ooooh aaah my first anonymous hate mail!
now i know i said i'd post this sort of stuff publicly to shame the sender, but i'm faaaaiiirly sure this is a kid. so! i'm not gonna post it, or engage, and have in fact already deleted it, because i really really suspect it's a kid.
i'll address one part: about me not tagging my work.
like many other things in the ask, that's an outright lie. i actually do my best to tag comprehensively and liberally, and if you're hatescrolling my blog you already know my tag for the shipaganza in particular is this: 🎀💖
i have put this tag (again, it's 🎀💖) on every post related to the shipaganza. even the explicitly non-romantic, platonic ones (like bandee's and kirby's) and the what the heck is that? ones (like marx's) so that people can liberally avoid it for any number of reasons. i'm just doing this event for fun, and want it to be fun for people viewing the work as well!
i also make it clear regularly that earnest folks can ask me to tag anything in particular and i will do so. however, i cannot control what tags are used on a post once it leaves my blog, so i recommend that you use this handy feature
Tumblr media
to make sure you never have to see any of my content ever again, no matter who else might reblog it onto your feed!
if that's not enough and you're still finding mentions of me on your timeline (such as when other people @ me), you can also apparently use "filtered post content" and just put my username in there. now i haven't tried that in particular, but it seems comprehensive as it searches the entire post for instances of a phrase. here are the instructions on how to do that.
anyway! i hope these steps successfully help you to never see my content or mentions of me ever again!

HII !! could you do dazai, chuuya and fyodor with a s/o that forgot pretty much everything from their past/forgets a lot in the present due to trauma? if possible male reader, and if not gn works aswell! thank you :))
a/n: felt this req hard LOL
warnings: memory loss, past trauma (not elaborated on)
(Dazai, Chuuya, Fyodor) With a S/O with Memory Loss From Trauma
Tumblr media
Dazai
i feel like dazai can relate in some ways because he too has immense trauma but instead of forgetting it, he remembers it too well
therefore in a way he's grateful that ur brain is blocking those memories so u don't have to remember the pain
dazai had noticed your forgetful behavior the second he met you, and had already categorized it as due to trauma in your past
honestly finds your forgetfulness adorable but it also enrages him bc someone hurt you enough to cause it
simply does not comment on any of this though. if you mention that you forgot something that happened literally yesterday he'll simply smile at you (is that a hint of sadness in his expression?) and reassure u that it's okay
will text u updates throughout the day to make sure u aren't forgetting anything
pictures pictures pictures!!!! literally photographs everything u guys do together so you can always look back to remember :)
but unbeknownst to you, dazai will secretly do some deep digging into your past to find out exactly what happened and who to get revenge on <3
^trust me when i say they will deeply regret everything they had ever done to you
Tumblr media
Chuuya
it's canon that chuuya can't remember what... the first 7 years of his life? so he totally understands
he won't question u at all abt the reasonings for your memory loss unless u wanted to talk abt it
does get worried abt your current forgetfulness though. with a job as strenuous as being in the mafia, having a good memory is important
^if any of the higher ups knew you weren't "sufficient enough" in that department, despite your other strengths, you would be disposed of
this added stress doesn't help you at all but chuuya does his best to keep you safe
^having a boyfriend who is also your executive is very useful in this aspect
leaves little notes and reminders on your desk so u won't forget anything important
hell, chuuya will even fill out reports for you if u were having trouble remembering the events that took place
i feel like he would also pay very close attention to everything u guys do together so, if you forgot, he would be able to tell you all about it
Tumblr media
Fyodor
another one who categorized your memory loss as due to trauma the second he met you
unlike the others tho, he will question u about it
if you’re honest with him & say that it’s due to traumatic events, he’ll ask if you want him to do anything about it for you (in other words, find and eliminate the ones who caused it 😊)
^if you say no to this, he’ll nod and agree with u but secretly hunt them down on his own
however if you lie to fyodor and say that you’re just forgetful (not due to trauma) he’ll frown & keep asking probing questions until he gets the truth out of u
has he heard of privacy? like damn
^its out of love tho. not saying it’s right but fyodor shows his care by learning as much abt u as possible. he needs to know everything, good or bad
finds your current forgetfulness adorable, albeit irritating at times (remember who we’re talking abt here)
if you forgot an event or important piece of information he will get slightly annoyed with you & might say some insensitive things 😬
^tho once he sees that he’s upset you, fyodor will usually sigh and apologize
recommends u keep a journal for reminders, however he also logs all events that u do alone or together so you won’t forget in the future

I feel like people who insist and celebrate too much that "their fanfics and AUs" are now "canonically accurate" because they played Sun as passive aggressive from the beginning, are starting to drive a wedge in the community with their comments, especially when These are important figures in the fandom.
I've already seen someone "famous" mention that "I used to consider Sun basic and boring for just being the eager good guy" and wow, that disappointed me a little. If anything, Moon falls into the same "basic" category by being just "the bad guy," canonically speaking. But they are not pleasant things to read, are they?
I personally think that if Sun hadn't seemed so anxious, vulnerable and partially open/friendly in the beginning, he wouldn't be so many people's comfort character today. Because I highly doubt that his attitude in HW2 would have made so many people feel comfortable, not to mention that it would have surely stung them in one or another possible trauma.
I've been trying so hard not to insult anyone because I believe that good communication comes from respect and good manners but some people are pissing me off. (Not you anon)
Listen, those people can go fuck themselves with their stupid comments and their entitled opinions.
I'm also a follower of canon acurated and I see no reason in mocking people who don't follow canon. It makes me so mad reading comments laughing at people whose interpretation has been contradicted by canon.
If they are taking pleasure from seeing how some in the community are reacting to HW2 with sadness (which is a VERY understandable reaction and should NOT be made fun of) they are not worth your attention, they aren't worth ANYONES attention. If it makes you feel better block them and move on because you will be happier this way.
And those who say "I tHOuGhT sUn WaS bAsIc AnD bOrInG" clearly they didn't see through the characters. You could say exactly the same about any of the other characters. You could say exactly the same about ANY CHARACTER EVER MADE.
People are so fast at taking one single trait of a character and make it their whole personality like it's the only and true thing about them and if you thing otherwise you're wrong. "Oh but we have this other behavior of him shown before, this may just be another aspect of their personality-" "nope, I don't see that, that doesn't exist, this is the truth about your comfort character, suck it" fucking bullshit.
Kellen makes a great job at interpreting Sun's character, if you stop to hear all the voice lines you can see a lot of aspects of him, just paying attention to his voice. Everyone jumped so fast to the "Sun is a sassy mean bitch" train forgetting that: he was originally in theater, he takes care of kids, he tries to be nice to kids, he probably gets criticized daily by parents and employees so there's no reason for him to be constantly nice to everyone, he is tired, like seriously, if you listen to his voice lines half of them sounds tired and trying to smile trough it but at the verge of exploding.
We don't even know how Sun and Moon are when they are alone.
I personally don't think the interactions in HW2 are canon events in the lore, it wouldn't make sense.
I'm so sorry that y'all are going through this. Don't let people's shitty comments get to you, ok? Go read your comfort fic or reblog that old piece of fanart that made you giggle and kick your feet the first time you saw it.
(EDIT: read the reblogs)

Important Announcement.
I am going to proceed with the intent of being kind, open, and honest. But all followers need to HEAR ME when I say this:
Both mods on this blog (Mod E and Mod Ocean) are over the age of 18. To be slightly more specific, we are between 20-30. But we are not minors, and it is up to you what you choose to do with this information.
Some minors in online spaces only feel safe interacting with other minors online. That is a very fair and understandable boundary that we would never intentionally cross. But the age regression community, nor the Hazbin Hotel fandom, have ever been ONLY for minors (especially not the Hazbin fandom...geez. the show is rated MA for a reason, y'all). There are people of all ages here, and it is your responsibility to curate your social media so that it is enjoyable for you.
E and Ocean have never been secretive nor deceptive about their ages. In fact, we've both mentioned aspects about our personal life (career, higher education, marriage, etc.) that make it obvious that we are not minors. If our age makes you uncomfortable interacting with us, we ask you to please block us and stop interacting with our blogs. We are completely comfortable with you putting up boundaries like this, and will not take it personally.
Going back to the "responsibility" component, I will gently remind everyone of this: When you are sending asks or messages, we cannot know your age (let alone any boundaries you may have) unless you straight up tell us. We will not know if we cross a line unless that line has been brought to our attention. No, mentioning something in your bio or in a pinned post is not sufficient when you're trying to share important information with others. It's not that we are refusing, we simply cannot abide by what we don't freaking know. I will reiterste that it is your responsibility to curate your social media so that it is enjoyable for you.
On one final note, I would like to point out something to all age regressors who are also minors: you will get older. You may still partake in age regression. That is okay. If you're 16 now, you won't feel all that different in 2 years at the age of 18. Regression may still be an important part of your life. Until then, you do NOT have to act with older age regressors online if you do not want to. But for the love of fuck, don't treat us like freaks or parriahs. You will be us someday. And yes, you're gonna be okay when that happens.

I love AO3 because it is the only place on the internet where you do not need to worry about your works, or other people's works that you love, being deleted. You also know you can comfortably talk about anything you want. And I can properly tag it so that those likely to be triggered can block it.
For example, on Tumblr, if I wanted to discuss something dark, serious, or of a taboo topic, like say, eating disorders or anything sexual, I used to be able to tag it so that people triggered by those topics don't see it.
Now? If I talk about my experience with eating disorders and attempt to encourage others to recover, all with an educational and honest mindset, if I tag it with any of the common tags to get it seen by those people, I risk my entire blog being deactivated.
I have literally had this happen before. That is how my last blog died.
Now, if I want to make sure I don't see those topics, I can't block the tags because the people talking about them aren't tagging them properly. They don't want to be deactivated, so when they talk about them, it's with no tags or the wrong tags.
The amount of triggering pr0/*na stuff I've seen on my dash lately is ridiculous despite the fact my blocked tags look like this:
Tumblr media
And so on.
Or think about an egregious example...wattpad. I don't want your shitty alpha mate erotic self insert bts fanfic. You know what I can do on AO3? Filter literally any of those terms out.
You know what I have to do on wattpad? Scroll past them all because they make up the majority of the top stories in some categories despite wattpad's terms of service. Sometimes, I will start reading a nice fantasy story only to get part way through the second chapter and MC is getting r*ped by a pack of "muscular, dominant werewolves." I would much rather the author mentioned there would be explicit heterosexual sex and rape. I would not read it then.
People also have boundaries in wildly different places. I'm okay with reading a story about lesbians involving consensual nonconsent, you know, bdsm style, where the rules have been worked out in advance and there's a safeword + signal. That's fine, it doesn't bother me at all even if I'm not particularly interested in it. But make it a man r*ping someone physically weaker (regardless of gender) nope! I'm out. Even if it's not for pleasure purposes and is a dark scene which is traumatic for the character and is important for whatever psychological themes of the work. Aspects like that can be included in writing legitimately, especially in works on the more psychological side. But I do not want to see those particular topics, so I filter them out. No problem.
My favorite fic author of all time writes a ton of disturbing stuff in the death note fandom, which, given the tone of canon, is a ripe canvas to work from. Half of the good psychological death note fics would be banned within the first couple of months, I'm sure. Even darker/more intense works like psycho-pass? It had a r*pe scene in the very first episode. It was definitely not meant to be gratifying to the viewer. It is meant to be horrifying. Any fics that deal with any of the topics canon deals with? Control, manipulation, gore and physical violences spanning the range which occurs in the real world and how you deal with them? How you deal with the people who commit them? There is a vast amount of ugliness canon portrays that is meant to make the viewer uncomfortable. If it makes you uncomfortable, good, you are a normal person. If you're not up for these topics, filter them out.
Those of us who want to see even the ugly sides of human experience discussed in writing can read them in deeply unsettled peace and you can read a different fic.
Banning these topics from being discussed entirely? You make the whole of literature, of what we are allowed to discuss publicly, more shallow. The depths are banned. You can't discuss anything about them. Not from the cathartic voice of an abuse survivor or the philosophical curiosity of someone who wishes to understand people, even bad people.
In short, it's dumb, and completely missing the point of an ARCHIVE.

Hiii! Gosh, I love your work SO MUCH. You recently mentioned in an answer to someone that you have ADHD and because of that, you have lots of rituals for your work in order to stay focused. May I ask what your routine is? I have struggled for years and years as a working artist to control or harness my adhd, and I would love to hear what works for you!! Thank you so much for even reading this :)))
Hi there!! Thank you so much. ♥
I'm probably a terrible person to give advice, because I absolutely do NOT have a handle on my ADHD. I often feel like I'm drowning in it, as I'm sure a lot of other people in the same situation can commiserate with. A lot of my issues are exacerbated by my agoraphobia and anxiety, but I won't go too into that stuff because I am not really in a place to talk about that aspect of my life so much. I do think I've become more aware of it as I have gotten older and am definitely better at managing it than I was when I was younger. Also to start off, I'm not medicated for it.
First and foremost, I tend to need to overstimulate myself in order to get down to painting, though this is only so effective. I play really loud, very noisy music when I work. Angelspit, Combichrist, The Gazette, etc. Heavy electronic, industrial, nu metal kind of stuff. It helps drown out my thoughts so I can focus on painting. I need to Not Think to be able to paint. I have to already know I'm in flow state on something and really into it if I'm going to be playing mellower stuff.
I also like to play youtube videos or shows on things I'm currently fixated on. Like I'll watch nothing but videos on Welsh folklore or horse training or whatever the hell. I really struggle with listening to audiobooks or podcasts because they aren't engaging enough.
I have parental controls on my computer set up so that I can block out any distracting websites, however this is really not super helpful because I have to keep social media open at all times as it's part of my job to manage those things. It does help some though. It might work for you! They make browser extensions for it.
I try to keep momentum on pieces. I can't let a piece sit for more than a few days, or I know it's time to bin it and give up. I either hyperfixate on a painting until it's done, or it's not good enough and it's going to be like an anchor dragging my momentum down. The second I feel momentum waning I know I need to make a change. I've made huge changes to how I take commissions in order to help me with this, as this is my biggest struggle. I hate sending updates on things, waiting for emails, painting things I'm not super invested in, etc. I recognize that I am incredibly blessed/lucky to be in a position to be a little pickier about the work I take on and how I take it. But I do firmly believe in general that a commission based artist should try to make sure they are doing work they enjoy and not just slogging away on something that they don't vibe with at all. That's good advice for anyone, but I do think that us folk with ADHD tend to feel burnout and artblock harder. I know when I have artblock literally NOTHING can get me to paint, so that's why momentum is so important.
I also try to recognize things that I know are going to trigger me into avoiding what I need to do for the day, or causing me to spiral. For example, if I know I need to make a phone call I try to do that first if at all possible, otherwise I am going to end up not getting anything done for the next 6 hours. If I know I'm going to have to have to leave the house for an appointment or something scheduled, I typically just let that day be a wash and don't plan any work for it. I end up physically ill when I have something I have to go out and do (like going to some appointment or even something small like going to pick something up off of FB marketplace) so I try to just Avoid That, but if I can't I will just clear my schedule for the day.
I try to maximize my Good Days by minimizing things that trigger my procrastination/lack of motivation/distractions. But when I have bad days I just try not to beat myself up about it. (Still do, but I'm trying to get better.)
The worst thing is letting a whole day be wasted sitting there, knowing the time is passing. Knowing that there is something you should be doing, but you're not doing it. Knowing that you don't want to be doing that thing, and that you'd rather be playing a game or painting something else. But not doing that either. And before you know it, the sun is setting and you've done no work AND had no fun and it's time for bed. Ugh, I've had so many days like that.
It's important to recognize when that is happening, and to just say "fuck it" and go do the fun thing you want to do instead of toiling for hours in indecision. That's probably bad advice for people who have poor responsibility skills (like actually making sure to get work done on the good days) but I am saying this in good faith. Sometimes when that happens I'll let myself go bake a bunch of bread or obsessively clean a cabinet out so I still feel like I did something that day. Next day, I try to do better.
I don't know if this is helpful at all- I know people with ADHD have a lot of different experiences/tendencies, but this is what helps me. I slipped a lot after my dad's cancer diagnosis several years ago and felt myself really just completely letting go into the ADHD time void because my thoughts and worries were so loud I couldn't drown them out with all the screamo in the world. I started fixating on BG3 really hard near the end, and it's absolutely responsible for me being Okay artistically and emotionally speaking after his passing last month. I think difficult situations can make our symptoms worse, and to an extent we have to ride the wave and be kind to ourselves.
That's perhaps my closing thought- be patient and kind to yourself. Our brains don't really work right but it can be a blessing in that I think the flow state we are capable of is really something otherwordly. So try to identify what helps trigger that in you and foster it.

Hi, sorry for the long ask. I wanted to say I love your work with OSP and the webcomic. Been a fan since like 2015 and even though I'm some random on the internet it's wonderful to see the channel grow and stay a chill and educational part of the internet. I find your channel and webcomic really inspiring.
Do you have a method/strategy/etc. for dealing with the constant barage of media/opinions? and how you stay true to yourself when there's so much stuff out there?
Like I find myself pulled in so many different directions and being told to change my art style and have to try very hard not fall into the trap of just making stuff so someone might see it, just to attempt beat an algorithm in a very saturated world.
Do you just block out that stuff or do have other methods? How do you decide what influences you let in (art or otherwise)?
Hoo, interesting question.
It's tough for sure, and it took me a while to get even halfway good at it. It's very easy to internalize "this is Good and this is Bad and if you aren't doing the Good thing you are a Cringe Failure" especially if you hear it a hundred times a day from every direction. Nobody wants to be a Cringe Failure, and in highly caustic environments like the internet, it's easy to be trained to suppress every aspect of yourself that could ever be targeted for ridicule.
I think ultimately the only real way to handle that onslaught of noise is to learn to listen for your own internal voice. It can be tough to hear, but it is there - otherwise all that noise wouldn't be so confusing and annoying. There's something in you that those opinions you're being bombarded with don't quite line up with. Someone says "oh lol that show is so bad", it only twinges because something inside you disagrees. Someone says "this art style is awful," it twinges because a part of you enjoys it. Someone says "this thing is the best," it twinges because you didn't enjoy it.
Excavating that inner core of Thoughts and Opinions is well worth the effort, because it'll help you process both what you actually like and dislike and what you actually want to create and how. It's not so much about blocking out competing opinions, because it can be very helpful to know what other people think about the stuff you enjoy and/or create - it's just about clearing out the internalized stress and fear and desire for conformity-induced acceptance that might be muffling your ability to hear what you actually think. It'll give you a compass for navigating to your own happiness.
Especially when it comes to creative art, making what you want to make is probably the most important thing you can prioritize. You're the only person in the world who wants to create that specific, exact thing in your head - and trying to create something someone else wants isn't bad, but it does suffer from the fact that that creative vision already has someone who could fulfill it. You don't need to make what they could make, or what you think they want you to make. You can just do your own thing, and the people who've wanted what only you could do without knowing to ask for it will love it.

your spirit guides want you to clean your energy field, cleaning your space and home will be the best option. through the energy clearing you can remove blocks, leaks, and entities or spirits that have attached to you for so long. this process also helps you to let yourself free from any emotions or stories that others have implanted with your inner self that is no longer serving you anymore.
furthermore, take time to notice what you smelling these days like for example are you having this feeling that sometimes there's smells really good even though there's nothing really in there and you are the only person in that specific room or on the hand, in a small circle of group you suddenly smell something very good like flowers and herbs and yet there's nothing near you those things ; it's looks like you are the only one who smelling it even you ask other person/people about it. this different scents make you feel and what memories you have in your mind that somehow haunting you subconsiously ; some are honestly smell good which indicates vivid and heartwarming memories, bad smells are indicates trauma and worst memories for you. (don't come at me this is my own interpretation lol :3)
for the rest of this pile, they want you to learn on how to handle money with care. it's understandable that money is come from your hardwork and effort but spending too much money for those things you won't even use is not only losing a money but also the opportunity to buy more important things you will need in the near future. they want you to make a practical planner about this issue because your financial health is matter and is an essential aspect of your overall wellness practice.

for the rest of this pile, i see that you will going to discover new routine where you can share and discuss with your family this routine can deepen the bond between you and your family especially siblings. if you are still in the phase of studying this months will be busy and exhausted for you but by the end of the month you will feel great by the results or there's unexpected gift that is waiting for you by the end of the month.

Ur so eloquent and i love ur posts about the societal pressures associated w makeup!!!! 💗💗💗 u put everything I feel & think about into coherent words and I so appreciate that! Also I would like to hear ur thoughts on plastic surgery bcuz I am also annoyed. If I see that smug smiley little dickhead plastic surgeon tiktoker on my FYP one more time saying “ohhh my patients r beautiful. Anyway here are all the procedures I’m gonna do to alter their ethnic nor unique features and make them look totally different” I’m gonna scream. The patronising pseudo-kindness is almost worse than when he goes completely mask-off about exploiting insecurity - like the vid he made laughing w the caption “when a 20yr old says she’s doesn’t need Botox bcuz she’s gonna age gracefully.” I’ve spent a lot of time cultivating a healthy self-esteem & generally not defining myself by my appearance - yet even I felt a flicker of my old insecurity seeing that post. I block every post referencing plastic surgery and I STILL get them. It’s incessant & so insidious - esp for poc. My 13yr old cousin (who watches lots of tiktok) told me she’s saving up for a nose job and a BBL when she turns 18 and my heart fkn broke. No 13yr old shld even KNOW the term BBL.
I feel so much for your younger sister, anon, because whatever else I may have gone through with my own insecurities at 13 (and they were profound and absolutely did a number on me), I genuinely cannot begin to imagine what it's like to cope with all of that in the age of TikTok and IG and the added pressure of beauty influencers magnifying everything.
Honestly, my thoughts on cosmetic surgery are very complicated--I don't think it's something that's ever going to go away, and to be honest I'm not even sure if it's about that. I know people who've had cosmetic procedures done and I know it was something deeply important for them and I know how much happier and at ease they felt afterwards--I'm not going to judge or begrudge anyone that happiness because the reality is, as much as it would be amazing if we all loved and celebrated ourselves and each other, everyone's individual constellation of insecurities and worries is completely different and not everyone will be able to address them in the same way.
To live in a world where we are not defined and punished for our physical differences would be an incredible thing, but we don't live in that kind of world--and so learning to be at peace with yourself in the midst of the world we do have, learning to accept your body or any individual aspects of your appearance is incredibly difficult--and these difficulties are influenced even more by gender, or race, or the culture in which you live etc., or even just the people around you. Do I wish my friends could see what I see? Of course. But I also don't know what they see, or how deeply that runs, or the impact that has on them. Because I also know that, when it comes to myself, I don't see what they see, either. I've said before that I find prominent noses absolutely beautiful--but I know that I cannot impose this on someone who has had to live their life under constant comments about their nose (or any other feature), to the point where they feel that is all they are to people. I don't condemn people for the choices they make in this, but I do condemn the structures and societal expectations that force some people into certain choices in the first place by normalising this idea that there is a "correct" way to look (and I'm not immune to it either--I have a lot of profound insecurities that are incredibly difficult to get past).
It's very similar to how I view makeup in some respects because whatever choices people make when it comes to cosmetic procedures should feel like choices to them. But not all cosmetic procedures are made equally and my real issue with cosmetic surgery (and in my mind I distinguish it from plastic surgery because they are not the same to me), more than anything else, is when it becomes a tool for upholding and celebrating particular beauty standards that are deeply gendered, politicized and racialised while claiming it is "just" a matter of aesthetics, which is deeply, deeply insidious to me. "Aesthetics" have never been neutral. Even the language we use in talking about it isn't neautral: "fix", "adjust", "improve" etc. Improve according to whom? Why do they decide this? At the end of the day, no matter what you say about the golden ratio there is nothing wholly objective about beauty because human beings are not static Ideals; you cannot distill beauty into a mathematic formula like a conch shell because beauty is not something separate from the thing it occupies. These ideals work for Plato, but we are living, breathing, moving, exsiting in the here and now. A static image of a beautiful woman in a Vogue covershoot is just that: an image. And all the rules that govern that image fall apart the moment the model moves again, the moment she becomes a person again.
And besides, nothing can be "just" aesthetics in a world with the warped beauty standards that we have. There's nothing neutral about nose jobs in a society marred with as much anti-black racism and antisemitism as ours. There's nothing neutral about BBLs in a society that fetishizes black women's (and other woc) bodies as ours. There's nothing neutral about buccal fat removal in a society so plagued by thinness as not just a physical but also a moral ideal. I read a horrifying article on GQ a few months back about men undergoing cosmetic surgery to widen their jawlines so they appear more "manly"--and a surgeon in the article casually said one of these patients also "needed a rhinoplasty" which made me see red: nobody needs their face smashed open for the sake of an arbitrary standard whose very purpose (Beauty) requires the existence, and therefore manipulation and condemnation, of its opposite in order to appear valid. These beauty standards only have value so long as their opposites have no value--but these "opposites" are not disembodied traits: they are real human features that belong to real breathing human beings who have to live surrounded with this rhetoric for their entire lives. There's nothing neutral to me about looking at a human face and dissecting all of its features, ascribing values to some, and disparaging others, as though they exist as separate building blocks you can rearrange at will. In some instances, it skirts too close phrenology for me, and I'm not saying that lightly.
These are some of my thoughts but as I said, my views on this are very complicated and I have to be careful how I talk about some of it because there are some things that genuinely make me deeply angry. Again, I don't believe the solution is to get rid of cosmetic surgery, because I don't think that will ever really work and I think it misses the point--most people will always have something about themselves they'll want to change or just wish was different and for some people more than others they will want to make that change: and I would much rather people have access to legal, qualified, accountable medical professionals when they do. But in cases like your sister, in cases like that GQ article, in cases like that TikTok surgeon (I have no words, anon, truly...), or really just TikTok in general, in cases like ethnic rhinoplasty and eyelid surgery, the fact that the number of people getting Botox has grown since the increase in video calls and Zoom meetings....in all honesty at this point I am just tired and infuriated by our refusal to have an actual conversation about the society these procedures exist in and are normalised within and I'm especially tired when influencers and celebrities make a point of not being upfront about their own procedures. I don't care what people get done or why (as long as its a freely made choice for no one else's sake but yours), but I do care when we make it as acessible as these procedures are now, when they are tacitly (and in some cases outright) encouraged, and yet talking about them or admitting to having had that work done is somehow gauche and I am incredibly tired of it!

Games I Played In 2023 And Whether Or Not I Thought They Were Good (Part 1/4)
Once again, a year has passed, and I spent a considerable chunk of it on video games! Here's what I thought about [e: some of] the ones that I played.
1 - [2] - [3] - [4]
Potionomics
Tumblr media
This game is- well, I've never played a Recettear game, but apparently it's a Recettear knockoff? You run a potion shop, and you hire adventurers to go into dungeons to get ingredients for your potion shop, and the whole thing's on a timer where you have to pay off a big debt by the end... apparently there's a formula it's aping that I'm unfamiliar with.
But it's very fun- it's got two main unique mechanics, one of which is a potion-brewing minigame about balancing ingredients in certain ratios which is challenging- and the other of which is an STS-style deckbuilder card game where you haggle with customers in lieu of combat. Both systems have a lot of depth and interesting options and I enjoyed them a lot.
Other standouts: the cast of support characters you can rank up social links with are great (love love love the coffee-addled workaholic moth girl and the comic relief cat pirates with a surprisingly dark backstory), and the fully-animated 3D character portraits are really fun and expressive.
Nitpicks: the time system having one time block reserved for the hour it takes to go home after visiting town is... an awkward choice (holdover from the Recettear structure they're aping?), and lategame you kind of cap out in potion-making capacity and it becomes kind of tricky to progress. Also the story's kinda predictable and the villains who don't later become party members are paper-thin.
Horizon: Forbidden West
Tumblr media
God this game pisses me off.
Horizon: Zero Dawn, its predecessor, was a fun open-world game about hunting robot dinosaurs and uncovering the surprisingly elaborate story behind why there are robot dinosaurs. I enjoyed it a lot!
Forbidden West has everything Zero Dawn had... and also mountains of tedious cruft to pad out the game's runtime which all infuriates me to no end.
The story is still quite good! And the robot dinosaur fighting is still quite good! Those are the important parts, and they nailed them... but I have complained at my friends for hours about the bafflingly bad design choices that plague every other aspect of this game constantly. It's... there's so much, I want to like, make a video going into the details, but in short...
The cool and versatile weapons from the last game have been split up into piles of slightly-different weapons with different elements so you have to carry around and upgrade ten times as much crap and are forced to spec into a build that locks you out of effective experimentation
Every little noncombat action in the game has some very realistic and pretty AAA graphics animation that takes too long and wastes your time constantly during basic gameplay and kills flow dead
The very cool procedural climbing mesh thing... gets arbitrarily turned off in inexplicably oiled-up puzzle ruins that very badly want you to push a crate around in every way it's possible to push a crate around in order to waste the maximum amount of your time
Cooking "system" which is the most comprehensively useless thing anyone probably spent dozens of hours implementing in their video game
Item wheel that contains every consumable item in the game regardless of whether you currently have any and is basically unnavigable during tense situations like, say, combat, when you need it
So many repetitive sidequests about some poor fucker who went missing and might be in danger and is every single time dead to a bunch of robot dinosaurs obviously. Lot of missions designed to kill time rather than show you something cool or have interesting story.
There's a lot to like and it's super cool but god there's so much to be mad at. Respects the player's time 0%. I'm gonna go off about this more later for sure.
Disco Elysium
Tumblr media
Oh my god, this game. It's... really something. You might be familiar with it from memes on Tumblr, about its comically inept slash deranged protagonist and his partner with the patience of a saint- but it's doing so much more than I expected from the out-of-context screencaps.
Like- yes, it's fucking hilarious. I love that about it. But it's also this incredibly detailed work of worldbuilding that creates this whole setting that's doing... some wild stuff. Like, you've maybe heard it's very political? Well, it is, but about weird alternate universe sci-fi politics that sort of halfway resemble our own, and it's thought through all of these invented social dynamics. And it's got a great sense of atmosphere- it knows when to be funny and when to be solemn and how to blend the two for maximum effect. It's a dark comedy, but it's all built on a dead-serious reality and a really effective story.
And- it is a murder mystery game about solving cases! It works very well on that level! It manages to be open-ended and let you solve things in a variety of different ways using this complex RPG stat system of creatively-designed psychological stats, while making sure the central whodunit (and a bevy of fascinating satellite mysteries) stays on track. Extremely good on a game design level.
(also some shit happens in this game that i was not at all expecting and can't even go into without spoilers, but- but holy fuck, the way this game opens up and the things it manages to hide in plain sight... just mind-boggling. incredibly impressive.)
Tunic
Tumblr media
Speaking of hiding things in plain sight- neither this nor Disco Elysium came out this year, so I can't call either of them GotY, but... if they had, I'd have a hard time deciding.
Tunic is incredibly clever. On the surface, it's an isometric soulslike thing with a low-poly Zelda-y aesthetic... but there's not just the surface. There's layers and layers to this thing. The first layer it hits you with is that most of the game's UI is in a made-up rune script, which you have to learn, which is a fun challenge and caused me to spend a few hours making a tool to catalogue and decrypt the damn thing- though I eventually learned to sight-read it. But that's just- that's like, the tip of the iceberg, the most obvious twist to what this game is.
There's, like... I don't want to spoil what there's like. The whole thing is about peeling back the layers and figuring out which seemingly arbitrary aesthetic choices were secretly meaningful, and seeing how the game transforms as you figure out the different sorts of secret structure layered on top of each other. It's actually best compared to The Witness, although there's still a pretty meaty and challenging action-adventure game to tackle while you're uncovering the hidden patterns and deepest lore. It's a fascinating intellectual challenge and highly recommended to anyone who likes giving their noggin something to chew on.
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom
Tumblr media
Man, so... this game is very impressive, but it's in a weird place due to some awkward design decisions and cut corners.
This is a direct sequel to smash megahit Breath of the Wild... sort of. It's very weird what it's doing. It really wants to be a self-contained thing, to the point of throwing out major setting elements and story concepts from BotW entirely so it can do its own thing... but on a mechanical level, this is the same game, with some very cool new mechanics and a cool-ish new story bolted on.
(Said story... it has one extremely cool plot twist that's also a gameplay twist, delivered effectively in a nonlinear way that creates this great sense of dawning comprehension. Otherwise... kind of a nothingburger. Ganondorf is boring and has no coherent motivation, there's no explanation or real plot relevance to the [spoilers] that seem like such a central thing, and... the whole thing revolves around a technologically advanced precursor civilization that's completely different from the technologically advanced precursor civilization established by the last game, of which all evidence has been meticulously scrubbed from the world to... I guess avoid confusion? The one huge central plot beat really works, and the rest is... low-effort nonsense.)
So, mechanically... the developers made this very odd choice to... have the game take place in the exact same map from the first game, except warped and remixed by geologic upheaval just enough to force the environment designers to redo every bit of landscape more or less from scratch. Like, all the same recognizable locations, but a step to the left. In theory, not a bad idea- but then they layer on top of that a threefold expansion to the world.
TotK has three world maps- Hyrule, the sky (full of floating islands now), and a third spoilery area that's the same size as both of those. The game's economy is thus weirdly trifurcated- crucial resources are located in all three areas, so you need to go up and down and up and down a lot. And so is the game's content- there's a roughly comparable amount of stuff in BotW and TotK, but TotK splits it across three maps, making each area feel largely empty, with a lot of wasted space.
This effect is especially noticeable in Hyrule, which... if you've played BotW, you won't really find anything new there. It's all the same places with a few tweaks, so there's not much sense of discovery if you played the original. There's a bunch of landmarks and areas that exist purely because they were there before and it'd be weird for them to disappear... except now instead of some secret or loot there, there's just nothing. Wasted space. And both the sky and the other new map are pretty homogeneous and unrewarding to explore once you've seen the four or five types of things they have to offer- they're mainly made up of recycled assets.
TotK is... I think strictly better than BotW, with more content and more fun core mechanics, but it's a worse experience than BotW if you played the first one. If you haven't played BotW, Hyrule will still be fun to explore, and you probably want to jump straight to TotK.
-
I'm... gonna have to break this post up to get to the 21 other games I played this year, otherwise it's gonna be stupid long and take forever. Stay tuned!

Hi! Your secret Santa event is so cute and original I'm dying to submit for it hehe! I'm a Sebek simp so can I request him? I imagine the gift giving would take place at the Diasomnia dorm, since nowhere else is worthy of Sebek’s time lol.
For a gift, I’d like to give him a collection of King Arthur's legends, especially the ones about knights and bravery!
Personality wise, I’m a very reserved person and I tend to be very polite but distant to people around me, unless they irritate or anger me, then I get a bit snarky and tend to judge them in my mind. When I’m comfortable, I tend to do and say anything to make others laugh, while also talking about my passions, like anatomy and fashion design. I enjoy giving gifts and spending money on others, and I hate being touched or looked down on. I also like people who are honest and willing to do things the hard way.
Thanks in advance, and have a wonderful day!!
I gotchu! ✨️ Man, this is my first time writing for Sebek, ngl I'm kinda nervous 😅 Also I'm glad that you like this event!!
Christmas Secret Santa Event
nb!reader x Sebek Zigvolt
: ̗̀➛ Scenario: You're helping put gifts under the Christmas tree in Diasomnia's lounge with Sebek.
A/N: Since reader isn't Yuu and is from Twisted Wonderland, I couldn't really see there being a storybook about King Arthur, so I improvised there but kept the original aspect of it. I hope you don't mind!

"What did you need my help with, Sebek?" You asked as you walked into the room. Sebek had a huge armful of wrapped presents in his arms that he began placing under the tree. He looked up when you spoke.
"Ah, human, there you are!" He said, smiling. He still used the term 'human' despite you being in a relationship, though it's more of an endearment to you rather than his normal disdainful one he used for others. "I request your assistance in placing presents under the Christmas tree!" He said, gesturing to the presents.
"Oh, alright. Aren't you usually with Malleus though? Why not have other students help?" You asked curiously, taking some presents from him and putting them under the tree. "W- Well, Malleus-sama requested that I do this as it's a very important job! And who am I to say no to such a task? I would be a fool to turn down such an honorable job." He replied, quickly turning away. He handed you another present.
"Sebek, is something wrong?" You asked, noticing his odd behavior. He turned back to you as you went to place the present under the tree with the others. "Eh— no, don't put that one there, human!" He blocked you. You looked at him with confusion. He finally spoke up. "That one's for you."
You looked down at the package and it indeed was for you, from Sebek. "I'd like for you to open it now." He mentioned, his face flushed but he still had a serious expression on his face. You almost laughed seeing it as it was clear that he was embarrassed. You opened the package to see a book with a swordsman on the cover.
"It's a book about sword movements and stances." He said, clearly proud of his gift. "Oh yes, there are also detailed pictures of outfits worn by famous swordsmen from Briar Valley, as well as descriptions of hand movements and stances. I thought that while you learned about weilding a sword, you might also enjoy the clothing and movements aspects of it as well." He added, noticing your odd look. With that cleared up, you grew noticeably happier as you realized that Sebek had indeed kept your interests in mind while getting you a gift.
"That's so sweet of you, Sebek!" You said. "But why didn't you wait to give it to me tomorrow for Christmas?" He got a bashful look on his face. "I... had intended to. But Lilia-sama suggested it. He said it'd be more romantic."
You almost laughed out loud as you realized that Lilia hadn't actually been serious and had been teasing Sebek, who had taken it completely seriously. You spotted the present that you'd planned to give to Sebek amongst the ones under the tree. You picked it up and handed it him, your face just as flushed as his had been. He looked confused.
"Since you gave me my gift early, it's only fair that I give you yours now as well." You explained. He looked surprised but nodded. He carefully opened the wrapping paper to reveal your gift to him. It was a book that contained a storybook about famous warriors from all over Twisted Wonderland and talked about their bravery and chivalry.
When Sebek realized what it was, he literally got tears in his eyes. "Thank you, Y/N!I shall treasure this book forever! It will be passed down for generations as—" You interrupted him with a laugh. "It's just a book, Sebek, not need to be dramatic!" In truth, you were very embarrassed by his words. Though Sebek wasn't having it. "It's a present from you, it should be celebrated!"
You gave up trying to lower the dramatics and accepted him fawning over the book for a few more minutes before reminding him that you still had work to do.
. . .
After you finished organizing the presents under the tree, you went to Malleus to see if there was anything else you could help with. You found him using magic to pin Christmas lights along the corridors.
"Hm? Well, I was going to go place the presents under the tree, so I suppose you may assist by going to check on the progress of the food in the kitchen. Silver should be overseeing that with Sebek, I believe." He responded, both of you knowing what would have happened had Lilia been allowed in the kitchen. Instead, the short fae had been sent to chop down more trees to decorate the halls.
"Oh, me and Sebek already did that." You said. Malleus looked surprised but nodded. "Well then, I suppose I can go check up on Lilia once I'm done with these lights. You'll go check up on things in the kitchen?" He asked.
"Yeah." You said, walking down the corridor to the kitchen. It only occurred to you after you left that apparently Malleus hadn't told Sebek to deal with the presents.
I'm doneeeeee 😍 It was super interesting trying to decide how Sebek would react to things because like I said, I haven't written for him before. I hope I did alright! This was actually pretty fun despite of that though! I hope everyone enjoyed! 💚

So let me explain what is haeppening in the Namor x reader writerher on tumblr ( I can't beleive I'm writing this)
In my previous post I said a bunch of things about some aspects of Namor x reader writers and fanfictions, the one that is under the spotlight at the moment is a writer that posted a description that is quite problematic
They (I don't know their pronouns) wrote a description about an incoming (no more) fanfiction Namor x lolita!reader or a coquette aesthetic reader. For the people who don't know Lolita is the title of Vladmir Nabokov book about a grown man having an inapropriate reletionship with a minor a preteen girl.
So this is very problematic obviously many people were not happy so they expressed it on the comments. But other people took it to far with death threats the writer deleted every post about it.
They explained that the reader would have been an adult they deleted everything about the post and they are still explaining what they really meant. I'm not going to put my opinion I don't know if the apology is sincere but nobody deserves death threats.
But this was not not the only problem because there are many uhm problematic things that people noticed in other fanfictions:
Infatalizing the reader
Weird age gaps
Namor meets reader for the first time when she was a child
Weird amount of non/dub con, r*pe fanfiction,
People ignoring Mayan to write in Spanish
Don't be mad but this Namor would not like or have a white love interest, but that doesn't mean that white writers can't write him but describing reader with elemetns that only white people have is not good. If somebody comes here and say what about black/asian/latino/aboriginal!reader I will block without explaining.
Arrenged marriage trope but is not really arranged is forced people should learn the difference
Namor beign misogynistic
White wirters ignoring advice or concern of people of colour
the list goes on and this happens with other men of colour in the MCU because I will never forget Killmonger and M'baku, how some of you describe them or obseesd in wrting only smuts with them is ano no for me
Like now that Fantastic 4 are coming to the MCU the portayal of Namor is very important, canon, fanon and in fanfictions. In the comics Namor he's obsessed with Sue Storm and she uses him to make Richard jealous. So if the MCU portays him as a man who forces himself and being used by a white woman it will not look good especially for latino men
People have to remeber Namor is a man of colour and all this things I listed can reinforce many stereotypes that can harm the latino and native community. But this is with all monorities
So please write with caution and be educated

A long ramble about hand held radios, and Firewatch AU
I'm playing fast and loose with two-way radios in Firewatch AU, lol. But to be fair, I knew that going in and so should you have. My dad's got a HAM radio license so I asked him some questions earlier in the week which he's more than happy to talk about.
Firstly, and I already knew this, but there is little chance Grian and Scar would be able to talk to each other from anywhere. VHF (very high frequency) radios are very much line of sight, and things like mountains will easily block the signal. VHF is the type of radio that would be found on top of fire towers, though. A fire lookout's height is dual purpose: not only is it tall enough to keep watch from, but it's talk enough for an antenna, repeater, etc for the Forest Service to communicate on. So, Grian and Scar would easily communicate from the tower but not from the ground.
I think it's a better story to just stretch reality a bit and have them been in communication more easily, though. The game of Firewatch did the same. But I have to admit it's an interesting narrative challenge if they could only communicate from their towers. However, I prefer the story as it is, even without this aspect of realism. There are places in the story where I've attempted to acknolwedge this by mentioning that the signal is weaker.
UHF (ultra high frequency) is also an option for them, perhaps? My dad did not talk as much about it. It seems like these are used more by emergency services (police, fire, etc.) My brief google searching says they're slightly better for ground communications where there's stuff in the way, like concrete buildings. But they can still be blocked, though since they are also mostly line-of-sight based. VHF was better at open distance, hence my dad telling me the lookout would use that. I found a document from the National Interagency Fire Center with approved radios for wildland firefighting and it listed both UHF and VHF with no notes on which was preferred.
If you're wondering why the difference is important, it's mostly the frequencies they work at. VHF band radios work at 30-300 MHz and UHF is 300 MHz to 3 GHz. Honestly though, I'm not sure the true differences between these--is a specific range of frequencies better than others, or just different? Anyway, FM radio (like in your car) is in the same range as VHF if you were wondering.
Unfortunately I still don't understand frequencies very well. I've used frequency and channel interchangeably in the fanfic but channel is more so "the programmed/designated number on the radio" and the frequency is the actual...wavelength? Mostly, I want to know if it is possible for Grian and Scar to actually have their own channel to talk on.
In the game Firewatch, this specifically is never acknowledged or covered IIRC. What does happen is that Henry and Delilah realize someone is listening in on their conversations, since anyone with a radio can tune into that channel and monitor it. The person on the other end accidentally makes a sound (would have had to be transmitting while doing so) and gives themself away. So Delilah brings Henry a new radio on a different channel so they can speak "freely" again (only if their new frequency wasn't discovered.)
What the game doesn't acknowledge, that I have acknowledged, is that the radios that fire lookouts use go out to the entire Forest Service. Fire lookouts do not have chill chats with each other. That is not how the job works. Fire lookouts give reports as needed and otherwise monitor the channel for other updates. When a lookout reports a fire, there is another Forest Service employee on the other end who takes that report. If a fire is happening, important information will be shared on the line. If there is some other issue a ranger needs to report, it will be shared on the line. There is no space for personal chats because it is business-only, and the air needs to be clear if someone in the National Forest has to radio in an emergency. This was pretty much immediately clear to me when I picked up Philip Conor's memoir about being a lookout.
In fact, here's the radio frequencies used by the Wapiti Ranger District in Shoshone National Forest:
Tumblr media
But, we like radio chats! We want our characters to be able to speak to each other freely! That's one of the things that makes Firewatch such a magical game, and it's basically the core plot-moving piece of my story as well. So I improvise, and thus in chapter one of my fic Scar tells Grian to note down their personal channel that is different from the Forest-wide one.
So why am I concerned if it's actually possible for them to have a channel? What I've written seems plausible enough?
Well, I am inexperienced. I do not know much about radios and even my chats with my dad didn't illuminate this much for me. I know that there are channels within frequency bands that are locked from use (i.e. your VHF radio can't intercept someone's cell phone call) and channels with designated use. You are also supposed to have a license to transmit on many channels, but things like a Wal-Mart walkie talkie or a CB radio can be operated by non-licensed individuals only on the specific channels they are programmed on, the national license-free channels. I don't personally give much mind to whether Grian and Scar are licensed or not, I feel like they operate under the FS and are just doing their little thing on the side (legal or not.)
What channel are Grian and Scar using, if it is a labeled one? Do "random" channels exist, if you just tuned your radio to a random frequency? Do all channels have designations? And where do things like repeaters fall into this? I read mention of TX tone and RX tone and immediately got lost. AFAIK some radios literally cannot transmit on certain frequencies without modification. I'm just not savvy enough on the subject to answer my own questions, unfortunately!
When my dad gives me and my mom radios when we hike, he told me we're just using the National Calling Frequency, 146.520. Since our VHF hand held radios have little power, it's unlikely that we will be intercepted. I can confirm though that I have used this radio and heard pieces of other people's conversations come through, though.
So back to channels, and what I do know, and what I'm working with. The 2M band (144-148 MHz) is the most popular for radio operators to talk on, so it's probably something in that range that they use. Honestly, the list of frequencies adjacent to the National Calling Frequency in this article below is the closest I have come to getting an answer.
Basically...I think Grian and Scar are just using a random 2m band talk frequency, that anyone could intercept if they wanted. But since they are in such a remote area, there is little to no chance of their conversations being overpowered by someone with a stronger radio. They more or less have privacy simply because so few people are in that area using that frequency. They are using a talk frequency separate to the National Forest frequency in order to have personal conversations and not cause interference with their jobs. In my AU, Grian has only his one radio and mostly keeps it on the frequency where he can talk to Scar. Scar has more senority in the job and more equipment at his lookout, so he monitors several frequencies at once.
And that's the end of this world's most confusing post on radios, thanks!

It'll sound weird I know and I'm sorry that I come anonymously but with how things are, I dont want to get bullied by others for saying it. But as much as I do not appreciate your art, I've had the opportunity to talk to you and you're one of the nicest people in this fandom. You really distinguish yourself like that. Im on multiple platforms so I see a lot of the harassment you go through. Truth is, what makes me mad is that people are getting bullied for having anything to do with you, for *fictional characters*, but I've never seen anyone invest this energy for the actual bad stuff that happen and that are perpetuated in this community. Only a small community of fans raises their finger when there's blatant misogyny or racism for example. And those concern real people, the band itself or other fans that fall victim of them. I do not personally support your art, but I find it very easy to not follow you. And if I was severely offended by it, I'd simply block you. Also how are you responsible if people repost your pieces ?
Ghost fandom will make a fuss about someone they don't like instead of just blocking, but will turn their eyes when there's a bigger problem. The fiction is somehow far more important for ghost fans than actual problems that affect real breathing people. The hypocrisy and audacity are disgusting. They're here doxxing people and threatening them on platforms while acting like they're on the right side.
Major respect for you, still being there after all of that.
I gotta agree with the whole “fiction is more important” aspect that they have.
What irks me is that when I was on Twitter again some time ago , I followed my friends like what a normal person would do right? And they would actually harass my friends. Who did nothing but just followed me.
Like they didn’t even post art, or anything. It’s just that they see that I’m one of their mutuals and the attack starts. I deactivated Twitter because I don’t want anybody to attack my friends just because they have something to do with me.
It’s a weird place isn’t it that when people didn’t get their priorities straight and think that what they are doing are good when in fact it’s straight up harmful.
I really don’t mind if people didn’t like my art, I’m not the one going into people’s DM and start sending hate messages.
I just wish they stop hurting others just because of the “oh you know that guy? Well you’re a terrible person” that’s insanity
I stayed because there are people who matters here and I just want others who don’t follow their style of HCs to know that hey it’s ok if you don’t follow canon, not everybody in the fandom is like that.
Also because I’m stubborn as fuck lol and no teens are gonna throw me off a fandom because of hate mails

tgamm fandom stop treating Molly like an empty vessel/a stepping stone for Scratch's development and nothing else challenge
sidenote: if you tag this as a ship you're getting blocked on sight
The way some of you are talking about All in the Mind and The Ghost IS Molly McGee is making me incredibly uncomfortable. I've seen some very weird takes about how Scratch is going to "steal" Molly's body and swap with her because he misses being a human again and that the conflict of the episode is that he won't want to give it back at the end of the day. I've seen people question what Molly even has to be sad about when the episode summary literally describes both of them going through something rough. I've seen takes imply that Molly's issues and her own trauamas don't matter because Scratch is "so much worse off than her". It's incredibly rude and disrespectful to claim that because he's "had it worse" that means she has no right to feel upset and uncomfortable and trauamatized by her past. Not only is that literally a real-life claim that abusers use when talking about their victims, but it underplays Scatch's character and his development so much.
Molly is his best friend in the entire world and he would be horrified at the aspect of stealing her body and not giving it back, or claiming that her feelings are nothing compared to his own; he wants her to be happy, he wants to be a good friend, he's not gonna suddenly downspiral all the way to how he was before the series started just because he's in a human body for ten minutes. Not to mention that he's possessed humans before! He knows what it feels like to be in a human body! He's done it multiple times! The idea that just because he's starting to look more into his past means that he wants to be human again is incredibly surface level at most.
All in the Mind doesn't have as many deeply uncomfortable takes, the way that some people talk about Molly and her role in the episode is....still not great. Molly does not exist to be his therapist. She does not exist only to reunite him with Adia. She does not exist solely to fix Scratch. She's her own person with her own hopes and dreams and personality and the idea that she's only there as a temporary fix is really hurtful to see! Scratch has canonically expressed time and time again that he can't imagine his afterlife without Molly in it. He values her presence very much, and has shown time and time again that he typically values her wants over his own, because he cares about her!!! He wants her to be happy too!!!!!
They're a team!!! They're both the titular character!! You cannot seriously look me in the eyes and say that Scratch is more important or more of the main character or has more conflict than her and tell me we're watching the same show. You can't have one without the other!! That's literally the plot of the first season!!!!
Stop acting like Molly isn't a valuable character in her own show!!!!

No. 23 - Icelandair (With an Aside on the Role of Flag Carriers)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sure, let's talk about Icelandair! I think they fit in pretty well with the conversation that's been slowly playing out with other European flag carriers Lufthansa and SAS about the evolution of liveries as we stumble in to the 2020s proper. (As for the second half of this ask, hold that thought for just a minute.)
Unfortunately, Lufthansa snuck its nasty little face into this post as well, and I do sort of want to give a brief content warning, as a...certain sordid point in Germany's history is alluded to, though not lingered on. Because flag carriers are sort of important. They're propaganda - and in Icelandair's case, that's okay!
Icelandair is not a concept that needs much explanation. It's right there in the title. It is an airline, and it is from Iceland. If you want a little more information, here's a summary written in 1997 by John K. Morton for his book "Jetliner Glory". (Scan mine)
Tumblr media
As you can see, Icelandair was, at this point, rocking a supersized nothingburger of a livery. With just a cheatline and some paint on the bottom of the nacelles to accompany the logo and wordmark it feels less like SAS's belly stripes or Tibet Airlines, where it looks like a plane painted white, and feels more like they just forgot to add the rest of the livery.
Tumblr media
While I do slightly prefer this older take with the more faded colours, the bare metal underside, and the contoured down-sloping cheatline, it's still pretty nothing.
Tumblr media
Oh no. Oh nonononono don't do that please don't-
Tumblr media
Thank you. That's much less worse.
Tumblr media
The blue-and-yellow livery was adopted in 2006. I don't like this but this feels necessary. What stands out to me about Icelandair, above any individual feature of their fleet, is that they are fundamentally incapable of departing from whatever the most simplified and common design trend of the time is.
70s and early 80s. Single rule cheatline, large font wordmark, bare metal lower half.
80s and early 90s. All over paint, text moved forward to just behind the forwardmost door. Beginning of strict adherence to Eurowhite en masse.
Aughts to late 2010s. This is an era of somewhat refined Eurowhite. This allows very specific colored parts of the airframe: a block of color on the underside, a detached floating tail, colored winglets, and colored nacelles.
Tumblr media
My opinion of this specific livery is that it is nearly identical to Delta's. Similar dark blue shade, exact same layout. The only difference is that Delta's blue engines make the livery look more coherent and Delta's logo is far more distinctive. I consider Delta to be the platonic ideal of this type of 2000s Eurowhite, and Icelandair uses the exact same layout.
I will say...it could be worse. Icelandair does not fail the Star Alliance test, so I cannot give it an F.
It's getting a D, for Delta.
Tumblr media
But hey! Great news! They literally just unveiled a new one! And they've given me a nice webpage describing their thought process. I keep seeing more and more airlines do this with their 2020s livery releases and I think it's awesome.

And they're jellybeans! I make no secret for my love of jellybeans. These come in five colours: boreal blue, magenta, sky blue, yellow, and green. Each of them is meant to represent a different aspect of Icelandic natural phenomenae, which I would expect at least partially stems from the response to their widely beloved Hekla Aurora and Vatnajökull liveries.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The two colours not pictured above: boreal blue (left) and green (right)
I really like these choices of colour. I think my favourite is ultimately magenta because of how striking its contrast is with the main blue, but none of these look even a little bad.
I do wish there was a little more integration of the jellybean colours into the rest of the livery (maybe the winglets or the engine nacelles, or as an outline on the wordmark, or extended to the underside of the plane), but the concept itself is solid and each colourway is pleasing. While I think this is a welcome change from the earlier yellow-and-blue scheme I am very happy that they kept a yellow variant.
Tumblr media
Red engine SAS livery jumpscare in the background.
I would say the main thing I dislike about the new livery is the billboard wordmark. It's fine in theory but I utterly despise the typeface they've chosen and I find that sans-serif typefaces look fine when they're small but get uglier and uglier the larger you make them. It's a very boring downgrade, especially compared to the tasteful little serifs on the very tips of the old one. They were a minor aerodynamic touch but they were very nice compared to this, which is giving corporate brochure in a way I can't stand. At least it keeps the middle fuselage from being blank, I suppose.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I do like it a lot better on the Dash 8, though it's a little too low to the bottom for my taste. They could solve this by just making it slightly smaller, but they've apparently fully committed to a font that is, in my opinion, too large and widely spaced.
I feel like they also missed an opportunity with their logo. I've seen people say that it's a stylised 'F' to represent the company's first name, Flugfélag. I've heard someone else say that it reminds them of a stylised aurora, and I agree with them. I think there was a lot of room to play with both of these, and that it's a shape that's simple enough and dynamic enough to lend itself well to livery design, and that they could have created something so much better had they made more use of it - especially with the jellybean colours.
The final thing I want to point out is the tail. It's very blatant that the 2020s equivalent of the detached tail is the slightly-integrated tail, which loops down and just prevents the tail from being detached while still leaving the majority of the fuselage blank white without really adding much visual interest or presenting much in the way of creativity.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
SAS and WestJet are two other airlines from those I've covered which do this. Now, they could both be a lot worse - WestJet has a nice wordmark and I've already talked about why SAS does a lot that's more interesting than the tail - but I can't deny that I dislike this trend. It fixes the ugliness of Detached Tail Syndrome but without adding much. It is the bare minimum. It is an upgrade from bad to nothing. And I think it's worth noting that both of these airlines, and indeed the majority of airlines with slightly-integrated tails, used to have detached tails. The Lufthansa clone of the 2020s is the Delta clone of the 2010s.
But I think Icelandair's new livery requires comparison to one 2020s livery more than any other - our old 'friend', Lufthansa.
Tumblr media
The reason I point out Lufthansa is that unlike SAS and WestJet it does not feature a curve, but a straight line downwards. It also features more than one colour on the tail itself, sort of - I mean, it has the contrasting white stripe.
I don't think I particularly need to linger on why I like Icelandair's livery so much better than I like Lufthansa's. But I will point out one aspect in particular. The descriptions of the inspiration behind Lufthansa's livery focus on how sleek and modern it is. It occasionally mentions nebulous 'German values' (a phrase which in context refers to Europe's obsession with the most hideous sans-serif fonts on the face of the planet and soul-sucking minimalist white design but which sort of makes me shudder as a disabled bisexual Jew, a set of traits seemingly min-maxxed for being a target of...well, you know) but beyond that is wholly and almost gleefully corporate, scoffing in the face of the fact that flag carriers are almost by design intended to be unprofitable, to provide air transport to residents of their country and to serve as propaganda.
Air France lost heaps of money on Concorde, Alitalia went fourteen years without turning a profit, and do you think carriers like Rwandair or Air Niugini, which just don't have the demand to operate planes filled to capacity, are able to make money? Of course not, but they operate anyway because people need to get places and it's a statement for a government, especially one without the means of a massive European power with centuries of stolen resources at its disposal or an ultrawealthy Gulf state, to put their names on a plane and say that this is a service they are providing to the people they are, on paper, meant to provide for.
This is not a feature unique to airlines - just think about the way high-speed rail in China and Japan are inherently tied to their national identities, as something these countries have built as a service to their people and as something which makes them better places to live. Think about the Space Race, which was a dick-measuring contest more than it was for science. The US government is notorious for its unwillingness to fund science projects but if it means sticking it to the reds it's worth a couple billion to put a man on the moon.
Any sort of project which invents or builds by necessity becomes a symbol of national power. Sometimes these things are useful, like high-speed rail, and sometimes they advance science, like reaching the moon, but, like...did Ferrari World need to exist, or is the UAE willing to spend a bunch of money to say "look how awesome we are, we have the fastest roller-coaster in the world"? Did the USSR need the Tu-144? Of course not - luxury air transport wasn't a thing, they couldn't charge a premium, and there wasn't anywhere safe to release a sonic boom over, and it was rushed out in a state that couldn't really be considered airworthy just to serve for less than a year while diverting resources from actually useful aerospace projects. The Tu-144 set back Soviet aerospace engineering by decades but it was worth it for the chance to say they built the first supersonic airliner, which will remain technically true forever. Countries are chomping at the bit to displace people and abuse labourers and waste money and resources to build stadiums that will lie derelict for the rest of time just to get to say they hosted the Olympics.
These things are worth losing money for. To say 'we are willing to lose money to give our people transport and to have our own airline with our own flag on it'. Flag carriers do not need to be profitable. If they happen to turn a profit that's a good thing for the country but it's not meant to be the point. That the US has never had a flag carrier feels like a very pointed statement to me - no handouts, pull yourself up by your bootstraps and build your own damn airline. While many large airlines elsewhere have their own founders with their own marks on history and large personalities, none of them have the cultural capital that Juan Trippe or Howard Hughes do. Icelandair's equivalent of Juan Trippe is the aurora.
I cannot imagine a carrier which reflects its national identity less than Lufthansa does. Perhaps they want to forget that they are a flag carrier and by this nature propaganda. After all, despite being largely a different entity, they bear the name of a flag carrier founded by the Third Reich. They had an easy out of this. They could have stuck with their initial name, Luftag. They could even have taken the name and branding of Interflug, the East German flag carrier, but better to be founded by the actual Third Reich than by the Communists, from their perspective. It's probably better to lean as far away from what they were made to be as possible. And from their point of view to be as corporate as possible is actually probably a reflection of what there is to love about Germany, given that this is their background. I find that incredibly sad. If I were German, this would make me furious. There is so much more to Germany than anything Lufthansa has ever been. It is insulting not just to my eyes but to the idea that it is meant to be part of German identity.
Meanwhile, Icelandair's inspiration is Iceland: the natural features which make their country worth visiting. They are aware of this - they actually used the Hekla Aurora livery to promote the fact that they offered free week-long stopovers in Iceland. Their website explicitly lays, interspersed with images of aurora over snowy mountainous landscapes which seem to stretch on forever, that this is what Iceland has to offer.
And since we spend so much time in the sky, we drew inspiration from what we see in front of us, and what we see in our country from above. [...] By extending our color palette, we have a chance to bring the vibrant Icelandic spirit to the world, and to show the world the diversity of our people: The Icelandic spirit is available to anyone and everyone who wants to share in it.
At the end of the day, flag carriers are a form of propaganda. That word normally has a very nasty connotation, but it doesn't have to be things like war crime coverups and attempts to quell rebellion. In this case, it can be an encouragement for Icelandic people to be proud of something about their country as well as an attempt to drum up tourism. Is it still a calculated attempt to sell you something? Sure. But it's an attempt to sell something Icelandic people are proud of, because they live somewhere with beautiful features that don't exist anywhere else. I really want to visit Iceland, and have for years, for the exact reasons outlined in Icelandair's material about their new livery.
And does this livery actually overtly communicate these things? No, not really. I think it's something you can see when you have it explained to you but wouldn't notice at a glance. But the fact that this was considered at all, much like condor's justification for their flying striped nightmares, keeps me from feeling the same sort of disgust I do for liveries like Lufthansa's.
So, Icelandair could do a lot better. But they're doing a lot better than they ever have before. And they have succeeded, fundamentally, at being Icelandair.
Tumblr media
I leave them with a final grade of C.
It could be better. Far better. But they're at least using the right equation to get the wrong answer. If they ever get the courage to design something which doesn't follow the dominant trends in whatever the decade's particular flavour of Eurowhite is as if it's copied from a template, I think Icelandair could come up with something really great, and I hope I live long enough to see it.
And, as a final note on their commitment to their national identity, I will be discussing their three non-crossover special liveries: Þingvellir, Vatnajökull, and this blog's first twice-requested livery, Hekla Aurora. But they will get their own post, because this one is already preposterously long, so get ready to see a lot more Iceland very very soon.
(...I really want to visit Iceland.)
