Brief thoughts on c3e1 and the new folks........
Overall: Eh, it was okay. CR has a winning formula with their style of actual play, they're almost always a joy to watch onscreen and that was no different last night, but I came away feeling more like I was watching a oneshot or another ep of ExU rather than the new Critical Role campaign proper. Not super into the new cast and very disappointed that literally half the table is reused people we've seen before -- I enjoyed ExU's cast but that was sold as a separate thing and seeing them here is jarring, especially absent the rest of the Crown Keepers. Between reused characters, all the new permanent changes to the format, not even being 100% certain who in this cast is going to stay or later go at this point... It just kinda feels weird :/ But I'm excited for the Marquet setting and it took me a really long time to warm up to the c2 cast too, and it's early days yet. So I'm willing to have my mind changed, and fortunately for me, I'm more a fan of the cast themselves than any particular characters they've played anyhow. Taking a wait and see approach overall.
Imogen: She seems sweet, I love her character design, I'm very partial to purple hair lmao. Other than that I don't find her that interesting so far but Laura is a good RPer so she'll probably be fun to watch. Maybe she'll be able to join Orym in stewarding the group's brain cell lol.
Laudna: Marisha's doing an accent??????? She sounds amazing and I love the performance. Laudna certainly has a lot of intriguing stuff going on, I enjoy a character with mysteries to dig into. She doesn't inspire me fannishly but I'll look forward to finding out what her deal is. I'm ngl I'm super disappointed that all three of our girls this time are really femme though.
Ashton: Kintsugi earth genasi is an absolutely inspired concept that I hope Taliesin patted himself on the back for a lot because he Earned It. That said, aggressive punk with anger/authority issues is a trope I find super super annoying and he's already rubbing me the wrong way constantly :/ I hate that I'm just not into the only human-adjacent nonbinary character on the main cast, it really sucks. It's also driving me crazy how much the colors of his costume intensely do not match his green and purple and gold body even slightly lmao, it's really unpleasant to look at.
FCG: This is now an FCG hate blog, lol not really but holy shit I hate this character so much, Mr. Riegel I'm literally already tired of your joke character after less than 1 episode idk how I'm going to endure a whole campaign of them. Liam why would you do this to us 😩 a lot of people seem to love them a lot so lmao I'm anticipating for me this is going to be a Caduceus situation where my resentment of the character increases due to never being able to get away from posts about him. I don't want any more robots on my fantasy show, if I wanted robots I'd go watch an actual play of a sci-fi tabletop game instead...
Orym: Best boy from ExU returns, which is cool since I super wanted to know more about him in ExU, but wow does it suck they decided to actively make ExU a worse show by not going into half the cast's backgrounds and leaving it literally an incomplete story to accommodate bringing these cast members into c3. If that was the whole purpose of ExU why not just announce that instead of being coy like this??? The way ExU ended left a really bad taste in my mouth and honestly dampened my interest in seeing more of these characters. That said though, my love for Orym at least somewhat remains and Liam is usually the cast member whose character taste matches my own the most, I look forward to seeing where he takes Orym in the future. Also, if our speculation about his OOC origins during ExU turn out correct, cool to have the first gay male character on the main cast.
Dorian: Other best boy from ExU and a surprise appearance by Robbie! All three of the ExU folks I thought meshed with the CR style amazingly and it's fun to get to see him again. Very curious what dirt FCG apparently seems to have on him. And I wonder when we finally get to learn his real name... 👀
Fearne: I overall don't like Ashley's RP, which I know is ironic because I love Yasha so much lmao. But I feel like Fearne is, of everyone Ashley's played on stream, the character that seems to most match with her personal style and comes most naturally to her, it's fun to see her RP with such confidence. She's really good at invoking the fey vibe, both the sweetness and comedy and the undertone of menace. That said, Fearne's general behavior hammers my secondhand embarrassment squick absolutely like crazy lmao and it's going to be rough to have to watch that for an extended period, I find her frequently almost painful to watch tbh. I'm excited that a fey in the main cast means we'll be seeing Feywild stuff though!!! Maybe even my eladrin warlock's old patron Lady Elmenore 👀
Bertrand: Sorry man I didn't care about you in the oneshots and I still don't lmao, too obnoxious for me. It heavily seems like he's here as a guest though -- I just hope this doesn't herald something weird like Travis finishing his appearance and then bowing out of the cast, please bring a second character when you're done being an NPC Travis don't go away :(

In campaign 1, Laura and Liam both played half-elves, and Vax died. In campaign 2, Laura and Talesin both played tieflings, and Molly died.
Now Marisha and Laura are both playing humans.
But is it a question of how long Laudna will last, or is she already dead?

Okay. Okay, so I looked a bit more into Melanie de Rolo after the anonymous/honeyandwisteria question and thank you because I HAVE INTERESTING IDEAS AND THEORIES!!!
Spoilers for C3E01, Campaign 1 and maybe 2…. How about just general spoilers causes I’m taking theories and de rolo’s and character backstories and so on…
ANYWAY, ON WITH THE SHOW!
Okay so here is all that hear from Percy de Rolo about Melanie de Rolo:
“The gardens were originally constructed by Melanie de Rolo, who is actually one of more interesting de Rolos of the time. She was of the third generation to be born into this castle Melanie was actually fascinating. She was eventually removed from her position for accusations of witchcraft and raising of the undead. There's actually quite a bit of interesting ghost stories if that's your sort of… Oh yes, the strange materials that are mined in this part of the world have given rise to all sorts of stories due to its pale appearance, the fact that under certain types of moonlight it can glow with a strange phosphorescent supernatural glow. There are even tales of people seeing several of the more notorious de Rolos as spirits wandering about the halls, Melanie just being one of them. But she was very excited by the notion of a garden and actually, originally, many of these paths were-” Percy is cut off here
Critical Role Campaign 1, Episode 96 "Family Matters" 41:48 - 45:08
So, from this there are quite a few are interesting things including that fact that she was “removed from her position for accusations of witchcraft and raising of the undead” that would track with Laudna as she is a warlock and has a dead rat with a bird skull. Also apparently her warlock patron is The Undead which is an Unearthed Arcana subclass as she used Form of Dread which is its 1st-level feature (this is from her wiki but it also fits!) which would 100% fit with this whole theme of necromancy and “raising of the undead.”
On top of that according to Percy “interesting ghost stories” about Whitestone, including ones about her, “wandering about the halls” and very likely some of the garden paths- “she was very excited by the notion of a garden and actually, originally, many of these paths were” were spread, suggesting that she, whether it be her ghost, her undead being or just her spirt still lingers in Whitestone, whether just by stories or due to necromancy. Also, it would be a good idea to make a note on Laudna’s reactions to gardens, flowers(oh my god did Marisha just swap the flower interested from her old campaigns’ girlfriend???[yall are so gay])
Laudna’s appearance is very pale and almost death like, but what if it something helped that apart from necromancy? That comment about ghost stories partially originating due to the “strange materials that are mined” that in “certain types of moonlight it can glow with a strange phosphorescent supernatural glow” and had a “pale appearance” almost reminds me of her appearance. What she used some of that materials in her necromancy what is she used Whitestone or Whitestone dust which is makes more powerful enchantments and creates magical items “seventy-five percent faster”, according to its Wiki and the Tal'Dorei Campaign Setting pg. 49. Possibly Melanie used this in her experiments/enchantments/spells/ necromancy and so on as to not only sped up but and empower her witchcraft/necromancy. What if that also affect any spell/pact/ritual she did that may have made her undead and might have caused her not to be a ghost but brought back from the dead. And afterwards it sunk into her skin and added to that deathly look.
Also, when asked what type of place Whitestone is she replied with “a shitty one”, C3E01, possibly because they did not allow/accept her necromancy, possibly because she was tied there after her death or possibly, possibly it was because the Briarwoods.
Imagine maybe Melanie was a ghost or apparition or maybe even still alive in some form when the Briarwoods took over. Imagine that they found her and saw how she was still existed in some way and decided to continue her research on her. Or maybe they found her crypt/grave and knowing her history decided she was a perfect person to being back, whether as a dhampir or a Hollow One, of an undead in some form resurrected. She probably would be controlled by them to some extent, either through manipulation or control over her alive status, which might be why she made the pact with the Undead Patron she has. Breaking their bond/control over her and feeing Whitestone, that shitty place that caged her, only to be on the run and chased out of town continually due to her nature till she found a friend in Imogen and now they travel together, no long alone after how many years.
Or possible if the Briarwoods did have some control over Melanie in any way, they possibly did allow Anna Ripley to perform experiments on her regardless of her living/existing status. Maybe even testing the effects of Whitestone on a dead/undead/ghost person, possibly leading to her being alive in the way she is. Maybe Melanie was part of the experiments that the Briarwoods were doing with necromancy and Whitestone. Maybe Melanie woke up under their control or even alone after they had been killed and had to make her way out of Whitestone during the rebellion.
Also look at Marisha’s face in that moment when Tal starts talking about necromancy and Melanie, she looks interested, and I feel that 100% she knew that the Vesper connection could be made quickly but the Melanie not so fast. This would 100% be a move she would pull, and it would not be expected. Give us a more obvious thread that turn out to be even more terrifying and based in a seemingly small and random comment one should have to already be thinking of or be rewatching campaign 1 to place. Also just getting to use Tal’s throw away comment, maybe already cannon/lore or maybe something he made up on the spot against him once more. Also, more de Rolos always fun!
If anyone has any more ideas both for or against this please let me know!

C3E01 felt......... very spectacle-y. i know a significant portion of this has to do with myself preferring a grittier, quote-unquote realistic game (so happening to start with C2 worked out perfectly for me) and while i am still excited about the setting, i can’t help feeling a little lost on how loud the party at it’s current composition is. my interest was at its highest with ashton and FCG—who, while gimmicky also, did also have some grounding element to them, and at that point i was still expecting those to be the exceptions.
yes, i do also believe half of the cast is gonna switch characters and/or not stay, but it admittedly didn’t make my concerns exactly ease. between the surprise cast and the underlying feeling of this aren’t staying this way, i couldn’t help but notice that the entire thing felt more like a one-shot than the sort of a new campaign they’ll stay with for years.
maybe in a few eps, the new thing glimmer will have worn out and the characters will start to settle and feel like people. for now, i think i’m content watching commentary on the dash and not putting alarms at 4:30am for a chance of watching without spoilers.

didn't do this last week, so a summary of Thoughts from critical role c3 so far! (spoilers for episodes 1 and 2 under the cut)
so this is going to be a little less... chronological than usual, i'm gonna try and group it by character(s) though just to make it have some order
side note I have rewatched most of c3e01, so a lot of my character thoughts are things I picked up the second time, as the first time I was just going AAAAAH internally
it's very long and rambly I apologise but I gotta put these thoughts (emotions) somewhere
laudna and imogen:
okay right off the bat I love the dynamic of these two. a lot of us were wishing for characters who knew each other for a while for c3, and laudna and imogen fit that perfectly. the casual domesticity? the comfort around each other? it's all incredible i love them
laudna is. just. my heart. marisha ray has done it to me once again. her full body acting is incredible, i don't know how marisha is doing it but the creepiness seems both effortless and endearing. i'm so excited for this
side note one of the notes i made after episode 1 was "is the rat-bird a familiar? I hope we find out its name" and then we DID. Pate de Rolo!!! wtf! watching Tal's face during that whole exchange was incredible
anyway my heart for Laudna. seems like she is 1 probably a lot older than we thought, 2 maybe probably undead? 3 potentially a de rolo, 4 who the fuck knows I am so intrigued, 5 she made a rat friend to keep her company my heart
okay on to imogen! I have a lot fewer thoughts about her but again I'm super intrigued by how Laura is playing her, it's very interesting to see her playing a quieter character after Jester?
we've basically had it confirmed that she is trying to get into the starpoint conservatory to find out the origin of her power, and I like the parallel with early-campaign Fjord trying to get to soltryce for the same reason
anyway i am also super intrigued by the sorcerous origin. we haven't had a PC sorcerer in... a while, and I believe Gilmore was a runechild (?) so I wonder what Imogen's backstory is gonna be like
side note we know Orym, Laudna and Bertrand are from Tal'Dorei, where is Imogen from? Marquet? Wildemount? it would be cool to have some PCs from Wildemount. she has very intentionally Not Said.
anyway I love these two's dynamic. yes there is fic coming.
ashton and fresh cut grass
ashton is a gift I love them. every single damn one of Taliesin's characters is extremely queer in a distinct way and he has done it yet again
side note I am getting a bit of... Molly vibes? morals? from Ashton. specifically the putting back of three copper made me think of "only steal from grumpy people". I am not complaining! I've always been a bit sad that Taliesin didn't get to play Molly for very long, so I support this
but Ashton is also pretty distinct don't get me wrong. obsessed with the whole aesthetic, the 'fuck you' vibe, the OPAL BRAIN, all of it. thank you to all the artists the art is already incredible
I was NOT expecting Tal to play a barbarian! but this is some dunamancy shit for the subclass, isn't it? temporal stuff? gravity stuff? I need the details, please and thank you
I do like that Ashton is a local to Jrusar, I think it's a nice vibe. also the space they live in is great. I like that we're getting... more of the city than just the polished rich-people exterior
okay fresh cut grass! also a gift! I love them too! they're so precious!
literally every sentence he said in the first episode made me melt
after Veth and Scanlan, I think it's gonna be really interesting watching Sam play a very... black and white character? like, Reanni moral compass type vibes is what I'm getting from FCG's "I think we should always judge a book by its cover" "We should all be completely honest" statements
anyway I wanna know what subclass they are too! where are their clerical powers coming from! I have so many questions!
side note everyone calling them "Letters" is so cute. it's been two episodes and we have a nickname already let's go
the dynamic between Ashton and FCG is already so interesting. I wanna see how it'll go.
anyway just. robot cleric. yes.
orym, fearne, and dorian
less to say on these three because we KNOW THEM already ofc
so for these three, definitely going back and rewatching helped because the first time through I was just confused and short-circuiting and did. not really take anything in
anyway fearne is a gift, especially on a repeat watch her whole vibe is just. immaculate.
the fearne and laudna camaraderie we got in episode 2 was incredible. just hyping each other up. they're just great together I love it
fearne, stealing the earring: "don't get on my ass about it!" will forever be iconic
cannot wait for the rest of the party to meet Little Mister
ah, orym. I'd forgotten how much I loved him
I love listening to Liam describe things, which is why I was hoping for him to play a bard, but honestly he's excellent describing the fighter attacks too so this is great! Orym's just a gymnast here
the MOON TATTOOS. with call of the netherdeep coming out I anticipate some moon lore and I hope to god the moon tattoos come in at some point
also Orym has been extremely careful about giving out zero (0) information about himself. I see you over there. I am curious
who the fuck is The Anger that does not sound great
and Dorian! again, I'd forgotten how much I'd loved him!
okay okay the revelation that his family used Zone of Truth on him as a kid 1 broke my heart and 2 what sorta high up family does he come from? I am extremely curious
there was a throwaway line about him starting his travels in Marquet, but I am still holding on to my 'Dorian is from Xhorhas and/or is consecuted' theory
also I'm such a fan of Robbie's descriptions of the weapons-hidden-as-instruments
I hope we get to see some more spellcasting from Dorian! that would be cool
also forever amused by how terrified he seems to be of Laudna
these three in general have got a really good dynamic going on and it's nice to have that. little party feel already yknow?
sir bertrand bell
Travis Willingham sir what exactly are you doing
I have no thoughts only QUESTIONS. why is he here. why is he level five. is he actually the correct age or is he a changeling or some weird shit. how does Travis play someone so full of shit so incredibly well.
the whole having a drink while everyone else was fighting was a stellar choice, and Ashton then stabbing him was also stellar. also getting him to pay for everything was also great
also Orym going "I've heard of Vox Machina, I haven't heard of you," was brilliant too
anyway I have NO idea what Travis is playing at, I do expect Bertrand isn't sticking around long (but idk the mechanisms of that) but so far I am very curious, very intrigued, and enjoying the hell out of it. what is going to happen?!
side note does he just... not have a subclass??? what's that about?
general/setting notes:
y'all I know nothing about anything and it's great. with VM I went in knowing a lot about Tal'Dorei, I've gotten used to knowing lots about Wildemount bc of M9 and DMing in Wildemount. here I'm just like "oh a place? where is that? who is that? what's going on???"
it's great i love it
I have the urge to take notes while I'm watching tbh
also I love! love!!! the variety of races we are getting! pachydans! lion people! multiple genasi in the party! fuck yeah!
jrusar is giving me way more of a steampunk vibe (spires, cable cars, lifts, automatons...) than anything in C2 did, and it's great. it's everything I loved about Hupperdook, I hope it continues!
we have SO MANY C1 connections here! it's super interesting comparing it to how Matt started C2 with minimal C1 connections, but I think after the positive response to Allura it makes sense. will we get some C2 connections? can some of our PCs be from Wildemount? I would really love that
I was not expecting us to get Brumestone and Age of Arcanum tie-ins so soooooon but i think it makes sense post-Aeor! I am extremely fucking excited for this tbh
anyway it's so good! I am excited!
the new set is brilliant
and I cannot wait for the new intro I bet that's gonna be Something
