Multilingual Crows
[Disclaimer: I know little about the languages that the Grishaverse languages were based on. These are about my personal headcanons for the Grishaverse languages.]
• Kaz speaks Southern Kerch, but taught himself how to speak like a native of Ketterdam. His old accent and dialect still slips out on occasion when he’s comfortable. He is also attempting to learn Suli, although he claims it’s a “business venture.” (Everyone knows it’s not).
• Matthias speaks high Fjerdan and knows more Kerch slang and swear words than most of the others.
• Nina speaks all languages fluently and can hide her accent. However, when speaking with Inej in Suli, she often slips Ravkan words into her speech.
• Wylan is fluent in Kerch, and knows the basics of and some songs in Fjerdan.
• Inej speaks Suli, Ravkan, and Kerch. On occasion, she’ll tell Kaz a Suli proverb in Suli, both without realizing it and because it doesn’t translate into Kerch. He never corrects her.
• Jesper speaks Zemeni, Kerch, and bits and pieces of Kaelish.
And thus, the Crows have multiple conversations at once, in multiple different languages. Nina and Inej sitting on the couch in the sitting room of the Van Eck mansion, chatting animatedly in Ravkan and Suli. Matthias and Wylan sitting on the rug, having a casual conversation about their days in Fjerdan, while Wylan occasionally turns to Jesper and tells him off in Kerch. Jesper, being Jesper, trying to see how drunk he can get Kaz so that he can see his old accent come out. Kaz, by this point, is comfortable enough with his crows to let some of his armor down, and appeases Jesper eventually, falling back into the Southern Kerch dialect, most of which Jesper can’t understand. (Which only amuses Kaz more.)

Wylan: Hey Jes, can I borrow your keys? I lost mine.
Jesper, grabbing and throwing something from his pocket: Yeah sure, here.
Wylan: ...
Wylan: Jesper?
Jesper: What?
Wylan: This is an engagement ring...
Jesper, patting his pockets: STUPID CARGO PANTS AND THEIR STUPID POCKETS

Hi Yasi
KANEJ HEADCANNONS PLS
coming right uppp lissyy!!
˖ ⊹˚. 【 kanej headcanonss 】 .𖥔 ݁ ˖
I can't imagine Kanej being overly intimate, skin-to-skin wise, mostly bc of both their trauma with touching other people.
^^ Maybe simple things like Kaz doing Inej's hair, or tracing / kissing her faded Menagerie tattoo is the maximum they can go.
^^ (a kiss would be great tho).
Kaz likes cooking for Inej, knowing she doesn't usually eat eh hem speak for yourself man . Kaz makes sure every night he's with Inej she eats a hearty meal.
^^ Kaz's specialty being a warm hutspot with bread for her
Hugs. And more hugs. Its one of the only ways they can be intimate with each other without actually touching each other's skin.
^^ Also Kaz is way taller than Inej and I can totally imagine him being like "you're missing out on some great weather here, Inej"
Quality of time and Acts of Service are definitely their love language
Kaz (at some point) calling Inej his "beloved" >>>>
Inej makes sandwiches for Kaz like Jordie used to do for him.
Kaz easily gets jealous (and doesn't realise what the emotion is, he just knows he wants to go kill someone. real. bad.
****
requests are openn~!!
feel free to request more headcanons / fanfics of SoC
or any fandom on my masterlist~

A Wesper headcanon for today, lil angsty in places. They homeschool their kids because neither of them could imagine sending them away like some merchers do.
The Crows absolutely teach them highly inappropriate skills none of their peers will have. And it's lucky the mansion has such high walls in the garden because one of their kids is a Durast - plus Inej teaches knife throwing to the others & Jesper shooting of course - and that certainly helps with target practice fails.
When one of them wants to go study at Belendt School of Music, Wylan insists the whole family travels there to see them safely settled. Wylan stays a little longer as well, seeing the school & the city where he might have gone himself in a life that went a little differently.

Kaz, the entire soc: Wylan, you go with Jesper. Nina will go with Matthias, and Inej will go with me. Why? Because I said so.

each of the crow’s favorite music
Kaz: He “Doesn’t like listening to any of that nonsense”, but in private he half listens to reputation by Taylor swift and brutal by Olivia rodrigo and spends the other half of his time listening to Mother Mother.
Inej: I think she would be a pretty big Marina fan. I can’t justify this, I just get the vibes.
Jesper: Showtunes, showtunes, and showtunes. He also enjoys Taylor Swift, and will sometimes rap the MOST explicit songs he can think of just to make Wylan blush.
Wylan: I think he would enjoy Cavetown and Ricky Montgomery, I can just imagine him blasting Line Without a Hook at midnight. (Also when he’s in an angsty mood he likes Radiohead)
Nina: The original Swiftie. Her favorite album is Lover, then Speak Now. (Edit: Nina is also a Phoebe Bridgers and Mitski stan.)
Matthias: He doesn’t really enjoy music all that much, but sometimes he’ll listen to some Fjerdan songs bc they remind him of home.

headcanon that kaz has a quilt on his bed in the slat that his mom made when he was younger. it’s made from old work shirts that his dad and jordie had either outgrown or ripped beyond repair, stuffed with cotton and corn silk and warm beyond belief. it was one of the only things that jordie had managed to save from their time on the streets and when kaz had stumbled back into the alley that they both died in that day, the blanket was still wedged in the narrow crack between the buildings.
it had smelled like soot and a little bit like jordie.

The Crows’ Sibling Alignment
this is going to be ramble-y and probably only make half-sense but here we go.
Matthias is an eldest sibling. It’s canon, it’s obvious. He holds the weight of the world on his shoulders trying to be responsible in the group of people he’s been given.
Nina is a middle sibling with younger sibling traits. She had to fight for positive attention in the Little Palace, and learned that negative attention is still attention.
Inej is a youngest sibling. Ignoring the show, and taking a guess about Suli culture, I’d say she grew up around her cousins and they were all sort of raised together. Although she may not have any biological siblings, she was always the baby.
Kaz is a youngest sibling. No one else could have that much audacity.
Jesper is an only child with eldest sibling traits. Going from golden child to family disappointment is a pipeline 90% of eldest children have to go through. (Myself included). He puts a lot of pressure on himself, and wants to be good for his Da but he struggles.
Wylan is an only child. It’s canon, it’s obvious. But not only is he an only child, he’s a homeschooled only child.

Kaz being besties with Inej’s dad is something I love so much. Just imagine it.
Every time the Ghafa’s come to Ketterdam, they spend at least 3 hours playing cards together
Kaz telling him about his businesses and improvements he's made to the club (and him offering to help him make renovations)
Sharing stories about Inej
Him telling Kaz about tricks they performed for shows and Kaz tells him about similar stunts they did for heists
Him teaching Kaz little bits of Suli so he can surprise Inej
there's so many more I just LOVE the idea too much

what a mother wants
It’s here, it’s here! (And it’s here on ao3.) My latest Six of Crows fic has been published: nine thousand words on family and trauma, domesticity and angst, motherhood and marriage, sacrifice and self-identity. Just the heavy stuff, you know? I’d love to hear your thoughts on this one (even if your post-CK kanej headcanons are wildly different than my own; I’m here for the discourse).
fic summary:
“Your mother says you haven’t stepped into the practice tent once. Since when are you afraid to walk the wire?” Kaz demanded.
Since I realized what my daughter will lose if I fall, Inej thought.
She replied, “I’m not afraid. I simply want different things than I used to,” and willed herself to believe it was the truth.
Post-CK. Kaz and Inej are taking their three-year-old daughter to visit the Suli caravans for the first time, and Inej wants what all mothers want: for her child to be happy and safe. It is no surprise that her own mother wants the very same.
...
Before she and Kaz had the baby, Inej thought she knew the extent of fear.
She’d fought off rivals who outnumbered her five to one; climbed to dizzying, dangerous heights; pulled off impossible heists. She’d died in the belly of a slaver ship at the age of fourteen. Nothing, she thought, could be worse than the fear she had suffered then.
In the spring of her twenty-sixth year, Inej came to be with child—more often, though, she thought of the child as with her, safe and warm even in the final cold snaps of the season. There was something sacred about sharing the space of one body between them, knowing that she’d never been closer to another human except her own mother.
Soon enough, Inej knew her child would be forced to be without, divested of the inherent protections of pregnancy, born into the winter of an impossibly cold and cruel city. Most of the time, Inej’s fears regarding the inevitable separation were menial, manageable: What if the baby couldn’t latch? What if the baby wouldn’t sleep in her crib? What if the baby’s clothes weren’t warm enough to brave the Kerch freeze?
But there were far worse things than heavy rains and biting winds. Inej remembered the weight of bodies on top of her own, lips and teeth and tongues, heat and misery and unbearable guilt. What of those things?
And then a little girl was born to them one snow-covered day in Ketterdam—Lieze Rietveld, barely as long as Kaz’s palms when they pressed beneath her, cradling her in his hold. She was unbelievably tiny, arms and legs and fists and face all scrunched up like a butterfly’s wing just emerging from its chrysalis.
The fear became a tangible, intractable thing. It’s a girl, they’d told her as they first pressed the bloody, wriggling body to her chest. It was naive of her to sob in relief then, pressing tear-soaked lips to the filmy skin of her daughter’s forehead.
‘It’s a girl!’ resounded in Inej’s mind for months afterward. The longer it echoed, the more it felt like a warning.
read the entire one-shot here on ao3.

I have a lot of thoughts about Kaz brekker driving.
(Modern AU obviously.)
I just got my license, which is exciting but has also led to me having to figure out where to put my cane when I'm driving. Mostly I'll slide it into the passenger seat between the chair and the door so it doesnt rattle, but if I have passengers I have to toss it in the back or boot and grab it when I get out.
So, where would Kaz keep his? I like to think of Kaz as the dad of the group. He is always the driver and is too often roped into giving the others rides. Kaz is however less accommodating than me and would make them sit in the back like hes their goddamn uber driver while his cane keeps its rightful spot.
Except Inej. She is the only person allowed to sit in the passenger seat. The cane keeps it's spot, but Inej is always careful of it and catches it before it can fall out when she gets in.

You cannot convince me that Kaz-lover-of-magic-Brekker doesn't have a trick knife. And not just any old fake knife for the stage, this one comes preloaded with as much blood to spurt out as it can physically contain.*
All the Crows know it on sight because Kaz decided he wanted to add a 'I'll-betray-my-crew-for-the-right-price' triple-cross to his repertoire for plans and that trick only works if everyone is in on it.
*Jesper, of course, has not been able to resist fiddling with the knife despite knowing what it is and has on multiple occasions come out of Kaz's office covered in a fair amount of blood and saying something to the effect of 'Don't worry, it's not mine, it's Kaz's.'

A headcanon that I have is that although Inej went through many many difficult and debilitating things, one thing she never experienced, or just experienced to a certain extent, is starvation.
I feel like the only time she could have been starving was for the two(ish?) weeks she spent on the slavers' ship, but otherwise she was well fed. I think that the Suli, despite being seen as poor, had more than enough to sustain themselves, so Inej could not have been hungry with them. I also believe the one thing Heleen would provide properly for her girls would be food, because the Menagerie was a luxurious, expensive place and the clients would not want girls that looked unwell in terms of health or beauty(??).
On the other hand Kaz, he had a history of not having enough food. After getting swindled, he and Jordie barely had any food to eat at all, and I don't think it got that much better when Kaz started to work for gangs and steal. Because yes, he was a great thief, but it does not really seem like he would provide for himself with all the self destructive tendencies he keeps showing.
So anyways the thing is, I think that Kaz, in circumstances when there would not be enough food or simply when he was charged with getting food or cooking, would make sure that Inej always ate a lot, or enough for her not to feel too hungry. I think that he would sacrifice his own portion if it meant Inej got to eat. And yes, it would partially be out of love, but also because he would not want her to experience something as horrible as having an empty stomach for days on end and having to eat literal trash.
This is not something everybody would like to see or believe, so please try to take this with a grain of salt. I don't not wish for Kaz to feel miserable, or be disordered, it is just something that I can see happening.
(Have I incorporated it into one of my fics? Yes, yes I have. Am I going to use it in a fic again? Yes, probably.)
