THE BOOK IS A GO!
Transgender History out 2025
Good morning—GOOD NEWS! Going on 2 years ago, I published my article in Scientific American about #transgenger + #hormone history 🗃️🧪🏳️‍⚧️. I finished the book in Oct, and my editor just wrote to say she loves it and it will publish next winter!
This book almost didn’t happen. It was so hard to write. It *hurt* to write. Watching the news and reading history, it felt the same—rise of fascism and attacks on minorities and LGBTQ. But it’s done, it is written.
THE INTERMEDIARIES tells the story of that science—itself often strange and remarkable—as well as the man, his band of revolutionaries, and the Institute for Sexual Science, both center of the homosexual and trans community and base of operations for the first LGBTQ rights movement of the 20th century.
Sexual and gender nonconformists, what Hirschfeld called the intermediaries, had a right to live, a right to thrive. They also had a right to joy. Science would lead the way, but this history unfolds as an interwar thriller—patients and physicians risking their lives to be seen and heard even as Hitler began his rise to power. They faced abuse, blackmail, and political machinations; they responded with secret publishing campaigns, leaflet drops, pro-homosexual propaganda, and alignments with rebel factions of Berlin’s literati. It’s a story about pioneers. And about hope.
And it all started here:

🏳️‍⚧️ We're trying to raise $200,000 for LGBTQ+ youth programs before the end of the year! 🏳️‍🌈 Wanna help?
As they grow up in a world that wants to keep them down, LGBTQ+ youth are fighting to be themselves. But we believe young, queer people shouldn’t have to be "brave" just to exist.
By making a donation to support our programs, you're showing that you believe in the better world that we can create together.
Over the past couple years, the support we've gotten from some amazing donors has enabled us to support queer youth in SO many ways, like:
Granting LGBTQ+ students more than $1.2 million to imagine and create their own safe spaces and resources in schools across the US and Canada through 50 States, 50 Grants.
Creating award-winning content series educating LGBTQ+ youth on safe sex ed, inclusive terminology, careers in STEM, as well as tons more educational and mental health resources.
Handing LGBTQ+ youth the mic to advocate for themselves — at national conferences, on our award-winning Twitch vodcast Perfectly Queer, on social media, and in interviews with major news outlets...
...and so much more that you can see on itgetsbetter.org!
🟣 If you believe in "better" the way we do and want to help us keep doing this work to uplift, empower, and connect LGBTQ+ youth around the world, you can make a donation here!

nimona somehow feels like the PERFECT transgender allegory. the titular character is a trans youth, scared of the world for hating them, finding refuge in their newfound friend. a friend who was the byproduct if the homophobic and religious system that ended up framing him as a threat and casting him out - and, coincidentally, a gay man. they both become allies in this fight against the system that hunts them down, but problems arise when the mc's new friend buys into the demonization of their past, and a twisted version of their motive.
but what's so interesting to me are the LAYERS of metaphor. gloreth casting nimona out like the religious establishments in the real world betraying trans folks and claiming them as sinners and groomers, the influence of public hate on the future generations and the breaking of the cycle at the end of the movie, the tension between bal and nimona when he asks awkward questions about her identity that reflect confused but supportive friends, the whole "What happens if you don't shift" convo, and ESPECIALLY the hints of passive suicidal ideation in nimona's speech...it kills me. this movie is so wonderful, this is what we mean when we say we want good trans rep.

Every now and then I re-reread Harry Potter and just get So Mad about jkr taking her fame from telling a story about a kid whose "weird" qualities gave him a community and using her platform to be petunia dursley
wants kids she doesn't like in the closet (or cupboard, whatever)
/honestly actually just stay out of sight and make no noise and pretend you don't exist
screeching about stuff being "unnatural"
oh that person is dressed outside of cultural norms they're a freak
maybe if we just try hard enough we can squash your innate self out of you
Like you think it's hyperbolically villanous behaviour and then it's like no actually this is a self portrait

I worked on Becoming Who We Are as a co-editor and artist! It's a great book. Please consider backing the Kickstarter to preorder a copy, and tell your friends about it!

I love all my trans siblings, and all my trans brothers who are like the little fairies that surround me, and help me be a strong, confident boy <3
Navigating this world as a trans person does not have to be a path that you tread alone. You will always have your trans sibs, peers, parents, and elders to guide and support you :)
I know I need to hear these words some days, so I want everyone to feel the love :3

Not so gentle reminder that I do NOT support or condone JK Rowling or H*rry P*tter whatsoever. If you have an HP themed blog or show off your dolls in H*gwarts clothes and interact with me, you’re immediately getting blocked. She’s a terf, period.
