Ok, I know we don't like to talk about it because of the scene context, BUT that scene with Andrey and Goncharov in the art museum where Goncharov tells Andrey "In the Bible Judas kisses Jesus on the mouth as an act of betrayal yet most artist portray it as a kiss on the cheek, I wonder why that is" and Andrey replies with clear confusion "I don't recall reading this in the Bible" and Goncharov goes "No no, I'm pretty sure it happened" and then later during Andrey's betrayal scene, Goncharov tells him "Are you portraying this kiss or are you a coward?" as a way of saying "I understood you were gonna do this long ago, but I can no longer run from my destiny, I can no longer run from time" and then Andrey kisses him right before shooting him in the heart it's just so good and it's even better when you know that mobs and people in the mafia in general kiss others on the mouth as an oath to be loyal to them till the very end and it's so good this movie makes me wanna eat glass I swear to god help me I'm obsessed

I keep seeing plot analyses and character analyses of everyone in Goncharov. What about Ice-Pick Joe's cat Mrs. Claws and how she is very obviously a symbol of Ice-Pick Joe's humanity despite everything he lost in his childhood? Like she's the last of his family.
Yeah sure he killed people, but it was always for a reason. He made sure to explain everytime. Except for that one break-in scene but that was self-explanatory. Plus Mrs. Claws has definitely killed people too and you don't hear anyone say anything about that.

okay okay we all know about when Katya said “of course we’re in love. that’s why I tried to shoot you” and when Goncharov said “If we really were in love, you wouldn’t have missed” and then Andrey didn’t miss at the end, BUT have we considered the scene where Sofia aims the gun at Katya?? have we considered how she throws it to the ground in tears, unable to even pull the trigger?? these scenes perfectly define the two different types of love shown in the movie.
Goncharov and Andrey, as well as Goncharov and Katya (because they did love each other, even if they weren’t in love), have the type of love that feeds off of pain. they are so terribly traumatized that they can’t even begin to imagine love that doesn’t involve hurting the other person, that isn’t a kind of mutually assured destruction.
Sofia tries to follow their path, because she knows it is what is expected of her, but she can’t. She can’t bring herself to hurt the person she loves. Andrey and Goncharov? They can’t bring themselves not to.

It is so funny that two men with homoerotic tendencies towards each other are planning their future after their plan succeeds in front of an apple cart and that Katya shares a serious moment with Sofia under an apple tree because apples are symbolized as the fruit of love and fall of a man in sin.

“Being gay in a straight marriage is a red flag”
Uuuuuuuh unless it’s to escape a Russian prison and run away to Italy with your “wife” (who is in a lesbian relationship) and erotically eat anchovies with your past/present lover who throws you out the glass clock tower and you see him grab hold of your pocket watch as you fall and the last thing you glimpse is the glimmer of hope in his eye as he turns away from your broken body at the riverside??????

Someone should really make an analysis on the flower language Goncharov uses. There aren't many flowers but those few instances we get are pretty clear on purpose. Like the edelweiss association with Andrey representing him going to dangerous places because of love. Resilience despite the coldness in his life– since Goncharov can't properly face the tenderness and love he has for his friend. Edelweiss flowers grow on very high and cold places in the Alps, so giving it to someone you love is like doing the ultimate effort for them. Goncharov is an Edelweiss to Andrey, that he would go for him to the end of the world. But, it could also represent that his betrayal is the ultimate sacrifice he has to make... that leaves no sorrow left in him.
It's very on point, also, that the only other times other flowers are associated with those two is when they are most intimate. In those moments it's a bit more subtle but there are some red and yellow roses, which represent passion and love, but friendship and jealousy, respectively speaking. Both of those roses keep at play some other parts of the movie. Not only because the red rose is the flower of excelence for drama, tragedy and love. But also because in contrast with the yellow one, it plays a bit on the Sofia-Katya/Andrey-Goncharov drama that permeates the movie.
Finally, if you think about it, flowers make a parallel to the time motif. You know that flowers more sooner than later do dry and die. Just as some characters seem to be more or less consciously aware of their time left until their own petals turn palid brown and fall to the ground.

Why isn't anybody talking about Andrey and Katya's scene in the bathtub? Katya's complete faith in him despite knowing he's Goncharov's man first? Does it simbolize the dream of unity and friendship beyond any rational consideration? Does it tell us about Katya's disregard for her own life?
Either way, what I don't really understand is.......why was Ice Pick Joe's berret there?

I swear Scorsese did such a good job with the “destined to destroy each other” motif
Anyone else love how the first and last scenes with Goncharov and Andrey mirror each other?
When they meet, Andrey pulls out his gun, and Goncharov smiles. Andrey wants to shoot, but he doesn’t. Goncharov laughs, and looks at the clock.
And then. Andrey pulled out his gun. Andrey shoots Goncharov. Goncharov wants to laugh, but he doesn’t. He doesn’t get the chance. His time has run out.
Ugh I’m just so glad Goncharov (1973) is back, I’m glad I got to see this masterpiece.
