hello, goodbye (for now)
🍾 💚 happy new year! 💙 🥂
here's to a great 2024 🖤 maybe we'll get the sequel and with it, more nile and booker to love and get excited over and obsess over, and all those great little moments to fixate on and theorize over and yell in the tags about 🖤

Panfandom Hanukkah Bingo
WHAT: A fanworks bingo celebrating Jewish (and Jew-ish) characters across any and all fandoms. Write fanfiction and/or create graphics (moodboards, edits, vids, whatever you like) to fill prompts on this overall bingo card. During the 8 nights of Hanukkah, submit your fills to the AO3 collection and/or post them on Tumblr to be reblogged and added to the Bingo Masterpost.
WHY: Jewish characters and Jewish fans are often overlooked or erased during the Winter Holiday Season in favor of “Secret Santa” exchanges, Christmas-themed fics, and the idea that ~Hanukkah is Jewish Christmas~ (which spoiler for all fics in this bingo: it’s not). This panfandom Bingo challenge is to celebrate Hanukkah on its own terms and give Jewish characters and fans a place to breathe. :)

Float (Book of Nile, The Old Guard) [3100 words]
Tumblr media
Summary: Nile finally boarded the ferry to the island of Ko Chang. She had two bags at her feet, obnoxiously reflective sunglasses covering half her face, and her hair wrapped up in a silk bandanna. She was ready to relax.
Except her mind refused.
The whole immortal but dead to the world while people hunt us thing apparently took longer than eight months, one week, and three days to process, who knew?
Read on Ao3

Written for @sindirimba's ask in a ficcing game on Tumbler that I can't find any more. It was going to be "did they/didn't they" also but BoN decided to answer the question in a very obvious manner.

Hmmm for the 5-sentence fic meme: Booker/Nile, strain
a bit more than five-sentences, oops!
-
The hall light has been broken for months now, and it's dark enough at this hour that even if he strained his eyes there's no way Booker would be able to make out the face of the woman standing in his loft. He doesn't need to. The shape of her silhouette, the way she holds herself against the night, is plenty.
"Nile," he murmurs, pushing the door shut behind him.
"Surprised?" she asks. He can't tell from her voice if she's smiling; he's not sure if he wants her to be.
"Something like that."
"Did the others—"
"I came alone," she interrupts. "You're still not off the hook."
"I didn't expect to be. I am glad to see you."
A soft breath of laughter. Finally, she moves into his space; heart tripping, he reaches into the darkness and she places her warm hand in his. They close the rest of the distance together.
-
Send me a ship/character and a one-word prompt, and I'll write you a ficlet!

Booker shivers as he finishes toweling off.
"Nile, have you seen my new hoodie?" he calls.
He'd thought he left it on the chair in their bedroom. It won't be any great suffering to go out into the living room and look for it in just sleep pants and a tshirt, but it's chilly, and he'd been looking forward to throwing it on immediately for maximum coziness. That's why Nile got it for him after all.
Gift-giving is yet another of her many talents. God does he love her.
He's slipping a tshirt over his head when Nile answers.
"Looking for this?"
He tugs the shirt down over his face and oh what a sight he finds: Nile, leaning against the door jamb with a sly little smile. Wearing his new "Not Today, Santa" hoodie and not a damn thing else.
"Hanukkah was over a few hours ago," she says, "but the spirit endures."
"Is that right?" he says, trying to sound smooth, but he knows he's staring. He knows she knows how she affects him.
"Did you have plans for the evening, or…"
If he did have anything in mind, it's vanished now. All he can see is her. Still standing in the doorway with those long, long legs of hers. Smirking at him like she's waiting to see what he'll do.
The shirt that he'd left hanging awkwardly around his neck, too distracted by Nile to remember to tug it the rest of the way down, might as well come right back off now. He deposits it on the chair where he imagines his new hoodie will soon join it.
It's still chilly, but it's more than worth taking his time stalking across the room for the way Nile watches him do it.
Nile's beautiful laugh turns into a moan as he scoops her up and carries her to their bed. "Keep me warm?" he murmurs.
Spoiler alert: she does.
~
with thanks to @sindirimba for telling me about a Not Today Santa tshirt she saw and for suggesting the last line

WIP Wednesday
No one tagged me; I don't care. I'm actually going to cut this bit, because it's not relevant overall and makes the pacing bad, but it seems a shame not to post it somewhere.
~~
Once Joe and Nicky were writing poetry and essentially dared him to join them. Nicky attempted to be helpful by quoting Solomon 4:5 at him for inspiration, which it was absolutely not, but he’d genuinely tried to express himself for a good forty minutes and then he scrawled a few lines and a doodle and threw his pencil away. When the ladies returned, Joe and Nicky recited their efforts and Booker merely handed Nile his folded piece of paper.
Her eyes widened as she read his words and her smile broadened before she pressed her hand to her mouth, blinking a little tearfully before flinging her arms around his head and telling him she loved him for the first time in front of other people. Only Andy wasn’t fooled, because she was watching him, not Nile. Nile was eventually convinced by the others to show them what he’d written, and got pencils thrown at them both.
Sell this as the best love poem. He’d added a little caricature of himself in a state of despair, flinging pieces of paper around. She pocketed it anyway and he knew she still had it somewhere.
“You make me want to write poetry,” he told her later, and she told him that was pretty good for a first attempt. He kept trying, on and off.
