Small Miracles
Beth Greene is not dead. Though it is not for a lack of trying.
After eight long years spent in the CRM's grasp, struggling to find reasons to continue surviving, Beth finally finds her reason: Rick and Daryl are alive, and they are closer than she ever could've guessed. Now she must take advantage of her only opportunity to escape and track them down.
Along the way, she revisits all of the places that changed her into who she has become. And she is forced to remember who she truly is at heart despite how unrecognizable she finds herself.
But she has an unexpected ally along for the journey. Just the same as her, he is somewhat of a living miracle. Except he's no longer living... he's a walker.
Moonshine Awards 2023 Third Place Winner for Best WIP ZA, and Second Place Winner for Best WIP Reunion/Fix It!
Chapter 23 // Part 14: Cherry Grove Gas Station
He looks no different than any other walker in that moment, completely succumbing to his instincts as he reaches in and pulls out viscera, tendons, entire organs, and brings them to his mouth, chewing and chewing, barely swallowing before reaching in for more. More. More. More. Even through the sounds of the squelching and chewing, Beth finally hears it. The death rattle. And then his eyes finally shut. His chest falls and does not rise again. And he goes completely still. Gale keeps eating.

it's going to take you people years to recover from all of the damage - chapter 24 - Glenn
What if... Glenn Rhee lives, and so does his sister-in-law?
“What are you guys doing here?” Jerry asks, as Aaron instantly clocks the way Daryl is pacing.
“What’s wrong?” is the first question out of his mouth and Glenn shakes his head.
“Everything’s fine back home,” he assures them quickly and Aaron doesn’t relax, his eyes still bouncing back and forth between Glenn’s still form and Daryl’s constantly moving one. “We just — your letter. About the leader here.”
“What about her?” Jerry’s hand goes to rest of the handle of his axe, ever strapped to his back.
Glenn flounders for a second on how to explain all of this, then settles for simplicity. “I — we — think that she might be one of us. From… Georgia.”
“Oh.” Aaron’s brow furrows slightly, as though he’s just realizing something. “She did… She did say, actually, that she was from further south.”
Daryl grunts in the background and heads for the door, barreling right past Jerry and Aaron back into the sunlight. Glenn gives them both an apologetic look but then follows him, determined not to let him have to go through this alone. Aaron trails him, Jerry just behind, as Glenn explains to them, “you said her last name is Greene.”
“Yeah, that’s what she told us.” Jerry is panting slightly, having to jog to keep up with Daryl’s pace.
“Wait.” Aaron is gesturing with his one good hand, as though he’s putting together pieces of a puzzle. “Wait — what was  — someone was named — one of you were —“
“Maggie,” Glenn says, from between clenched teeth as Daryl weaves between houses. There’s no way he can know where he’s going, but at this point Glenn thinks he’s just following his heart. “Maggie’s maiden name is Greene.”

neither “that’s not canon” nor “fuck canon we made this all up” but a secret third thing (canon shouldn’t be taken as gospel but is useful as a reference point for building upon and recontextualizing characters and details. if you worship the source material as unchangeable then fandom in general probably isn’t for you. if you have complete disdain for the source material you would probably enjoy yourself more in a different fandom)

WIP whenever
thank you for always tagging me @galadrieljones ! what an honor from one of my favorite authors <3
here's a bit from the VERY SOON TO COME next chapter of Small Miracles:
“You stupid cunts,” Burke hisses. “You really thought I wouldn’t find you? After the trail you left? Did you really think you were too smart for me? You’re CRM, Dixon! You should’ve known better than anyone!” “Let her go, Burke,” Beth says, forcing herself to keep her voice steady and calm. “We can work this out.” He barks out a cruel laugh. “Work it out? Work it out?!” He presses the knife tighter against Mae’s throat and it bites deeper into her skin. The blood grows just a little thicker and Mae whimpers from the pain, from the way he’s pressing his arm against her chest so hard that she’s gasping for a full inhale. “We can’t work out shit! This little bitch caused me all kinds of problems, and once I drag her stupid ass back to Woodbury, I’m gonna rape her fucking corpse and then string it up, just like I strung up her little dyke girlfriend!” “They won’t take you back at Woodbury,” Beth attempts to reason, the gun still aimed steady at his head. But she fears that if she even squeezes her finger just slightly, he’ll see and he’ll fire his own weapon, or he’ll move the knife too fast and in just the wrong direction and open up Mae’s throat. There are some things that even Beth’s can’t fix. “You’re a deserter. You went AWOL. They’re lookin’ for you just the same as they were lookin’ for me an’ her. They’ll court-martial you an’ lock you up.” He smirks. “You think I give a shit? It’ll be worth it, just to see the light leave her eyes and know I’m the one that took it.” Beth’s eyes meet Mae’s for a split-second, just long enough for them to silently communicate. Though Beth is not sure what exactly they’re silently communicating. All she knows is that Mae has something in mind, and she wants to tell her no, to be still and to comply and let her handle this, but she is too focused on her attempt at talking this madman down, or perhaps distracting him for however much time is needed. Where the hell is Gale, anyway? Maybe it’s better he’s not here. Beth is not sure she could handle losing both of them at the same time. “We can make a deal,” Beth lies, her voice cracking even as she uses all her strength to keep it steady. “I’ll come back with you. Take me to the CRM an’ they might let you off easy.”
idk who to even tag at this point. @mistressheroinee & @lemortehomme & @not-so-austen & anyone else who wants to participate!

I might just be extremely in my thirties now but I simply cannot take any sort of fandom discourse anymore. I barely could before but I am at maximum capacity. just… just watch the thing and enjoy it or whatever, be nice to each other, isn’t life hard enough

people telling you they reread your fic is the biggest compliment you could ever receive. there are thousands of stories out there begging to be found, to be explored, but your story meant so much to someone that they came back to it eagerly, they went over every word again. to love is to return and loving a fic is rereading it. thank you to all readers and rereaders <3333

thanks for the tag @thevikingwoman ❤️
I'm hoping to get the next chapter of afterglow out tomorrow. I still have some to get through but all the heavy lifting is done (it was very heavy, I'm sorry lol). In the meantime, a bit of levity:
It was noon, and they were lying there eating oatmeal out of paper cups when somebody rang the bell outside. The safe house was fixed up so that only one party could get in at a time. While occupied, the code had to be deactivated from the inside to trigger vacancy. But there was a bell, just in case paths crossed or somebody needed help. Beth and Daryl looked at each other and then Daryl got up to hit the intercom. He was wearing jeans and no shirt. He said, "Who's out there?"
"It's me," said a female voice.
"Who the fuck is me?"
"Your fairy godmother." It was Jadis. "Open up."

Chapter 21 // Part 13: The Car
Beth presses her foot on the gas pedal and drives out of the garage, watching in the rearview mirror as Yesenia and Elba wave goodbye. She feels tears pooling in her eyes and quickly blinks them back. It never ceases to amaze her how, in this new world, such strong and meaningful bonds can be formed in such short amounts of time. As she drives down the road and toward the gate, which is slowly sliding open, Mae leans out the passenger window and waves to Yesenia, Elba, and Guillermo. And then they are pulling out of the gate and onto the cracked street outside of Nuevo Atlanta.  The morning sun is slowly rising higher into the sky, casting a stark brightness across everything. Beth speeds through the streets until they reach the city limits and a sign that says they are leaving Atlanta. Even as she knows they are entering unknown territory and even more unknown dangers, she can’t help feeling as though a weight has been lifted from her shoulders: she has her weapons back, a car, and a refreshed store of supplies. Not to mention, she’s had two whole days of good food and real rest. She leaves both Grady and Nuevo Atlanta in the rearview mirror. The wind rushes in through the open windows, and as they reach the open, desolate freeway, Mae lets out a wild laugh. She turns to Beth with a grin that is slowly fading and turning to a frown of worry with every mile they put between themselves and the sight of the Atlanta skyline. “Beth.” “Yeah?” “Do you… do you think we’ll make it? Like, really make it?” Beth glances in the rearview mirror to catch Gale’s milky white eyes. They exchange a discreet smirk. “We already did.”
