“Let’s go to Wonderland.”
∘₊✧──────✧₊∘
Yuhua “Yu” Wei (魏 瑜花)
A strange boy from another world who “transmigrated” to Twisted Wonderland. Without magic, a monster to partner with, or even being old enough to enroll, he was taken in as Crewel's assistant. He often gets caught up in the student body's troubles, however.
∘₊✧──────✧₊∘
Known Facts
Birthday: January 27 (Aquarius)
Age: <16
Height: 160 cm
Dominant hand: Right
Hobbies: Dancing, reading, solitaire
Pet peeves: Obnoxious students with no intelligence
Favorite food: Anything sweet and refreshing with fruits
Least favorite food: Mushrooms
∘₊✧──────✧₊∘
Known Personality Aspects
Yu's outward persona can change depending on who he is with. Around teachers and respected upperclassmen (so authority figures), he is respectful and earnest. Around close friends, he is more outspoken and brash, but also playful and encouraging. Around strangers, he is meek but affable when spoken to. So on and so forth. His behavior will change depending on how the other person treats him, however.
One thing that stays consistent is his anxiety; although he does try to hide it, his naturally cowardly nature will pop out from time to time. Because of this and his poor self-image, he is often willing to subtly use others for his own benefit if he does not/cannot do something by himself.
However, that does not negate his temper, which often comes out explosively and violently when he is pushed to his limits. In fact, his self-hatred makes his anger even more potent. Be prepared for a barrage of insults and curse words should you step out of line around Yu.
∘₊✧──────✧₊∘
System & Other Status Effects
If you have ever read SVSSS (which I have not and don't plan on), you will recall that the transmigrating protagonist has a digital system that aids him. Yu has something similar; when there is no one around, he can access these holographic screens that inform him of upcoming missions, events, and his relationships with others. He also receives notifications related to all of the above.
Another problem he has to deal with is that after each Overblot battle, he is sort of knocked out and forced to watch the memories of the Overblotter, who also gets to see some of his memories. He doesn't really know why so he sort of just chalks it up to the System treating everything like a video game.
∘₊✧──────✧₊∘
Trivia
Much like how the teachers have their own uniforms, Yu also has his own magic-enforced "dorm uniform." It seems to take inspiration from a Far East fairytale, where a young maiden was aided by her late mother in the form of a beautiful, golden carp. Yu wears a locket that is enchanted to switch him into his dorm uniform when he opens it.
He typically wears what looks like the standard school uniform because 1) it goes under his labcoat in the classroom due to safety procedures, and 2) it makes him stand out less.
Floyd calls him “Li'l Koi.” Other students will frequently refer to him as “the TA.”
Although he isn't a student and thus cannot really join any clubs, he frequently visits the Film Research Club.

Here’s the thing: I knew if my roommate, boyfriend, and I wrote fanfic or something together it would be something strange and beautiful and terrible. Every so often we bounce this one idea back and forth that took a Development last night, and I’ll be remiss if I don’t TRY to write it down:
The Rani is still kicking. She’s fine— She has a few different little robot companion types, a few little pets, and a rotating cast of people to tinker with and fuck up. Recently, she goes “huh, you know who I kind of miss?[neg] The Master. What a little bitch. He’s probably aggressively easy to genetically recreate.”.
The Doctor and the Master are off having a little bitch off somewhere. TARDISes parked somewhere else. Sick. The Master’s TARDIS is presumably abandoned in the Rani’s head, and the Doctor’s was convenient to locate alongside it. Rani takes them. She DOES recreate the Master, in a way. He’s got his own face and something definitely went wrong. This man is a cartoon villain going through an identity crisis. This man is loaded with memories and trauma that isn’t exactly his own while he Learns How To Do. He’s also Griffin McElroy. Something went wrong. Meet the Griff!ster.
He both leaves and sort of is let go by the Rani when she’s like “oh you came out wrong. and I DO still hate your company even when you’re not a clone. neat. you can leave.” He does. Presumably with the Master’s TARDIS. The Griff!ster then happens upon two human men who’s brother is on vacation. He doesn’t quite adopt them, but Justin and Travis also don’t… Leave him alone. The Griff!ster wants to do something fucked up and evil for his own sake, and Justin and Travis redirect him in a desperate attempt to keep people safe, but also Let This Guy Cook: Hey man, what if we just like… Turn Chicago into a giant ball pit?
Meanwhile the Doctor and the Master are just… In Heathrow Airport (and other various airports and bus stops). In one of the worst human inventions ever: airports and commercial airplanes. Time is moving slowly and linearly and everything keeps getting delayed and redirected. They are now exhausted in a way they’ve never experienced, and going a little insane, and are entirely reliant on the other to keep from doing that so they can go and retrieve their fucking time machines. They have to talk.
We haven’t gotten to the solutions part yet HOWEVER. Roommate and I are both fully committed to actually writing this even as a little house project. I’m so tickled by it.

MUNK’S CRASH COURSE TO BROWSING ARCHIVE OF OUR OWN (commonly abbreviated as ao3)
After what seems like a lot of confusion around ao3 and how it works I decided to make a quick little guide on how to filter and general tips to improve your reading experience! This guide works on the assumption of wanting to read fanfics rather than create your own, so it won’t be covering those aspects.
This guide is also written for someone who's never set their foot on the website or are just dipping their toes into reading fic - hence me perhaps over-explaining some things that might seem given to a lot of avid readers.
First — the obvious step. Surf into archiveofourown.org and if it’s your very first time you’ll land at this prompt:
To move on to the page you will have to agree/consent to these terms. It is up to yourself to read them or disregard them, but in able to move on you must agree to the terms ao3 lay out for you.
For the sake of this crash course I will assume that you agree and after checking the box and doing so you will find yourself at this page:
(under a read more for length)
Now we get into the nitty gritty of things! This is the landing page for ao3. It has a running feed of the archive’s own news and tweets as well as a prompt to get invited and start creating yourself. Disregarding all of that for now — we’re here to read, aren’t we? — let’s get to it.
Hovering over the fandoms bar up top leads us to this drop-down menu. Clicking one of these categories will bring up a page where all tagged fandoms within the given category are sorted first numerically and then alphabetically. From here you can find almost any given fandom as well as see how many works are posted for it. I’ll be using Final Fantasy XIV as an example as I’m familiar with it, so we’ll go to Video Games, press the F in the following menu and find it in the list of available fandoms.
Clicking it brings us to the ‘homepage’ for all the works tagged with Final Fantasy XIV. By default it is sorted by ‘time updated’, meaning that everytime you click a fandom it’ll default to showing the latest posted works. It will look a little something like this (works and authors censored just in case):
Now, you could realistically stop here and begin reading fics that catch your eye. There’s a lot of fun to be had in just exploring and clicking around! Using my own work as example, fics will look like so when they are posted:
The four squares are symbol warnings. Clicking these will bring up a menu that explains in detail what each warning entails so I won’t go into depth but in order from top left to right its
Content Rating (in the example G for general audiences)
Relationships, pairings, orientations (in the example M/M, male/male relationships)
Content warnings (in the example the author chose not to warn or specify warnings)
Is the work finished (in the example, green check for yes)
You’ll find all you need to know about a given fic in this. The fandoms listed, a summary of the fic, the tags the author has chosen to use, language, word count, chapters — all self explanatory.
But ao3s strength lies in its robust filtering system so let's look at how we can filter for the fics we want to get at. The sort and filter column will become your best friend!
Here are all the options to tailor your reading experience to your tastes, specifically. There’s one section for include, meaning that all the searches returned after pressing sort and filter will have the things you checked in these options.
There’s also an exclude section, where the searches returned will be filtered to not show the things you choose to exclude.
The first thing is the sort by, meaning that fics will be sorted by whatever you deem important. For example you could sort by date updated to find the latest, freshest fics — or by bookmarks, to see what other fans enjoy. Want to find the longest fics in your fandom because you have the day of? Sort by word count! Remember that playing around with this can net you a wide range of different fics.
Now lets say we’re on the hunt for a specific, narrow kind of reading experience —
Every drop-down menu gives me a wide range of options for things I specifically want to include in my search. I want the fics to be aimed toward general audiences, from Final Fantasy XIV and I also want them to include the character G’raha Tia.
I also want to include the hurt/comfort trope in my searches so I go down to Other tags to include and type:
A dropdown bar will appear with the tags you can choose from and thankfully hurt/comfort is a common trope, so I pick it and find it listed under my tags to include.
And then I want to exclude some things! With the same process I click and open up the menus, excluding what I don’t want to appear in the search. I won’t show examples of what to exclude because I don’t want to start a war, but the process is the same.
And then we find more options (for the sake of the screenshot, i’ve opened all dropdown menus):
Here we can narrow it down even further! You can choose to include or exclude crossovers, if you want to see complete works only or if you want to see only those that are in progress as well as tailor what word count you want.
For example this search will return only works that are between 1000 and 10000 words. It’s usually not necessary but the option is there and good to know about.
The language drop-down is pretty self-explanatory — leaving it blank will return searches in all languages available, choosing a specific language will narrow the search to only that one language.
Once you’re done and feel confident in your selection we click sort and filter and let the magic happen! Enjoy!
Remember that you are responsible for curating your own reading experience - make sure to read the tags on the works you click and exclude the things you do not want to read about. Use the back button liberally if you're uncomfortable with a fic! Operate on the etiquette of don’t like, don’t read.
If you liked the fic, make sure to press the kudos button at the bottom and leave a comment if you feel inclined! Comments are what keeps many authors going - even something as simple as 'I loved this' and nothing more can make an authors day.
Ao3 responsibly and let curiosity lead your way - check out authors, find tropes that speak to you and discover new takes on your favorite characters/settings/media.
