If James Bond was a Musical

This quarter, I’m taking a History of Musical Theater course and our recent assignment was to take one of our favorite non-musical movies and think about turning it into a musical. We had to choose 2 scenes and describe what type of song we would add. I had so much fun writing this little piece, and it really felt like a tumblr shitpost anyway, I knew I had to share it here.

I tried to embed as many of the videos as I could, but max limit is 4 videos so I do have clickable links for my video references.

One of my favorite film franchises is James Bond.

Over the summer we watched all 25 films and that was a blast! It’s hard to just pick 1 film to turn into a musical-ideally if James Bond was turned into a musical, I would have the story follow a compilation of all the films-but, if I had to choose just one, then the one film I would choose is No Time To Die.

This is the best James Bond film because it has so many beautiful homages to the previous 24 films and the story is simple enough because it's a love story.

The first scene I would add a song to is the car chase in the bulletproof Aston Martin DB5 I think I would title this scene and song Bullets and Betrayal.

I think this type of song would act as an I Want song. James wants to be with Madeline, have a happy life and spend the rest of his time with her, but with each bullet that hits the window, he feels the paranoia steep in. Madeline wants to have a clean slate as well, a new life away from the sins of her father, but she knows she’s been set up and has little opportunity to explain her side of the story.

This number would definitely have some exposition about the events leading to this point but I think James and Madeline would also sing about their wishes of being together and seeing it crumble around them.

The song I have in mind is Sunday In The Park With George from Sunday In The Park With George or even the Final Scene from Sweeney Todd. Unsurprisingly, Stephen Sondheim is great at creating songs that have overlapping lyrics and building tension, so his style of song is immediately what came to mind.

The reason I thought something like these two songs would work in the scene is because of the intensity that builds, especially in Sweeney Todd. Sweeney and Mrs.Lovette are singing over one another, not giving the other a true chance to explain.

Similarly to the scene in No Time To Die, James is paranoid and angry- thinking that this attack was brought on by Madeline’s secret past that she still refuses to tell him about- and Madeline is scared and anxious, obviously knowing that this is not her doing but when trying to explain James does not believe her.

The next scene I chose is the ending scene(duh, this moment is heartbreaking!). I think I would title this scene and song All The Time.

This moment is where we’d have our 11 o’clock number and this song would define the show. James and Madeline come together again after a wild ride of defeating bad guys and narrow escapes, singing about how they’ve had so much time, so little time, wish there was more time and wish that this moment in time-this intense moment of pain, would be over.

My immediate thought is to have James and Madeline duet We Have All The Time In The World by Louis Armstrong.

This song is important to the James Bond franchise because of On Her Majesty’s Secret Service(my 2nd favorite Bond film). I’m just saying, No Time To Die would not be as good as it is if On Her Majesty’s Secret Service did not come before. We Have All The Time In The World is a love song used for James and his wife Tracy. At the end of the film, as they’re riding off into the sunset, she is killed by James’ archenemy, Blofeld. While James cradles Tracy’s body in his arms, he says “We have all the time in the world.”

In this scene, you can hear the melody of We Have All The Time In The World being played at the beginning.

No Time To Die references this song and this line at the beginning and end of the film. The beginning of the film, James first says to Madeline, “we have all the time in the world” and again when he’s about to die and she’s just wishing they had more time, he responds “you have all the time in the world”. Who knew James Bond could be poetic?

I think turning Louis’s song into a duet like the dramatic climax Come What May from Moulin Rouge! Could be a fantastic way to have Madeline and James have their final moment together before the bombs go off.

If I ever get the chance to turn James Bond into a musical, We Have All The Time In The World will be referenced. I would want the overall vibe of the musical to be a little cheesy(lets be honest, most of James Bond is super cheese until you get to Daniel Craig’s series) but have a lot of heart. Moulin Rouge! Or Titanic or even South Pacific are all a vibe that I think could work well for the story. Something with action and adventure, romance and heartbreak…

Crowley would have loved Sweeney Todd. I suspect he would have told you that the original Sweeney Todd was nowhere near as interesting nor as good a barber or a singer, and that the original Mrs Lovett, the one with the pie shop in Bell Yard, wasn't exactly as depicted either. But he would have loved Sweeney's "Epiphany".

(For the curious, this was the best Sweeney I ever saw, Alun Armstrong and Julia Mackenzie, performed here for the 1994 Olivier Awards.)

Tim Drake and Red robin

Aka the whole identity problem.

So there’s a lot of discussion over Tim and what identity he is going to take up- this is by no means recent, it's been going on for over a decade. So for a lot of people who are newer to comics I want to explain why Red Robin isn’t really an option as a permanent identity for Tim, and what Red Robin means to Tim personally

So first off, for expositions sake, Tim didn’t create Red Robin. The costume nor the identity. It originated in the Kingdom Come Storyline and belonged to Dick Grayson

(Dick Grayson, Earth-22) Honestly i don’t want to get into the can of worms of Kingdom Come and it’s not that important to my point so just know this is where Red Robin comes from.

Okay now the first appearance of Red Robin in Main Continuity was in Countdown to Final Crisis where the mantle was taken by * drum roll*

Countdown #14 Jason Todd!! This is also not very important because Jason mainly does multiverse shenanigans that isnt important to my overall point. I just find it very funny that Jason was Red Robin before Tim. Also he kills an alternate universe version of the joker- Good for him!

Now into the stuff that actually affects Tim and why he chooses to don the Red Robin Mantle in the first place-towards the end of Tim’s robin run. Where we see Red Robin stalking Tim around Gotham.

Red Robin in Robin(1993) #177 This Red Robin ends up being Ulysses Armstrong( a gang leader and recurring baddie from Tim’s Robin run) and to say the least he does some not very nice things!! Said things including luring Tim into a warehouse and blowing him up(what is up with robins and warehouses seriously?) anyways looking good tim!

After this injury Tim wears the Red Robin cowl to hide/protect his identity while he takes care of Ulysses. And in the ensuing fight a bunch of children get blow up- it’s great and definitely good for our protagonists declining mental health, Now for a bit more exposition after this incident Tim helps break Jason out of prison who then dons a cringe batman suit and kills a shit ton of people- the infamous Battle For The Cowl storylines ensues. With Dick Grayson taking the mantle of Batman and Damian Wayne being gifted the Robin mantle. Though Dick wasn’t wrong to do this(which is a whole other thing to argue about) it upset Tim and he needed a new costume to wear on his quest to bring Bruce back. He chooses Red Robin, as it’s an identity he considers dirty and disconnected from both his previous titles and the rest of his family.

Red Robin(2009) #1

Tim is at a VERY dark place in his life during the Red Robin run. A lot of fanon characterizes Tim as pretty depressed and sad and almost all of that stems from this period of time exclusively- and it makes sense. Tim underwent a series of very serious and brutal losses under a pretty short period of time( Steph[briefly],his dad, Conner, Bart, and Bruce all dying). And though pretty much everyone was right to doubt him about the whole Bruce being alive thing that rejection definitely didn’t help things. For Tim Red Robin offers a sort of outlet he doesn’t have to be Tim he doesn’t have to necessarily be a good person he just needs to do what needs to be done( I’d argue for the beginning of Red Robin that’s his main philosophy)

In Adventure Comics(2009) #3 Tim reunites with Conner while he’s in Paris, where in Conner says this

Conner knows Tim better than anyone, keep that word Punishment in mind. As it comes back up again in** Red Robin(2009) #9**

And okay this being brought up again is a joke but i still think its true. Tim IS punishing himself. He hates he situation he’s in he hates that he can’t save anyone he hates that he keeps making the wrong decisions(having the children be near the bombs, helping Jason get out of prison, and basically everything that’s happened in Red Robin as well) Tim IS a good person and he has a very strong moral compass- so betraying any aspect of his conscience- pretending to be someone he’s not HURTS him.

At the end of Red Robin(2009) Tim tries to kill Captain Boomerang, the man who killed his father( see: identity crisis) , or he very nearly tries to anyways. He wants to kill him, HE IS ABOUT TO KILL HIM. but he doesn’t.

Tim is at a crossroads. He’s hurting but he still WANTS to be good. He ends up doing the right thing but is that what Tim wants? Tim is changing he’s not Robin anymore he’s becoming his own person his own individual.

So you may ask, what happens after this? Does Tim figure out who he wants to be? Does he make a decision? HAHA silly you!! NO!! Dc resets the whole universe, retcons Tim’s backstory erases all his character development then un-retcons his backstory etc etc leaving Tim Drake in character limbo for essentially a DECADE.

So all this backstory withstanding why do I think Red Robin is a bad choice for Tim as an identity(discounting the fact he’s not even RR anymore but just robin which is stupid and also dumb) ? Well Red Robin was never MEANT to be permanent- Red Robin was a temporary means to end, a tool to get to his destination. I see Red Robin as a chrysalis of sorts. Tim as Robin was the caterpillar, red robin was the chrysalis and his next identity would be who he becomes, or rather who he DECIDES to be. Having Red Robin as Tim’s main identity is a disservice to his character but also doesn’t allow him to complete his arc. Tim doesn’t have an identity he chose and wanted for himself; he hasn't even moved on from ROBIN. In order to develop as a character Tim NEEDS to discover an identity for himself, abandoning the robin mantle entirely.

I think there is hope, a lot of Tim’s content since and including Urban Legends have been largely about him discovering himself and searching for his identity. Let’s just hope DC actually follows through.

Here's my understanding of Cassandra Cain's style as a tween according to Shadows of a Batgirl (2019). I admire this storyline for offering a thoughtful glimpse into her years as a runaway. It addresses a longstanding curiosity within the fandom about how she navigated the streets of Gotham from ages 8 to 18. Sarah Kunh's response was both reassuring and heartwarming. Along with Nicole Goux, they presented a very refreshing, male gaze-free portrayal of a character who's often been subjected to both orientalism and misogyny since her 1999 inception.

Cassandra's wardrobe, primarily sourced from the Lost & Found at the library she squats, tells an interesting story. From items belonging to the elderly restaurant owner who took her in to forgotten garments left behind by it's clients, her outfits reflect a mix of eclectic patterns and floral motifs. Mismatched socks, fragmented jewelry, irrelevant pins; she possesses a childlike perception of clothing as just items that spark joy and interest which you can wear on your body. Under her father's tutelage, she was frequently adorned in sleek, ebony garments reminiscent of the classic ninja aesthetic, a theme that actually endures within her costume as an adult. However, her shift towards embracing lively, unrestrictive clothes serves as a symbol of her quest to reclaim her sense of self. This transition not only represents personal growth but also stands as a testament to her journey towards emancipation and independence.

She gets how sharing clothes can be a way of showing affection. A love langage, if you will. Her transition from being dressed by others to dressing herself, and choosing to wear similar items as the elderly lady who helped her, rather than conforming to what she sees people in the streets wearing, vividly illustrates this understanding.

As she grows up and is incorporated into the Batfamilly, you can see who she's hanging out with the most at any given moment depending on what she wears and what she listens to. Slightly form fitting turtle necks, high rise office trousers, Prada loafers and Louis Armstrong records blasting on repeat ? She's on a mission with Bruce. Probably overseas where they spend so much time huddled together they practically function as a tandem. One breathes in the other breathes out, siamese twins that aren’t attached.

Leather jackets reeking of cheap cologne, tight jeans, loose morals, khôl stained waterline, knee high socks; she's with Jason Todd, out on a crossover mission. She pretends to read a classic novel, just like him, but the whole time her book's upside down.

Mostly it's oversized basketball tee-shirts, strawberry shampoo smelling scrunchies, Tupac playing on the radio and haphazard liner because, she's Steph's before she's anyone elses.

On missions outside of the country when she's not Orphan nor Cassandra but something in between, perhaps her truest self, it does gravitate towards black and grunge, the way you’d expect Orphan to be out of costume. Only then is she true to her upbringing, to who she'd be without her family.

Hiiiii everyone, I am back again. I'm starting to get used to my new classes, which may be considered a while for some people. I would have updated y'all last week, but I had NOTHING but music. and honestly, that's just boring. Literally last week I thought I was being nice to myself by not doing my homework for a very important class.... It was due the next day. I cried myself to sleep at 3 am because of how terrible I was with managing myself. I mean my brain was melting since I took a quiz before that and the teacher was relatively very demanding with the questions.... sooo yeah. I put this on myself......haha......... I lived though. Miraculously.

I’ve still been working on more locations! Whoopee! The player's room is done. there iiiiiis another location that was not originally on the GASA4 map like ever but was on Todd's Breakfast Adventure, but I decided since it was associated with spooky shit, you know damn well I'm gonna use it. I started working on the upstairs section of it. I also reworked the GASA4 house because I didn't like the way it was handled before, and yeah it's a bit glitchy but it works for how I want it to be.

I'm almost done with making the music. I just have to make music for outside the house and the Diner, and then after the 10th dev log you guys will be spared from any of my music.

Aaaaanyways, here is some of the music I made recently. They're pretty short compared to the usual because they're gonna be looped a lot (one of the songs has me singing in it (and is the only song with vocals, because I hated the vocals for Semicolon, so I had to rip 'em out), and I can't sing. I imagine them running away together and being frightful and uncertain yet assured knowing they have each other. (but that lingering sense of “You can’t go back” is ever present and it’s nearly dreadful!)

Fun fact: this song got me through costume making. this song is in wall-e and aside from being one of the most beautiful songs ever in existence it is SO….I can’t even begin to describe. something about being loved enough for a whole lifetime in only a brief moment….do you think that even though the time neil and todd had together was short it was some of if not the best time of their lives?
