Modern AU Gaang Martial Arts Headcanons :) 🥋

Zuko:

He and Azula were forced into both Judo and Karate from a young age. Zuko constantly got frustrated with his katas and that his technique wasn’t perfect, while Azula was always angry that people didn’t want to spar with her because she was so aggressive. Despite their challenges (which included both of them breaking people’s bones by accidents), they both reached first-degree black belt. Zuko stopped attending when he moved in with Iroh, but Azula is a third-degree black belt.

Toph:

She likes more physical arts, especially boxing and wrestling. She dabbled in taekwondo but the speed wasn’t her forte so she decided to go into boxing instead, and from there, she joined the school’s wrestling team and does BJJ on her own time. She’s gotten in trouble many, many times because she doesn’t care much for rules, and has a clean WR rate of 84-3. Like Azula, most people are too scared to spar her, but she isn’t as frustrated about it.

Sokka:

His first experience in martial arts was from a crappy mall studio where he went because his parents wanted him to learn self-defence. He was a big Karate Kid watcher when he was young, and tried lots of martial arts, though was the best at taekwondo. As he got older, he didn’t have much interest in it, and just had his dad teach him techniques at home rather than attend a school. Toph always insists on sparring him, and he agreed once, but it left him bruised for weeks, so he doesn’t dabble in it much.

Katara:

While originally not much of a fan, she was raised the same as Sokka: take martial arts to learn how to defend yourself. While he liked the fighting, she was more of a fan of the technique, like her mother was. When her mom passed, it only magnified the choice, and she kept at Karate for a few years while Sokka only dabbled. She got to brown belt before her dojo was shut down and, combined with the other stresses of life, she took a break. She still loves martial arts, though, and watches lots of videos about them.

Aang:

He took a lot of Tibetan White Crane and tried a few other Chinese martial arts. He is skilled with the bo staff, too, and once he and Zuko became friends, they practised a lot of weapon sparring together. Aang’s marital arts practice involved a lot of conditioning, so he can do an impressively high amount of knuckle push-ups. He was taught mainly defence, which especially part of the reason he rarely won fights against Zuko, because he was often too afraid to attack, though that’s more of him being a pacifist than his martial art background.

Suki:

While she mainly performed Aikido and Kendo, Tessenjutsu had always been her favourite. She has extremely fast reflexes from so much practice. Additionally, she started a martial arts club in her school and met Sokka through there. She was like a mix of Katara and Sokka, enjoying the fighting and cultural aspects equally. When she went to college, it was harder to find a place to train especially with such a packed schedule, but she makes time for it.

this is less development and more enjoying drawing combat scenes again (Venus probably looks more competent from their perspectives than hers @v@)

Lots of people have praised the action scenes in Rise, and for me personally they scratch that very particular martial arts ....cinematography? choreography? itch I get from Jackie Chan’s 80s movies and Stephen Chow’s movies.

Like one of my favorite moments is when Mikey and Donnie do a combo move on the train where Mikey’s kusari-fundo’s weight loops around Donnie’s bo staff and absolutely wallops Foot Recruit in the face, A+ no notes

While there’s strikes in tessenjutsu, I like the defensive aspect more

....And I just got Storyboarder to run on my laptop.... the urge to board out a quick fight scene is growing.. 👀

Question what is One's Mystic weapon and her powers?

hookay *claps hands* let's do this

(for an easier understanding, i'll be refering to One by her future name Venus. also this got very long so i'll be putting it under a "read more")

so "traditionally" (aka, almost always), Venus is usually depicted with a tessen, a Japanese war fan. really. if you look up fan art of her, that's always the weapon she's drawn with. and i get it, i do. the tessen is an awesome weapon, and its humiliation potential is incredible. imagine being a seasoned warrior and you get your ass handed to you by some guy with a fan. amazing, incredible, showstopping, i'd never recover

but it's also very......typical. the tessen, due to its design, is seen by some modern TMNT/ninja fans as a "girly" weapon. so drawing Venus with it makes her seem like a dainty femme turtle than a warrior. which, i can admit i used to believe, but that's not the point

tessen are very versatile weapons; they can be used to deflect, parry, disarm, harm, and (very interestingly) send orders from far away. Venus having the tessen is, in my opinion, very suitable because in my depiction, she's a warrior, but she's also a modern western noble

being Big Mama's assisstant, top enforcer, and (as of now) sole bodyguard, she has to have a weapon that can help her harm but also defend. plus, the idea of her standing in the VIP box, tapping her fan to send an order to her men like a cold lady of war is far too good of an opportunity to pass up

i have no idea what her mystic power should be. in "The Next Mutation", she has magical powers as a result of training with a shaman. but my version of her doesn't have that training. she's a Hamato, so she has Ninpō, but she doesn't know about it and hasn't unlocked it yet

BUT I DON'T FUCKING KNOW WHAT IT SHOULD BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

i know what it looks like, but what it manifests as is what gives me trouble. so if any of you have any ideas feel free to send me some because i'm fucking STUCK

Found out that while tessen (war fans) were a real thing, the more violence-oriented variant is just a metal club shaped like a closed fan to sneak into places you're not supposed to have weapons, which is a lot less cool than fan combat but does mean that they were an awful lot like the Edo-era equivalent of putting a brick in your purse

— August 23rd is Temari Nara's birthday! We compiled a list of 23 facts about her in celebration of her special day.

🌵 DAY 1:

Temari is the oldest and tallest female of her trio and her generation. She was born on August 23rd three years before Sakura and Ino's generation and she’s 169cm tall (with one extra inch added by her sandals) according to her two official adult character design provided by Studio Pierrot.

🌵DAY 2:

Temari is the only female character of her generation to use a nature transformation: Wind Release, the most unusual nature transformation.

But in further side stories she's not the only one. Sakura (in the novel Fire Release) and Ino (in the anime Fire Release) are the only females to use nature transformation jutsu.

🌵DAY 3:

For Boruto: Naruto the Movie, Studio Pierrot had initially thought about Temari and Sakura having dango together in their favorite Dango Shop while waiting for Ino according to their sketches.

Temari's hairstyle also has three pigtails instead of four in this early design.

However, they changed it to Sakura and Ino waiting for Temari for the final movie.

🌵DAY 4:

Temari was the first kunoichi of her generation to be promoted to jōnin rank between the ages of 16 and 19 and she outranked every kunoichi of Konoha. Later, Sakura was promoted to jōnin at the same age as Temari, becoming the second and only ones of their generation.

Up to Boruto: Naruto Next Generations, Sakura Haruno, Temari Nara, Shikamaru Nara, Neji Hyūga and Rock Lee are the only jōnin of that generation in Konohagakure.

🌵DAY 5:

According to official sources, databooks and novels, Temari is the best Wind Release user of Sunagakure and the possibly the world at 22 years old. She had displayed a several Wind Release techniques and mastery of her Giant Fan in the story, even leading the Wind Release Team in the Fourth Shinobi World War.

Temari becomes one of the kunoichi to be considered “the best” at her field, Wind Release and tessenjutsu manipulation, along with being Sakura hailed as the best medical ninja and strongest kunoichi in the world and Ino implied to be the best telepath of her clan.

🌵DAY 6:

Unlike her friends Sakura and Ino, Masashi Kishimoto didn't assign Temari any flower or have any designated flower related to her name, while Sakura Haruno represents the cherry blossoms and Ino is compared to bush clovers.

However, Temari is very interested in plants according to her profile and her hobby is to appreciate them.

🌵DAY 7:

Temari is the third most popular kunoichi of Naruto according to the official manga character popularity polls during serialization.

Adding all the polls together, she obtained 3.711 points, earning the third place overall among the female characters. Link to the third databook character popularity poll.

She was also voted 38th most popular Naruto character in Naruto Worldwide Character Popularity Poll NARUTOP99 and the 8th most popular kunoichi with 13.044 daily votes. Link to the poll results.

🌵DAY 8:

Temari is the most experienced kunoichi of her trio and second of her generation. She completed 42 missions in total by age 19 and is also the only one to have completed an S-rank, which are exclusive to jōnin.

🌵DAY 9:

In her profile from the second and third databooks, Tenten desires to fight Temari, to whom she lost in the Chūnin Exams, and Sakura, the disciple of her idol, Tsunade. Both Temari and Sakura are considered the strongest kunoichi of the generation.

One the other hand, Temari wishes a rematch against Shikamaru, who she almost beats in the Chūnin Exams Finals.

🌵DAY 10:

Temari is the second kunoichi with the most outfit and hair changes of her generation, especially in the manga.

She’s known for her different dresses and kimonos in different colors with a belt to carry her Giant Fan, fishnets and her Sunagakure headband on her forehead. She doesn't have an official representative color as her outfits are lavender, black or blue. Her final design and official color now is blue.

Her hair has also changed throughout the eras from four pigtails to two ponytails.

🌵DAY 11:

Temari is the only kunoichi of her generation to have won a battle all by herself in the manga. She effortlessly defeated Tenten in the Chūnin Exams preliminaries, contrary to Sakura who defeated Sasori with Chiyo.

In side stories, Sakura won her first solo battle in her novel Sakura Hiden against Kido Tsumiki.

🌵DAY 12:

In part 1 of the manga, Masashi Kishimoto ranked Temari as the strongest kunoichi according to the databooks with the highest statistics.

By part 2, she was surpassed by Sakura Haruno and moved to second strongest. This feat continues until today.

🌵DAY 13:

In Gaara Hiden, it's revealed that Temari comes from the Kazekage Clan but the crest or the history of it is unknown. In Sunagakure, the Kazekage is inherited from parent to child.

🌵DAY 14:

Temari and Shikamaru are the married couple with the highest rank in Konohagakure with both parties obtaining the jōnin rank. This happened when Shikamaru was promoted to jōnin in the Blank Period.

This couple outranks the rest of canon marriages.

🌵DAY 15:

Besides her active job as a ninja of Sunagakure, Temari has also actively contributed to the village in other fields. When Gaara became Kazekage, Temari was his bodyguard and advisor, and also proctor of the Chūnin Exams. Now she's the Ambassador of Konohagakure and Sunagakure.

Similarly, Ino used to help her parents at Yamanaka Flowers from time to time and now she runs the shop with her own family; while Sakura has worked in Konoha Hospital since she was 16 and is now the Head of the Medical Department and was also a member of the Cypher Corps.

🌵DAY 16:

Out of 700 chapters of Naruto, Temari appears in 99. Link to the manga count.

She's the 4th kunoichi of her generation with the most screen time and was also the second female to be introduced in the manga.

🌵DAY 17:

Temari is one of the two females of her generation to have a summoning, the other being Sakura.

Kamatari is a weasel based on the Japanese yōkai, Kamaitachi. The name is a combination of the words "itachi" meaning weasel, and "kama" meaning sickle. This spirit rides on dust winds and wields a sickle to attack humans. Her signature jutsu is called Sickle Weasel, in honor to this creature.

🌵DAY 18:

Despite having less and less screen time as the years pass and new side stories are written, Temari filled a very important role during Boruto: Naruto the Movie, written by Masashi Kishimoto.

She was the second most important kunoichi, saving multiple people from the falling debris using a combo jutsu of her Sickle Weasel and Sakura's Cherry Blossom Clash that saved many civilians sitting in the rows of the Chūnin Exams Arena. Her priority was also prevent casualties.

🌵DAY 19:

During the Fourth Shinobi World War, Temari was assigned to the Fourth Unit, the Long-range battle unit. That group was in charge of providing a link to the Intelligence Division and support the other units as their shield. It included Chōji Akimichi and Shikamaru Nara.

Moreover, Temari led her own team of Wind Release users.

🌵DAY 20:

Temari is the only kunoichi of her generation to be in the cover art of Boruto: Naruto Next Generations manga. She was present in chapter 3 with her brothers.

🌵DAY 21:

Temari is the only kunoichi to be stronger than her husband according to the databooks. Despite losing the match against Shikamaru due to his strategy, in the latest statistics Temari outclasses him in everything except in genjutsu and intelligence, but remains superior to him in skills.

She's the only wife that could defeat her husband.

🌵DAY 22:

Temari's weapon is a giant iron fan (鉄扇, tessen) which she always uses to fight. This style is called tessenjutsu and is a branch of bukijutsu, the art of weaponry. She can create wind storms, protect herself from attacks and glide with it. It's based on samurai weapons during the feudal Japan.

🌵DAY 23:

In the new era, Temari spends her time mostly doing missions for Konohagakure as one of their few jōnin. She also continues her job as the official Ambassador between Konohagakure and Sunagakure and she’s often invited to galas or banquets are a member of Sunagakure's society and traveling as a diplomat.

Temari has been seen training the new Team 10 for the Chūnin Exams and has also taught Shikadai in tessenjutsu and Wind Release techniques.

Hallmarks of the Season

Katara hated travelling during the holidays. It was too crowded, people were too impatient, and the frazzled staff had been abused to the point that even asking for directions seemed to push some of them to the point of tears. Even travelling first class wasn't enough to offset the horrors of holiday travel. Still, as Katara exited baggage claim at long last, and saw her father and brother waiting for her in driver hats and holding a banner, she felt the annoyance of the last 15 hours melt away.

"Dad! Sokka!" She threw herself at them and happily got swallowed up in the tangle of affection.

"Welcome home, sweetheart," Hakoda said, pulling his children close in a crushing hug.

"Dad!" Sokka protested. "You see me every day! Stop trying to break me in half." Hakoda ignored his son and gave them both one last squeeze before releasing them. He took the handle of Katara's suitcase and lead the way out of the airport.

"I'm so glad you were able to make it this year," Hakoda said to Katara. "It's been too long since we've had you with us in person for the holidays. Your grandmother is going to be thrilled to see you."

"And this mysterious boyfriend you're hiding from us," Sokka cast his sister an arch look. Katara just rolled her eyes.

"First of all, he's my fiancé," she reminded him. "And he's not mysterious. You have all met him."

"Video calls and an hour of lunch hardly counts as meeting him," Sokka snorted. "We've barely gotten to vet him. It seems like every time we're supposed to spend time with him, something comes up. Wasn't he supposed to fly out with you? What's his excuse this time?" Katara's face colored with anger.

"There's an issue with an investor," Katara told her brother. "They were supposed to sign the deal two weeks ago, but now they're dragging their feet. If the money isn't transferred, it's going to affect payroll, and we're trying to avoid that. It's a miracle I was able to get away."

"Perks of being engaged to the owner?" Hakoda grinned broadly and winked at Katara.

"Yeah...well..." Katara's shoulders went up to her ears bashfully. "Well, anyway, Zuko's uncle is there to help get things settled. He promised to have Zuko on the plane here in four days, no matter what, so he'll be here." Sokka scoffed disbelievingly. Katara shoved him lightly. They'd reached Hakoda's car then, and the subject switched from the likelihood of Katara's fiancé showing up to who got the front seat. Katara won, and Sokka sulked in the backseat for the entire way home.

Katara had only been able to come home a handful of times over the last five years, but every time she stepped through the door of her childhood home, it was like she'd never been away. Kanna, her grandmother hurried out of the kitchen, covered in flour, to greet her prodigal granddaughter in a flurry of hugs and kisses. A pair of small, but heavy feet rushed down the stairs, and Katara had just a moment to prepare herself before her niece launched herself into her aunt's arms.

"Auntie!" Katara caught her with only a bit of a stumble and laughed as she hugged her niece tight.

"You've gotten so big, Sesi!" she exclaimed. Sesi squirmed out of Katara's grip and pulled her bottom lip down to show of a row of missing teeth.

"I lost a tooth today!" Sesi exclaimed, jabbing her finger at an empty spot that seemed fresher than the rest. "It came out in my tessenjutsu class!" Katara ooed and awed to the little girl's content. Then Sesi grabbed Katara's hand to drag her off to her room and show her all the new toys and games she'd gotten since Katara had last visited, but Sokka stopped her.

"Sesi, Auntie's had a long day," he said. "And it's past your bedtime."

"But, Daddy-" Sesi protested.

"She'll still be here tomorrow," Sokka promised. "And if you're really good, maybe she can even take you to school in the morning." The reminder that she still had to go to school did not have the placating result Sokka was hoping for, but still Sesi went off to her room with little more than a pout. Hakoda took the opportunity to take Katara's bag up to the guest room. Kanna ushered her grandchildren off to the kitchen to fix them a meal.

"I hope you're hungry," Kanna said.

"After a day of airport food, I'm starved," Katara assured her grandmother.

"Really?" Sokka raised an eyebrow. "They didn't feed you in first class?" Katara rolled her eyes and huffed.

"First class on that airline just means more legroom, and even that just barely." She sat at the table, across from her brother and thanked Kanna for the bowl of stew. "The food on the plane was actually not bad, but they served it like two hours into the flight, and it wasn't even that much food."

"Well, you can have as much as you want," Kanna promised. "I'm going to clean up and head out."

"You don't have to do that, Gran-Gran," Sokka said. "I'll take care of it."

"Are you sure?" Kanna asked. "I know you've had a long day, and it's no trouble."

"It's the least I can do," Sokka insisted. "For taking care of Sesi and cooking and stuff." Kanna chuckled and kissed Sokka's forehead.

"In that case, I'll head out." Kanna stopped at Katara's side and kissed her next. "I'll be back nice and early tomorrow. I want to hear all about your job...and this young man I've been hearing so much about."

"Absolutely," Katara promised. "I have lots of pictures." Hakoda came back down the stairs as Kanna was bundling up.

"Are you leaving so soon, Kanna?" he asked, giving her a hug.

"I want to let Umiak out for a while before I go to bed," Kanna told him. "I'll be back in the morning." Kanna said her last goodnights and hurried out to her car. Hakoda went to join his children at the table.

"Sesi was a little wound up," Hakoda explained as he fixed himself a bowl of stew. "I told her a quick bedtime story."

"Sesi is getting so big!" Katara exclaimed, turning to Sokka. "How can you stand it?"

"It's tough," Sokka sighed. "I feel like she was just my little baby ten minutes ago, and now she's losing teeth and going to school. She'll be in first grade next year."

"Yeah, these days fly by." Hakoda looked at his two children with a melancholy smile. "Then she'll be all grown up and carving out her own little piece of the world, and making you feel the proudest you've ever been." Katara reached out and squeezed her fathers hand. Sokka stroked his chin thoughtfully.

"Sesi looks more and more like Yue everyday," he mused sadly.

"Yeah, but her personality is all you," Katara laughed.

"Perfect!" Sokka grinned at Katara. "She'll be beautiful and funny!"

The trio stayed up well into the night, catching up, reminiscing and cleaning the kitchen. It was well past the time Hakoda and Sokka usually went to bed by the time they turned in, but eventually the day caught up with them, and they said their goodnights. Katara had been put into the spare bedroom. It was small, but cozy, with a narrow futon and a warm glowing bedside table. This was where Gran-Gran or any other visiting relatives would sleep. It was strange for Katara to be there now, but her childhood bedroom was now where Sesi slept. It was jarring, and the first time that coming to visit her family didn't quite feel like coming home, but Katara found herself glad that her brother and niece had moved back in with Hakoda. She had worried about her father when she was away, although Sokka and his family had never lived far. She was grateful that they had each other now. And she was glad to be back.

There's a time when she has to put away her usual big fan as a sign of trust during diplomatic visit

But when there's a sudden attack during the meeting (or betrayal)..

They didn't know that she's NEVER unarmed.

Do you think WHY she always wear an obi?? To keep her tessen.

I'm certain she wear it when she's asleep. She wear it at home.. anywhere.. anytime.. even her wedding dress has obi with it.

Of course kimono will use obi. What I meant.. since I don't know what she wore in her wedding, and if she wore the modern dress instead of traditional one, I BET THERE MUST BE AN OBI WITH IT BECAUSE THAT'S HOW TEMARI WORKS

Kankuro can play "The Seven Roles"

Suna scores 2/5 on population, isn't it? So I think they don't just rely at combat approach, they also rely at disguises for infiltration.

It just happened that Kank is good at this thing

So at first, Kank's puppet disguised as him, but what if the roles swapped? Kank disguised as a puppet instead?

And then he expands it to another different roles, depending on the country

He always use his facepaint during the mission as a shinobi, so nobody knows what his real face actually look like

People there just like: Oh, this guy is just.. a guy. I don't really care anyway.

The reason he's barely doing that is either because: "Puppet is love, puppet is life" or the preparation is such a hassle + it really takes time, he needs his siblings' help to make it faster

But when you ask if he can do that? Yes, yes he can :)

Gaara understanding crabs..

(especially coconut crab like in the way some people refers them as terrifying, monstrous, etc.)

Observing their stoic appearance and behavior, studying them, understanding them, liking them, hyperfixates on them.

Then when he got back from the mission and seeing his cacti collection again, he'll be m.. nostalgic like oh it's been so long, remember when my past self obsessed with them? *proceeds to hyperfixates on cacti again*

I personally like the idea of gaar trying to be friends with the crab. Maybe also with slime molds. Or with any "expressionless" living being.

Oh.. so that's why. That's makes sense actually.

The reason he can get along with plants instead of other kind of animals might be because of Shukaku's chakra. Like the way his chakra scared akamaru the dog. Animals can runaway, but cacti can't. I don't understand how his cacti felt around gaar, but I'm sure they're still alive because gaar taking care of them.

And I still have no idea how the animals would act around him after shukaku's extraction. I want him to be friends with the crabs so much

Mood Board if Disney ever makes a Japanese-inspired musical

IDK why, but I think it'd be so cool if we got a male protagonist proficient in tessenjutsu, given that fans are seen as purely feminine in western culture.

Note: Some of the anime I included have western influences (ie Naruto), which is obviously something a western company should avoid when making an adaptation to a non-western culture.

i like to think splinter taught leo tessenjutsu but never gave him the tessen out of the thinking that leo would logically become the leader of the team but leo had a clear attachment to the swords and he's still grieving over karai

and then when april joined, she fit into the hole Karai left in his heart much more perfectly than Leo and fulfilled an older sister position, making her an ideal candidate to help lead the team
