Bungou Stray Dogs. Dazai/Ranpo. Fluff.
.
.
"Apparently, this thing's called a Cheesy Baby Cookie."
Ranpo laughs at once, but swipes the sweet drink from Dazai's hand anyway. He's been craving something ridiculous for days. Dazai indulges him further, poking the plastic straw a few centimeters off-center. "Here you go."
Ranpo shakes the plastic cup gently before taking a sip. Not bad, actually.
The new boba shop across the Agency is "all sparkle and no substance," appealing only to grade-schoolers who like their tea sickeningly-sweet and creamy.
Its only saving grace is that Dazai likes it.
"Tastes more like ice cream, but surprisingly addicting," he had once offered a sip last week. That one had extra cheesecake cream piled on top of the crushed cookie, making the whole thing too thick to use a straw with.
It was the taste of Dazai's lips that lingered there that sold it for him. Ranpo knew how silly he was being, but he kept that to himself. "I want more of this weird drink. Bring me with you."
He made sure to cut the sugar content of today's order by half on Yosano's orders, since everyone's due for a yearly bloodwork soon. That brought out the taste of the black tea at least, he observes. It's surprisingly a good-quality brew for a fancy dessert aimed for children.
Dazai tugs at his shoulder, puppy-dog eyes more mischievous than eager. "Can I taste?"
Just when he was trying to wax poetic. "Sure, here."
"Yay!" Dazai reaches over and takes a huge sip out of the cup. Ranpo balks at the sight of the thick cream fast disappearing into his mouth.
The drink is already two-thirds gone in less than a minute. "I can't believe you," he mutters.
"Oh," Dazai realizes with a start.
Ranpo is still holding the cup close to his chest when they reach the Agency's doorstep, with Dazai hovering over him apologetically. "I'll buy you another," he offers, hands clasped together. Their salary isn't until next week, though, so that's definitely not happening. Hah.
Indulgence is a lovable beast, however, and Ranpo finds himself relaxing when he sees that Dazai means it this time. He puts the drink aside, swiping his tongue over his lower lip. "Tell me what it tasted like and maybe I'll reconsider."
Dazai beams at that. "Gladly." And he does.

What’s the theoretical maximum coda in English?
Non-loan roots have at most three coda consonants: glimpse, jinx. The unproductive affix -th extends the inventory of coda consonants: sixth, warmth, length. (As far as I can tell, no English words have /-Vsθ -Vmθ -Vkθ/.) Latin and German loans extend it further: sculpt, calx, infarct, quartz, Horst.
Theoretically, all English words not ending in a sibilant can take an affix in -s ~ -z -- the plural or the third-person singular present -- and all English words not ending in a coronal plosive can take -t ~ -d by verbing. Sixths, warmths, lengths, sculpts, calxed, infarcts, quartzed, Horsts. This brings the count up to four.
But it is is possible for words to be quoted. (There are two “is”es in the preceding sentence.) By quote-pluralization, any verbable word not ending in a coronal plosive can take -ts, as in “quartzed”s /kortsts/. This isn’t necessary for five-consonant coda clusters -- by pluralizing German loans we can get, for example, Ernsts and angsts -- but it’ll be important later.
As mentioned here, there’s a Russian town called Berdsk. This could be borrowed, verbed, and quote-pluralized, giving “Berdsked”s /berdskts/, with a six-consonant coda. But if Berdsk didn’t exist, it could just as well be invented; the inventory of town names is entirely incidental to questions of English phonotactics!
I have created a fictional country known as Hyper-Albania. The capital of Hyper-Albania is a city called Berndskth. I think this is pronounceable in American English; -rnd is a possible cluster that can readily take a sibilant affix, and -rdsk has been established with Berdsk. Given the existence of -rndz and -rdsk, -rndsk seems reasonable. And the affix -th is sufficiently promiscuous that it can create clusters with invalid subsets, like -ksθ.
The inhabitants of Berndskth are well-known in Hyper-Albania for their habit of, let’s say, throwing eggs in people’s faces; as a result, if someone throws an egg in your face, you’ve been Berndskthed, a word which has a seven-consonant coda cluster /-rndskθt/. This can then be quote-pluralized, producing the word-final cluster /-rndskθts/, which I think would not be prohibitively challenging for most native speakers of English to pronounce.
I’m not convinced that /-rln/ is valid in English, but if it is, the capital of Hyper-Albania will be renamed to Berlndskth.
(It may also be possible to construct a situation where a plural noun can be verbed and quote-pluralized, giving /berndskθsts/, although there are two problems with this: first, deletion of θ before s is common, and second, since the verbing of quoted plurals would produce a verb which could be quote-pluralized, and a quoted plural could be verbed, allowing the verbing of plural nouns would make it possible to construct codas of indefinite length.)
(Another option for reaching nine consonants is to accept the VC analysis of English nonlow long vowels, which would allow -wl. Since vowel + coda consonant co-occurrence restrictions are generally disregarded in onomatopoeia and loans -- oink, boink, Aung, Taung -- we could make a case for /-uwln/, which could be extended with /-skθ/ by analogy to Berdsk, and then verbed and quote-pluralized, giving “Boolndskthed”s /buwlndskθts/.)
