Just a few of my favorite quotes from Goncharov (1973) that I think need more love and appreciation:
"If I could stop time but still feel your heart beating, then time would stand still forever."
"What's your poison?" "Whatever you're having, darling." (Aka that line in THEE cocktail scene)
"I'll stay with you tonight, if you'll have me." "I wouldn't have anyone else."
"When we got married, I drew this line between us and the world. You've crossed that line, and I can't go with you. You and I are, I think, finally out of time."
"Broken mirrors are bad luck, you know. That clock is silver-backed glass, and you can see yourself in its face. Is that not a mirror?" "If I were cursed, Sofia, then I would never have found you." "You could still lose me." "Never."
"Time is like blood, and I have spilled both."

ok but can we talk about that scene where the coroner announces the cause of katya's father's death as liver failure and every single person in the room tries so fucking hard to not look absolutely confused???? cinematic brilliance
you have seven people, each of whom independently tried to kill the bastard in completely different ways for entirely unrelated reasons, all absolutely baffled and trying their damnedest not to show it so they don't get in trouble with everyone else since they're all still pretending to grieve???
and sofia is the only one who knows and she can't ever say anything bc she knows katya would feel obligated to try and avenge her pos father even if he ended up drinking himself to death before anybody managed to finally off him.
perfect blend of tragedy, comedy, and romance matteo jwhj0715 is a genius

I love Sofia. I know the movie was made in the 70s and she was meant to be the very picture of the problematic lesbian character, seducing katya away from her heterosexual marriage and converting her to a life of sin, but I also believe that as much as she embodies this stereotype, she also subverts it by having her impact on katya be a positive one overall.
Goncharov and katyas marriage is shown to be a struggling one— I don’t think it’s loveless but circumstances have certainly had their effect on their relationship. Where Katya is tied down—by her marriage and by her involvement with the mafia and by her rigid adherence to societal norms, Sofia to her embodies freedom, and Sofia shows her that freedom by showing her that traditional values aren’t the only way. There’s always another option.
This is demonstrated in the scene where she asks katya to run away with her, showing again that there will always be another option, that she’s not limited to the frame that society has put her in. And to connect with someone so deeply, and to have them show you new meaning to life that you never thought possible— it’s everything. With Sofia, katya is no longer boxed in by her preconceived notions on what she thought life was and instead finds new richness in life with her.
And in the end, even after Sofia’s died, she’s still what gives katya the strength to go through with their plans and fake her own death, taking her life and death into her own hands and choosing freedom over all else.
it ties into the cyclical nature of the film and the film's whole thing about patterns/cycles and breaking them. goncharov tries (and ultimately fails) to break the cycle of violence but katya is such an interesting opposition to that bc through sofia she actually manages to get out of the life she's living. the idea of sofia as someone who was introduced as a throwaway side character, who was never meant to have such a big impact but instead ended up being the literal representation of the way out means so much to me

not to be Gonchposting 50 years late but I gotta get this off my chest
I genuinely dislike Goncharov x Andrey. Sofia x Katya is BY FAR the more interesting ship
But I think the real intrigue in relationships comes with Andrey (I mean obviously my fave's gotta be here...) and Katya. She's a constant overpowering force to him, domineering him. Maybe they wouldn't make a good ship but the dynamic is thrilling. I think it works both as a "this is really deep commentary" thing and also on the much more superficial "hehe hot woman dominating hot man" level.

HOMOEROTIC
Definition: "connected to or causing sexual desire for a person of the same sex" (Source: Cambridge English Dictionary)
Example: "Goncharov (1973) is an amazingly homoerotic film." (Source: Al B)
Tumblr media
Transcription:
• Meanwhile Katya has a really hard time adjusting to life in Italy
• She's really unhappy because she never wanted to move here in the first place and feels totally isolated and overwhelmed
• Her life becomes much better with the appearance of Sofia, a painter she meets at the local market [AL: This is without a doubt one of my favorite scenes: Katya is trying to buy an apple from a vendor but struggling with the language barrier. Sofia appears behind her and just says "mela" but Katya mishears and seems to think someone just walked up behind her and whispered the word "bella" (beautiful) in her ear. Sofia says "mela" one more time and points to the apple. Katya says "oh, grazie" and then Sofia just winks and walks off, like fakdlfjdfid. It's so short and only four (maybe three, technically) words are exchanged but people who ship Katya and Sofia—like myself—go absolutely feral for it.]
• The two become friends eventually and Katya ends up telling Sofia that while she used to love Goncharov, she doesn't have much hope for them as a couple anymore

Most have forgotten about the minor radio hit “Apples at the Market,” performed by the 80’s lounge singer Melissa Ling, but it’s an important part of the Goncharov musical canon! I dug up a demo for you guys - let me know if anyone has the radio version!
Melissa Ling is an Asian-American lounge singer who performed in cocktail bars and hotels for years, amassing a small but dedicated following before Illustrate Labels signed her in 1983. She was known for her plaintive voice and melancholy, poetic lyrics.
“Apples at the Market” was released in 1985. Though Ling never publicly acknowledged her song as a tribute to Scorsese’s film, it’s obviously written from Katya’s perspective about her relationship with Sofia - the title referencing that iconic scene, the themes of guilt and corruption, the “Sofia” mentioned in the chorus, and of course, the homoeroticism.
Lyrics under the cut:
Market square, you smile at me
You’re the one to set me free
You are young and I am broken
Getting tired of even hoping
Fingers round that scarlet skin
Bite the apple, taste my sin
Shouldn’t lead you down this road
But I’m so tired of being alone
Sofia, Sofia
You beautiful creature
You put all your trust in
Your future corruption
The gates of Heaven are closed for us
But it’s safer to be dangerous
Sofia, Sofia
I’m starting to need you

"A woman will coax the seeds from a pomegranate while a man would sooner beat them out with a wooden spoon. He may eat sooner, but the woman tastes the sweeter juices." - Sofia, Goncharov (1973)
