i love how regis as a side character embodies the theme of choice in the books.

i think cdpr with their many similar vampire characters which talk and blend in amongst humans, cut out a very significant part of regis: he's unique, special even among higher vampires! no other vampires do the sorts of things he does, because they're human things and don't come naturally to vampires:

he just decided to speak and talk, to eat food, to sleep during the night and wake during the day. to learn medicine, run a shop in a port city... he just decided he wanted to... hang out with humans and be a human. not just a chosen identity and self, but later, a chosen family and life and destiny. he chooses to ride with geralt to castle stygga, he chooses to pursue that end. a final end, which no other vampires find. a final end, which is so human of a feat.

he willingly walked away from what so many humans would consider a dream - immortal youth, partying, living without any societal constraints, rules, or morals... regis' backstory highlights all the flaws in youth and immortality - what humans typically consider paradise which no one would ever want to move on from.

and he does so without wanking on about his pain in the past - yes, he explains to us once - there was misery in being an immortally young vampire, but for the rest of the time in the story, he focuses on how good it is to be a middle-aged human! he functions with the rest of the hansa as a group, as a family, and so much of his character is wrapped up in their lives in the present, the point of his character is not the miserable past, but the directed present.

he made a decision to change and decided to be human. this suggests that to be human, to be good, is a choice you make...
