Hey, so I’m getting phil into position tonight after my stream and gonna lay the TNT. IMPORTANT NOTE FOR NOW TIL TOMORROW: PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE TRY NOT TO BLOW ANYTHING UP NEAR LMANBERG OR YOU WILL DETONATE EVERYTHING

Treatment:

8:30pm GMT we all start roleplaying and hanging out

9pm the battle begins

Dream explains how Schlatt will not be here for the war and we will instead have to fight him

After a valiant fight Dream tells how even if we kill Schlatt it doesn’t matter because he’s already got what he wants from him

Dream leads everyone to Schlatt’s hide-out and we find him drinking and smoking

Schlatt is locked away in a tiny room with only a lever and bottles of alcohol

he is drunk. Coughing and spluttering as the gang enter

he is immediately pissed at fundy’s betrayal. Saying how fundy was like a son to him. This pisses off wilbur and Wilbur asks Sch [image cuts off]

Schlatt takes a puff of his cigarette, muscles bulging and agrees to his execution. He explains how when he dies, democracy die [image cuts off]

Wilbur nods and draws his sword to kill Schlatt. He stops and looks at Tommy. He explains how if anyone kills Schlatt it should [image cuts off]

Tommy steps forward, dream’s crossbow in hand and aims at schlatt’s head

at this point Schlatt beings to violently cough and splutter. He claims he’s having a heart attack. His character stumbles and pul [image cuts off]

the lever is hooked up to a command block “/say I never liked this hell hole anyway”

Schlatt has a heart attack and fucking dies, finally muttering “enjoy manberg, dream”

manberg is reclaimed. The gang head off to the podium of the now ravaged land of lmanberg

Tommy steps up to the microphone and thanks everyone for their help in this accomplishment

however he decides he doesn’t want to rule. Until he has the disks back from dream, he has unfinished business and cannot rul [image cuts off]

he hands the microphone back to Wilbur. Giving him the presidency

Wilbur steps up and thanks him. Wilbur does a small speech where he renames manberg to lmanburg. He changes the flag to [image cuts off]

However, he feels he is not without sin. And begrudgingly hands the presidency to Tubbo. Saying Tubbo is the only person who [image cuts off]

Tubbo accepts and steps to the podium, offering a new era of peace in lmanberg

Wilbur walks away

Wilbur goes to the button room and stares at it once more wondering if it even works

he decides to press it

philza joins the game

philza asks wilbur why he’s doing this. He expresses disappointment and tells him to step away from the button

Wilbur waits. Seems convinced and begins to leave after a bit of coercion

before he leaves he turns back to the button.

“Phil I’m a traitor to this nation. I have nothing here and I’ll never have anything again. have you heard of a famous phrase uttere [image cuts off]

“no?”

“It was never meant to be..”

Wilbur presses the button detonating 8 stacks of tnt under lmanberg

MEANWHILE

While Wilbur is gone the gang start discussing who the traitor could be

Once Philza joins the game to everyone’s shock, Techno beings explaining how he guesses he fits the role of the traitor

Techno explains how he’s not really a traitor, just a guy who hates the government.

Techno beings setting up soul sand on Jack Manifolds old home

As soon as the TNT is detonated during the chaos technoblade completes the withers and unleashes them into the world, atta [image cuts off]

A huge fight breaks out amongst the L’Manberg people and the withers, with technoblade trying to slow down the gang as muc [image cuts off]

Phil joins the VC and helps

Everyone fights until the withers are gone

Script 2: January 4 - New L'manberg festival (10:43 in the video) Google Docs

The festival is happening. Fundy, Tubbo, Quackity, Ranboo, Niki, and anyone else that is generally around lmanburg can attend. Everyone starts streaming early for the festival. Before the festival starts, Quackity Tubbo and Fundy (and ranboo? I’m not sure who was there originally), have a meeting about how they’re going to kill Dream.

They talk about how Dream trusts Tubbo so Tubbo is going to have to be the one to do it. That they’ve become sort of friends since Tommy was exiled. Tubbo agrees, still slightly doubtful that it would work. Tubbo says that Dream agreed to show up with no armor to for the first time ever, honor lmanburgs laws.

The meeting ends and they start the festival, talking about how Dream said he would be a little late.

Tommy and Techno at this point have been planning how they’re going to ruin the festival (and get back Tommy’s disc from Dream). They know that Dream will show up, but they don’t know how they’ll fight him without him escaping. (Ranboo finds them on the outskirts of lmanburg and tells them that Dream agreed to show up in no armor? Possibly?) That sparks that they can hide around lmanburg and ambush Dream when he’s at the festival. Tommy and Techno improv and mess around while trying to build an “ambush spot” (all of this is sort of unimportant to the plot so can be adjusted to make funnier/better streams for those two)

Tommy and Techno start streaming about 30 minutes after the others.

After some festival activities have been done, Dream shows up in full armor, placing obsidian again in a wall formation. Everyone sees him and runs over confused about what’s happening.

They hop in a call with dream (techno and tommy join too but tell each other to be quiet before joining.) Dream starts screaming about what Tommy did and how he really screwed up this time (tommy is kind of afraid and is looking at techno for assurance), and everyone is confused about what Tommy did, especially tubbo. Dream yells about the fact that Tommy destroyed the community house, the longest standing structure on the server, and how he has to pay for it. Quackity and the others don’t believe it and decide to go look with Dream. (Techno and Tommy follow stealthily behind (invis), no one should see them).

Sapnap and anyone else from the original Dream SMP can log on now or already be on and come over to see. (Awesam, Callahan, George(probably not), Sapnap, BadBoyHalo, Punz)

They stand in front of the shattered remains and everyone is shocked that Tommy would do this, and upset. Everyone is insisting that Tommy really screwed up and that it’s horrible.

Tubbo agrees but insists that he and lmanburg had nothing to do with it. Dream says that as long as Tubbo has one of the discs, he has everything to do with Tommy. Tubbo seems shocked and thinks about what Dream said. All of the Dream SMP original members agree and are talking about how he should give it so they can burn it once and for all. Tubbo is reluctant but seems to agree that Tommy keeps doing things that would put lmanburg in danger, so he doesn’t want association.

He seems like he about to give the disc, so Tommy reveals himself (techno too) and gets into a screaming match with Tubbo about it.

--Tommy and tubbo fill in what happens here, but it’s a big argument and fight probably mostly improv-

Eventually after both nearly dying, Tommy realizes that he’s fighting his best friend and stops. Tubbo is angry and gives the disc quickly to Dream, saying that it’s just a stupid disc. Tommy is hurt by that but realizes that he’s been blinded and has lost friends because of it. Tommy realizes that Dream now has both of his discs, and that they’re back at square one.

Dream has an evil speech about how Tubbo is an idiot and that he never should have given him the disc. That Tubbo was never the president of L’manburg, but that everyone else had more control than him of his own country, even Dream. That he’s the worst president because he was no president at all. Expose Ranboo as a traitor that has been working with Techno and Tommy, and that he can’t even keep control of his own people. Give Tubbo the book with proof. That l’manburg is weaker than it’s ever been, and that the only thing stopping Dream from completely destroying l’manburg was the fact that Tubbo had the discs and so Dream had to befriend him.

Now there’s nothing stopping Dream from completely obliterating l’manburg. Everyone seems shocked and tries to talk Dream down, but Dream screams and tells everyone to shut up. Everyone goes completely silent. Dream asks Techno if he has any withers left. Techno responds basically like “oh do III” because he has so many.

--Techno should add more here so he has more of a role-

Dream announces that tonight is the final night of l’manburg forever. That he and Techno will finish the job that Wilbur started, and that l’manburg will be blown all the way to bedrock at (TIME, the next day). He tells everyone to say their last goodbyes, and to not try and stop him because Techno and him will kill every last one of them.

Dream leaves.

Everyone is left in shock, (maybe techno has some funny monologue here like it’s awkward that I just left him there with everyone or something)

No one knows what to say. They realize that Dream has gone completely insane and that he has to be stopped. (techno is gone by now) They realize that Dream made a mistake by telling them the time, and they decide that they will all plan to work together and stop them. If all of the server fights together they can beat Techno and Dream. They get hyped about it and Tommy and Tubbo agree to fight together, despite having 1 canon life, that they’re willing to put their lives on the line for l’manburg. They kind of have a reunion.

--Possibly Tommy leaves or ends here?-

Quackity seems blood thirsty and wants to punish ranboo for conspiring with them and being a traitor. Tubbo disagrees and quackity and tubbo get into an argument, Quackity insists that he HAS to execute him because he was a traitor. Tubbo gets mad and flips out on Quackity insisting that he’s not going to be like schlatt and execute him next to his own festival decorations (call back), that they need to ALL be together, ALL of them, otherwise they will lose to Techno and Dream. As long as he agrees to fight, he will fight with them. Quackity still seems to disagree, Tubbo puts his foot down and mentions what Dream said. That everyone else always pushed him around, but no HE’S the president, and his word is final, anyone who goes against it is committing treason. Quackity reluctantly agrees, but says that what Tubbo said doesn’t mean they can’t deal with traitors after they stop Techno and Dream.

Costuming Strahd: Art Addendum

I didn't include any mention of the official Dungeons & Dragons art for Strahd von Zarovich in my previous post, because I had dismissed it outright. There, I said it.

I shall strive to amend my folly in this addendum.

Let's start with that 5e cover:

I generally approve of this representation. No doubt it colored my concept of Strahd's silhouette, since this is the first image of Strahd I came into contact with, some two or three years ago.

The shape of this garb is much like what I was aiming for in my previous post. Strahd is sporting a crisp shirt with stiffened, buttoned cuffs, much like our modern button-downs or blouses spanning back into the mid-1800s. His torso is trim in a fitted vest with standing collar, which easily fits into the category of fantasy-Renaissance. Speculation on from where/when exactly the inspiration comes might be a futile effort; it would find itself at home among the elves in The Lord of the Rings, and I'm not about to dig into that concept work just now.

Actually, what his vest reminds me of most is 15th century brigandine [or tabard (see below), which would cover brigandine or a breastplate, which is why] it's the right length, if nothing else.

I believe I said it's easy to fake good pants, especially when sitting down. This example reinforces my point. His legs are indeed covered, and the result is not garish. Not particularly exciting, but nonetheless successful. You could probably even call them hose if you really wanted to.

His boots are literal extant riding boots, from "early 20th c." England, and honestly I'm so proud of this one-to-one reference.

[Fig. 1] and [Fig. 2], although my first thought had been Victorian cycling boots.

The cape draped around his shoulders appears to be quite thin and probably only falls to about his fingertips, since it doesn't drape over the chair cushion and he's not sitting on it. It could look like some kind of military cape. Or maybe even, to drag him back a few centuries again, something Elizabethan.

I'll do a whole thing on capes later.

Moving on...

Early Strahd von Zarovich was definitely Dracula by another name, but later art has been pretty consistently (from what I can see) this other red/blue outfit, with baffling ruby clasps instead of a single pendant around his neck.

That last one has me. To be fair, it's the only one gazing back at the observer... >.>

Look. This garb is sexy. It cannot be understated. While it's not what I'm going for in my own costume foray, this is a fantastic design. Here's why:

The line where blue meets red along his ribcage accentuates his chest. That same red draws the eye down over his crotch, subtly curving to accomodate his thighs. Those chains on his cloak and the sash around his waist are positively drippy, like the source of the Ivlis pouring down to the Tser Pool. The asymmetry of that and his mismatched shoulders gives him such a dynamic slant, something to visually climb back up like handholds on the face of a cliff. And the sash is supple, in direct contrast to his armored hips, solid and stalwart. His limbs are clad in slim nondescript brown, making it all the easier to focus in on his center, in high contrast dotted with solid rubies. The red and blue both, especially together, are blood colors, indicative of veins hidden beneath the skin.

He might be covered from toe to jaw, but this is an intimate costume.

Despite my appreciation for it, though, again, I personally am trying to make something a little less Lord of the Rings. For reasons.

So, let's see what I can come up with in terms of historical inspiration... if anything, lol.

This is going to be fairly stream-of-consciousness. (Not that it wasn't already, I suppose.)

The first thing that came to mind was a kaftan (or zupan?), because they can be fitted through the torso and feature a standing collar and embellished closures up the front. But, kaftans from Russia, the Ottoman Empire, and other areas touched by those cultures usually also have sleeves. I finally found the two illustrations below without sleeves, but they were difficult to track down and I'm not sure how much of what they depict is imaginary. (Although the sword, pouch, and helmet from the first one are definitely from an extant burial site.)

There's also the Polish kontusz, where the arms can be worn out of the sleeves, with the sleeves flipped back, and that can give the illusion of sleevelessness... A lot of examples I found of this particular garment are also open to the waist, which is delightfully provocative, but doesn't resemble the Strahd ensemble.

I can think of little source material for that long, pointed fantasy hemline, but allow me to grasp at some straws.

Actually, this brings up a really good point of inquiry. Where does this drapery-between-the-legs situation that modern fantasy seems to be so enamoured with come from?

Tabards would seem the obious answer, but even that, in modern parlance, is used as an umbrella term for a wide range of garments that may or may not have any true basis in reality.

There's also just... loin cloths, I suppose, which can look like a piece of fabric just draped over the crotch and hanging between the legs, but there's usually more to it than that.

At last, after some digging around, I came across the video below. Bless Shad for his contribution to society.

It goes over all the the differences between those various styles of garment usually bearing symbols of allegiance all lumped together as "tabards", and presented me one more vocabulary word with which I was not yet familiar: the scapular.

Alas, monastic garb is my blind spot. Silly that I've played at least five clerics so far.

To summarize, I think the that the shape of the lower part of Strahd's... whatever-it-is... is inspired by a mix of these garments described in the video. It's short like a tabard should be, and has that dip between the legs reminiscent of a scapular.

But, ultimately, this thing is a waistcoat. Not a waistcoat in the Victorian sense; a waistcoat in the mid-18th century sense.

Finally, the very-high standing collar on Strahd's waistcoat smacks of a couple things: Russia (again), or the Regency era. Although, in the Regency years, waistcoats became much shorter (ending at the waist) and lengthened up the other way with high standing collars. But, if you were to combine the two waistcoats above and throw in some suggestive high-hip cutouts like a 1980's leotard, you might come out with something that resembles what Strahd is wearing in all that sumtuous art.

The one with the sash really drives the comparison home.

With the initial kaftan comparison and this guy with the funny hair (a Count Vasili, coincidentally) above, Strahd von Zarovich's red/blue fantasy garb is also giving the Motherland, and folks, I already said that I was trying to keep blatant Russia out of Barovia (as much as that garb clearly slaps). But I also recently remembered due to this post that I am a total sucker for Russian pet names, so... who knows.

In the end... do I know what I'm doing? Absolutely not. I'm not sure which of these elements will filter into further consideration for my own Strahd von Zarovich costume, but I'm definitely glad I gave all this a look. Absolutely worth it. Learned a lot. ♡

Waldorf Schools

Any episode that includes Bluey’s school… right away you can tell that it is an atypical school. It is: it’s a Waldorf school. The teaching style, curriculum, etc. are all distinct from standard approaches.

Here’s a deep dive on this based on some online research…

Rudolf Steiner, the founder of the first Waldorf school in Germany in 1919, believed that all children should be given "individualized" attention (rather than just those with special needs.)

This style of education emphasizes a focus on the 'individual' rather than the 'group', with each child being valued for their individual accomplishments: every child is deserving of the same attention typically given to gifted and learning-disabled students in conventional educational streams.

Classes within these schools are structured in a unique system of "blocks" that focus on particular areas of study for a period of three to four weeks rather than the same subjects for the whole school year or semester.

As children grow older, more concrete and technical areas of subjects are introduced. Through this method, not only are the developing child's needs met, but so are their interests. As a result, students are kept actively engaged.

Features of this style of education

The Waldorf curriculum integrates arts and music into all areas of study. Daily activities include drawing, painting, singing, instrument playing…

Even the aesthetic atmosphere of the classroom is different to a standard school: The Tampa Tribune described a Waldorf school setting: "Imagine a classroom with old wooden tables, a backyard garden and children learning to knit and crochet. Where art and music is intertwined with every subject, students write their own textbooks and the toys are all handmade". Which is definitely the look/feel in Bluey’s school…

Additionally, a tenet of this style of education is that a focus on art and nature in education can lead to a greater appreciation for the beauty of life later on.

Waldorf schools encourage children to keep working on their imagination skills beyond kindergarten, using these skills to learn how to co-operate, share and interact. This concept of letting children progress into adulthood at their own level is a unique cornerstone of the Waldorf education method.

This last piece is very key -- we seldom see anything being taught to the children; they’re free to do their own thing, make up activities, interact with one another, problem-solve, etc. and Calypso is there to gently guide them towards solutions occasionally.

So Why is This in “Bluey”?

The show “Bluey” is somewhat based on the show’s creator, Joe Brumm’s life experiences as a parent. Joe Brumm chose to have his daughter educated this way after she started the first grade. This is explained by Joe Brumm in an interview with the website The Father Hood:

"Bluey was still in embryonic form when Brumm’s eldest daughter started school. Her experience changed the course of the show.

'Play time was suddenly taken away from her, it was just yanked and seeing the difference in her was horrendous,' he says. 'There was no playing, there was no drawing, it was just straight into all this academic stuff. And the light in her eyes just died.'

Brumm researched alternatives for schooling and researched the value of play for child development. It is said that this is what led him to select Waldorf-style education for his daughter.

'Bluey is just one long extrapolation of that,' Brumm says. 'It’s to encourage people to look at play not just as kids mucking around, but as a really critical stage in their development that, I think, we overlook at their peril.'

Closing comment & a caution

Personally, I think it’s interesting to see a different approach of educating children depicted in a TV show. It’s not “oddball”, it’s just a part of these dog-children’s lives.

I feel like the public is exposed to a lot of examples of children’s education on television and it’s generally portrayed in a negative light: e.g. The Simpsons, Bob’s Burgers… and even on shows like “Arthur” the kids were often complaining about school, or having something unpleasant/stressful take place while at school.

My only concern for Bluey and her classmates (and maybe it’s a long-term issue, nothing to worry about in the short term) is this: a potential downside to a Waldorf-style education would potentially be the sharp adjustment a student will encounter transitioning from this nurturing environment to one where that isn’t the case. It could well be unsettling.

…phew, ok, maybe one or two more posts about the school to come.

(Maybe, because of the source material, some of this post may sound a little like a giant sales pitch… it’s not meant to be. I think it’s interesting because it’s different; something else to learn about, etc.)

Just shy of 30 I drew my own nude portrait…

I'm not new to nude figure drawing. I went to art school after all. And figure drawing courses are the least sexiest thing about art school.

Sometimes the model is moving through poses quickly so you never get to see one area for too long. Sometimes they sit for multiple sessions in the same pose and by the time it's over you may have developed a tense relationship with the back of someone's left knee.

If you fall in love, you've done it wrong. Plain and simple. It's a school child's definition of love - persistence and obsession, a single two-sided coin

But when was the last time you saw yourself as other's see you. I don't mean in a philosophical sense. When your friends take pictures of you, are you happy? or disgruntled? or sad? or bored?

What about when you see those photos? Do you hate what you see?

So far, most of my self portaits have just been that - portrait shots. From the shoulders up, I got really good at drawing my eyes, nose, mouth, ears. I've figured out how to draw glasses and how to get the eyes to look almost the same. At least twice a year I would draw myself. Usually for a class. And then I'd just start doing it because it seemed like a fun thing to do. And what better reference than one's own body.

I was never good at drawing the rest of me - body dysmorphia and body dysphoria created a me that was never me. Mirrors were my enemy. Or a window to a me who didn't exist. Or the me who existed while I was trapped in the mirror.

But then I started getting naked. I put myself on display. For people to look at and think their thoughts. I lavished in the praise and ignored the hatred. What did they know about me? About my body? The eating disorders? The hormone problems? Walking through life tits first, personality second? Who cares what they think. I certainly don't.

So why did I hate my body? Who is making me hate my body?

I chose to remove my facial features and instead draw some flowers. Because if I'm anything, than it's a hypocrite. A beautiful, sexy hypocrite.

I used to watch drawfee all the time but I ended up stopping for a few years (life stuff happened and I kinda forgot about them? Idk), I started watching again but now I feel like I have so much to catch up on and there's so many memes/jokes I don't know. Is there a sort of "best of" list I could find to help me catch up again? :')

I don't have one on hand, but I'm sure me and the others following can help catch you up! And its super valid to just forget, haha! Ive done that with several youtubers now that I have to catch up with!

Beginners Guide to Unnämed AKA U-san

Plus a little history on how they are friends with Shoto

Writing this incase any new Guildies come across my fics or fanart without Knowing.

I'll try to source things when possible, but some things are just left to quotes and summaries from U-san's twitter spaces other people made because they themselves don't keep the space up after each one ends.

Some Basic Background Information:

Unnämed, or more commonly called U-san, is a independent, nonbinary Japanese musician and vocalist, you can find their Twitter here

At the time of writing they have released one original song and 3 covers, find them on whatever music service you use through their Tunecore

They hold YouTube streams after the release of every song, typically giving life updates, singing karaoke, and thanking people who support them through super chats or streamlab donations

They sporadically hold random twitter spaces for shorter life updates or just to rant about something, as of writing they never once keep the recordings for these spaces

They had their first stream on December 17, 2022. It was an unarchived acoustic karaoke stream, roughly an hour long, mostly One OK Rock songs, their favorite band.

A Little History:

They would host several twitter spaces in the time leading up their full "return." Artist @/ooukination on twitter has a neat little comic summarizing that time period.

February 5th 2023, they drop their first original song, simply named Summer Song, marking an end to their elusive and silent era, now being more active on Twitter, and not deleting tweets a few minutes after making them.

The Fans and the Fan Culture

We used the nickname U-san to refer to them in the time before they acknowledged it, because they still hadn't decided on a name for themselves, only having "unnamednow" as a twitter handle, so it was a bit of a place holder, but on a twitter space U-san expressed that they found the name cute, and so U-san has endured.

In absence of any word of a return or any real way to reach them, the #dear_u_san was created by fans on twitter wanting to send their words of encouragement and fanart.

Pre-Summer Song depictions of U-san only had their YouTube and Twitter icon to go off of, they overlapped to give us this:

Half of a face and a hand reaching hold out a blue flame. Fanartists of the time would either obscure their top half their face with long bangs, exaggerated shadows covering their eyes, or a cloth/paper over the face (to symbolize their "death" as it were)

U-san has two main variations of how they depict themselves in their MV's, a blue eyed, black haired individual we see in Summer song, and a version with white hair with yellow eyes featured in Shinunoga E-wa, later taking up the entirety of the Tot Musica screentime, and now both of them sharing the spotlight in the most recent release, Kickback.

Before the release of Summer song all we had was U-sans twitter icon which started off with no color but was updated to include some colors, their hair staying white.

The pre Summer Song fanart had almost always had white hair as a result.

But afterwards when we got the "true" U-san appearance with Summer Song, fans were left questioning the significance of this white haired icon that U-san notably kept even when they updated their twitter header to the new Kanishiima illustration. It wouldn't be until Shinunoga E-wa that they changed their icon- using the one shot out of four with their white hair. This pattern of having a white haired icon and the black haired banner keeping true even now.

To draw a distinction between the two, Ooukie proposed the nicknames U-Shiro and U-Kuro, sometimes shortened to just Shiro and Kuro by other u-rei's.

The blue flame was on their original icon(s) was adopted by fans as a sort of mascot, Ooukie to my knowledge being the first to do so here

With nothing but an empty space and a crumb of a self portrait, U-reis started brainstorming (more like trying to make a universe to subsequently justify in universe) why they were absent and illusive, ex. Here, again from Oouki

We kind of didn't have any kind of consensus on a fan name until Ooukie again, supplied us with U-rei, which quickly spread, eventually making its way to U-san acknowledging it on stream, giving their approval on stream

Outside of the usual U-rei depiction of a small blue flame guy, others began to make 'sonas/ oc's to play around with the loose idea of U-san as a character and a type of world they would reside in, which lead to the twitter hashtag #u_rei_sona

U-rei-sona's typically are spirits, mythical beings, ghosts, and any manner of being that can be connected to the idea of death and rebirth, which is what U-san went through sort of in a meta narrative kind of way

He was among the many viewers of U-sans first livestream, the unarchieved karaoke, vague tweeting his thoughts on his main and alt accounts

Shoto and U-san's History

Later during his subathon happening a few days after U-san's stream, he dedicated a song a friend he didn't explicitly name but was certainly alluding to U-san by the way he described this friend and how this song and band was one of their favorites. See full clip here

That was it for a while until Summer Song released, and we (the public) saw them both interacting, sharing their similar struggles with broken eye glasses, their choice in earrings and plenty of private interactions I'm sure, that we aren't privy to

Shoto would invite U-san to accompany him on his Dead Space Remake streams which as of writing of this post, there are two that U-san features in (here and here)

During a bathroom break on the first stream, U-san tells us that he's thankful for Shoto, because they didn't have a lot of people to interact with, watch the full clip

Then finally, recently they met irl during Shoto's vacation to Japan, where they lost an hour of their time to Tokyo station confusion, U-san talks about the experience in their KickBack after party stream and I'm sure Shoto will tell his half of the story when he goes to stream to talk about his vacation

We knew they had met before U-san told the tale on stream because both made voice tweets only a few hours before U-san's Kickback cover was due to release.

.....and that's about it yeah! This is just a starter guide, I didn't even get into the theories surrounding U-san's music vids the possible lore implications if they're all connected, how U-san dodges questions about their hair color changing and the imagery of drowning they used-

There's a lot to be had here, and U-san's career is just getting started! They have told us time and time again that our donations and support are going directly to fund future projects, so there are surely more great things in store for us.

A couple Random Genji and some kiriko + other headcanons/short story things? Not a full fic or anything but headcannons that kinda flow into a story of some kind. I don't even have a clue how many I've done at this point XD

Second half of this gets a little sadder, and mentions stuff from his Playboy days including drinking and drugs and stuff not much but it's there so still head up.

BUT then I wrote a short cute thing of how I imagine kiriko reunited with genji so it's not all angst and depresso.

Also random Gency here and there! (There's alot not going to lie lol)

And lastly as per always, this is very very rambly as I'm just getting my thoughts written out and there's not much actual order and there might be some jumping back and forth but I tried to keep it as steady flow as my brain would allow. This one is rather long though.

This one actually starts with Dva! (This is partially inspired of a few other head cannons I've seen from people) After she joined OverWatch in between missions whenever she's doing more normal streams that aren't streaming the fights, where she's in her room gaming or doing other streams around the base, she would bring some of the other members onto the streams either they would pop in to say hi or would stay for whole streams. At first it would primarily be the new blood crew, as they had been around either for longer and her Chat had gotten to know them too.

But then after a while chat started to notice these same two people popping in for quite a lot of streams not really ever acknowledging chat but just talking to Dva. They would be giving her food and bringing her drinks and stuff ,making sure that she's staying hydrated ,making sure she's okay, and just all around taking care of her. One of the two was immediately recognized to be mercy which the chat started lovingly referring to as "mom" because in any stream she appeared in even for a couple seconds she was always just taking care of everyone and looking after everyone and reminding her not to stream too long. The second person wasn't immediately recognized, at least by name anyways. Genji wasn't known to the public what his name was, they just knew he was the ninja guy from OverWatch, that they had seen on the news a couple times in some fights like when they took down doomfist or in Paris. And they had especially never heard him talk before this, so all anyone publicly knew about him was there was this omnic looking guy who was a ninja with green lights on him. And after the first few times he popped in to check on Diva bringing her stuff, and way more specific stuff that he knows would be better for her to have during stream or gaming sessions because he himself being quite experienced in the gaming department he knows what kind of snacks or beverages are better to have while still being healthy at least a little. And after these many appearances by this unnamed member they had no idea who he was, Diva eventually explained to her chat that that was Genji and he was a cyborg ninja who looks intimidating (and can be very intimidating) but who's actually a really big sweetheart is very caring and stuff. So considering how Chat had started referring to mercy as mom, they started referring to Genji as dad, which then eventually snowballed into people shipping them on Diva's stream even going as far as drawing fanart of them. Which at this point no one on the base actually knew Genji mercy had a thing going on outside of tracer ,sojourn and Cassidy and kind of Winston but he was mostly oblivious. They mostly knew from before overwatch shut down, from the random dates they went on or the late night conversations and the all-around flirting between the two of them, but none of them knew that they were even more of a thing than before and were even closer.

Moving on to the next head cannon which ties into that one. We know Genji and Hanzo reunited on the 10-year anniversary of Genji's death when he was around 35, and he's 37 now, and the last letter we know of really between the two is when he told her about reuniting with his brother. And we also know from the recent logs from PVE that Genji hasn't actually been at the monastery in a while and hasn't seen zenyatta in a long time and has just been writing him letters. So I personally like to believe in that in that two-year span Genji was wandering around again with ,a new purpose in life this time ,specifically on the mission to track down Angela. Where he eventually found her after about a year or so, because he had no idea where she was, since he left the monastery he didn't have any of the letters that she could have sent in the meantime, specifically one where she mentioned that she was leaving Cairo and going somewhere else. So for about a year he was on kind of a wild goose chase just kind of running around trying to find her eventually he did find her. At this point she was in between her trips to places to help people and was just in her home in Switzerland, which I like to imagine she lives in an apartment.

Which is where Genji tracks her down to, end of instead knocking on the door like a normal person he knocked on her window, because he couldn't be bothered taking the stairs inside and just wall climbed up to her balcony because it was "easier". He brought with him a few gifts including Swiss chocolate which he was able to get much easier now being in Switzerland, and a couple other assorted gifts.

So as Angela was sitting at her desk filling out paperwork at midnight, she heard a knocking on her window which at first she brushed off as the wind but then realized how distinct of a knocking it was. So cautiously she grabbed her blaster from the table she'd been working on all her Valkyrie suit stuff on, quietly tiptoed over to the window peaked through her blinds and didn't see anything except for a faint green Glow. Which definitely confused her at first so against your better judgment she opened the window, poked your head out and was looking side to side couldn't see anything or anyone, balcony completely empty. Until a little ribbon thing fell in front of her face was she immediately recognized and looked up to see Genji dangling from the upstairs balcony Spider-Man style because of course he is. And before she can say anything Genji says a sweet little "hello doctor", and plopped down in front of her perching himself on the balcony wall. Then after 2 seconds of fully registering what's going on she happily yells out Genji's name as she wraps her arms around him. Where he quickly has to grab onto the window / door so they both don't fall off the balcony with the force she have charged at him with. She apologizes, genji says it's fine, they both giggle, Genji then reaches up and completely takes off his mask/helmet, reaches out brushes a loose strand of hair behind her ear and leans in and says "I missed you <3" in a loveing hushed voice. Which mixed with the cheeky smirk on his scarred face makes Angela's face go completely red. Flustered she looks him in the eyes and smiles before saying "I missed you too<3" as she leans in and kisses genji on the cheek making him go so red in the face that even his ears are blushing and steam releases through his shoulder vents. And for Genji can even get any words out Angela pulls him inside like grabbing on to the front of his new hoodie, what she then cheekily but honestly compliments saying how it suits him, and he does the same with her new hair cut.

You then spend roughly the next year living together slowly getting closer and closer and more and more comfortable with each other than they already were (like they were basically dating at this point but just hadn't admitted it) snuggling, doing daily tasks together, when Angela came home from her long shifts at the hospital genji had done all the household chores and had cooked dinner for them both. And where all-around enjoying life to the best of their abilities, considering all the stuff going on in the news, and eventually the recall. Which they desired to answer together, and made their way to Paris arriving just in time to save Winston, tracer and mei along side Reinhardt, Brigitte, and echo.

Back to the Dva streaming thing, once genji and mercy found out dvas chat called them mom and dad they both laughed at it, but also kinda agreed. Genji first said he didn't see it for himself, which almost everyone else chimed in with all the times he has looked after someone, helped them out, made sure they are staying hydrated, looking out for their health (mental and physical) and has overall became someone any of them can talk to for reassurance or guidance. That combined with all the terrible dad jokes. They both eventually accept their roles as the mom and dad friends of the group.

Genji 100% makw some of the worst but the best dad jokes

Some examples of this, like in PVE when Genji checks in on mei to see if she's doing okay, comforts tracer about mondattas death, even him talking about Cassidy about how he hasn't been sleeping and helping him deal with the emotions and memories causing that. I'm definitely also see him befriending Zarya pretty quickly, after not getting off on the right foot with her not trusting him seeing him as part omnic and not knowing if she can trust him because of it, once they step foot into the gym together they instantly become workout buddies, especially considering both of them are frantically trying to help the others not injure themselves while doing what they think are basic workouts. Primarily with mei, Lucio, dva, even Baptiste and then a couple of the others. Lucio on multiple occasions would go into the gym not wearing proper footwear and immediately get sent back out by either Zarya or Genji. And with the people they don't have to help out as much in that way, they both spar or train with the others and help push them when they need it and help them to go easy when they need it (like brig, tracer or rein)

Genji also gives the best massages in OverWatch, primarily to mercy but he does them for everyone else as well. And when someone injures themselves in a non bloody we should probably take you to the medics kind of way he can help bandage up rolled ankles or other pulled muscles and other more athletics based injuries from both personal experience and stuff he's picked up from being around mercy for so long.

And for the third time back to Dva stream thing, there was one time she was doing a cooking stream with Lucio, and Genji happen to walk into the room to see them trying and shopping things and immediately having to dash over there and take the knives out their hands because Jesus Christ they were going to hurt themselves the way they were trying to do it. And after he confiscated the knives he showed them how to properly use them so they wouldn't hurt themselves horribly, and then physically got them to try cutting again this time with his supervision so they could hands on learn how to do it while also having genji there as a safety net to make sure they don't cut their fingers off.

And eventually after a while of convincing Genji eventually came on to one of Diva's dreams for the whole thing and ended up playing games with her which is where she found out Genji used to play video games a lot (and it turns out Genji is better than her, he kicked her butt a few times and then went easier on her but acted like he was still trying so she could feel like she had beaten him and to not humiliate her in front of her stream) and he was better than her at fighting/shooters games but Dva was better in racing/flying/absurd nonsense games(think like gang beasts and fall guys) except for things like Mario kart (or whatever the OverWatch equivalent would be) where they were pretty evenly matched.

And there was one time they tried to play VR only to very quickly realize that Genji could not because he couldn't get the headset over his mask, and even when they finally did get it to stay in place(kinda) he couldn't hear anything through it and it looked ridiculous over his mask, and everything was tinted very green. So dva changed the set up so the camera wasn't facing him so he could take his mask off and properly play, because she still wanted to play with him but didn't want to make him uncomfortable because she knew he wasn't very big on showing his face especially to the hundreds of thousands of people watching.

Dva also introduced him to games like beat saber which he loved, and was very good at, mainly because of all the sword training (even though it wasn't accurate it was definitely helpful)

Now switching gears to some different head cannons, this is where the sad stuff happens!!!! ANGST TIME!!!!

Genji when looking back at his old self (playboy days) is very overly harsh on himself and views himself as a way worse person than he actually was at the time. Looking back at those days with the opposite of rose tinted glasses. Overall just viewing himself as a very mean selfish person when, in actuality he was still a very kind-hearted sweet person like he is now. Back then though he wasn't allowed to show it or would be punished when he did for "being weak". And he also looks back at his Playboy partying days not really acknowledging why he was doing all that. Forgetting the mental state he was in at that point, with his mental state during black watch and the initial years of his time in OverWatch overshadowing the negative emotions he felt back then.

he had no interest with being a part of the family business but also just didn't agree with it, he was drifting from his brother who he used to be almost inseparable from and now it was almost like talking to a stranger with how cold and distant Hanzo seem to have become. Or whenever he went out trying to make friends or tried dating people, either they didn't want to interact with him because they were scared of the fact he was a shimada and believed him to be dangerous, or when they did want to interact with him they only wanted to interact with him so they could use him for his money and status ,or only going after him for his looks and not actually him as a person. then an assortment of other small things which built up only topped off by the ever-increasing stress and pressure put on from his family and Clan elders, and eventually the assassination of his father sending him over the edge into full party Playboy this is the only way he knows how to cope mode.

With him constantly getting drunk, high, or even a combination of both, and just overall being a Playboy by "sleeping" around to try and escape from his reality, to feel something, something that wasn't all the bad things he was feeling now.

The only one who actually knew anywhere close to what Genji was going through or how he was feeling at this time was kiriko. (I don't care what her canonical age says it makes no sense so I'm still sticking with she's a couple years younger than them. So like when genji's 37, she's 32-33 or something) they would hang out with all the time, and she very quickly picked up on his rapidly decreasing mental and emotional state, not knowing how to help other then just being there for him.

When he wasn't drunk or out partying, he was going out around hanamura/kanezeka, primarily to the arcade with kirko. Where she witnessed all the good things Genji would do and how nice he was with people. like when he saw kids struggling at an arcade game, trying their hardest and failing, he would go over and help the kids in whatever way they needed so that they would win. And if the kids had given up and we're starting to walk away, he would go over play the game and win big prize, the go over redeem the prize and then give the prize to the kids. Or when someone was being harassed, attacked or in general being put in danger, he would stand up for them and defend them, using his skills as a ninja too take down multiple of these harassers or attackers with ease, as kiriko would tend to the person in need to see if they had any wounds or in general to see if they're okay. And if Genji did need help in fighting, he would fight side by side with kiriko defending the city together, helping wherever they could.

She just remembers all the joy he would bring to people around the city. Primarily just by doing little things and being a nice person, actions that he would dismiss as not being meaningful or actually good deeds, not being able to see past the part of him which made him tied to one of the most feared and most dangerous yakuzas in the whole of Japan ,and in terms of criminal empires at the time, in a lot of the world. Genji instinctively would have put on a mask of the cocky full of himself spoiled rich kid with a carefree attitude, only ever letting it really drop around kiriko or in these random moments of kind-hearted gestures with locals or complete stragers. Where you could actually see the real him, the real him that he had to hide from the clan because he was seen as weak and undesirable, and overall just not being cut out for the family legacy. Which overtime only weight heavier and heavier on his heart and soul, not being able to see that the locals around him loved and appreciated him. Not seeing the sentiments and opinions that they hold even to this day of Genji, not seeing him as a shimada, but as Genji. The green haired goofball who would get himself into trouble but had a kind heart and was just an all-around good kid, that they never found out what happened to and to their knowledge just disappeared one day, the same day Hanzo left and was almost never seen again, with only the occasional sightings once a year on the same day. And not too long after the brothers disappearances, the rest of the clan will go on too, either gone into hiding, arrested or killed.

The Kind-hearted sweeter quiet but Goofy side of Genji is the side that kiriko remembers, even years later. She doesn't mourn for the loss of the cocky rich Playboy persona who would get into fights to prove he was better and didn't care about anyone other them himself.

She missed her best friend. The sweet guy she grew up with, who happened to be into a family who didn't want him for him. And as much as kirko still looks back on the clan with rose tinted glasses, much like how pharrah looks back on OverWatch, she still remembers what the clan did to Genji. Not just ordering him to be killed, not just his own brother who they both trusted who Genji loved wholeheartedly even though they had grown distant and/or it was never really shown anymore, but for how they mentally and emotionally broke him down over the years. Leading him down a path which he never wanted to take a step down in the first place. A path which he thought was his only way of escape, even if it was temporary.

She remembers all the nights of Genji coming back from being at the club, only for him to come home to angry screaming about how disappointed they are in him, the shame he's bringing to their family, and the countless other heated arguments between him and Hanzo, where Genji hardly able to speak for himself because how drunk/high he was, get frustrated and just storm away to his room not even listening to Hanzo yelling after him. And all the times she would go into his room to find him sitting on the floor in the corner quietly crying, far too drunk to even try hiding his emotions at this point. where she would sit with him and just talk to him for hours as he cried until he passed out. And all the nights she wished she could do more to help him, all the times she regrets not protecting him, and all the times she replays the memories in her head, going through all the different outcomes of things she could have done differently that would result in him still being with her today, and the different lives they could have been living. All things that are not her fault, things that she had no control over, but still keep her up at night. All the times Genji took the blame for something she did to protect her from being punished, all the times he stood up for her and was there for her, even being the one to advocate for her to join him and Hanzo in training despite all the protests from the elders and the uncertainty from Hanzo, his father and her mother, he stood up and believed in her that she was ready, eventually winning them over and allowing her to join.

All these memories of the friend she lost and wished every day that he could come back, that one day he would come knocking at her front door with donuts ,cookies or sweets in hand like he used to do when he would sneak them both sweets when they both really shouldn't have been having sugar, or weren't allowed any because they were in trouble.

She even keeps a bunch of mementos around her apartment that remind her of him. including her first kunai, his headband that he used to wear all the time in training that Hanzo would tell him look stupid but he didn't care, just seeing how annoyed it made Hanzo made it worth it. A bunch of his drawings she framed and hung up that he would do in secret ,that he didn't think were that good but kiriko absolutely loved and would try to tell him they were amazing. A bunch of assorted toys and plushies she keeps on her shelves and desk that they won at the arcade together. Or even how she continues to dye her hair the same shade of green years later because it was the color that she would dye it when they would dye their hair together.

And even though she couldn't have done anything differently....she feels like she failed him. which is one of the reasons she tries so hard everyday to fight for her friends and for the people of kanezeka, because hopefully someday, she can feel like she made it up to him. Now constantly paranoid of losing someone she cares about, terrified she loses someone like she lost Genji. And still wanting to continue the small deeds of kindness that he would do, that he didn't think meant anything but to her and everyone around him meant the world.

Of course at this point she had no idea he is actually alive.

Whenever genji had a free moment in OverWatch, he would be trying to find her/find a way to contact her, and thinking of all the ways that he could go about explaining everything to her and apologizing for not finding her sooner and not being there. With a million thoughts running through his head not knowing how to go about it. Telling Hanzo was one thing because as much as his brother didn't like to believe it he was predictable, Genji knew pretty much exactly how Hanzo was going to react and could guess every single thing he would do the entire meeting, and even though he knew kiriko he knew that she wasn't like Hanzo, kiriko most likely changed so much you know those years, unlike Hanzo who stuck in the past. She didn't know how she would react, if she would hate him, if she would be happy, if she would punch him in the face the second she saw him, A million ways he could go about it and not one he was certain on. After talking with zenyatta and Angela he eventually decided todo what felt right.

(when reading this next part, picture it with the calm happy music from the kiriko cinematic! It adds to the feels)

So on random evening, the elevator doors opened and out walked a man who had never been there before. A man wearing a gray hoodie and joggers, with what looked like a cybernetic hand, with his hood pulled up and a black cloth mask covering his lower face, and from under the hood peeked a couple strands of bright green hair, and in hand where two boxes of doughnuts. And on his way walking to one of the doors he stopped and said hello to the old man who appeared to be the janitor/maintenance man for that apartment building, and a little girl wearing a kitsune mask with a fox plushie in hand. She was sitting on the floor coloring with crayons, where upon closer inspection she was trying a very familiar green haired girl then also familiar blue spirit fox. Smiling under his mask, he bent down to get a closer look at the drawing, which caught the girls attention, initially being a little scared he signed to her telling her that it's okay and he just wanted to compliment her drawing. She shyly thanked him, and then Genji asked what her name was, to which she replied with "little fox" while giggling and then asked what his name was, and he replied with "Sparrow" and told her that he was here to see a friend that he hasn't seen for a really long time. Did they then said/signed their goodbyes, has Genji stood back up bringing the donuts with him and proceeded to walk to the end of the hall. Where he paused, took in a deep breath, then knocked on the door, holding up the donuts so that he couldn't be seeing through the peep hole. And when kiriko open the door, confused and who it was especially this time of night, she looked up as Genji lowered his mask and simply said "hey kiriko"

A cleric who studies magic while providing healing to visitors. His gigantic magical gloves are the tools of his trade, which he wields with great skill.

Claude’s lore video starts off with a memory of himself back when he was a child alongside a friend of his, energetically striking a pose making Claude laugh. In the memory, his friend appeared as a young boy having messy light brown hair with a black streak above a subtle undercut, a bandaged nose and cheek with a deep scar on his right eyebrow, and vibrant emerald green eyes. As they grew up, the two are shown working hard to pursue their own separate future dreams and goals. For Claude, these goals would be related to his Cleric studies, while for his friend, aligning into something more combat based. This often caused his friend to frequently become injured and can be seen being helped up by Claude while in a bruised, weakened state. Despite the differences of ideas in future paths between the two, they didn’t seem to let this stop them from remaining very tightly knit to each other. As time went on, they continued to meet up to spend time together in the in the same specific spot, a quiet and secluded grassy hillside with a large tree casting shade down below, per usual. But for unknown reasons, Claude’s friend passes away. Alluded when Claude is standing alone on the same hillside beneath the tree holding many memories of their time together beneath, gently laying down two flowers tied by a thin ribbon down on a gravestone.

Some time after the passing of his friend, a young wounded patient under Claude’s care waves to him and for a brief moment fades to appearing as a past memory resembling when he used to take care of his childhood friend, quickly fading back to the patient and a smile on Claude’s face.

On the golden attachment to his upper shirt, Claude has mentioned that the flowers dangling down are specifically foxgloves. It is notable that foxgloves are very dangerous flowers with extremely poisonous chemicals that are fatal if ingested and in rare cases can have it’s toxins even be absorbed just through touching or inhaling the plant. Despite its dangers, it has medical purposes that are typically used in the drug Digoxin to treat cardiac conditions and most commonly in heart failure, though it can have potential toxic side effects. Claude has not confirmed why he wears them or their purpose and the reason currently remains unknown.

Tbh, sometimes you're way too hardpressed on intradiagetic explanations in opm that you don't much factor in extradiagetic explanations.

Murata puts emphasis on detail yes, but I'm pretty sure there are just instances where he draws something doesn't have a deeper explanation behind. Like, idk, maybe Murata just got better at drawing leather, not bc Saitama got gifted better boots by Genos to replace his "plastic" ones. Tatsumaki doesn't wear pants isn't bc she's stupid, it's bc Murata is kind of a pervert.

Or like how Fubuki's boobs got bigger over the course of the manga, what, you're gonna tell us she got a boob job in between? :/

True, all analyses devolve into absurdity when followed too far. However, I hope I can justify my approach in this specific instance beyond 'it's fun', which is a sufficient answer to all things fannish.

First of all, it is true that a lot of the changes in the characters' appearances derives from Murata making stylistic changes. In particular, when he started drawing One-Punch Man, he was very keen to break out of the expressions and visual shorthands he'd developed during Eyeshield 21 (see volume 1 of One-Bukoru for more on that). It would seem that in time, he's developed an OPM visual shorthand that still leaves him scope to present the characters semi-realistically when the story demands it.

Let us stay outside the story a little while longer. It would make no sense to consider an intradiegetic explanation for Saitama's clothing in the webcomic. ONE draws clothes on his characters because they normally need some sort of clothing -- once he gets a look for them, that's it. Except where the choice of clothing is plot-relevant (like Teru choosing a terrible t-shirt for Mob), 'clothes were provided' is all that one need to say about it. Murata is very different in this regard. Outside of his art, he has a lot of interest in clothes: for example, he regularly promotes his uncle's kimono store on his Twitter. He spends considerable time referencing outfits for characters (and it's a fun sport for fans to find -- and price up -- those references). He spends a lot of time agonizing what a chracer's outfit says about them. See, for example, this titbit from his 11 June 2018 stream on King's clothing. His awareness of how clothing is an expression of a character's personality and the social signalling it provides has made it explicitly into the text, where Saitama asks Genos if his clothes make him look poor.

Therefore, let us get the first thing straight: the state and type of clothing has meaning within the context of the OPM manga, much more so than it does in the webcomic.

Let us consider the second party in this. Within the manga, it is canonical that Genos is well dressed -- and has been becoming more fashionable with time. Conflict between himself and the shoddily-dressed Saitama would seem likely. Let us consider what we see, therefore.

It is canonical that Genos cleans and repairs Saitama's clothing, including his precious hero uniform. He even goes so far as to have it professionally tended to on occasion (complete with dismay when Saitama gives it away...). He is very invested in Saitama looking his best.

Building on this, Saitama's cheaply-sourced outfits are disliked by Genos. When Saitama asked about looking poor, Genos changed the subject as he wasn't comfortable with telling Saitama bluntly that yes, he does look *that* poor. Genos being unhappy with Saitama's appearance extends to that hero uniform, which Genos has offered to replace as a gift (see 'Road to Hero').

So, we have in place, without an ounce of speculation, a man who dresses cheaply and badly. We have his closest associate, his disciple, being well dressed and distressed on occasion at his master's appearance. It is also well established that his disciple actively tries to improve things for said man.

Given that Genos's care extends to repairing Saitama's clothing, it is not unreasonable to impute that at least some of the improved fit and appearance of Saitama's wardrobe in the story is due to Genos's efforts.

Onto the other side of Saitama fitting his clothes better: food. It is established both within the text and supplemenatary to the text (ONE's interview in the Hero Encyclopedia) that Saitama had difficulty on consistently affording enough to eat before he met Genos. At times, he was even glad for food handouts from grateful people.

Since Genos's arrival, Saitama eats three good meals a day (eating three times a day is non-optional according to Saitama, what is optional is how much to eat: a banana will do if there is no other food available), both because Genos cooks and because pro-hero employment has meant a steady paycheck. It is not plausible that two months of eating well after being undernourished should have no effect whatsoever on how he bulks out.

Notwithstanding changes in Murata's art, it is unreasonable to presume that all the changes in Saitama's appearance can only be due to the art changes. I agree that one should not be overly speculative in one's analyses, but where there is good grounding for inferences, failing to make them is poor reading (1).

Then and now

If you're looking for extradiegetic readings of OPM, I can't recommend better than the Youtuber keatsta https://www.youtube.com/@keatsta2928/videos A long time fan of One-Punch Man, he's unfortunately not been reading the manga since chapter 165, but is still reviewing the webcomic. He's always got something interesting and insightful to say.

As I hope you're able to tell, I do consider the context and authorial intent in deciding how heavily to lean into an intradiegetic reading. Extradiegetic readings often carry the air of objectivity, but that is not necessarily justifiable or even the point. I'll give an example from my own life. Back when I was a snarky teenager, I attended one of my grandfather's art exhibitions. At the reception, I happened to overhear an art critic explaining to someone the signficance of of my grandfather's use of yellows in a painting. I thought (but thankfully did not say) 'how silly -- Grandpa just happened to have a lot of yellow paints to use up at the time.' I knew this to be so because I'd been around at the time he'd painted that picture. My grandfather has been gone for getting on a decade now, and I have no idea where the painting is hanging but I hope that its bold, yet nuanced use of yellows is stil speaking powerfully to someone.

Aside

(1) The inference that Genos has had a hand in improving Saitama's appearance would be 100% uncontroversial if he were a woman and Saitama's girlfriend. It is a deliberately jarring element of One-Punch Man that Genos has the concern for Saitama's appearance and well-being more normally reserved for romantic partners. Without necessarily being romantic.

Like I was saying, beware false objectivity. It often conceals a bias.

Recently I became aware of a musical genre by the name of “Glitchbreak”, a musical genre very closely related to Breakcore and seemingly only separated from it by it’s anime and y2k inspired aesthetic and samples. When you look in the right places it really starts to seem like the reason the genre exists is to refer to a sub-genre of Breakcore that a lot of Breakcore fans don’t like (it also sometimes gets called “anime Breakcore” by these individuals).

So far this is pretty whatever on it’s own. Glitchbreak is sparkling DnB, because it isn’t Breakcore unless it’s from the correct region of France or whatever. But when you look into the artists who produce in this genre I think an interesting pattern begins to emerge that’s worth talking about, especially in the context of this genre essentially being music that was deemed to not be “true Breakcore” by Breakcore fans. Because honestly this whole situation kind of raises some possible red flags for me, and I want to draw attention to that in case I have actually identified a real problem within this niche little online music community, because nobody else seems to have pointed this out.

One really interesting thing to note about "Glitchbreak" as a genre is that none of the artists who apparently make it use the term "Glitchbreak" to describe their music. Despite this, it is recognized as a real genre by streaming services like Spotify and many other sites. It also has a small Reddit community (r/glitchbreak). I personally find this Subreddit incredibly telling in a lot of ways. Firstly is their "Glitchbreak QnA" post (which is actually one of the first things that comes up if you google "Glitchbreak"). In this post they say the following about the musical genre that their Subreddit is about:

What is Glitchbreak and how is it different from breakcore and jungle?

It is a music microgenre that can be combination of different genres, but the main similarity of the songs is a breakbeat or a dnb beat (less common). Aesthetic influences include anime, web y2k, glitchcore and many others.

Why was this subreddit created?

Most people don’t know what to call songs that are not true breakcore. The main reason of this subreddit is to separate anime “breakcore” posts from r/breakcore. This is to lessen conflict in r/breakcore because people would argue that it is not breakcore but actually a ambient-atmospheric-liquid-jungle-mashcore dnb song. Some of the members also dislike anime “breakcore”, so this is the subreddit to post that kind of music

I also want to state that this post isn't about the Subreddit. These are just people who wanted to talk about the music they liked but found that they couldn't do so elsewhere, and so they created their own community. They are not the issue here, what they have done is fine, and in fact is something that they may have only had to have done because of the hostility that other communities display towards this "micro-genre".

Now, with this context added, Let's have a look at some of the artists in the “Glitchbreak” genre. This list is in no way exhaustive, but it lists a few artists considered by those in the community to have made "Glitchbreak" music. This list really only exists to show the observation that I'm making in this post. I do not have the time to make a full exhaustive list. This is just an observation, this isn't an academic paper, do not take what I have observed as objective fact. (Here is the Subreddit's list of artists btw in case you want to look through a much longer list.)

Rory in early 20’s: trans lesbian (she/her) (most of this info comes from this page https://en.pronouns.page/@rorynearly20s. That one doesn't mention that she's trans though, we only know that because it was listed on a different [and now defunct] page on the same website, and we can see people talking about it on this community post she made about it: https://www.youtube.com/post/UgkxSi_3DOgeSbn2ceVa416R-AlixvyfYeQw)

Machine Girl: These days Machine Girl is a duo, and they mainly make Digital Hardcore, so the people who make this classification are likely referring to the music produced by the bands founder (Matt) alone, and not to the work they produced with Sean Kelly (the groups second member). Matt is Nonbinary and uses they/them, (I only know this because of a screenshot of the official discord shared in the comments of a Reddit post by user u/weedcop420. if you just want to see the image you can see it here.)

Sewerslvt: Transfem/nonbinary, possibly they/them. To our knowledge was in a wlw relationship for a while. (Information on this artist is a little sparse and obscure for multiple reasons that I don't have time to get into. This is based on what their fans have been able to find/already knew. But the fact that this artist is MtF is confirmed. Their final ever musical project was apparently dedicated to their late girlfriend Angel, we don't know much else. Most of this can be found on the fan wiki. But I won't be linking it here because this artist seems to have deleted a lot of this information from their socials. I only bring them up because they are too large to not mention.)

purity://filter: Couldn't see pronouns listed anywhere, but since purity://filter and Vertigoaway list each other as their wives on their social media's, it's pretty safe to assume that purity://filter is a queer woman. (https://www.instagram.com/purity_filter/)

Bye2: Based on what I was able to find, Bye2 seems to be a queer woman. (My sources for this? We know that Bye2 is a woman because they have stated as such in the Youtube comments on one of their songs [it's in a reply to the pinned comment]. And my information on their sexuality also comes from some random place on YouTube: in the YouTube description for their song "Girl Soup多摩市風" we get the following quote "Thank u to This HHot Wife of Mine who recorded it thru the CRT : )" (sic) I know this isn't exactly conclusive proof, but this is the best info I could find. Can we please bring back helpful "About Me" sections? While we're here I would also like to share the official Bye2 website (https://bye2.co.uk/) because I came across it while looking for this stuff, and while it wasn't overly helpful, it is a really fun looking site on desktop.)

So now my point: This genre is basically defined as "not Breakcore", and a whole lot of its top artists seem to be queer and/or women. I think we have to ask ourselves "Why does the music these artists produce need a separate genre?" While not all of these artists would say that they make Breakcore, some do (or did). And yet, their songs are not classified as such, they are labelled as being a different genre that none of them seem to claim or acknowledge.

Now, maybe I've accidentally put on a tinfoil hat here, but the fact that a separate genre defined by what it isn't exists to classify the music of these majority queer and/or female artists rings some alarm bells in my head. This "genre" seems to exist partially to allow these artists to be excluded from other genres. At most it feels like it should be a sub genre, but in reality it seems more like a sort of "anti-genre".

I am not saying that those who use this label are doing this on purpose, or that the concept of micro-genre's is bad in any way (again, the people on the Glitchbreak Subreddit have done nothing wrong). But what I am saying is that I think we should think harder about why this distinction is being made in the first place, because it seems suspect to me. Especially since this doesn't seem like a term that has come from these artists themselves at all (in fact there are terms that come from these artists that could be getting used instead, purity://filter coined "Sextrance"), it exists purely to differentiate them from other musicians who make similar music, and seems to have been born as a result of fans who want to gatekeep the genre's they listen to not only from fans, but artists as well.

Has an entire genre been created to exclude female and/or queer musicians from more mainstream niche genres? I don't know, I'm not claiming that, I just recognized a pattern and felt the need to share it just in case it was meaningful, and maybe it isn't.
