Villaintine's Day 2023 Writeblr Award Ceremony
Tumblr media
A Black Rose For The Pretty Writer
Tumblr media
A token of our villainous appreciation!
Awarded to the following users:
@puddleslimewrites for their snippet: Deadly Distraction 🖤
@world-of-fire-and-flight for their snippet: Pair of Dorks
@heroes-villains-side-blog for their snippets: "Welcome to the Team Mr. Henchman. You Start Monday." and Fire & Darkness
------------
Orange Lily
Tumblr media
Orange lilies represent hatred so of course it should go to snippets with a great nemesis dynamic!
Awarded to the following users:
@puddleslimewrites for their snippet: Deadly Distraction 🖤
------------
Iron Villain
Tumblr media
When Villain is dead set on their goal, like really dead set -- it's honestly impressive the writer still makes us root for them somehow.
Awarded to the following users:
@puddleslimewrites for their snippet: Deadly Distraction 🖤 for making us root for Supervillain even though they're implied to be a murderer!
------------
Of One's Own Free Villain
Tumblr media
When the hero does the villainous thing on their own! Outside of their villain's influence! Showcasing that the nemesis bond goes deeper than just regular face-to-face meet-ups.
Awarded to the following users:
@world-of-fire-and-flight for their snippet: Pair of Dorks where SPOILER Hero is the one to initiate the celebration of their nemesis-aversary!
------------
A Hero Makes The Villain
Tumblr media
We all know a hero is absolutely nothing without their villain. Like, literally. They would not be a hero without someone to antagonize them, so pat your villainous selves on the back for keeping heroes in a job! But sometimes, it happens, that a hero does have a tiny minscule influence on the villain.
Awarded to the following users:
@world-of-fire-and-flight for their snippet: Pair of Dorks where Hero's heroically sweet nature makes Villain want to be a better villain and partake in future villainous celebrations! Well, it's just nemesis anniversaries, but no accomplishment is too small!
------------
If Love Doesn't Scare You, No Evil Thing Will
Tumblr media
Loving someone or knowing someone loves you can be terrifying...but also a great motivating force, and heroes and villains are no different. The only question is: how does it change their agenda, if at all? Love is also said to be the most powerful weapon of all, so if that doesn't scare you...no villainous scheme will! (You thought we were going for it, didn't you?)
Awarded to the following users:
@heroes-villains-side-blog for their snippet: "Welcome to the Team, Mr. Henchman. You Start Monday."
Even though Spectre may not admit her feelings for Henchman, she knows they're there...now if only she could embrace them like the Big Red Button That's Actually Green😜
------------
Villainville
Tumblr media
We all know that found family is a popular trope for a reason (it's just so wholesome!), but what about those found families who are made up of rogues? We're talking master criminals, thieves, grifters, the whole lot. Welcome to Villainville: House of Rogues!
Awarded to the following users:
@heroes-villains-side-blog for their snippet: "Welcome to the Team, Mr. Henchman. You Start Monday."
CRIME FOUND FAMILY! CRIME FOUND FAMILY! CRIME FOUND FAMILY! Not only did Henchman find a villainous family, but Spectre and Codex are building an evil empire that's sure to be the baddest, most close-knit villain group ever😈
------------
In Darkest Day, In Blackest Night...
Tumblr media
This one's for the scenes that have us biting our nails, sitting on the edge of our seats, and when things aren't going in our favorite character's favor. Whether you enjoy stories where the villain wins (or in some cases, corrupt heroes), or not, you've got to admit the ✨suspense✨ is killer.
Awarded to the following users:
@heroes-villains-side-blog for their snippet: Fire & Darkness
Speaking of being on the edge of your seat, this one will leave you guessing and have you questioning everything you know about heroes and villains. Did we witness a corrupt hero, or the tragic fall of someone trying to do what was just for the good of the many? We may never know...
------------
Twist Our Heartstrings
Tumblr media
AHHHH THE FEELS! From plot-twists you didn't see coming to plot-twists you feared would come that still utterly gutted you, there are a lot of things that can tug on your heartstrings when you're really invested in a story.
Awarded to the following users:
@heroes-villains-side-blog for their snippet: Fire & Darkness
Ow my heart🖤 Not only did you have us sitting on the edge of our seats, you made us feel invested in such a way that broke our hearts to watch the fall of our new favorite blorbo.
------------
Last Villain And Testament
Tumblr media
The heroes won. The villain is defeated. And yet...Are they? Are they really defeated? Did the heroes really win? Or were the heroes the villains all along? It may be the final act, but we all know it's never over until the villain laughs manically.
Awarded to the following users:
@heroes-villains-side-blog for their snippet: Fire & Darkness
While we deal with the fallout of an ambiguous ending, there's a certain finality here that leaves us wary of Fire Star and wondering just what the Dark One would say if given the chance to. Maybe there's no true evil or true good here, but there's certainly a dynamic and we're in love!

Showed my mom this image with almost no context and from the following conversation I got the quote  “The depths of my failure as a parent are nowhere, nowhere more evident than you and your sister's creative endeav- tortures! They're not endeavors! Your creative tortures.”
I will wear this as a badge of honor.

"I can see dead people." He mentions with a shrug, using the chopsticks to fish more noodles into his mouth.
Dick stares at him. "Huh."
"Is that why you help?" He asks, getting more spring rolls.
"Yeah. Once someone becomes a ghost, word gets out quick, and they come to me. Always tatling about unfairness and justice." The kid waves the words around, rolling his eyes.
Dick just pretens to he uninterested, despite his mind racing at the new info. He is piecing past moments together, every shadow leaping away, every note with tips, leads and—
Huh.
"Do you... like it? Doing all that?" Richard approaches thus carefully, brows furrowed at the kid opposite of him.
Danny moves his head, giving a 'so-so' answer. "It's not much to like, I can see ghosts, and they know it and use it. If it brings them to peace or whatever– well, that's just a plus."
Dick stares. He places his chopsticks down and looks at Danny worried.
In turn, the kid sighs. "Sometimes gifts become curses the longer you have it."
And Dick understands.
Mind made up, he throws a pair of keys at the kid, watching fondly as the other catches them with confusion.
"Next time use these, instead of entering through the window."
Danny mock-salutes with a shit eating grin. "Yes, Officer grayson."

Baby's First Awards Eligibility Post!
In which the author gleefully shares her first awards eligibility post.
As an actual published writer with multiple publications out in the world this year, I feel confident enough to put together my very first awards eligibility post! I have no expectation of even being nominated for anything, but as one of my favorite gay pirates on HBOMax’s “Our Flag Means Death” said just this past summer: “Actually, I think I’m just so-so, but I’ve decided to carry myself like…

EDITED TO ADD: St. Louis University posted the 2023 St. Louis Literary Award ceremony; Neil’s talk starts about 40 minutes in. (Thanks DanGuyF)
Tumblr media
In an interview before the event [Neil] Gaiman said that when he started writing comics, he “wasn’t even in the gutter.”
He said: “I used to look up and admire the people in the gutter. The science-fiction people were in the gutter, the children’s literature people were in the gutter, too, and I was so far down, I was in the storm drain.”
Great writeup by Jane Henderson from the St. Louis Post-Dispatch sharing highlights of Neil’s talk at the St. Louis Literary Award!

Major Shōgun Ep. 9 spoilers:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yabushige truly gives meaning to the term 'rat bastard'. Toranaga factored his inevitable betrayal into his plans, and Yabushige STILL somehow managed to spring a surprise betrayal. If it wasn't so horrible, it would be impressive how two-faced the man manages to be.
So, about Mariko .... (I'm actually glad I randomly got spoiled the day before seeing this episode and was prepared otherwise I would not have survived what happened to her.)
My take ... Mariko's death was 'pointless' in the same way Nagakado's death was pointless. Nagakado died a senseless death that failed to accomplish anything, but then Toranaga gave his son's death meaning and honour by thanking Nagakado for dying to earn him some time. Mariko blocking the door with her own body served nothing in the sense that it wouldn't prevent Ishido's men from getting in nor did it change the fate of anyone else in that room. But by choosing to sacrifice herself like that and die at the hands of Ishido's agents, Mariko derailed Ishido's plan to take her captive and ensured she'd become a martyr to Toranaga's cause. Mariko not only fulfilled Toranaga's plan, she exceeded it.
Mariko's mission was to get the hostages freed or die trying and in so doing force Ishido to dishonour himself by openly revealing his hand instead of keeping up the facade that he's not keeping anyone against their will. Mariko did both: got the hostages freed and died a martyr to the cause. (Yes, Ishido may choose to turn around and keep the hostages anyway instead of releasing them as agreed, but in doing so he'll only dishonour himself further and lose more support.)
When Toranaga gets to Osaka, he'll have the moral highground and the support of the other samurai families who didn't want Mariko to die like that and who now see Ishido for what he really is. (Also, when the time comes, I think the Christian Regents will now be prepared to turn against Ishido.)
And Mariko got what she'd wanted all along: dying with honour in response to what happened to her family. Her death was meaningful. She served her duty like her father told her to. And she got to spend her last night being at peace and experiencing something like happiness with John.
Buntaro dishonoured her for so many years by keeping her alive for selfish reasons and when he finally offered her the release of death, it was also for selfish reasons. Buntaro was only willing to allow her to finally die because HE wanted to die then and wouldn't be affected by her death since he'd be gone too. Buntaro ordered Mariko to stay alive. John asked Mariko to stay alive many times, and when she ultimately wouldn't change her mind, he not only accepted and respected her decision, he honoured it by offering to second her. Mariko died knowing John finally understood. He finally got it.
Mariko died, and now she is finally free.
Tumblr media
EDIT to add:
She died calling herself Akechi Mariko instead of Toda Mariko. She disavowed her husband and her unwanted marriage with her last words. She was truly freeing herself!!!

look, i know everyone said that the new interview with the vampire show was incredible but holy shit i was not prepared for how incredible this show is
like, not only is louis interesting now, he is incredibly compelling! his once-bland internal dilemma is now given actual weight because it's not just the same old Thou Shalt Not Kill But I Am Hungry story, it's tempered through his righteous fury at how black people have been treated all these years, how many people have wronged him and laughed and expected him to laugh along, how his ties to the community that once saved him are now turning to nooses around his throat, how his family that he once provided for and relied on have now come to fear him
that, combined with his explicit homosexuality, and with lestat being the only one who seemed to accept him and love him for all that he is, and how that is both comforting and incredibly toxic and combined with sam reid's insane charisma and mania and gravity as lestat that make it completely understandable why louis would still be drawn to him in spite of everything
and how they've used the changes from the original to this one to examine how memory shifts regarding someone who was so intense and formative in your life even if they were ultimately so controlling and abusive but still left such huge gouges in your personality like knives
like
fuck
this is the best-written show i have seen in a long time like this is top-tier writing holy shit
