I have a ton of headcanons

- L gets really goofy when he’s super sleep deprived. He can go two weeks max without hallucinating. If he goes past that, he l kicks his feet and giggles and is all sorts of goofy. (One time when Light and L were handcuffed, L had stayed up for a couple weeks by accident and Light had to have a date with Misa the next day. As interesting as the case L is sharing is, it’s 3 in the morning my guy-)

- Light likes mint chip ice cream

- L can’t stand the texture of the word “socks”

- Matsuda loves Christmas music, L and Light hate it. L bans Matsuda from playing it without headphones in. Matsuda plays it at full volume through his headphones and lays the headset next to L and Light randomly throughout November-December. L can’t technically get mad since Matsuda is technically following the rule and he hates it.

- L has to do a double take every time Matsuda says something smart.

- “This is the same man who played Mariah Carey on November 1st, what do you mean he- it’s definitely a clone. There’s no other explanation”

- L randomly yells out to every happy whatever holiday it is because he forgets what everyone celebrates because he knows too many holidays.

- It’s the only way he keeps track of what day it is

- L was a show choir kid

- That’s how he is so mobile and flexible and knows how to fight, he was a ✨dancer✨

- He is a bass, but can hit soprano notes

- L can play poker

- L loves pumpkin spice

- L also loves dad jokes. They’re so amazingly bad that Soichiro winces at them. It’s amazing. Misa absolutely loves them.

- On a related note: Soichiro (before the Kira case) absolutely told so many dad jokes that embarrassed Light so much. Light every once in a while will let a dad joke slip because he grew up with them and every time he is so disappointed in himself.

- Light wore a dress one time to prove a point/on a dare. He’s loved dresses since. Soichiro actively bought him the first dress when Light asked for it.

- L is a hot coffee drinker, Light is an iced coffee drinker

- Update: I learned L canonically lets his hot coffee run cold. Still, headcanon applies: he always makes it hot at first and will either drink it so it burns his mouth or it’s cold. No inbetween

- Light has pictures of L on his phone like how some people have pictures of their cats/dogs/kids

- L had an underground fanbase that was so small due to a lack of knowledge and publicity about him. When the Kira case and L went public happened, the fanbase was like “WE LOVED L BEFORE IT WAS COOL!!” And there would be comments and tumblr posts and stuff being like “like if you were here before Kira 😜” and stupid stuff like that like how you know fan bases are.

- Bonus: Light started the fanbase in middle school and he was a very well know L x Reader fic writer, but he kept his identity secret. He wrote fics of every au, had x male, x female, and x nonbinary stories. He was so well known that that he had his own little fanbase

- One day, Light got bored of writing the fics and wasn’t hyperfixated on L anymore so he just randomly stopped and his fans were concerned and worried that L thought he knew to much and got to him

- Light’s online name would be “Moon” because it would be hilarious

- (Somewhat) Related: Light wrote fanfiction in middle school and freshman year

- L proposing to Light, and instead of Light being like “damn it! I wanted to do that first!” Or have any irritation, he just gets the biggest smile plastered on his face as he looks at the ring on his finger, a complete loss for words

- L can pole dance (respectfully clothed thank you very much) because he wanted to spite a teacher in highschool

-fuck it, L has a ton of random hobbies that make no sense and half the time he has a story behind it

- he can play drums and guitar and a little piano, but can’t play a flute and it will always anger him because he knows he has the breath support for this, so why can’t he??

Dr. Feel Good

"Hi, Dr. S. I uh, well, I'm not going to be able to make my appointment tomorrow. I'm sorry this is technically less than 24 hours. Bill me for any time you may have lost. Whatev– thanks. Oh, this is y/n, by the way, and it's about 4 o'clock. Bye. You don't have to call me back. Bye."

You pressed the red button on your cell phone and hung up the call with Dr. Shinazugawa's voice-mail and climbed back into your bed. The rain beat against the windows in rhythm with the tears falling to your face.

It was November 1st. Fall was in full swing. And once again, you were not. Your 24th birthday was coming up soon. And you'd fallen into the same routine as last year. Going through the motions: work, family, the few friends you had. But you're fairly certain they were sick of you. So it was just a matter of time before they stopped calling. It's not like you're blowing up their phones to remind them you're still around.

The phone rang. You didn't even bother to see who was calling before you turned it over to silence the assault on your quiet cocoon. [Beep beep]. One more message you won't respond to. "I don't wanna talk. Go away." It started ringing again.

"Fuck, what, hello?" You sniffed and pulled the down comforter off of your face. You didn't want to sound like you were in bed as you squirmed around to get comfortable.

"Hello! Y/n? I just got your message." Silence on your end. "Are, are you there?" You cleared your throat. What's the point of talking anymore. "Ah, there you are." Dr Shinazugawa said a little too cheerfully.

You're surprised by the inflection of his voice. You often thought he was like you; dark. But he was your therapist. You were not his. So you didn't worry about him like you assumed he worried about you. Like you hoped he did. More wasted energy.

"Y/n, c'mon. Will you say something to me?" Sitting up in bed, "Why." You said flatly. You could hear his breath slow a little, and you sort of wondered why his breathing would ease up when you were on the other end of the line. Probably irritating him, no doubt.

"Because I wa–" He stopped for a moment. "I need to know you're alright." There was a pregnant and overdue pause from him. "Y/n? Are you? Ok?" You sniffed again. Could he hear you crying? "Will you please come in tomorrow and talk with me?" He could hear the hurt in your words.

"I'll see you next week, Dr. S. Have a nice weekend. Bye." You took the phone away from your ear before you'd even started to say you'll see him at your next appointment. You didn't want to give him that crucial second before disconnection to try and change your mind. He was just your therapist. Not Jesus. Though you could easily find yourself at his feet asking for miracles. No matter, you weren't terribly religious anyway.

Pandora Hearts Month 2022 (REDO) Prompts!

Hello all!

I have recently learned that the @phmonth2022 blog is experiencing some technical difficulties—and has for longer, and a greater extent, than I realized. I don't get notifications properly, I don't get notified at all if people tag the blog, my posts don't show up in site's tags, and it seems you have to click on the blog itself to see any of its posts.

It seems as though a number of people who wanted to participate in Phmonth22 in May/June...never saw the posts about it.

This means that we will now be doing a redo of Pandora Hearts Month 2022!

It will have the same exact prompts as before, allowing people who didn't see it before—and anyone who otherwise didn’t get the chance before—to participate now! It will occur at the same time as The Case Study of Vanitas Month 2022! (Check here for those prompts!)

nanowrimo 2022

hi i just wanted to announce that i wrote a lot of words. i cannot remember if i even mentioned that consequences started as a nano project and was supposed to be just 50k words (that did not happen lmao). more details under the cut as i’m writing this at 12:30 am after an 8k day and so i’m just gonna word vomit about this

okay, so, for starters this is my third nano year ever and in a row. i have actually won both years previously, but always with a very desperate last push to get over the line and usually just barely before midnight. there was a rush to update with 10 minutes left on the clock here in the PNW, but not to hit 50k.

i hit 50k all the way back on the 18th of november, and in the 12 days after that i nearly doubled my word count and my goal. i hit my three highest single day word counts this year, that being: 6,130 words on the 1st; 7,306 on the 28th; and 8,087 words yesterday on the 30th. i went into this year’s nano with three goals in mind. One, and most importantly: get the fucking consequences rewrite started because i did NOT handwrite around 17k words over the month of october for my damn story outline only to not go anywhere. Two: hit 50k this year and continue my winning streak. Three, if possible: get every badge on a project for the first time by writing at least 1667 words every day. i did all three

this was not easy. i was really lucky to a) have the musical i’m in be pushed back from opening in the first week of december to opening the the second weekend of january. if this had not happened i would have been writing through tech week and as a lead in the show i’m in i simply would have not had the time. b) had very light workloads in all of my classes and my creative writing class being dedicated solely to working on nanowrimo. no my teacher does not know i wrote fanfiction and no she does not get to know. c) had a ton of support from the two local regions whose borders i technically straddle. it’s a whole thing i’m not getting into because i am not telling a bunch of internet strangers where i live, sorry guys :( this was a really long post ik but i just needed to vomit it out somewhere because i feel like this is an accomplishment worth sharing? also i’m really sorry to announce that chapter 3 ain’t going up until i finish chapter 4 and although i promise i’m really close to finishing chapter 4 i’m not letting myself touch it for the next few days. actually that brings me to another point i’m sorry this is all stream of consciousness and i cannot be effed to edit it right now but! most surprising thing of overachieving this hard?? i actually really want to write right now and am likely going to have to actively force myself to take a break for at least the next day or so. i’m not proud of everything i wrote this month but i wrote a lot that i am proud of and everything that’s on my doc feels good to me right now. For anyone else who did NaNoWriMo this year and actually read to the end of the post, I have one last heartfelt message to y’all. No matter who you are, no matter where you come from or what you do, no matter what goal you started out the month with and no matter whether it changed or not. No matter if you wrote 1k, 10k, 25k, 50k or even beyond that, you did it. You got through November. You got through NaNoWriMo. You wrote words that no one else could have, You created something else no one could have. Whatever you wrote is uniquely yours, and you took a first step that so many people never took just by writing your story down. Whether you finished your story or, like me, still have a long ways to go from where you are now, you did something beautiful and so very impressive. And if there is no one else in your life who appreciates your accomplishments, then know that I do. The first draft might suck, but that’s okay! Twice now I’ve completely thrown away my previous year’s draft; only now that I am on a third year with a third draft do I feel this that my story is actually close to about as good as it’ll get. Lmaoooo. It's only August 6th and already I have written 16/30 of my Writember prompts...

The power of the Stranger Things brainrot is incredible. Also of the ones I queued today, (five total) most have some mention of Lumax and two focus on them. They are the only good [canon] couple.

[Except Jopper, I guess, but it's hard to write characters that are that age as a young adult].

But yeah! More than halfway done with my prompts! :D We out here, vibing!

Prompt 001 drops today! And I just finished prompt 020, meaning, I have the first 3 weeks done finally. My brain did not want to work on 020 specifically for some reason, and I was fighting it a lot.

It's not a great finished product, admittedly, but darn it all I beat the brain mush! Now it's only 22-25 and 27-30 left. Making it only 8 more prompts to do before I'm free of this mess that I put myself in lmao.

On September 11th, 2020, I posted this, a teaser for a 'faux Earthbound-inspired project' featuring four brightly colored silhouettes of its four main characters. The concept and characters were shrouded in mystery up until April 7th of the following year, where I posted yet another teaser in the form of an in-game screenshot, revealing the character of Lauren Henley and the project's placeholder title, Project 2000.

In that post, I mentioned that Project 2000 isn't the project's final name, and that I would be unveiling its true name later on down the line. The truth of the matter was that I could have gone and revealed the true name as early as... well, 2020 if I wanted to. But a lot of the project was still being figured out at that time (Including the designs of its main characters!), and I wanted to hold off on revealing anything more until I knew I was 100% ready to explain what this 'Project 2000' even is.

Now, nearing a year after I posted the initial first teaser, I feel as though it's about time to introduce a few more original characters of mine to this blog, and with that being said...

Let's talk about Override!

Shigesato Itoi's 1994 cult classic Earthbound (Known as MOTHER 2 in Japan) flopped due to misleading marketing when it came around to being released in the states, but its witty humor, nonstandard JRPG setting and its colorful visual presentation proved to be a hit to the American audience in due time.

This, of course, led to creators opting to shape games around a similar basis to Earthbound, whether its in terms of graphical style, humor, battle tactics, and much more. I think the most popular example when the phrase "Earthbound-Inspired RPG" comes to mind is undoubtedly Toby Fox's Undertale, which shared a lot of the same humor as its inspiration as well as a similar graphical style.

Some fans liked the MOTHER series so much that they wanted to take the franchise into their own hands and create the next installment after Shigesato Itoi stated that MOTHER 3 was the last game in the franchise, and MOTHER 4 began production by fans. Many Winter 2014s later, it was unsure if the game was still in production, though the project was officially rebranded as its own entity as Oddity in 2020.

Override is, essentially, my kind of Undertale/Oddity, mixing elements from Earthbound, MOTHER 3, the Y2K bug and the general 2000s aesthetic together into one. By that first part, I mean it's an Earthbound-Inspired RPG crafted by my own hand (Dating as far back as mid-2019); it, of course, isn't an actual game, but rather a collection of conceptual art pieces and faux in-game screenshots I've made detailing what it would look like as a real game (Like Mega Man Ultimate).

Oh, right, the plot! Bear in mind that a lot of the finer details of Override's story haven't quite been figured out yet, but I can say that I at least have enough to finally get around to talking about it.

Charles Feldman, CEO of Synergon Robotics, longs to spearhead a dystopian world with an invincible army of technologic law-enforcers, though finds it almost impossible to in his current time, the year 2095, where such technology is commonplace.

For years, he has meticulously shaped a plan where he, a team of subordinates and all the robo-security he could need would time travel back just before the year 2000, wherein he would corrupt all technology at that point with a 'Y2K Bug' and force the denizens of the world to live a lifestyle not unlike the events of the novel 1984, wherein humanity's every move is closely observed, and if someone steps out of line, they fall to the wrath of the Synergon Police.

His plan, for the most part, is successful. He travels back to the date November 18th, 1997 to have enough time to prepare for his eventual world-ruling plan on midnight, January 1st, 2000. The aforementioned Synergon police are armed with powerful devices called 'Psiometers', which are watch-like gadgets which connect to the user's neural network to unlock the powers of the mind.

Psiometers alongside other tech necessary for Feldman's ploy are transferred base-to-base in the middle of the night via drones, which are equipped with cameras and can hold up to twenty pounds of equipment. However, on the night of December 30th, 1999, a flaw in the wrap-up of Feldman's ultimate plan occurs, when a last minute drone delivery of two Psiometer units results in a crash.

The drone lands in the yard of the Henley residence. Nine and a half year old Lauren Henley overhears the crash and goes outside to investigate, finding the busted drone amidst the snow. After another brief malfunction, it shuts itself down, and Lauren, vowing to figure out its origins, drags it into the garage and goes back to bed...

December 31st, 1999. Lauren brings the Synergon drone to her neighbor's house, and shows it to her best friend, nine year old Casey Treverton. The two shortly discover the drone's contents, and Lauren instantly suspects there's more to the Synergon story. They ultimately are short on answers for the time being, and keep the whole thing a secret from their parents until later that night...

One minute until the new year. Casey and Lauren hurry to the downstairs of the Treverton residence to catch the ball drop for the new millennium. Whatever weirdness happened earlier is put on the backburner as the two flop down in front of the TV, eagerly counting down the seconds left of 1999.

"5... 4... 3... 2..."

Then, a nationwide power shortage. Nobody has any clue what's going on. Eventually, the TV flickers back on, and instead of the new year festivities they had been watching prior, the picture depicts a grizzled although finely dressed man in front of a white backdrop; Charles Feldman.

He states that his message is being broadcast across every television in the country, and reveals his lengthy plan to create a highly technical dystopian society overseen by Synergon Robotics, threatening to rewire any technology he pleases for the worst should anyone oppose him.

Casey and Lauren grimace at each other.

Three months pass. Not a lot has changed this early on in, though the citizens of Maywood are under close surveillance by various automatons to make sure nobody tries anything funny. Lauren decides that she has had enough of this 'Synergon Business' and asks Casey if he's interested in figuring out how the Psiometers work and using them against Synergon to ultimately take them down.

At first, Casey is unsure, true to his nervous personality. There isn't any rational way two children could lead to the downfall of an entity which has taken over the world, but Lauren is sure of their success, and with enough coercing the two embark on a mission to take back what's theirs. Who do they meet along the way? Just how deep does the Synergon plan run? And will they reign victorious? Only time will tell...

Well, now that we have the lengthy scene-setting out of the way, let's check out the good stuff; checking out the four heroes of Override which were teased last year! It's a good thing I chose to wait to show their designs off, because the silhouettes shown in the teaser weren't the same designs as what I have now. So, let's get right into it!

It may have taken much longer than I expected to show Override off, but at the very least that means I can now get around to posting/writing about what I've come up for it! I have a lot of Override-related content on the way, though I find that this is an excellent way to introduce its world! A LOT of work was put into this, so I hope you've enjoyed everything this post has to offer!

End of Year Collage - Best of 2020

I did this last year and decided to make one for 2020, to celebrate simming, the one source of joy I got out of this crapfest of a year.

I used the TumblrTop10 generator for my top CC uploads, which naturally get more traffic than my gameplay pics & photosets.

But I like giving a top 10 for my gameplay pics too, looking back at all my fave fandoms I incorporated into The Sims 3 throughout the year.

My theme for February was Voodoo and Necromancy. The irony doesn’t escape me that I had my best creative boost (focused on morbid/macabre themes), right before the pandemic hit.

March-April: Roaring 3020s Gameplay!

These 2 months were all about my futuristic-Asian-scifi-artdeco/nouveau save in Oasis Landing, where I give the backstory of how Sakura and Ryuu first met. I always describe Sakura as a faery from the future, and this is what I mean by that; she’s a jet-setting time-traveler. Y’all seemed to really like my posts of Sakura this month, particularly her arrival in Oasis Landing in March, and her One Four All challenge in April. But by far the post that got the most attention were my WIPs of Hotel Luck at the end of April, the headquarters of Ryuu’s best friend Lucky’s club.

May: Green Isle, and Malec’s Wedding!

May was totally dominated by my run-through of @crowkeeperthesimmer ‘s Green Isle (Beta) world. But the most emotionally driven gameplay pics I posted this month were actually from my Shadowhunters saves, where I finally got around to recreating Malec’s wedding, which I posted on their 1st year anniversary. ^_^ *blasts Ruelle*

June: Rainbows! 🌈

I started the month still gushing about how pretty Green Isle is, which was great, cuz it was Pride Month! 🏳️‍🌈 Because the events of Summer 2020 were downright disgusting, I had Bartros & Nagron, and Gwynburn & Malec do community work in honor of LGBT+ and Black Lives Matter solidarity.

July: Bleach Gameplay starts!

I have been dying to start sharing my Bleach inspired gameplay for months. Bleach is one of my Top 5 fave anime, quite possibly even Top 3 (it’s tied with Attack on Titan). So I tried my best to do the anime justice in TS3, giving me recreation of Episode 1, when Ichigo Kurosaki becomes a shinigami. I plan on doing A LOT more; it’s just gonna take awhile.  

August: Sakura & Ryuu in What? Magazine

Technically, my Sim Bin Collage Pt2 got the most notes this month, but that’s not really gameplay. Even though I posted a bunch of Dragon Age gameplay, people were far more interested in Sakura’s post, particularly my fake What Magazine post, where I trolled y’all with a tabloid spread of Sakura and Ryuu caught by the paps getting frisky in the park.

September: Dragon Retexture WIPs Pt2

According to the Chinese, 2020 is the Year of the Rat, but I was all the way in the Year of the Dragon, baby! #SquadGoals #BoyBandRealness (And I was back in Green Isle AGAIN, lol!)

October: Dragon Master

I love Simblreen, and the Halloween season; it always puts me in a creative mood. But the best inspiration I got this year was after my anime marathon binge of the Bleach spinoff, Burn the Witch, which gave me the idea to make dragons as functional magic broomsticks. I had the occult household from my Deathless gameplay test out all the CC I made for Simblreen. Everyone seemed to really like that, and I was so happy!

November: Shinto Shrine vs DA:I - Tevinter

Another classic example of the photosets I did the bare minimum on that get like twice the amount of notes as posts I’m insanely proud of. XD

I try to upload CC at least once a month, but I’ve had such low motivation this year that come November I was scrambling trying to think of something to make. Then TS4′s Snowy Escape EP came out and I was like BINGO. So I did all of that in a few days, really quickly, and cracked open my Moon Medicine save to test the CC & take pics. No big.

But I’ve been working hard on my Dragon Age INSP gameplay & pics for well over a YEAR, and I had been so excited to start posting my Tevinter gameplay with Dorian Pavus. That Blood Magic post got far less traction, but that’s like the best photoset I think I made all year. Crazy how Tumblr works. :\

December: A Bunch of Stuff Happened, Holy Cow!

First there was the Pinterest Challenge, which y’all really seemed to like. Then I did another installment of BrennaIvy’s Modern Male Project (which got the most notes for December). Then I did Magnus Bane’s birthday post for the Shadowhunters fandom, which is usually one of my more popular posts. But then I posted my WIPs of my Maximalism set, and y’all really REALLY liked that one, so basically I was so so happy this December! :D

I Made Stuff in 2020

In 2020 I re-watched Leverage, which led me to tumblr, which led me to seeing these posts about this movie The Old Guard, which led me to watch one of the best films I’ve ever seen, which led me to AO3, which led me to discord. Before falling down The Old Guard rabbit hole, I hadn’t written fanfiction since 2012. Unsurprisingly, a lot has changed since 2012 for me and for the internet. For the first time since my participation in internet fandom, I feel like I’ve found a community online and that is probably the big theme of this post: making for each other has been an absolute joy in an otherwise pretty shit year.

This is not really a year in review, so much as a last two months review (my first fic of the year was published on November 2nd) but it’s been a utterly delightful and impactful couple of months, so here we are. On to the fics!

1. The Sport of Bright Steel - This was the fic that started it all.  Someone on the Old Guard kinkmeme prompted a Joe/Nicky fic from the POV of their swords and I sat down on my couch one Saturday morning and an hour later had a lil piece of fanfiction all written out. And then I panicked that it was terrible and weird and so posted it anonymously to the kinkmeme. And then someone in the discord rec-ed it in the fanfic channel and then I dusted off my old AO3 account and posted for the first time in 8 freaking years.

2. Our Toil Shall Strive to Mend - This was my second foray back into fanfic (once again, inspired by a kinkmeme prompt), and the first multi-chaptered fic I ever wrote. Big manly man with tiny human? I am weak. I love all of the Old Guard characters, but I think Booker will forever be my favorite to explore in fic. Unlike the others, Booker is a reluctant soldier and much of his pain comes from losing his identity as a husband and father. This fic asks what if Booker’s path to healing comes in the form of fatherhood? Writing the last chapter made me cry happy-sad tears for him.

3. The Perfect Shot - From the idea that both snipers and photographers are in search of “the perfect shot” came this delightfully silly little fic. Nicolo di Genova, sniper and international man of mystery, knows one damn pun/pick-up line and just so happens to find the one man (Joe, photojournalist) whom it works on hook-line-sinker. Everything about this is fun and makes me happy. Never in a million year would I have written this, if not for a very silly post on this website that someone on discord suggested as a Joe/Nicky prompt. Inspiration strikes in the most unexpected of ways. And I fucking love puns, y’all.

4. This Rough Magic - Nicky is a selkie who accidentally get himself married to unsuspecting, marine scientist Joe and it might be my favorite thing I’ve written all year. It’s a story about identity and the unexpected and being willing to take a leap of faith. This fic would not have happened without the discord, and made me so so grateful and happy to be creating with other people and as part of a community. The joy of fanfic is that it is freely created and given, and I never would have dared to write this story without the inspiration, support, and enthusiasm from internet friends. 

5. Bring the World Back into Tune - aka my Book of Nile opus, still a work in progress. Technically it’s a Hades/Persephone fusion, but really it’s about finding family, finding healing, and finding love, about making meaningful choices despite whatever fate or the supernatural has in mind. I fell into Book of Nile because who they are beyond being immortal has so much in common: growing up basically ghettoized in a country that doesn’t give a damn about you, fighting for an imperial army because there were no other viable choices, knowing the pain of missing 1st families. In Bring the World Back into Tune I love that I get to explore what it means to be fated for something (they’ve become Hades and Persephone without realizing it, in addition to the whole immortal thing), and also what it means to still get to choose how you arrive at and cope with that fate. Very few people are reading this on AO3, but it’s something I love working on and through because the characters and ideas are so compelling.

Honorable Mention: Leaving AO3 Comments - One of my greatest joys this year has been in giving to others the kind of love and support I’ve received as a person who makes stuff on the internet. I love leaving AO3 comments, and applying my English major brain to what I’m reading. The things we love most are deserving of our critical attention, including and especially fanfiction. I’ve met fandom soul-mates in the AO3 comments and befriended authors. In response to a shitty anon comment on another fic, I crafted what might be my fanfic manifesto: why fanfic is the heir of western storytelling moreso than our popular media and why the “expectedness” of fanfic is in fact its greatest feature, not it’s biggest flaw. It is A+ work, if I do say so myself.

None of this would have been possible without the internet (the kinkmeme, tumblr, discord, and of course AO3) and, perhaps more importantly, without the great, supportive Old Guard fan communities. Thank you for the beautiful fic and stunning art. For the thoughtful meta and funny headcanons. For the cheering and screaming and encouragement. For the kudos and comments. We make for ourselves and each other and that’s a truly remarkable thing.

Halloween in Silver Lake

Maybe Halloween is technically just a single evening, we all know it’s so much more than that. It’s time to rewatch all our favorite scary movies while we wait for the spookiest day of the year—and fear not, there will be a party at the end of the month!

Save the dates: October 23rd to November 1st.

More details will be released in the near future, so for now stay tuned for those and sink into the fall vibes. Bring out the plastic skeletons and cobwebs, wish for some sweater weather, and maybe start to think about your costume. Last one at the pumpkin patch loses!

Pumpkin Carving @ Silver Lake Farmers Market — Every weekend in October

Time to get those Jack’o’lanterns out on the porch! Open for all ages, volunteers have set up a little workshop and are ready to provide tools, inspiration, and delightful company. Grab some pumpkin spice whatever from one of the nearby vendors and have a cozy old time.

World Vegetarian Day @ Lotus — 1 October

Why not start your month off with a feast of delicious vegetables? Whether you’re just skipping meat or going full vegan, your local health food hub offers a free juice of your choice with the purchase of any meal off their menu. Try a seasonal salads with roasted veggies, or maybe a nice bowl of soup. Great for your body and for the planet!

National Frappe Day @ Intelligentsia — 4 October

If you need a break from all those PSLs and hot chocolates, maybe a nice cold frappe can tempt you? For one day only, the entire selection has been reduced to just $3. Quite a steal if you’re looking to stay cool and caffeinated! And don’t worry, if you’re not sick of the pumpkin spice yet, they’ve got you covered there too. 

Costumes for a Cause @ Funkytown Thrift — 10-11 October

For the sixth year in a row, Funkytown presents their costume-sewing workshop, turning scrap fabrics and old clothes into Halloween costumes for disadvantaged children. Even if you’re not a fashion mogul in the making, a cute little sheet ghost may go a long way! Refreshments can be bought at a low price, and all proceeds are of course donated to charity.

International Nacho Day @ Paco’s Tacos — 21 October

The name of Paco’s joint is certainly no coincidence, but many Silver Lake residents swear that his gigantic nacho platters could dethrone his tacos any day of the week. It’s a controversial opinion for sure but if you’re not a believer yet, this just might be the day to come down and see how they stack up--and get 10% off on nachos all day and night!

Horror Story Contest @ Book Nook — 30th October

Got a little Stephen King or Clive Barker in you? Time to let ‘em out! All month long, Book Nook will be accepting short story submissions and on the 30th, the ten most promising authors will get to read their stories aloud for a crowd! The winning author receives a $100 gift card to the Book Nook and their story printed in the Silver Lake Sentinel. If you don’t fancy yourself the next RL Stine and prefer getting goosebumps, grab a friend and come cast your vote.

Road work ahead? Sure hope it does! The proposal for the work is about about as old as that Vine, but the workers are finally getting on it. City council suggests rerouting your commute down Micheltorena Street for a while, so prepare for some mild inconvenience for the next week or so as the entire stretch of Redcliff Street gets an overhaul. Hopefully by the end of it all, your street will be better than ever!

haven’t posted a life update in a while

so march was a month. before this pandemic situation lifted off, my grandmother died age 96 on march 1st after suffering a terrible stroke. it’s sad she’s gone, but she had just lost her independence in the months before and didn’t want to go on anymore. I feel weird about her death because she was kind of a complicated figure in the family. she absolutely adored me and her other few grandchildren and we could basically do no wrong in her eyes, but despite being so nice to us she was something else altogether to my mum, so I’ve never known how to feel about her. I know she had a very hard life but it seems she took a lot of her anger out on others around her who didn’t deserve it. in her last decade of life she lost her sight which was also really sad because I know I could have made her really happy if she’d been able to see any of my art or photography. travelling to the other side of the country many times a year to see her has been a routine my entire life and it’s strange to think that’ll never happen again now. but it’s all over now, may she rest in peace.

otherwise as you’d expect I’m out of college and back home what with the pandemic situation. like lots of places ireland is on lockdown. at this point I guess I can say - against all the odds, I made it through my first year of college babey!!! technically the year isn’t over yet and I’m still doing assignment work from home, but it sure feels like the year came to an unceremonious early end. kind of hilarious to me that my first year at re-entering life in general I wind up back at home due to a pandemic, and not my own health issues. but the early return home is honestly welcome to me because college was really hard for me.

I have some good health news relating to diet, which is that I changed my diet quite dramatically in recent months which is actually having very good results for both my physical health and my psychological appetite, which is good because I’ve had borderline eating disorder symptoms on and off for a long time, and the fatigue from college was bringing them back big time.

for whatever reason I’ve felt for ages that carbohydrate never really did anything for me but I just ate it out of habit and trying to be normal or whatever. my mum casually brought up trying a ketogenic diet which I barely knew anything about, but basically just remove carbohydrate and up your fat intake as your body will switch to burning fat as primary energy source in its absence. anyway I decided to try this and it took pretty much zero effort to remove carbohydrate, and sure enough I upped my fat intake and my weight loss has actually dramatically accelerated and eating in general is a bit easier. not sure I’ll ever have an amazing appetite, but it’s better than it used to be, so that’s promising.

another thing that’s unceremoniously ended for the time being is a brave endeavour I started taking since november: I started taking dance classes! my sister got married in october and the wedding made me realise I really needed to learn how to dance. it was probably the most difficult and intimidating thing I’ve done in a long time but I started attending weekly classes and was actually slowly getting places. one nice thing was that a girl there seemed to take an interest in me and was inviting me out with her friends and I think she liked me? I don’t know but at the very least she wanted to be friends, so that was nice.

but yeah here we are! my first year of college is over early, I’m still alive, and there’s a pandemic. life feels very strange
