Synopsis

Ivy is a baker and cookie seller for the famous Italian bakery Le Levain Roma. She briefly appears in Rowdy Rick's murder investigation when Argo and Issac question her about who bought gingerbread from her.

Later, on New Year's Eve, Ivy returned as a suspect in the murder of Romulus Fabbri after clues led Isaac and Maddie to her workplace. During her first interrogation, Ivy claimed not to know anything about the murder or Romulus but was shocked to hear the man was dead. She told the detectives that he had visited the bakery, and she served him cannolis with him leaving her a tip in return. She explained that he was charming and had promised to visit the bakery again, but unknown to Isaac and Maddie, Ivy was omitting some information from her statement.

Further into the investigation, Isaac and Maddie discover Ivy’s necklace in one of their crime scenes. When they questioned her about how it could have gotten there, Ivy admitted that Romulus had ripped the necklace off her neck and taken it after she refused to refund him. Ivy swore she hadn’t killed Romulus and planned to beg him to return the necklace after her shift. Luckily, it was proven that Ivy didn’t kill Romulus after the actual killer was arrested.

Ivy appeared one more time during that case’s additional investigation. When Maddie, Charlie and Jason visited the bakery, she fulfilled their request for some bomboloni. She gave them to the group for free as thanks for everything they had done and New Haven. Ivy invited them to come back and visit any time, and she would ensure treats would always be waiting for them!

I considered naming her Holly as I wanted a Christmas-themed name, but I associate that name with Holly Hopper, so I went with Ivy, from the song The Holly and The Ivy instead

I'd love to hear your thoughts on S1 of ST being a tragedy! No main character dies, so I never thought of it that way before

I mean, nobody has to die for a story to be a tragedy (at least, in the modern definition. I'm pretty sure '(almost) everybody dies' is a requirement of Greek tragedies and Renaissance revenge tragedies). But also, no main character dies in season one...if you take season one as part of a series. Which it wasn't originally conceived as.

I am not going looking for copies of the original pitch bible, because I am lazy, and also I only saw them floating around this webbed site. But the show changed a lot from the initial pitch (Joyce had a Long Island accent! Lucas' parents were divorcing! Murray was there and named Terry Ives! Most of what ended up in Hopper's character originally belonged to Mr. Clarke! The original pitch bible is fascinating). And part of the original pitch was a proposal for possible sequels.

The Duffers' proposal for a possible sequel was "It's ten years later, and Eleven is dead".

So that's the setup. Everything that came after season one was made up wholecloth after season one was a hit and people wanted more, but also people loved the adorable little psychic murder child (cue the Duffers shockedpikachu.jpg) and Netflix obviously recognised it would be a bad call to make a new season without her in it. So it makes sense to take season one as a unit, as a self-contained story on its own. You can also take it as part of a whole, but it makes sense to read it first as a complete story. Especially given the thematic drift of later seasons and the way they are...I'm just going to say it, each new season is very much added-on to what came before rather than being built on foundation that the earlier season(s) laid. It is very clear there was never a planned five-season story arc from the beginning. (This isn't necessarily always a bad thing, when it comes to sequels, but it does mean it makes sense to 'read' each season as its own thing.)

Okay, now that we've established all of that. Season one has one very clear goal, one very clear stake for the characters: save Will Byers from the Upside Down. (I like this. It makes the stakes both extremely high and extremely personal, it makes it very easy to understand each character's motivation, it also keeps the stakes grounded in reality. I like this a lot.) And by the end of the season, that goal is accomplished. So at first blush, you're right, season one doesn't look like a tragedy.

But when you start to unpack it a little, you start to see just how many important things were lost along the way. It's most glaringly obvious with Mike and El, with Nancy and Barb. The whole Wheeler family is fractured down the middle, with Mike and Nancy on one side and Ted, Karen, and Holly on the other, and Karen, who's been trying so hard the whole time to be part of her children's lives and understand what's going on with them, is aware of the ever-expanding gulf between them but will never be able to cross it, and will never fully know why. Hopper's finally managed to snatch a kid out of the jaws of death, save a woman he obviously cares about from the pain of losing a child, and Joyce has finally had someone believe her, support her, trust her. But it became blindingly obvious to me on my fourth rewatch that Hopper's plan, from the moment he went to leave the middle school gym, was always to trade El for Will. And that decision (and the fact that Joyce obviously understands that he did something to get the lab to let them go after Will, but she obviously doesn't dare press him on what) has broken her trust in him, and left him with what looks like an equally heavy burden of guilt as what he was carrying before. The lab stays open. The government gets away with everything. No one will ever know the true extent of the hurt they've caused.

And in the end, none of it even saved Will. He's back. He's alive. But he's spitting slugs in the sink. He's permanently marked by the Upside Down, and by trying to hide it from his family, he's putting a crack down the centre of them, as well. They're losing Will, just as surely as they had when they thought he was dead, just without him going anywhere.

And there's still a hole in the world.

The fragile bonds of community, the things that people share in common, the way catastrophe can bring people together and bring out the very best in them, are the major thematic threads woven through season one. Human connection is the only thing that can change what seems inevitable, the only thing that can bring back what's seemingly lost forever.

And it's still not enough to protect anyone from the random tragedy of the world.

The love was there. The love mattered. The love bent the entire course of the world around itself.

And it still wasn't quite enough.

If that's not a tragedy, then I don't know what is.

I know Noah's coming out isn't supposed to be about Byler, but I will take the liberty to make a comparison re: coming out.

Noah just came out now in 2023, at the age of 18 and in college, after spending his late childhood and teenhood playing a gay character (which means his family and manager(s) were fine with it), when he's rich and famous, living in progressive cities, surrounded by plenty of LGBTQ people (real and fictional), and still described himself as being scared in the closet. Judging by many reactions from the public, as well as the general situation in many parts of the U.S. and the world, it's safe to say that, while he found widespread support from his fans and those close to him, his fears are founded and his coming out is relevant today.

Now imagine how hard and scary it would be for 15-year-old Will to come out of the closet in a small town in Indiana in the '80s, at the height of the AIDS epidemic, with no sex ed or positive LGBT role models to speak of (for him or anyone else), in an environment where he was bullied by his peers at school and by his own dad for even seeming gay before he was old enough to experience sexual attraction, where homosexuality is seen as satanic and wrong, and where, upon his disappearance, him being the victim of a hate crime at the age of 12 was the first reasonable hypothesis. What can we expect from his situation?

Having a grand coming out scene and having people be all "yeah we know!" and exchanging $5 bills from their bets while many others come out as well would be wildly unrealistic. Even merely having him come out voluntarily without the influence of a substance or extraordinary circumstances, or without being yanked out of the closet (for example, by Vecna), before having left Hawkins, would be pushing it by a lot. Will will be terrified to confess to Mike (and vice versa), and they both are probably terrified by the prospect of anyone else knowing, even if they are their friends and they're good people. And with the AIDS issue, things get more complicated.

Having all the non-villain characters be some flavor of supportive or at least non-homophobic (still worried for them tho) might be realistic and doable because this story is about outcasts facing supernatural horrors and knowing truths that regular people ignore. Their minds are probably more open and their bonds stronger, in part thanks to trauma. What's having your male friends be in love with each other when you just faced real-life Satan? What is NOT realistic is that they're familiar enough with anything other than heteronormativity. This means that 1. they (especially the younger ones) wouldn't know how to spot the signs of homosexuality other than stereotypes, let alone see when someone is in love with someone else of the same sex, or when two people of the same sex are in love with one another; and 2. when they see something like two boys or two girls making out or having public displays of affection, it will shock them. If, for example, Dustin or Lucas sees Will and Mike kissing, it will form a core memory. They'll remember when and where they were when they saw it. They'll have lots of questions or assumptions, some of them insensitive (for example, "who's the man and who's the woman in the relationship?").

If I were to predict Will's coming out, barring Vecna or something else forcing him out of the closet, I'd say by the end of the show he and Mike will be explicitly out to each other after some emotionally charged scene (and Byler will be canon), and to Jonathan, Joyce, and Karen. And that "coming out" might just be like the scene between Jonathan and WIll in season 4. I'd say El finds out about Mike's feelings for Will and that causes her breakup with Mike, and there will be an implied understanding with Hopper (who tells El to not mention a word of it to anyone), Nancy and Ted (Holly's just a child). Maybe Murray will sense it or find out by himself. Mike and Will will leave town in the end, and the rest of the Party, as well as Steve and Robin (yes, Robin) and the rest of the town, will be none the wiser. It will probably be implied that they will find over the years because they're their friends and not dumb, but not by the time the show ends. I say Robin can tell that Will is gay, but she doesn't necessarily know about Mike, let alone their relationship, and/or she'll suspect but choose to not dig further.

Obviously, the Duffers can do whatever they want with their narrative, they can make Will come out and have everyone throw him a coming out party while the entire town sings Kumbaya together. I'm just talking about what would be realistic and faithful to the time period (since that's what they have been trying to do).

Music and laughter, and we're young and alive

In which Jonathan gets hurt, and the people who love him realise just how much he's taken on.

Chapter 1: Take Me Out Tonight

Jonathan dies on a Tuesday.

They're in the back of a van. Speeding towards the only clinical space that's still functioning, the FEMA field hospital just outside of town. (Argyle is doing a surprisingly good job of driving both double the speed limit and safely.)

She'd watched and waited in the final showdown, building the strategy so that all they had to do (ha!) was get to Vecna and strike him down. The demodogs and bats had been neutralised, radio communication turned off, and Jonathan (against everybody's wishes) had volunteered as the distraction. ("Will and El are going to need you two, and Mike and Holly need their big sister.")

Time had stretched and warped like taffy, but they could still recognise it was taking too long. Something wasn't right, but what? She and Joyce had stood close to one another, the chief peering out into the ash and smoke, until-

Will had stumbled through the gate bloodied under his nose, tripping on the rubble. "Vecna's gone, but Jonathan's hurt! I can't pick him up on my own, I tried, but El's too drained to help!"

All three had thrown caution to the wind (nothing new there). They'd gone carefully through the gate itself, but dashed after him toward the ruins of the Creel house. Jane was knelt over a prone body, and-

Her knees wobbled.

Jonathan. His shirt-front slick with blood, stretched out like a pieta. Gazing up at El, breathing something as she gripped him, her tears making trails in the grime on his cheek.

Of course. Of course he would try to comfort her.

"*Gasp*-you're gonna be al-*gasp*-right. 'S all gone. You an' Will are-*rasp*-be okay. Find-hnngh-find out what makes you hap-happy. M'kay?"

His breath gurgled in his throat.

El had managed to pull together a watery smile, then glanced up, seeing their rescue party. "Look! They will help us get you out. You will be okay too. You-you just have to stay awake a little longer!"

He'd visibly shaken himself awake, corners of his mouth turning up as his brother had laid his hand on his shoulder. Reassuring someone else again.

Moving him had broken the spell.

"We have to stop the bleeding from these cuts, we need bandages." (Joyce had pressed the shredded remains of her shirt into the chief's hands, a few knotted together into a skein. She'd had to do something with her hands while they waited.)

"This is gonna hurt, kid. And you don't hold it in. Making noise is a way of dealin' with pain.'

They'd met gazes briefly, before Will was lifting Jon's shoulders and Hopper was winding the bandage around his torso. A tiny nod, then the chief pulled it taut, and a wail of agony ripped itself from the boy's chest. Jonathan was insensible for a few seconds, fighting against their hands like a rabbit in a snare, only stilling when Will's fingers began to soothe through his hair. He whimpered, tears rolling into his hairline.

"Shh, it's okay Jon. You're gonna be okay, just let us help you..."

He'd made a guttural noise when they arranged him across their laps, El curled up and watching from one of the jumpseats. Hopper knelt beside him, keeping pressure on as many wounds as his hands could stretch to. Argyle was grim in the driver's seat, following Joyce's directions.

They were almost at the gates when Jonathan's hand had gone limp on top of Will's. The tips of his fingers, dipped, gracefully, to the floor.

A tiny gust of breath had escaped his lips, and those warm brown eyes fixed themselves on a spot far into the distance, and then-

There's a low moan of "God no, not again, please-" and the teary young-man's-voice of Will urging him to "Breathe, Jonathan. Come on-".

Jane is stone-silent and still.

Nancy shuts it out. She shuts it out, because she has to. Has to move, has to fight, has to win, has to survive. To compartmentalise means to live. Maybe it even means he gets to live.

(Her own talent for detachment scares her sometimes. Jonathan is the only one who can break her out of her Frozen-Charlotte state because Barb is-)

Don't think about it don't think about it don'tthinkaboutit-

She seals her mouth over Jonathan's between Hopper's rhythmic pounding on his chest. Watches while the open-and-shut of his ribcage flares and sinks. All the while, she consciously blurs the sound around her. His soft, slightly chapped lips are all she can feel.

The world comes back in a rush, like breaking a swimming pool surface. Her heart gets hauled out of her hands, whisked away on a gurney.

The running mass of people turns the corner, and he's gone.

Mike's Unsaid "I Love You"s

"Really? Then Where's my letter?"

Will, Lucas, Dustin, El, Erica and Mike are sitting at the far end of the dining table in the Wheeler house, Mike's parents and sisters as well as other friends and family of the boys scattered around, too. Despite everything going on right now, they still had to eat, and everyone was glad that Karen was such a good cook (with the exception of Ted, whom, despite having been told the truth, still doesn't believe any of what they're saying). Will picks at the food on his plate, glancing around at everyone that's there.

You have Steve, Robin, Jonathan, Nancy, and Argyle in the doorway to the foyer, most likely talking about next steps. Looking past them you could find Ted sitting in his recliner just like always, Holly sitting in his lap. In the kitchen was Karen, Joyce, Hopper, Murray and the rest of the parents all looking visibly concerned, and by the expressions on each of their faces and the constant glances and weak smiles toward the kids, it was obvious they were worried with how to keep all of them safe.

Will sighs before looking up at his friends. None of them had said much at all since sitting down to eat. Two years this had been happening, and things had changed between all of them. Lucas lost his first love, Dustin lost one of the people he looked up to most, El had lost for the first time ever (but she wasn't going to give up just yet), and Mike?

Well, Mike hadn't done much to result in any changes to him, but Will has known Mike for twelve years now, so when he started being colder to everyone and more closed off than normal, Will was shocked to say the least. The problem was that Mike was the most closed off with him, so there wasn't anything that Will could do about it. If his best friend who always opened up to him wasn't going to let him in, what was there to do? Get down on his hands and knees and beg him to tell him what was going wrong? Will may love him, but he wouldn't do something that wasn't warranted and that would only cause him to be embarrassed.

Then, yes, there was the fact of Will being in love with Mike. With it being the year of 1988, Will has officially loved Mike for half a decade. Five whole years. At this point, there was no way that Will would stop loving him any time soon. Even if Mike died tomorrow, Will would still be in love with him for years to come because it's Mike.

"What do you think, Will?" El asks, but it's immediately made clear to everyone that Will has no idea what's going on.

"Hm?" Will hums, wanting to be clued in on the conversation.

That is until his eyes meet Mike's. Usually Mike would be the one to tell him what he missed, rant to him about how wrong someone was about a certain thing they said, eventually leading them down this he said/she said rabbit hole that there was no way of getting out of, but that doesn't happen. Mike gives himself less than a second to continue looking at Will before he's looking down at his plate. Part of it angers Will, but it mostly just makes him sad. Why was Mike being such an asshole to him?

"Are you okay? You've been spacing out a lot lately," Lucas asks.

"Yeah, I'm fine," Will lies, and everyone quickly believes him– everyone but Mike.

"Bullshit," Mike mumbles, trying to be quiet but when it comes to making sure Will is okay that's never really been possible for him (except for when they were alone and it was just the two of them, or he was able to get close enough to Will to whisper in the quietest, softest voice that Will had ever heard).

"You don't get to call bullshit on what I say anymore."

"Too late. I just did."

"And yet you couldn't have been bothered to care to ask how I was feeling."

Mike drops his fork, and Will watches as his jaw shifts, his tongue poking at both of his cheeks from the inside. He's trying not to say something, but it doesn't last long.

"It's not my fucking job to check up on you 24/7," Mike says, pushing back his chair and standing up from the table, one foot out the room when Will stands up, too.

"Then what the hell have you been doing your whole life? Pretending to not be a self-centered asshole? Are you really that vain and selfish?"

"I'm not selfish!"

"Because that totally explains why you only ever open up to someone when it's convenient for you."

"What the hell are you even talking about?"

"I mean when El was with Brenner again and you used me in an emotionally vulnerable state to get me back on your side, but you didn't need that for me to be ready to go find her because in case you didn't notice, Mike, she's my sister. Then there was when you and El broke up and you begged her to say because you claimed to need her, but you were doing completely fine without her, weren't you? After all, she's not the reason Hawkins felt different, I was. Or was that just another lie? Part of me kind of hopes it was because that would just be gold. Pure fucking gold for Mr. Friends Don't Lie to turn out to be the biggest liar around!"

"Here you are yelling at me and yet you're trying to call me the selfish asshole? El and I breaking up has nothing to do with you, and then you use it for your own personal gain in an argument about selfishness? How about how..."

Mike continues yelling, following Will as he makes his way upstairs, trying to get away from everyone and all of the noise. Will walks into Mike's room, covering his ears, but that doesn't keep him from being able to hear Mike's muffled yells and the bedroom door slamming shut behind him. Will's head is swimming, pounding, a headache quickly pinching at all of the nerves in his brain as Mike continues to be furious with him, and Will had no idea why, because to him what he'd said was true. That didn't change the fact that Mike clearly had very differing views. In all truthfulness, Will almost forgot what they were fighting about. All Will knows at this point is that he can't take Mike's yelling anymore, so he snaps— he really snaps.

"You know I find it real funny how you haven't cared at all about anything I've had to say for years, and yet all of a sudden I say one thing that was meant as a joke and it's the biggest thing in the world. Do you even realize how fucking stupid that sounds? You have made it so glaringly clear that you don't give a shit about anyone but yourself, which what once would've been totally unlike you now but now seems like your only personality trait. I mean, you are such a douchebag, Mike! I can't believe I once thought that you actually cared about me!"

"Will, you know that's not true! Of course I care about you!"

"Really? Then where's my letter? Or do I have to remind you that you only called me three times out of an entire year?"

Mike's raises his eyebrows, clenching his jaw as he walks over to his bedside table while starting to yell again. Will falls to the ground, placing his hands on the back of his head, trying to keep himself from punching something. He's about to get up and leave when Mike throws a pile of papers at Will's feet, his anger still not having left yet. Will looks up at Mike with a hateful, questioning glare before picking up one of the papers. A letter, Will quickly notes as he starts to read.

"There. My heart laid bare on every single one of those stupid letters that, for some reason, I couldn't ever bring myself to send, but it's not because I don't care about you, Will. Of course I care about you! It's all that I have ever done! I don't know a single moment of my life where I haven't cared about you. You are quite literally the first thing I think about every morning I wake up and every time that I fall asleep. You somehow even find a way to sneak into my dreams, not to mention my love letters to my girlfriend that I didn't even realize were love letters to you until I had finished writing them, and I knew that I couldn't send them because then 'What would Will think?' and I know that it's stupid because you out of all people would understand, but it's not that easy, Will.

"And I'm sorry, okay? I am so, so sorry for never sending you any letters but it's a lot more than me suddenly not caring anymore because believe me Will, I care. I care so damn much that I'm pretty sure that, at this point, it's too much, because I don't think I can take it anymore!"

Will is staring at the bottom of the first letter he had picked up, his pointer finger resting on the words signed at the bottom. He quickly glances away as he shifts through the rest of the letters with his free hand, them all saying the same thing at the end, and there's dozens of them. It's like someone dumped the entire gift card aisle at the store into his lap, and Will had to look at every single one.

"And now you're not even paying attention to me. Great. Just great..." Will can hear Mike mumble, his anger having slowed and now feeling simple frustration as he turns around and rests his hands on his dresser.

"Mike," Will says with a gulp at the end, unsure if what he's reading has the implications that he thinks. "You signed all of these 'Love, Mike.'"

"I know," Mike make breathes, not turning around, his head hung low.

Will looks up from the letters finally, keeping one held in his hand as he stands up and moves to be standing behind Mike. He holds the paper out where both of them can see, one of his arms snaking around Mike's waist without either of them realizing it as Will tries to convey the thoughts that he's having, but it's hard when he's just yelled all of those words at the top of his lungs.

"You wrote that you love me," Will says, letting the letter fall onto the top of the dresser.

"Like I said, my heart laid bare."

"Why didn't you ever say anything? You had two whole years, Mike, and not a word about any of this."

"I was scared, okay? I didn't want you thinking anything bad about me or that there was something wrong with me because even I still feel like there is."

"Mike, nothing in this world could make me think that about you. You're my best friend and...and I have been in love with you for five years now, which is crazy to me because we were just kids and I thought that it was because we hung out all of the time so that's why I felt those things, but...but then I moved and just, god, the mere thought of you was able to make me blush like crazy. I felt like a madman while I was in California waiting for a call or a letter from you or something, but it never came, and I was still somehow so in love with you and– and I still am. God, Mike, how could you not see it? How could you not know that I'm in love with you?"

Silence falls over them, Mike finally turning and looking at Will, their eyes meeting for only the second time tonight. Will stares at the brown surrounding Mike's iris, taking it in. They haven't really made eye contact like this since Mike had come to visit in California and he and Will got into that huge fight at the roller rink, but that was the last time until now that they'd held any eye contact for more than five seconds. Now with how Mike was staring at him, Will thought he just might burst. It took everything in him not to smile, but he did it anyway because looking into Mike's eyes just made him feel so happy that he couldn't help it.

Mike lets out a small laugh, resting his forehead against Will's, all of that tension from moments ago finally starting to slip away. Will chuckles and snorts a little bit, one of Mike's hands finding its way to cup Will's cheek, the other still planted firmly on the dresser, his fingers holding the edge of the letter in place.

"All this time I thought that you were just being weird about your best friend dating your sister," Mike says, and that causes Will to laugh even more, his eyes crinkling shut as his head falls against Mike's chest.

"What? If that was the case then we should've been fine ages ago."

"Not when I was as scared as I was about you finding out– about anyone finding out."

"I know the feeling," Will says, looking Mike in the eyes once again.

"At least now we know."

Mike leaves a soft kiss on the tip of Will's nose before his arms snake under Will's, pulling him into a hug. They haven't hugged since Will moved to Cali, and that was three years ago now. Three whole years without them having really touched each other at all. The closest thing they'd gotten to their usual comfortability was Mike placing his hand on Will's shoulder once he'd found out that Vecna was still alive, and that he was still a threat. That the Mind Flayer was back, too, and that the two weren't going to stop until everyone was dead.

Will rests his head on Mike's shoulder, the two of them holding each other so gently and yet so tightly at the same time. Will feels warm and fuzzy, like he's on the top of the world. He had been right after all about Mike not having changed, he had just gone about how he dealt with his feelings differently, and Will was glad that he'd picked up on it, because he knows what it's like to be in Mike's position. The being scared of people knowing the truth about who you are and who love, but Will is glad that now he knows, because now he's not alone. Now neither of them are alone.

“Hi,” said Nancy.
