thinking about doing a month-long event for the homestuck tumblr community to encourage people to make + post fanworks as well as reblog other people's fanworks.... where people can opt-in by being randomly assigned one of two teams (probably red and blue) so that each team has roughly the same amount of members. teams get points for making fanworks and having their posts reblogged, which encourages people to make posts and also reblog the posts made by their team members. and the top 3 people in each team to get the most points get some kind of reward... hmmmm

#if you have thoughts please let me know!!!#just trying to think of ways to encourage sharing fanworks and getting feedback through friendly competition #sort of like artfight but not the same attacking/revenge format. just the same basic idea in mind of encouraging this kind of creativity #for the reblogging to get points i don't think duplicate reblogs would count. to limit spam #but you can reblog multiple times... it just won't get you more points #i don't want it to be too complicated though #i also don't want it to end up limiting reblogs since the other team wouldn't want to reblog...................#this is like very very loose brainstorming here #i'm leaning toward this concept because it encourages people to engage with posts they might normally skip over #like if you don't really care about PM. but if someone posts their PM fanart you might reblog it anyways because they're on your team!#homestuck

when y'all stop perpetuating stigmas and demonisations of certain mental disorders you deem 'scary' and 'problematic', we can actually start having a conversation about it.

self-absorbed people aren't immediately 'narcissistic'. stop using it as an insult to or even descriptor of every person you feel is being particularly selfish or conceited. NPD is a serious disorder and should be treated as such. stop demonising it.

and also, abusers who use the tactics of putting others down, making everything about them, etc. are extremely self-absorbed and could be anyone. stop making it look like it's just people with NPD, who themselves are abuse victims... often of that exact abuse you accuse them of. same goes for BPD and emotional abuse/using emotions and outbursts as abuse tactics...

generally start treating people with a cluster B personality disorder like the human beings they are, deserving of respect and kindness, just like everybody else.

stop throwing around the word 'psychotic' when you're really just trying to say somebody is 'evil' or 'deranged'. psychosis is a very serious symptom of extremely demonised disorders, like schizophrenia. people with it are just as deserving of respect and kindness as every other human being is.

low/no empathy doesn't make you a bad person. not having compassion doesn't make you a bad person. it's okay for people to not have those traits. they aren't 'monsters' for it. nor are they undeserving of your love and compassion for it, either.

in order to have a nuanced and helpful conversation about stigmas of mental disorders, you need to understand your own partaking in them and unlearn those words, behaviours and thought patterns. please.

I have just finished Chapter 10 of Northanger Abbey. Some thoughts:

I kind of wish I had read this book first out of Jane Austen’s works, if only because I would have related to Catherine more

since I’m mostly familiar with Pride and Prejudice and Emma and Persuasion, and a little knowledgeable of Sense and Sensibility, (I have yet to even touch Mansfield yet, I am so sorry) I was immediately like what the heck do you mean Catherine’s got a brother

who is this man?? what is he doing here???

I’ve read too many P&P fics,,, the state of being brotherless is just so ingrained into the story conflicts and character dynamics in my head, whoops

Mr Thorpe was annoying from the first, and he has only gotten on my nerves even more (and do I smell a fortune hunter??)

Isabella is also hmm

at first I was leery of her and Catherine’s friendship because of how she’s older and more polished; I was sceptical of the sincerity of how quickly they seemed to get attached

also I get the vibe that she’s hiding something from Catherine (has she met Tilney before…?)

but if she’s really James’s love interest, then I see her as more harmless; more of a disappointment, less of a threat, I guess?

still absolutely relieved Catherine’s not overly attached to her now though

Miss Tilney intrigues me

I like her so far

might be my favourite character but we’ll see we’ll see

Mr Tilney also intrigues me but less decisively of a favourable bent

I’m kinda suspicious but idrk why

tryna withhold judgement since he hasn’t actually done anything sus yet (that I can think of)

plus I genuinely enjoy his and Catherine’s tête-à-têtes

so mostly on the fence

I am most curious about General Tilney, idk why but he is piquing my interest

the exposition about the late Mrs Tilney seems very deliberate

the whole family is just intriguing I s’pose ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

loving the writing, unsurprisingly

I put off Northanger for a long time because I hadn’t expected it to be as lighthearted as it is due to some reviews I’d read but

there do be plenty of funny parts

and of course Miss Austen’s characteristic wit is ubiquitous <3

a quick hot guide for people that struggle commenting on fics aka things authors love to hear and youre just over thinking it and its actually really simple to leave comments on stuff!!

key smash/emoji spam/reaction image/etc (it conveys emotions way more than you might think)

drop a line you really liked

say how much you love a ship/character and how happy you are that theres content about them

ALL CAPS ANYTHING

"i liked/loved/enjoyed/whatever it!" its better to say the most basic thing than saying nothing tbh; writers appreciate hearing anything over nothing 💜

"thank you for writing this" its short, sweet, and very powerful

think what kind of feedback you'd personally like to receive on a piece of art you made. try to translate that want into comments you leave for other people too

you dont have to be critical or constructive or anything, even if the author asks for that stuff in their notes. they'll get it from someone else, you just do you

i feel like people make leaving comments too hard on themselves, so really just make it simple. if you really dont come up with anything, just say thank you. youre there reading for some reason, tell the author what it is. fic comments dont need to be book analysis essays (tho those are. incredibly appreciated as well if you want to write one!!), writers publishing their works for free online appreciate any kind of feedback regardless if you consider it good or well written. a comment is a comment

bottom line is, leave comments on fics and other written works. its whats keeping this game alive

another thing on adhd and confidence. today i messed up a quiz I thought I had prepared for; it involved multitasking & memorizing movements. I hadn't managed to do that while completing the other part of the assignment.

And I remembered: every day in 6th grade, I had the same schedule, and I had to look up each class & the room number every time until the end of the year or I would forget. I think of my drop spindle, and how I constantly forget which way I spin my thread, and cause the thread to break. I still forget to brush my teeth before bed, or to put my retainer in.

It's not about confidence or work ethic. When you have adhd, "what if I can't" becomes a real question you have to contend with.

I genuinely try not to assume bad faith when I see undescribed posts, because there's a lot of people who genuinely can't describe posts, a lot of people who just forget sometimes, and a lot of people who are still learning. Probably most of all, there's a lot of people who are ignorant about accessibility (online and in general) due to mainly societal failures — but have absolutely no malice behind their choices, and are completely willing to learn as soon as you reach out to them politely.

In these situations, I've had some really productive and encouraging conversations that simply would not have been possible while assuming bad faith. And on another level, I think it's just mentally healthier to internalize the difference between anger about widespread inaccessibility (fully justified anger, potentially productive) versus rage over any individual's actions (still understandable feelings, but sometimes unwarranted, less likely to be productive). Separating the two has made describing images a lot more mentally sustainable for me...

But like. When people post screenshots of tweets. Including screenshots of the tweet's alt text. When the alt text from the tweet is even the main focus of the post, perhaps. And yet. the post is undescribed? I do still want to bite and rip and tear something.

#but to be encouraging again:#i feel like i've had some certain image descriptions get reblogged from me a *lot* recently #which is anecdotal and all - but i do get the feeling that more people are leaning/remembering to check the notes #and i've seen lots of new artists describing their art in fandoms that previously had very little artist-described stuff #there's a long way to go. but that doesn't mean we're not moving forward #rosalia talks #accessibility
