Part 2 Reading erha 二哈和他的白猫师尊 + learning Chinese

🌿🎍I'm back and excited to continue! 🎍🌿

It's been a while since I was motivated to learn Chinese but in summer I went to Japan. Hold on, there is a connection here I swear. I spent a few months before the trip learning Japanese in hopes of being able to get around more easily, however, the more I studied, the more I realised... This language is harder than Chinese?!? And I really missed knowing the basics of a language (plus re-learning characters I already knew however now had a new meaning and pronunciation was very sad). So I am back and more excited than ever, no matter how difficult this novel is I will take it slowly day by day, and hopefully speed up eventually.

VOCABULARY + grammar:

1. 当然 - of course/certainly - dāng rán

- To say “yes” to somebody’s question. (e.g. dāng rán! 当然! Of course you can!) - As it is supposed to be; sth. is reasonable. - An informal expression for making contrasts; used at the beginning of a sentence. In this situation, “当然” affirms the obvious fact. (e.g. 当然了，人不是... Of course, no one can...)

*In most cases, “当然” and “一定[yí dìng]” both can be used to affirm a situation. However, the two cannot replace each other in a sentence without a change of meaning. 1.5 一定 — yí dìng - Used to promise sb sth. (e.g. 甲：明天来我家吃饭啊？A: Come to my place tomorrow, will you? 乙：一定一定。B: Sure I will) - Strongly hope sth will happen; its negative form indicates sth is a not-so-positive estimation. (e.g. 甲：我儿子明年一定考上大学。 A: My son will be admitted into a university next year for sure. 乙：那可不一定。B: You can’t be so sure.) - To emphasize; must (e.g. 他一定要回去休息。He must go home and get some rest.)

2. 过 - indicates a past action - guò

Used to talk about past experiences or past actions in Chinese grammar. It is placed immediately after the verb to indicate that that verb was done or experienced in the past.

一些 + Noun

4. 与 - with/ and - yǔ

与 + Topic + 相关的 + Noun(formal)

When you need to express one thing in relation to another.

What is the difference between 和, 与, 跟? (when all mean 'and')

和 hé is more general and informal (e.g. big and small: 大和小). 与 yǔ is more formal and used in written chinese (e.g. father and son: 父与子). It is not not normally used in day-to-day speech. 跟 gēn is commonly used with people and carries the meaning of “to follow” or “to go with” (e.g. Bob and mary went: Bob跟Mary去)

4.5 相关 - related to/ correlation - xiāng guān

But I will practice the informal version:

跟 / 和 + Topic + 有关的 + Noun

5. 形容 - to describe(with a rhetoric)/description - xíng róng

e.g. A: "he runs very fast" can use 描述miáo shù(describe literally) this man runs very fast.B: "he runs like a rabbit" can use 形容 (metaphorically) this man runs very fast.

6. 不算+太差 - "not too bad" - bù suàn tài chà

(不算 not considered/ not regarded as + 太差 too bad/ too inferior)

It is often used to describe something that is not excellent but also not terrible, meaning it is relatively acceptable or satisfactory.

7. 露水+情缘 - (dewdrop love)one night stand - lù shuǐ qíng yuán

It captures the idea that much like dewdrops, love vanishes with the rising sun.

8. 带着 - carry + to show/ to display - dài zháo

This means "with" or "carrying". It indicates that someone has a certain emotion or expression while doing something. 露水dew drop + 情缘emotional bond/ fateful connection

9. 几分 - a few + points/ to some extent - jǐ fēn

10. 佯 - to pretend - yáng

11. 怒 - anger/ indignation - nù

着几分佯怒 (zháo jǐ fēn yáng nù) can be roughly translated as "showing a bit of feigned anger" or "pretending to be somewhat angry."

I will not learn the whole phrase, but just know it exists. I only want to learn the individual words to be able to recognise them in text.

There’s a knock on your door, one you instantly recognize as it’s a catchy beat you exclusively share with one person alone: Ayoung. “Mind if I came over?” she asks from the other side of the door. You roll your eyes, chuckling as you walk to your doorway, “I don’t even know why you even bother asking, honestly!”

“Unlawful entry happens when a private person enters the property of another without consent from the owner. The same shall be punished by…”

Ayoung pauses her sentence midway as you open the door. “And does that count when said owner had long given such private person the passcode to her door, Attorney Shin Ayoung?”

It’s Ayoung who fondly rolls her eyes this time. She raises her hands, fingers turning white as she clutches onto two bags full of food. Your face lights up at the sight. Whoever said that the way to a man’s heart was through his stomach was severely mistaken - that, or he or she hadn’t taken a woman’s true source of wellbeing into consideration.

“What’s on our menu today?”

“Oh you know our go-to review food. Seori halmeoni’s jjajjangmyeon house special!” Your mouth falls agape, astounded at how she even managed to get those when halmeoni’s special dish always sold out in the middle of the day.

“Please don’t tell you lined up for hours for these...”

“What if I told you I didn’t have to?” Ayoung winks while she takes her shoes off. You grab the food from her hands and start setting the table. “What do you mean you didn’t have to?” She chuckles at your creased forehead, knowing you’re talking about the minimum one-hour waiting time of halmeoni’s stall - and that’s on off-peak hours.

“I think the landlady might’ve mentioned me moving to a new apartment, so when I was coming home from school today, she called me over to her stall and handed me these care packages.”

“Awh, that’s so sweet of her!” Your chest warms at the thought and the reminder that your lovely neighbor was going to move away. Not to mention Chohee has similar plans too.

Ayoung lets Netflix pick out a random movie, adjusting the lighting of your room enough for you to eat your dinner while watching. “Right, speaking of, won’t the hospitals be sending out acceptances for your post-graduate internship?”

Pushing your laptop to Ayoung’s side of the table, you show her the screen of your mail - the same page you have been refreshing for hours now. “Well, let’s just hope for the best then, shall we?”

Forty-five minutes into Miss Congeniality, a notification from your mail app lights up your phone screen. You see the header display that it’s from Woocheon, and it’s as if your heart drops to the ground, and your fingers are simply glued to the side of your phone, leaving you staring at it until the screen turns black again.

Ayoung notices your silence and pauses the movie. “You okay?” the sweet girl places a comforting hand on your shoulder, shaking you gently to wake you from your trance. Gulping, you look at her expectantly. “It’s an email from Woocheon.” Her eyes widen along with yours. “Well, aren’t you going to open it?”

“What if I didn’t make it?”

“Unnie, you wouldn’t know unless you do.”

With one eye closed, you turn to your laptop and click on the new mail. “Besides, they’d be a fool if they didn't accept the application of the same woman who topped the exam now, wouldn’t they?”

Just then, Chohee’s caller ID lights up your phone.

“_____________!!!!!!!!!” Your best friend’s voice rings in your ears, your barely comprehensible name loud and clear with Chohee’s shrieking.

“I’m already positive you got accepted to Woocheon because I had this gut feeling and you know my gut never lied to me - plus I had it confirmed by a fortune teller…” Chohee starts, then takes a breather, “BUT guess what? I also made it to Daegu Medical Center!! GAH _________ I’m literally crying right now!!”

“I’m so proud of you Chee, I really am,” your voice wavers, and you bite on your lip to keep yourself from pouring out all your feelings. “Don’t go me emotional right now, young woman! I’ve got makeup on, and my parents and I are going out to dinner, and I can’t ruin my cute outfit with tear-stained cheeks now, can I?”

Typical Chohee. You smile. “Of course, Chee. I know. We’re gonna be actual doctors! You go ahead and enjoy your family time. Young-ie has come over with jjajjangmyeon.”

“It’s jjajjang-night and none of you even bothered to send me an invite?! So much for our so-called friendship huh!”

“Well, if you’re willing to drive three hours all the way from Daegu after you have dinner with your parents, you’re free to come. Otherwise, we’ll have to finish halmeoni’s recipe all by ourselves.”

Chohee sighs from the other end of the line, while Ayoung watches your conversation with your best friend with the fondest of smiles. Chohee doesn’t stay long after that, declaring that she has to go. As soon as you put down your phone, Ayoung asks about your best friend, “If you don’t mind me asking, why did she choose Daegu Medical Center? I thought Woocheon was like the most sought after hospital for internships?”

“Actually, DMC is being managed by Woocheon too. If I’m not mistaken, it’s also equally as hard to enter Woocheon. Plus her parents work there too, so DMC was the only hospital for her.” Ayoung nods her head in acknowledgment, then presses a button on the remote to continue the movie when an unknown number sends you a text.

Out of all people, you weren’t expecting Soomin to send you a text. You’d been meaning to hear from her so you excitedly send her a text back.

Just the same as the last time you went here with Chohee, the tiny bell dings when you open the door to the cafe. Soomin instantly hears the sound and waves you over to her table. As you near, she rises from her seat with a big smile on her face.

“________! Long time no see!” she exclaims, extending a hand outward to offer you the seat across hers.

“Soomin! It’s been some time, hasn’t it? Would you believe it’s been months since we were reviewing our notes under strobe lights and loud music? Out of all the places to review though!” you laugh, setting your bag down. While Soomin goes through the menu, you take the opportunity to look for Jimin if he was around so you could introduce them to each other too. After all, there’s no harm casually meeting your workmates before meeting them formally as coworkers right?

“You know, I was really looking forward to this day - especially when you had invited me to this lovely place for brunch…” A smile graces Soomin’s youthful features. “I actually know someone who world here...I’m not exactly sure if he’s working today though…” Once more, you glance over Soomin’s shoulders, hoping you’ll catch a glimpse of Jimin’s golden locks. Ah, yes. Speaking of goldilocks.

“Wow! Just in time.... He’s actually here today! Jimin!” Your calling his name surprises him, immediately causing him to look for the source of the voice. He’s sporting a wide grin when he recognizes you from the counter, until he sees who you’re with then diverts his attention somewhere and walks away quickly.

Absolutely taken aback by his reaction, you sit there for a moment with your mouth agape until Soomin clears her throat discreetly. “Um...o-okaayy, that was awfully strange...I’m sorry - he’s not usually like that.” You discreetly hide the disappointment in your voice, wondering if Jimin just literally pretended to not see you when you had even waved him over.

“Oh really?”

“Yeah...um...I’ll try to approach him later…”

“Perhaps he’s uncomfortable meeting strangers?”

Highly unlikely. Not when Jimin had no problem interacting with the other oath takers that he managed to get the whole group and your families away from the maze they called the convention center. Plus, he’s really good with the customers too who generously fill up the tip box after experiencing Jimin’s exemplary customer service. Jimin’s ability to handle social interactions is out of the question.

“This Jimin guy,” Soomin starts, pointing a thumb towards the till, “how did you get to know him?”

You pause for a moment, recalling your memories. “Honestly, I just realized it now, but I actually met him the same night I met you. He was in the same club we were dragged into, and when you convinced me to approach the cute guy at the bar, he actually saved me from a spiked drink - from the dude I was supposed to hit on. The next time I met Jimin was when Chohee and I went here for brunch too and we saw him working here, so I guess that’s how we all came to be friends…” Jimin’s cold-shoulder just moments ago appears in your thoughts. “....I guess...at least that’s what I thought.”

You figure this apparent ‘friendship’ with Jimin wasn’t exactly as real as you thought it was.

It’s all the more surprising that Soomin seems to be the least interested in your meeting, or, that she already knew who Jimin was. She was simply nodding her head as you talked, occasionally sneaking a few glances at Jimin while he was serving orders to the other customers.

You start patching things up, trying to put two and two together to see if it would all make sense. No way. Could it be? That these two had history?

Just then, Soomin stands to excuse herself and heads over to the toilet. The moment she disappears from your sight, you hastily call Jimin over. “Are you okay? Was there a reason why you couldn’t come over earlier? I wanted to introduce two of my friends to each other, but one doesn’t seem to be so willing....” You cross your arms over your chest, murmuring your hurt feelings loud enough for Jimin to hear.

“I’m sorry, ________. But your ‘friend’....she’s not really just someone uh…”

“Was she your ex-girlfriend then?” Pursing your lips, you egg him to go on with a raise of your eyebrow. Jimin’s eyes widen and he shakes his head back and forth. “No! No...it’s not like that...she’s actually my boss.”

His hesitant explanation doesn’t convince you one bit. Surely, there’s all the more reason for him not to blatantly ignore you when his boss was seated right in front of you the whole time, wasn’t it?

Jimin sighs as he watches your reaction, knowing his clarification didn’t suffice. “Well she isn’t my boss, per se, but she is the daughter of the woman who owns this cafe. Wait, they own the whole building, really.”

Oh.

“And uh…” Jimin gulps. Hard. “....the other day…” He looks around warily. “...I might have spilled coffee all over her dress...which was white…”

Oh.

Shit.

“Why didn’t you just quit? It would have been easier.”

“I couldn’t. Not when Woocheon’s results weren’t out yet. I need my allowances too!”

Just as if on a terrible cue, out of nowhere, Soomin appears beside Jimin. You weren’t about to abort from your original mission though. “Hah! Perfect timing! Um, Soomin, this is Jim…” Before you even finish your sentence, Jimin bows quickly, apologizes, then turns on his heel, declaring that he still had to get back to the kitchen to do stuff.

Soomin remains silent, getting back to her seat quietly. You suddenly feel bad for her, seeing how Jimin makes every attempt to ignore her, and gets away with it every time.

Unfortunately and unlike Chohee, you are unable to get out of an awkward situation in a snap of a finger, so you apologize in Jimin’s stead first. “I’m so sorry, uh, he can be really shy at first…” Hopefully that wasn’t a complete lie?

Much to your surprise, Soomin waves it off with a smile. “It’s no worry, really. He’s probably still bothered with him spilling coffee all over my dress but I assured him a couple of times that it wasn’t that big of a deal. And that I always have extra clothes stashed in my car.”

Soomin shrugs as she takes a sip of her lemonade. “I told Jimin it was nothing afterwards, but he wouldn’t stop apologizing...and now he won’t look at me too.” You’re at a total loss, amazed at how she calmly and easily handled that situation like a true boss.

“Besides, dwelling on such a small thing won’t be worth it. Not when we’ll be spending an entire year together…”

You go over her statement again, partly confused. An entire year together? She meant the internship, probably? And above all that - she knew about Jimin too, even when the boy won’t even let himself get five meters close to Soomin?”

“Ah yes, I’m sure Jimin has told you about Woocheon as well right?”

Well, you were aware of that, but you weren’t so sure about how she knew about yours and Jimin’s applications. “Yeah...um, but….I’m sorry, was there a list online that mentioned all the chosen applicants for the internship program?”

“Oh right - I sort of know some people from Woocheon who have told me about those who got accepted...It still feels like it was just yesterday when I was registering my classes for med school and now we're finally here!”

The two of you toast the future, clinking your glasses of lemonade together. Nothing could get better than having your friends become your workmates too. Surely, it’s a sad fact that Chohee won’t be going to the same hospital as you would, but you’re beyond elated that she got into DMC where she’d always wanted to work at.

At least you’ve got Jimin and Soomin by your side now, and hopefully, new friends you’ll meet along the way.

A while ago I asked about how you would've handled stuff like Aura, Dust, Grimm, the Kingdoms, etc. and you said you were busy watching the video. I was wondering if you could give it a swing now? Not asking for major plot shit, just how you would've built the world.

You’re absolutely right, I totally forgot. My b!

So Aura should’ve been explained in a classroom setting. Even if “Aura” is something that is second nature to kids by the time they reach “high school” level like Beacon, HOW often in high school did we go over shit we learned in middle school?! It wouldn’t be weird for teachers to give a refresher course, especially in a “we’re going to work on strengthening your Aura beyond just forcefields” context. Pyrrha’s explanation was weird and wonky and poorly timed and not even the full story. It was season one so I’m not in any way upset about it, but Glynda Goodwitch- Mistress of Magic, Kicker of Ass- should’ve been the one to explain Aura. The whole story. In a classroom setting. BEFORE the Emerald Forest arc. They literally set these kids to go off in a Grimm infested forest without even knowing if they were aware their most basic tool in combat. That way we could properly understand the stakes! “Are Grimm actually lethal, or are they like angry chihuahuas biting your ankles?” “Can they hurt our MCs, or are they already too powerful for average Grimm?” “What happens if/when your Aura breaks?” “Are you completely invulnerable while you have even 1% Aura, or can someone at 100% still get OHKO’d by a well-timed slingshot to the forehead?” “Can you use your Semblance at 0% Aura?” “How would passive Semblances affect one’s Aura?” All of these questions and more should’ve been answered either BEFORE the first battle arc through exposition, or DURING the first battle arc through application. To this DAY they’re still flip-flopping on certain aspects of Aura because they were never officially discussed in the show (and some aspects that WERE discussed, but that’s another issue about retconning I don’t feel like getting into).

We run into the same issue with Dust. It’s such an important, integral part of the WORLD- not even just combat- that this should’ve been explained already. Even if they wanted to keep its origins a mystery- which is FINE! That specific aspect isn’t necessary to understand!- we STILL should’ve been given a rundown on Dust and it’s applications before the first fight, and Weiss’ little rant was NOT adequate. The same with Aura, we still don’t know a lot about Dust. The WoR said that Dust could literally be absorbed into the body (in a sinister tone which implied it was “bad” or “difficult”) and it’s been 7 seasons and the only application of this we’ve seen was Hazel shoving rocks up his ass. We still don’t know if Dust is a finite resource, exactly how valuable Dust is, and we had to learn from the companion book exactly what kinds of Dust actually exist (yet again, more homework). We don’t know why some people don’t use Dust when it’s such an obvious plus in battle, we don’t know why Weiss is able to use so MUCH Dust even after being cut off from her father’s wealth, we don’t know if Dust RUNS OUT or if once you have a crystal you’re good forever, etc. Personally I would’ve explained this during a trip to some natural Dust formation similar to how the Clone Wars series explained Kyber Crystals during that Youngling episode. Instead of “random forest to get tree sap” during V1, I would’ve made that entire arc a trip to get Dust.

It’s 7 seasons in and so far the MOST we’ve learned about our most basic grunt level bad guys is from a video game that most members of the fndm haven’t even played. Grimm Eclipse was the one piece of the show that actually TRIED to give an in depth explanation into Grimm, how they work, what they do, how they exist, etc, and most of it has been retconned or never even happened as far as RT is concerned. They literally just retconned that “Grimm can sense Aura AS WELL AS emotions” in the most recent book which literally makes Ren’s Semblance as it’s been explained completely fucking USELESS to hide themselves the way they’ve been doing. They built up the Grimm as “generic bad monsters” but even Generator Rex was able to explain how their “generic bad monsters” operate. This show just goes “alright. There’re monsters. You know what to do” which isn’t entirely incorrect but the issue lies that there are so many types of Grimm and they all(?) work for Salem so HOW? Even if Salem was to remain in the shadows up to v3, they still could’ve explained that there were dragons that leaked Grimm juice everywhere before it actually happened.

The Kingdoms should’ve been explained by just basic conversation. Sun’s from Vacuo and moved to Mistral for school. Weiss is from Atlas and moved to Vale. Blake is from Menagerie and traveled for years. Pyrrha’s from Mistral and moved to Vale. Ruby and Yang were born and raised on Patch. Jaune’s sister lives in Argus. Ren was from the outer kingdoms. Nora was orphaned as a little baby. We already had people from ALL OVER by season ONE. We could’ve learned about all these different places through basic interaction with the main cast. Blake could’ve said “wow, it’s way less crowded in your cities” at any point. Weiss could’ve scoffed at the architecture or complained about the heat. Pyrrha or Neptune could’ve talked about how different Vale was from Mistral. Sun could’ve said how stuffy the city felt compared to Vacuo or complained about how chilly it was because he wants to have his titties out. Instead of focusing on meaningful interaction between the main cast to assist in world building, they focus on… Jaune’s one-sides crush. For a season and a half. And I can’t stress enough how well this plot could’ve worked if they’d explored it ANY other way- I’ve said a bunch that Jaune/Weiss could’ve been CUTE if they’d executed this plot differently. “Dumb, loyal boy who just likes a pretty girl and doesn’t even know that the other pretty girl standing in front of him is the girl on the cereal box he used to eat for breakfast every day, let alone realize that the girl he’s flirting with is the SDC HEIRESS” could’ve been A D O R A B L E paired with “tsundere heiress who’s guarded because she’s tired of people using her for her name and status.” Jaune’s stupidness wasn’t the issue. It was how Jaune’s stupidness distracted from the ENTIRETY of the plot and world building that needed to be happening during the early volumes to the point that we’re STILL hopelessly lost OFTEN on key elements of the story that we should’ve known from DAY ONE.

Oh hell yeah I’m so down to talk! I’ll try not to only put SDR2,,,no promises. also in this Izuru and Hajime are separate people and Chiaki is a real person, not an AI created by Chihiro

V1:

• Sayaka gives Leon singing lessons. He’s,,,honestly horrible but he’s trying and that’s what count. On the other hand, they’re also learning instruments together! Sayaka sucks but it’s okay they’ll get better with time.

• Celeste and Byakuya have a weird relationship where they’re civil sometimes but they also not so passive aggressively insult each other. It’s like a silent competition and neither of them are willing to back down.

• Similarly Byakuya and Kyoko don’t hate each other but they make snarky comments to each other constantly. Makoto is constantly caught in the middle of it and he never knows what to do.

• Toko and Hifumi once got into a really heated debate about whether manga counted as literature. Threats were made, hands were very nearly thrown. It was quite a scene and the class lives in fear of something like that happening again.

• Chihiro and Chiaki are good friends! They’ve programmed a game together and vibe together. They don’t always talk when they hang out, sometimes Chihiro programs while Chiaki games but they enjoy each other’s company.

• Mondo, Aoi, Sakura, Akane, and Nekomaru work out together! On a similar line of thinking, Mukuro and Peko train with each other sometimes.

• When Celeste actually laughs, she cackles like a witch. The first time she laughed like that in front of the class, Hiro was horrified, he cowered in the corner and may or may not have cried.

V2:

• Hajime does swimming and basketball! Idk man he gives off swimmer vibes. He’s actually pretty strong but you can’t tell? You can’t see his stomach and his sleeves are just long enough to cover his upper arms.

• This is kinda canon but Nagito’s like. A big book nerd. He goes through thick ass novels with hundreds of pages within a week. Hajime is stupefied.

• Nagito likes to braid Izuru’s hair! Izuru thinks it’s unnecessary but humors him bc it keeps the hair out of his face and Nagito’s actually pretty good at it.

• Chiaki and Nagito are gaming buds. He’s not quite as into games but they like playing Mario Kart and destroying Hajime by teaming up and spamming shells bc he gets really pissy. (“That’s not fucking fair, you can’t gang up on me! Kamukura no don’t join them oh my god you asshole—”)

• Izuru and Hajime aren’t related but they might as well be, they fight over the pettiest things and it’s hysterical.

• “Kamukura I was saving that food for later!“ “You left it out, it was fair game.” “That’s not how that works you dick!”

• Chiaki and Nagito have absolutely eaten popcorn while Izuru and Hajime duked it out in the living room

• Chiaki and Izuru cannot fucking cook to save their lives. They can’t. Nagito can cook like. Instant noodles and stuff? Hajime is the only one with actual cooking skills and I stand by that. He’s the only force in their lives keeping them from starving or eating so much bullshit they die of health complications.

• They do study groups! Hajime is the designated Snack Man and has to force Chiaki to study instead of gaming. Izuru doesn’t really have to but he helps with explaining if Nagito is otherwise occupied.

• Souda mixes several energy drinks together and drinks it if he needs to cram for an exam or gets an idea for a project and wants to work on it over night. One time Hajime drank it bc he was dumb and forgot to study and he almost gave himself a heart attack. Mikan was horrified.

• Hajime, Izuru, Chiaki, Nagito, Souda, Sonia, and Gundham have horror movie nights!! Souda is always paralyzed with fear and Izuru is unphased. Sonia’s always the one most invested, Nagito is constantly five steps ahead of everyone, even the movie. It’s like his secret Ultimate.

• They all cram themselves onto the same couch. Sometimes people sit on the arms of the sofa, sometimes people lay across everyone’s legs, sometimes a couple of them are in someone’s lap. Everyone complains but they don’t bother moving bc it’s just a thing now.

• Listen Souda talks big shit but if you flirt with him, he will not know what to do. He goes completely red and all cognitive function shuts down. He can’t handle it.

Talking about the Bees

Over the years bmblb has given me a mix of emotions that were difficult to explain but I’ve gotten a pretty good handle on them now and I’m kinda just putting them out into the air. Bmblb is a really cute ship; Blake and Yang are aesthetically pleasing together and fans come up with really interesting things for them. Outside of that however, it is a bit of a challenge to enjoy this ship and it comes down two things really.

The first thing is really easy to explain. It suffers from what most ships in shows have where there’s plenty of pairings; it’s gotten so big that it’s constantly louder than most ships. This problem really can’t be fixed all that much unfortunately. For those who don’t get what I’m saying I’ll explain. When I watch RWBY and Blake and Yang do anything together, I instantly know social media is gonna be flooded with it. The fans are all gonna post similar things regarding that clip that everything else about that episode practically gets drowned out. I remember in V5 where countless of people were talking about how Yang was gonna react to Blake in the final episode and not about how she was gonna confront her mother. What makes it seem louder is even during a hiatus there’s no real slow down. Someone can make a post saying “Bees killedAdam” today and it most likely trend higher than an extremely well drawn picture of Oscar. No other ship does this. When major things happen to big ships like White Rose and Renora people eat up for a couple of weeks then move on; they don’t even flood the hashtags really. It’s only Bmblb that has this constant high 24/7 because of the sheer size and energy of the shippers; that’s why it’s super easy to upset the hive; not to mention the Wasps.

The second thing is a bit more controversial but these are my opinions and obviously no one is obligated to agree with me. Bmblb to me does not seemed earned. Like I said, they look cute together but their relationship is really hollow and leaves a lot to be desired in my opinion. It’s like Rooster Teeth made all the plot points but never connected them; some have dashed lines but that’s it. Yang in vol5 was so touchy over the subject of Blake that she lashed out momentarily at Weiss and Ruby. Even after talking about it with Weiss, a lot of pent of emotions were still there and could only be resolved by confronting Blake with them. At the end of the volume I held out hope that her saying they were fine was just because it was the end of the volume. Then we got to V6

It starts of good with their being this awkwardness between them; things aren’t normal yet and that’s good. Next major thing is the barn scene and that’s where the ball drops. Yang getting upset at Blake for her comment about being protected should’ve been the flood gate for a well of deeper problems. Yang should’ve ripped into her about all the pain she’s caused her since V3. Blake didn’t believe Yang during the tournament incident, then she left without a word, now she’s back by coincidence and talking about standing by people when they need help. That aggression she showed Ruby and Weiss should’ve been in full force here while Blake tried defending herself and also getting a angry instead of Yang just leaving; then having her help only Blake a few scenes later. I mean Yang has a golden opportunity to talk about her abandonment issues here.

That argument could’ve caused the both of them to not speak to each other and only be hurt up until the airship mission. Instead of a cute scene of Blake telling Yang how bad stealth she is, replace it with Blake trying to apologize again and clear the air as Yang only listens because as much as she wants to forgive her, she’s genuinely hurt so Blake goes to do her part of the mission without an answer. Then Adam shows up and Yang rushes into action like in the show. Both of them are forced to get their shit together and face the vital reason they are in this emotional situation. The scene plays out as normal about them protecting each other and we have them both break down and crying after they beat him too. They’re both apologizing for everything that’s happened and Yang tells her how much Blake means to her. Now these awkward and cute scenes in V7 feel earned between them and not bait because they have a complete arc.

We know Rooster Teeth can pull this off because they’ve made a complete arc before. Blake met Sun and he started as a stranger she’s into and would help her with or without permission. She likes it until it becomes a problem in V4 where she actively tries shuts him out of her life and is upset that he’s around to the point she hits him. Sun however continues to push the boundaries. This comes to a head where she gets really upset after he could’ve died. Both of them end up having a serious conversation where they air out all of their emotional stress. Then we spend V5 with Blake actively including him and giving him information about her life willing to the point she tells him about Ilia’s past and let’s him know she’s going to meet her.

This payoff keeps happening from that point forward where they have each other’s back and supporting one other until the end of the volume. The two of them confident that they don’t even have to constantly be around each other and that they can handle things separately. Then the arc closes in the beginning of V6. Blake went from hitting Sun and not wanting him around to being sad that he’s leaving her and kisses him on the cheek. Sun isn’t worried about her and trying to stick with her. He knows Blake is where she needs to be and doesn’t pressure her to figure everything out so fast; he respects her boundaries. They had a complete arc.

This is why Bmblb and BlackSun are so aggressive. More fans love Bmblb and they are drowning in evidence that their ship will be canon, BlackSun feels more complete. Their relationship has matured more naturally; the dots connect. There’s just not as many dots at this point. I’m not picking sides or anything because at this point o think Blake should be single and focus on who she is as a person for awhile, which would do Yang’s character some good. Yang has not initiated any meaningful conversation or action with anyone except Blake and her mom. Weiss just happened to be kidnapped by Raven and she also made Yang open up after her lash out. Yang barely talks to Ruby and outside of V1 and their hug in V5 there hasn’t been a real heart to heart with them, but she’s talked with, or about Blake plenty with varying emotions. Jaune is consistent with his feelings. Pyrrha makes him sad and any serious conversation holds a wait of him struggling to press on and slowly getting better because almost everyone has talked to him to help progress his character. Yang is trapped in a bubble talking to Blake and Blake is only allowed to really talk to Weiss if it’s about racism.

I know it’s a bit of tangent but Rooster Teeth is kinda letting this problem bleed over into other characters; especially when it comes to making plot points with no lines. Perfect example we got this volume. Ruby has been in the mindset that she failed to save Penny for like a year and felt crushed about her friends death, yet did not sob uncontrollably learning that her friend was alive. But she cried when she saw her sister, a person she left at home who wasn’t talking to her. If Pyrrha came back you could bet everything that Jaune would be on the floor in tears because it would be weird of he didn’t do that for someone he mourned over. It’s almost like if it’s not shipping related then RT doesn’t care that much but they obviously love Bmblb, yet it’s skeleton of what it should be by now!

That kinda wraps up the basis of my feelings towards the Bees. I really do think this ship is nice but it’s just so lack luster for the amount of people who love it way more than me and for RT to try and sell people on it. I don’t like comparing shows but for anyone who’s heard of The Dragon Prince, season 3 is nine episodes yet the evolution of two characters relationships feels way more natural; also it wasn’t planned from the beginning of the show. If they can do it, Rooster Teeth can too. I say this because I care and want to see the show improve. Like besides Adam, what do Yang and Blake have to talk about? Yang never is in the above faunus oppression. Anytime Blake gets racism thrown her way it’s Weiss that deals with it. Blake and Yang killed the lifeblood their ship was riding on way too long.

Top 5 Things I Liked About RWBY Volume 1

Well, got the Dislikes out of the way. So let's move on to the Likes! While V1 is my least favorite volume, I still adore it. I mean it is the volume that got me and many others into RWBY and without we, well... we obviously wouldn’t have a show. I can forgive many of the issues that I listed, as well as things like limited animation and amateur voice acting since it was V1 when they had a smaller budget and were figuring stuff out. ANd there were still plenty of things to love, especially now.

So let take a trip down memory lane and look back at some of the best parts of the beginning of our journey with RWBY Volume 1~!

#5. The Character Trailers

Okay, this might be cheating since they’re technically not part of the volume. But they were made to lead-up to it like the later trailers were for later volumes and they have story relevance later, so I’m counting it! Plus I want to talk about them somewhere because I freakin’ love these so much~!

These trailers are what got me into RWBY. I remember looking up stuff about the show when I started getting interested in it back in late 2013, and I went to watch them when I found out about them. Making these was a very smart move. They introduce us to our characters early on, gave us a feel of each aspect of the show, and of course created hype to ensure that people tuned in when the actual show started. The Red Trailer shows off the amazing fighting animaiton, White shows off the epic soundtrack, Black introduces plot elements and shows that there will be more than just cool fighting, and Yellow brings 'em all together in one badass package. When I binged through all four of these, I became a fan very quickly. I started the show that night, finished the next afternoon as V1 had practically ended just before I started, and I haven’t looked back ever since. And when parts of them came back into the plot later like the bar that Yang trashed in V2? That made me even happier cause it made them have a point outside of just hype.

The trailers were all fantastic. RT was clearly betting a lot on this show to allow Monty to do these, and the gamble paid off. All four of them have their own unique style and aesthetic and still looks amazing even now. It’s why whenever I see anyone ask where to start with RWBY, I tell them to watch these first. They do a great job of introducing you to this world, and with us going into the seventh volume, their impact is still being felt. I couldn’t not put these on here, but since they aren’t technically part of the volume, I left it at Number 5. But still, these are great and if you skipped them, go and watch them. Now. The list will still be here when you get back.

#4. Fight Animation

...what? Are we surprised that this is on here? Monty’s fight animation is amazing. Even years later, they still hold up. Monty got his start at RTwuth his fight animaiton in RvB, which truly brought that series to the next level. Then he got his won show with even more freedom to go crazy, and boy did he deliver. Sure it didn’t always work well, like when he did it for Penny in the finale and gave away the reveal s a result. But it’ still a badass sequence. All fo the major fights are. The trailer fights, Ruby in Chapter 1, the Nevermore fight in 8, everything else in between and after, it all looked incredible. They were fast, creative, and just so much funt o watch. while I am one fo the people who strongly disagree that the fights went downhill after V3, Monty’s style cannot be duplicated. Nor should it be. We may never have Monty’s fights again, but they will forever live on. That’s honestly for the best.

#3. Weiss Development/Rewatch Value

I was a little harsh on Weiss in the Dislikes post, so let's fix that! I love Weiss. She is my second favorite character and one of the best developed. While I complained about her writing int he finale, outside that? She was good. She was snooty and bitchy, but we saw in Chapter 8 that she is aware of her flaws and did save Ruby as well as give her a pep talk... kinda. But The Badge and the Burden is where she really shines. She’s mad about being led by a childish girl who pretty much got allowed into Beacon, Port gave her a stern but encouraging talking to, and Weiss began to try and improve herself as both a teammate and as a person. It’s simple, but for Volume 1, it was nice and made her likable after how mean she was in the first half of the volume.

Then the rest of the series happened, and Weiss in V1 becomes even better.

It makes Weiss’ attitude make sense. She had to work and fight to earn her way into Beacon. Her father outright forced her to fight a Grimm Knight to earn the right to leave and almost lost an eye due to it. Then she meets this careless girl who rushes into fights, gets in her way, and as far as she knows did nothing to get into Beacon while she had to fight tooth and nail. Then the same girl got to be leader despite generally goofing off and not taking anything seriously, and it makes Weiss being angry 100% understandable. She still acted poorly, hence why Port’s talk was necessary, but it isn’t Weiss just being a stereotypical mean rich girl. She has reasons why she acts the way that she does, and she can recognize those flaws and work to fix it. Even with my complaint about her in the finale she DOES follow it up and improve her attitude towards Blake, Faunus, and her team.

Weiss is a fantastic character. V1 gives you many reasons to dislike her, but over time you grow to love her. This volume was the first step in her breaking out of the toxic and hateful environment and mindset that she was raised in, and she took that step in spades. Rewatching her in this volume makes you appreciate her character so much. Again, her development here is simple, but important and overall solid outside of a few spots. I think that Weiss’ arc has the most rewatch value in this volume, and I appreciate it so much. It is a little spotty though, so I put it at Number 3. But we have another good character arc to talk about, one that I think is underrated to be honest.

#2. Ruby Development

Ruby is my favorite character in the entire series. She was since I started the show, and she still is to this day. Many call her a flat and boring character, and it annoys me. But I do see the complaint that up until recently, she hasn't developed. That she is the exact same as when she started. Ugh... yeah, no. I know that V1 was a while ago and that a lot has happened since then, but she developed greatly in this volume and beyond.

In V1, Ruby is just a girl who dreams of being a Huntress. But it’s kinda like a childish fantasy. One that she’s genuine about, but one that she isn’t truly prepared for. She thinks that all she needs is her badass scythe, and she’ll be fine. She’s reckless, charging into battle to prove that she is capable fo being at Beacon. SHe’s awkward and doesn't want to make friends or teammates. Not because she’s anti-social, but because she’s an awkward girl who is already feeling pressure due to not wanting to be received as special when she got let into Beacon early.

This volume greatly sets Ruby on the right path. Her recklessness gets her into trouble, and she only survives because of characters like Weiss helping. She isn’t able to truly take on Grimm until she starts working as a team with the others, in which she stands up and takes the reigns. She starts channeling her recklessness into crazy plans, like the slingshot, which shows her out-of-the-box thinking that becomes a major asset to her. The Badge and the Burden shows her acting childish, goofing off in class and not paying attention. But we also see that she’s anxious in her new role as leader and if she truly belongs in Beacon or if Ozpin made a mistake in letting her in. But Oz gives her a nice pep talk and we later see that she fell asleep while studying, showing that she is trying to put effort into her studies and into her new position. Encouragement that she later gives Jaune, showing that she took ti to heart.

As with Weiss, it’s simple stuff. But it’s still major progression for Ruby. While her goal of Huntress is still somewhat of s childish fantasy, it’s genuine. She is genuine about wanting to help people and make their lives better just because she wants to. Not out fo any personal goal or thrill, just because she wants to do good. We see that she’s learning as she tarts to put her anxiety aside to work with her teammates, learn to take school seriously, learn to not be so reckless and not be so worried about proving that she can do this, and of course begin to take her first steps in becoming a leader. Steps that will lead to great things for her, especially in V6. I can’t properly gush about Ruby in this post, but I love her growth here so much, and it’s one of the best things in the volume for me.

#1. Players and Pieces

So... you’re probably wondering why this is Number One. Well... it’s because while the trailers got me to watch RWBYm this was the episode that convinced me that it was worth something. I enjoyed Chapters 1-7, but I was kinda waiting for that moment that made me see why it had gotten so popular so quickly. I didn’t watch RWBY when it started I hadn’t even heard of Rooster Teeth at that point. I just saw my friends talking about it, got curious, and started watching it. It was nice... but it didn’t really impress me or get why people were loving this so much. It just felt like a slightly above average web series.

Then I got to Players and Pieces.

This episode wowed me when I watched it. You know how I said that the trailers introduced certain aspects and yellow brought them all together? Well, this chapter did that for something within the show. Awesome fight animaiton? Check. Weiss development? Check. Ruby development? Check. It had good humor. It was paced well. It felt satisfying. And the soundtrack? Holy crap the soundtrack. Yeah, I had to force myself to not put ‘Jeff Williams Music’ on this list because it would be redundant, and putting it on every list would get old. But the moment that Red Like Roses Part II kicked in, everything ramped up. Especially when Ruby slayed the Nevermore. That scene is outright iconic.

This chapter took everything that the first seven was building up to and it delivered an amazing payoff. The characters were great. The animaiton was great. The tone was great. It was funny, heartwarming, and badass in every single way. This was when I realized just how amazing this show was going to be. This is when I decided to hop on board the hype train. This was when I became a real fan, and I am still going even six years later. It’ crazy to me that we’re going into V7, cause whenever I rewatch the moment where Ruby is launched at the nevermore and urns up that cliff, I remember when I first saw the scene. And I still feel the same awe that I felt the first time. When I need to remember why I love this show, I turn to this. It was amazing then, and it’s still amazing now and will always be something that I treasure.

And that’s a wrap! My Top 5 Things for RWBY Volume 1~ It was so much fun to go back through this volume. It’s still a fun ride from beginning to end, and will always have a special place among RWBY fans. shiloh is an extremely shy and soft-spoken individual. they’re fidgety and easy to scare (they sometimes turn into an animal when spooked by someone!). they hide in the their room and are often seen staring off into space, stuck in their daydreams of how to get back to their room so they don’t have to socialize. as seen, they’re extremely anti-social and they don’t open up easily.

when they do open up however, they are the kindest and sweetest person ever. next to mercedes, ofc. they’re unintentionally pretty clingy due to personal phobias + fears, and constantly need reassurance that someone is here with them. they are very protective over their loved ones, as well as affectionate; though, they’re ready to die for one of their loved ones if that means they’ll live.

though, if they’re in love with someone, they tend to push down the feeling in fear of being rejected and abandoned. they’d rather be friends with someone and be secretly in love with them rather than to confess their feelings and be rejected. not only that, but they’re terrified of hurting their friends with their own magic, because they often can’t handle/control it. this is also another reason they stay in their room so much; to practice their magic and to learn how to control it. (their magic tends to be in sync with their emotions)

shiloh in private is loud, boisterous and passionate about their interests. they’re cheerful and optimistic, and will talk so much that they’ll talk your ear off. they’re also an avid animal-lover, and somehow an animal-whisperer.

Biography

shiloh was kidnapped from their blood family at a young age, brought from an entirely different island to the leicester alliance area. they were neglected and abused until they were in their early teens, to which they escaped their kidnapper. their kidnapped attempted to hunt them down and almost caught them, but were killed at the hands of jeralt who brought them in as his own child and gave them the name “shiloh”.

they aspired to be apart of the officer’s academy, but jeralt’s traveling mercenary group held them back. though, once byleth starts teaching at the academy, they are able to attend (finally). they at first don’t trust rhea at all, but learn to as the story progresses.

before shit goes down in the five-year timeskip, though, they are forced to return home to their blood family to take over the kingdom from their dying parents. during that entire period, they learn to rule over their kingdom and become the ruling royalty while their sickly parents step down for their health.

when shiloh learns of byleth’s and rhea’s supposed deaths and the betrayal of edelgard, they pledge their support against the empire [secretly] through letters to claude. they explain that they are unable to leave their own kingdom, as their own kingdom is in a state of unrest + uneasiness and them leaving would only tear their kingdom apart.

once the day of the millennium festival comes, they immediately traveled to the monastery and reunited with their classmates, their [unofficial] boyfriend claude and their sister byleth.

Trivia

their blood family rules over the island of “Ogygia” (oh-g-g-ah).

ogygia is calypsos’ island in greek mythology, known for being supposedly “unfindable”.

they have the same crest as byleth, which is the crest of flames (?).

shiloh’s crest allows their body to handle their extremely powerful magic that they otherwise wouldn’t have been able to handle by themselves.

they’re terrible at handling axes, bows and lances. the only “classic” weapon they can really stand w/o falling over or stabbing someone is a sword

they’ve tried to get training from each of the respective house leaders, but p much fails each time.

their proficiency in magic allows them to change their appearance, though in very small amounts so far. as of now, they’re only able to change their hair/eye color

also with their magic, they can shift into different animals as long as they’ve seen them in real life.

they’ve burnt their hands numerous times from their magic, and often cover it up with bandages in hopes that no one will notice. if anyone asks, they use the excuse that it’s for fist-fighting, which isn’t exactly a lie

they don’t practice the religion of “seiros” and often blatantly avoid the church aspect of their school, despite being at a monastery-esque school.

due to this, they have an extreme disliking for rhea and the knights of seiros, but of course they would never say this out loud.

they’re mysteriously drawn to the sea, though they’re actively terrified of it. they’ve never really known why, though.

it’s revealed later that they were drawn to the sea by a “need” to be with their original family and kingdom.

they also enjoy bird-watching and taking care of wyverns/dragons.

Week 6

Our learning goal for this week is to be able to describe three formats for mental representations and evaluate the evidence for each. To begin, we watched David’s lecture on “Knowledge and its representation.” We learned about the role of knowledge in cognition and how to distinguish three formats for mental representation. In this lecture, we learned about how knowledge causes behavior. People typically use folk psychology (beliefs and desires) to explain behavior. Within cognition and knowledge, behaviors can emerge from beliefs and desires. Then the three formats of representation end up being mental imagery, feature records, and amodal symbols. We also learn that information is what makes a brain knowledgeable. Going back to beliefs, they are the information representation in the brain. Thinking transforms one representation into another while preserving truth. Lastly, desire is the cybernetic feedback loop. We then talk about mental images and how people construct mental images that are topographic.

In Steven Kosslyn’s experiment/study, participants were asked to imagine animals standing next to each other, with one being bigger than the other. The conclusion of this study was that visual imagination produces “little models, which can be manipulated much like actual objects.”

What is representation? Representation is a physical state that stands for an object, event, or concept, and that carries information about it (i.e., has format and content.)

We then learned about Aphantasia and watched a very interesting TED talk on it. Aphantasia is the inability to form mental images of objects that are not present. (To learn more about it, visit the link below)

For assignment three, we went to this website where we used what is called “Cleverbot.” Cleverbot is a chat where you are able to talk with a bot about literally anything. For the assignment, we needed to have a conversation with the bot until it misunderstood us. For me, it took probably 20 minutes until it finally misunderstood something I said. I asked the Cleverbot, “What do you do in the weight room?” and the Cleverbot responded by saying “I do not go to the beach.” The Cleverbot seemed to understand that I was asking a question as it responded in a way that would make sense. The part of the message though that seemed to confuse the Cleverbot was “weight room.” The Cleverbot seems to be limited in its own ability to have an extended goal-directed discussion. It only seemed to understand some common history or experiences that are shared between what us real humans can understand. Computers use the rules of language, and how to properly order them to make sense of our English-speaking language. With that being said, they don’t truly have any understanding of what they are actually saying. We then had to watch a video called “The Chinese Room experiment.” After watching this video, we had to make a reference to it and relate it back to our understanding of the Cleverbot. What I said was that much like in Searle’s Chinese Room Argument, the cleverbot was able to respond to the message he was given in Chinese, but he had no idea what he was writing back to her. I believe that the Cleverbot is just using instructions (like Searle did) in order to respond to what it thinks we are saying on the other end.

The last assignment then was the weekly review sheet, in which we had to Describe the mental imagery, feature records, and amodal symbol format of representation, and list two sources of evidence for it.

Mental Imagery: The Ubiquitous format is usually found in all modalities. It is typically active in the V1 part of the brain when visualizing images. Two sourses of evidence: People that construct mental images, their mental images typically tend to be topographic. Neurons in the visual cortex preserve a map of the world in our memories.

The feature records typically tends to be what we first recognize in a person's face, such as their eyes, nose, lips, etc. It is brought into some form of representation because of the conjunction neurons. It is meaningful to people's experiences because not only is it how we end up telling one another apart but also how we determine people’s emotions.

The amodal symbol: It typically tends to be the abstract format of the representations which also has conjunction neurons, but without the connections. When looking at a fork that is laying over a spoon (crossed like an x), the spoon has a great gap of "missing data", and yet we perceive the spoon as complete and continuous through the occlusion. When you look at a box that is on a table in front of you, you typically only see 2 - 3 sides (depending how it is placed.) I can perceive the rest of the box as well as the exact location and orientation of the hidden surfaces.

VCV Rack nears 1.0, new features, as software modular matures

VCV Rack, the open source platform for software modular, keeps blossoming. If what you were waiting for was more maturity and stability and integration, the current pipeline looks promising. Here’s a breakdown.

Even with other software modulars on the scene, Rack stands out. Its model is unique – build a free, open source platform, and then build the business on adding commercial modules, supporting both the platform maker (VCV) and third parties (the module makers). That has opened up some new possibilities: a mixed module ecosystem of free and paid stuff, support for ports of open source hardware to software (Music Thing Modular, Mutable Instruments), robust Linux support (which other Eurorack-emulation tools currently lack), and a particular community ethos.

Of course, the trade-off with Rack 0.xx is that the software has been fairly experimental. Versions 1.0 and 2.0 are now in the pipeline, though, and they promise a more refined interface, greater performance, a more stable roadmap, and more integration with conventional DAWs.

New for end users

VCV founder and lead developer Andrew Belt has been teasing out what’s coming in 1.0 (and 2.0) online.

Polyphony and polyphonic cables. The big one – you can now use polyphonic modules and even polyphonic patching. Here’s an explanation:

New modules will help you manage this.

Polyphonic MIDI and MPE. Yep, native MPE support. We’ve seen this in some competing platforms, so great to see here.

Multithreading. Rack will now use multiple cores on your CPU more efficiently. There’s also a new DSP framework that adds CPU acceleration (which helps efficiency for polyphony, for example). (See the developer section below.)

Oversampling for better audio quality. Users can set higher settings in the engine to reduce aliasing.

Tooltips and manual value entry. Get more feedback from the UI and precise control. You can also right-click to open other stuff – links to developer’s website, manual (yes!), source code (for those that have it readily available), or factory presets.

Core CV-MIDI. Send virtual CV to outboard gear as MIDI CC, gate, note data. This also integrates with the new polyphonic features. But even better –

Map MIDI directly. The MIDI map module lets you map parameters without having to patch through another module. A lot of software has been pretty literal with the modular metaphor, so this is a welcome change.

And that’s just what’s been announced. 1.0 is imminent, in the coming months, but 2.0 is coming, as well…

Rack 2.0 and VCV for DAWs. After 1.0, 2.0 isn’t far behind. “Shortly after” 2.0 is released, a DAW plug-in will be launched as a paid add-on, with support for “multiple instances, DAW automation with parameter labels, offline rendering, MIDI input, DAW transport, and multi-channel audio.”

These plans aren’t totally set yet, but a price around a hundred bucks and multiple ins and outs are also planned. (Multiple I/O also means some interesting integrations will be possible with Eurorack or other analog systems, for software/hardware hybrids.)

VCV Bridge is already deprecated, and will be removed from Rack 2.0. Bridge was effectively a stopgap for allowing crude audio and MIDI integration with DAWs. The planned plug-in sounds more like what users want.

Rack 2.0 itself will still be free and open source software, under the same license. The good thing about the plug-in is, it’s another way to support VCV’s work and pay the bills for the developer.

New for developers

Rack v1 is under a BSD license – proper free and open source software. There’s even a mission statement that deals with this.

Rack v1 will bring a new, stabilized API – meaning you will need to do some work to port your modules. It’s not a difficult process, though – and I think part of Rack’s appeal is the friendly API and SDK from VCV.

You’ll also be able to take advantage of an SSE wrapper (simd.hpp) to take advantage of accelerated code on desktop CPUs, without hard coding manual calls to hardware that could break your plug-ins in the future. This also theoretically opens up future support for other platforms – like NEON or AVX acceleration. (It does seem like ARM platforms are the future, after all.)

Just ignoring that I've been investedly reading and liking most of ya stuff recently, BUT (idk if you've answered this or not yet I might just be blind) but how do you think V1s and Gabe's first 'non hostile' encounter went? How did v1 go about resisting its programming, and gabe his, so to speak?

aaaa thank you so much ;o; it genuinely makes me so happy to know that ppl read my ridiculously long answers to so many things and all the lore building!! i wish i could pass out pieces of cake to all of you.....

i actually haven't talked about this scenario in particular, but it's really one i enjoy even if it's a small, quieter scene. gabriel at this point needs something like closure, and i think just about all he can get is knowing whether or not the connection and passion he felt with v1 was reciprocated in some capacity. did v1 recognize him? can it feel anything from him? he had never been so personally affected by another, and so he goes against what he is to seek out that answer. to see if v1 is willing to interface with him through communicating rather than attempting to bleed him dry....because he thinks it just might. gabriel knows that v1 has the capacity to be non-hostile, as it has relented at the end of both of their encounters to allow him to speak, meaning its engagement of another actually isn't automatic or forced. that aside, he's also highly aware he instigated both fights - their encounter in gluttony was an obviously hostile display that v1 immediately responded to, while in heresy it....approached him from behind, yet didn't fire until he, again, armed himself against it. he knows he's set a precedent now, with v1 perhaps marking him as belligerent, but he decides to risk approaching it anyway with his swords sheathed to see what might happen.

i think he observes it at a distance for just a bit, seeing what it does when it has nothing around it to fight...and he's left half-surprised. it doesn't immediately take off to the next room in a mindless search for blood, but instead explores its surroundings uninhibited by enemy combatants. it's safe. it roots around curiously, using its guns and fists to break through obstacles and offering soft little chirps at unexpected sights or sounds. it's almost surreal for him, understanding in that moment that they had both only seen one side of the other - v1 is undoubtedly capable of tearing hell apart, yet it clearly has a mind that occupies itself beyond that goal. it has an internal world, and that's all he needed to know. so gabriel silently touches down when he's satisfied, doing his best to gauge just when to approach it so he doesn't catch it too off-guard (he even folds up his wings in an attempt to reduce his bulk)

as expected, v1 is still surprised and immediately wary - he sees its head snap to and its entire body stiffen to its viper-like readiness. a coin held fast, not yet launched into the air. gabriel raises his hands to show their emptiness, telling it in soft but certain terms that he wishes for them to meet in peace. v1 doesn't seem to respond, still standing in rapt attention and ready to strike. so gabriel stops moving forward and considers his options. again risky, but he's a dead man walking anyway. he kneels to the ground, bowing his head and still holding up his hands far from his swords in an effort to fully impress that he means it no harm. not this time. a beat passes between them, gabriel almost surprised by his own sense of calm, until he hears the quick little steps of v1's feet coming to greet him. the coin flicks and he almost winces, but then it flicks again. and again. and he looks up to see v1's face a couple inches from his own. he can hear the little zoom of its optical, see how the rings in its lens dilate and contract as it investigates him up close. he huffs a quiet laugh in response, sending v1 jumping back and flaring out its wings before he apologizes and continues to hold still. it seems to accept this as it moves back in, soon reaching out a hand to touch him and figure out just what he's made of, how he's put together.

gabriel begins to speak as it explores, at first a disjointed stream of consciousness until he can find how to articulate his troubled mind with its dying thoughts. he stays there bowed to it, coming to pour his heart out like a last confession to an entirely silent companion. until he asks if it hears him. if it knows him. if it recognizes anything in him or if he's truly alone in all he's felt, calling out to a partner that can't answer in the same way. and v1 stands there still quiet, still just staring. gabriel tries to immediately fill that silence like he can't bear it, saying that it's truly ok. even if v1 is empty, he thanks it for what it did, thanks it for letting him remember who he was and feel as if he was fully himself one last time. and he's never been just himself for himself, so it gave him something new right at the end of everything and even if all of this just the one-sided, foolish feelings of a dying angel it really is the only thing that can mean anything at all when the world is dying the same way he is - until v1 flicks its coin at his helmet. and it nods. it hears him. for once gabriel is rendered speechless as v1 huddles down next to him. it has time. gabriel struggles with the mortifying, terrifying, incredible, phenomenal thought that the little machine beside him might harbor an ounce of the same feelings he does for it. it's not an automatic love, it's not a complete surrender of what they had been before - v1 still hasn't processed its feelings while a part of gabriel still can't accept that he truly loves v1 (they're decently hot and cold for a minute, having quiet intimate moments that one or the other ruins - intentionally or not - to end in a bloody fight), but this is where it starts. because really, neither of them can come back from knowing that they would choose to spend time with each other without the promise of a fight.

Diễn tả một hành động xảy ra có tính chất tạm thời. ex: Her mother is cooking. Ý nghĩa: Mẹ cô ấy đang nấu ăn.

Diễn tả một hành động lúc nào cũng xảy ra liên tục. Thông thường có thêm usually, always… trong câu ex: He is usually thinking of her. Ý nghĩa: Anh ấy thường nghĩ về cô ấy.

Dùng chỉ một việc đang xảy ra ngay lúc nói chuyện/hiện hành. EX: Her son is playing game now. Ý nghĩa: Bây giờ con trai cô ấy đang chơi điện tử.

Dùng chỉ việc xảy ra trong tương lai khi câu có trạng từ chỉ tương lai. ex: My arm is meeting him at the museum tomorow. Ý nghĩa: Dì của tôi đang gặp ông ấy ở viện bảo tang ngày mai.

For the people of the modern Czech Republic, the Munich agreement of 1938 was a betrayal. “O nás bez nás!” “About us, without us!”

Intent on avoiding war with Nazi Germany, Italy, France and Great Britain had convened in Munich that September, to resolve German claims on western Czechoslovakia. The “Sudetenland”. Representatives of the Czech and Slovak peoples, were not invited.

On September 30, British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain returned to London, declaring “Peace in Our Time”. The piece of paper Chamberlain held in his hand bore the signatures of Adolf Hitler, Benito Mussolini and Édouard Daladier as well as his own, annexing the Sudetenland, to Nazi Germany.

To Winston Churchill, it was an act of appeasement. Feeding the crocodile (Hitler), in hopes that he will eat you last. For much of Great Britain, the sense of relief was palpable.

In the summer of 1938, the horrors of the Great War were a mere twenty years in the past. Hitler had swallowed up Austria, only six months earlier. British authorities divided the home islands into “risk zones”, identified as “Evacuation,” “Neutral,” and “Reception.” In some of the most gut wrenching decisions of the age, these people were planning “Operation Pied Piper”, the evacuation of millions of their own children, in the event of war.

When Nazi Germany invaded Poland the following September, London mayor Herbert Morrison was at 10 Downing Street, meeting with Chamberlain’s aide, Sir Horace Wilson. Morrison believed that the time had come for Operation Pied Piper. A year to the day from the Prime Minister’s “Peace in our Time” declaration, Wilson protested. “But we’re not at war yet, and we wouldn’t want to do anything to upset delicate negotiations, would we?”

Morrison was done with the Prime Minister’s dilatory response to Hitler’s aggression, practically snarling in his thick, East London accent “Look, ’Orace, go in there and tell Neville this from me: If I don’t get the order to evacuate the children from London this morning, I’m going to give it myself – and tell the papers why I’m doing it. ’Ow will ’is nibs like that?”

Thirty minutes later, Morrison had the document. The evacuation, had begun.

Next weekend, Superbowl 52 will be played at U.S. Bank Stadium, in front of a crowd of 66,655.

Forty-five times that number were mobilized in the first four days, primarily children, relocated from cities and towns across Great Britain to the relative safety of the countryside. BBC History reported that, “within a week, a quarter of the population of Britain would have a new address”.

What must that have sounded like?

Zeppelin raids had killed 1,500 civilians in London alone, during the ‘Great War’. Since then, governments had gotten so much better at killing each other’s citizens. As early as 1922, Prime Minister Lord Arthur Balfour had spoken of ‘unremitting bombardment of a kind that no other city has ever had to endure.’ As many as 4,000,000 civilian casualties were predicted, in London alone.

BBC History describes the man in charge of the evacuation, Sir John Anderson, as a “cold, inhuman character with little understanding of the emotional upheaval that might be created by evacuation”.

Children were labeled ‘like luggage’, and sent off with gas masks, toothbrushes and fresh socks & underwear. None of them knew to where, or for how long.

The evacuation of all that humanity ran relatively smoothly, considering. James Roffey, founder of the Evacuees Reunion Association, recalls ‘We marched to Waterloo Station behind our head teacher carrying a banner with our school’s name on it. We all thought it was a holiday, but the only thing we couldn’t work out was why the women and girls were crying.’

Arrivals at the billeting areas, was another matter. Many kids were shipped off to the wrong places, and rations were insufficient. Geoffrey Barfoot, billeting officer in the seaside town of Weston-super-Mare, said ‘The trains were coming in thick and fast. It was soon obvious that we just didn’t have the bed space.’

Kids were lined up against walls and on stages, and potential hosts were invited to “take their pick”.

For many, the terrors and confusion of those first few days grew into love and friendships, that lasted a lifetime. Others entered a hell of physical or sexual abuse, or worse.

For the first time, “city kids” and country folks were finding out how the “other half” lived, with sometimes amusing results. One boy wrinkled his nose on seeing carrots pulled out of muddy fields, saying “Ours come in tins”. Richard Singleton recalled the first time he asked his Welsh ‘foster mother’ for directions to the toilet. “She took me into a shed and pointed to the ground. Surprised, I asked her for some paper to wipe our bums. She walked away and came back with a bunch of leaves.”

John Abbot, evacuated from Bristol, had his rations stolen by his host family. He was horsewhipped for speaking out while they enjoyed his food, and he was given nothing more than mashed potatoes. Terri McNeil was locked in a birdcage and left with a piece of bread and a bowl of water.

In the 2003 BBC Radio documentary “Evacuation: The True Story,” clinical psychologist Steve Davis described the worst cases, as “little more than a pedophile’s charter.”

Eighty years later, the words “I’ll take that one”, are seared into the memories of more than a few.

Hundreds of evacuees were killed because of relocation, while en route or during their stays at “safe havens”. Two boys were killed on a Cornish beach, mined to defend against German amphibious assault. Apparently, no one had thought to put up a sign.

Irene Wells, age 8, was standing in a church doorway, when she was crushed by an army truck. One MP from the house of Commons said “There have been cases of evacuees dying in the evacuation areas. Fancy that type of news coming to the father of children who have been evacuated”.

When German air raids failed to materialize, many parents decided to bring the kids back home. By January 1940, almost half of evacuees had returned.

Authorities produced posters urging parents to leave the kids where they were, and a good thing, too. The Blitz against London itself began on September 7. The city experienced the most devastating attack to-date on December 29, in a blanket fire-bombing that killed almost 3,600 civilians.

Sometimes, refugees from relatively safe locations were shipped into high-risk target areas. Hundreds of refugees from Gibraltar were sent into London, in the early days of the Blitz. None of them could have been happy to leave London Station, to see hundreds of locals pushing past them, hurrying to get out.

This story doesn’t only involve the British home islands, either. American Companies like Hoover and Eastman Kodak took thousands of children in, from employees of British subsidiaries. Thousands of English women and children were evacuated to Australia, following the Japanese attack on Singapore.

By October 1940, the “Battle of Britain” had devolved into a mutually devastating battle of attrition, in which neither side was capable of striking the death blow. Hitler cast his gaze eastward the following June, with a surprise attack on his “ally”, Josef Stalin.

“Operation Steinbock”, the Luftwaffe’s last large-scale strategic bombing campaign of the war against southern England, was carried out three years later. 285 German bombers attacked London on this day in 1944, in what the Brits called the “Baby Blitz”. You’ve got to be some tough cookie, to call 245 bombers a Baby Blitz.

Late in the war, the subsonic “Doodle Bug” or V1 “flying bomb” was replaced by the terrifying supersonic V2. 1,000 or more of these, the world’s first rocket, were unleashed against southern England, primarily London, killing or wounding 115,000. With a terminal velocity of 2,386mph, you never saw or heard this thing coming, until the weapon had done its work.

In the end, many family ‘reunions’ were as emotionally bruising as the original breakup. Years had come and gone and new relationships had formed. The war had turned biological family members, into all but strangers.

Richard Singleton remembers the day his mother came, to take him home to Liverpool. “I had been happily living with ‘Aunty Liz and Uncle Moses’ for four years,” he recalled. “I told Mam that I didn’t want to go home. I was so upset because I was leaving and might never again see aunty and uncle and everything that I loved on the farm.”

Douglas Wood tells a similar story. “During my evacuation I had only seen my mother twice and my father once,” he recalls. “On the day that they visited me together, they had walked past me in the street as they did not recognise me. I no longer had a Birmingham accent and this was the subject of much ridicule. I had lost all affinity with my family so there was no love or affection.”

The Austrian-British psychoanalyst Anna Freud, daughter of Sigmund Freud, commissioned an examination of the psychological effects of the separation. After a 12-month study, she concluded that “separation from their parents is a worse shock for children than a bombing.”
