Note
for ship bingo: tyrian x fiona of course, but also ironhill and ladybug!
Thank you for the ask!! This will be a ramble of me, so I'll put my opinions under "read more"
Invisible Poison (Fiona x Tyrian)💚💜
Tumblr media
Funnily enough, despite me being the one who introduced you to this ship, I will admit that my liking for them has sort of lowered, but I do know it has to do with Fiona not being that much explored as a character, so putting her together with an ecentric character like Tyrian, with who she doesnt have any type of dynamic with, does make it a little bit hard for me to get very invested in the ship :[
But I am re-watching RWBY, so when I'll get to Vol 7, I'll see Fiona once again and my spark for the pairing could come back.
(Can we also talk about how no one seems to have writen a single fic about them? Not even a smut one? But at the same time there's 7 works of Jaune x Fiona??
Y'know, shit is getting hopeless if no one in RWBY fandom had made at least one chapter of you ship in their extremly smutty fic :/)
(I already have many wips, but screw it, they're on my priority wip lists now...I say as I haven't touched my Tyrian x Fiona wip for a whle now)
Despite my lowered love for them, I know that what drew me to this ship at first, was their Faunus identities - Fiona being a sheep Faunus & Tyrian is a scorpion Faunus.
I still dont know how to put in words, but with both being different type of Faunus, it would have been interesting to have it explored how both could've been treated because of their identities and how it impacted them. (I know this isnt much of a point towards the ship, but hush)
In general, the whole "sheep = innocent" "scorpion = dangerous" thing and have these two different people some odd Enemies to Lovers story going on between them.
Also Tyrian is the type of character who does know how to push others buttons, so I like the idea of him meeting Fiona and him noticing things about her that she may hide about herself from others. (Which would have explored Fiona's character a bit). And he just keeps pushing these buttons.
Then there's also their loyalty to their leaders - both being devoted to Robyn/Salem, but the difference is that Fiona & Robyn care about each other and have a good relationship, while Tyrian has unhealthy dynamic with Salem.
So, yay parallels...sort of.
Even if there isn't much in canon, except for Tyrian attacking Fiona, this pairing in fanon is still interesting and in a way funny if we focus on the absurd humor potential.
Like, imagine Tyrian of all people having this lovely family life with Fiona?? (I actually drew a fankid for them :D)
Tumblr media
(For now I have named her Ophelia)
Just like in fanon, they would be fun to explore in AUs.
Them knowing each other since they were kids, but not being excatly friends? Tyrian ditching Mantle as he grows up and the elections being a place where they reunite after all these years?
I can smell the angst here, fellas.
This isn't mine AU, but an AU where Tyrian is one of the Ace Ops? What then their dynamic could've been?👀
Of course, there's the whole aesthetic of their characters, which I like.
In general, I like them and think it would be an interesting pairing to explore.
Ironhill (Ironwood x Robyn) 🤍💚
Tumblr media
Gonna be honest, I have wanted to talk about them without worrying I might be annoying, but now that I've been asked about them, my brain suddenly is empty, not knowing what correct answer should I give😅
(I haven't watched Vol 7 for a while now, so might misremember some of the stuff)
I actually didn't expect myself to even consider this ship at all, but then this happened
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Robyn, who up until this moment didn't trust Ironwood, realized that he genuinly cares and wants to protect others, that he isn't doing all of this for himself. He isn't her enemy.
(The way both at the start looked each other with distrust and dislike in their eyes, only for the way they look change as their views of the other change as well)
And it pretty much made me adore this ship. And of course, there's also their dislike of Jacques as well.
While they didn't share much moments were it as just two of them, them working together was enough for me...I say as them holding hands lives rent free in my hand (👏THEY👏HELD👏HANDS👏YOUR👏HONOR👏)
Of course, them trusting each other isn't the only thing about them.
I really suck at putting my thoughts into words, but while Ironwood does care for both Mantle and Atlas, he still is mostly at Atlas, while Robyn is potrayed to represent Mantle, so like them working together not only to rebuild the hole in the wall in Mantle, but also uniting Atlas and Mantle. And with both of them becoming allies, they wouldn't fall for the bad guys attempts at making them distrust each other. And when the evil is deafeated they would continue working together. (but Vol 8 decided to ruin this idea-)
(As a divorced Ironwatts believer, I also think it would be funny if like Watts saw them on the tv, holding hands and just was a very bitter ex about it.
"Oh, wow. Someone moved on pretty quickly if you ask me🙄😒" he says as it hasn't been 10 years already + the world believes he's dead)
Then there's this small things, like of both having shooting type weapons (and them shooting at Tyrian/Watts is a parallel in my eyes-) and they way they adress one another - "General" & "Miss Hill". There's just something about characters calling the other by anything but their names🤌
Obviously, my mind had to once more imagine a scenario where they protect each other with their weapons and slowly start adressing the other with their first names.
I also once came across a reddit post which talked about how Robyn also seemed to be paraniod and it made me think back to her Semblance and with how Semblances are based on the user, I made a hc that maybe Robyn either had her trust shattered mutliple times in her childhood, making her only to know the truth so she wouldn't get hurt anymore or that behind her confident personality Robyn is nervous/anxious person, which is what resulted into the creaton of her Semblance.
And in a way Ironwood could understand how it feels like you can't always be sure of things or feeling like things will fall apart no matter what and they could develop a bond from it. (which then would make Ironwood's villain arc heartbreaking for Robyn, because to her, he was one of the few who truly understood her struggles)
I know they didn't have much of a dynamic, but I like to imagine them having this teasing going on (with Robyn being the main one to tease Ironwood) Just two of them enjoying each ones company. I'm aware it's mostly fanon, but it's just a fun thing for me.
While I enjoyed this ship, I had been spoiled about Ironwood becoming a villain before, so it kind of sucked seeing the potential of his & Robyn's dynamic and knowing it will not get a chance to get explored. And let me tell you, wasn't big fan of Ironwood's villain arc. Also I started disliking Roby as the Volumes progressed :/
But hey, that's what fanfiction is for right? There's probably something on ao3-Aaaaaaand it's smut. Great, I'm in hell :)
(just watch me, one day I'll post my Ironhill fic)
Ladybug (Blake x Ruby)🖤❤️
Tumblr media
When I started watching RWBY for the first time, they did not catch my eye at all, but then I picked up the show again and BAM Ladybug strucks my heart.
From their conversation in Vol 1, I was quickly sold to this pair. I just like this contrast between them - Ruby the younger, optimistic leader with a dream that can be seen childish and Blake being the more realistic, but outspoken teammate with a huge goal in mind.
Even if they didn't get much screen time together, there still were those small things that made like Ladybug even more - Ruby being the main one who openly worries about Blake after her argument with Weiss or when Blake refused to go to the dance, Ruby being the one to find Blake isn't in her bed and wanting to find her, Ruby straight up not seeing a point to go to the dance if Blake wasn't coming, Ruby being the first one to bring up Blake after she, Weiss and Yang had reunited and being the one who speak with Blake when the reunite with her at the end of Volume 5.
While this all is from Ruby's side, I will add that in Volume 5, Ruby was the first name Blake said whenever she brought up her team to Sun, so a win for shippers/j
Then there's Volume 6 with it's Apathy Arc and let me tell you, when I first watched it, my shippers heart was screaming in joy when Ruby reached out to Blake and activated her Silver Eyes.
Of course there's also Volume 7/8 (?) (i don't remember tbh) with it having Blake's whole speech about how Ruby inspired her, but because I feel like hers and Ruby's relationship didn't get explored in the story, the speech sort of also felt flat, because why not show the progress of how Blake views Ruby.
Their lack of screen time will always annoy me, but this criticism isn't aimed only at Ladybug, but at Team RWBY in general.
So, yeah, wish we had more of them and their reunion in Volume 9 should have been more emotional, but no, only Blake's and Yang's reunion can be emotional, I mean it's not like Blake and Ruby fell down together, with Blake having went after Ruby to save her-OH WAIT.
Anyway, I shall hc that Ruby has a crush on Blake and she's finds herself feeling a bit jealous of Yang.
But yeah, their whole aesthetic/color schemes are very nice.

you want rarepairs/crackships? i'll name you some of mine, so enjoy my long ramble:
-ironhill (Ironwood x Robyn) - HEAR ME OUT! i know Ironwood is disliked in rwby fandom while Robyn is, i'll safely say, unpopular in rwde community, BUT there's a certain charm of shipping disliked character with a liked character, especially when the views of the characters differ in different fandoms. Romeo & Juliet who?/j
But joking aside, i started shipping them when Robyn was like "i thought you were a jerk & didn't care about others, but i was wrong.". Call me basic but i like when two characters find a middle ground/realize they're not what they thought the other one was.
In all honestly their relationship was such a wasted potential and yes i am also saying it because i ship them, but with the theme of trust going around it would have been cool to have Ironwood & Robyn team up and become allies - with Ironwood representing Atlas & Robyn representing Mantle. Not to mention, BOTH care about their Atlas & Mantle and want the best for it's people. Just two leaders who didnt see eye to eye, only to realize both have the same goals in mind and are not each others enemy (it's Jacques)
Right now i can't name other reasons why you should like my ironhill propaganda, but consider this - they both hate jacques so that should be a sign they're soulmates/j & they both having shooting type weapons.
But even if you don't ship it, you have to admit their relationship was a wasted potential :/
-invisible poison(?) (Tyrian x Fiona) - HEAR ME OUT...it is mostly centered around them being Faunus, BUT the thing is Fiona is a sheep Faunus and Tyrian is a scorpion Faunus. Sheeps in general are seen in a positive light, while scorpions are seen in a negative light.
It's hard to put in words, but it would be interesting to explore how these two, while being Faunus had different experiences with how others treated them due to what type of Faunus they are. (Not to say Fiona never got discriminated against for being a Faunus in general).
Both are also very loyal to their leaders (Salem & Robyn), so yeah parallels...sort of. And my mind then came up with a scene where they fight and Fiona questions Tyrian on how he could be loyal to someone like Salem and he answer with that Salem is the only one who accepts him fully, never treating him badly due to him being a Faunus, UNLIKE certain other leader who called a dog Faunus "Waggs" & just makes Fiona question her role in HH and if she would have been treated differently by them if she had been a "dangerous" type of Faunus (but let's be honest he would mostly say this to mess with her)
There's the whole aesthetic/tropes with them too - short x tall, good x evil, kind x terrible etc. And I once decided to search them on google in case I find something, and while it wasn't a fanart, I did found a drawing of them together, so that's something.
-firewall/electric fire (?) (Watts x Cinder) - they hate each other and that whole balcony scene of Watts calling out Cinder's bullshit. Also unlike Ironwatts & Ironwood x Jacques, instead of them having divorced & sick of each other exes vibe, they rather have two people who refuse to get a divorce because they're petty af and want to see the other sufer. Next question
-target practice/pvp (?) (Penny x Pyrrha) - i might not ship it as i used to, but i think it started when i thought about how Pyrrha died thinking Penny is dead (which she was and will be), while Penny got brought back, not knowing Pyrrha is dead (does she know it is unknown but for the sake of angst im chosing this option) and then my mind thought of PvP Childhood AU, where Penny got the chance to travel around the world years ago and befriended Pyrrha with them keeping in touch over the years and getting to see each again other at the Vytal festival.
And yes that does make their fight a lot more devastating because now Pyrrha dies feeling the guilt of killing her best friend and Penny comes back only to learn her best friend is gone and died not knowing she's alive (if we assume bringing Penny took a lot of time).
Aside from the angst, I think they could have had a cute dynamic :)
-envy zinnia (Emerald x Ren) - it's the "because she's scared just like us" for me (dont remember if he said that because he used his semblance). It's the way Emerald reacted to his words and denied them. It's the way Ren looked at Emerald while others were arguing about her joining the team (i think it was Yang who mostly against it).
It's the idea of Emerald assuming Ren can read her well because of his semblance and trusts her based on that, only to learn he had never used his semblance and trusts her, because he wants to and sees good in her for me.
It's the idea of Ren feeling complicated about his feelings about Nora, because he feels like he should fall in love with her given she's his best friend and had always been by his side, only to fall in love with his former enemy. (nooo, i did not drop the summary of my wip here, nooo)
There isn't much with this ship, for me this mostly being "hey this is a neat one" only to then imagine Emerald getting flustered over Ren holding her hand or looking at her with a soft gaze in his eyes.
OKAY YOU SENT ME A LOT (WHICH I LOVE THANK YOU SO SO MUCH) so im gonna put my responses under a readmore bc i do actually wanna put thought into each of these
okayyyyy lets start with IRONHILL: well i think ironwood is a whole gay man but thats just MY hc so like. of the female characters u can ship him with its not the WORST option? like i 100% totally get what u mean that sometimes theres so much wasted potential or a better story hidden behind a dynamic that you either dont get to see on screen or doesnt get nearly enough to work with that u kinda end up shipping them just bc u want more of them. im not sure i see any romantic or sexual chemistry between them personally so i feel like i would "ship" them as like Business Partners. like
robyn: would you like... to form an alliance with me
james: ... yes, yes i would
robyn: EXCELLENT >:333
NOW TYRION/FIONA. This Interests Me. like i love corruption type romances, where the innocent or happy or naive one gets a dark or bad boy or straight up evil lover. some real hades/persephone type shit. ive said before that i love angel/demon imagery and u cant get more heavenly than a lamb. also i do agree that i think their parallels of their roles are very interesting and i also dont like robyn so anything that gets fiona away from her is good with me! i feel like i would really love like almost a roleswap of them? like a fiona slated to be a maiden candidate for salem, on the bad guys side, and a tyrion that was still fucked up but he is like on ironwoods payroll as a ace-op special assassin or something, like i feel like that would be really fun LOL or like a tryion that was just SLIGHTLY less insane and not on salems side but like is still a bad guy and he gets wounded and fiona finds him dying in the woods or something and brings him back to her little cottage and fixes him up and they bond as he recovers like THATS TASTY
cinder/watts im not a fan of. i do get what u mean about them having toxic divorced exes energy but i feel like watts/ironwood does that in a way sexier and fun way and i dont want to subject cinder to that sort of vibe tbh (i have another cinder-centric rarepair thats genuinely my cinder otp so theres also that)
TARGET PRACTICE IS A FUCKED UP NAME FOR PYRRHA/PENNY SKCBSODBSPEHEJ but pvp is deffo something i get... in a completely au context. like nothing about their canon vibes click for me? but with ur whole childhood friends thing i get it; i think like if somebody told me to outline a pvp fic, i would like. okay pyrrha is brought to beacon on a special recommendation and before she even starts the school, shes brought in and told about the maidens and magic and penny and the proposal to make her the next autumn and penny the next winter and ironwood and ozpin ask if shes willing and if she is, will she work with penny? and the two of them are assigned as partners (meaning jaune gets a new partner which according to canon would be WEISS so hello thats fun) and they bond and struggle with making friends and being 'normal' with these pressures and its quite bittersweet and emo and cute i like it
NOW YOU HAVE TOTALLY SOLD ME ON EMERALD/REN. i love putting ren with literally any other character and i feel like emerald has such a simple but good character that she can fit with a lot of people and tbh u really have sold me on them. i really like the imagery of like ren and emerald both having this barrier for whatever reason that prevents them from being open and honest with their feelings but using their semblances as different private u iqie communication that just WORKS for them they are both autistic and hot and i think they should kiss also their shades of green being complimentary and ren and her just having this really fun dynamic of them both being really snarky and sassy but quiet and observant and they just VIBE im highkey lowkey obsessed with the idea... ren and nora are side characters in my fic but they are on a team with merc and emerald (trust the process) and the plan is currently actually emerald/neon but... somethings may have to be rearranged bc im actually really REALLY into the idea of ren and emerald... SHIT YOU ACTUALLY DID IT YOU ACTUALLY SOLD ME ON REMERALD.....

For context:
In The Little Prince (which it’s safe to say is one of Oscar’s main allusions along with Dorothy and Princess Ozma/Tip), he finds himself trapped in a desert with no way to get back to his rose, and meets a snake. The snake tempts him, promising one venomous bite from him would send him to the heavens and he wouldn’t have to be in this world. This is a trick of course, as he phrases it to imply not death, but more like teleportation back to his home planet. The snake decides the boy is too pure and innocent to kill, however. The Prince ignores him at first, but his loneliness and heartache drives him to plot with the snake to return to his rose, and he allows the snake to bite him. He falls to the sand, unconscious. The narrator never finds his body, and is happy, assuming he made it back home. RWBY loves to pull twists, and hmmm what sort of POISONOUS desert creature could be in VACUO right now? Who might have a reason/orders to target Oscar specifically?
Looking at the night sky, the thing that keeps the prince hopeful in the desert is knowing that somewhere out there amongst the stars is the rose he loves, and that they will one day reunite. The stars are beautiful because his rose is somewhere within them. He soon is told that flowers are “ephemeral” and as such can be gone at any moment, killed in one bite by any passing sheep, and he has a breakdown realizing his rose could die despite all her thorns, could already be dead, and therefore the stars, to him, were dead also. He breaks down crying and yelling at the old man (narrator) for considering the mortality of flowers to be unimportant. The man tries to console him, but cannot find the words, not knowing “how I could reach him, how I could overtake him and go on hand in hand with him once more.” So he simply holds him as he sobs. “It is such a secret place, the land of tears.”
Soon after, the prince comes across a rose garden with thousands of roses just like his, and he is hurt that his rose lied to him about being the only flower of her kind in the universe. But his friend, the wise Fox he met along the way, tells him that it is the time and care he has given his rose that makes her so special. That when you “tame,” aka establish ties with someone, like the prince had with the Fox, you become for one another unique in all the world. But it also leads to longing and weeping when apart. It’s a lesson about friendship and bonds that once the prince understands, says, “There is a rose... I think that she has tamed me.” He then tells the narrator that what some try to find by planting a garden with a thousand roses can be found in a single rose and a handful of water.
OH I JUST REALIZED: the Fox is the one who says the famous quote, “It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye.” Hm, a wise Fox who speaks of the blindness of eyes? In the desert?
There’s a line said by the prince, “What makes the desert beautiful is that somewhere, there is a well.” so maybe they’ll find a well or the Vacuo oasis or something of the sort.
He also calls out to a barren landscape, hoping to hear a voice call back, and upon hearing his echo, assumes he is talking with another person who isn’t himself, but can only repeat what he hears. But the voice he hears is only his own. Is it lonely, after the merge? To call out to a barren landscape and find it is only you who remains? Only the echo of yourself you mistake for company?
So uh Oscar having a mental breakdown in Vacuo, anyone? (We are ignoring that the Prince basically chose to die in the desert out of loneliness)

thots on roman holiday, spoilers for the whole book below!!!
oh my GOD sjjdbdnemakfjen the line on page 17 “you have a unique grasp of socioeconomics” is SO ROMAN FBSBSBDBSJAIDLD. i love it
INVISIBILITY CLOAKS???????
v funny that when roman is considering where to go after leaving mistral, he shoots down vacuo first. obviously he’s gonna wind up in vale bc Plot, but it just feels like the writer going I AM NOT WRITING ANOTHER BOOK IN THE GODDAMN DESERT lmao
interesting note abt beacon tuition on page 92. i wonder if this is actually canon for a few reasons:
how tf would ren and nora afford TUITION????
i wonder if the other huntsman academies have tuition??? like atlas i could see doing it and haven too. maybe not shade but idk.
does this mean scholarships are a thing??? is ruby on scholarship???? what even constitutes a scholarship on remnant????
idk they probably didn’t think this deep abt this joke line but IM GONNA lmao
y’all some of these names…brick??? mortar???? bisque????? burgundy???? roch szalt???????? KANDI FLOSS??????? that last one is peak stripper name meme ansjdbfnnebehd. this is just like in btd when they had to name a team fondue 😭😭😭😭 i think they’re officially running out of colors 😂😂😂
THE EMBLEM OF NEO’S BOARDING SCHOOL IS A TRIPLE SPIRAL?????? the gurren lagann of it all……………
very funny that both neo and roman poison people with sleeping pills. hashtag just bestie things <3
pg146 “to listen to their body and what it was telling them about their feelings (gag)” ASPEC NEO RISE!!!!!!!!!!
ok i May be stupid but i thought everyone had a semblance???? bc semblance comes from aura, and everyone has aura??? maybe it’s just people without activated aura who wouldn’t have a semblance (so like if pyrrha had never unlocked his, jaune would’ve never discovered his semblance???? idk) but i’m also fairly certain roman has an activated aura????
very fond of roman meeting neo and understanding her very easily. platonic soulmatism i think.
ok wait actually i kinda wanna elaborate. LOVE that roman’s whole schtick is that he’s had to look out only for himself his whole life and he doesn’t wanna be a babysitter while neo is SICK of being babysat and so they work well together. ALSO LOVE that BECAUSE roman’s had to look out for himself his whole life, he’s good enough at reading body language and filling in the blanks to know what neo’s saying even without words.
also. hang on. OKAY. so neo gave roman his hat and roman gave neo her umbrella and neo made them BOTH outfits. BUT THEN ROMAN DIES and all neo has LEFT is the HAT SHE GAVE HIM and she goes to HIS OLD BOSS to help herself get revenge AND ONLY THEN DOES SHE CHANGE OUTIFTS????? BITCH??????? CHECK OUT HOW HARD I CAN APPARENTLY CRY OVER THEIR FRIENDSHIP
(okay note on the previous bullet after actually finishing: not the same hat :( and also how did neo convince lil miss malachite to help her when she nearly blew her up??? money ig lmao)
i’m literally obsessed with this being a ya book so roman and neo can’t steal alcohol or drugs, they gotta steal COFFEE 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 LIKE. ITS SO FUNNY TO ME
also in love with how (just like every other rwby friendship!!!!) there isn’t any pointless drama. they trust & love each other and that’s that!!!! like roman’s told that neo sold him out, and despite that being consistent with the rest of his life, he knows that’s not consistent with NEO and sees that she’s come to rescue him so there’s no petty drama around it!!! bc he TRUSTS HER!!!!!
pg268 “neo blinked back tears and hugged roman. ‘hey. don’t wrinkle the suit.’ but he put a hand on her head and over her shoulder, and that felt more like home than that house and her parents had in a long time.” HELLO????? HELL LOOOOO?????? bro i am CRYING i’m gonna SUE
tbh i was really worried they wouldn’t get to hug in this book BUT THEY DID!!!!!!! IM SO HAPPY WTFFFFFF
pg269 “her father threw up his hands. ‘do you know what she wants to say?’ he asked roman. ‘i do, actually.’ roman looked at her fondly. ‘i’m surprised you don’t.’” IM LOSING MY MINDDDDDD THATS LOVE!!!!!!!
pg270 “roman cleared his throat. ‘her name is neo.’” ALSKDJJREJNENFHCISOMENRJDIS BITCH
pg300 “he stopped walking. ‘while you get away. she’s mainly interested in me. drop this disguise and i’ll distract her. you get out of here. and never look back.’ she shook her head defiantly. he tried to pull his hand free, but she only held on more tightly.” 🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺
PAGE THREE HUNDRED AND SEVEN SHE KISSES HIM ON THE CHEEK AJDJFJEJENDNJDN KSIDOEOSPSKEJEHEBE. F THE POWER OF LOVE AND FRIENDSHIP WINS AGAIN
okay okay so now that i’m finished here are my Actual thoughts alskcjejenbrhdisk:
i wish! that more of the book! was focused on roman & neo together and their friendship!! like i get that the first half was important bc they needed to show Just How Alone they both were before each other. but i would’ve gladly traded some of the beginning stuff for just a little more time with the two of them together. like maybe condense some of that and give us a few more anecdotes from their time training together?? just to show the development from wary partners to ride-or-die a little more. but idk. because the first half of the book felt a little slow for me but as soon as i got to the back half i could NOT put it down!!!!!!!!
i owe this writer (& the rwby writers ofc) my heart and soul and also probably my spleen. first cfvy, now roman & neo???? taking characters i didn’t have any strong feelings about but giving them personality and history and love and making ME love them???? AND WRITING FRIENDS/FAMILY SO WELL???? bro. BRO. i’m losing my MIND
ALSO. very excited for neo’s role in v9 now. and will also probably cry.
like. it would’ve been so easy for them to make roman & neo romantic. especially since there’s only like a 4 year age gap. but they DIDNT they let those two BE EACH OTHERS FIRST PRIORITY AND CLOSEST FRIEND AS FRIENDS AND I AM SO ECSTATIC ABT IT HOLY SHIT

more haunted house au! tagging @zacs-of-rwby again
ozpin and glynda are tense bc glynda had a miscarriage. both are quietly devastated by it, with glynda throwing herself into her work and ozpin shutting himself away from the world. in a way, taking care of the ghost kids is bringing him back to life.
ozpin ISN’T ozma’s reincarnation in this au, they just look alike, like the mom and the dead bride in disney’s haunted mansion movie.
the younger kids, usually oscar and ruby, sometimes forget that ozpin isn’t their father, so ozpin will occasionally hear a little voice yell “daddy!” when glynda isn’t around.
the kids are occasionally visible, but entirely nonverbal. ozpin isn’t sure if its trauma bc of their deaths or just how ghosts work.
Ozpin is very good at determining which invisible ghost kid is which. like *chandelier shakes like someone fell to the ground above it* Ozpin: Nora! Stop horseplaying with Pyrrha!
ozpin writing a guide to how ghosts work and everyone slams it on amazon reviews.
ozpin and glynda have guests over--like, glynda’s sister is a really snooty mean lady--and the kids prank them out of the house. they throw things at her, they keep her up at night, she thinks she’s going insane, while ozpin is in the background, sipping hot chocolate and thinking “this is what you get for visiting without warning, BRENDA.”
*Yang, pushing brenda out the door* Ozpin: Don’t let the door hit you on the way out!
the kids make a game out of trying to get glynda to believe. ozpin is the referee who “enforces” the rules like “no direct contact” and “no writing in spilled flour or other substances”
Ozpin wants to get to know the kids better, both because he’s living with them but also because they’re dead kids, he wants to help them move on. So he starts to research the family outside of ozma’s journals.
He discovers that the police originally suspected that ozma killed the kids due to the unnatural way they died and also because he killed himself right after the interrogation the police did. ozpin immediately discounts this theory bc ozma loves his kids so much
no one really suspected salem; she was considered a socialite and beloved by the nearby town, but her disappearance after the deaths was weird. ozpin’s research shows no sign of salem, not even appearing in other cities. She just... vanishes.
and ozpin starts to doubt the “death by carbon monoxide poisoning”. he calls up the real estate agency to ask about the furnace and learns that the previous furnace was old, but in great condition. Plus, why didn’t ozma and salem die too? gas leaks everywhere, not just into the kids rooms.
So ozpin decides to ask the kids. He originally tries a spirit box but either it doesn’t work or the kids don’t like it so there’s no response.
Of course, it could also be the nearing anniversaries of their deaths that’s making the kids silent.
He decides on a ouiji board and try to contact them then, a few days before their death day. Only... he doesn’t contact the kids.
“Is there anyone here right now?” YES
“What is your name?” S A L E M

Okay, now it’s time for team JNPR to get Dungeoneering. And first up is our good boy Jaune Arc! All about healing and protection, with just a touch of deviousness. Let’s see what we got.
For this build we want to be mostly basic: armor, shield, sword, and the ability to use them all. Jaune does have the ability to heal and boost his allies, mind, so that’s going to be important. And as much as he’s tall, blonde, and scraggly, he does have an ability to talk to people when he’s not overcome with doubt.
So, point array as per usual, and I’m going to be unconventional and give Jaune 15 points in Wisdom; he’s only really dense when he’s focused on image rather than the person, and once he works through that he’s actually able to make some very good points. Strength is next with 14 points--the dude served as a launching pad for an AMAZON GLADIATOR one time! And we follow that up with Charisma at 13 points, he has a lot of charm when he’s not trying to be suave. Also, we’ll be multiclassing (gasp) so Jaune needs all three of those to be 13 or higher. Constitution gets the 12 point marker, boy has a lot of aura, and Intelligence has 10 points because, well, he’s not dumb but he’s got a lot to catch up on in school. That leaves 8 points for Dexterity, and I mean... Jaune is not nimble. At all.
Variant humans get two ability points they can spend anywhere, so evening out Wisdom to 16 and Charisma to 14 might be useful. They also get a free skill proficiency, and Jaune is good with a guitar, so I figure we’d get Performance (not like we’ll get it anywhere else). And of course there’s a free feat--War Caster lets a character cast spells while their hands are occupied with a sword or shield, plus they have advantage on Constitution saves to keep up concentration spells and they can use spells in their attacks of opportunity. This is an absolute must for Sword/Shielders with a lot of magic and, trust me, Jaune will have a LOT of magic.
Jaune forged his way into Beacon--spoilers, BTW--so we’ll pick up the Charlatan background for him. That gives him proficiencies in Deception, Sleight of Hand, Disguise Kits, and Forgery Kits. It also gives him the False Identity feature, so he has the ability to pass as his cousin from Mexico Vacuo without anybody asking questions, and he can forge documents if he’s seen a copy of them before. I mean, Jaune’s a nice guy and all, but remember that time he suggested the group steal an airship? And his big sister helped him? The Arcs are one heck of a family, I gotta say.
The obvious class choice for Jaune would be Paladin... and that’s exactly what we’re going with. Twelve levels as a Glory Paladin, which gives him proficiency with all weapons, armors, shields, Charisma and Wisdom saving throws, and two more skills. Athletics and Persuasion would be my pick, the guy might fumble a little sometimes but he keeps up with his team when the going gets tough. Multiclassing into Cleric doesn’t give us any new proficiencies, but it does give us access to Cleric spells and a Domain; Solidarity Clerics really fit well with Jaune’s whole thing, so 8 levels of a Solidarity Cleric will round him out.
With those class selections, Jaune has a total of 5 Ability Improvements, which means 10 ability points to spend. I’d suggest putting two points in both Strength and Charisma, bumping them up to 16, and then pouring the remaining six into Constitution for 18 there. Running the numbers that’s 16 in Strength, Charisma, and Wisdom, 18 in Constitution, and 10 and 8 for Intelligence and Dexterity. Not the best in anything, but pretty decent for whatever the party needs.
Paladins get a lot, all things told. Divine sense lets them detect fiends within sixty feet--the Grimm are pretty demonic--and Lay on Hands gives them a pool of five times their Paladin level of HP they can spend to heal a person. Divine Smite, at 12th level, deals 1d8 radiant damage, and Jaune can spend a spell slot to add 1d8+a number of dice equal to the spell slot’s value radiant damage, and gets an extra 1d8 on top of that if he’s attacking a fiend. Grimm. Seriously. Paladins also get a Fighting Style--Protection works great for a shield-bearer--the ability to make one Extra Attack per attack action, and Divine Health that makes them immune to disease. Not poison. That might not come up, but good to clarify.
All Paladins get Auras, which I’m going to clarify now: an Aura in D&D refers to an invisible field of power centered on a person, not the ‘power of the soul’ stuff going on in RWBY. As a 12 level Glory Paladin, Jaune has three Auras that give allies within ten feet of him certain perks. The Aura of Protection gives a bonus equal to his Charisma Modifer to any saving throw, the Aura of Alacrity boosts speed by 10 feet, and the Aura of Courage makes creatures immune to being Frightened. Auras apply to anyone, including their source, so Jaune is able to dodge a lot of damage and rush headfirst into the fray without breaking a sweat, and his pals get to do the same.
There’s also the ability to Channel Divinity, but Clerics have it too. In fact, because Jaune has 8 Cleric levels, he can Channel Divinity twice per short rest, and he gets five options from his Glory oath and Solidarity domain. Turn Undead lets him basically scare away undead (and outright destroy any CR 1 or below automatically). Preserve Life lets him spread up to 5 times his Cleric level HP to creatures in range (so 40 HP). Oketra’s Blessing can let him give +10 to an attack roll of somebody within 30 feet of him, which is great. Peerless Athlete gives him advantage on Athletics and Acrobatics, doubles what he can push around, and increases his jump movement by ten feet, and it lasts ten whole minutes. Inspiring Smite, triggered by his Divine Smite, lets him give 2d8+his Paladin level temporary hit points to anybody within 30 feet, spread how he likes. Have you notices I went heavy on the healing in this build?
Most of the non-spell benefits of Clerics are covered by Channel Divinity, but Solidarity Clerics do get a few unique perks. Jaune can use Solidarity’s Action to Help a person and make a weapon attack as a bonus action, an amount of times equal to his Wisdom modifier per long rest. He also gets Divine Strike, letting him add 1d8 damage to a weapon attack once per turn--and that’s on top of the Divine Smite stuff. And then... there’s the spellcasting...
So here’s the thing: Multiclass casters have a few rules. You can only get spells for each class up to the level of slots that class gives you, BUT you combine the classes to calculate what level caster you are and use that to determine the number of spell slots you actually have. With eight levels in a pure caster class (Cleric) and twelve in a half caster class (Paladin) Jaune has a total Caster level of 14, giving him slots up to level seven... but he can only learn up to level four Cleric spells and level three Paladin spells. Of course he can upcast them--spend a level seven slot to cast a level one spell--and that can increase the power of the spell quite a bit. It’s still a little odd though. Especially since a Cleric’s casting ability is Wisdom, and a Paladin’s is Charisma.
But it gets stranger. Clerics get four cantrips and prepare a number of spells equal to their cleric level plus their wisdom modifier (eleven for Jaune), and Paladins don’t get any cantrips and prepare a number of spells equal to half their level plus their charisma modifier (that’s 10). BUT! Both Oaths and Domains give auto-prepared spells at certain levels that don’t count toward the limit, so Jaune just knows eight spells from the Solidarity Domain and six from the Glory Oath. Well, technically one of the spells he gets for free is on both those lists, but that doesn’t mean he gets special abilities with Guiding Bolt, just that it’s on both those lists... the point is, Jaune has a HUMONGOUS spell list. So here it is.
Cantrips:
Guidance (Cleric) (Concentration)
Mending (Cleric)
Spare the Dying (Cleric)
Word of Radiance (Cleric)
L1 (four slots)
Bless (Solidarity Domain) (Concentration)
Compelled Duel (Paladin)
Cure Wounds (Cleric)
Guiding Bolt (Oath of Glory)
Healing Word (Cleric)
Heroism (Oath of Glory) (Concentration)
Searing Smite (Paladin) (Concentration)
Thunderous Smite (Paladin) (Concentration)
Wrathful Smite (Paladin) (Concentration)
L2 (three slots)
Aid (Solidarity Domain)
Branding Smite (Paladin) (Concentration)
Enhance Ability (Oath of Glory) (Concentration)
Gentle Repose (Cleric)
Lesser Restoration (Paladin)
Magic Weapon (Oath of Glory) (Concentration)
Prayer of Healing (Cleric)
Shield of Faith (Paladin)
Spiritual Weapon (Cleric)
Warding Bond (Solidarity Domain)
L3 (three slots)
Aura of Vitality (Paladin) (Concentration)
Beacon of Hope (Solidarity Domain) (Concentration)
Blinding Smite (Paladin) (Concentration)
Crusader's Mantle (Solidarity Domain) (Concentration)
Dispel Magic (Paladin)
Haste (Oath of Glory) (Concentration)
Life Transference (Cleric)
Mass Healing Word (Cleric)
Motivational Speech (Cleric)
Protection from Energy (Oath of Glory) (Concentration)
Revivify (Cleric)
L4 (three slots)
Aura of Life (Solidarity Domain) (Concentration)
Death Ward (Cleric)
Freedom of Movement (Cleric)
Guardian of Faith (Solidarity Domain)
2 L5 slots, 1 L6 slot, and 1 L7 slot, but no spells of those levels.
Look at that list. Look at it. Jaune has so many ways to help, heal, and boost his allies, and bonus spell slots to up that up to ridiculous levels, and then you add his non-spellcasting class features. Sure, he can only have one concentration spell up at a time, but Gosh Darn It he can keep a group plugging away at a problem for however long it takes. Respect.
So yeah, that’s Jaune.

RWBY Rarepair Week Day 2, @rwbyrarepairweek
Prompt: Stranded Together on a Mission
Pairing: Martial Arcs (Jaune/Ren)
CONTENT NOTE: hopelessness, talk of potential starvation and death
(it has a happy ending tho)
.
Fireflies in the Night
The night is quiet, peaceful.  Thankfully they haven’t attracted Grimm to their location.  Not that they wouldn’t be able to fend off attacks.  They certainly have that ability.  Neither Jaune nor Ren really want to.  They want rest.  They spend most of their days fighting now.  A peaceful night like this is a luxury.  One they are more than willing to take advantage of while they still have it.
Ren tends to the fire.  Every now and then, he pokes the rations he’s cooking in a makeshift pan with a stick.  He does his best, but even that won’t make this “food” taste good.  Earlier, he went scavenging in hopes of finding wild berries, or, if he was lucky, some non-poisonous mushrooms.  He found nothing.  This stretch of land they are stuck in is plucked dry.  Anything edible long since harvested by those who passed through before.
Ren tries not to think about the invisible, but present, clock ticking down to them running out of food.  Even if he and Jaune eat their rations sparingly, they still need to eat some to maintain their strength to fight.  Eventually, even if it is a slow, gradual, process, they will run out.  Then, they’ll starve.
“Found more firewood.”  Jaune enters their cave.  He drops a collection of small branches and bark down on the ground.  “We won’t freeze tonight.”  He offers a half-hearted smile.  Ren doesn’t share it.
“Hey, I know things suck right now, but we need to keep our spirits up, or we’ll have even worse things to—”
“I know,” Ren cuts Jaune off.  “Sorry.  I’m just tired.”  He sighs.  “It wasn’t supposed to be like this.”  Nothing was.
Jaune sits down beside him.  “Why do I get the feeling you’re not just talking about the mission?”
Now, Ren offers his own half-hearted smile.  He’d never thought that Jaune, of all people, would come to know him so well.  Yet, slowly and surely, his teammate had won over his trust, his friendship, and something Ren isn’t ready to admit quite yet.
“I wanted to become a Huntsman,” Ren starts to explain.  “To protect those in need, but I also did it for myself.  To be strong enough to have a life, and protect the people I love.”  And not lose everything.  Not again.
“You haven’t failed.”  Jaune places his hand overtop Ren’s.  Ren’s breath catches in his throat.  He doesn’t acknowledge the gesture, but he doesn’t move his hand away either.  “We’re still alive,” Jaune goes on.  “And I’d say, the two of us are pretty hard to kill.”
Ren looks into the fire.  “For how much longer?  We need more supplies.  There’s no towns around here.  Our scrolls don’t have service.  We need to be realistic about the situation.”
Realistic about the fact that they aren’t coming back.
Ren doesn’t say it.  He doesn’t need to.  Jaune already knows it too.  Nora and Pyrrha think they’re dead.  That they died in battle against that last Nevermore.  Their teammates barely made it to the rescue ship themselves.  All four of them got in over their heads, were overwhelmed by the sheer number of Grimm they’d been up against, and now there would be no rescue.
Ren and Jaune know the dangers of being Huntsmen.  They’ve known them for a long time.  They know when the odds are too low to take the risk.  They don’t hold anything against Pyrrha and Nora for not returning.  They’re happy their teammates will get to live (hopefully long, fulfilling lives).
When they first found themselves stranded (and relatively uninjured) Ren and Jaune thought they could make it.  If they just kept walking, eventually they’d hit something.  A town somewhere maybe, where they’d be able to get help.  Where they could send a message back to Beacon.  They’d assumed and they’d hoped, and now their convictions are wavering.
It had been almost two weeks.  The towns they passed were long abandoned, marked by the telltale signs of Grimm attacks, or bandits.  In the case of the latter, they’d wondered, half-hopefully, if they’d come across the responsible tribe sometime soon.  On the one hand, it was a dangerous prospect.  On the other, it would mean finally getting to see other human faces, who maybe could be convinced into helping them get home.
They had no such luck.  They are alone.
“Come on.”  Jaune stands.  He holds out a hand to Ren.  “I found something earlier that I think you’ll want to see.”
Jaune leads Ren out of their cave.  They cover its entrance behind them, careful not to let any of the fire’s light shine through.  As quietly as they can, they walk along the cliff line.  Ren glances at the sky, but dawn remains a couple hours off.  He hopes Jaune isn’t leading him too far away.  They don’t want to draw any unwanted attention in the dark.
They reach a crevice in the cliff face.  Jaune glances back at Ren, and then shimmies through.  Ren hesitates, and then follows through to a cavern.
At first, there’s darkness.  Nothing.  But, as Ren’s eyes adjust, he begins to see.  Lights.  Small, green, flickering ones.  Bioluminescent bugs.  Not quite fireflies, but a close relation to them.
Ren lifts up his hand, as unconscious choice as he observes the insects.  He’s always found wonder in nature.  One of the lightning bugs lands on his index finger.  He feels its legs move as it crawls along to the palm of his hand.  He watches as it flutters its wings, and then takes off again.
“I know they don’t solve anything,” Jaune says.  “I just thought you’d like them.”  He makes eye contact with Ren.  “Since they are beautiful.”
“That they are.”  Ren meets Jaunes gaze.  “Thank you.”
They sit side by side on the cavern floor, lean back on the palms of their hands, and look up to watch the bugs fly about.  For a moment, it’s as if nothing else—their hunger, their worry, their fear—matters.  They can relax.
Ren reaches out and finds Jaune’s hand with his own.  He grasps it tightly, before interlocking his fingers with his partner’s.  Jaune smiles at him, a special sort of smile he shares with no one else, but doesn’t say anything.
Neither of them have to speak to know what the other is thinking.  Not in this instance.
Being stranded is a situation neither enjoys, but they’re both glad that, since they are there, they’re there with the other.
Eventually, Ren and Jaune return to their own cave.  They decide to sleep in close proximity, for warmth and for affection.
The next morning, when they walk outside with their hands interlocked, there’s a search and rescue airship on the horizon.

RWBY Volume 7 Chapter 7 Rundown
This episode was not as stressful and tense as the last... it was just kinda depressing. But I felt better at the end of the chapter than I did at the beginning, which is a good thing.
Much like how last episode started with the aftermath of the rioting over SDC layoffs, this begins with the Grimm attack following Jacques’ election and Tyrian’s killing spree being pretty much over. I had expected it to be a much bigger deal, honestly. But shows what I know. The worst Mantle has ever seen is yet to come.
It starts with somber music on a somber scene: Penny sitting sadly and in deep self doubt back in her father’s Altas lab as she gets a small sign of reassurance and comfort, that being a mechanized arm probably used mostly for maintenance patting her on the head. Other than that, she’s all alone and she definitely feels it.
Ironwood is now in full paranoia mode and has enforced a curfew for everyone in Mantle. No one is allowed to be out at night without good reason, and no one may gather in assembly for any reason. It’s incredibly restricting, but it’s all he can think to do to keep people from grouping up in any place they might get attacked again. At least, that’s the only logic I could think to gather from it. As airships patrol overhead, we see that the thirsty mom who gave Jaune the casserole two episodes ago is still alive with her child, though still very much afraid. Unfortunately... they were some of the lucky ones. We see two of the little kids Jaune helped cross the street hiding from Atlas soldiers behind a dumpster. I can only assume it was their mothers who were slain by Tyrian, and now they may go hungry on the streets or maybe don’t know how to get home. It’s incredibly depressing and upsetting...
Two people walking the streets are chased by soldiers just for being out late, and a newscast says that despite a public statement about the killer footage of Penny being faked people still think she’s a danger to society and should be shut down. With the rush of a truck in front of our view, we cut to a thrilling scene that lifts our spirits a little. As a supply van, the same sort we saw Ruby, Marrow, Qrow and Penny riding in a few episodes back, drives through the city we see some figures giving chase from the roofs. Familiar figures. Then another welcome face stands in from of the truck and makes it stop. It’s the new FNDM favorite, May Marigold!!! When the robot drivers tell her to step aside, that gets the attention of patrolling soldiers down the block. When they round the corner... there’s nothing there. Not even the truck! Turns out it was May whose Semblance was keeping her and Joanna invisible when they approached the other truck in their first appearance. And even more good news, dear Fiona has made a full recovery! And it turns out her Semblance is really amazing. She just places a hand on the van and the entire thing dissolves into dust as if being sucked into her palm. How exactly it works we don’t know, but it reminds me of Blackbeard from One Piece and his ability to create black holes to absorb anything he touches and save it for later. In this instance it’s a very useful way to take all the contents of the truck without taking up much room.
Unfortunately it’s also really bad news for Ironwood because now Robyn is officially breaking the law and adding even more trouble to the situation of Penny being framed for a massacre and Jacques getting a position of governmental power. And Winter prompts even worse news out of him. Because of Robyn’s new habit of hitting up supply trucks to redistribute the materials to where the city most needs them, the Mantle suppliers have gotten bold are refusing to supply until conditions improve. So there will be no more deliveries to the Amity Project, no more progress. It’s been stalled completely, so close to the finish line. Nobody likes that. The only solution Winter offers is an even worse prospect though: declaring martial law to make every business obey military demands. And much to Nora’s quite vocal dismay, Ironwood is willing to take that path. He sees the big picture first and foremost and it’s blinded him to how important it is to address how awful the problems are here and now. Global communication? Or keeping their equivalent of a ghetto in good enough shape that the people can sleep safely at night and stop complaining to him? He said before he doesn’t care about his public image being ruined, but if this is what it means to ignore the defamation and bad press then maybe he should?
Nora is having NONE of his bullshit. He’s trivializing the lives and safety of hundreds of people. Saying they have to wait a little longer for things to start getting better is easy to say from the tallest and safest building, in the richest Kingdom ON THE ENTIRE PLANET!!! He doesn’t have to hide in the dark wet streets unsure of where the next safe place to sleep or thing to eat will come from, not knowing if he will be found and eaten by Grimm or arrested by the military just because he wasn’t where they want him to be. He doesn’t know what it’s like to be the little guy. Nora, we can mostly certainly have guessed by the condition she was in when she met Ren, has. Ironwood claims everyone has had to struggle in these recent times, but he refuses to admit he’s making Mantle bear all of the burden because that’s the easiest path for him with the least direct resistance. Ignoring their pain and keeping on with this game of patience is only making it worse on them, and sending more men to bully and order around more people will only create despair and strife, and they all know damn well that will just be trading the current problems for more Grimm than even they can handle. It’s a staredown, and ultimately Ironwood backs down and takes a seat to contemplate. Ruby is on Nora’s side, this treatment of Mantle isn’t right and is only going to make ripping the peace apart easier for Salem. This is exactly what Tyrian is here to cause.
Which brings up an interesting moment. Clover says the only reason Ren, Nora and Ruby are here is to confirm without a doubt that they saw who they say they did. He pulls up a visual of what’s essentially Tyrian’s rap sheet, and Winter explains that he was one of the worst killers Anima had ever seen who disappeared after he was caught and then let free by a Grimm attack on his prison transport. The info page itself tells a pretty eerie story of his past. The arrest was aided by a huntsman with the last name Pickerel, who insisted there should be more guards for the transport to the point he had to be removed from the mission for obstructing the process. A pickerel is a type of poisonous frog, and Tyrian’s inspiration is said to be the fable of the scorpion who asks a frog to carry him across a river on his back. The frog doesn’t want to for fear he will be stung, but the scorpion assures him he would not because it would only lead to him drowning as well. Yet the scorpion stings the frog anyway, for it is just in his nature to do so, he can’t help it. Poetic, especially since after Tyrian’s escape Pickerel is found dead in his home. Despite Grimm activity in the area of the transport route being minimal shortly before, a distress call came from the pilot that a swarm of Grimm came for the ship as Tyrian was in transit. Despite the ship being split in two within 6 minutes and some people whose names seem to be redacted from the record presumably dying, that same pilot named Cornetto continued to talk over the transmission. And a lot of that was just “What are you?!?!” before he too was killed. The last thing anyone heard from the scene was Tyrian himself seeing his unholy savior Salem for the first time and weeping at her beauty. Quite telling of why he worships her so much.
Ruby and Qrow agree that this is proof he’s here as Salem’s agent to start chaos before a major attack; Atlas is definitely her next target. Unfortunately, Ruby’s hopes that the public can be warned about this dangerous suspect and know who to watch out for instead of Penny are dashed by Clover. No one is gonna like the news that a long lost serial killer is in their streets, it’ll only make things worse so this has to be secret too. Nora? Well she hates that too, she hates ALL the secrets Ironwood is making them keep. Cooperation and appeasing tensions would be so much easier if they could tell people who the enemy is, what Atlas is actually doing to help. But that makes the General the Big Angry. Any info getting out is a disaster in the making. Telling people about the Amity satellite means more opportunity for the enemy to sabotage it, and telling people about Salem means people are going to freak the fuck out sooner than the good guys will be ready for. So secret it must stay and complete the tower must be, though hindsight is kicking us all in the ass because a few words said way sooner would have gone a long way to making the situation better. For now, the General implements a strategy the likes of which haven’t been seen since Kyle Rayner in Infinite Crisis! Arrest Robyn Hill and make her cut a deal so the supplies can start running and the tower can be finished. As you would expect, Nora and Ruby don’t like that plan. But Daddy Ironwood don’t care, he’s on a roll here. Priority #1 is Robyn and anyone not on that case needs to find Tyrian and his accomplice to figure out what their plan is and how they’ve gotten this far. And in full totalitarian leader mode he calls Mantle/Atlas HIS Kingdom. Winter and Clover are of course obediently agreeing, but surprisingly so is Ren.  But it’s not hard to understand why. His village was destroyed by a Grimm that there was a possibility might have been defeated if there was a Huntsman or two there, so of course he has respect for the established power he wishes could have been there in his time of need. Inversely, Nora has very likely been a street urchin in the big cities and seen how poorly they treat the common man so she holds a grudge and wants them to make changes for the better. It’s fascinating character juxtaposition that may very well drive another wedge between them...
But that’s a problem for another time. Now we have the Bees in the back of a truck for one of my favorite scenes this episode, nay this Volume. They’re part of the effort to bring in Robyn, being in a decoy truck while most of the Ace Ops are implied to be in other trucks so they can cast a wide net and no matter which one Robyn decides to ambush she will be met only with opposition. Once a truck gets stopped the others will be alerted and come running as backup, but until then it’s radio silence. And in that quiet comes some time to talk. After all this escalation of force Yang wants to know if Blake thinks they should have told Ironwood the whole truth about Salem and Oz earlier on. Blake can tell that’s what Yang thinks should have happened, and the blonde clarifies that even if she does have faith in her sister she still believes the General deserves to know just like they deserved to. Blake has reason to disagree, since Ironwood’s behavior even without that knowledge shows a paranoia and habit of overreaction that could have been exacerbated by such catastrophic news. He didn’t have many good options to work with, to be fair, but those are in short supply for all of them these days anyway. And these two have had to make more of those choices than most recently, not just the secrets but also killing. Yes, after 7 episodes it’s time for these two to actually talk about killing Adam. Because you don’t just do that without repercussions, without feeling some guilt and remorse. But Yang says it plainly: that was the only option they had in that moment. It was what they had to do. They can feel remorse and guilt about killing, but it was in self defense against an evil person who intended to murder them. Still makes the both of them wonder how far down this path they’ll have to go to keep doing “the right thing”. And one thing is for certain, even if it was what they had to do in that moment Blake wants to make sure they never find themselves in a place where they have to again.
My mind wanders back to the Adam character short between Volumes 5 and 6. When Blake voiced her concerns and apprehension about what they were doing to Adam and said she wanted to stop hurting people, he chastised and belittled her for not having the strength to do what he insisted they had to. He gaslit her into thinking she was weak and cowardly, that she was an insult to the White Fang like her parents and her way of thinking was invalid. He wanted her to be unwaveringly obedient to him and not think for herself. In stark contrast, when Blake says she doesn’t feel right ambushing a Huntress trying to do good for Mantle... Yang agrees. She admits that’s a valid way to feel and that they don’t have to go through with what they were told if it’s going to make Blake uncomfortable. It’s differences like this, not explicitly stated but evident if you’ve been paying attention all this time, that show how much better a partner Yang is for Blake, romantic or otherwise.
The scene shifts once again to Pietro’s lab where Penny seems to be in a charging stand of some kind while they analyze her personal footage to prove she didn’t kill anyone at the party. Ruby and Weiss are there with them, as is Maria!! Our chaos grandma makes her return after 6 episodes of absence!! Ruby wants to make sure Penny is gonna be okay after how traumatizing being framed must have been, and Pietro assures that she likely will, she’s just scared about how wrong things have gone and how she’s hated and feared now. They can prove her innocence, surely, but they can’t just take away the fear and doubt that are in people’s hearts now. In that sense, Watts has won so far. And that upsets Pietro a lot, since Robyn would be dead if Penny hadn’t been there to try and help. But Ruby sees the truth here, Robyn was never in any real danger. Salem just wanted people to think she was and that Penny was to blame so further division and distrust could be sewn in Atlas and Mistral. Penny stepping in was exactly what they wanted, just as many others had been in Vale two years ago (their time, as best as I can guess). Pietro points out that the similarities don’t run there, since Atlas tech is once again working to the enemy’s advantage since the footage everyone is in a tizzy over uses imagery from all the hero work she did in Mantle so it would take a tech genius with a watchful eye to gather what they would need for this deep fake.
Maria gives a point of levity we were all subconsciously thinking and says she misses the days when people just fought to the death face to face. Thank you for that. Pietro admits the Mantle security system is chump change for the kind of hacker they saw the work of at the Fall of Beacon, but Atlas got the better network protection. And a million IRL I.T. people screamed in frustration that they left the ghetto city with outdated security that could undeniably and inevitably lead to their downfall. Weiss asks the important question, how WOULD someone get access to the Atlas Network? Fortunately, only few people have that clearance: Ironwood and other Council members, the leads of surveilance and cybersecurity, and the overseers of critical city systems like sewage and the heating grid. And there’s where the ball drops: Weiss reveals the heating grid is run in partnership with the Schnee Dust Company. Suddenly everything Watts has been doing becomes much more clear. He wouldn’t have helped Jacques win the election for free, so clearly he asked the SchneeEO for access to the heating grid in exchange, and now that’s his in to mess with the security of Atlas as a whole. And we see what he does with that next episode...
But for now, the heroes don’t know as much as us so for now they’re just a little suspicious. Ruby already knows about Penny so now she asks how Pietro himself is doing, and he admits the stress of both building the tower and worrying about people wanting to hurt Penny would have broken him down if Maria hadn’t been helping him. But we see there are still cracks in his composure as he starts tearing up just looking at her. My heartstrings are tugged every time I see the emotion on this poor man’s face. Ruby tries to reassure him that even if the worst does happen to Penny he can always rebuild her like he did after Beacon... but she doesn’t know the whole story. Penny is one of a kind for a very good reason. And so we get her backstory.
Ironwood initially challenged a team of Atlas’s best and brightest to come up with the next breakthrough in defensive technology, and Pietro was the most creative and introspective with his idea. A protector with all the might of Atlesian innovation, but the indomitable soul of a human. Apparently very few thought the same way he did, but the General believed in the project and so it was chosen. It’s likely that many of the other scientists who had pitched their concepts were transferred to help make Penny whether they believed it could work or not. From the photograph Pietro is holding as he recounts this tale, that includes a certain disgraced Atlesian with a fabulous mustache. We now have a plausible motive for his betrayal and defecting to Salem’s side. Considering his skills being computer hacking and enough cybernetic knowhow to build Tyrian’s tail, he may have had a plan for something akin to Skynet or Dr. Gero’s Androids but his idea got tossed aside for something he felt was ridiculous and beneath him. It does still give him enough experience with the development to know how to hack Penny however, and that does concern me a good deal. What worries me even more is what we learn about how exactly Pietro got the Penny Project to succeed. Everyone thinks he managed to create an artificial Aura for her, but that’s not really accurate... He actually gave her a portion of his own, leaving himself that much weaker. He’s had to do this both times he built her, and he doesn’t have enough life left in him to survive a third time. People complained there were no stakes or risk with Penny if she could be so easily rebuilt without consequence, but that all goes right out the window here. If she gets destroyed again, it will either be permanent or mean Pietro will die for her. Because look at that man. You know he would do it. And we really don’t want him to... As Ruby promises they will find the one responsible for all this trouble we get the “dramatic reveal” that Pietro’s thumb had been covering Watts’ face in the photo... but we had guessed it already.
Scene shift again right back to the streets of Mantle as the Happy Huntresses are striking again at another truck, which as luck would have it is the one with Blake and Yang. Robyn opens the back doors to see the Bees raising their hands in surrender, but she panics and runs anyway, telling the rest of her squad to scatter and regroup back at base. The girls chase Robyn into an alley where there is a very cool shot I can best describe as panning up from the pavement to dolly zoom in on Robyn as she checks over her shoulder. Blake tries to trip her up and then has to dodge bolts from the crossbow on the older woman’s wrist, all the while trying to explain that they just want to talk. But Robyn doesn’t stop to listen, she just slashes with her weapon’s razor sharp sawblade of feathers. Very versatile and transforming weapon there, Miss Hill. Blake uses a fire powered shadow clone to dodge, and Yang strikes from above and tries shooting at Robyn as well. But the feathers make a good shield too, as she further demonstrates when both huntresses start attacking up close and she fends them off pretty well. It takes the Bumblebee technique (yes, I’m sticking to the name, it works well and it’s canon) to send Robyn flying back a bit into a more open area with a kick from the airborne Blake. Robyn tries to intimidate the pair by saying they won’t be enough to take her in to Ironwood, and they openly admit they aren’t the only ones looking for her and their backup will be on their way since the truck got stopped. So they need to talk NOW, because she needs to hear this. She thinks it’s just a stalling tactic, but Blake presses on and reveals the plans for the satellite and the Tower... and Robyn is in disbelief. Yang tries to explain what that would mean, but that’s not what Robyn is so hung up on. So we get another reveal that’s been hinted at for an episode or two, her Semblance. Blake is told to take her hand and answer the question again. And with a green glow of the Aura flowing between them, we see Robyn is a human lie detector. The confirmation of the Tower being Ironwood’s secret project only confuses Robyn more, because surely he could just tell people that’s the plan and there would be no argument it should be done. Blake tells her the people framing Atlas for all the wrongdoing could cause a lot more harm if they knew the Tower was being worked on, but they won’t tell Robyn who those people are yet. She almost calls bullshit on that, but we can’t have swears in this show so Harriet radios Yang to check on her and Blake and Yang cuts the conversation short and says Robyn needs to trust them that the Amity project must stay secret since they trusted her enough to tell her this info. Blake runs off to distract the nearby soldiers long enough for Robyn to get away while Yang lingers to make sure she agrees to their terms. Reluctantly the politician turned vigilante does, but she says she’s still determined to learn the full truth. That strikes a deep chord with Yang since she had that same drive to seek answers from Raven for so long... and now she’s keeping the secret that Raven is the Spring Maiden.
For our final scene we shift to a First Civilization vault from Assassin’s Creed... I mean the Atlas Vault for the Relic of Creation!! Sorry, they look very similar. Ironwood is down there with Oscar explaining that he had hoped seeing this place would jog some of Ozpin’s memories within the lad. Plot twist, the Staff is what’s keeping Atlas floating in the sky, an idea originally pitched by Ozpin. The public story is that it’s Gravity Dust doing that job, but the Staff is a constant seemingly limitless energy source that could in theory lift Atlas higher than they could imagine. And that’s where Ironwood got the idea for doing that to Amity. But they have to use Gravity Dust for that, since the Staff can only do one job at a time. And the sky grows much darker from that sudden foreshadowing... Someone is definitely going to move the Staff or use it for some other purpose, and Atlas is going to fall... Oscar gets a surreal feeling from seeing something so complex that his past incarnation built, but Ironwood assures him that he will soon acclimate to the assimilation... real smooth there Jimmy. Ironwood admits he wishes he could get Ozpin’s advice in a time like this, and since he can’t give that Oscar offers his own opinion. The way Ironwood is handling this, trusting only himself, is only going to hurt him. The General asserts that nothing matters more right now than beating Salem, but Oscar has a counterpoint. Keeping their humanity matters, because it keeps them from becoming like Salem. Ironwood worries that’s Salem’s advantage though, lacking humanity means she’s willing to sacrifice more to achieve her goals and that may end up winning her the war. She may not feel fear or hesitation anymore, while her attack on Beacon brought both those debilitating emotions out of Ironwood as he helplessly watched his robots hurt people and was taunted by her calling card of the Black Queen virus being on all the computer screens. As the elevator comes to bring them up out of the vault, Oscar encourages the General that fear is normal but they shouldn’t let it control them. Ironwood doesn’t want to become like Lionheart, and wants to know if Oscar believes in him. Oscar has the only good answer to a question like that, that he believes in multiple people INCLUDING the General. The best thing Ironwood can do is talk it out with the people he’s afraid of, so he can learn to relax and let others in. But be careful what you wish for, because Winter is waiting up top for them with a letter. Jacques has invited them to a dinner party at Schnee Manor where Ironwood will have to go before the Council and defend his position. Sounds like an excuse to see our heroes back in fancy dress and meet Mama Schnee...

Now im curious what the Nine New Witches (+Hannah and Barbara) would be like in the Rwby-verse. Would you like to share your thoughts?
Okay but this is gonna be a long one. So put on your seatbelts ‘cause we’re going on a ride!
Also for the sake of simplicity, we’re gonna assume that Luna Nova is a Huntsmen school for girls located somewhere between Mistral and Vale. It’s less well-known than the other 4 schools, but it’s also the oldest among them. Plus, teams are made of 3 people instead of 4, with 2 teams being under the guidance of one professor at any given time. Finally, ignoring the color name rule because I don’t have the patience nor skills to come up with a color name.
So yeah, let’s begin!
Akko Kagari (Red Team) >> A young girl from Mistral, Akko grew up in fairly normal life and trained to be the first Huntsman in her family. This is because she watched the Vytal Tournament many years ago and was enamoured by Chariot’s combat performance. Thus, she applied to a combat school and later on, to Luna Nova Academy. Akko fights using Chariot’s weapon, a large staff known as the Shiny Rod that transforms into a bow, which she found in the woods during a stroll. She fixed it up and was surprised by how complex it was, motivating her to study engineering and mecha-shift weaponry design. Despite that, she never built her own weapon, continuing to use Chariot’s Shiny Rod and figuring out how it works. Due to that, her close-ranged combat is subpar at best and thus fights by shooting arrows powered by her Aura at opponents. Akko’s Semblance “Luck” is the opposite of Qrow’s, in the sense that it makes her incredibly lucky. She has no control over it however and on rare occasions, her luckiness would cause other people to become unlucky. She is however extremely clumsy, which is something her Semblance doesn’t stop.
Diana Cavendish (Blue Team) >> Diana is from one of the most influential noble households in Vale, the Cavendish. While the Schnees hold a monopoly on Dust in Atlas, the Cavendish has a smaller one in Vale. Unlike the Schnees however, every Cavendish is a trained Huntsman and so will Diana. The Cavendish had always sent their own to Luna Nova Academy as well and Diana looked forward to it ever since she watched Chariot’s performance at the Vytal Tournament. She did not attend combat school however but instead had private tutors, leaving her to be very lonely with only a few friends. She’s trained in the art of Dust weaving and uses a gladius called Bernadette as a weapon, which can extend as a whipblade and can be lined with various elemental Dust, and her fighting style involves using the Dust on her weapons and weaving them into projectiles that she launches at targets. Her Semblance “G-Point” enables her to create small gravitational points in space that attracts nearby objects. The force itself is not strong enough to physically harm someone but she can send objects flying or cause people to stagger.
Amanda O’Neill (Green Team) >> Amanda grew up in the outskirts of Vale as part of a family of Huntsmen. She craves for adventure and was against going to Luna Nova Academy, preferring to study at Shade Academy instead. Unfortunately, she had no choice on the matter and is thus left quite angrily. Despite that, she’s pretty close to her team but would often get them in trouble for her antics. Amanda fights with a glaive known as Lionel and her style consists of aggressively attacking her opponent and jumping away from an attack, using her glaive similar to pole vaulting. This makes her the most mobile of all Huntsmen listed and a true monster on the battlefield. Her Semblance “Automatic Response” causes her senses and reflexes to go on overdrive, enabling her to dodge attacks in split-seconds and counter just as fast. Using this Semblance makes her almost invincible in combat but it does, however, put a strain on her body when using it for long periods of time.
Sucy Manbavaran (Red Team) >> A wolf Faunus from the Menagerie, she lived in an orphanage her entire life and trained as a Huntsman as a way to leave the island. She has a knack for Dust and is extremely proficient in handling chemicals for either medicinal use or as poisons. Despite that, her skills are a bit unorthodox as she was self-taught. Being a Faunus also helped her, as her stronger senses enable her to determine chemicals better. Sucy’s weapons consist of many throwing knives called Dadanhayan, hidden all over her clothes. These knives are lined with different types of Dust that can cause a variety of elemental effects. After the battle, she would collect the knives and repair them. She also carries small smoke pellets and bandages that she sometimes uses as weapons. Due to her choice of weaponry, Sucy never fights directly and instead would either dodge attacks or redirect them with martial arts. Her Semblance “Sucyworld” creates a large invisible space around her that makes anyone in it suffer from nausea, vertigo and dizziness. The closer a person is to her, the stronger the effects. Her own moves however become sluggish as her Semblance requires focus to use.
I’m stopping here for a bit because writing this was a lot harder than expected. I’ll continue with it later, adding the other characters.

RWBY is about abandonment
The act of dying is not the act of abandoning anyone, but it can sure feel that way.  I’m not a huge fan of Harry Potter, but I do like the core concept a lot: It’s essentially the story of a boy named Harry Potter whose parents are dead, and much of the series tries to convince the reader that they never abandoned him even though they’re gone.  Red Like Roses, Pt II is a song that arguably tells the story of Ruby’s family better than she can: The death of a mother weighs heavily.  They touched on this a bit in season two and never really fleshed it out, but that’s because the series has other death to deal with.
When the season four intro came out, one of the top comments was about the literal gap in Jaune’s team.  They stand a little apart, almost as if they still expect Pyrrha to be filling in that invisible gap.  Why is Jaune a convincing character?  Because he has real flaws, noticeable gaps, and genuine talents.  Things were finally looking up when he established a relationship with his own foil, and the two built off of each other.  That was really great, and both characters needed that.  It’s nice to know that things ended up so well for the two of them.
In all seriousness, though, loss and abandonment are two themes that run through the entire series.  The silver lining is that characters come closer together.  Yang and Ruby have a close bond; even Weiss and Winter have a connection worth exploring, one that never would have developed if they didn’t have similar abilities.  On the other side of the spectrum is Qrow who, like many real people, feels that he is poison and struggles to establish the kinds of close, warm relationships other characters in the series have.
In one of his videos, Exurb1a describes a writing concept called scarcity.  I was surprised to find that it wasn’t a common thing--I think he made it up as an umbrella term for lots of things.  Don’t tell the audience all the information you have immediately; leave mystery.  Don’t give characters too many abilities at their disposal so that victory seems unearned.  Be careful with providing too much of anything.
The issue I had with season one is that many of the characters, besides Jaune, were really powerful right out of the gate and didn’t have something that seemed to pose a sufficient physical or emotional threat.  Season three, as dark as it was, established some very memorable plot points by eliminating or damaging key characters who held much of the structure together.  It was devastating, but it was effective.
What are we going to see now?  Are the old wounds healed and are characters going to come back together again, or is it going to be explosive?
Let’s find out.

Pyrrha Nikos, one of the most beloved and bemoaned characters in RWBY. A motivation for any character, really. And now I’m going to Dungeoneer her. Yay.
For this build, we obviously have to have to give Pyrrha skills with a lot of weapons and also shields. We also need to figure out how her semblance can fit into the game. And it would be nice if we could capture that Pyrrhic Charm somehow...
In the array of points, Strength comes first at 15, followed by Dexterity at 14--both very important abilities for fighting. After that is 13 points in Charisma, Pyrrha’s a well-liked celebrity, and 12 in Constitution because, well, she’s endured a lot in fights. Intelligence has 10 points, because she’s a good student but not a genius, and that leaves Wisdom at 8. Look, Pyrrha’s first attempt at advising Jaune backfired, her second attempt was good advice that failed to recognize Weiss’s feelings (and ignored her own), and when she sought advice from him she wasn’t able to express the issue properly. Also she made a few really, really poor choices near the end there...
Variant Humans get two Ability points (up Strength and Dexterity) a free skill (let’s say Religion, because Pyrrha loves her fairy tales) and a free feat. Pyrrha’s going to need a lot of feats, but for the moment I’m going with Shield Master; she can take a bonus action after an attack action to shove a creature next to her, add her shield bonus to Dexterity saves targeting only her, and if the Dexterity save is a ‘roll for half damage’ kind of thing she can take no damage on a success.
For Background, there’s not really a difference between Entertainer and Gladiator. Both get proficiencies with Acrobatics, Performance, Disguise Kits, one kind of Instrument, and of course the By Popular Demand feature that lets Pyrrha perform for lodgings. I... guess she can tell everyone epic stories? And hold autograph sessions with the kiddies? She’s a celebrity, this is the celebrity feature, just accept it.
And now for class... IT’S PURE FIGHTER! Twenty levels of Fighter, specifically Psi Knight fighter, for all your fighting needs. Fighters get proficiencies in all weapons and armors (which does include shields), Strength and Constitution saving throws, and two skills; Athletics and Perception are what we’re going with here, because Pyrrha is a powerhouse.
Now ordinarily I’d save Ability Score Improvements for last, buuut we should probably talk about them now. All classes get an ability score improvement at fourth, eighth, twelfth, sixteenth, and nineteenth levels. Fighters, though, get two more ability score improvements--at sixth and fourteenth level, respectively. And each improvement can either give two ability score points to spend or be burned for a feat. We’ll be burning three of them, picking up Sharpshooter, Telekinetic, and Practiced Expert, which leaves us eight points to spend--putting four in Strength and four in Dexterity caps one and brings the other closer to cap.
The Sharpshooter feat means Pyrrha can shoot at long range without imposing disadvantage, ignore all but total cover when shooting, and choose to take a -5 penalty on her attack roll to deal an extra 10 damage. Telekenetic lets her up her Charisma by one, evening it out, and also lets her cast the Mage Hand cantrip invisibly without needing any components, so she can grab her weapons at a distance. Also she can shove people away from a distance. And Practiced Expert gives her an ability point (cap out Dexterity), a free skill (let’s take Persuasion!) and Expertise in one skill she knows (I’m going to saaaaay Athletics).
With twenty levels of Fighter Pyrrha gets a lot of benefits. Firstly she gets to pick a Fighting Style, and Interception works well for her--so long as she’s wielding a shield or a weapon she can reduce the damage of an attack on somebody next to her by 1d10+6 as a reaction. She can also use her Second Wind to regain 1d10+20 HP as a bonus action once per rest. She gets two Action Surges per rest, each of which can give her an extra Action on a turn (but not on the same turn), three uses of Indomitable per long rest, each of which let her reroll one failed saving throw, and Extra Attack means whenever she takes the Attack action she can make four attacks.
Psi Knights get Psi-Enhanced Metabolism, giving them resistance to poison and psychic damage and immunity to the poison condition. They also get a Psionic Talent die, and Pyrrha’s maxed hers out to a d12. The thing about the Psi Die is that it can shrink and grow, going down to a d10 then a d8 then a d6 then a d4 and then, quite possibly, popping out of existence. The Psi Die shrinks if it achieves the maximum number on its current size, but it grows a level if it rolls a one. It resets to a d12 after a long rest, though, and once per long rest Pyrrha can reset it manually, so it’s not too terrible a weakness for her.
There’s a lot of ways for Pyrrha to use her Psi Die. She can make a Protective Field as a reaction when somebody within 30 feet of her takes damage, reducing it by her Psi Die roll. Psi-Powered leap lets her extend her jump distance by twice her Psi Die roll. Telekenetic Strike lets her add her Psi Die roll to the damage of one attack per turn. Psionic Thrust enhances a Telekenetic strike, making the target who fails a Strength Saving throw either be knocked prone or moved around 10 feet.
There’s also options that just automatically shrink Pyrrha’s Psi Die. Bulwark of Force lets her give one creature half cover for a minute, and she can use it once per long rest for free before having to shrink her Psi Die to pay for it. Telekenetic Movement is a brief action that lets her move things within thirty feet of her up to thirty feet, at the cost of shrinking her Psi Die. Then there’s Telekenetic Master, which lets her cast the Telekinesis spell without needing any components; this is different from Telekenetic Movement in that it can last ten minutes, depending on concentration, it’s capable of more delicate precision, and it has a bigger size cap, but it does require Pyrrha shrink her Psi die by one level.
Pyrrha has a lot of options for moving things around, though. The Telekinetic feat lets her grab small weapons and shove people without needing to shrink her Psi Die, Telekinetic Movement means she can actually pick up heavy things and smash them around, and Telekenetic Master lets her not only pick up heavier things for longer but also subtly manipulate the environment, maybe moving somebody’s shield juuuuust where it needs to be. Everything else enhances her combat ability to an utterly insane degree--she is the four-time Mistral Champion after all.
So yeah, that’s Pyrrha.
