Shake It Off

When Steve stepped out of the bathroom, leaving Nancy to… freshen up, he hadn’t wanted to see Jonathan Byers right after. But nothing ever seemed to go his way after that slimy monster attacked them, did it?

It doesn’t matter. Just shake it off, man.

“Hey, Steve,” Jonathan called to him meekly. “Have you seen Nancy? She invited me, but I haven’t seen her since I got here.”

It’s probably not what you think, Steve. Shake it off.

“She’s in the bathroom by the kitchen. She’s gotten pretty drunk so you should probably drive her home,” Steve replied, deadpan, trying to keep his voice even to avoid making a scene.

Jonathan cocked his head. “You aren’t taking her?”

Trying to think of any other excuse that wasn’t ‘we had a fight and the sight of her right now makes me want to scream,’ Steve replied, “I’ve been drinking too, man. Don’t wanna get a DUI.”

Without another word, they parted ways. As Steve was walking away, he heard Nancy delightedly exclaim, “Jonathan!” His chest clenched, and he attempted to stop the scowl from darkening his face.

Shake. It. Off. Steve!

Although he hadn’t realized he was doing it, Steve made his way to the kitchen to grab another drink. Beer wasn’t really cutting it anymore, but he remembered seeing someone dump vodka into the fruit punch, so he poured himself a hefty cup of the stuff. If he was going to stick around this party, Steve certainly wasn’t going to do it without adding a little artificial fun.

Once he had started feeling the buzz of the alcohol fogging up his brain pleasantly, Steve joined the thrum of people in the living room dancing. The current song was one that Steve couldn’t remember the name of, but he knew that he loved it!

While the kind of dancing everyone else was doing seemed to revolve around nodding their heads, tapping their feet, and just generally trying to look cool, Steve let himself loosen up. It was like he became the center of attention, feeling the music move through him as he matched the beat with his body.

And it was fun! Way more fun than if he decided to go straight home and mope around in his empty house because Nancy didn’t love him.

The thought of Nancy sobered him up a little, though. Now he was at the point where he could hear conversations happening around him.

“I saw Nancy Wheeler leave the party with that loner, Byers. Harrington really can’t make them stay. Imagine losing your girlfriend to the same guy twice.”

“You’d think after dating half of the female student body he’d figure out how to get a girl to like him for more than just a quick fuck.”

Steve tried to lose himself in the music again.

“Harrington really fell off, huh. That weird fucking dance makes him look like a barfing cat.”

“Literally! I can’t believe we all thought he was cool. This is so lame it’s sad.”

For some reason, Steve found himself sinking back into the feeling from before. He was having fun. He was making his own dance up, and it felt great!

Soon, though, the song switched to something with a different beat, and Steve had to find the rhythm again. When he opened his eyes to get a better grip on his bearings though, he was looking directly at Eddie Munson standing in the corner.

He looked unimpressed and generally disinterested, and Steve frowned. It was a really bad look to have someone unhappy at your party. Sure, technically it wasn’t Steve’s party, but as the proclaimed “King of Parties,” he was basically his duty to right this infraction.

Before Steve even realized he was walking, his feet led him straight to Munson, stopping him too close for the average person’s comfort. He started drafting what he was going to say, trying to find the right combination of words that would get Munson to have fun, but instead…

“If you’re here for weed, your Majesty, I’m afraid I’m fresh out of stock for the night,” Munson drawled, watching Steve with guarded eyes.

“What?” Steve blinked once. Then twice. Oh… “Ah, right. Weed.” Ever eloquent, that was where Steve’s mouth decided to shut off.

Munson raised an eyebrow at Steve suspiciously. “If you weren’t looking for weed, why are you standing here?”

“You’re not having fun,” Steve stated. Come on, get to the point, Steve!

Putting on a theatrical face, Munson sing-songed, “What an astute observation, my Lord! Though, I do regret to inform you that this is strictly a business venture. Nobody has fun when they’re conducting business, my Liege.”

All of Munson’s fancy words were kind of fucking up Steve’s ability to get the words he wanted to say out of his brain and into his mouth. “Huh?”

Munson sighed, obviously becoming fed up with Steve's conversation skills. “Did this conversation have a point, or did the braincells I lost while standing here just die for nothing?”

“Come dance with me!” Steve finally suggested.

“I beg your everloving fuck?” Munson answered, his face twisted in several different complicated expressions.

Steve grinned. “You’re not having fun, so come dance with me! I wasn’t having fun a couple minutes ago, and now I feel great!” He paused for a moment and frowned. “Though I guess that could’ve been the vodka…”

Munson pinched the bridge of his nose and grumbled under his breath, seeming just to himself, “Why are you even entertaining this, Eddie? Get a grip!” Then he relaxed his shoulders and looked up, staring at Steve calculatingly as he said, “So let me make sure I got this right. You, Steve Harrington, are inviting me, Eddie Munson, to dance with you in this crowded room full of practically every popular kid in our high school.”

“You know, you have really nice hair,” Steve replied instead. “What conditioner do you use? It looks so soft.”

Squinting at him like he had two heads, Munson finally relented and snarked, “It seems like someone should be chaperoning you right now, so… I guess I can rise to the occasion for once.”

Steve beamed at Eddie and led him deeper into the mass of people so they could be closer to the music. Once he found what he deemed to be the perfect spot, Steve let himself feel the music once again. He wanted to get rid of all that other shit.

The gossipmongers at Hawkins High always start shit at every opportunity. Sometimes the most basic things get circulated through every rumor mill, and Steve had given up trying to plaster on a fake smile and put on a show.

Suddenly, Steve turned to Eddie and said, “Hey, you’re against all that conformist shit, right? Like doing your own thing or something?”

“Yeah, man… I am,” Eddie replied carefully.

Steve smiled, hoping he figured out how to get Eddie to really join him. “That’s what this is. Dancing like an idiot because it’s lame and so fun and I don’t have to worry about anyone else’s… bullshit.”

Eddie hummed, watching Steve appraisingly before his lips quirked up into something a couple of degrees off of affection. “Alright, I think I can get behind that. Wanna pretend like we’re the lead singers of this band performing a sold-out show?”

Brightening considerably, Steve pumped his fist. “Hell yeah!”

Once Steve gave his approval, Eddie whipped out an air guitar and started strumming viciously, his motions not at all synced up to “Girls Just Want to Have Fun.” Steve grinned and picked up his own fake microphone, tilting the stand around like he was Elvis Presley while he headbanged aggressively. Cyndi Lauper was not an artist people would usually headbang to, but it was fun, so Steve was doing it.

Naturally, people started to stand and gawk at their display, but their confused and disgusted looks only seemed to fuel Eddie’s energy. Hey, that’s what Steve had been trying to do! Getting Eddie to join him was definitely the right choice.

Matching Eddie’s enthusiasm, Steve leaned in closer to him to share the microphone as if they were singing a duet. Eddie snorted out a surprised laugh at Steve’s antics, but he still joined in with the charade.

Even when people started whispering around them, Steve didn’t care anymore. Their words slid off of him like water off his back. Plus, Eddie looked like he was having fun too.

Steve was starting to forget why he had been so upset before… Eh, it was probably just some stupid bullshit anyway.

first of all, imagine not growing a set of tits and sending anon hate. if you're so proud of being a billy apologist, why don't you face me like a non-bigoted perso-....oh wait, you can't, because you stan a literal abusive, racist shithead.

second of all, just because he's fictional doesn't mean he doesn't have an affect on real life things. fiction is fake, obviously, but it still influences on every-day life. just look at the harassment caleb has faced over the years! lucas is a fleshed-out character and ALL billy was ever meant to be is a minor antagonist turned catalyst and plot device in s3. he was a obstacle in both max and lucas' stories - to show the racism and bigotry lucas faced as a black kid in the 80s in smalltown america, and the abuse, survivor's guilt and trauma max faced and her response to that, which furthered into her becoming a victim for vecna. you could argue that sure, he has a background (being abused by his father) but thats just his motive for racism and his abuse of max. billy was really nothing but a plot device and yet caleb/lucas is still overshadowed and harassed on the daily, purely for being black and speaking out about billy's racism.

because billy is literally such an empty character with like...NO personality except for being a straight white cis male, the fact that he gets SO much attention and people justifying his actions and hating on caleb/lucas just goes to show how awful this fandom can be. it's clear that apologists only like him because they can twist this conventionally attractive white male into this "oh oh oh protect him 🥺🥺🥺yea he's a racist and assaulted and almost hate-crimed a young child and abused his younger sister but he's so sexy and queercoded and damaged and we can fix him!!"

how about we look at a character who's ACTUALLY queer and was abused? will byers. and you don't see him attacking every bipoc within a five mile radius. will was abused and came out of it still a kind and compassionate person, so if you want a gay abuse survivor character to stan, he's right there. or, if you want someone older who's ALSO slightly queercoded and an abuse survivor, you have jonathan byers.

but i get it. you don't like those two options because they're either too young to fetishize or not conventionally attractive.

"learn to enjoy life a little more" but how? how can i enjoy life when people are seriously out there defending a character who genuinely made ME, a WATCHER, feel perturbed and unsafe? how am i meant to enjoy life when people are justifying an abusive racist's actions? how do i know they won't defend a real-life abusive racist's actions? i mean, what's stopping them? the fact that billy's fictional despite being a VERY realistic portrayal of a straight white cis male, even now in 2022?

I just saw a post about how Will should come out to Steve so that Will can know that he's not alone and so that he can have support from someone who is an ally...as if Jonathan isn't right there and as if Jonathan hasn't been there for Will's whole life. As if Jonathan didn't give Will a whole-ass speech about how he's always there for Will and loves him no matter what.

Steve stans have always been so fucking frustrating but acting like Will is alone and doesn't already have a brother who loves him unconditionally is a new level.

a hard agree anon! don’t get me wrong, i like steve a lot, but i’m so tireeeeed for his fans basically erasing jonathan’s character, praising steve for being the “mom” friend when HELLO? jonathan who’s been playing will’s dad figure since season one is right there and doesn’t even get half the recognition! and yes, okaaaaay steve IS an ally and i love how he reacted with robin. but why on earth would will choose to come out to steve? the reason why steve and robin’s scene was so good is bc they had a bond already. will and steve have barely interacted throughout four seasons?

makes NO SENSE!!

i’ve seen a few posts with the same message and i am: tired. will doesn’t need steve as an ally because he is not all alone. he has people who care about him and amongst them is jonathan!! not that i would be against any interactions between will and steve, but not basically rewriting the interactions we already have between the two brothers? no hate to steve but jonathan is carrying a lot of the show’s weight and not many are making an effort to notice it *tired noises*

anyhow jonathan byers is amazing incredible wonderful and will feels so safe around him and i love them both for that

i don’t think people take me seriously when i say that ALL of my comfort characters and kins are neurodivergent, mentally ill + everything being a trauma response and queer.

steve harrington? autistic, adhd, ocd, gender-fluid she/he bisexual and issues talking about his feelings because nobody ever asks him about them so she never knows how to describe the feeling.

will byers? autistic, ocd, obviously gay, sensory issues, non-binary he/they and we already know where the mental illness comes to play.

mike wheeler? autistic, adhd, gay, gender-fluid she/he/they with mostly feminine days now that she’s figured out why she feels like a girl sometimes, can only ever talk about his feelings with will, lucas or hopper

richie tozier? autistic, adhd, gay, he/it, light and sound sensitivity issues, goes nonverbal sometimes, and still has a hard time making jokes about being gay because of how he grew up.

eddie kaspbrak? autistic, adhd, he/they, always has sunglasses and earmuffs for richie, also a notepad if richie goes nonverbal, he’s also learned sign language.

stanley uris? autistic, ocd, adhd, he/him/they, always has frequent nightmares, loves having his hair played with because it brings him comfort

bill denbrough? autistic, adhd, shares pronouns with stan, always sleeps in the same bed as stan in case he ever has any nightmares to calm him down, the type to linger after a hug because he’s scared to let go

benny weir? autistic!!! noise sensory issues, adhd, trans, gay + polyamorous and dating ethan and rory ( who are also autistic ), he/she/they who, even though he seems over confident, has a hard time accepting that her bfs actually love him and aren’t just with them because they feel bad or if he accidentally put a spell on them.

rory keaner? AUTISTIC!! light sensory issues, adhd, raging bisexual + polyamorous and obv dating benny and ethan, she/he who suffers from gifted kid burnout syndrome, has a hard time telling tone and he also really likes cartoons.

(1) i love a fellow joyce byers stan high five ✋

(2) oh god i have so many hcs for this… some of them i’m saving for a fic i’m writing but i’ll share some others here:

PTSD makes it difficult to stay present, and everyone learns how to get grounded differently. i like to think melissa grounds herself through physical touch — whether reaching out and touching other people, or fidgeting with objects. she often takes a tight arms-crossed stance, which can be a subconscious self-soothing posture that imitates a hug. we see it as a defensive stance, but it actually offers very little for self-defense — it’s a flight posture, not a fight posture.

melissa’s got mommy issues and this is part of why she never had kids. not because she wouldn’t be a good mother, but because the whole concept is triggering for her. the idea of disciplining a child or having screaming matches with a teenager is just too impossible for her. if a kid yells at her at school (or worse, a parent) she can keep herself calm in the moment, but she’ll be dealing with it emotionally in the evening. she has to be able to walk away at the end of the day, which you can’t do with your own kids.

melissa‘s usually wiped out by work and doesn’t struggle to fall asleep, but she regularly experiences stress dreams or nightmares. idk why i hc this, but i feel like at times of high stress, she sleepwalks, or kicks, or experiences some other kind of disturbance. the issues she doesn’t vocalize during the day do come out at night.

so there are 4 types of responses to threats — fight, flight, freeze, and fawn. melissa’s reflex is actually not fight in most situations, especially with loved ones. when a someone hurts her, she takes it quietly, shrinks into herself a bit. this is more like freeze behavior, especially since she often doesn’t talk about it until after she’s processed and no longer triggered. with strangers, she’s quicker to fight — physically or verbally — but with those closest to her, she behaves very differently.

some of melissa’s triggers, in my headcanon, include: police/ambulance sirens, sudden yelling, someone grabbing/touching her from behind her back, rooms/doors without windows, falling asleep or waking up somewhere other than her bed, doors that get stuck (especially bathroom doors), people muttering out of earshot, any sign of harm/mistreatment in her students or their mothers, small kids in public without their parents, personal questions, cars that look like joe’s… etc.

finished binging the s4 pt.1 of stranger things. spoiler-heavy thoughts under the cut:

summed up:

we miss the byers - as family and as individual characters. where did they go. why have they disappeared from relevancy to the plot.

we hate forced stancy. this season and all the steve-obsessive fans are going to make a steve anti out of me.

lumax is the correct ship of the season.

as a jonathan and byers family stan, what a trash season. even tho joyce has a subplot with murray and hopper and jonathan/will have their cali plot going, at the end of the day? absolutely no content. almost no emotional depth. the plots and development have been given to el and hopper in these sequences, joyce moves to further the plot while will is floudnering to be given sexuality plot and jonathan is there for background space. horrific. we have come so far from s1.

on the romance spectrum, as a stoncy/jancy/stonathan shipper, also a garbage season. why have they decided that stancy should be a thing again? and why did they decide to do this with ZERO developmenet? like, steve having a thing for nancy still? cool, canon, acceptable given how they ended. on the other hand, NANCY having a thing for STEVE? wild. why?? no development given. last we saw them, she was incredibly unstatisfied with steve, incompatitable. she found solace and friendship and kinship with jonathan and was happy - last we left them in s3 jancy were in love and steve???? fully prepared to move on with robin before she came out to him. both of them had moved on (which makes the steve still being hung up on her less plaussible but fine, let’s consider that now that robin’s out he’s back to hung up on nancy okay fine.)

BUT NOW??? NOW it makes sense that suddenly, jonathan is across the country so now nancy’s catching feels for steve again? even though NOTHING HAS HAPPENED BETWEEN THEM that makes this make sense??? like, literally nothing. they’ve had ZERO solo interactions of merit, no real conversations outside of things related to the plot, but okay, totally makes sense for nancy to stare and for random 3rd person parties to interject into their lives. which is another complaint - why are randos commenting on stancy??? why are they wanting them to get back together??? because (again) no legit interaction has occurred between these two all season - they’ve had NO real interaction since...s2? everything else has been plot or pining from afar by steve. like, omg eddie’s whole speech about true love because nancy jumped in after him??? uncalled for. she truly would have done the same for any of the party i believe bc she’s a gryffindor at heart. but it was giving v much that random lady in s1 who told nancy that love is what made jonathan beat up steve, implying it was love for nancy that made him do it. however, even as a jancy shipper i recognize that no, it was love for his family that made him beat the shit out of steve. same vibes. random third person who knows NOTHING (literally nothing) about the situation butting in with their own opinion on a single event and dubbing it the cause of romantic love even tho the actual circumastances are not that at all.

so i’m dumfounded by the sudden stancy shoving. truly, it’s like the writers expect us to root for it because the audience loves steve and is supposed to want steve to be happy. what makes him happy? nancy, so give him nancy on a silver platter bc even tho it makes no sense for her canon development thus far, we want steve to be happy so who tf cares.

which also, speaking on this situation of steve - this season felt like it catered to him in a way. like he’s been pining after nancy so we’ll have him DO NOTHING and have the girl give him a second glance out of nowehere to make him happy. he’s jealous of his friends new friend? guess what, that new friend is actually jealous of HIM and thinks HE’S the cool one here. he contributes virtually nothing to move the plot forward? still given as much screen time as they can justify because the fans love him. like, lieterally - think about it. he served no purpose to the plot. robin and nancy led the creele lead while eddie, dustin/max/lucas have been leading the upside down lead. steve is v much like jonathan in the respective group where they are both adding to the plot in no real way (steve was dragged to the upside down but that could have just as easily have been one of the others and had no real connection to the character of steve) - but the difference is the writers don’t give two shits about jonathan, but they like steve so they’re gonna give him stupid dumb lines to feed into the himbo vibes given to him by the fans and have him take his shirt off and have the girl he wants have lingering moments with him too and try to do SOMETHING with a character they originally planned to kill of in s1. he’s a pointless character with lots of screentime and it blows.

anyways, i never liked stancy but I tolerated it and shipped it in certain circumstances prior (see: stoncy - we love a monster hunting trio). this season just made me hate them. on the other hand, didn’t think i’d come into this season shipping ronance, and on some level i still don’t, but i would 1000000000% take nancy breaking up with jonathan for robin over returning to steve. new teen ship ranking: jancy, stoncy, stonathan, ronance - then stancy only when its a pre-stoncy situation.

the season has also made a True lumax shipper out of me. i preferred them to the other alternative in their triangle of dustin/max, and i thought they were cute in s2 but lost them in s3 with the other drama bc they were very much sidelined to support mileven in s3, but s4??? s4 reignited my love for that dyanmic as well as my love for lucas and max as characters (i liked them prior but now i stan). how anyone can leave this season not loving lumax and lucas and max as ships and individual characters is beyond me. im flabbergasted at how byler and steve have taken over the tag when lumax were the true highlights.

i also stan how songs are used in this show. i feel like that was missing in s3 after we had 2 seasons of should i stay or should i go used iconically. i am so happy to see songs return as a focal point with running up that hill. dear billy’s ending secene?? immaculate.

i think they have good set up of byler with will coming out, but im still on the fence about reciprocated byler. will def has a crush on mike. i think mike also knows this?? like he lowkey Knows the same way he lowkey Knew will was gay in s3, he just hasn’t actually faced it, and I feel like it can go either way with him.

i think my ideal kid ships are lumax and byler, but i also wouldn’t be oppossed to a trio with lucas/max/eleven?? where lucas and eleven are max’s bf and gf. idk that montage at the end of dear billy was v much lucas and eleven heavy and i was feeling it for max liking them both.

in regards to the seperate plots, i liked the plots this season. i was not vibing with the hopper plot initially, like hopper/joyce/murray sequences were times when I felt I could take my eyes off the screen and listen while doing smth else initially. that changed as the demogorgon bit rolled in. by the end i was vibing with this plot.eleven’s plot had me invested because i was so curious as to what happened at the end in her memory. i was satisfied by what happened. the cali plot had no plot, but I will take my byers scraps where I can. meanwhile, the creel story was the most interesting. i was most intrigued by max’s trauma and experiences with henry (dear billy is my fave epiosde of this lot I think) and nancy and robin finding out about it was cool. i like theintersection between it and eleven’s plot. i think the hawkins crew had the most intriguing bits of that plot in the first four episodes, and then el had the most intriguing bit of that plot in the last few episodes.

okay last post for now but want to know what would have been truly beautiful?

if we got good, if not great, queer rep between 2 main characters in a mainstream show whose primary audience wasn’t solely queer people.

and we were SO CLOSE

but instead of breaking the norms of typical tv shows, instead of following a plot line that made sense with how you’ve written your own characters, the writers did the predictable and it make no sense.

they turned one of their main characters into a toxic asshole, who instead could’ve been struggling with internalized homophobia and repressed feelings for his best friend, and the other into a plot device to further the straight couple.

and not to mention that they queerbaited us throughout the entirety of pride month.

i really do believe that their may have been some sort of version of a byler storyline written for this season, but was mostly scrapped for reasons idk. why else would there be all the longing looks? the triple take mike did!!! the airport scene?? i feel like they kept parts of it to throw around the idea, but knew they weren’t going to stick with it. i want to say there’s a possibility for something to happen in season 5, but there really isn’t. the toxic straight couple will stay together and keep making each other into worse versions of themselves.

im not entirely sure why the duffers decided to go the route they did, especially because they always describe m*ke and El’s relationship as “puppy love” or that of a “first crush”. not a long lasting love story. but whatever! queer people never get anything and yet it still sucks to have that be the case each time

no but like. we always made so many “one of us” jokes seeing how noah defended and loved will so much but knowing what we know now… he really is. he GETS it and that’s just.. so insanely comforting. a lot of will byers stans/defenders are just queer ppl who see ourselves in him and want him to have nothing but happiness because we know his pain and stress and self loathing all too well, which writers usually don’t. that’s why we get so frustrated with how his character is written, because we want OUR stories done right and are tired of how queer characters are constantly treated. all that said, knowing the actor who plays the character himself knows firsthand what we’re feeling and why, how he sees his character as his own baby and just wants the best for him specifically as a gay man himself, idk it’s just… so validating after seeing his character misinterpreted and misused so much. it just makes me really happy man

I'm really not trying to start a ship war or discourse (and this isn't directed at you at all!) so don't answer this if you don't want to create waves but am I the only one that feels like most Willels are Will stans first and only use Willel (and by extension El) to fulfill an agenda whether that be a Will arc or even Byler?

I was just going though the Willel tag on here and a lot of it is just Bylers pulling El into situations to make them potentially being canon less messy and almost not caring about her feelings at all? For example: the idea of Will ending up alone and having to watch the boy he's in love with date his sister after everything he's been though is terrible writing and isn't fair but El breaking up with her first love (someone who, we are under the impression, she still loves) and then having to watch him go on to date her brother after everything she's been through is okay? It just seems odd? and it gets passed off like it's no big deal because "Willel are twins! and they love each other! and just want each other happy!" and yes!!! that's true but it feels like sometimes that's only used as an excuse and if El doesn't fulfill that, she'll be looked at as selfish and a bad sister (and the writing will be terrible) because they don't truly actually care about what she wants or gets, as long as Will is getting what he wants over her.

This isn't me saying you can't be a Willel and ship Byler or Mileven or even have a favorite of the two btw! I love Will but it's just an observation of mine. I kinda just wish this love triangle thing never happened.

Well, firstly, I think you should readjust your perspective. I don't ship Byler (or mileven). All my pals who I speak to in private don't really care about either ship either but we LOVE willel, the byers, El, Will, Jonathan, Joyce (and Hopper sometimes).

I know it's SO hard to wipe away bias or see through the fog, but I implore everyone to TRY. Try not to judge, allow yourself to understand the perspective of the other side even if you don't agree or genuinely do not care (like me with ST shipping). If you find yourself judging too much, take a step back and reevaluate.

I'm not just saying that to say it either, I have to tell myself this every day so that I don't gain a massive hate boner towards all the shippers when it's only a minority of shippers who are the problem people in this fandom. It's... VERY hard. But it's an effort I willingly make else I would've left a long time ago.

Refocusing on the subject matter at hand, yes, I am aware there are some shippers (bylers in this case) that lean in a little too much on El being the catalyst to make their ship happen, hence they may support willel by proxy and only pay attention to willel in service of their ship. They do exist.

But those kinds of people are a minority. I just left the twitter fandom, but you know what I saw a lot of?

I saw one group of fans insisting that El would crush Will under the soles of her boots for even DARING to look at HER man. How she would rip him to shreds, push him off a building, or break Will's neck for so much as looking in Mike's direction. How dare he have feelings for his bff who he's known for years. Will is a bad brother for flirting with his sister's boyfriend (which he didn't do) and trying to make a move while she was gone (again, he didn't do that). You don't like El if you don't ship mileven. You don't like El if you have willel in your name. You don't like El if you ship her brother with her boyfriend. You don't like El if you like Will. El and Mike should call Will slurs. Will is yucky because -insert slur-. Mike would never like a -slur-. Yada yada. (yes, these are things I have seen. these are reasons I block people. for my own sanity.)

When there was backlash against those kinds of people, you'd assume maybe there'd be a wave of hatred against El. Like in return, people could claim Will would break El's neck. He'd push her off a building. She's a bad sister for taking the guy he's had a crush on since he was a kid. Mike should dumb her. El should get her heart broken. Blah blah blah. (on the rare occasion I have seen these, which I can count on two hands, they get blocked too)

That's not what I saw as an unwillingly witness to the fandom ship wars.

The sentiment I saw most was, "You're really pitting Will and El against each other for Mike Wheeler?"

Mike slander, yeah, but THAT was the sentiment I saw amongst byler shippers and people who don't ship either pairing.

Yeah, I side eye the handful of shippers who might be using willel to support their ship, but I am MUCH more bothered and upset by the other side who decide to tear Will and El apart instead. If I were a mileven and actually cared about Will and El as siblings and individual characters, I wouldn't be ripping on them like I see WAY too often.

I would throw my own hat in the ring and start saying they they support MY ship. Will spent the entirety of season 4 trying to keep those two honest with each other and keep their relationship intact even though he was being third wheeled into oblivion. That's how much he cares about those two despite his own feelings. Why AREN'T mileven fans gushing over all that? A character that believes in that ship so much that he's pushing himself aside for them like? Well obviously, it's because the ship war has gotten to their heads and they can't see anything beyond it and only see Will as an obstacle. But anyway.

NOT SAYING I WANT THAT BTW. I would love it if both sides just... let Will and El be. Their individual characters do not revolve around Mike. The bond they have with each other has NOTHING to do with Mike either. In fact, I was really bothered that Mike had anything to say about how Will and El were interacting with each other. Imagine if Will criticized Mike for crapping on his own sister every other episode? He wouldn't, cause that's none of Will's business.

BUT ANYWAY

I am an "El discovers the lie about the painting" truther through and through. Not because I think El will break up with Mike and push Will and Mike together. I honestly have no idea wtf the writers are doing with that plot line and I don't care. I want El to figure out her dear brother is gay, she's the only Hopper-Byers left that doesn't know that yet.

I am a "El would never hurt her brother" truther. Like I said, don't know wtf is happening with the life triangle and I don't care. But I know for a fact El would not break Will's neck, push him off a cliff, or hurt him at all if she learned about his feelings. I think it'd be complicated for sure but El is not violent. She hurts the people who bring harm to her and her friends/family. I HATE when people depict her as a violently jealous girl. It's gross.

Do I think some shippers are placing too much responsibility on El to make byler work? Yes sometimes. In my opinion, El should have absolutely nothing to do with that ship. Not saying she'd hate it, but I think it's too much to have her bring them together. She is still just a teenage girl. It's unfortunate that the writing made Will spent so much time involved with mileven, but at the same time, that is within his character to do such a thing and it was sorta important to his own personal growth.

If you've been following my blog for a long time, you'd know I was someone hoping and praying this love triangle wouldn't happen. I was hoping in season 3 and season 4 they would introduce a new love interest for Will just like they have for every other character. All to prevent the fandom becoming like this and that I knew this road could lead to either Will or El ending up unhappy. The worst possible outcome has come.

But what's done is done.

To summarize, yes, there are some bylers who support willel because in turn, they believe El is a catalyst to their ship. But you'll find MOST Bylers don't believe that at all and that they love Willel entirely separately from their ship. There are Byler shippers that place Willel above their ship or have even dropped their ship in favor of Willel (because in their opinion, Mike makes things complicated/hurts them both. That's up to personal preference and their interpretation)

In turn, I think some mileven fans would benefit from the willel hype by not pushing forward this idea that "Will is stealing El's man" and other ridiculous things. Will has probably loved Mike since before any of them knew El existed. But that doesn't even matter. Will is not gonna make a move on Mike, he would never do that to his sister. Why insist that he did? Why insist that he will? He hasn't. He values El's happiness more than his own. Maybe you guys should lean into that more instead of spreading hatred towards Willel and Will. I just don't get it.

As a frustrated willel lover, my greatest desire is for people to... chill out. Don't generalize. Become consumed by the wonder twins vision, and leave your ships behind! (joking. mostly.)

anyways i’m rewatching all the teen & kid scenes in st2, and remembering how i felt when i watched it wayyyyy back when it first came out vs watching it now is WILD

like first of all: they’re all my babies, every single of one of them, i love them all endlessly

secondly, never noticed before how WILD billy was to stalk up to steve at that party no prompting no onscreen reasoning ever given???? one second he’s playing w toilet paper the next he’s fucking naruto running to the hot guy on the other side of the room just to silently glare at him?????? billy r u ok???????

some other things i didn’t notice/remember that feel important now:

- will’s visions are fucking henry creel !!! eyes rolled back in his head and shaking and everything. they really did some cool parallels in s4 to s2 will with vecna’s victims and i’d totally forgot about it by the s4 came around

- always forget that dustin liked max for a second there. poor dustin he can’t catch a break

- erica “just the facts” sinclair look how BABY she is!!!!! she’s so little!!!!!

- billy hargrove wore denim on denim to both his first AND his second day at his new school. legends only

- max: “let’s just try to make the best of a bad situation!” / billy: “what in the goddamn HELL and FUCK did you just say to me?”

- why are there SO many redheads at hawkins high this cannot be a coincidence i’ve never seen so many red headed teenage girls in my LIFE as the minor characters/extras on stranger things. there’s like at LEAST five of them what is UP with that do they have a club???? they have to have a club?????

- billy was there in the bg for that entire fight max and lucas had before she got in the car and he yelled at her to stay away from him which truly is context i 100% never noticed before! like billy didn’t just see her walk away from a random kid looking upset and then yell at her about it, he watched her very obviously fight with and yell at that kid and then walk away w tears in her eyes. doesn’t excuse the very clear implied racism that the duffers just had to shove in there, but it does give a new perspective on that whole car convo

- max is SUCH a bad liar and she and billy both know it and it’s hilarious she makes the EXACT same faces when she’s lying about knowing lucas, seeing him at the arcade, and the “talkative mormons” i love her

- i always forget how billy starts off his scene w neil by speaking loudly and with attitude and i think that’s important!!! it’s something we forget often in fic and fandom depictions of the hargrove family dynamic but like. billy is still able to sass like a teenager and raise his voice sometimes and get defensive without being /immediately/ hurt and tbh i think that makes the whole neil thing almost worse !!! it’s at least different than if we pretend that neil’s the type of abuser who is CONSTANTLY blowing up and making everyone walk on eggshells all day long. it seems like he’s more one of those where he HAS good and fair days and then sometimes he’ll just SNAP and TURN and that’s just its own sort of horrible because like…. it’s the false sense of safety it’s the never knowing when the mood is gonna shift it’s the constant testing for boundaries that are ALWAYS shifting, never consistent, never predictable !!!

- i’ll go to my grave believing that when dart approached dustin in the shed he wasn’t gonna try to hurt him at all. poor dart he was just tryna see his buddy!!!! he loved dustin!!!!!

- max telling lucas that billy used to be okay but now he’s just angry all the time and tearing up talking about it really hit home !!! i’ve had family members who i’ve seen be consumed by anger and just. hoh boy actually i think i need a full separate post to talk about this one because it got to me. that whole convo on the roof of the bus does NOT get enough attention

anyways half of these make me want to write their own post but that’s a dump of most of my big thoughts so far. haven’t rewatched ep 8 yet so ofc will also have feelings to share on that but yea. stranger things 2 what a TIME!!!!!

Okay before I start I'm not a Billy stan, I condemn his actions and I dislike the way he treated Max and Lucas.

That being said I don't think it's fair to compare abuse victims or better play them out against one another. Your points about El, Jonathan and Will are completely valid and correct but still Billy is also a victim of abuse and deserves acknowledgement as such.

Yeah El is constantly mistreated in the lab, to a point where she literally killed people but in her case nobody really bats an eye at this as it is justified by the fandom. Yes she was also strong enough to pull herself out of the abusive situation and found people who are kind to her, her support system. Doesn't change the fact that she also has a lot of pent-up anger in her to a point where she assaulted a girl with a figure skate or straight up murdered people.

Jonathan and Will always had Joyce who is and was a positive influence on those boys, even when their dad was around. Plus the Byers are out of their abusive situation unlike Billy who still had to live with his dad.

Billy also had nobody, his mom left and he was alone with his abuser for some time before the Mayfields came around.

Now we don't know much about their early on dynamic but many pointed out that Neil played Max against Billy, she was obviously the favorite child. That adds to the anger he already possessed and to compare their sibling relationship with the Byers one is again also unfair because the dynamic is completely different, whereas both Will and Jonathan faced their dad's abuse only Billy had to deal with Neils.

What I'm trying to say is people react towards abuse in different ways in order to cope. Some people will behave like Jonathan others like Billy, to play them out against one another is unfair. I'm not an expert on psychology or so but I think how people react has a biological component as well.

I'm also not saying Billy's way of coping is right, obviously it's not and he perpetuated the cycle of abuse because he wasn't able to break it, but that doesn't take away from his own abuse.

I've seen people who identify with Billy in the way he reacted to his abuse, they had the opportunity to change their ways and project that onto Billy. We never know if he could have changed after s3 because he wasn't given a chance but it's not my job to dictate how abuse victims feel about his character. And it's kinda problematic to say only a certain type of reaction to abuse is legitimate and worthy of getting help.

I'm totally with you when people use his abuse as an excuse for his actions, again it is wrong and to truly have him redeemed he would have needed to put a lot of work in changing his ways, it's possible, obviously, or else people wouldn't latch on his character and wanting him to be better.

I was not trying to compare abuse victims. I am not the person to be speaking about it and I acknowledge that. Also billy by their Stans acknowledge that he is an abuse victim and billy antis will also acknowledge that he is. My point with that post was that Billy Stans are often times the ones to compare trauma with the characters.

Now about El. Her situation is very different and her violence does get justified by fans. But people don’t bat an eye at it because of this reason: we understand that she is using violence has self defense. Yeah sure she killed people but that was in self defense cuz they would’ve killed her or dragged her back into a situation where she will be used and abused all over again. She uses violence to save herself and her friends. And that’s why no one bats an eye at it. Because if el doesn’t use violence she will be hurt/killed and her friends will also be in the same predicament. Okay I don’t like the way you talk about El and the roller skate incident. Cuz maybe the fandom doesn’t have a problem with it. But the narrative shows how much El is conflicted about her violence and her being a monster. For 4 seasons El has had an internal problem with her violence and whether that makes her a monster. The roller skate incident also shows us this where El has a realization that this isn’t good. That this violence and her violence isn’t good and that it isn’t healthy. And that she has this conflict. So this show does show this conflict anyway. So El uses this has self defense and that’s why it’s not batting an eye.

Okay I hate the whole talk about Joyce being there for Jonathan and Will. And her being their support system. Cuz that puts all of the responsibility on Joyce. Meanwhile joyce is dealing with her own stuff and is dealing with her own abusive situation. She can’t always be there for Jonathan and Will when she has her own problems to deal with. This also degrades and disregards Jonathan’s experiences of having to grow up and become an adult for Will. Even Joyce remarks in like the first season or second that Jonathan has taken up the role and she sometimes wonders if he’s shouldered too much responsibility at such a young age. Also that line about them being out of their abusive situation is just plain not true and wrong. Because a big part of season 1 is them still being haunted by Lonnie and it is about their abusive situation. Plus the town doesn’t care much for the Byers in the first place and they only respect Lonnie. Even in season 2 I believe it is hinted at the fact that some townspeople call their number just to mess with them. They had a hard time getting out of their abusive situation and they had no one to help them. Instead they were ridiculed and Joyce’s state of mind was talked about very rudely in the town. So they get out of it in like season 2 and other seasons, but that is only cuz Lonnie fucked off to who knows where. Otherwise in season 1 they are very far aware from not being in an abusive situation. Just cuz Lonnie doesn’t live with them in their house: doesn’t mean that the Byers still aren’t dealing with an abusive situation and it doesnt mean that they aren’t living with the after affects of this abusive situation.

I’m sorry but what the fuck do you mean ‘max was the favorite child.’ Just cuz she didn’t get beat up by Neil. There is nothing to suggest that she was the favorite. They just focused more on Neil and Billy’s abusive situation than max and Neil. Which btw Neil’s abuse in season 2 to billy is only showed once. And then it’s shown in season 3 more. they decided to focus on the abuse that max experienced by billy. Also it is never explicitly stated that max doesn’t experience abuse from Neil. She could have but they just never thought it was necessary to the plot cuz they were focusing more on how billy abuses max. Also even if max didn’t get abused by Neil: she still had to live with him and hear him abuse her mom and billy. So that would have been traumatic either way.

I hate the whole ‘we never know if he would’ve changed’ cuz it disregards the fact that in canon billy does not regret his actions. He doesn’t regret going after Lucas and hurting max and hurting Steve. He just doesn’t. And a lot of people miss the point about everything. Cuz is there potential? Sure. But would billy actually do it? No. And that’s seen in canon. That’s seen when he doesn’t care about who he hurts. And next point: I’m not problematic cuz you twisted my words. You put that in my mouth. I never said that shit.
