OOOOOOOOO, interesting interesting

Pajama day for Class 1-A isn't anything unusual. After all, they see each other in the dorms wearing pajamas all the time. So, as per Mina's suggestion, they all show up to school in pajama day in hero-inspired pajamas.

Todoroki misunderstood the instructions and showed up to class wearing the Shoto pajamas that had come out earlier that summer. Kaminari showed up in Present Mic-inspired pajamas, even going as far as styling his hair similarly and poorly drawing on a mustache. Kirishima, naturally, showed up in Crimson Riot pajamas, giving everyone in class a Crimson Riot sticker. Where did he get them from (seeing as they're not official Crimson Riot merchandise)? Why does he have so many? How did they all fit in his pockets? Nobody knows. Shinso unknowingly matched with Kaminari in a way, showing up to class in Eraserhead-themed pajamas (a black turtleneck pajama and black sweatpants) and the dorm coffee kettle. When Katsuki walked into class, there was a collective sigh of defeat. Mina scolds him for not wearing a hero-inspired pajama, to which Katsuki responds with a "fuck off, Pinky." His pajama was one the class has seen every now and then: a black sleeveless tank top with striped pants, colored black, white, yellow, red, and blue. "Good morning everyone!" Everyone recognizes the voice instantly, heads snapping towards the door, wondering how far Izuku went with the-- The class collectively blinks twice. Izuku was wearing...Katsuki's pajama? "Deku-kun," Uraraka starts, breaking the silence. "Didn't you get the message in the group chat?" Izuku blinks twice, clearly confused. "Uh, yeah, I think so. It was about pajama day, right?" he asks, pulling out his phone. "Guys, I have a great idea. For pajama day tomorrow, how bout we all wear hero-inspired pajamas?" He glances up from his phone. "And then there's a bunch of people agreeing. Did I miss something?" Mina frowns. Izuku didn't miss anything in the group chat. "No, you didn't," Uraraka says. "I guess we're all just surprised that you didn't wear something that...stands out more." "Oh!" Izuku's eyes light up the way they usually do when he's about to talk about heroes. "This is official All Might merchandise, actually! It came out as a limited edition set last summer. There were only 25,000 of these sold in Japan. I almost wasn't able to get them!" Mina's eyes widen and snap towards Katsuki, whose face was glued to his phone, ears sporting a bright crimson flush. "Blasty! I didn't know you were such an All Might fanboy like Mido," she teases, wiggling her eyebrows when he makes eye contact with her. "You have it too, Kacchan?!" Izuku exclaims, rushing over towards him. "That's so cool, we're matching!" Katsuki doesn't meet Izuku's eyes for long. "Yeah, I guess," he mumbles out, fingers absently tapping at his desk. Before Izuku could say anything else, Aizawa walks into class and they all take their seats. Mina doesn't miss the way Katsuki's ears and neck remain a rosy hue for the rest of class, while Izuku keeps glancing over from the chalkboard to Katsuki's back, a soft, fond smile on his face.

When All Might shows up at the dorms to join the class for dinner (an almost weekly occurrence for the class), he asks to take pictures of everyone in their hero-inspired attire. Once he notices Izuku and Katsuki's unplanned coordination of outfits, he insists that they take a photo together (despite Izuku's flustered "there's no need!" and Katsuki's grumbles of "no fucking way" and "die"). Once All Might is about to leave, Izuku quietly approaches him and mumbles something to him. All Might smiles and nods, giving him a thumbs up. After All Might has started down the path to the faculty living quarters, he hears his name being called out. To his surprise, he finds Katsuki, whose hands are shoved deep into his pockets, shifting nervously back and forth. "How can I help you, young Bakugo?" he asks. After a moment of silence, Katsuki mumbles out his request. For a moment, it takes All Might by surprise, but he quickly flashes a grin and another thumbs up. "I'll be sure to have that sent to you tonight." Katsuki mutters out a "thank you" before hurrying back to the dorms. Ah, All Might muses. Young love.

That night, Izuku and Katsuki go to bed with new phone lockscreens, a warm fluttering filling both their chests as they drift off into sleep.

Today I'll be sharing more game shots and information about the Little Sister Residents' spring festival costumes, which I made for my Farming Town: Tropical Vacation series. As I would like to discuss the gender accessory differences in one post, I decided to use the Scott family for this purpose. Above, they are pictured in the following order: Tariq, then Linda, and finally, Chandell.

Just to get this out of the way, the Scotts are the only household with a true teen variation outfit. I say 'true teen' because I've been pretending that Ferdi and Pepper (shared last week) are teens when they're actually young adults. I also want to note, that like Sean's, Joel's, and Ashley's 'official' outfits (shared previously), Chandell's costume was limited. I could not find very many EA or cc pieces that fit the style I was going for (Seriously, if @venusprincess-ts3 is cool with someone age converting their tribal and historical stuff I would very, VERY much appreciate that). I concluded that her current outfit was the best I could produce, despite using it many times across games.

Alright, so let's get to the accessories.

As I mentioned in the first post featuring the costumes that make it into the main story, all of the women and girls have on cloth crowns* interwoven with fake pearls, regardless of how they've mixed and matched their garments, colors, and any additional accessories. Similarly, the men all have a fan comprised of bird feathers, regardless of what else they are wearing.

Some time ago I read that in many cultures, the women keep the traditions and history. I don't know how true that is, however I applied that concept to the crown. The pearls represent what the people could preserve of their culture and their past in the face of colonization. They are made of plastic, as oppose to being real pearls because only the natives saw the culture as valuable. The crown in itself also draws back to how the Little Sister residents survived 'The Last Battle' (and in truth attempted genocide) that resulted in Isla Paradiso's colonization. More details of this event will be shared in the story. Just as a hint, I will again note that the Little Sister residents did not have a hierarchal structure to their society.

The bird feather fan carried by the men is a reference to Isla Paradiso's 'official' history of the islands' colonization. According to Little Sister oral history, there were two attempts to conquer the people. The first by a group who also claimed descendance from a mythological bird of prey. These individuals were thwarted, or as it is told, their feathers were plucked. The second group, the descendants of the islands' current elites, are said to be the illegitimate children of the first. That is mixed born survivors, whose maternal ancestors had affairs with Little sister paternal ancestors. The feather fan is worn as a reminder of the battle that was lost, and the war won via inter breading. Although that last bit is recounted in stories, the current Little sister descendants do not believe that to be true. They believe the battle took place, that the first group lost, but they do not consider themselves relatives of the Central Island folks.

A personal note regarding accessory choices: When I was initially turning the notion of the festival around in my mind, and trying to come up with ways to use cc I hadn't before, the crown is one of the items I thought of. However, later, as I was just learning how to check polycounts, I discovered that those items were upwards of 20k. Thus I made two costume versions. One with the crowns, which were worn before the ending party at the ruins. Then a second costume without the crown. I was trying to pre-empt any potential crashes during the final event. It's also possible (can't recall off the top of my head) that I also made a second costume for the guys, without the fans. If that's the case, I either did that to kind of match the women, or because they were also high poly items.

So overall, I really liked the new outfits! I didn't really go into this with any specific expectations (other than wanting Shizuku and Mafuyu to grow taller bc they deserve it but w/e)

L/N - I kind of actually like the new uniformity they have, and the professionalism of their outfits. I read someone else say that it's a departure from the high school look, which I agree with. The subtle differences in their outfits are really interesting for me to look at, like the different skirts, accessories, the ties/ribbons (and if you've read my Saki kabedon fic, there may be something for you in November you'll like ;3), even the cut of the jackets and buttons are individualized or matching with someone. All things considered, these outfits really suit them! They definitely say that they're a cohesive unit, plus a bit of a hint towards genre and they seem easy to move around in while playing. I like Miku's new outfit, too, it looks so cozy but very stylish. I would want to cosplay it.

MMJ - While I am going to miss the old outfits in this case, I think their new outfits are very cute! The baby blue suits all of them well, though I have seen people's edits of using their individual colors instead of the blue, and that's also cute. I don't know a lot about J-pop (I mostly listen to K-pop), so I don't know if this is the kind of cohesiveness that groups tend to go for. I love their differences in their skirts, and honestly those outfits looks so cute and easy to dance in, which is probably more important than other factors. Miku's outfit seems really elaborate, and kind of reminds me of one of her cards? Can't remember which one and I'm typing this in class so I'm too lazy to look lol.

VBS - I LOVE their outfits!! The fact that An's looks like Nagi's outfits kills me inside, and I think it's really cool that Toya's torn shirt is kind of like VBS!Kaito's! (Not sure if I've seen anyone else mention that but it was just something I noticed lol) It's really cool that all of their outfits have the pink in them somewhere. Kohane's outfit is probably my favorite, and I definitely want to cosplay it sometime, she looks so cute and comfy! Again, these outfits seem easy to move in, especially for their style of music. It fits their vibe as a whole, and I definitely agree with Akito losing one of his sweatshirts (as funny as him having three was) is kinda symbolic when it comes to his trust with everyone else and being more himself, if that makes sense. An also looks more somber than her old energetic self, so I'm looking forward to seeing her in upcoming stories. I'm more iffy on Miku's, though it's still really cool, it just reminds me more of n25 and I prefer her old VBS outfit.

WxS - RUI TURN AROUND!! Jk lol. Their outfits are also more uniform, but in a way that makes me think of how far they've come as a group instead of striving towards individual goals, y'know? They're more in sync and on the same page. I don't really have many thoughts beyond that, but their outfits seem fitting to them and their personalities. I definitely like Miku's more than her original.

n25 - ngl I focused more on them than their outfits originally. Because look at all of them! They all look more sad than they did in their original picture! Ena especially, and Mafuyu still doesn't have any semblance of light in her eyes. Does it mean anything that she's facing away from everyone else? Who knows. Does it mean anything that she's the only one whose clothes are kind of torn/tattered? Probably imo but again I'm in class I don't have time to psychoanalyze her based on her outfit. The flower motifs are cool, Ena's reminds me of the cover of Charles. All of their outfits look really comfortable, and still fit their music's aesthetics. I would actually love to have Kanade's sweater dress, I love sweater dresses. Miku has two socks, two shoes, and now two TIED ribbons! I like this new design for her, looks towards some kind of growth, but overall their outfits make me worried for where their stories are headed. That could be a whole other post on its own, honestly.

but to be fair I 100% fuck with yoobin because if I listened to ikon, bigbang and winner and decided to join the company that made that kind of music and then they gave me fucking txt, nct dream and some other generic 4th gen boygroup garbage (sorry to those who like those types of songs I simply dislike them a whole lot) I would be PISSED off lmfao

especially cause in kpop if you audition for one of the big 3 you usually try to pick the one whose style matches you most, they played the boys hard I'm afraid, I feel so sorry

like the thing is they're genuinely talented from what I can see, and YG is no stranger to doing a soft concept here or there (ikon's first song was more lovey-dovey than anything but then they dropped that completely the rest of the discography up until love scenario) but doing all songs around that... like I don't doubt they were waiting for something more hip-hop based given that YG is home to the best kpop rappers in the industry, GD, T.O.P, B.I, Minho and Bobby that even won show me the money that famously hates idol rappers

I guess I'm just disappointed as well because although YG has many, many, many, flaws, something I always praised was how they stuck with a concept for their groups and they didn't follow trends, they always set their own. Only for them to follow trends the very next debut. Nice.

If you had to give a Muse to each of the Deukae AU writers that you know what would you give them and what would they do?

This is an interesting question and because they're not in Neon City it means they get to bypass a lot of the rules about getting one. It also means I have to go through my Spotify to see if there's a song or song title that I think fits their ability. But let us take it a step further and give each of them a Codename and instead of a Knight let's give them a Paladin. Now before I continue this is in no way a representation of how each of these authors are as people. Some of these Muses are just what I think would match their aesthetic, writing style, or just a cool idea. . This also introduces the idea of 'Verses' which don't exist in NCK continuity. But don't worry Deukae has its own unique gimmick.

Paladin: Roland King Song - An Epic and Heroism type muse gifted to Kingmaker by Calliope. King Song allows Kingmaker to bestow the strength and powers of any mythological king in the form of a spectral crown. Be it King Arthur, Beowulf to even Gilgamesh.

Heavy is the head that wears the crown - The longer someone wears the king song crown the heavier it becomes eventually crushing you under the weight of responsibility.

A king serves their people - The crown can only be used by someone with pure intentions or by someone whose ideals match the King that Kingmaker has chosen.

He's Shinjuku James Dean - This verse allows Subway to alter the memories of those under their muse. While this is temporary at best if the victim isn't a muse bearer they won't doubt their new memories for a moment.

She's in a city full of bigger lies - The true power of Dead End in Tokyo. Bigger lies allows subway to shunt a person or just their conscious into a new reality of subway's design. This could be used to cut off potential threats or to give someone the final moments they deserve. However, Bigger Lies can only be used on one person at a time.

Brief thoughts on c3e1 and the new folks........

Overall: Eh, it was okay. CR has a winning formula with their style of actual play, they're almost always a joy to watch onscreen and that was no different last night, but I came away feeling more like I was watching a oneshot or another ep of ExU rather than the new Critical Role campaign proper. Not super into the new cast and very disappointed that literally half the table is reused people we've seen before -- I enjoyed ExU's cast but that was sold as a separate thing and seeing them here is jarring, especially absent the rest of the Crown Keepers. Between reused characters, all the new permanent changes to the format, not even being 100% certain who in this cast is going to stay or later go at this point... It just kinda feels weird :/ But I'm excited for the Marquet setting and it took me a really long time to warm up to the c2 cast too, and it's early days yet. So I'm willing to have my mind changed, and fortunately for me, I'm more a fan of the cast themselves than any particular characters they've played anyhow. Taking a wait and see approach overall.

Imogen: She seems sweet, I love her character design, I'm very partial to purple hair lmao. Other than that I don't find her that interesting so far but Laura is a good RPer so she'll probably be fun to watch. Maybe she'll be able to join Orym in stewarding the group's brain cell lol.

Laudna: Marisha's doing an accent??????? She sounds amazing and I love the performance. Laudna certainly has a lot of intriguing stuff going on, I enjoy a character with mysteries to dig into. She doesn't inspire me fannishly but I'll look forward to finding out what her deal is. I'm ngl I'm super disappointed that all three of our girls this time are really femme though.

Ashton: Kintsugi earth genasi is an absolutely inspired concept that I hope Taliesin patted himself on the back for a lot because he Earned It. That said, aggressive punk with anger/authority issues is a trope I find super super annoying and he's already rubbing me the wrong way constantly :/ I hate that I'm just not into the only human-adjacent nonbinary character on the main cast, it really sucks. It's also driving me crazy how much the colors of his costume intensely do not match his green and purple and gold body even slightly lmao, it's really unpleasant to look at.

FCG: This is now an FCG hate blog, lol not really but holy shit I hate this character so much, Mr. Riegel I'm literally already tired of your joke character after less than 1 episode idk how I'm going to endure a whole campaign of them. Liam why would you do this to us 😩 a lot of people seem to love them a lot so lmao I'm anticipating for me this is going to be a Caduceus situation where my resentment of the character increases due to never being able to get away from posts about him. I don't want any more robots on my fantasy show, if I wanted robots I'd go watch an actual play of a sci-fi tabletop game instead...

Orym: Best boy from ExU returns, which is cool since I super wanted to know more about him in ExU, but wow does it suck they decided to actively make ExU a worse show by not going into half the cast's backgrounds and leaving it literally an incomplete story to accommodate bringing these cast members into c3. If that was the whole purpose of ExU why not just announce that instead of being coy like this??? The way ExU ended left a really bad taste in my mouth and honestly dampened my interest in seeing more of these characters. That said though, my love for Orym at least somewhat remains and Liam is usually the cast member whose character taste matches my own the most, I look forward to seeing where he takes Orym in the future. Also, if our speculation about his OOC origins during ExU turn out correct, cool to have the first gay male character on the main cast.

Dorian: Other best boy from ExU and a surprise appearance by Robbie! All three of the ExU folks I thought meshed with the CR style amazingly and it's fun to get to see him again. Very curious what dirt FCG apparently seems to have on him. And I wonder when we finally get to learn his real name... 👀

Fearne: I overall don't like Ashley's RP, which I know is ironic because I love Yasha so much lmao. But I feel like Fearne is, of everyone Ashley's played on stream, the character that seems to most match with her personal style and comes most naturally to her, it's fun to see her RP with such confidence. She's really good at invoking the fey vibe, both the sweetness and comedy and the undertone of menace. That said, Fearne's general behavior hammers my secondhand embarrassment squick absolutely like crazy lmao and it's going to be rough to have to watch that for an extended period, I find her frequently almost painful to watch tbh. I'm excited that a fey in the main cast means we'll be seeing Feywild stuff though!!! Maybe even my eladrin warlock's old patron Lady Elmenore 👀

Bertrand: Sorry man I didn't care about you in the oneshots and I still don't lmao, too obnoxious for me. It heavily seems like he's here as a guest though -- I just hope this doesn't herald something weird like Travis finishing his appearance and then bowing out of the cast, please bring a second character when you're done being an NPC Travis don't go away :(

7. Definitely Pretty

Hyogo is definitely a big change of pace and scenery from Tokyo, but a welcome one. The last time you were able to visit your aunt and cousin Kazuya was over winter break and it's nice to spend some time with them during the hot summer instead. You've spent your last few days here enjoying chilled tea in tall glasses dripping with condensation and hikes through the mountainous region with Akira and Akari's excited chatter filling the space previously occupied by the gentle sounds of nature. Though you suppose they're both a force of nature in their own way, as well.

Akari, specifically, has used her considerable talent at coercion to drag you and her two brothers to the summer festival today. Although she didn't need to expend much effort convincing you in particular.

Your aunt, their mother, had already painstakingly picked out and bought yukata for each of you, each piece a match for every one of your personal tastes and styles, knowing that at least you and Akari would appreciate the event all decked out. It's not something either of you have much of an opportunity for when you're both back in America.

She also helped you two style your hair and made sure you all took enough pictures to last a lifetime of memories, reminding all of you that someday these would be the moments you look back on with fond reminiscence.

Kazu and Akira have wandered off since you all arrived, saying something about food, so you and Akari decide to investigate the booths that hold various food and souvenirs themed to the event.

The two of you are at a stall studying the various masks displayed for purchase when a group of girls several years younger than you move into the recently emptied space to your right, giggling and whispering before turning to you both.

"Sorry to bother you! We just wanted to say we love both your yukata!" One of them confidently exclaims, jade eyes beaming with excitement and a little nervousness.

You turn to her with a pleased smile, "Thank you, you and your friends look beautiful, as well."

"Do you think? Thank you! My mom helped me pick mine out!" She indicates her pretty jade and white yukata with a lazy gesture, moving slightly closer to you as Akari starts off a conversation about her friend's hair.

You have to grin at her, wondering if this is considered chaotic neutral, a term your friends often seem to apply to you. "Yeah, definitely, I think it fits you perfectly. Really sets off your eyes."

"That's my best feature! Runs in the family actually." She states with a smirk. She's really too precious.

"Rika." A low voice startles you as the speaker comes up from just behind where you're standing.

You turn to meet a stunning copy of her eyes except for the completely uninterested look in them, this pair on an expressionless guy probably about your age. Wow. He's undeniably attractive and you're sure that unbothered but capable air just adds to the appeal. At least for you.

"Rin-onii!" While mostly still exuberant, she seems a little chastised by the single word from the guy that you're assuming is her older brother.

He doesn't say anything as he studies you back with that intensely perceptive gaze before turning away to address his sister, "You shouldn't have wandered off."

Her doe eyes and innocent smile are turned on full force, you guess growing up a younger sibling really teaches one how to do that well. It doesn't actually seem to work on him though as he narrows his eyes with an arch look, cutting her off before she can even try to sweet talk him, "I was forced to come to babysit you, so don't run off again."

She pouts for a small moment before perking back up to say, "But I made a new friend! And she's so pretty, right?"

You can't help the amused smirk that pulls at your lips while you wait for his response. Try and tell me I'm not, I dare you. Pausing for a moment while he stares at his sister, you catch him as, without moving his head, his piercing eyes slide back over to you again, looking sideways and down at you as if the last thing he wants to do is acknowledge you.

Then, instead of answering his sister's question, he finally addresses you directly to ask one of his own, "And who are you?"

You want to laugh at the pure arrogance of his question but instead you shrug and reply, "Right now, I'm just a pretty, new friend. Or should I assume you don't agree?"

This time you think you almost do see the lightest blush, yeah, you directly called out the way he dodged the question to throw the ball back in his court. I can slip audacious questions just as well, pretty boy.

His sister - Rika? - jumps back into the conversation a little cautiously, probably sensing the tension but not understanding why or where from it's originating. Me neither, girl, me neither. "Rin! Don't be so mean! We approached her and her friend first, you can't just demand an introduction!" and then turning away from her actual chastisement of her older brother, she beams up at you before continuing, "I'm Suna Rikona but you can call me Rika! This is my brother Rintaro. You can call him Rin or Rin-Rin."

"Shut it, Rika. That's not appropriate." He rolls his eyes and yes, he's actually blushing now. You wonder for a moment if you could push him further by using his first name to address him but you can't bring yourself to tease a complete stranger just yet. Not this one, at least, for some reason. Oh my god, your friends would be so proud.

"Nice to meet you Rika. You too, I guess...Suna." You follow her suggestion to call her by her nickname but also accommodate her brother after a teasing pause. "My name is L/n F/n. You can call me Y/n though."

You add the last bit with a smirk aimed at Suna whose eyes narrow again on you this time. Hm. Perceptive guy. Those are always interesting.

His eyes shift to your side just as you notice Akari pulling back to rejoin the three of you, along with the three other girls that came up with Rika. You introduce her to the two you're with and then have another round of introductions with Rika's friends, periodically catching Suna watching you every time you look back his way. He's making it really difficult for you to keep your composure.

"We were going to follow the booths down the street and then find a good spot to watch the fireworks." One of Rika's friends - Misa - explains.

Rika picks up from where she leaves off, throwing her pleading puppy dog look your way this time, "Would you please join us?"

While you and Akari have enough practice using that very same look with your own older siblings, you doubt either of you have had to field it and from someone so adorable too. You catch Akari's smothered smile before she meets your eyes and shrugs so you turn to look at Suna who just raises his chin along with a bored eyebrow, like he could care less but still somehow daring you to say something. What that thing is, you don't know him well enough to tell but okay then.

Looking back at Rika who's been giving her brother a frown at seeing his challenging look thrown your way, you laugh and agree, "I don't see why not. We did come here with two others but they've pretty much disappeared by now so I'll text to let them know and then we can go."

"Wait!" Akari cuts in as you pull your phone from the small pouch hanging from your wrist, "We still have to get our masks."

"We should all get one!" Rika declares but Rin lightly flicks the back of her head.

"Didn't you only bring enough for the food."

It's not actually even a question but he must be right because she turns back to him with the pleading look, "But Rin-onii, won't you-"

"No."

Completely deadpan versus completely affectionate, you really have to hold back the laughter at their cute exchange. She continues pleading but is cut off at every one of her sentences by Suna's monosyllable of choice. Eventually, your mirth is completely full and you can't take it anymore.

So as you put away your phone, you offer, "If you pick one for me, I'll get it with yours."

You swear, she and Suna both whip around to face you so fast that you get whiplash.

They speak over each other in the next instant but you can barely make out yet another firm, "No." from Suna over Rika's happy cry, "Really?! Y/n-chan, you're not just the prettiest, you're the best!"

You ignore both Suna's response and even Akari's outraged, "The prettiest?!" and turn back to the stall, Rika bouncing to your side in an instant. She picks out kitsune masks for everyone, a mix of half face and full face for her and her friends but half masks for you and Akari. You also whisper to her to pick out one her brother will like and after a delighted smile your way, points out the final one for your purchase.

Oh my, you can just imagine his eyes through the mask, something to be seen for sure, but you doubt he'll actually put it on. Turning back while Akari exclaims over the masks with Rika and her friends, the latter kindly assisting her with angling it just right on her head, you approach Suna, who's on his phone like he couldn't be bothered.

He looks up at your approach, face finally showing surprise when he sees you holding two masks and, before he can say anything, you extend one to him with, "Rika picked it out, but I think it really suits you too."

He opens his mouth as if to speak but closes it, eyeing the mask before reaching out and taking it gently from you with a quick, "Thanks."

You watch him carelessly arrange it on his head and when you look back to his eyes you realize he was watching you in return. You quickly move to place your own mask against the side of your head, you're sure you're blushing as a small amused smile tugs at his mouth before he gestures at you.

You don't know why and he must read your confusion because he elaborates, "Here." which is not much of an elaboration but it's accompanied by him moving up towards you and then you suddenly find yourself right in front of the bottom half of his face as he reaches up to your hair.

You don't know what you would have done given a cute but strange boy suddenly invading your space the way he just did, but you don't have a chance to find out as realization hits you when you feel the mask shift and settle again, realizing he just fixed its position on your head.

The two of you don't move for a minute as Suna looks down to study you, mask and all, and you hear him say, just for your ears, "Definitely pretty."

Yeah, anyone would blush so who can judge you for it, especially when you finally see his neutrality complete break with an amused grin. It's short and he even chuckles as he backs away, but it's fully wiped off as if it never happened by the time your cousin, Rika, and the rest of the girls swarm you exclaiming over our masks and asking about theirs.

After some reassurances that everyone's masks look incredible, Rika points out, "Rin-onii, I can't believe you actually wore it?!"

He raises an eyebrow with his uncaring, "Yeah? What of it?"

"Nothing.." She trails off as she studies him, then her eyes slide over to you for a moment before zeroing back on her brother, as a sly smile grows on her face. "I guess even you care what some people think, huh?"

He gives her a deadpan stare instead of an answer and she huffs before grabbing one of her friend's and Akari's wrists and starts dragging them to the next booth, other two friends automatically following behind, as she calls over her shoulder, "Whatever! We should get through the rest of these before we run out of time to find a good spot for the fireworks!"

And so, with another look at each other, you both follow in the wake of a natural force quite possibly as powerful as Akari. Which is how you end up spending your evening getting to know the quiet and compelling Suna Rintaro.

Soen - Lotus

I honestly did not expect another Soen album so soon after Lykaia, especially with the bar the band had set for themselves to live up to with that album. But hey, now Soen has just as many studio albums under their belt as the band they're so regularly compared with who just can't seem to get that fifth album finished. I'm still hoping and staying optimistic about finally getting that new Tool album this year; it honestly doesn't eat away at my soul the way at lot of die-hard Tool fans at least act like it does, but I'd still love to hear it after the decade of teasing. And even then, there's a part of me that just thinks about just how funny it would be if Soen managed to get their fifth album out first and surpass the size and length of Tool's studio album discography in half the time we've all been waiting for Tool to get their shit together.

But Tool and their artistic/logistic troubles are beside the point; this is about Soen's fourth album, Lotus. I feel like growing into my appreciation for this album took a lot of time but only a little distance to cover from the ground on which I started with it. I did not like this one at all at first, and I was so disappointed that it had me questioning what I even liked about Soen in the first place. While it's not too stylistically different from Lykaia, Lotus hits a lot of different high points in its appeal. As varied as Lykaia was, Lotus is able to match that diversity, but somehow without marching the excitement of its predecessor. The album's adventurousness takes mostly until the second half of the record to show up, and when it does it's still only minimally, which is part of what left me with such a bad first impression of the album. Before working out the finer details and hearing the album at simply and aesthetic level at first, the first half of it especially sounded so disappointingly recycled, but even with repeated listens, so much of Lotus is just average Soen. Of course, while further time spent with the album gave me a better picture of what was there and helped me fully appreciate it, I'm still left doubting that it was worth it. Lotus isn't any huge expansion upon Soen's established Tool-y/Opeth-y sound, and while it is another fine enough example of what the band are capable of doing with the smooth, proggy, classically metallic sound they work with, it really felt like it needed more adventurousness to make it a worthy follow-up to Lykaia.

The opening song, "Opponent", is a pretty standard cut for the band as far as the structure, melodies, and dynamic shifts used are concerned. It's a bit of a dry start to the album, but serves well enough as an atmosphere setter for the rest to follow. The next of those songs to follow, "Lascivious", ups the energy a bit with a tasty little bass groove making the most prominence in the verses and a more soaring vocal melody taking the choruses to those more transcendent heights that Soen do so well with. The song "Covenant" also features some groovy bass work and integration with the tom drum beats, as well as some very Maynard-esque whispered vocals to spice things up with an element of spookiness. I like the increased speed and instumental heaviness of the song "Martyrs" as well, though I wish it was more consistent with it and didn't fall so frequently back into the band's typical pacing and mellowness.

The title track is also a bit of a drag of a prog ballad; the restrictive vocal melody and minimal guitar flair do little for me, and the band later do much better with the more soulful ballad "River". The classic rock styling of the title track really only feels effective when the solo rolls around, and more of timesuck throughout the rest of the song's duration. The song "Penance" is also a bit of a predictable mellower cut, and one that feels so unnecessary and redundant by the time it arrives. "Rivers", though, is a much more soulful and ethereal ballad that pulls so much at the heartstrings in an overt way that Soen don't usually go for, and it actually works pretty magnificently and gets right to all my feelings of self-doubt, uncertainty about my future, and frustration with my life that are just being so wonderfully present right now. Anyway, the song "Rival" is good, heavier change of pace even if it is not the most unique moment on the album.

The closing song, "Lunacy", ups the prog quite a bit structurally, with a long, more ambient section lengthening the song to eight minutes, but it's really just another by-the-numbers Soen song after the several preceding it, just stretched out a little farther.

I wanted to like this album a lot more because I like the harder edge Soen can balance with the silky prog rock they play that ushers so many comparisons to Opeth (whose 70's prog rock fascinations this decade have been quite the frustrating and confusing root of some unnecessary, lackluster work), and in the end I'm disappointed that Soen played this album so safe, but even moreso that this album sounds so cloned. Yes, it has its few moments when the band try something new and off the beaten path, but most of Lotus is that beaten path, and it feels like a familiar trudge down that path more than an exciting revisiting of well-known sounds with which the group show their expertise. That said, even a meh Soen album is still enjoyable enough, but this one sounds like either a rushed project that didn't get the touching up of finer details it needed or a project without much artistic investment to begin with.

Harpies: General Info

Harpies are one of two races that are capable of transitioning their bodies based on the biomes (earth, sky and sea) that make up the globe; referred to as Shifting, their most used Forme is Terra--walking on two feet along the ground--as it is much easier to commune with other races in the literal common ground. Their natural and preferred Forme is Aria--able to fly above the sea and earth as a bird would; some variations allow harpies to swim or sprint in ways beyond their normal Terra ability would allow, and there is debate whether this is deserving of being called Aquia/Terra individually or if it calls to a sub-category of Aria, as they are still avian in nature.

Harpies trained in the art of combat have included an additional Forme that is unofficial, and sometimes seen as unnatural, that occurs predominantly in Terra-Aria Forme breeds by willfully overriding their instinctive transition and halting it at a mid point between the two Formes. This mixed state is considered functional if the warrior is able to "walk on air" while maintaining use of both arms and both legs; it is considered "perfect" if full wings are manifested without interfering with their humanoid bodies.

Unlike the avians they share features with, harpies have the same color palettes of a given species between both males and females, their sexual dimorphism displayed in the same way as a human (and thus most human-faced species), being that males often grow taller and broader with denser muscle and females trend smaller with curvier bodies and breasts, though these sizes are not a hard-and-fast rule, as heritage and avian breed also account for attributes.

Harpies are predominantly a pansexual race, opting more for emotional bonds rather than based on looks or genetic compatibility, though mixing outside of their race is still seen as awkward or frowned on in remote areas; the main kingdom is the second-most progressive area for inter-species existence. Despite this, harpies are generally an open minded group and welcoming of new ideas, even if not implemented immediately by their culture.

They do mate for life and have a ceremony for honoring this bond that has been modified to account for individuals that cannot fly for any given reason; the traditional flight is taken by the pair flying close together, enough that a poor move could result in mid-air collision, and at dangerously high altitudes while bound together by a braided cord. Once peak is reached, the pair willfully shift into Terra Forme and take a literal plunge; at this time, vows would be exchanged, and the pair must trust each other to spread wing and separate while unbinding a part of the cord keeping them together, symbolic of doing what must be done to save one's mate. By the end, the acts of trust and promises are sealed and the cords are kept to be used as benefits the pair.

Harpy culture is long and has roots in the old religion of Evenscerna, their most prominent legend revolving around their gifted skills and how they were acquired; their society lauds and revolves around Warrior culture, as the most common genetic skills are from this branch on their genealogical tree and combative skills are given preference over other labor. Most fledglings will learn some kind of fighting skill, especially if they possess the inherent hand-to-hand and/or weapon genetics sought by their military, but in recent years it has become less of a necessity and more of a basic 'finishing school' concept.

Given the nature of this fighting preference, it is not uncommon for harpies with training or active duty to gain scars or lose limbs, and whereas many cultures frown upon these sights, harpies praise them when acquired honorably, and can even deem them to be beautiful. A young Warrior is not considered a full adult until they receive their Title Mark through some action that carries weight to it and are given an insignia and name by the royal family; this is reflected by recruits and veterans comparing wounds and stories and those crippled in the line of duty treated with high respect by all members of the species.

Harpy genetics themselves are a curious thing, carried on both the X and Y chromosomes and able to coexist for some truly unique arsenals, as well as most common folk still carrying 'blank' genes. Legend tells of two brothers whose skills in combat rescued a beautiful maiden with the powers of a goddess that blessed them both, as well as their ancestors, with honor and skill to match their spirits. The elder brother received skills in Warrior talent (Within Magic) and the younger with Magical talent (Without Magic), and their children all received those skills as well, dominantly over their blank fellows' own genes.

Warrior genetics are classed as 'W' for inherent weapon skills that manifest as a natural affinity for a specific style or weapon type that aligns with their inner spirit; and 'w' for physical or hand-to-hand combat affinity following the same creed, as well as some kind of 'mod' to their bodies that enhances this skill (seen as feathers turning to steel or claws hyper-extending). Harpies born with both types are considered perfect Warriors if they reach their potential but being born with two of the same genes has shown no inherent boosts to either skill, it merely guarantees their offspring will gain that trait.

Less common are the Mage genes, classed 'M' for affinity pertaining to a certain elemental or stylistic principal--an example of this rare trait lies in Saleen 'Twister' WaterSpout whose affinity lies with the very air itself, allowing her to willfully manipulate the wind around her to her advantage, from isolated gales to razor sharp swings--and 'm' being the rarest trait shown as a natural healing and regeneration ability, as well as high levels of stamina; harpies with this unique trait appear to not take superficial damage and can fight much longer than most others. It is currently unknown if any contain both Mage genes and having a double gene, like in the Warriors, does not itself make one immortal nor allow for dual elements, it merely follows the same principal as Warrior heritage.

Along with these genes, it has been proven that without Mage genes, harpies cannot learn or use magic (-like) skills without external devices or tools and much practice. However, Warrior skills are not so beholden to these rules, and act more like catalysts to the skill and growth of the individual than a guarantee skill set. Examples return once again to Twister, who is on record with no Warrior genes whatsoever but is a high ranking fighter on her own hard work and training, as opposed to recruits that find their niche and focus on it only. Some consider the combat gene to be restrictive as it tends to make recruits focus on only one style and inhibits their variety; others hold some prejudice thinking affinity means they don't need to work on their skills to be great fighters and praise is handed to them.

Other legends revolving around these inherent skills persist to this day regarding the "ultimate Warrior/Mage power" gifted to their ancestors by the gods. The blood line of the brothers, supposedly that of the royal family, holds the duty of protecting the "spirit of the earth"--said to be a crystal of unknown origin that grants the wielder the skills of a Warrior regardless of their heritage, and can change shape to the ideal weapon for that user--and the "heart of the Phoenix"--which is an unclear source of pure magical energy that allows a harpy to perform feats beyond that of any elf or human spell caster.

Whispers tell of a remote clan that guards the Crystal that may in fact be true, which leads scholars to believe the Phoenix might also be true though no leads on it's form or location are known.

Due to the variety in harpy shift Formes, they have managed to populate numerous locations best suited to their breed and have a wide variety of appearances, not including their plumage. Skin tones have shown as much variety as a human, ranging from deep ebony to pale ivory and many tints in between, and many cultural varieties have spawn from these regional variances.

Part of their shared culture is the prevalent use of choker bands gifted at a young age that grows with the fledgling and carries details of their origins as well as their insignia if they're a titled warrior. This balances the regional mutation in their scaling patterns on their forearms and shins that are unique to each region and reveal their recent genetic heritage should their family be of mixed origin.
