I find it deeply annoying that Darcy gets lumped in with Rochester and/or Heathcliff, but it is also slightly funny because I'm not sure any Austen lead would hold Rochester and Heathcliff in more undiluted contempt than Darcy.

(In fairness to Rochester, I don't like him but he's no Heathcliff either. IMO a lot closer to him than to Darcy, though!)

Coriolanus Snow and Anakin Skywalker are perfect examples of really interesting characters who had every chance to do the right thing but repeatedly chose wrong even though they were surrounded by good people, all because they had one person whispering in their ear and convincing them to be selfish and to hurt people instead. There is no point where they have to do what they do, it’s their choices that make them compelling.

They’re also both incredibly controlling over the women they claim to love but are quick to try and physically harm them when they realise that they’re actually human beings who will not blindly follow them. It’s very clear they were possessive, not actually in love. To sincerely love is to respect someone’s agency and neither of them were capable of that.

Another trait they both share is that, despite being layered and well written but fundamentally flawed characters who turn to evil by their own free will, if you cast an attractive actor to play them, there are always going to be people who blindly ignore the entire plot just to defend them and justify their actions. Being a victim of abuse or oppression does not excuse you from being a perpetrator.

Been thinking about Cheese Melt again. In my head, it's an AU that begins in KS and carries out the rest of the series. Vlad completely retains his personality, the only difference is he's REALLY attached to Danielle and he finds himself in increasingly domestic situations because of that.

His attachment to Danielle isn't necessarily full blown parenthood right away, either. Vlad is a froot loop who convinced himself only a "perfect" clone of Danny would make him happy, but he's also gloriously stupid & lonely and Danielle is incredibly adorable. So he goes through stages of being in complete denial:

Stage 1: Vlad considers this female clone to be completely disposable.

Stage 2: Vlad's new pawn smiled at him once and is now a "remarkably successful prototype" and he decides to keep her around "for a while" as an "experiment."

Stage 3: Time passes and suddenly Vlad is flippantly telling Danny that Danielle is a "valuable asset worth protecting."

Stage 4: "If my baby melts I'm killing myself."

Hickory is my favorite Trolls character, not because of his canon (all he did was flirt with Poppy, have a scene with the Smooth Jazz troll, and then have a liar revealed moment. Every other second he was vibing) but because of the grip he has on fans. I think I've seen about a dozen characters shipped with him, and I can see every single one of them as being canon.

I think those two birds are meant to symbolize both Akemi and Takayoshi. They are both marginalized in some way despite their privilege. Akemi as the daughter of a lord and Takayoshi as the disabled second son of the shogun are both denied agency in their roles despite their privilege. Takayoshi and Akemi both are song birds in a gilded cage. Two pawns to the political and social machinations of their parents. Akemi a victim to her father’s political aspirations and Takayoshi evidently a victim to his mother’s social manipulations.

(Aside: and possibly emotional abuse/neglect, with the way he was forbidden from speaking to women and who knows what actually happened to this first wife. I’m gonna go out on a limb and say that it seems to me like this is all in service of maintaining a “respectable” image of the family, and cannot risk having people know he has a stutter. just spitballing here)

If I were to make a prediction for season 2, or a wish, it’s that I would like to see Akemi and Takayoshi form a genuine bond and alliance as two privileged-yet-marginalized individuals having to navigate a politically fraught and rigidly hierarchical society, and I think there’s at least some textual evidence to support this being a real possibility.

They demonstrate in the show Takayoshi is no fool and that he’s clearly an educated and well-read man. Take how he engages with Akemi’s poetry during sex compared to Taigen as an example. He simply has a disability and is somewhat submissive and subdued (likely due to being shamed or ridiculed for his stutter and getting little to no support as a child). They are capable of being intellectual equals. Any sort of power or control Akemi would gain over Takayoshi is by virtue of the kindness and empathy she is showing him, not because she’s outsmarting him. I believe Takayoshi is willingly surrendering himself to his wife and cognizant of this fact.

I think we may see a dynamic where Akemi will both advocate for her own political ends but also at times advocate for and try to protect her husband where she can where familial and interpersonal relationships are involved. I really really hope their union will be one that grows in political power through the healing power of love, compassion, and solidarity between two marginalized individuals.

They can acknowledge the humanity in each other and see each other as equals in their shared pain and victimization, and find empowerment through each other. If they cannot be their own masters at least they can be each other’s sole masters.

Takayoshi and Akemi may be two songbirds stuck in a gilded cage, stripped of their freedom and humanity. But they at least have each other and together they can harmonize.

s4 was actually so incredible in terms of development. Kitty becoming more self assured and confident. The way julian and alison got on (the guy who lost his daughter and the girl who lost her father) so much better compared to season 1. Robins love of life expanding from curiosity to outright looking over a rat family and redirecting lightning to save mike. thomas is there i suppose. The Captain being more open about his ideas and things he likes, things we never saw in season 1 or 2. Mary’s entire fantastic story that i thoughts about that i simply can’t put into words. Pat having to confront both sides of a loved one passing on, both being the loved one and having to comfort others. Fanny going from thinking Alison was a prostitute to defending her when Thomas wouldn’t stop his remarks, her internalised misogyny taking further of a back seat. the collective development from season 1 where they wanted alison to leave, to leaving a glowing 5 star review for their gatehouse. i love this show so much.

On the other hand!!! Valtor LOVES to be the cause for her actions. He THRIVES knowing that Bloom does anything because of him, that he has any kind of direct influence on her. It's entirely possible his reaction would sum up to “she's a little confused, but she's got the spirit!” Additionally, he's never really jealous per se, in Sparked. He thinks Sky is boring and is insulted that Bloom — HIS equal and nemesis! — would waste time on her boyfriend when she could be hunting him instead. And later it’s more that he hates how much Bloom genuinely cares for him, not that he would really acknowledge that. Since I think he's somewhat casual about sex I don’t even think he would be that mad about a one night stand if he can tell himself that really, she was thinking of him all along. The thing that would really set him off is if Bloom entered a serious relationship with someone he deems actually competent and potentially worthy of her, like Stella, because THAT would be a threat.
