Tips On How To Spot Actual Vs Faux Valentino Rockstud Pumps
Not a lot beveling BUT there's a non-slip texture added to the solely real already! The darkish yellow color isn't very pretty IMO, however a minimal of there is not a colour bleeding from the sides. The cream color is not at all flattering on my skin tone, and doesn’t exist in the authentics, either. Much thicker than the authentic, and appears slightly shorter than Annie’s and KP’s. Someone familiar with Valentinos would instantly have the flexibility to tell it’s faux. At the time I saw this bag, I appreciated the total leather of this bag, and it was very cute! It appears to be just a plain plaid, however a extra in-depth look reveals that it has no apparent stitching, but as an alternative uses capitonné’s craft and fixed it with rivets to create this very full padding effect. Valentina married cosmonaut Andriyan Nikolayev on 3 November 1963 on the Moscow Wedding Palace with Khrushchev presiding on the wedding ceremony party together with high authorities and space programme leaders. The marriage was encouraged by the Soviet space authorities as a "fairy-tale message to the country". General Kamanin, head of the house program, described it as "most likely helpful for politics and science". I assume the studs are most likely not steel — they aren’t cold to the contact just like the buckle, which undoubtedly IS metal — but they're securely connected and don’t have chips. The gold colour is slightly bit lighter than the studs of the authentic Valentino, however I think it looks prettier that method. Surprisingly MORE flexible than the Kaitlyn Pan pair, although it’s patent! Smells like leather, slight chemical odor that shortly dissipated. All models are of the kitten heel peak (65 cmm/2.5 in). The guidelines required that the potential cosmonaut be a parachutist under 30 years of age, less than a hundred and seventy cm in height, not more than 70 kg in weight. By January 1962, the All-Union Voluntary Society for Assistance to the Army, Air Force and Navy had chosen four hundred candidates for consideration. After the preliminary screening, fifty eight of these candidates met the requirements, which Kamanin reduced to 23. On 16 February 1962, Tereshkova was selected along with four other candidates to join the female cosmonaut corps. Let’s cut to the chase — if you see Prada for $75, you run. The Luna Rossa Ocean is a balanced mix of woodsy and citrus that any guy in your listing will love. And, it includes the much-loved vetiver scent that’s in style in most candles. A concoction that’ll have you ever dreaming of summer time, Dolce & Gabbana’s Light Blue perfume is impressed by the sun-drenched Sicilian mandarin , encapsulated by freshness and makes an excellent less-than-$100 reward. Otherwise, according to his personality, it will not be hot. I have by no means seen or planted grass within the early stage. These two months are carrying every single day, especially gentle, generally sporting a thick coat will all the time subconsciously touch the bag to verify that the bag remains to be not. The nude colour is more of a true nude than the pink beige of the authentic Valentinos, however I don’t assume Annie's factory has that shade. I think the true nude that she did have is prettier although so I’m happy with it — it appears identical to the picture of the black/nude reverse Rockstuds I noticed on Instagram . It hits all the right notes of the stuff your grandpa used to wear but by some means does so in a lighter method. wikipedia handbags The Hedonist is a dark, woody perfume with slightly little bit of effervescent sweetness that pulls via during wear, thanks to the ginger and bergamot at the very top. Princess Daisy : pencils_and_pincushions // photo: that_fedora_photographer
I’m a Canadian cosplayer who has been cosplaying since 2007. I’ve had a love for Victorian fashion since I very young age (my little kid brain basically made the connection that Victorian dresses = women dressing like Disney princesses IRL), but the thing that kickstarted my desire to learn sewing was going to a fabric store with my mother when I was in my senior year of high school and seeing a Butterick pattern catalogue that had Victorian-inspired costumes. Almost instantly I had a lightbulb moment that if I learned to sew, I could actually wear those big fancy gowns I loved.
I entered university and, over the next few years, spent my free time reading and learning everything I could about sewing. In 2007, my best friend invited me to Anime North - she was going as a gothic lolita-inspired version of the Queen of Hearts, so I decided I would make a Mad Hatter to accompany her.
I was so excited that I jumped in completely head-first, and it ended up being my first foray into both sewing and pattern drafting. In hindsight it was wildly ambitious for a first project (and I’m still a little surprised that I actually pulled it off!), but I’m so glad that my enthusiasm made me persevere and psh through the challenges, because I learned a ton from that experience and ended up with a cosplay I was thrilled with.
I remember seeing myself in the mirror the first time and being so happy when I realized I’d been able to bring something to life from my imagination. When my friend and I got to the con, things only got better from there - the atmosphere was so energetic and colourful thanks to all the amazing cosplays, and it was filled with so many fun, enthusiastic, and friendly people. From that day I was officially hooked on cosplay.
Tumblr media
I’m part of the Toronto Steampunk Society and, each year at Fan Expo Canada, we hold an Annual Costume Challenge where we pick a theme and encourage people to make a costume based on the theme. A couple of years ago, the theme was ‘steampunk video game characters’ and one of my friends in the TSS, Modern Myths Cosplay, thought it would be cute to do Princess Peach and Princess Daisy.
I loved the idea and, after more discussion, we decided to do a steampunk twist on the Super Smash Bros Brawl version since it was fancier and seemed to lend itself well to a steampunk interpretation. Though Daisy isn’t officially in Brawl, my friend was fortunately able to dig up some fan edits of Peach in Daisy’s colours, so with that we were set.
I usually make my outfits myself, but since my friend and I wanted to ensure our cosplays matched, we decided to work collaboratively and divide things: I would create the bodices and accessories for both gowns, and she would create the skirts and crinolines.
I started off by drafting the base bodice patterns. Since I draft all my costumes, I used my existing bodice block/master patterns for myself and drafted a bodice block from scratch for my friend based on her measurements. One neat thing about working this way was that it basically turned into a girls’ weekend where I was able to teach my friend more about pattern drafting, which ended up making the process unexpectedly fun and memorable.
After I finished fitting my friend’s bodice block, I got to work drafting our bodice patterns based on the reference pics we had collected. Being able to tackle both bodices ended up working well since it enabled me to draft them in a way that made them visually match identical while taking our respective body shapes into account.
A couple of mockups and fittings later, we had an idea of how much fabric we needed, so we went fabric shopping. My friend suggested that we go with richer, more regal-looking tones instead of strictly game-accurate colours, so when we found a place selling gorgeous peau de soie and sparkle organza, I was instantly sold on a gold and burnt orange colour scheme.
Tumblr media
We split the fabric based on our respective portions and worked on them separately. I cut and sewed the bodices, which was fairly straight forward but time-consuming! The part that sticks in my mind the most was the center front panel because it had so many pieces and layers - two types of satin, two types of organza (including one that had to be ruched to the base panel in multiple places), five rows of lace, interfacing...and that doesn’t even include the lining!
I also created our jewelry and crowns. The brooches and earrings were made from filigree settings that I painted, glued gems, and attached pin backs and earring hooks to, and the crowns are made from craft foam painted in gold acrylic, with embellishments assembled from painted filigree stampings and gems.
My friend created our cage skirts from 1/4 PEX pipe and brown grosgrain ribbon, which ended up being the perfect hoop skirt material since it was cheap, lightweight, and strong enough to support the huge, heavy skirts. She cut and sewed our skirts (including attaching meters and meters of trim that I’d painted white to better match the game colours) and she also made our bloomers.
The gowns were a huge undertaking and, thanks to work and general real life eating up time, we did end up engaging in the dreaded con crunch, but fortunately in the end we were able to get them to a state where they were pretty and wearable!
Tumblr media
The response at the convention was absolutely amazing - I don’t think I’ve ever had a costume elicit the reactions that Princess Daisy did. We figured that, since we were cosplaying the princesses from Mario, there was a good chance we might be recognized, but the thing I wasn’t prepared for was how genuinely happy and excited people were, especially when they saw us together. We literally had kids waving at us from across the street when they spotted us.
Even grown-ups loved it - we were frequently stopped for pictures, and even a couple of the folks in the dealer’s room who were running booths would break into huge smiles and ask for pictures. Plus, people loved the steampunk twist and were delighted when they realized how much our costumes matched.
The best, most heartwarming response to my Princess Daisy cosplay happened when I met up with some other friends and one tapped me on the shoulder, pointed behind me and said, “I think she wants a picture with the princess.” I turned around and, standing a few feet away, was this adorable, super shy little black girl who was staring in my direction. My heart instantly melted and I went over to her and had a little chat and took a picture with her.
As a black cosplayer who has run several panels on BIPOC cosplay and spoken about the importance of diversity and representation in cosplay, being able to show that sweet little girl that someone who looks like her can be a princess - and showing kids of other races that Princess Daisy can be black - was a vivid reminder that representation does matter.
Tumblr media
Since I got into the hobby, cosplay has been a big part of my life and has positively impacted me in so many ways. It has been an incredible creative outlet that has given me the chance to express myself, and it has allowed me to meet so many wonderful people - many of whom are now among my closest friends. However, I think one of the most rewarding things about cosplay has been how it has allowed me to provide BIPOC cosplay representation and visibility within my local cosplay community. I often do Afro-steampunk cosplay, and one of the most unexpectedly moving things I’ve experienced has been other BIPOC saying to me that seeing my outfits make them feel like they can cosplay.
It has been humbling and has motivated me to get more involved in the cons I attend. For the past several years I’ve run panels on diversity in cosplay/steampunk as well as sewing and cosplay construction, which has enabled me to share the knowledge and skills I’ve learned. I also lead the steampunk section of the Anime North Fashion Show, and I’ve made a point to recruit as diverse a roster of models as possible. I’m happy that we’ve been able to showcase steampunk looks inspired by various cultures including Chinese, Indian, and Morrocan.
Another plus is that the sewing skills I’ve learned from cosplay have come in handy in other areas of my life. It has been fun - and surprisingly empowering - to be at a point where I can use my sewing ability to create one-of-a-kind outfits for formal work events (like office holiday parties) that make me feel pretty and confident.
Something I’ve frequently mentioned during my BIPOC cosplay/steampunk panels is that the simple act of showing up to a con or event in cosplay can have an impact because you never know how much that visibility can inspire other BIPOC to get into the hobby, so my advice to anyone wanting to get into cosplay is to do it! Overall I have found it to be a fun, creative, energizing experience.
While I’ve been extremely fortunate to have had overwhelmingly positive experiences while cosplaying, I recognize that, unfortunately, BIPOC do sometimes face harassment and outright racist comments (especially online) that can make getting into the hobby seem scary. Finding welcoming, supportive spaces in person and online can be a big help (the POC Cosplay group on Facebook is great for this) - plus, thanks to things like #28DaysOfBlackCosplay, there is more visibility and inspiration out there than ever before.
The other thing I’d add is to treat each cosplay as a learning experience. Being able to work so closely with my friend on creating a cosplay was a completely different creation process than I’m used to, and it was really cool to be able to learn from each other’s different working styles and experience. It was great to teach her pattern drafting and see how happy she was to learn skills she could apply to future cosplays, and I was so excited when she showed me her PEX pipe hoop skirt method. Looking back on my Princess Daisy cosplay makes me smile because it’s almost like a physical representation of the fun we have cosplaying together.

A Fishy Vacation (Y/N and the Stardust Mer Trio)
————-
The weather was perfect for a nice day at the beach: warm and sunny, but not too hot, especially for the three mermen in Y/N’s backseat who certainly would not appreciate getting very dry. Y/N felt that the boys needed to experience a little freedom now and then, after being cooped up at home in a little pool or in their tanks at the aquarium for a long time.
Not that they were kept prisoner in any way, mind you, as they stayed on their on volition: all of them staying due to a fond friendship with Y/N, Kakyoin being curious and fascinated with the sights and sounds of land, Polnareff due to his jolly disposition and his fondness for meeting new people, and Jotaro…he just enjoyed the peaceful solitude of the aquarium’s largest tank where nobody could bother him.
It had been almost half a year since the mermen were found hurt on the shore, and were nursed back to health by Y/N and the aquarium crew. But during their stay there, they’d made new friends and enjoyed their new life, so much that they’d refused to go back in the sea even when the aquarium gave them the choice to be released back to the ocean. And so the trio stayed, and became more than just residents of the aquarium, but members of the staff as well– even with their own salary that Y/N helped them manage.
Still, Y/N thought it was only fair for them to get to be in their natural habitat now and then, and so drove them to the beach on weekends. They loved car rides, eagerly peeking out the windows, especially Polnareff, who enjoyed the view of the countryside, the city, and the cliff overlooking the seaside. They were perfectly fine on land so long as they kept themselves moist, which Y/N had draped wet towels over the backseat for that very purpose.
Eventually they reached their destination at the beach, which was only fairly crowded at this time of day. Y/N parked their car on the softer sand, next to the beach, and dismounted, opening the door for the mermen at the back. “We’re here!” they told the trio cheerfully.
Eagerly, the three mermen scooted over to the edge of the seat and pushed themselves out one by one, landing on their bellies on the soft sand with a loud, wet flop. They had no legs, and could not stand or walk, of course, but their strong arms and muscular upper bodies were not only for show, and were put to good use whenever they were outside the water, so long as the ground wasn’t too rough.
Before the mermen could crawl away, though, Y/N first had to set some rules for the three, which they knew were known to sometimes get troublesome at times. “I’d love to see all of you have fun,” they said, “but as the beach today is more crowded than it usually is, I would appreciate it if you avoided bothering the people here if they don’t like to interact. Remember to always stay close by to me, at least just close enough to see you, and keep yourselves wet so you won’t get dehydrated. Otherwise, you’re good to go! Enjoy yourselves and have fun!” they said with an encouraging gesture.
At once, the three mermen went shuffling away across the sand, propelled by their muscular, toned arms and helped along by small pushes of their tails. It looked rather odd, awkward and clumsy from a human perspective, and Y/N couldn’t help a giggle as they watched them move, but the mermen didn’t mind, and at the least their ungainly means of locomotion got them going wherever they wanted to go, so they weren’t complaining.
“Tres bien! What a wonderful place!” Polnareff exclaimed, looking all around like an excited child as he wriggled his way along.
“Is that cherry ice cream they’re selling there?” asked Kakyoin, clearly distracted by a vendor on the beach and the prospect of his favorite land food.
“Yare yare daze, make it quick, everyone.” grumbled Jotaro with a sigh, the least enthusiastic of the bunch. “I just want to get back to the aquarium and be alone.”
The three mermen soon split up, with Polnareff crawling off to explore the boardwalk, Kakyoin checking out the vendor stalls by the beach, and Jotaro heading off towards the sea, where he sat next to the rushing waves and rested his colorful tail in the cool, soothing water. All of them, of course, remembered what Y/N had said, and promised to keep within sight.
It wasn’t long before the sight of three mermen crawling about on the beach began to attract some attention. Their existence of course was now well-known around the city, having been in public view at the aquarium for many months: but still, it was an unusual sight for many, and children would excitedly squeal and point, while older folks sometimes stopped to snap pictures.
Polnareff absolutely reveled in the attention. He loved meeting the land people, and enjoyed showing off. As a small crowd began to gather around him, he lay on his side on the boardwalk, striking poses and blowing kisses, and proudly showed off his shiny silver tail which gleamed brilliantly in the sunshine. He, ever being the romantic, also couldn’t resist throwing some playful flirts to the ladies who gathered to admire his toned physique and beautiful tail.
Alas for him, his attempts were met with awkward giggles at best and scorn at worst. “Sorry, fish boy, but we prefer our guys with legs,” said one lady dismissively. Pol gave a dejected-looking glance at Y/N, who smiled reassuringly and gave him a pat on the shoulder. “You’re perfect just the way you are, legs or not,” they told him. “Come on, let’s go check on the others.”
Y/N strolled over to the vendors and the kiosks, Polnareff following suit. Among the three, he was the best at traversing land, and could crawl fast enough to keep up with Y/N, pausing only for them to moisten his gills and tail with the spray bottles Y/N had brought along to keep them hydrated. Soon they reached the stalls, where Kakyoin sat on the smooth floors, trying to make a bargain with a confused ice-cream seller.
“For the last time, we only accept cash,” said the exasperated vendor, glancing down at the sitting merman and his offering of clam shells. Kakyoin sadly gazed down at his collection of shells, which he had spent hours in the shallow sea gathering the prettiest ones he could find. “Not even this nice one?” he pleaded, holding up a colorful conch shell.
“That’s not how it works, Kak!” Polnareff yelled out at him, as he crawled his way over, his tail sliding behind as he clambered onto the tile floor. “The land people only trade with the leafy greens!” he said, prompting a laugh from Y/N, who had struggled to explain to Polnareff what dollar bills were, when they recieved some from the aquarium as the mermen’s salary as honorary aquarium staff. “Come on, Y/N, give the guy some of the greens.”
“It’s called money,” Y/N explained to the two mermen. “It’s how we humans trade goods and services. Like doctor appointments, or groceries, or ice cream,” they told as the two mermen listened in intrigued fascination. “We can’t just trade random objects for something in return,” they added as they made their purchase on the redhead merman’s behalf.
Soon Kakyoin had his ice cream and was happily licking away at his cone. “There you go,” smiled Y/N. “Now I’ve got to go and check how Jotaro’s doing.” They headed off to the seashore along with Polnareff, while Kakyoin stayed behind, as he was holding and eating an ice cream cone and couldn’t follow as he needed his hands to crawl. “I’ll just join you later,” he said with a wave.
Y/N and Polnareff headed to the shore, only to be met along the way by Jotaro crawling back inland, followed by a group of curious children, who had gathered around him, asking all sorts of questions. Jotaro normally didn’t mind children, and got along with them just fine, but their silly questions of these ones were beginning to get exasperating.
“Are you a mermaid?” asked a wide eyed little girl. Jotaro sighed. “No, I am a merman.”
“Why are you crawling on land?” asked another, a little boy. “Yare yare, can’t you see I don’t have any legs?” Jotaro replied, trying to be nice but clearly irritated by the repetitive nonsense questions.
“What happened to your legs?” piped in a third. Jotaro groaned. “I said I don’t have any because I’m a merman!"
"Alright you kids,” Y/N intervened, sternly but kindly. “I’m a friend of the merman. If you have any questions about them ask me instead, I’ll be glad to answer them! Jotaro here doesn’t like it when people get too loud around him. Please respect his space.”
The children happily complied, and Y/N spent most of the afternoon answering any questions the children had about the mermen: where they lived, what they ate, where they came from. Polnareff too joined in, as he was more open to attention than Jotaro was, and he was nice enough to let the curious children see his tail up close, flexing and bending it to convince a few naysayers in the crowd that his tail was indeed real and that he wasn’t just a “man in a costume”.
Soon Kakyoin, having finished his ice cream and followed them into the sea, joined in the fun, where he had a great time interacting with the kids, demonstrating his beautiful singing voice, and even teaching them how to swim: merman-style, with an undulating dolphin-kick. Y/N watched the whole commotion with a smile, glad the mermen were enjoying themselves, while Jotaro retreated to the warm shallow water, glad that he could finally have some peace and quiet now the kids were preoccupied with the other two.
Soon the sun began to set, and eventually one by one the tourists departed, the children waving their goodbyes to the mermen as their parents called them home. It wasn’t long until it was just Y/N and the mermen left on the beach, sitting by the shore as the gazed at the fiery glow of the twilight horizon.
“This is always the best part of going to the beach”, Kakyoin sighed pleasantly. “A beautiful view of the sunset. Something that happens everyday, yet is always beautiful each time you see it.”
“Couldn’t have said it better myself, cherry boy,” Polnareff added, stretching out his arms and tail with a yawn. “It’s been a long and fun day, I’m all tired out,” he moaned.
“Alright, boys, I guess it’s time for us to go home now,” Y/N said, as the last tangerine sliver of the sun disappeared below the horizon. The three mermen wholeheartedly agreed, and followed Y/N as they walked back to their car, crawling with far less vigor than they did at the beginning of the day. Y/N smiled as the exhausted mermen approached the car with sleepy looks.
“Hold on, I’ll help you climb back up onto the seat,” they said, as they sprayed the towels draped on the backseat to keep them wet again. With a little struggle, they lifted the mermen one by one into the car, first Polnareff, then Kakyoin, and finally Jotaro, who usually hesitated at being handled when on land, but was now too exhausted to even care.
With the trio in place, and Y/N making sure no fins were at risk of getting caught in the door, Y/N mounted the driver’s seat and started the engine. Soon they were driving off the beach and back onto the road, as they headed back to the aquarium for the night.
“So, how was your day? Did you have a great time?” Y/N asked, glancing back at the mermen
But no answer came but Polnareff’s faint snores, as the mermen, exhausted from their long day at the beach, were quickly, and soundly, already fast asleep.

On an album of bittersweet childrens music that she wrote more than ten years in the past, the girl who arrived to generally be recognized only given that the piano Instructor supplied what, in hindsight, seems like an eerie glimpse of her very own future.
Im shifting away currently to a location so far away, wherever no person is aware of my name, she wrote during the lyrics of the song known as Shifting.
When she wrote that music, she was young and vivacious, a piano Instructor and freelance new music author who liked Beethoven and jazz, sunsets and river Seems, extensive walks and every thing about The big apple.
On one of those beloved walks, by Central Park in the bright Sunlight of a June working day in 1996, a homeless drifter beat her and made an effort to rape her, leaving her clinging to existence. Following the attack, the words and phrases to her music came real. She moved away, out of New York City, outside of her outdated daily life, and all but her closest good friends did not know her title. To the rest of the entire world, she was -- like the far more well-known jogger attacked in Central Park seven several years previously -- an nameless symbol of the urban nightmare. She was the piano Trainer.
Now, about the 10th anniversary from the assault, she's celebrating what is apparently her comprehensive recovery from brain trauma. She is 42, married, with a small baby. She's Kyle Kevorkian McCann, the piano teacher, and she or he really wants to tell her Tale, her way.
youtube
Her medical doctor advised her it would just take a decade to Recuperate, and Sunday was that talismanic anniversary. I sense my everyday living has long been redefined by Central Park, she reported various times in the past, her voice soft and hopeful. Prior to park; soon after park. Will there ever certainly be a time After i dont Assume, Oh, Here is the 10th anniversary, the eleventh anniversary?
She spoke in her modest ranch dwelling within a wooded subdivision in a very Ny suburb. She sat within a eating space strewn with toys, surrounded by pictures of her cherubic, darkish-haired two-year-old daughter. A Steinway grand filled 50 percent the place, and at a single level she sat down and played. Her participating in was forceful, but she appeared embarrassed to Engage in quite a lot of bars, and shrugged, rather then answering, when asked the title of the piece. She asked that her daughter and her town not be named.
She phone calls that day, June four, 1996, the day After i was hurt.
Hers was the very first inside of a string of attacks by exactly the same man on 4 Females more than 8 days. The last victim, Evelyn Alvarez, 65, was crushed to Loss of life as she opened her Park Avenue dry-cleaning store, and ultimately, the assailant, John J. Royster, was convicted of murder and sentenced to existence in prison.
But the attack over the piano teacher is definitely the just one people today appear to keep in mind by far the most. Portion of the fascination has got to do with echoes in the 1989 attack within the Central Park jogger. But Furthermore, it frightened folks in a method the assault around the jogger didn't simply because its situations ended up so mundane.
It did not happen inside of a distant Component of the park late during the night, but in close proximity to a preferred playground at three inside the afternoon. It might have happened to anyone. The strain was heightened from the thriller with the piano teachers identification.
For three times, as police and Health professionals tried out to find out who she was, she lay in a very coma in her healthcare facility mattress, anonymous. Her mothers and fathers ended up on vacation and her boyfriend, also a musician, was in Europe, on tour. Last but not least, certainly one of her college students identified a law enforcement sketch and was in a position to discover her inside the hospital by her fingers, for the reason that her confront was swollen further than recognition. The law enforcement did not launch her identify.

She does not keep in mind the attack, Even though she has heard the accounts with the law enforcement and prosecutors.
To me its just like a point I realized and memorized, she claimed. Like I have been a college student in school studying record.
She won't give thought to The person who did it. I might need been angry to get a instant, although not a lot longer than that, she reported. How could I be indignant at John Royster? He was declared not crazy, but I guess by our specifications he was.
Dr. Jamshid Ghajar, her health care provider at The big apple Clinic-Cornell Health-related Center, as it absolutely was acknowledged in 1996, told reporters that she had a 10 per cent potential for survival. Physicians experienced to eliminate her forehead bone, which was later replaced, to generate home for her swelling Mind. When her mother designed a public attract pray for my daughter, hundreds did.
After eight days, she arrived outside of a coma, initial in a vegetative condition, then in a childlike point out. As she recovered, she slept minimal and talked constantly, sometimes in gibberish. I had been obtaining mad at individuals whenever they didnt reply to these words and phrases, she said.
Like an Alzheimers individual, she had little short-expression memory and would forget about people when they left the room.
Over a number of months, she had to relearn the way to walk, costume, study and publish. Her boyfriend, Tony Scherr, visited every day to Enjoy guitar for her. He encouraged her to play the piano, against the recommendation of her Actual physical therapists, who thought she might be disappointed by her incapacity to Engage in the way she after experienced. Mr. Scherr played Beatles duets along with her, playing the still left-hand section whilst she performed the correct.
That was my most effective therapy, she claimed.
In August, she moved back again property to New Jersey, together with her father, an engineer, and mom, a schoolteacher. She visited aged haunts and called close friends, striving to restore her shattered memory. I used to be very obsessive about remembering, she said. Any memory decline was to me an indication of abnormality or deficit.
Her therapists assumed her development was great, but her two sisters protested that she wasn't the deep thinker she had been.
What bothered her most was that she experienced dropped the ability to cry, as if a faucet inside of her Mind were turned off. A person evening, nine months just after she was hurt, she stayed up late to look at the John Grisham Film A Time for you to Eliminate. Just just after her father had long gone to mattress, she watched a courtroom scene of Samuel Jacksons character on trial for killing two Gentlemen who had raped his youthful daughter.
The faucet opened, and also the tears trickled down her cheeks. I thought about my mothers and fathers, my father, and whatever they went by way of, she explained. Minor by small, my experience returned, my depth of intellect returned.
Tumblr media
Urged by her sisters, she went back to high school and acquired a masters diploma in new music schooling.
Not almost everything went well. She and Mr. Scherr split up five years once the assault, however they remain mates. She dated other men, but she often instructed them about the assault instantly -- she couldn't help it, she mentioned -- plus they never ever referred to as to get a next day.
We've to search out you an individual, her Good friend David Phelps, a guitar player, stated four yrs back, before introducing her to Liam McCann, a pc technician and newbie drummer. For after, she didn't say just about anything in regards to the assault right until she bought to learn Mr. McCann, and after that when she did, he admired her toughness.
Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani, who had often visited her at her bedside whilst she was within the hospital, married them in his Times Square office. She wore a blue gown and pearls. While she was pregnant, in a burst of creativity, she and her mates recorded When Were Youthful, an album of childrens tracks that she experienced published ahead of the attack, such as the music Shifting. Her ex-boyfriend, Mr. Scherr, made the CD. On it, her spouse performs drums and she or he plays electrical piano.
Is her daily life as it had been? Not specifically, however she's reluctant to attribute the differences to her injuries. Her last two piano pupils still left her, without calling to elucidate why, she stated. She has resumed enjoying classical tunes, but uncomplicated items, for the reason that her daughter doesn't give her time for you to follow. As for jazz, I dont even try, she stated.
She would like to generate extra, emotion stranded while in the suburbs, but she is easily rattled. She tries to be articles with being property and caring for her daughter.

For her part, the piano Instructor appreciates she has adjusted, but she has manufactured her peace with it. I was form of a hyper ---- I dont know if I used to be a kind A, but I used to be formidable, she states. Why was I so formidable? I used to be a piano teacher. I dont really know what the ambition was about. I really did come back to the individual Im designed to be.
Correction: June thirteen, 2006, Tuesday An post on Thursday about Kyle Kevorkian McCann, a piano teacher who was overwhelmed and sexually assaulted a decade in the past in Central Park, misstated the title of her album of childrens songs. Jeff Bezos blew off Amazon employees proposal at the shareholders meeting and they were miffed, This is not the kind of leadership we need
Nearly 8,000 Amazon employees publicly signed a letter asking their company to drastically limit its impact on the environment. They hoped to present their plea directly to their boss, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, at the company’s annual shareholders meeting on Wednesday.
But the boss was not available — at least not right then.
Bezos attended the shareholder meeting in Seattle, and took the stage later Wednesday morning to answer investor questions and discuss business highlights.
When the employees backing the climate proposal had their moment to speak at the event though, Bezos was apparently not in the room.
Amazon employee Emily Cunningham, one of the organizers of the climate proposal, stood up to introduce it to the other shareholders at the meeting. Her voice shook as she started to speak, she said. And her first question was, where’s our boss, Jeff Bezos?
She asked him to come out on stage so she could “speak to him directly.” The event moderator shrugged her off, saying that Bezos would be out later. When asked if Bezos would be able to hear the employees’ proposal, an awkward silence hung over the proceedings until the MC curtly responded: “I assume so.”
The employees who were working so hard to get Bezos’ attention on an issue near to their hearts were not pleased.
They later tweeted on the Twitter account, Amazon employees for Climate Justice, “This is not the kind of leadership we need to address the climate crisis. We need a plan, a commitment to zero carbon emissions. Employees no longer ‘assume’ we’re doing enough. We want to lead the way.”
The episode was a telling example of the complex landscape that Amazon now operates in, with the $915 billion company facing increasing scrutiny over its business practices even as investors and customers praise its services.
Read: After selling his company for $6.5 billion and doing 40 angel investments, Ross Mason is joining an unusual quant-like VC firm
In addition to the climate advocates, protesters, some dressed in poop emoji costumes, gathered outside to protest work conditions and Amazon’s facial recognition software.
Despite how well Amazon stockholders are doing these days — the stock is trading at about $1,860 — the atmosphere inside the room at the shareholders’ meeting was not celebratory, reported CNN Business reporter Lydia DePillis.
“This is a buttoned-up, no frills, just-get-it-over-with event,” DePillis tweeted from inside the room.
There was no livestream and journalists were not allowed to bring cameras or take photos. Those who tried were stopped by the company’s PR folks.
Lots of support, except on the board
The climate letter signed by Amazon employees urged the company to do more than offer a handful of green programs. They want a plan for Amazon to stop using fossil fuels in its operations entirely with the goal of making Amazon a zero-emissions company.

The employees also called for things like no longer helping oil companies with fossil-fuel related projects. (Amazon Web Services has a unit dedicated to the gas and oil industry). They want the company to stop supporting politicians with abysmal climate legislation track records. And they want the company to not punish employees, including hourly workers, who miss work due to climate-related events like hurricanes and fires.
But their official shareholder proposal was far more modest. They wanted the company to develop a disaster recovery plan for climate-related events and to publish a progress report on Amazon’s attempts to limit its fossil fuel consumption.
Amazon’s board of directors did not back the proposal, arguing that the company’s green initiatives were plentiful enough. And, since shareholder proposals virtually never pass without board support, it was was voted down. This despite the fact that two of the nation’s two largest proxy advisory firms, Glass Lewis and Institutional Shareholder Services (ISS), came out in support of the resolution. (In fact, all 11 shareholder proposals presented on Wednesday, none of which were supported by the board, were voted down.)
In all, 7,683 Amazon employees signed their names to the letter, representing about 12% of the company’s tech employees, one of them said at a press conference that was livestreamed after the shareholder meeting.
“They completely dodged our question”
About 50 employees had crowded into the shareholder’s meeting to support Cunningham, who works as a UX designer at her day job, and her speech.
They had to jump through hoops to do be allowed in, she said at the press conference. This year there were multiple controversial proposals being presented and security was tight.
In years past, an employee badge was enough to get into the meeting, Cunningham said at the press conference. Many employees are paid in stock so they are shareholders. This year, however, the badge wasn’t enough. They had to prove their their stock ownership, Cunningham said.
Despite the photography ban at the meeting, the Amazon employees took a few pictures and tweeted them, including one showing all of them raising their hands to ask a question of the boss, Bezos, when he was on stage.
During the Q&A, they did get a chance to ask their boss questions.
An employee, Orion Stanger, Software Development Engineer, asked: “We’ve talked a lot about our renewable energy goal being long term but we don’t have any dates associated with that.”
He pointed out that as an employee, it would be unacceptable not to have deadlines for his projects. He asked Bezos point blank: “What is the date for when we will achieve 100% renewables for all of Amazon’s operations?”
An Amazon rep responded: “As we’ve said before later this year, we’re going to release our carbon footprint publicly and along with that goals associated with carbon so more to come on that, nothing to share today. The long term goal today remains a long term goal but more to come this year.”
They were not happy with the answer.
“We’re on to Q&A and all of us raised our hands but they completely dodged our question. This isn’t climate leadership,” they employees later tweeted.
Some encouraging signs
If there was one bit of good news for the employees pushing for an eco-friendly agenda it’s this: beyond the cold shoulder of their boss, none of them have experienced any retaliation at work over this, they said.
In fact, they’ve experienced the opposite. In addition to nearly thousands of employees signing the letter, they’ve heard from coworkers thrilled that they’ve taken on this social action.

So the employees said they aren’t giving up. In fact, they are taking a victory lap in as much as they can. They first began the process of their shareholder proposal six months ago, and feel they’ve scored a few wins, including Amazon’s commitment to use carbon credits to offset the impact of its packaging/shipments, a plan called Shipment Zero introduced in February.
“In six months, we’ve won changes including Shipment Zero and a commitment to share our company’s carbon footprint, but we know these half-steps are not nearly enough to address the scale of our company’s contributions toward the climate crisis,” said Jamie Kowalski in a statement emailed to Business Insider. Kowalski is a software development engineer who co-filed the resolution and attended the shareholder meeting.
“Amazon has the scale and resources to spark the world’s imagination and lead the way on addressing the climate crisis. What we’re missing is leadership from the very top of the company,” he said.
“We have the talent to do this. The tech exists. It’s just a matter of making the right choices,” another Amazon employee, Weston Fribley, said at the press conference.
