Imagining a whumpee who was caught in some sort of disaster (building collapse, fire, vehicle crash, etc.) and was non-fatally injured, but then exacerbated their injuries by working tirelessly to free other people from debris and get them to safety. Time-travel/fix it AUs with Cal Kestis as the main protag will always be funny to me, especially when authors pair him up with the Disaster Lineage (usually as Obi-Wan's new padawan since Ahsoka ended up apprenticing under Anakin).

Mostly because:

1) I will always fuck with AUs where Obi-Wan gets a new padawan, regardless of whoever said padawan is.

2) The sheer comedic and potential angst/anxiety of everyone trying to navigate having an actual tiny, baby Jedi on the battlefield with them.

3) Cal just mentally trying to process the whole time-travel thing on top of being a padawan to HIGH GENERAL, JEDI MASTER, COUNCIL MEMBER OBI-WAN FUCKING KENOBI!!!!!!!

4) The opportunity for Anakin to struggle with possible feelings of jealousy over Obi-Wan having a new padawan and maybe slowly coming to accept Cal as a Jedi sibling (with helpful, or not so helpful input from Ahsoka-lol).

5) Obi-Wan having to wrangle yet another droid loving padawan with very obvious mental and trust issues and OH GOD HE'S JUST AS TINY AS ANAKIN WAS AND HOW COULD THE COUNCIL HAVE EVER APPROVED THIS-

But, most of all, what I love about this particular AU is the additional, optional layer of Cal somehow knowing (usually through psychometry) that Anakin is Darth Vader and just having to struggle to interact with his new Master's former padawan without letting anyone else know, that he knows--

--which then leads to baby Cal Kestis meeting Anakin the Skywalker for the first time and just sort of blurting out something to the equivlaent of "... don't fucking talk to me" and then screaming internally when everyone inevitably reacts to Obi-Wan's new padawan clearly hating/not taking a liking to Anakin at all.

Obviously, Ahsoka would think this is hilarious, Anakin would take it super personally and Obi-Wan would just feel exasperated/delighted/resigned at the fact that he has yet another rude padawan to take care of.

Understand that when I kill a character, I have KILLED THEM. They are DEAD. With the singular exception of the supernatural/undead characters in my Slasher series, if someone dies they are finished. Kaput. Muertos.

I can not abide by the writing convention that comic-bookified media has made, where death is only an inconvenience. It betrays heroically self-sacrificial deaths by turning their ultimate sacrifice into a minor setback. It eliminates the ability to write stories about loss, grief, and moving on when the audience believes that the loss setting that plot into motion can be simply reversed.

There is no half-measured angst here. I do not make non-canon AUs for character deaths to occur consequence-free. I do not let magic forces return them to life. I do not let time travelers appear to prevent their deaths. I send them directly to the grave. I write weapons-grade angst. We don't do diet death here.

DEAR GODS. GUYS WHEN THEY CANNOT SHUT UP IN THE TAGS AND GET PERCEIVED ABOUT IT 😂😂😂😂

@legallycertifiedmcyttrash space au is a sci-fi scarian au that me and my friend @good-chimes (glossyblue on ao3) have been rotating at max speed and tossing at each other like a bouncy ball for like the past week now. The general premise i came up with is that Grian, the epitome of Just Some Guy (But There's Something Wrong With Him), has (what's on the surface) a meet-cute moment with alien!Scar while trying to find the owner of the very cute and mischievous catlike alien he's befriended while visiting Jupiter-based space station Hermetia.

A few things of note here:

It's been several years since the initial first contact; as there are no universal translators, negotiations on trade and treaties have been slow as each side attempts to learn multiple languages. This is new for EVERYONE, and diplomatic tensions are a bit fragile as a result.

The alien race (which we havent come up with a name for yet) is very felid-esque and has a variety of castes, some of which look a lot like uncanny-valley alien cats. Many of these specific caste-members are high-ranking leaders and diplomats.

The alien cat Grian is currently holding under his arm like a football while he searches for her owner is, in fact, one of these diplomats, and her name is Jellie. Scar is her (absolutely terrible) bodyguard.

Jellie knows just enough English to get by but can't really speak it. Scar knows absolutely zero English. They both, however, are basically fluent in Mandarin.

Grian doesn't speak Mandarin.

This results in a game of frantic pantomimes and charades on both ends until BigB, ambassador-in-training and the entire reason Grian is visiting this space station in the first place, gets called in to translate and smooth over the veritable disaster of a social faux pas that has just taken place. Jellie, who has some very specific ideas about diplomacy, and also thinks Grian fucking RULES, essentially says "yeah it's alright, he just has to join my retinue now." and suddenly Grian has a new job he can't refuse and it involves politics.

There's a lot more im not covering here, like some cultural context for Jellie and Scar's relationship, and the eventual plotline of Jellie's fellow high-ranking leader, Lizzie, having it out for her because of her ideas on diplomacy and trade relations-- and ofc the slowburn scarian that's happening because they've basically had to move in together, plus assorted cultural exchange hijinks-- but it's extremely funny, very heartfelt, and also involves fictional politics which is like catnip to me personally. And that is basically the cliff notes of space au, where we've barely even gotten into the worldbuilding for it but theres already so, so much material to work with WHEEEEEZE

Random Art Quirks or Minor Royal Details?

One thing that caught my eyes very quick when playing Dragalia, to put in brief, was Euden's. It's usually subtle, but in nearly every single piece of artwork involving him, he has a red fleck (usually) to the right side of each eye. Now, I might be inclined to dismiss that as some form of shading, but this reflects even in all his models:

But when I mean it's everywhere, I mean everywhere. Even in wyrmprints, who were made by a whole host of vastly different artists, preserve this quirk when he's close enough to the front to be able to slip in. Enough to make me think it's in his character notes or guide for artists.

...But he's not the only one with this trait in the royal family.

We've:

-Zethia

-Chelle

-And, perhaps most interestingly, Phares, as his are purple instead of red.

Nobody else has it. Leonidas' eyes are bright green enough and plenty intense as it is, Valyx's are a plain brown, Beren's are purple/pink completely, and Emile's are a bright blue. Nedrick technically fits in that he's got red and green, sure, but he's...odd in many ways, and his default eye color without all the bad Bahamut vibes seems to be like Leo's, bright green with absolutely no hint of red.

When I first looked all the royal fam after I noticed this trend (for me, Euden to Zethia to Phares), I thought, "hm, is this a sign of possession, a joke among the artists that this character is or will be possessed?" Especially because Morsayati does that 'whole eyes to red' thing, and when Zethia is possessed, where should be her red fleck turns to a green one. And maybe Phares' are purple to signify the Progenitor instead of Morsayati.

But Chelle bucks that trend entirely, escaping scot free from any such shenanigans. So what is it, for such a small trait to be so consistently portrayed in these 4's art?

First, I thought it simply might be a trait from King Dad (AKA Aurelius, in my set of nicknames I use to communicate to my best friend who never played dragalia...) But no, Aurelius does not have the red fleck, just a deep deep blue/teal.

So I looked even further back in the bloodline, and for that, I turn to King Dork, AKA Alberius, -who may be the originator of this whole quirk!

Voila! If it is a trait that's been passed down through him, I got to thinking even more. What if the colored fleck was a result of him sealing Morsayati in the blood, and perhaps a greater concentration of it or something similar was what manifests a red fleck in the eyes? Ah, but alas, this is immediately disproved by the fact it's in this model, too, before he sealed the demon.

However, that doesn't mean it might lack entirely for significance. Perhaps it's an occasional feature of dragonblood, since they seemed like they kinda wanted to make the family have a bit more 'draconic' traits sometimes or otherwise have physical effects dragonblood brings, like how rarely some of the royal fam seems to have rather pointed/pronounced canines compared to the typical style in dragalia, like Leonidas and Emile here (alas, most the family doesn't often show off a full toothy grin, leaving us with the more emotive ones when they're really mad), or concept art of Euden who seems (to me, at least) to have slightly pointed ears:

I'm not exactly sure where I'm going with this, but I think it'd be interesting to explore if the family had other traits because of their dragonblood! It's noted in like one place to give them some different veins, like literal new veins, not just the composition of blood in standard ones flowing, so I don't think it's entirely off the table. I myself kinda play a bit with this idea in my one dragalia fic, Scaling the Walls of a Mystery on AO3 because it's just so cool to me (Which I'm working very hard on getting an update ready soon!), but I'm always down for more speculation!

So yeah, red or purple flecks in the royal family's eyes is surprisingly common. Did you notice that when playing, and/or speculate as to a potential import? Or is it just artists adding a quirk for the sake of it?

oh yeah lmfao it caught fire

it wasn't like... foul play or anything. in my mind it was some sort of electrical failure or bizarre accident. like a lightning strike! actually wait i like that lightning strike idea bc then it could be Raining for this very dramatic scene and i do love me some rain juxtaposing fire <3

and Howdy would've been fine! he got all of his employees and customers out of the building, including himself. he handed them off to Barnaby & Wally, who had been swinging by for dinner with fantastic timing (the fire department was just then arriving). then, like an idiot, Howdy went right back inside the Very On Fire building!

bc, ok, he lives in his store. specifically, above it. the ground floor is the store, then there's a staircase going up to an apartment. and naturally, Howdy was not gonna abandon all of his / the store's legal documents (also his coupon stash) to burn.

so in his mind he was like "yeah ill just pop in, grab these very important files, and then get out. easy!". babe, you're giving Barnaby & Wally a heart attack. that's what you're doing. dumbass (affectionate)

but yeah he's in there, in the burning building, smoke everywhere. meanwhile outside firefighters (and Wally) have to physically hold Barnaby back from going in after Howdy, even though a few more firefighters already went in to find him. its all very dramatic! blah blah blah the front door becomes unusable, blah blah blah the apartment windows explode due to thermal stress & also bc i want them to, etc etc

long story short the firefighters get Howdy out through the back, and mostly unscathed at that! ofc smoke inhalation is a thing, he's got some minor cuts and burns, but it's really not that bad! lucky bastard! he gets taken to the hospital to get treated & make sure he's fine, and he is.

naturally he stays with Barnaby & Wally for a while. he doesn't have a say in the matter lol he was planning on getting a motel room or somethin, but Barnaby picked him up from the hospital, took him home, and went "alright the guest room is ready for you we can go shopping tomorrow for anything you need, you live here now". good thing Howdy rescued his coupons!

the fire damage to the building is, thankfully, mostly cosmetic. it takes a while to clean & fix it, but Howdy has great friends and a wonderful community to help out! everyone chips in, some fundraisers happen, Wally sells some Darling™️ Exclusives™️, etc. long story short they get the store back up & running, and with some new bells and whistles to go with it!

so for various reasons on certain planes the procedure is that both pilots put one hand on the thrust lever during takeoff, and this can be practical and safe for many reasons, but in some of the classic dramatic mayday/air crash investigation/air disaster reenactment scenes they don't explain this because it's not very relevant but they still have their actors act it out, so you get things like this bewildering little one second shot mid takeoff routine of a (clearly married!! scandalous!!) co-pilot suddenly reaching over to hold his captain's hand, and divorced from all context it's just very. what if we held hands in the cockpit 😳 (and we were both pilots)

haha just kidding. unless....

#ALSO though: what if we were both actors hired for mayday air disaster reenactment scenes #and the script told us to hold hands!!! frankly i think this needs to be a new fanfic trope #falling in love while doing the star trek shake as you're pretending to fall out of the sky. etc etc #*#to be clear. i would not joke about the deeply horrifying things the very real people behind these stories have gone through #but there's inherently something both gruesome and goofy about elaborately reenacting those things. especially on a show like this #there's a passenger actor in the same episode as this hand holding screenshot with a mustache that looks EXTREMELY glued on

Honestly, when it comes to jumpscares- I just hate the surprise of it. If it is genuinely good horror without jumpscares, the good existential shit- I'm all in.

But I hate jumpscares cause they're not even scary but they still get me. If I focus I can see a jumpscare coming and it won't get me- but preparing for it the entire time just isn't fun, is it?

Jumpscares are so cheap~ horror movies don't need jumpscares to be good i'd genuinely prefer a horror where the anxiety of the situation is what ends up fucking with me rather than some random LOUD NOISE and a scary man in a mask suddenly shows up on screen 😭😭😭
