fav place to post free serial fiction?
hello kind folks of writeblr~
so, I’m searching for a home for Queensmen, my novel about war weapon elf gal, a cranky noble tied up with a death goddess, and a turncoat exile, and how they all try to pull a goddess back to earth and maybe fall in messy love in the process.
Is there somewhere that people favour to read or post free chapter-by-chapter fiction?
I know of Wattpad, AO3, & Royal Road, but that’s essentially it. (Queensmen is technically on RR, but doesn’t fit their genres and has not been getting much of an audience from that site.)
Thank you!! also sorry if this gets asked a lot i’m brand new here

Writeblr Questions
@writeblrsupport shared some questions today with a holiday greeting and I do love questions! Here's their post
How many wips have you worked on this year?
Too many. Six seriously, the rest have just been ideas.
How many wips have you completed?
None. Embarassing. I should have at least one finished but I don't.
Are you proud? ( you should be!)
Nope. No reason to be. Didn't even get a draft made for NaNo and just wrote fanfic. Still not a single wip completed.
What are your plans for the new year/2023 in general?
That depends on if I have a home then or not. I don't now, and it makes it difficult to plan for writing when I don't even have a wardrobe to put my clothes in. While I do wish to write and finish my mermaid wip because I believe it's such a cool idea, I don't know if I'll have the peace to write.
I do still write but it's only fanfic because I don't have all my notes for the original stuff since someone took my laptop and I don't like when my notes are in many places. I'd really like to get things in order and write that mermaid pirates wip though.
What can this blog do to help you more?
Nothing, you guys are doing great. Keep it up <3

I know I said I'd be more active, you know, like a liar, but I've had some personal stuff come up, mainly my Mom being in the hospital over Christmas and me staying with her and her not being 100% better after getting home.
But!
I'm setting up my queue for my 100+ reblogs in my drafts tonight so my blog will be active even if I'm not.
In other news, my creative writing group is collabing on a story set in Tudor Era England so if you got any resources on writing characters in that time period, it would be much appreciated if you could send them my way.
Happy New Years, y'all!

Open Storyteller Saturday (STS) question for writers: How do you make your worlds feel lived-in?

Note
😈 Has there been a point in a story where you did something just to be playfully mean to your readers?
Hello out there!
To be perfectly honest, I probably have been playfully mean (at least that is how it can be seen) as I write the build-up to the steamy parts of the first fanfic I wrote as both main characters are in a push-and-pull until they...yeah...get to it. *wink wink nudge nudge*
Happy writing!

Fantasy Guide to Building A Culture
Tumblr media
Culture is defined by a collection of morals, ethics, traditions, customs and behaviours shared by a group of people.
Hierarchy and Social Structures
Tumblr media
Within every culture, there is a hierarchy. Hierarchies are an important part of any culture, usually do ingrained that one within the culture wouldn't even question it. Hierarchy can be established either by age, gender or wealth and could even determine roles within their society. Sometimes hierarchy can may be oppressive and rigid whilst other times, ranks can intermingle without trouble. You should consider how these different ranks interact with one another and whether there are any special gestures or acts of deference one must pay to those higher than them. For example, the Khasi people of Meghalaya (Northern India), are strictly matrillineal. Women run the households, inheritance runs through the female line, and the men of the culture typically defer to their mothers and wives. Here are a few questions to consider:
How is a leader determined within the culture as a whole and the family unit?
Is the culture matriarchal? Patriarchal? Or does gender even matter?
How would one recognise the different ranks?
How would one act around somebody higher ranking? How would somebody he expected to act around somebody lower ranking?
Can one move socially? If not, why? If so, how?
Traditions and Customs
Tumblr media
Traditions are a staple in any culture. These can be gestures or living life a certain way or to the way a certain person should look. Traditions are a personal detail to culture, they are what make it important. Tradition can dictate how one should keep their home, run their family, take care of their appearance, act in public and even determine relationship. Tradition can also be a double edged sword. Traditions can also be restrictive and allow a culture to push away a former member if they do not adhere to them, eg Traditional expectations of chastity led to thousands of Irish women being imprisoned at the Magdelene Laundries. Customs could be anything from how one treats another, to how they greet someone.
How important is tradition?
What are some rituals your culture undertakes?
What are some traditional values in your world? Does it effect daily life?
Are there any traditions that determine one's status?
Values and Opinions
Tumblr media
Values and Opinions are the bread and butter of any culture. This is the way your culture sees the world and how they approach different life hurdles. These may differ with other cultures and be considered odd to outsiders, what one culture may value another may not and what opinion another holds, one may not. There will be historical and traditional reasons to why these values and opinions are held. Cultures usually have a paragon to which they hold their members to, a list of characteristics that they expect one to if not adhere to then aspire to. The Yoruba people value honesty, hard work, courage and integrity. Here are some questions to consider?
How important are these ethics and core values? Could somebody be ostracised for not living up to them?
What are some morals that clash with other cultures?
What does your culture precieved to be right? Or wrong?
What are some opinions that are considered to be taboo in your culture? Why?
Dress Code
Tumblr media
For many cultures, the way somebody dresses can be important. History and ethics can effect how one is meant to be dressed such as an expectation of chastity, can impose strict modesty. While other cultures, put more importance on details, the different sorts of clothes worn and when or what colour one might wear. The Palestinian people (من النهر إلى البحر ، قد يكونون أحرارا) denoted different family ties, marriage status and wealth by the embroidery and detailing on their thoub.
Are there traditional clothes for your world? Are they something somebody wears on a daily basis or just on occasion?
Are there any rules around what people can wear?
What would be considered formal dress? Casual dress?
What would happen if somebody wore the wrong clothes to an event?
Language
Tumblr media
Language can also be ingrained as part of a Culture. It can be a specific way one speaks or a an entirely different language. For example, in the Southern States of America, one can engage in a sort of double talk, saying something that sounds sweet whilst delivering something pointed. Bless their heart. I have a post on creating your own language here.
Arts, Music and Craft
Tumblr media
Many cultures are known for different styles of dance, their artwork and crafts. Art is a great part of culture, a way for people to express themselves and their culture in art form. Dance can be an integral part of culture, such as céilí dance in Ireland or the Polka in the Czech Republic. Handicrafts could also be important in culture, such as knitting in Scottish culture and Hebron glass in Palestine. Music is also close to culture, from traditional kinds of singing such as the White Voice in Ukraine and the playing of certain instruments such as the mvet.
Food and Diet
Tumblr media
The way a culture prepares or intakes or treats certain foods are important to a culture. In some cultures, there is a diet yo adhere to, certain foods are completely banned. With Jewish culture, pork is prohibited along with fish such as sturgeon, along with shellfish and certain fowl. Meat must also be prepared in a certain way and animal byproducts such as dairy, must never be created or even eaten around this meat. This is known as kosher. The way one consumes food is also important to culture. In some cultures, only certain people may eat together. Some cultures place important on how food is eaten. In Nigerian culture, the oldest guests are served first usually the men before the women. In Japanese culture, one must say 'itadakimasu' (I recieve) before eating. Culture may also include fasting, periods of time one doesn't intake food for a specific reason.
What are some traditional dishes in your world?
What would be a basic diet for the common man?
What's considered a delicacy?
Is there a societal difference in diet? What are the factors that effect diet between classes?
Is there any influence from other cuisines? If not, why not? If so, to what extent?
What would a typical breakfast contain?
What meals are served during the day?
What's considered a comfort food or drink?
Are there any restrictions on who can eat what or when?
Are there any banned foods?
What stance does your world take on alcohol? Is it legal? Can anybody consume it?
Are there any dining customs? Are traditions?
Is there a difference in formal meals or casual meals? If so, what's involved?
Are there any gestures or actions unacceptable at the dinner table?
How are guests treated at meals? If they are given deference, how so?

i have questions for a chapter i’m writing; and google is no help, so if anyone can answer them that would be very handy!
cw// horror, gore, cannibalism, blood,
okay so i’m in the middle of writing a scene regarding someone being cannibalised by a group of people, and i think it would really add to the horror element if they were still alive and like somewhat conscious. how, logically, does this work? how long can someone stay conscious whilst losing blood?
subsequently, i assume it matters which areas the people are eating, so which are the best places for the logic of the scene?
also, how would the person be likely to react - like would they just freeze/faint out of shock immediately? would they be wriggling (they would be restrained)?
any research or explanation anyone could give would be super helpful! the scene doesn’t have to be like, insanely realistic, but it needs to not break immersion, but i think my questions are too specific that i’m not sure what to google?

Happy WBW Not-Cheeto!
Are there any cool weapons (magical, sci-fi tech, or stuff that exists in our world but is just very obscure)?
I’m… not sure? I would say I take weapons that have existed in our world and then figure out how to “sci-fi” them (since I mostly write sci-fiction). For instance, I’ll look at a dagger or spear and think “what futuristic properties can I add to that?” Something along those lines; I really hope that answers your question (sorry, my brain is really slow today >~<)

What is one thing that your character dislikes about themselves? ("Nothing" is also a valid answer.)
What does your character see as the greatest injustice?

On a scale from 1-10, how intelligent is your character? (1 being incredibly stupid with almost no knowledge of the world, and 10 literally being Light Yagami. If you don't get it, that's on you lol; but it's basically having over 200 IQ.)
Does your character specialize or have remarkable talent in anything? If so, what is it?
In a group setting, what role would your character have? Leader, co-leader, follower, or outsider?

Happy STS! What does getting started on a long writing session look like for you?
Thanks for the ask, @pandoras-comment-box!
I'm a Drink Gremlin so that's my writing fuel.
Caffeinated chestnut-flavored black tea with cream Or Decaf vanilla latte with a green tea (usually lychee rose flavored) on the side for the caffeine.
If I can swing it, my writing snack is some sort of pastry like coffee cake or walnut povitica. Then I'm good to go.
Pre-covid, my ideal writing setup was a trip to my fave coffee shop and I could really crank out words, but I have chronic autoimmune pulmonary issues and I'm high risk so that's off the table for me.

how do you write a liar?
How to Write Liars Believably
Language
The motive of every goal is the make the lie seem plausible while taking blame off the speaker, so liars will often project what they say to a third party: "Katie said that..."
Referring to third parties as "they" rather than he or she
In the case of a deliberate lie prepped beforehand, there will be an overuse of specific names (rather than pronouns) as the speaker tries to get the details right.
Overuse of non-committal words like "something may have happened"
Masking or obscuring facts like "to the best of my knowledge" and “it is extremely unlikely," etc.
Avoiding answers to specific, pressing questions
Voice
There's isn't a set tone/speed/style of speaking, but your character's speech patten will differ from his normal one.
People tend to speak faster when they're nervous and are not used to lying.
Body Language
Covering their mouth
Constantly touching their nose
fidgeting, squirming or breaking eye contact
turning away, blinking faster, or clutching a comfort object like a cushion as they speak
nostril flaring, rapid shallow breathing or slow deep breaths, lip biting, contracting, sitting on your hands, or drumming your fingers.
Highly-trained liars have mastered the art of compensation by freezing their bodies and looking at you straight in the eye.
Trained liars can also be experts in the art of looking relaxed. They sit back, put their feet up on the table and hands behind their head.
For deliberate lies, the character may even carefully control his body language, as though his is actually putting on a show
The Four Types of Liars
Deceitful: those who lie to others about facts
2. Delusional: those who lie to themselves about facts
3. Duplicitious: those who lie to others about their values
Lying about values can be even more corrosive to relationships than lying about facts.
4. Demoralized: those who lie to themselves about their values
Additional Notes
Genuine smiles or laughs are hard to fake
Exaggerations of words (that would normally not be emphasized) or exaggerated body language
Many savvy detectives ask suspects to tell the story in reverse or non-linear fashion to expose a lie. They often ask unexpected, or seemingly irrelevant questions to throw suspects off track.
