truly is a beautiful masterpiece of modern art that an online community largely fueled by fandom and media analysis has come full circle into creating a detailed and thorough pastiche, via gifsets and faux analysis essays and letterboxd reviews and more, of a "forgotten 1970s film classic" that does not actually exist. Goncharov (1973) (the memetic phenomenon) has quickly become one of the most biting statements about the current state of art and its consumption. A work of art that exists not in and of itself, but as a discussion of itself. an analysis of itself. An appreciation of itself. pure unadulterated simulacrum.
Okay, but have we considered the new Goncharov effect, which is that now posts about real movies sound fake?
...A film called Glass Onion, you say? (hmmm, like the parody site “The Onion”?) In which international heartthrob and Bond actor Daniel Craig plays a confirmed gay character? In the middle of a murder mystery? On a beautiful exotic Greek island? With the legendary and gorgeous non-binary bicon Janelle Monáe as a part of the cast as well? In a double role? All of my queer heart’s dreams coming true in one subtextually homoerotic action movie? Nice try, Tumblr. I’m not falling for that one twice.
I keep seeing plot analyses and character analyses of everyone in Goncharov. What about Ice-Pick Joe's cat Mrs. Claws and how she is very obviously a symbol of Ice-Pick Joe's humanity despite everything he lost in his childhood? Like she's the last of his family.
Yeah sure he killed people, but it was always for a reason. He made sure to explain everytime. Except for that one break-in scene but that was self-explanatory. Plus Mrs. Claws has definitely killed people too and you don't hear anyone say anything about that.
Finding Goncharov | A documentary looking at the birth of this recently unearthed Scorsese classic.
If you want to see the full doc happen, please let me know! It would be a pleasure to get this off the ground and really explore the history of the world's greatest Mafia movie.
Thanks to @caramiaaddio, @mortal-ghost, @beelzeebub, @perplexingly, @rabdoidal and @merualeden for permission to use their excellent Goncharov content!
Okay guys, I'm gonna level with you. I've only seen Goncharov once, in a film class in college, and I had to go to the bathroom in the middle of it, so I've never seen it in its entirety. I saw clips of what I missed on youtube, but its not the same...
