it's always so fascinating and heartbreaking when a character in a story is simultaneously idolized and abused. a chosen prophet destined for martyrdom. a child prodigy forced to grow up too fast. a powerful warrior raised as nothing but a weapon. there's just something so uniquely messed up about singing someone's praises whilst destroying them.

I swallowed. Was this why mother insisted we practice with sword and axe daily? I turned and saw her.

"Very well," my mother said. "I have stayed in shape for this day."

You know, I like Hot Rod in the 1986 movie. I don't like the 1986 movie, but I like Hot Rod. He's a good kid overall. And it's kinda interesting/sad that he's one of the best damned deconstructions of the Chosen One archetype I've ever seen.

He beats Unicron! He's got the Matrix! He's the Chosen One even more than Optimus Prime! Great... except Hot Rod 1. has no training in government 1. has no willingness to really learn and 3. really, really chafes and dislikes being in charge.

And we see it in season three. I know some folks might point to individual episodes where he starts learning... but it never sticks. He never wanted the job, and he hates it. The Decepticons should be a nuisance at best after the movie and being led by someone certifiably insane, but they still remain a big threat to the Autobots. Relations with Earth got more than a bit tense in some episodes like Burden Hardest to Bear. He's gotta be overall miserable.

It's actually one of the things I hate about the Matrix. Optimus Prime didn't need some divinely-anointed disco ball to lead. He was the leader by being awesome at it.

I have to confess I'm a sucker for Chosen One narratives where the protagonist is the Chosen One not because they're secretly some sort of fate-bound sorcerer or genetic übermensch, but because their bizarrely specific skill-set just happens to be exactly what's needed to save the day.

Who would you say is the Chosen One in BBC Merlin?

In Arthurian mythology itself, I'd say Arthur, as he's destined to be the Once and Future King, pull Excalibur out of the Stone etc. But in the BBC show, the focus is much more on Merlin and the crushing weight of his destiny under which he's crumbling, the choices and sacrifices he has to make. It is because of him that Arthur can become the king he is destined to be. For me, the Chosen One is the one who is predestined to do certain things, to do something heroic in order to achieve something, and the important thing is that he's the only one who can bring about whatever he's supposed to bring about. In my opinion, that would be Merlin here, not Arthur, since Arthur is more passive whereas Merlin is constantly working to fulfill his destiny and make the future he is supposed to bring come to pass. It's also important to note that Arthur doesn't KNOW that he has a destiny, which a Chosen One would.

So I'm wondering, in terms of the 'Chosen One', who would you say it is?

btw. all my fallout protags (except lone wanderer) are related/descendants of each other. agafia is a vault dweller, a grandgrandsomething parent to krizh, a chosen one, who is a mother of alexey, wendy's biological father :) they're like cartoon carbon copies and i think its hilarious
