How to Write a Contest Winner
Contests are a great way to get your name out there as a writer, gain credibility points for publishers, and sometimes earn a little bit of money or a prize along the way. I have submitted work to many, many contests, and now I’m on the editorial team for a magazine hosting its own!
                Here’s what I’ve learned about contest-winning writing:
1. It pushes the envelope
The biggest disappointment for me was learning that contests aren’t just looking for good writing. It’s not enough to just be a good writer—to win, you’re creating a piece that holds social, political, or cultural meaning.
This means it has some sort of point, some reason for existing. It tells something important and new about the world or is commenting on a real issue.
Writers tend to connect these real issues within society through personal experiences or stories told in an artistic/creative style. Creative non-fiction (if applicable) is great for this, but you can imbue these themes in any type of writing.
2. It has a clear point or theme
Your first step should be to create your theme. What are you saying about the world? What is it now, and what should it be? Solid themes may be: There isn't enough support for immigrants coming into the US, the schooling system ignores LGBTQ+ students getting bullied, traditional values ruin modern relationships with family across generations, etc.
3. It takes risks
This one is huge. Maybe I should have put it first on the list—consider this as a reward for getting this far in the post haha. Contest-winning writing does not (typically) look like traditionally published writing (this of course definitely depends where the contest is being held. It is true for many literary magazines, but may not be true everywhere. Double check what the formatting requirements are where you’re submitting). It can—but us editors want to read something we haven’t seen before. I want to be surprised and delighted by the chances and risks you take.
An example of this is playing with the form or design of the writing. Play with the space on the page—don’t just stick to how books are typically formatted. Go for the themes that push a boundary, opt for the unsafe ending.
This is the other side to ‘pushing the envelope’, your writing should also push the envelope on how we write. Know the rules of the game, break them tactfully and you’ve got a first placer.
4. But it also follows the rules
Best way to lose a contest is to ignore or forget the guidelines/rules of the contest. If there’s a theme, adhere to the theme. If they want you to keep your name off your submission, make sure you do so. If they need every submission to be under 1000 words, yours better be 999 or under.
The guidelines are usually found where you submit your work and they are the key to having a shot at the contest. If your piece doesn’t adhere to the rules, you may not get a second chance. Don’t waste your time and follow the guidelines!
Good luck! (Expect a follow-up post on contests to submit soon!)

Journey to the West Discord Art and Writing Competition
The Journey to the West discord is hosting an art and writing competition centering around Sun Wukong.
Prompt:
Multiversal mash up! - Have one or more of your favorite Monkey Kings interacting with other versions of himself.
These include the Wukong from the original JTTW novel or unofficial sequels, as well as movies, TV shows, video games, or even your OC Wukong.
Details:
Art and writing only
NSFW content is NOT permitted
The contest runs from October 1st to the 31st.
The 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners will be announced on November 3rd.
Criteria:
Art: structure, color palette, background, foreground, framing
Writing: structure, wording, grammar, character accuracy
Discord Judges:
greencicadarchivest
SaltyBeans
Six-Eared Macaque [Six/InkyPie]
Prizes:
I will be offering three statues from my personal collection. The 1st place winner gets to choose what statue they like best.
The first is a traditional religious idol carved from wood. It is roughly 40 cm tall. It is worth several hundred dollars.
The second is a new ceramic statue just shy of 36 cm.
Tumblr media
The third is a vintage ceramic statue that is 35 cm.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Shipping:
The statues are free to the winners, but you must pay for the shipping. I will cover the initial cost.
The conservative estimate is $80 USD for shipping from Taiwan. But the actual cost might be lower given your location and if you don't mind a slower shipping method (i.e. by boat as opposed to plane). If you choose a faster method, then the cost obviously goes up.
Most importantly, you don't have to pay me back until after the statue arrives. And if you can't afford to pay the full cost all at once, you can divide it up into smaller payments. I don't want the shipping to scare off talented artists and writers.

Please reblog this so others can learn about the contest.

Tumblr media
Matt and Em were the ‘it’ couple. They were perfect for each other. Matt was on YouTube, and Em was in the music industry. They were loved by all, until one fatal date night in downtown LA.
They were in the car after dinner chatting, kissing, doing what couples do. They were having a great time, until Matt found a way to start an argument — about Em cheating.
“Matt, I don’t understand what you’re talking about! I never cheated, or have even thought about it!” Em exclaimed. She was getting mad at Matt, because she had never even thought of doing that to him. Matt has the love of her life.
“But you did, Em!”
Em let out a slight sob, was she going to lose her boyfriend? Over an argument about her cheating? Em was have mixed emotions to saw the least.
“Em, I know what you did! I know you cheated with Eric. I’m not as dumb as you think I am!” Matt had also started to cry — very small cries — he didn’t know why he was arguing with Em. Maybe he was jealous of Eric.
“Matt, if you just jealous or mad at Eric, tell me! I’ll stop talking to him for you. You know that I love you!” Em needed an explanation to why Matt was suddenly mad about Eric. Matt never had a problem with him before, up until now.
“Maybe we won’t work Em.” Matt whispered, his cries now a little louder.
“What?” Em chocked out, her sobs getting the best out of her. “What do you mean, Matt?”
“I mean, maybe this isn’t for us. Eric would be better for you. I mean look at me, Em.”
“Matt we can’t do this. Not now. Please.” Em looked at Matt through her wet eyelashes. Mascara now running down her face, her full face of makeup now ruined from crying.
“I’m sorry Em. We’re over. We can’t do this anymore.” Matt sobbed.
“Matt please!” Em was now sobbing with Matt. “We can work this out! I promise!”
Matt shook his head no, while unlocking his car. A small sign saying ‘get out of my car’
Em nodded at his action. Not wanting to, she left his car anyways. Em was now standing on the side of the road crying to herself.
— 2 months later —
Matt and Em had become strangers ever since that night. Matt blocked the girl on every social media platform. So fans knew they weren’t talking, or that something happened between the old ‘it’ couple.
Because of her experience, Em had made a song about her break up experience with Matt. It wasn’t a mean song, because deep down, she knew she still loved him. So the song was a soft song, lightly explained what she felt like.
The song title was “strangers.” She loved it with her heart, one of her favorite songs — mostly because it was about Matt.
But what Em didn’t expect was that her song was going to go viral on TikTok. She was scared because Em didn’t know if she wanted Matt to hear the song she wrote about him. But of course, he heard it. He loved the song, until he realized that his favorite ex, Em Winters, wrote it.

OFFICIAL WRITING CONTEST
Welcome to the Writeblr Summerfest’s Official Writing Contest! As the name implies, it’s a writing contest. It’s official! You pay to enter, you win physical prizes!
It also lasts ten days so make sure to get your writing hat on!
THE RULES
This contest has a 500 words minimum, and a 1k word maximum. It has a prompt, seen below, inspired by this years theme: haunted house.
It has three tiers of winners, as most traditional contests do, but everyone who enters will get a free promo.
The story must fit the prompt. The story must meet the word count criteria (between 500 and 1,000 words). The story can contain violence, foul language, blood/gore, but should not be overtly explicit.
It costs $5 to enter; cost of entry covers the prizes that are given out!
HOW TO ENTER
Write your story. Post it using the tag ‘summerfest contest’. In your original post, @ the summerfest blog – then send the post as a DM to the Summerfest blog so it can be properly cataloged. Please keep in mind this last step is the most important; if a link to the story post isn’t submitted via ask or DM, the story entry won’t be counted!
When you submit the link to your entry, you submit payment at the same time. This ensures that you never pay for an entry you end up not having the time to write.
THE PROMPT
You’re lost in the woods. You’ve been lost in the woods for hours. You see a light in the distance and run towards it. It’s a house, and someone is home! You run to it! The owner lets you come inside for shelter but… Something is strange. You just… Don’t feel safe.
The Prompt: You’re character is taking shelter in a house in the woods. What is their experience like? Keep in mind that the theme for the Summerfest is ‘haunted house’ and then go wild with how you fill it!
THE PRIZES
Let’s be honest, this is what everyone is waiting for! We’re going to break it down into a few important notes of consideration.
The contest accepts entries between the 20th of August ‘23 and the 30th of August ‘23. The winner will be announced on the 1st of September.
Prizes will be delivered between the 15h of September and the 20th of September.
1st Place: a brand new spooky plushie, plus a full collection of Summerfest Store items!
2nd Place: a full collection of Summerfest Store items! (Already gotten everything from the store? No problem, we’ll switch it with a different reward; a minkie keychain!)
But Katie, where is the picture of the item? Well, at present we have a $10 spooky plushie picked out as the reward (super cute reversible ghost!)… But if enough people enter the contest, we’ll be upgrading the prize to include either two stuffed animals, or a more expensive stuffed animal; this is the same practice that has been implemented each year, to ensure that the prize's delivered always match up to the amount of people who have entered!
All questions will happily be answered!

Read the YWP Novel Excerpt Contest Grand Prize Winner (13 and Under Age Group)!
Tumblr media
In February, we challenged you to submit a 400-word excerpt from your NaNoWriMo novels. From over 650 fantastic entries, we chose two Grand Prize Winners and four Runners-Ups. We hope you enjoy reading them as much as we did! (For more excerpts, check out this forum thread.)
A Kingdom of Embers and Ash by Hannah G.
I slip there unnoticed, and sure enough, Willow slumps against the fence. Her arm is through the hole, beads of blood glinting on the metal where it bit into her skin. She clutches at the twisted metal as though it is a portal to a better place.
And maybe... maybe it is.
But maybe it isn’t. And that’s what’s kept us from running for all these years.
"Hey, Wil," I whisper, sliding to the ground beside my sister, my anger forgotten, the pain in my cheek and my heart pushed into a place where I can’t feel it. My sister… she's more important than any of that, than anything. "What's going on?"
Willow turns to me suddenly, her face red and blotchy, streaked with tears. Her eyes are like that of a wild animal: cornered and desperate and terrified. It scares me.
"Sage, I can't!” she wails. “I can't stop it! I can't do it! I can't not do it!" Her voice is pitched with distress, a hysterical edge to it that scares me.
I look at her with concern creasing my brow, coating my voice. "Willow?"
But suddenly, it isn't Willow I'm looking at. It’s a fox, white as the first snow of winter, with oddly human, intelligent, pleading eyes.
Willow's eyes.
I freeze in shock, staring at the fox that is Willow.
At Willow, who is a fox.
At my whole life, my whole world, being upended before my eyes.
And then — my sister is back.
I can't stop the stories we've been told about the creatures outside the fence, magical and evil, from flashing through my mind. The stories that have always been applied to us. And even as I look at Willow, my Willow, who I have known and loved all my life, a small part of me can't help but wonder if they’re true, if we are what they say we are.
Witches. Demons. Monsters.
But then, with a twist of revulsion aimed at myself, at the thing that just went through my mind, at Oke Darm and everyone living in it for conditioning me to think that way, I banish the unfaithful thought from my head. Because this is Willow, my Willow–no matter what form she takes.
But I know I'm the only one who will see it that way.
"Wil," I whisper. "Willow... We have to run. Now."
Guest author judge Sarah Suk had this to say about A Kingdom of Embers and Ash:
"In just this short passage, I was able to get a sense of the world, the stakes, and the bond between the characters in a way that made me instantly root for them (protect them at all costs!). Impressively told with a voice that shines."
Tumblr media
Hannah Gumpert is in 8th grade, and admittedly spends way too much time absorbed in a book. When she isn’t reading, you can usually find her with her family, at a coffee shop with her friends, or writing and/or imagining her latest story, completely deaf to the world because she's living in another. Hannah wants to be a writer when she grows up — but she's not going to wait around until then.
