They completely reframed Joel’s decision at the end of the game to the screen adaptation in The Last of Us. I don’t like it.

Firstly, I do want to mention that although I like the adaptation of the Last of Us, and this it is single-handedly the best video game screen adaptation we have (admittedly not saying much. Prince of Persia anyone? The Tomb Raider series with Angelina Jolie? Assassins Creed? Blah. Though this is a genuinely good piece of media.) I found that they were not subtle enough with the themes for my liking. The first game did not beat you over the head with it’s message of hope, but show does a lot of hand holding. Case and point: In the game, Joel implies he had suicidal thoughts after Sarah’s death. Well, in the last episode, Pedro’s Joel outright tells Ellie he tried, but failed. You don’t need to hold our hand all the time. You can let us draw our own conclusions.

That being said, I find that more of a minor quibble I have compared to this one: the refraining of Joel’s decision in the last episode. In the game, as you are playing it, you are in control of how many people you ultimately kill on your way to Ellie. Barring the doctor of course. The big set piece is when Joel finds Ellie and takes her away. As Joel, you run away from the other fireflies while the music plays, and of course it mirrors the beginning of the game with Sarah. The game does not make Joel’s pursuit to Ellie the set piece, but rather the rescue. The game notes how Joel is essentially redeeming time, saving Ellie where he couldn’t save his daughter.

In the show however, they make the set piece Joel’s pursuit of Ellie. The score plays over the carnage--Joel mercilessly shooting his way down to Ellie, with the camera even drawing attention to some of the people as he passes. When he picks up Ellie after, he just goes down the elevator with little fanfare. The creators are not drawing attention to Joel’s “redemption,” but Joel’s carnage. It ultimately frames him as much more selfish. And sure, he did partly save Ellie for selfish reasons. But that wasn’t the only reason.

I know why they did it, they’re setting the stage for adapting part 2. However, I do not like part two for a myriad of reasons, some of which I’m sure Craig Mazin can clean up, but there are other reasons that I saw bleed into the show. Joel’s decision at the end of the first game, ultimately, in my opinion, was a morally gray choice, but a choice a lot of others agree with. (I asked my own dad, and he said Joel was justified.) The second game takes away that moral ambiguity and paints it as a bad choice, and one where Joel was completely in the wrong. In my opinion no one was right--no one asked Ellie what she wanted, and the tragedy becomes people just assuming things for a young girl who has her own wants and agency. (but no matter that, story for another time.)

So is the refraining a subtle thing? Yes sure. It speaks volumes however about how Druckmann specifically has more or less changed his stance on Joel’s decision from that of a morally gray one, to one that is “wrong.”

genuinely one of the worst things that’s happened to television in the last few years (exacerbated by streaming services) is death of Filler. going from 20 episodes to 8 because “we didn’t really need that episode where the main characters went to the beach right? it had no long lasting effect” but we DID!!! we needed to see how they act without the Big Bad Plot and to establish the dynamics between the characters and lay in the sun (do they forget sunscreen? how do they react to a thieving seagull? do they get buried in the sand or do they do the burying?). the plot isn’t everything. the action doesn’t hit as hard without the quiet moments. give us character development and our little scenes back

VERY IMPORTANT a dam in the Netherlands, the weerdsluis lock, is directly on a migratory path for spawning fish. They have a worker stationed there to open the door for the fish, but they can take a while to open it. So to keep the fish from getting preyed on by birds they installed a doorbell. Only, the fish don't have hands to ring the doorbell. If you go to their website, they have a LIVE CAMERA AND A DOORBELL that YOU RING FOR THE FISH when they're waiting, and then the dam worker opens the door for them! I can't express how obsessed I am with this. look at this shit. oh my god.

Please check on the fish doorbell once in a while :)

a man self immolated in front of the israeli embassy in washington dc yesterday. not just any man. an active member of the us air force. he live streamed his death, and said that he refused to be complicit in a genocide any longer. he said that compared to what palestinians were facing every day, setting himself alight was nothing.

let me reiterate. an active duty air force member burned himself alive because he was so disgusted by what the us government was openly supporting. he live-streamed his own suicide, so the whole world could bear witness as a man in his military uniform set himself on fire to protest his government’s complicity in the horrors that we have all been forced to watch happen in real time. he became a new horror. footage of the immolation blurs him out the moment the fire catches, but you can hear him. it is over in seconds, really, but you can hear him screaming. he shouts “free palestine” until his body physically cannot make any sounds other than guttural screams of agony. and then he falls silent. a police officer arrives and points a gun at his still burning body, shouting at him to get down on the ground. and it is over.

his name was Aaron Bushnell. he was twenty five years old. and he isn’t here anymore because the political ruling class has decided that genocide is perfectly fine as long as it preserves imperialism. in the coming days, people will try to discredit him. to say that he was mentally unstable. they will try to bury his actions to save face and defend israel’s propaganda. do not let them. aaron knew what he was doing. he knew what he was doing when he put on his military uniform, set up his twitch stream, and made his final walk up to the embassy. he knew what would happen to him when he flicked that lighter. do not let them forget. aaron’s blood is on the hands of the political ruling class.
