handsome set relied on dip pens. Also, it was probably on the desk of An Important Person who had to write little more than signatures.
The pounce pot is a curious anachronism; I’ve read one source suggesting pounce and sand continued in use because they was cheap, but penny-pinching doesn’t seem an issue here.
Maybe used blotting-paper was considered unsightly, whether as a sheet or mounted on one of those rocker-blotters still used occasionally when signing treaties.
Tumblr media
Or maybe pounce was considered more secure; if blotting-paper picks up a good reverse impression of the writing, it can be mirror-read; there’s no way to mirror-read anything from powder.
Writer Note; a fantasy story could mention a spell which makes the pounce or sand reassemble itself as the words it blotted, so re-use is done for more than mere economy. Each time pounce is poured back into the pot it gets a thorough shaking, that world’s version of a micro-cut paper shredder or multi-pass disc wipe.
This was originally about spelling variations, so yet again I seem to have wandered a bit off-topic
I do like the silver desk-set, though.

My new Kakimori Indigo Urushi brass (and steel!) nibs and holder arrived. Which means… I can finally swatch all of these bottles of ink I’ve been waiting to open into my Col-O-Ring! Yaaaaay.
Also, send coffee. This will take me all day. Sigh.
