About 10 mins into The Avengers rewatch, title card shows and these thoughts so far:
- This movie gets sometimes critiqued for looking flat/like a tv production and... yeah. It kinda does. But also look very comic book. It chooses a lot of fun angles and poses and just... it feels VERY well matched with the energy of a fun comic book superhero story. For example comparing it to Thor 1 which I think looks better on its own, that also is trying to match a different tone.
- This script is efficient. All the lines are quotable but in general I think what strikes me is how efficient and tbh simple a lot of the script is. But it also makes it accessible which leads to the next point,
- This will be even more clear when we get to all the introductions but this movie is so "beginner" friendly. Ofc this was a hit. You could see it with limited knowledge of the characters and still understand the vibe and the basic plot.
Wow! Your Ignihyde redesigns are so fucking ugly! So hideous and uninspired, and their ugliness is only amplified by your very poor drawing skills and even uglier art style! And it's laughable how you really believe that you did better than the official designs, never do that again, you can't design or draw for shit.
too late i'm already planning a heartslabyul redesign lmao
as a cult survivor, i have immense respect for how @quiddie handled the lukura in burrow's end. specifically in episode 1, the moment that it was revealed that thorn was a cult leader, i was ready to bail, but i decided to stick through the first episode at least just to see if it was something i could handle. and... man. i was genuinely sobbing with relief by the end of the episode.
the problem with so much cult-driven media, i find, is that it dehumanises the members/victims of the cult. they're just there to be vaguely creepy, or to sacrifice themselves for their leader(s), or to die outright to cult doctrine, usually for shock value. they're not actually people.
so you can imagine my fear when the stoats were escaping the poison, that we were going to get some scene where a member has to sacrifice themselves for thorn/viola, or it would be revealed that they all died waiting for orders etc. but we didn't... instead, in their last moments, aabria gave them what cult victims in media very rarely get — agency. viola's anger being met with teedles' "but they have families too," yes... yes!!! thank you! and then "if they ran, it was because they hoped to save them, and i can't begrudge them for that" i just... i don't think i can actually put into words how much that exchange meant to me. it was such a departure from what we're used to. even though most of them still died(?), it was not in service to thorn, or because of their lukura's beliefs. they were mothers and fathers and daughters and sons; they were no different to any of the pcs. they were trying to save themselves. aabria... the woman that you are. thank you.

I am once again thinking about Dazai and Ango's friendship and how Ango is the only person Dazai approached with the intention of just hanging out. Like, I can't recall any underlying motive other than Dazai's plain interest in the man when he noticed that Ango was making records of people who died in the DHC.
Objectively speaking, it would've been easy to say "oh, Dazai wants to have Ango as a contact as the man who knows the mafia's secrets" and for Ango, it would be easy to note that "it's probably better for him to be on good terms with an executive for his undercover mission" but that's... literally not what their dynamic was at all. They talked about anything other than work. They just hung out.
Has Dazai ever had another instance where he expresses interest in getting to know someone without ulterior motives? I can't think of anyone before or after where he did.
Dazai didn't suspect Ango until he saw the umbrella in his case on the night they took the photo together. And honestly, I think a huge part of the reason that Dazai is still so angry at him is not just because he was involved in the events that led to Odasaku's death but also because it was Dazai that invited him to Bar Lupin in the first place (in his own weird Dazai way). Like, that must've hurt, man. Dazai isn't the trusting sort and he also has this "everything's going to end eventually" mentality so I have to wonder if his stable friendship with Odasaku and partnership with Chuuya, both of which had lasted at least a year by this point if I'm not mistaken, made him feel bolder about going up to someone he didn't know and trying to initiate a friendship himself... only for that person to turn out to be a fucking triple agent.
It's sad, honestly. The tragedy in Dark Era wasn't just Odasaku's death imo it was the entire dissolution of the whole trio, which started with Ango's betrayal and ended with the death of their mutual friend.
Angst aside though, their friendship is really funny to me too - literally they are nothing alike, their values don't align AT ALL and it's comedy gold, especially in Wan.
I think about the only thing they have in common is that they both absolutely suck at acting on their hearts over their heads. Like, Ango has values that contradict those of his boss and career and Dazai has feelings that run counter to the most logical solution but they almost always prioritize orders/logic unless someone is dying or there is a literal world-ending threat somewhere and even then
Oh and I suppose they have their screwed-up sleep schedules too.
Sorry but am I the only one that thought that episode…sucked? Like it was straight up bad. Horrible pacing, no wrap up of all the random characters and plot lines they’ve thrown around all season (the tuskegee airmen, Westgates spying, literally all the guys beside like the main 4). (Seriously it makes me so mad that the three redtails got all of 5 seconds of screen time, almost no lines. Literally what was the point of introducing them other than to pretend the show was iNcLuSiVe) Even at the end of BoB and the Pacific you get a much better idea of what happened to all the remaining guys. In this they’re like what happened to DeMarco or Hambone or Brady or (insert character here) we don’t know! ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ The concentration camp scene felt shoehorned in compared to how it was done in BoB. Unless that actually happened to Rosie (which i haven’t heard anything about) but it was just like.. ok? It all felt so rushed and emotionless to me. Maybe I’ve just fallen out of love with MoTA but it’s been downhill for me since episode 6 or so.
i already made a little (read: long) post-finale write-up here, where i talk about the use of the tuskegee airmen, l'sandra, and overall editing/pacing issues i felt the show had. but i don't agree with the notion that adding the redtails was in any way insincere or trying to halfass being "iNcLuSiVe", i just think they suffer from this show's obvious time constraints. and to summarize what i wrote in my linked post, there's a limit to what white writers/directors/producers can do when creating a story about black people. there are some stories i'd feel uncomfortable with them telling on their own, truth be told. dee rees wasn't the sole nonwhite director, but she Was the only black one. i think she did her job well given the limitations and i appreciate that they let her direct those episodes, rather than leaving it up to a team of white people trying their best to tell a black story.
the worst i can say about the finale is that it didn't feel like That strong of finale, tho i wouldn't go as far to say it "sucked" or call it "straight up bad". i liked it plenty, it's just the weakest of the hbo war finales imo.
as for the concentration camp scene, artistic license was taken with both shows. unlike what's seen in the BoB, easy company wasn't the first to arrive at kaufering, and there's 0 mention of the all-japanese american 552nd who helped them liberate it). similarly, rosie rosenthal did assist in liberating those camps, though it would've been after the events shown this episode. idk if he saw one in that up-close way seen in this episode, but he could've (i should research this when i have time). plus, it would've felt weird Not having him acknowledge them at all. "shoe-horned" is an odd term to use here imo, as both scenes more-or-less center a jewish character (BoB's liebgott and MotA's rosie). the former show has survivors the characters can help, the latter shows no one left to help. the former has all of easy company there, the latter has rosie there all alone. rosie's scene felt deeply personal in that way. at the end of the day, both scenes are communicating different things. that doesn't make one better than the other when they aren't trying to be identical. (disclaimer, i'm not jewish, so i'd be interesting hearing from the perspective of someone who wrt whether or not they felt it was "shoe-horned")
i can understand if you've disliked the show post-episode 6 (and episode 6 was a very strong episode i'm ngl). eps 7 and 8 were weaker in many ways, even to me, so i get it. everyone's entitled to their own opinion (i'd be a hypocrite saying otherwise). just understand that this blog is run by someone who overall enjoys this show despite its flaws! basically, i encourage you to take this energy and make your own posts.
ok im a really chill and normal person and i get over things and am well adjusted but take a walk with me here. just give me my time to complain when im not in the absolute fucking trenches. and yes i believe i suffered more than those in trench warfare. it was literally a lesbian situationship with a bistraight girl come on. just. magenta choppy shag with the roots coming in. camo cargo pants black t shirt with red lettering and striped long sleeve (sign someone likes music. confirmed). lip ring big black stud earrings and nails. red docs. i think lesbians should be allowed to kill one dyke baiter in their lifetime idc
DEEP DRAMATIC SIGHH guys i wrote the longest rambling post bcus i didnt know what to draw for the beginning of this animatic but deleted it bcus i got an idea but now that ideas just. not looking good. and now i need a NEW idea cries sobs
i got lazy... i was supposed to draw uni, meido, and abbi beside him but laziness striked so text it is.
also a lil more info about the shinigamis cuz i got attached to the shinigami part of the au and now have information that wont be known in the story so have at thee!
Black and white shinigami! Although they have a human form which also changes the colour of their outfits too. Though it doesn't change Omori's outfit much. (aside from the paw pads and inner ears of the cat hood turning pink + red ribbon)
All shinigamis have pitch black eyes. A shinigami can choose any pattern they want that can look like their pupils, much like with the diamond pattern on Omori's eyes. (Meido has heart patterns for her.)
Shinigamis won't have any memories of when they were alive.
Shinigamis have death marks! It'll usually appear as a black patch on their body.
Omori's death mark is at the center of his stomach.
Meido's death mark are lines on her neck that she hides using a choker.
Uni's death mark is practically his entire head.
Abbi's death mark isn't visible on her body in the same way. Her hair is always dripping wet. (She still has the question mark here as well.)
When a shinigami has departed, (which usually means they got "fired" in a sense) the number they have is passed on to an unassigned shinigami to keep consistency of the numbering.
The number of times a codename has been passed on is the letter before the number. In Omori's case, it'll be 3 times. (A codename that hasn't been passed on will just have the number with no letter.)
Abbi was A-104, Meido is D-130, Uni is 109 (Uni is the oldest of them with Meido being the 2nd oldest although Abbi took on the caretaker role when she was around.)
my brain wrote a whole beyond evil fic for my dreams today and now i'm so sad that i'll never get another chapter. it was so good
i wrote down what i remembered after i woke up, but it's not the same now that i know i can have good fics without opening my browser and adding a bunch of filters on ao3. whyyy
