Points that I feel need a little elaboration:
I am so normal about them: I use the word "normal" as a synonym for "utterly obsessed with" and "absolutely love and adore". (I don't like the word in itself, hence, the only context I use it in, is this. But that is another story.)
*puts them in a salad spinner*: as in, the salad spinner is my brain, and he keeps rotating in it at high centrifugal force.
Canon isn't real if I don't look at it and That's a solid design right there: Detco Canon is... As much as I love it, I think we can agree it has its shortcomings/issues, and one of them is coming up. These two points go hand in hand at this moment because LOOK AT HIM!!! LOOK AT HIM!!! THIS MAN IS A BABY!!! LOOK AT HIM, HE'S PERFECT!!! THE SPIKY HAIR!!! THE SHAPES!!! THE COLOUR PALETTE!!! HE'S SO CUTE!!
I resonate with this particular video: his new design in the anime (partly thanks to the general Square-and-Pointy-fication) is just... THEY HAD THE PERFECT MAN. IT'S A CRIME. Bless that he is at least still cute in the manga, even if not the same way as in the early anime. The sharp cheekbones and soft looking hair have their charm.
My point is: THIS!!!! MAN!!! IS!!! A BABY!!!!
Literally I would kiss them and I want to BITE them: he makes me go FERAL with LOVE, and makes me feel like I want to gnaw on something or eat a whole fridge or scream endlessly into a pillow. I wouldn't do it to HIM (I'll leave that to Satou Miwako), but generally, the feeling is there. (Okay, I'll be honest, I would totally give him forehead, cheek, or hair kisses.)
To close his section, have one of my favourite bits about this Baby Of A Man. That poll was absolutely right about him, THE ULTIMATE BABYGIRL (and Malewife TM).

LOL I DIDN'T EXPECT TO GET A BINGO, EVEN WITH THE FREE SPACE HAHA
Some points are the same as for Takagi, but here is elaboration on the ones that don't match:
Bastard, A Beast Unleashed and They didn't get bullied enough: let's be real. He's an Absolute Menace. And I sort of love that about him. Highly competent (competency makes me go weak), and if that is not scary (and hot) I don't know what. And sometimes he also goes too far (lifting skirts is not okay at all, Kaito) and needs someone to put a leash on him (or kick a soccer ball at him/chase him in a classroom). I feel that sometimes he needs a bit of bullying a challenge, to think about things. And again, honesty: I love seeing him suffer a bit, I love his Panic Moments LOL. Not in a mean way. But I also love how kind he is; the baseball chapter in the MK manga has my heart, and the Clock Tower Heist, and the Red Tear chapter... Not to mention the Nightmare arc. He cares about people and making others happy.
I feel I went on a tangent here. Onto the bastard bit: he CAN BE SUCH A BASTARD AND I LOVE THAT ABOUT HIM TOO. Two of my favourite bits of Bastardry from him include 1) HOW HE DISGUISED AS RAN AND HOW HE BAITED SHINICHI AT THE VERY END OF THAT ENCOUNTER and 2) THE WAY HE SENDS SHINICHI CAREENING IN THE SIDECAR LIKE IT'S NOTHING (but also Shinichi getting right back at him and setting fire to the fckin fuel.) Pure Bastard Energy.
I want their gender: I love the way he is just so free-spirited about how he dresses/disguises. And I love the thought of him and Aoko doing outfit swaps (I blame that competition in MK for these. Also look at these delightful posts on the topic).
Canon isn't real if I don't look at it: I have... issues, with canon, you could say. Like the way he has no support system, especially bothers me. I would like to see his character treated with more care (be it MK or DetCo). I live for good character development, and I crave that for him.

Fun fact: I've been in love with koalas ever since I got a keyholder plushie from relatives in Australia when I was like... in kindergarten? Or early elementary?
Also don't worry, *puts on sunglasses* I wouldn't have mentioned animals, if I thought I couldn't work with them.

I am so normal about them: I'm not as obsessed as I used to be but I'm eternally fond of koalas. Did you know their fingerprints are so similar to us they could be mistaken for human fingerprints? Or how they spend most of their time sleeping because the eucalyptus they consume is toxic? Or how they can actually swim well? Or how they are literally surviving by being Dumb As Shit because Being Dumb Saves Energy? Yeah, I'm totally normal about them.
*projects onto them like a mf* and I want their gender: Oh to be a koala, just existing, sleeping, sometimes waking up to eat some eucalyptus, then going right back to sleep. I want that.

A Beast Unleashed: another MENACE OF NATURE. You cannot let him roam free, he finds trouble like it's Breathing. Also love it when he goes ballistic. Or when he shows how competent he is. Like GOD. HE'S AMAZING, and he's a danger to criminals and himself, mostly.
Everyone else if wrong about them: not EVERYONE, just... some people. We agreed with a friend that some of our issues in portrayal lies with the fandom sort assigning him traits that Hakuba has, but not Shinichi (Hakubification). Of course, people can have their fun with it, but it's not for me and have my own opinions on the matter.
Canon isn't real if I don't look at it: again, DetCo has issues. Like the lack of continuity/ erased character development, or not bringing up issues ever again, and the like. Early DetCo was GOOD at these, and I miss those times.
That's a solid design right there and I fuck with this aesthetic so hard: HE IS!!!! SO SHAPED!!!!! SO ROUND!!! (or at least used to be) THE GENTLE CURVES OF HIS FACE!!! THE SILLY HAIR!!!! NOT TO MENTION HIS FCKIN WARDROBE!!!! I'M OBSESSED WITH HIM!!! Also, I have a huge thing for blue eyes and dark hair combination, not to mention the glasses... I'm fckin weak for glasses... god. He just hits all the right spots in my heart and brain. (Not to mention his personality, I WANT TO CRY I LOVE HIM SO MUCH-)
They didn't get bullied enough: I live for others teasing Gremlin Child. It's not quite bullying (never HURT HIM FOR REAL, I'LL CRY), but he needs to be TEASED MORE FOR SURE. I guess Bastardry also fits into this, that's good too.
SQUEAK: sometimes he is just so DUMB I want to SQUISH HIM HARD OR SHAKE HIM. I LOVE HIM, I SO DO, even if he is an idiot at times. God. I love him.
Literally I would kiss them and I want to BITE them: HIS CHEEKS ARE SO PERFECTLY ROUND I WANT TO CHOMP ON THEM. ALSO ALL THE KISSES TO HIM!!!!! BABY BOY!!!! GIVE HIM ALL THE KISSES!!!! AND HUGS TOO!!!

You got any unpopular opinions ? For an example I wished Erza had an scar across her eye , wished Natsu kept his long hair (bonus if he put it in a ponytail 😍) it be cool seeing Gray wearing ear piercing 👀 as for Lucy maybe blue eyes so she doesn’t look to much like her mother (that and her dad has blue eyes ) as much as I love plue it be cool if she summoned Pyxis more (that and I think he be a very useful spirit for plot purposes🤷♀️) Wendy miss her Bob hair style , exceeds another arc ?

I have quite a few, but generally, I super agree with all of what you’ve said. Lucy having different colour eyes would be cool too! Honestly, she, Layla, and Anna should have more differences than clothing... like, give Layla some wrinkles, like she had in her first appearance in Phantom Arc. Hell, give her longer hair maybe? Like, floor length kind of long that is always tied up elaborately? So Lucy can keep the shoulderlength? And Anna would be interesting with short hair, because back then wars and all, it would fit. I would love to see Anna having tattoos or scars, tattoos maybe related to spirits would be cool! Kind of like the Aquarius mark that Lucy has around her collar, but related to the CSK... or maybe even related to acnologia, it would add so much potential lore.
I want more characters to have piercings and tattoos! Very few characters have non-guildmark tattoos. One of them is Laxus, and it looks super cool. More characters should have stuff like that!
On the topic of guild marks, though, I do really think it’d have been cute to see Lisanna have her guild mark at her ankle or calf, instead of the upper thigh. I know it’s to match Mira, but a spot unique to her would be nice. Alas, she isn’t really written well or at all, so oh well.
I think it’d be cool if Erza had an eye scar, definitely! I also think a lot about her having her mark on her back, the same place as Grandpa Rob, instead of her arm. I actually want all of the TOH kids, including O6, to have permanent injuries or scars of some sort, like Jellal having a permanent wrist injury from getting hung by them for weeks. Millianna and Sho being underdeveloped/stunted from malnutrition. Maybe Erza should get tattoos to cover some of the worst scars she’s had, and it would be sweet to see that it matches someone in the guild, like Gray or Cana for example. Maybe they got it with her because she was apprehensive of the needle?
Oh! Speaking of Erza! I want her to stand on the hilt of her sword and ride it to fly. I want her to have a sword that can do that, because she wanted to fly in the sky when she was in the tower. She should definitely have an ability that lets her fly, not with wings, but while sitting or standing on something like a cute witch!
So, I want to say I love the long, curly hairstyle that Sherry, Meredy, Evergreen, Cana, and Juvia have. But I hate it, because Mashima seems to think that’s the only ‘glowup’ a girl can have. Seriously, keep Juvia’s short hair, that was so cute! Laki has similar hair, but at least she has a ponytail. Meredy just looks like Sherry but with a pastel colouring? Evergreen should have kept the bun. My problem isn’t that it’s not pretty-- they’re gorgeous and I love that hairstyle so much... but add this on to Cana and you have at least half a dozen girls that all look exactly the same in a black and white medium. This is not good character design variety at all! Among these type of hairstyle redesigns, I think Romeo’s look stupid with the chestnut-ish shape whatever, and somehow, Kinana has turned out to look exactly like Ur at the end of the show?? Seriously they should have all just stayed in their initial designs. It’s not like Natsu or Erza changed, why did they need so many pointless changes? Why did Vijeeter turn middle eastern? Why did Jura change religions??
I was talking about hair. But my point is that yes. everyone who had short hair(/long hair for Natsu) at some point should have kept it that way, including Wendy, that was so important to her development. One of the things Mashima tries to do but fails is give characters important ‘development haircuts’ to mark a huge turning point or growth. A good example is Sakura’s haircut in Naruto. Mashima fails to give nearly the same amount of impact because 1. Lucy’s hair changes so often, her 1y timeskip long hair just feels like a new hairstyle rather than ‘oh, she’s grown up now!’. and 2. Wendy’s hair at the end of the FACE confrontation would have been perfect as her peak statement of resolve, and her short hair should have been kept as a physical reminder of that fact. But they immediately gave the long hair back, so we cannot physically mark down the point where Wendy arrived at the climax of her development. She doesn’t look like she’s changed at all. This is manga, You can’t just tell us things and forget about it, you have to show it to us and mark it down with a permanent reminder somewhere, anywhere, like Gray’s brow scar after Galuna, Erza’s new armor design after TOH, and Juvia’s complete style change after TOH, just to timestamp this change for the readers. Instead of committing to these changes, Mashima gave Wendy’s hair back immediately and Juvia’s hair back after the peak of her arc in Fantasia. Instead, Mashima gave and kept ‘I’ve grown up now’ hairstyles for Sherry and Evergreen, both of whom hardly got any focus beyond some resolve lines twenty chapters after the reveal of the new hair. Mashima... please...
Other unpopular opinions... in general I hate the way Lucy’s magic is written. She just keeps spamming spirits back and forth. She runs out of magic, then she learns how to summon Leo without a key. And then she learns how to summon two spirits back and forth! Then she learns Star Dresses, so now she can spam different dresses back and forth! Like, Mashima. What the hell, man? We emphasize so much on her not having enough magic to open too many gates a day, but instead of trying to work around that, we just keep finding loopholes (Loke coming himself, Star Dresses) so we can keep doing it anyway. What’s the point? ‘Lucy does not have a lot of magic’ is emphasized so much as her magic’s main drawback, and yet, she never attempts to work around it. She just keeps doing it to look cool, and then when she runs out of magic, ‘oh no, I’m out of magic!’ like, what did you expect to happen? Mashima, don’t do her dirty like that! She’s smarter than this! Seriously what happened to the whip... I love the idea of Celestial Spirit magic so much, but after Edolas, Lucy was devolved into a Pokemon Master, and none of the spirits themselves ever got any development ever again. it’s such a shame.
Sorry. Rambled about that again. But that aside.
The silver spiritttttss!! Like, I don’t really care for Plue, we all know he’s just around to fill up panel space. I don’t care that Plue isn’t contributing to this story because Plue is just an Easter egg, non-talking plushie of a creature, and doesn’t need to. But seriously, Mashima only cares about Plue and Horologium! We should have seen more CS mages and Silver spirits over the course of the story. I don’t care if we see three thousand more Nicola, I want to see a random kid hugging one in the background because Plue is apparently a popular pet spirit. I just want to see CS having more significance in this world. Let Lucy fight another CS mage, why are there no silver-exclusive CS mages? Does anyone remember how damn cool Caelum was? There’s more Caelum out there since it’s a silver key, so why is no one using it?! T^T
Also... this is a real unpopular opinion I think... but I wish Loke kept his furry hoodie style. The suit doesn’t really suit him, and clashes with Capricorn. The suit feels more ‘Blue Pegasus’, you know? I think he looks badass and really cool in the suit and I go hype seeing him in it, but I also feel like the punk, comfy hoodie style suits him more as the ‘Loke’ that is Lucy’s treasured friend, you know? He doesn’t have to stick to professional even though he’s gone back to being a Celestial Spirit. I feel it’d be nice. Though I don’t feel very strongly about this one, it’s just a thought I’ve had.

unpopular opinion: All Might telling him he couldn’t be a hero would NOT have made him turn to the villain’s side. I reread that scene before I started writing my fic, and not only does All Might outline all his reasons for saying “no” before he actually says no, but the horror on Izuku’s face says that he got the message. once he’s down from the building we even get a scene with introspection where Izuku resolves himself to living a normal life, and we all know how strong the boy’s resolve is! He deadass probably would have wound up as CEO of some company.

ur "didn't need to be 7" theory. pls continue i am now curious
it's not really a theory but I've said it a million times that there's never needed to be a group of 7. ultimately the prophecy only named 2 things, but 5 is a lot more flexible with the other lines.
anyway this opinion has been cultivated over the past few months so there's different variations, but here's my current thoughts on the lines of prophecy:

oath/breath reminds me a lot of piper and her charmspeak. this would've been good had this been a promise in tlh... which she makes a couple anyway. plus it adds the possible layer of death to the lost trio which jason and leo already had. never mind the fact that they all died in tlh anyway 💀 (midas and then hera)
And foes bear arms to the Doors of Death
doors of death makes the most sense for hazel, considering she's pluto and she was literally dead. 'foes bear arms' reminds me of frank, the mars kid who is the only one who has lasting conflict with a greek (leo) in the series, but also the warring gods in his head!!!! if you want, u can consider franks shape shifting as a connection to monsters. additionally, his stick ties him to doors of death even more so
tbh, i have rewritten hoo a LOT of times in a LOT of ways in my head. i think annabeths quest is AMAZING and i love it a lot, but it's also not related to the great prophecy. (also unrelated but it makes more sense 2 me that reyna had that quest but that's a different post) i think the best way to handle percy/annabeth is by having them be older mentors who then disappear (tartarus) and the 5 need to figure things out on their own.
as a group, these 5 make more sense anyway: piper/leo are greeks, hazel/frank are romans, and jason is stuck in the middle as reluctant leader. there's a million ways those 5 could have conflict (like leaving nico in the jar? pipers reluctant love vs franks reluctant war? jasons loyalty? mom issues? fire vs stick? sammy if u will). there's just so much there ALREADY that when riordan added the other two, he failed to pay attention to what needed attention— the new and very engaging characters!!!!
percy and annabeth would've been great mentors (maybe) who now feel the frustration of luke and recognizing these kids are so young. in the way percy passes the series off to apollo in toa, is how i think hoo should've went. but ah well, i didn't write hoo. there's a million ways to rewrite hoo but i always felt this was a stronger way

My Thoughts on Castlevania S3
So I cant sleep, I've binged this series twice now & I really need to get this out. For context on me as a person, I am an LGBT+ WOC (specifically Asian & bisexual). Castlevania is my favourite game series + the reason why I pursued Game Design as my career. The show means the world to me & I thoroughly enjoyed s3 for the most part. I acknowledge the flaws & these r just MY opinions, they do not reflect the other mods intentionally in anyway.
The art + animation was so CLEAN. There was not one scene that did not take my breath away. The attention to detail was phenomenal I have no words to describe it.
Some of the best fight scenes ever just ridiculous, it's like john wick. The action is upped every installment + its just so CLEAN
The entire team puts so much time + effort Into making Sypha such an enjoyable badass it's so amazing. I am never disappointed with her, never ever.
The lesbians. Striga & Morana, god I wish that were me.
Isaacs character arc was so good. Like the budget really went to Sypha + Issac this season LOL
Sumi + Takka, they meant so much to me. I love them, I really do. I cant say I'm not hurt seeing them at the end. I'm actually very hurt, my heart aches. I never thought I'd get to see representation like that in a series that I loved but felt idk invisible to. LGBT Asians in a historical setting outside of Asia, it was just...a dream for me. I fell in love w/ them instantly & I think that's why I tend to over look their faults a lot.
But when you see yourself on screen in something you've dedicated years to & you're just finally seen its...its so hard. The last time I felt this full was Shiro from V*ltr*n and we know how that shit went down. Idk I'm happy for what I recieved, grateful even, for however short it was. I loved their characters, i love sumi + takka i just wish they got a better ending. They all deserved better

So you ever try to wrap your brain around Yachiru being Kenpachi's zanpakutō? It seems to violate all known (manga-canon) mechanics.
So, to be honest, that particular plot twist hit the note in my head that says “Yes, this is pleasing and not entirely unexpected to me!” I think it’s the fact that the idea of his zanpakutou being embodied this whole time made more sense than ::gestures vaguely at all of Yachiru:: this.
I don’t exactly remember, but I think I may have been spoiled on this one--I got spoiled on a lot of the Bleach endgame, and that always affects the way a plot twist lands, so please take my opinion with that grain of salt.
I think there were a lot of hints along the way-- that although Yachiru is very, very strong and somewhat bloodthirsty herself, she always seems more interested in seeing Zaraki gets the fights that he wants, and watching them raptly, deeply invested in his happiness. She doesn’t actually act like a child, she acts like someone would expect a child to act-- mischievous and silly, but she does not grow and explore or, most importantly, assert her personhood, the way a real person does. She never seeks to grow stronger, or to fight for herself. She wears the lieutenant’s badge and goes to the meetings, which she neither complains about, nor takes any interest in. A real child would either not put up with this shit, or seek to be taken seriously in this role (try to imagine young Byakuya, for example, being named a lieutenant). Most importantly: She is constantly trying to give him directions and they end up lost every time. We thought it was a running gag, but it was a metaphor.
It also seems to me that the other child characters in Bleach grow and age at times when their powers are developing. We see Rukia, Renji, Gin, Rangiku, and Shuuhei as powerless children, and then they age to teens when their powers develop. Toshirou is definitely seen as a smaller child in his Rukongai flashbacks, and it’s implied that he is currently at in impasse with his powers, having difficulty with the upper levels of his bankai. Even so, though his body is stuck in an adolescent state, he has the faculties and personality of an adult. Yachiru, if I am figuring things correctly, is older than Rukia and Renji. It seems like she must be an enormous outlier in the Bleach universe, and it’s frankly weird that, say, Yamamoto wouldn’t take a greater interest in her (unless he knows exactly what she is, and I suspect that both he and Unohana both do).
Unless I’ve missed something, we hardly know anything about zanpakutou-spirit dynamics within the Bleach manga canon. As far as I know, we only ever see two-- Zangetsu and Zabimaru. I think it’s safe to say that Zangetsu already violates all known normal mechanics. I also want to point out that I was a lot more pissed when Zangetsu turned out to be Yhwach (or whatever that was, please no one explain it to me I don’t want to think about it). It was telescoped well enough, but it poisoned a character who had always been there for Ichigo as a mentor and source of strength and it gave me the same yucky feeling as when they killed off Han Solo-- I do not like this. This does not feel right or enhance the story.
We don’t get a whole lot of Zabimaru either-- they can manifest on their own, and do so in order to bother Renji. They seem to be a fairly simplistic being-- they want to fight and be strong and are impatient with Renji’s (very reasonable) desire to take a minute to think things out.
Nobody asked, but I feel like it might be helpful if I unleashed my personal headcanon on Where Zanpakutou Come From. In the Zanpakutou Spirits Arc, the episodes are prefaced with a voiceover that says that zanpakutou are born and die with their shinigami, and I am sorry, anime filler arc, I reject this. One of my favorite Bleach phrases, which seems like it should it could have come from some angsty hurt-comfort fanfic, is “There are no ghosts in Soul Society.” (it actually came from a filler arc episode where Ikkaku, Nanao and Hanatarou get lost in the sewer). But I think there are! When shinigami are killed and reborn in the Living World, presumably, it is as a normal human with no powers. I like to think that some essence of their power and their zanpakutou are left behind, free-floating, nameless, formless, but with some distillation of the principles that guided their shinigami’s life. This ur-zanpakutou attaches itself to a young, spiritually strong person, and becomes intertwined with their soul. They develop a form based on the thoughts and memories and hopes and fears of their shinigami, and their names and specific powers are born of the union of zanpakutou and shinigami. Noble souls often get zanpakutou passed down from previous generations, who take the form of a grandparent, or form that their grandparents zanpakutou had. For kids from the Rukon, I think that most zanpakutou spirits takes the form of a barely remembered mother from the Living World, or a particularly frightening woodcut from a favorite storybook. As an aside, this theory also explains why almost every Rukongonian shinigami we see died as a child-- it’s easier for a free floating zanpakutou spirit to bond with a child’s developing psyche. It’s also a reminder of one more way that Zaraki himself is an outlier.
Zaraki is a really messed-up guy, I think we’re all on the same page there. Like, he just really needs a shit-ton of therapy, I can’t even start. He was a feral murder-child, and I think he saw Unohana as a mother-figure who rejected him. Unlike Ichigo, who needs a wise, experienced mentor to guide him through his warrior journey, Zaraki needs validation that he is a Normal Guy with Normal Murder Thoughts and Feelings, so his subconscious shapes his zanpakutou into another feral murder-child to love him and be his family. Zaraki doesn’t know how little girls act-- pink hair seems good? Stuffy people hate kids, right? It makes perfect sense that Yachiru would go fuck around with Byakuya. Zaraki finds all of Yachiru’s antics hilarious-- the names she makes up for people, the way she climbs all over Ichigo, her general proclivity for going ham. Zaraki is an incredibly simplistic person. My favorite Zaraki parts of Bleach are where you think he is about to get real deep and have some sort of insight, and it turns out to be “I’m gonna stab you, but I’m gonna use both hands” or this entire problem-solving process I’ve pasted in below, which ends in him finding Tousen by letting Tousen stab him. He’s just stupid, bless his heart, and having a murder gremlin for a guiding light just... tracks?
The weirdest thing about Yachiru is that she has her own zanpakutou. I spent about 10 minutes thinking about it, though, and decided that she’s just a recursion, and that the weird feeling I get thinking about her is exactly the way I feel about writing a function that calls itself, and I find that little paradoxical frisson to be kinda cool, actually. The second weirdest thing about Yachiru is that there does not seem to be any connection, thematically, between Yachiru and Nozarashi. After he finally learns his sword’s name, I would have liked to see Zaraki have a trip to his inner world (like Ichigo does, in the midst of battle) where he meets an adult spirit who has qualities of both Yachirus (which he absolutely does not recognize) and that there is some interesting explanation of Nozarashi’s special abilities. To be honest, I couldn’t even remember what they were. Kenpachi has always been one of the strongest Bleach characters and so much about him is just iconic, and then his bankai was just completely bland and unmemorable, with no symbolism whatsoever. Lame.

HYUNJAE - okay so audio cues... if you listen to the beginning there’s a sound of a bomb going off before the music starts ? and that ties into the dystopian / cyborg aesthetics that jump out at me of course, but what i immediately thought of was their no air perfo ? like we know hyunjae in the no air mv got that shot where he’s laying in the bathtub filled with water but also their kingdom performance with it also had those underwater shots ! so i think it ties into that... i feel like we saw in gen z, he’s a very straightforward person he says things on his mind which can come off as blunt but he thinks it’s better than not saying it ? which is interesting bc i think that speaks to his self- determined personality, he’s much more inclined to do whatever it takes to get something done, which i think falls perfectly in line with the “make your own air” phrase that he gets, if it’s something he needs he makes it himself, in a situational sense methinks u.u
JUYEON - JUYEON’S DJSKHDG i’m waiting for dri’s essay but in essence we see the gen z “juyeon is not such a good boy” shot and these text bubbles that pop up that say “sexy” “you so hot” “such a bad boy” and tbh i like this ‘concept’ ? for him better than his gen z one ? it’s not bc of the concept itself but i like the idea that he can “make your own character” as in he has the capability and power to be whoever he wants to ! you see him throwing white paint at the gen z canvas and i think ?! that’s symbolic of like a fresh canvas ! of remaking himself to whatever he wants bc the canvas is now blank again thanks to the white paint and flowers usually indicate spring ? so renewal and stuff like that ! i really like his, it’s also fun word play on “character” which has been juyeon’s intro in tbz (bc his name sounds like main character in korean) but yea :o ! i really love his the idea he can just repaint / paint over a literal image of him gives it the possibility of becoming smth new and that’s so so cool
CHANGMIN - SCREEEEECH okie um oh boy um *windows shutting down noises* this was so so so very different from his gen z stuff but i actually think BOTH are equally perfect for him ? the way that he set up the sparklers and neon lights on this very obviously trashy and kind of rundown rooftop with the cityline behind him is so ?!?!? LITERALLY making his own stage as his tagline goes, sort of like how the physical stage itself does not matter but rather it’s changmin himself that makes the stage special ! i talked about this in gabi’s set that i rbed ;-;/ but changmin puts a lot A LOT of stake in his position as a dancer it means almost everything to him as a form of expression from what i can see ? so he’s always trying his best to put forward the best performance possible and seeing this segment makes me feel like he’s doing just that ! pouring himself into it to make his stage pls i care him
HAKNYEON - god i’m a jusadan but just u.u rest in peace me, i’ll ... T_T be kind of honest this one confuses me a little ? i have assumptions and i feel like i know ... quite a bit about haknyeon (LMAO) my best guess is it has smth to do with self assurance ...? the way he’s framed and the fact that he’s sitting on a bed in the middle of a church surrounded by candles gives me christ figure symbolism (where my ap english takers at :/) and the light that perfectly frames him in a halo gives me angel vibes too, but the tagline of “make your own romance” paired with him kissing his reflection makes me think it’s about self love ;;;; from what i can tell haknyeon has always been someone who really likes feeling validated and praised for the stuff he does well, which he does for himself a lot of the times too ! but sometimes i think the self assurances he compliments himself with is more for reassuring himself rather than bragging (which i think people misinterpret) so it’s more about becoming the person he wants to fully love and being happie with himself which *tears* i might be reading too much into who knows i just love him ok ... KEBINNN - i know !!! dri mentioned this in my gifset tags but ! kev on kpop daebak (? was it) or smth mentioned how he strives to keep a childlike wonderment for the world around him, which is a reason why i think he loves drawing and sound / music production, he talked in a fancafe post once about an artist who turned mediocre everyday objects into art and he said he really loves that sense of wonderment so peter pan who “never grows up” is actually perfect for his worldview ahhhh T^T also kev really likes disney lmao, the way he’s doing this outside in this “neverland” garden on a balcony which is a part of this very typical apartment backed by a typical city bg also i believe ties into this turning a mediocre everyday thing into smth wonderful through his sense of childlike wonderment and his tagline of “make your own fantasy” (i also care him a lot this concept >>>>>>) and keeps to his referencing movie plotlines like he did in gen z jddkfj
SUNWOO - i also mentioned this in my tags on sunu’s set but this gives me 100 degrees vibes which i still to this day think is one of the most “sunwoo” vibe things ever, it’s a lot of him having fun and doing his own thing, and mixes both more mature and youthful aspects together in a way that i’d only ever describe as sunwoo vibes LMAO like the roller skating around and all the soap bubbles ! cute and youthful ! the crop top and celine wasitband (don’t laugh at me we all noticed) more mature and a callback to his gen z look methinks U.u, think sunwoo has always been a more go-with-the-flow or do whatever he feels like doing sort of person and so “make your own vibe” fits well with him in that sense to me
SANGYEON - .... *silence* *more windows shutting down noises* *jess.exe has stopped working* OKAY i feel like ! sangyeon’s is also more self explanatory :p i love the juxtaposition of boxing AND the arcade type fighter games ?? like both require very different sets of skills i feel like one is more physical the other is more mental ? but both require adapting to changes whether in the game or the boxing ring which as leader sangyeon would know a lot about, esp being flexible and quick to respond to different situations, and the “make your own glory” i feel is maybe more on the nose, but tbz are this man’s pride and joy you can see it literally anywhere and for him, as leader, to have made it this far with tbz, winning rtk and building their popularity through their hard work and efforts really is building his own glory and i just HHHHHHHHHH
YES EYYSFDHSHF CHANHEE YES - i said it in the tags of my srb before deleting it so i’ll just repeat it here but CHOI CHANHEE !!!!! this detail i didn’t quite process first watch was the continuous flashing of lights in all his scenes, like ... from the shots and the set it looks REALLY empty ?? but the flashing seems to indicate cameras and photos being taken of him despite there being no people we can really see in any of the shots ? WHICH IS SO COOL i think the implication is like “all eyes on him” type which SO TRU i love that idea, like i said the walking past the wedding dresses ? v heavily implies fashion designer which i think you mentioned mar :o ! and i see it in the sense of his tagline “make your own stereotype” bc white wedding dresses are the very traditional / typical choice and obviously feminine in stereotypes, whereas chanhee is wearing a SUIT which is all black in a very clean b/w set with no color which i feel is very stereotypically MASCULINE and the glasses too, it’s such an interesting contrast of his “stereotypically feminine” features (in my view) with very masculine symbols, like glasses we usually associate with more soft hearted / meek stereotypes ? but the geometric shape of the windows and again his suit seems to indicate the very opposite ? it’s a mixing of stereotypes which i think is the point, by putting those together he quite literally makes his own stereotype and puts on the crown while the cameras continue flashing while pointed at him AHHHHHHHHHHHHH
YOUNGHOON - okie might have less to say about this one :o i feel like both hak’s and younghoon’s i don’t see the connections quite as readily but ! i think it’s interesting that his tagline is “make your own classic” but then in the scenes itself he has a flip phone ??? with an antenna (okay boomer /j JDHFKFG JK PLS) and a teddy bear while in PERIOD stylized clothing and setting where those two things are more modern / contemporary in origin (but also not modern enough bc ,,, it’s a flip phone LOL) like 90s kid vibes ? you know but as an emperor in the joseon era haha :p while eating shrimp chips and reading a (comic ?) book, like idk too much of what it means but it’s a cool dichotomy LOL, think it might also tie into actor ! hoon bc it’s make your own classic and i think acting has become a very important aspect to him :o after seeing what he’s capable of in love revolution and his atbz video so it’s interesting u.u (need help w/ this one)
JACOB - think my explanation in han’s set’s tags didn’t really make sense so lemme ... reexplain LOL,,, so ! similar to his gen z video ? like he’s talked about how difficult it is to open up about his own feelings etc. and he said it’s less bc he realizes he needs to but rather just to make other people feel more comfortable when it comes to understanding him, and like the whole breaking the mirror with his reflection in the wanna be angry jacob, it’s about freeing himself to the point he can express the emotions he wants to ! in gen z it was about being able to be angry when he felt that way instead of being tied by his image of being just nice ? and in the video with his pilot uniform not only does he control the ride but he also rides on it himself ! quite literally making his own freedom (symbolically), a sort of realizing he can free himself ? from what’s been tying him down and i think the really big smile he has while riding it just comes to show how he wants to feel :,))) (jacob bae i care you)
ERIC - last one :p AHHH this is one of my favs too, the quite literal “make your own pride” I LOVE IT ! sooo i think the biggest takeaway i got was that of course in this video his “pride” is symbolized by the hot pink car (that he’s going to pick up his christmassy date in of course u.u if he has a license which he does n- his driver’s license in this was literally his aaa / boy version of reveal photo which in no dmv anywhere would a license picture be allowed to look that good-) and LITERALLY when he finished and takes it for a joy ride while sitting on the roof he’s STILL covered in the dirt and grime stains ! from working on it ! which i think is so symbolic ! it’s my favorite detail actually, he literally put sweat into this car which is his pride and now that he’s finally riding around in it, it feels accomplishing ! his pride ! love that, also when he’s grabbing a stub from that flyer i noticed he chose “youth” over the others (which was like .... ca$h, beauty, ice cream, hamburger...) which i think also just indicates that despite all this hard work he put in he still cherishes his youth and still lets that be a huge part of who he is (i mean pink car so of course) so idk i think it’s very neat go bestie mwah

What’s alan’s opinion of the other main earth green lanterns: hal, john, guy, and kyle? I think the consensus is that almost everyone hates guy, and alan didn’t seem to look like he liked hal too much either from the comics you posted earlier. He seems to have a good relationship with kyle maybe? But didn’t kyle date his daughter? And i’ve never seen anything with john and alan lol. So does alan actually like any of the other lanterns?

i’m assuming you know alan’s not in any way, shape or form related to the glc? while he’s definitely ran into the gang over the years out of pure necessity, he doesn’t know them in any particularly notable way and almost definitely wouldn’t consider any of them a friend (though jury’s out on whether he considers anyone currently alive a friend but that’s a whole other subject). essay incoming!
1) hal jordan
i haven’t actually posted any comics today but i’m assuming you’re talking about these panels from dc first: green lantern/green lantern (2002) #1?
i think this is actually my all time favourite and maybe definitive take on alan’s relationship with hal! it’s actually, as far as i’ve been able to find, the literal only comic to analyse & understand vital pieces of alan’s history that would tint any interactions with the glc -- he was forced out of heroics by huac and can’t help a vague feeling of jealousy about the fact that hal’s so instantly well-liked, not to mention his explicit worries that he’s no longer “the right man for the job”. beyond that, i think it’s also important to note that early days hal is the literal picture perfect definition of a hero! as much as his fly-boy-ness can be grating to people like, say, bruce or alan, he’s very likeable and the perfect candidate for the necessary PR of heroism. alan is... not. even on his best days, his temper either gets the best of him or he comes across as tremendously cold & distant. his dislike of hal is very tied up in these feeling of inadequacy
that being said, after parallax happens, alan is one of the very few people in hal’s corner. not in a major way and god forbid alan ever thinks to comfort anyone but i think as a man who’s lost it weekly for the past eighty years and who understands what their kind of power might make one capable of, he’s faintly sympathetic. in jsa’s (1999) redemption lost arc (#60-#62), he tries to be there for hal in some capacity
and even asks bruce to give hal another chance (no luck there)
while in jsa (1999) #77 he attempts some previously undiscovered form of trying to relate to someone via pointing out that hal’s life might be falling apart but you know what his real problem is? that alan was never there for his kids.
so, i would say alan dislikes hal far less than he dislikes guy & kyle and that’s a major compliment coming from him. their relationship is hard to navigate on either side and i don’t think alan would ever stop feeling that bitterness & jealousy. however, one thing that sets him aside from every other person to interact with hal immediately after parallax & spectre is that alan didn’t trust him to begin with so there’s no inherent loss there but he’s not afraid to reach out either because he understands some small part of hal’s tragedy better than most
2) guy gardner
alan definitely hates guy in the way every person in the universe does (as they should) but he was also at guy’s bar opening night and twice after because he loves subjecting himself to medieval-tier torture but i think their relationship is actually perfectly balanced because it’s all mutual hatred. their most memorable interactions are probably during the emerald fallout issues of gg:w (#19-#21) and they’re frankly delightful
and guy’s got some good nicknames for alan
(”mr green lantern who was never really a green lantern”)
(”blondie”)
and there’s not much depth there beyond the world’s most reluctant allies! gg:w #31 actually has a wonderful alan story where he gets trapped in a living nightmare and the characterisation is just perfect but there’s no actual interaction with guy, which, yknow, makes it even better. i’d say alan tries to keep his distance if he can in order to save himself the annoyance, especially as i doubt guy’s one of the people who’d be particularly cool with certain things about alan that have recently become canon. take the fact that warriors has never experienced a green fiery inferno as a good sign!
3) john stewart
you’re definitely right on this front, there’s not a lot of john & alan out there! i do, however, have a personal favourite moment between the two from the green lantern 80 page giant (1998) #1:
while i don’t agree with the whole ‘old gls meet up and swap stories’ business and i personally think ron marz’s alan characterisation has always been genuinely atrocious because he never once understands that alan is not a member of the glc, i love how at ease alan is around john here. though there’s very few comics with the two of them, i feel like john’s the one green lantern alan actually respects and likes him well enough, even if not in a way where they’d willing spend time together or anything
4) kyle rayner
alan does NOT. i repeat does NOT. have a good relationship with kyle! the greatest thing about every alan & kyle interaction is alan’s tightly reined in need to murder him and his obligation to play nice for jennie’s sake. as i hope we all know, kyle’s an absolute creep and one of my favourite moments comes from one of those periods when he & jennie were broken up
and alan proceeds to break into kyle’s apartment at 5:30 am
and ignores all attempts at conversation just to start gathering jennie’s things. it’s a dream (gl 1990 #120). i think, especially because of the jennie thing, alan hates kyle more than he hates. most things

danny phantom, season 3, episodes 7-13 thoughts! cannot believe im finishing this series so fast. ...cannot believe it ended like that...uh. one of the weirdest finales to a show I think I've seen, it really stood out against the rest of the series, and not in a good way, in my opinion. I paused to yell in caps lock...several times, I think, out of anger... BUT. ANYWAY, HERE WE GO.

(they open their eyes a few times, so they aren't, but they look like it...)
-I like how this show has been pretty consistent (with a few exceptions) about a Ghost Being Huge (or getting larger) = Very Powerful
-2 months of summer camping??? wtf, do camping things usually take that long?? I've never been to a camping...thing like that. but isnt that basically their entire summer??

I didnt even WANT vlad to be the final villain because his character is SO back and forth (esp this season.) but he has done some FUCKED UP SHIT AND I WANTED THE WRITERS TO DOUBLE DOWN, PERSONALLY, IF THEY HAD TO MAKE HIM THE FINAL BOSS. the cabin ep where he basically held danny and maddie hostage? FUCKED. THE DANI THING? FUCKED. FUCKING COMMIT AND MAKE HIM ACTUALLY SCARY OR HAVE HIM FUCK OFF AND AGREE TO A TRUCE!! WHAT IS THIS DYING IN SPACE NONSENSE. (and, he will (fully) die out there, right? still half human, still needs food and water. I imagine he'll like, slowly half-die but this time his human side is dying. will he come back 100% ghost? we dONT KNOW. WE DONT GET TO SEE, ITS PLAYED LIKE SOME FUNNY THING AT THE END, THEN THATS IT!!! WHAT!!!)
-I don't know how to articulate how FRUSTRATING THAT IS. having him basically out himself and ''hold the world hostage'' does not track at all in my brain. like. he's always been scary because he is HUMAN, TOO. like, if he was 100% ghost, he'd be LESS scary, but vlad MASTERS has more power and influence than vlad PLASMIUS because of his position as mayor, his money, too, and his (supposed, s3 made me doubt it) intelligence/manipulation skills, and his being in good graces with jack made it HARD FOR DANNY. him outing himself for,, money and to 'control the world' i guess?? MONEY WAS NEVER HIS LIKE, MAIN GOAL. yeah obv he likes money and is materialistic and values his Rich Life, but hes got billions, the end goal? 1. getting maddie (and or danny as his son, but to me he always treated that as secondary) 2. ruining jack. this feels like they wanted to say 'oh he just wants POWER' which is. HMM?? OKAY?? obv he /does/ want power (usually over certain ppl, tho), but seeing him try to get it like this FELT WEIRD SOMEHOW. weird like the ep where he tried and failed to take over various historical civilizations, because like,, how is that realistically going to do anything for him?? just, being in that time forever and never seeing maddie aka Goal #1 again?? HELLO??? this was like that, but worse
-this was such a weird ending to an entire show. why did season 3 only have 13 episodes?? why did it feel so weirdly paced?? WHY WAS THE ENDING LIKE THAT. I think. I am going to pretend I did not see that. fucked up, dudes. I'm like...hm. I shouldn't have watched that because now I'm mad. valerie sweetie im SO sorry you shouldve been more present. it felt like..if they knew this season was going to be short, and the last season, they should've spent more time wrapping up EVERYONE'S plot lines for the entire season. imagine how cool it wouldve been if every single ep of season 3 was working towards something, a big, nice wrap up at the end, with nothing feeling TOO rushed because they'd been heading towards the End for the whole season....
I will probably end up writing a follow up full series thoughts post. In a couple of days so I can sit with my thoughts. BUT. overall, I really liked the show! (ignoring the finale and some of the moments that aged pretty poorly...) it was charming and a fun concept and very fun to watch in general :) and I am pretending the finale didnt happen <3 and I’m gonna dive RIGHT into the dp tags and mix fanart and posts in my queue, very excited to run and look at that 🏃🏻 (and, of course, make more fanart myself hehe >:3)

I’m so happy you agree with me on this! It’s such breath of fresh air to hear someone else has a similar opinion. I may be biased cause he’s my favourite character, but being in the fandom for some time now, knowing the past history and all turns out Murdoc is quite simple person to read and understand but only if you want to. Same goes for his father role. Somewhere in my mind I think he was the one she could confide in or tell something embarrassing because he wouldn’t be weird about it 🐥
Murdoc is my favorite character too so I definitely share that bias but I’d also be lying if I said that a lot of my opinions regarding Murdoc’s character weren’t fueled by a bit of spite regarding how Murdoc tends to be portrayed by both fan creators, and even in canon itself in a lot of cases. Like I said before, Murdoc is a deeply flawed character with a LOT of baggage that clearly shaped a major portion of his personality, and when you have as much baggage weighing down on you from years of physical and emotional abuse at the hands of a parental figure as Murdoc does, you tend to not come out the figure of sunshine and rainbows that people with happy and healthy childhoods do (this is obviously an exaggeration but I think u get my point).
That being said however, just because you went through a very rough time during your childhood doesn’t mean you are inherently going to treat those around you the same way (it’s this reason why I LOATHE his and 2D’s unhealthy relationship in canon and why I tend to ignore it for my own personal version of it), and that’s why I think Murdoc is far more likely to have at least tried to be a kind and loving father figure in Noodle’s life. Was he successful 100% of the time? Probably not. Did he make mistakes along the way? Knowing him, most definitely. But I always find it a little confusing when people say that they think Murdoc was a trainwreck when it came to looking after Noodle, or that he kept his distance and wanted nothing to do with her, when I personally feel like Murdoc would have done everything he could to make sure Noodle felt welcomed and included in things. She was never left out of interviews or performances and her skills as a musician were never belittled just because she was a kid, and while she does complain about Murdoc sometimes, like in an interview talking about the Feel Good Inc. music video, she just sounds like a disgruntled teenager lamenting when her dad embarrasses her in front of her friends. But even then I think ur absolutely right in thinking that Murdoc was someone who Noodle felt like she could talk to about about more “embarrassing” topics because a) it’s Murdoc, there’s not a single embarrassing thing in the world that he hasn’t already done at least once, and b) he’d be the one who would sit her down and straight up tell her exactly what she needed to hear which, while she might not enjoy it at the time, would ultimately help her out a lot more in the long run.
At the end of the day however Murdoc was someone who Noodle trusted and loved a great deal, which is shown in the fact that she willingly got onto the island for the El Manana music video despite knowing that Jimmy Manson was also on the island with the intent to literally kill her so that he could take her place in the band. Noodle trusted Murdoc so much that she knew he wouldn’t have let her on that island if he didn’t think she’d be able to get off it safely, and she was absolutely 100% correct in that belief. This is also what makes the ending of El Manana so heartbreaking because while Murdoc did have a solid plan to deal with Jimmy Manson, what he didn’t anticipate having to deal with was the arrival of the Black Cloud and the subsequent attack on the floating island. After finding out that Noodle “died” and went to hell not only does he immediately drag his rotting ass down there to look for her and bring her home but when his search comes up unsuccessful he comes back and grieves so viscerally for the daughter he thought he had a hand in killing that he literally builds a cybernetic replica of her because he can’t imagine his life without her.
Now of course some of the claims I’m making is me taking creative liberties in how I personally interpret the lore behind gorillaz but no matter how much liberty I take with the lore, there is far more legitimate evidence pointing to the idea that Murdoc loves Noodle like a daughter and tried his absolute best to fill the fatherly role that she needed, and while he was probably the furthest thing from perfect as u can get, he still managed to influence her positively and help her grow into the woman we know and love her as today!
Again sorry for the long post 😬 it’s just that I don’t get asks very often so when I do get them I kinda go a little ham on them and sometimes I end up going off topic a little bit too. But by all means let me know what u think of what I said. I tried to add some sources to back up what I was saying but at the end of the day a lot of my interpretations of the gorillaz lore are influenced by my own personal headcanons and how I would like for things to play out but I do think at least some of what I said has some canon evidence to back me up, it’s just a matter of how other people interpret that same information.

(my answer is super long omg i’m sorry. it’s basically me just going into a whole character study and explaining my view on where the characters are at in wayward son and such and i’m sorry if it’s too much aksdjhksaj. please don’t take this as me going “i don’t have the same view as u and here’s why i think ur wrong” but pls take this as “i’m sorry u had a negative experience, here’s me explaining my view in hope that maybe you’ll be able to view wayward son in a bit more positive light”. pls know i think ur totally allowed to be disappointed and upset!! i just hope to ease your pain a bit, sorry if i failed miserably)
when i started reading the book my heart Broke when i realised where the characters were at. however, as i kept reading the book i adjusted to it and personally i now really love the book for a lot of the things it did/explored.
i don’t think it was out of character for them to be in this place. i mean.. both simon and baz have an extremely complicated past (both together and separate from the other, their pasts are… not great).
simon has so much to work through; actual 18 years of trauma. and since he’s never in his life learned to communicate anything (he’s never even learned how to communicate with himself: he hides from any thought that he considers too complicated to unpack), he’s kind of having a rough go at working through all this. carry on ended on a positive point in simon’s ‘recovery’. but recovery is never just nice even steps upward. recovery also comes with extreme lows. wayward son starts in an extreme low.
simon has lost his idea of self so completely that he doesn’t know how to be a friend or a boyfriend anymore. he doesn’t know how to face himself and he doesn’t want to be confronted by who he has become. this is why being with baz is so hard for him, because being with someone so intimately asks for a lot of vulnerability from someone.. and to be vulnerable with someone you have to completely show yourself. simon isn’t in a place where he can handle showing himself like that. not to baz, not to himself. you also see, in wayward son, that the moments he is intimate with baz, it’s in/after moments where simon did feel more sure about himself/ moments where he truly felt comfortable: so at the faire for example, but also after having been able to fly over the desert all day. these were moments where simon was just comfortably being himself and thus also comfortable with being intimate with baz.
i think that it makes so much sense for simon to have such a complicated relationship with his sense of identity. in carry on this is already touched upon when baz asks if simon knew he was gay. in response to this, simon explains that he doesn’t know if he’s gay, because he never allowed himself to think about it. during simon’s time as the chosen one, he didn’t let himself be anything but the perfect picture of the chosen one. anything that didn’t fit that picture, he didn’t allow himself to think about. he never truly got to know himself. his identity revolved around what the mage needed from him. and now the mage is gone and no one is there to tell simon what simon needs to be, and he’s never learned how to Just Be, which leaves him in this completely lost state.
to me it makes sense that simon cannot communicate this to baz (or penny). he’s never once in his life been taught what proper and healthy communication is. and penny and baz both suck at communication too. (penny cannot hear anything she doesn’t want to hear–which is explored in wayward son. and baz i’ll touch upon later)simon’s never actually properly been raised by anyone. he’s lived in different foster cares, and from what we know of those he’s never felt like he was safe there (he drops some hints about it in carry on. i’m pretty sure he says he always sleeps fully clothed in those cares and that he’s been in fist fights with any kid there who looked at him wrong). in wayward son we find out that trauma has blocked out most of his memories from living in foster care. so we can assume he never truly got to develop as a kid in a healthy way of communication in any way shape or form, there. it makes sense for simon to not feel secure of himself, which explains a lot of his behaviour in wayward son and which made it feel very in character to me.
then there’s dear baz. he actually seems to be doing better in wayward son than he was in carry on. as simon says in wayward son, baz really has come into himself. baz seems to be more sure of himself than he ever was, which makes sense, now he doesn’t have to live up to this image his family created for him as much anymore. but if there’s one thing baz still struggles with it’s being vocal about what’s going on inside his head.
baz has been taught to hide big parts of himself away for pretty much all of his life. starting with being a vampire, then being gay, then being in love with the last person he probably should be in love with, might we also add that he’s always actually been a soft hearted boy, but had to take the role of an antihero? we might. through his family he’s become very adapt at shushing anything remotely troubling up. which is something he still carries with him. he’s also learned not to ask questions. if there’s he has a question about anything that also might make someone uncomfortable, he’s learned to just not ask. (which explains why he avoids making simon talk about his feelings. he doesn’t understand what’s going on with simon, but he’s been taught not to ask questions if he can sense they may cause people to feel uncomfortable, so he remains quiet.)
besides the fact that they both SUCK at communication, their past together has only ever revolved around fighting each other. it’s the only way they knew how to be around each other. and long with all that has changed since the mage died, this changed too.
add all of these factors together and i think it is very in character for them to be at the place they are where we start with wayward son.
this doesn’t mean it doesn’t hurt to watch them like that through.
but i think that, knowing where these characters come from, they really had/have a lot to work through, with everything that happened in carry on. and i personally am glad that rainbow has decided to take the time to really give these characters the time they need to work through this, instead of having them magically be okay and ignore all the trauma they had to face in the past.
it’s horrible to see them in a relationship that’s not truly heathy. but i think think they will grow into a healthier relationship. i really have hope that they’re working towards being more sure of themselves, which will help them become more sure (and thus healthy) in their relationship. i think that once simon gains more confidence in who he is, and once he stops running from every thought that makes him uncomfortable, he’ll learn how to speak his mind a lot better. (and i think simon really is growing to such a point. at the end of the book he came to the realisation that pretending he’s still part of the world of mages isn’t doing him good and that he is going to try and find work and become more independent, which is a choice that still made him sad, but it also felt right to him. having those thoughts were very confronting for him, but he didn’t push them away. the decision made him cry, but he also said it made him feel clean, which shows he’s confronting himself–finally–to move forward, no matter how painful)
rainbow rowell is not letting go of these characters yet. she’s not just gonna leave them like this, i fully believe this. i have hope that she’ll allow these characters to grow and recover to a point where they can have a fully healthy relationship (because i also really don’t believe simon and baz are incapable of a healthy relationship btw!! there were many moments in wayward son that showed them just being comfortable around each other, where it was purely simon’s insecurities that got in the way, and not the way they fit as people: like when baz was teaching simon how to drive. they really aren’t a bad match. they’re just in a bad place and don’t have the proper tools to help each other. but they’ll learn and grow and they’ll get there!!)
i think that what this book did was show a deep low in their recovery process. this deep low is a necessary part of recovery. i think the way rainbow wrote about traumatised young adults was super respectful and accurate. i think she did it with a lot of respect for who these characters are and where they come from, and that she’s not finished with them yet. this is only the first step. but a very important one.
the only thing that truly stresses me out about this book is the open ending. because oh man if we have to wait 4 more years to know how this continues i might just fully collapse.
but yes, i think that, even though this book was harsh, it was a necessary step in their recovery. and i think that, besides the sadness of them being in such a low point of their relationship, this book still had many amazing moments that reminded me of why i love these characters so so much.
i really hope you’ll start to feel more at peace with this book some day, and that you’ll find things in it that you can love it for. (not because i think that everyone should love this book, but because i genuinely wish for you that you could love this book)
i’m sorry for this super long answer, but i didn’t just want to answer “i’m sorry u didn’t enjoy the book, i had a different experience though”, because that felt unfair.

hey *whispers* hey. hey. i saw your post in the wow tag. i would read THE SHIT out of your interpretation of wow lore. i have homework right now but i think i might just read through your blog a bit. the characters have always been such a high point for me (listen. i know knaak did a lot of shit. but you can pry Krasus from my cold dead hands he was EVERYTHING to middle school me) and i feel so conflicted over what theyve done to the characters - sylvanas, anduin, everyone. would love ur take
You might be a little disappointed, most of my blog isn’t about WoW (it postdates my WotLK raiding/RP guild phase, and I’ve only just recently got back into it with Classic). Lots of opinions on WoW characters below the cut.
I actually don’t hate Krasus as a character. He’s fine, he’s not a Designated Idiot Ball Carrier like some of the others are. In re: the dragons generally, I don’t like the simplistic thing WoW lore does a lot where one faction leader going bonkers turns the whole faction into baddies for no apparent reason, because all political entities are monoliths except when they’re not. I’m also not a huge fan of how crowded the, erm, metahuman bureaucracy on Azeroth has become in the lore–like, the Keepers and the Dragon Aspects serve similar roles, and the lore could have done fine with one or the other, and the dragons were here first (and Ysera and Alexstrasza are BAMFs), and so should get to stay.
Sylvanas is bae, obviously, and Sylvanas as Warchief was a terrific move plotwise. I think it’s a pity they had to kill Vol’jin to do it (because I am also very here for Warchief Vol’jin), but she is obviously the more interesting choice. Speaking of Warchiefs:
Thrall doesn’t have the Green Jesus Marty Stu quite as bad as some people think, but he does kinda have it, and I don’t see them grappling quite with the fact that he done fucked up. Like, not only did he install a Warchief who should have had all smart members of the Horde tugging at their collars nervously when he started his rule, Garrosh turned into a Sha-summoning Old God-corrupted, casual-atrocity-perpetrating maniac, not to mention all the bullshit on Old Draenor I do my best to forget about lest my blood pressure spike. We don’t really get a satisfying mea culpa from Thrall for that, and then his response is to fuck off to fiddle around with the Earthen Ring for a bit, before retiring to a farm in Nagrand. Keep in mind, one of the whole reasons the Horde came together in its current shape in the first place is because of the charismatic, hopeful figure of Thrall. It ran the very real risk of splintering under Garrosh for good (ESPECIALLY after the murder of Cairne, RIP Cairne Bloodhoof, you were too good for this world), and even the most unifying successor (which I think Vol’jin was) didn’t have Thrall’s inclusive, unifying vision. Sylvanas doesn’t, either, and even more, is sort of low-key hated by everybody else, so while I don’t think she’s a maniac like Garrosh who would recklessly divide the Horde, she’s also not, I am forced to admit, necessarily the ideal Warchief from a political standpoint.
Even if he didn’t return to the post of Warchief, Thrall had a moral obligation after the Garrosh debacle to try to help hold the Horde together and heal the divisions his negligence caused. At least to throw his support behind Garrosh’s successors, and not to pretend that Deathwing’s death meant everything was OK forever, job done. And if he wasn’t going to do that (and he has excellent motivations for not wanting to do that!), I think the consequences of that have to be explored. I think some people would blame him, and be justified in doing so. I think somebody like Varok Saurfang, who has had decades of experience with the damage bad leaders could do, would rightly be a little pissed, even as he sought Thrall out for help, that Thrall had let the Horde he built languish under subpar leadership. Thrall has been selfish–and that’s great, because he desperately needed some character flaws more significant than “cares too much” and “believes in people a lot.”
Anduin: better than Varian, still a little bland? Varian was a Professional Idiot Ball Handler, who seemed to do stuff not out of a coherent conception of his character, but just because the plot required a Generic Human King to do it. Plus there was all that stuff with the cloning and the kidnapping that never really made any sense. I like Anduin’s optimism; I like that he feels like a thoughtful, reasonable guy, who’s doing his best in often-impossible circumstances. I feel like they could show him being a little more frustrated sometimes, though, and a little pissed at people like Jaina who obstinately refuse to do the strategically correct thing even if it means setting aside their resentments for a bit. Disclaimer: I play almost exclusively Horde toons, they may address this better in the Alliance quests in WoW.
But oh man, besides the Draenei, I hate most what they did to Jaina. Jaina was that rare jewel, an optimist in a world whose setting demands perpetual chaos. Yes, yes, Theramore and the mana bomb, I’m not suggesting she should be made of stone, but it breaks her character to have her suddenly go from someone trying to forge a lasting peace between the Horde and Alliance in WC3–to the point where she would see her own father dead–to someone who now blames the whole Horde as one no exceptions for what happened at Theramore. Should she struggle with grief and pain and anger? Absolutely. But she should deal with them in more complex ways than “now I am become the mirror image of Daelin.” Nevermind that even if she did that she should at least regret not listening to him back in WC3. (Do they address that in BFA with the introduction of Kul Tiras? Idk, I haven’t played BFA at all yet.) It seems like Jaina’s role now is to be the Person Who Hates The Horde, and honestly, that’s a tired trope. It’s just not interesting, it has no nuance, it has no interesting outcomes. You could maybe get away with it with the generation of leaders from the Second War like Daelin and Genn who knew the Orcs only as the fel-corrupted servants of the Burning Legion, but it’s obvious to anyone with two brain cells to rub together than the current Horde is a very different animal politically and strategically, so even if you hate the Orcs with a burning passion, that is not going to transfer to the Tauren, nevermind onetime allies like the Blood Elves.
Gul’dan: oh my god the time travel plot was so stupid. Did the whole universe get duplicated in the alternate timeline? Since travel between the universes is cheap and easy that means there’s a whole nother Burning Legion with a whole nother Sargeras out there that’s still a huge fricking threat! Not to mention a whole nother Azeroth! Did just Draenor get duplicated? That doesn’t seem to match up with the fact a lot of the Burning Legion characters in WoD seem to be parallel universe versions of Burning Legion villains we already know, but it’s not directly confirmed or disconfirmed. Is it some sort of weird Bronze Dragonflight timey-wimey thing that doesn’t have its own independent reality? Ok, fine, but obviously this alternate Draenor has enough of an independent existence for us to visit it again and see what it’s like decades later, not to mention bring some of the people there back. Gul’dan was a fine, if one-dimensional villain but bringing him back from the dead was dumb, dumb, dumb, in a setting where death often feels meaningless and seems to be reversible at random. And the general incoherence of magic in the setting combined with the perennial incoherence of time travel plots (Gollum voice: *we hates them!*) really just reduced WoD to a quivering mess of plot holes, like febrile fan speculation made manifest.
Tirion Fordring: good example of a purely heroic character done well, which WoW has few of. I think because he actually has challenges to overcome, and he doesn’t feel like an idiot.
Bolvar Fordragon: Literally did not know or care who this guy was until the Wrathgate cinematic, but what they did after that with his character was terrific, 10/10.
Malfurion, Tyrande, Illidan: These characters all bore me to tears. My WotLK main was a druid, and I’m a big fan of the druid lore, so I wanna like Malfurion, I really do, but he’s just so dull. Partly because it doesn’t feel like he has any real limitations on his power, just whatever the plot demands he be able to do or not do at any given moment, partly because he just feels like a stiff-necked scold. Tyrande is even more one-dimensional. Illidan is pure 3edgy5me, and the demon hunters in general feel like they get to be too cool to actually traffic in any of the pathos of what should be their emotional equivalents like the Death Knights and the Forsaken. It’s like, “oh man, my life is so tormented, I have these bitchin’ horns and tattoos, and I’m, like, totally immortal, here, hold my rad sword thingies for a second.” At least with the Death Knights you get the feeling that being a Death Knight is a genuinely miserable experience, so there’s some genuine conflict at the heart of the class: sure, you play as a hero, but not the kind of hero you’d necessarily want to be. Demon hunters are just pissed they don’t get to sit at the cool kids’ lunch table, and Illidan genuinely acts like a giant asshole and then gets self-righteous and whiny when his friends and family are like “Dude! Stop being such an asshole!” There’s room for a prickly character, who’s a dick, but who’s our dick, and maybe that’s what they were going for, but Illidan is just the worst.
Azshara, Lady Vashj: The Naga were a giant fucking mistake. A symptom of the inability to let backstory stay backstory, to have to resurrect and retread the same events over and over again that plagues serials when lesser writers without original ideas get let loose on them. Settings like WoW (like Star Wars, like Star Trek, like Dune) are whole universes. You should be expanding the borders, making them feel bigger, more fine-grained, more alive, not beating the same major characters to death over and over again. The ancient Kaldorei are way more interesting as a lost past and a lesson in hubris than fish-snake-people who live under the sea.
Also, water levels are dumb and I hate them. This applies to coral-and-shellfish themed zones regardless of whether swimming is involved.
Cho’gall: I loved the “insane nihilist death cult” reincarnation of the Twilight’s Hammer Clan in World of Warcraft, and Cho’gall as the many-eyed crazed ogre mage with two heads was great. Would much rather have more Cho’gall than Guldan 2.0.
While I’m on Cataclysm: one thing you don’t often feel in worlds like WoW is the possibility of real defeat, because for extradiegetic reasons, it’s impossible to truly lose in any long-lasting way (or, in quests like Battle for the Undercity in WotLK, they just… don’t let you, which feels dumb as heck). I’ve always been fascinated by the idea of a post-apocalyptic fantasy world, a world where the bad guys won, and all the worst things the good guys feared came to pass. I think this is one reason I loved the original interpretation of the Draenei so much, because we saw in Draenor what that really looked like. It was bleak, and it was poignant, and even though it was set within a silly melodrama, it actually moved me. Cataclysm did something similar with the postapocalyptic time-travel instance (time travel being used well for once in WoW!), where you saw that Deathwing’s victory wasn’t just an abstract possibility, but a thing that could actually happen. It made the possibility of defeat feel more real, and it gave you a taste of that same bleak, poignant feeling: this, it said (just for a moment!) is what failure looks like, an Azeroth without life, without hope, in which everything you ever struggled for was utterly in vain. And that motivated you to work even harder to prevent it.
Alleria, Turalyon: “You last saw us in WC2, and since then we’ve been fighting a thousand years (subjective) of endless war against the Burning Legion and been irrevocably changed by the experience” is actually pretty great! But if I were going to rewrite WoW lore, I would make that a thousand objective years and set the final victory over the Burning Legion in the future, at a time when the Alliance and Horde have made a durable peace, and Azeroth has moved on from decades of endless war. I think there’s a real problem with trying to make the player one of the heroes that brings down Sargeras for good because it’s *such* an epic battle, but it’s a massively multiplayer game. Making every player the grand master of their class order was bad enough, but when you are obviously playing out entirely different diegesis from everyone around you, even if you didn’t have problems like sharding and a glut of phasing and cross-server activities and instant teleportation to dungeons, it really feels like a single-player RPG with a chat function. I mean, conflicting diegeses is always going to be a problem with questing-based MMOs, but suspension of disbelief worked when you were plainly one person embedded in a larger effort, like in vanilla, BC, and WotLK. But “you are one of thousands of people who is the Best Warrior Ever and sole Leader of the Warriors, and who has the Only Artifact Weapon that somehow also has thousands of copies”… yeah, that just doesn’t work for me. I feel like I’m being pandered to, and not in a fun way, like with the Pandaren.
Sargeras: I like that they retconned Sargeras to have a better motivation than “demons made me nihilistic.” The idea of a void-corrupted titan being something so terrible a member of the Pantheon would shatter worlds to prevent it is interesting. But the Void gods still feel… kinda non-threatening? We don’t see them actively working to threaten anything we really care about, the Void is mostly a pretty passive abstract force like the Light, and in general I feel like the setting isn’t really dualistic, but er… trialistic? Is that a word? In that there’s a three-way opposition between the Void, the Light, and the Nether/Arcane, from the perspective of which each is the opponent of both of the others, but that’s never laid out explicitly anywhere.

for au mash up 19. Summer Camp AU and 24. Soulmate AU
okay so in this universe, as per any soulmate universe, soulmates are A Big Thing. the way that soulmates work–let’s have some fun here– when you touch your soulmate for the first time, they leave a color in the spot they touched you. it has to be skin-to-skin. this will become important later.
so in this world, since soulmates are such a big thing–almost everyone finds their soulmate, the only typical cases that don’t are people that die young or people who are aro, though there are platonic soulmates and poly and such, bc we’re inclusive here boyos– but because they’re so big and common and everything, there are a lot of industries around them
psychics and palm readers have specialized skills to tell you what your soulmate is like, bio-medical companies sell drugs that tell you how long it will be until you find your soulmate (sketchy, but people are desperate) and the weirdest one, imo, is the send-away summer camps for children to find their soulmates young.
yeah. weird.
there’s science to back it up, saying kids who kind their soulmates at younger ages live longer, healthier lives, and the matches between those soulmates is much stronger and, now, with the advent of social media, kid soulmate findings always go viral
so now onto our story; nursey’s parents all have very big work summers coming up (his parents are one of the few poly soulmates in the world, his dad is aro and platonically bonded to nursey’s mom and mama, who are v gay and v in love, and they all live together happily in a beautiful brownstone) so they ask him what he wants to do for the summer and he shows them the brochure for the Summer Soulmate Camp in the rural part of maine.
why did nursey choose this one? he’s a romantic and thinks the greenery is the perfect place to fall in love, it won’t be too hot for the summer, he can go swimming, and they have a hockey rink. it’s perfect.
(also, sidenote, i imagine he’s about ten or eleven here, dex is the same)
so though nursey’s parents are a little hesitant, they also want their son to be happy, so they buy him all the gear he’ll need, drive him up to maine, and kiss him goodbye on the first day of camp.
nursey takes to the camp immediately–the food isn’t great, very bland, but the people are so nice and there’s so much to do and he can’t wait to find friends, even if he doesn’t end up finding his soulmate. his roommate is a great guy–named chris, but goes by chowder– and he’s so enthusiastic and he tells nursey he plays goalie in hockey so when the day comes to join the hockey group on campus, they both head down to the rink, bouncing and excited.
this is, of course, where dex comes in.
dex, a sullen, tiny, perpetually frowning little dude gets matched up with nursey for d-man. despite nursey’s initial hesitation at such a little guy being a d-man, dex soon shows his worth by checking the opposing forward hard.
“will, buddy, we’re not checking in this league, okay?” the coach, a well-meaning woman with smile crinkles next to her eyes.
dex stares up at her. “if i’m not checking anyone why am i even here.”
there may or may not have been an expletive in there somewhere. we’re not going to mention it if you won’t.
and you might be wondering, “hey why is dex being such a dick” or maybe you’re just like “mm in character” (ur wrong but whatever) but here’s the story. these summer camps are usually reserved for people who have the money–there’s only so many spaces and aside from the soulmate thing, they still have a bunch of amenities and it’s for the whole summer. by all rights, dex shouldn’t be here.
but then last winter happened, and he fell down during hockey practice, and the doctor explained to the poindexters–little mama p standing tall, resolute, her husband holding onto her waist in support, dex’s older brother j, finally not wearing an asshole’s smirk– that dex was sick. badly.
and see, dex is fine. like, the chemo sucked and his hair falling out sucked and everyone looking at him like he’s a weak little useless fucking– it sucks. but that was months ago, and it’s sort of in remission now, and though the doctor says it’s probably going to come back and they’ll have to do another round of chemo– dex is fine okay. the buzzed hair doesn’t look too bad and he’s stronger now, he can play hockey again.
but the cancer scared his parents, and his extended family, and though they all believe in the natural meeting of your soulmate, they all silently agreed that dex didn’t have the time to wait. the only thing sadder than dying young was dying without a soulmate.
so they scrounged up the cash through all the branches of their family tree and sent dex to Summer Soulmate Camp, and now here he is, angry and isolated and ready to check any rich prep kid that looks at him funny on the ice.
as you can imagine, nursey and dex don’t get along well at the start.
dex isn’t much into soulmates and doesn’t keep his opinion to himself, and nursey is so wholeheartedly romantic that he can’t imagine not thinking about your soulmate every day. “they’re the one person who can make you the best you can be,” nursey says, one day after practice, and dex scoffs.
“if you’re not good enough on your own, how the hell is your soulmate being chained to you gonna make it any better?”
they also argue about money things, but mostly brand names that dex doesn’t know, or international trips nursey doesn’t realize is a luxury. to be fair, none of the other kids know this either–nursey at least tries to listen
(he’s too young, really, to understand how his blackness has affected him in a similar, possibly more visible way. later on, he’ll read books about slaves “given permission” to marry their soulmates from masters, the interracial couples that ended in mobs driving the black man out of town–or worse– and the history of black soulmates being restricted and demeaned and made to feel less than. now, now he only notices being the only mixed boy in the room some of the time. now, at least, is a calm before the bliss is broken.)
but the thing that comes along with all of nursey and dex’s arguments is that they come to know each other better than anyone else at the camp. even chowder, who tags along with them all the time when he isn’t following after the girls’ volleyball team (he hasn’t touched farmer yet, so he can’t know, but he really likes her smile and she’s the best at doing handstands), even he doesn’t know how nursey feels about books the way dex does, after the late-night talk around the bonfire when nursey got rambly and giddy and dex just.. listened
and it takes a while before dex talks about the cancer. back home, everyone knows, but here he could pretend. nursey doesn’t tell everyone–dex almost expected that he would, but that was more on him than nursey– but he listens and nods and doesn’t pity dex, respects him maybe, cares, but no pity.
and that night, sitting on the end of the dock in a rare unsupervised moment, nursey nearly reaches out to hold dex’s hand in comfort, and dex nearly hugs nursey when he says, “fuck cancer” in the most emphatic, simple, comprehending way dex has ever heard, but neither does. they’ve learned, in this culture, the importance of touch, and both boys are too scared to find out, to break that last barrier. this could be enough. this should be enough.
the rest of the summer is spent in a haze of friendships and salt water and trees and scraped knees and laughter, and all of them swear that they’re gonna text, call, facetime, whatever. they’re going to keep this up. they’re going to be friends forever
they’re not allowed phones at the camp, so they write down each other’s numbers– just dex’s, actually, because he’s the only one who can remember his home phone number– and nursey and chowder swear to call when they get home and give dex their number (chowder also has farmer’s number, now, and her mark–smudgy and bluish purple on his shoulder from where she tackled him trying to spike the ball in a game on the beach last week. his, teal, is on her palm almost in the shape of a heart)
on the day of pick up, dex’s family shows up first–closer– and he and nursey are forced to say goodbye. “i guess this is it,” dex says, hefting his duffle bag strap onto his shoulder.
“no it’s not,” nursey insists. “i’ll call you. i will.”
“yeah right,” dex says, but he’s smiling anyway, and something about the moment–two boys, from such different worlds, somehow so similar in all the important ways, stand in front of each other, having never touched but knowing every little thing– something about the moment makes it so, suddenly, being soulmates doesn’t matter.
they’re friends. no matter what their colors say, that can be the most profound relationship they ever have.
“see you, nursey,” dex says, impulsive, and reaches his arms up to hug nursey close. nursey, startled, wraps his arms around dex. the hug is so unexpected, so quick, that neither of them feels dex’s forearm brush against nursey’s neck, neither of them notice the spread of green–on dex’s arm– or orange– nursey’s neck
later, after dex’s dad pulls in the driveway of their house, dex shoves open the door he’d slumped against when he got in the car and absentmindedly goes to wipe off the mossy-green stuff on his arm only to see it and freak
nursey, since his is behind his head, isn’t the one to notice his mark. it’s only when he’s going up the stairs in front of his mama that she yells something about “papito why didn’t you tell us you found your soulmate?” and nursey drops all of his bags and races up the stairs to the bathroom to try to use a hand mirror and the bathroom vanity to see the sunset dex left on his neck
but here’s the drama, right, nursey goes for his bag to find dex’s number and call–and he can’t find the paper it was written on. he scours his stuff to no avail. his parents call the summer camp, but they legally can’t give out information, and nursey doesn’t know the name of dex’s town and– you get where i’m going. they can’t find each other. they lose touch.
and both boy wonders what could have been, dex wonders why nursey didn’t call (probably develops a complex, whatever) and nursey wonders why dex never tried to look him up, and nursey hopes that dex’s cancer didn’t come back and dex hopes that nursey is still the romantic he’s always been, but they don’t see each other for another seven years.
what happens then? well, these hockey nerds go to take a tour of this cool college called samwell and, well. the rest i’m sure you can figure out from there.

chowder’s stomach rumbles. he texts chowder frowny faces and she sends back a cry-laugh and a wink. he gets no sympathy for his plight.)

Kent set a box down in the foyer with a huff. He and Tater had finally both retired and decided to get a house in Providence together and really settle down. They had done the “fall in love & get married” thing several years back. Now all they needed was a home, a dog, and 2.5 kids and they would be set living the American suburbia dream. Well, as much as two gayhockey players could.
The sun was just getting high in the sky, as beams beat down through the skylight. Kent could handle heat after all the years of playing Las Vegas, but he never did enjoy the humidity of east coast summers, even when he was a kid.
As he wiped the sweat off his brow, he heard his husband as he stepped through the threshold carrying one end of a very large sectional.
“Move Kenny, we are needing to get your oversized couch in!” Tater hollered as he walked backwards through the entryway.
“Seriously, this thing is heavy!” Swoops grunted, carrying the other end of the L shaped sectional
“Hey, aren’t you two professional athletes?” Kent chided, shoving the boxes they had already carried into the side so as to make way.
“Fuck off Parser, lifting a couch is not the same as passing a puck”
“Intelligent observation there Troy,” Snowy stood behind both men a decently sized box labeled ‘Bedroom’.
“By the way Tater, I swear to god if what I’m carrying is a box of sex shit you’re gonna pay so many fines.”
“Cannot fine if retired!” Tater called out in a sing-song voice from the family room where he and Swoops were setting down the couch.
“Besides,” he grinned, returning to the foyer “we already move sex stuff in first.”
Snowy rolled his eyes as he began to climb the staircase to the second floor. “T.M.I. man. T.M.I”
Kent smiled to himself observing the scene around him. He never did imagine his life going this way. He never thought he would be allowed to have this: a gorgeous loving husband, a group of supportive friends whom he was out to, and as of this past season, the ability to retire on his own terms.
He had always imagined he would play as long as the league would let him, and then once he was outed by an ex, a hookup, Deadspin or whatever, he would take his hockey money and disappear from the public eye. He didn’t want to be branded as “the gay hockey player” or the other gay hockey player”.
But, a lot had changed the year Jack came out on the ice. The media backlash that hit him was harsher than he expected at first: reporters cornering him on his morning run to ask him for his comment or opinion, social media blowing up with pictures of Kent and Jack from the Q he didn’t even know existed, and wilder and wilder speculations being thrown his way through way of news reports and “investigative reporters” (read: busybodies with no sense of personal space or human decency).
It was all made more difficult by the fact that Jack had not warned him in any way shape or form that he was going to come out on public television in front of thousands of screaming fans right after winning the Stanley Cup. Jack and Kent later spoke about the event at length, with the former apologizing for the lack of communication. But not much could be done at that point. Kent had already been thrown under the metaphorical gay bus.
Much to Kent’s surprise however, his organization was willing to support him after all that had happened. His GM, Grant, met him at the gym two days after the fact, saying to him “If there’s something you want to tell me, tell me in your own time, but I’ll make sure the organization is there for you when you do” He came out the next day, posting a picture of Kit sitting in Alexei’s lap (with his permission) with the caption saying “tfw ur cat ignores u for ur man.”
Kent was quickly brought out of his reminiscent reverie by the force of two children knocking him over. “Liv, Ricky, you’re here earlier than expected. Did your dads let you skip out on camp today to help your Uncle Tater and I move in?”
Olivia Marie Bittle-Zimmermann, and Richard James Bittle-Zimmermann were Jack and Eric’s 5 year old twins. Both had deep brown eyes like their Daddy and the striking dark hair of their Papa. Kent swore they got bigger and bigger every single time he and Alexei saw them.
“Uncle Kenny Uncle Kenny! Daddy’s gonna let me carry boxes,” Olivia squealed in delight, pulling on Kent to get up.
“I wanted to go to camp, but I also wanna see Uncle Tater,” Ricky was only slightly pouting but Kent could tell it was just for show.
“Why not me too you little bugger? Favoring Uncle Tater over me?” Kent gasped, in faux offense. Ricky smiled and ran off to find his favorite of the two.
Standing up to his full height, Kent picked up Olivia and popped her onto his side. “What took you two old men so long? We’ve already brought most of the boxes in.”
“I’m younger n’ you Kent Parson, so watch your tongue. We got held up.” Eric Bittle Zimmermann stood at the entryway referring to the two sizable pieces of tupperware containing what Kent hoped to be pie. Blueberry for Tater and chocolate mousse for himself. “I’m gonna go set these down before I grab some boxes.”
“Kitchen’s that way” Kent pointed down the hall to the left, setting Olivia down. “Why don’t you go help your Uncles carry stuff into the kitchen kiddo?”
Jack walked in a moment later, carrying one of the few boxes left in the truck. It was labeled ‘Kitchen’. “Bits wanted to make sure y’all had pie for when everything was unpacked.”
“Lookat you Zimms, using ‘y’all’ like a born and bred southerner”
“Haha yeah, after being with Bits so long it just slips out.”
“I’ll quit chirping you man, but here, I’ll show you where to take that.” Kent led the way to the kitchen, carrying his own box he had set down earlier.
Entering into the kitchen Kent saw Swoops and Snowy sitting criss-cross applesauce on the ground with Olivia and Ricky playing patty cake amongst the assorted boxes. His heart softened at the sight. He really did love those kids as if he were their biological uncle. He set down the box on the counter and walked up to his husband to give him a small kiss. “Hey babe.
We’re almost done” Alexei in turn picked Kent up and placed a fat kiss on Kent’s cheek. Both of the twins made a face “Ewww”
“Is good. Is getting too hot to lift” Alexei said, putting Kent down.
“I swear y’all are so weak, it ain’t even 85 and you’re complaining.” Eric was on the opposite end of the counter, taking plates and silverware out of boxes.
“Bits you say that as if you don’t put on a hat and gloves when it’s not even 10 degrees out” Jack chirped from the other end of the kitchen, taking a blender out of the box closest to him. Eric made a comment under his breath about Jack’s use of Celsius.
“Both of you quit unpacking. Lyosha and I can take care of that later. Let’s just pause for a moment and dig into whatever Bits brought. I’m starving”
Jack set down the blender and Eric placed the plates down on the counter. “I was gettin them to put the food on.”
“C’mon Bitty we can just use our hands” Snowy called from the floor. Ricky was sitting in his lap messing with Snowy’s phone and nodded his head fiercely in agreement.
“Yeah, no need to fuss Eric.” Swoops was right next to him with Olivia in his lap. She was wearing Swoops’ cap backwards and nodding reverently as if to agree.
Eric shook his head in disagreement. “I swear once a hockey player, always a hockey player. Y’all are heathens and we are using plates.”
“But Daddy!” The twins called simultaneously from the floor.
Kent smiled. “C’mon now you two, gotta listen to your Dad, otherwise, he won’t let you have any pie. Even if he is taking the fun out of eating”
“Kent V. Parson, I swear!”
Later that night after the pie had been eaten and a good percentage of the boxes had been unpacked, Kent sat in bed next to his husband, replaying the events of the day over in his head. The image of the twins running around the house, playing and having fun caused Kent to feel a tinge inside. He wondered what it would be like if they had their own kids. It was the first time he’d given serious thought on the matter. He never allowed himself to imagine having a
husband, a house and well, happiness. But now, he let himself imagine. He imagined tons of kids, smiling, calling him Dad. It made something in him warm, but it also frightened him. Kent had never had a relationship with his father. He didn’t even know the first thing of taking care of kids. Would he even be a good dad?
“котенок, you thinking so loud. Keep me up. What is wrong?” Alexei sat up and turned to face Kent in their bed, interrupting his negative train of thought.
“Lyosha have you ever thought about...having kids?” Kent sat up and faced his
husband. Alexei paused for a moment. “Yes, many times. Did not think could though. Because of-”
“Because of the gay thing” Kent cut him off. “But, like if you wanted, well, we’re both retired now. And we have this bigass house. We could adopt a few. Or maybe get a surrogate.”
Alexei hummed and pulled Kent into a hug. “I’m liking that idea. We talk more about it tomorrow. It’s been long day.” He kissed Kent and laid back down on the bed.
Kent laid back down on the bed and smiled, closing his eyes. Suddenly, he opened one and smirked, “Hey what’s that thing straight people in movies say when they talk about having kids? ‘Let’s start now?’”
Alexei looked at Kent “Well…”
