Dear Ghana

I don’t know where to start from. How does one say goodbye after promising that they’d never leave. Leaving. That Was always going to come, but I never intended that it be forever, but now, here I find myself, miles away from you without a way back. Not because I lost my way, but because you are silent. Because you’re trees and seas, you’re music, you’re history. In these manifestations you say little on my behalf. I can hear nothing from this far out. All I see is your indifference. it is hard to keep a promise to one who doesn’t see me. Ghana, you don’t see me. And so I cannot come and let loyalty kill me. And so I didn’t leave, I ran away. To seek refuge in another kind of struggle. To make my home another land. To miss you every day, and in some moments contemplate what could be possible if you loved me just a little.

Dear Ghana, it is toxic. To crave the very thing that inhabits poison. And yet I carry a dull ache for you in my heart. A longing for all I have known. Of everything that I used to call home. Dear Ghana, I am a cast out. I am denied, ostracized, criminalized. I am curse, I am an abomination, I am insufferable. My pain is numbed by anger. Bile rising from my stomach, tearing me asunder. I am bursting from rage from the rape, the murder, the pillaging. And all the blessings showered on the damaging. Of the hopelessness in the future. Of the flatness in the air. Of having nothing good to write about. Of having nothing good to pray about. Of having nothing true to believe in. Of realizing that truth can be deceiving. I just want to be alone and left alone. I just want to come and go as I please. I just want to be one of many, who journey forth to return. Who can speak of peace and mean it.

But what is Peace to the likes of me? Who have to do battle in order to be free? Fated to win my heritage through blood and toil. With no good name to defend. With no god to offer help.

Dear Ghana, what is to become of you? What will become of us? What will time tell? Will it be of my numbness, my apathy? Will you be needing me at a point where I gha-nathing for you?

As a Black queer woman, it's important to me that we bring attention to the discrimination against our community that still remains a major issue. It's my goal, as President of the Human Rights Campaign, to continue to fight for our people and show that these numbers are NOT a way forward. Black LGBTQ+ people face pervasive discrimination in their everyday lives, which continues to negatively impact their economic and social well-being. An analysis by the @humanrightscampaign, found that 26% of Black LGBTQ adults surveyed experienced sexual orientation-based discrimination while applying to a job or at work. And 23% of LGBTQ adults of color, 22% of transgender adults, and 32% of transgender adults of color have no form of health insurance. These are just two areas where Black LGBTQ+ people face discrimination. I'd rather see puppy masks and leather daddies at pride than more fucking mickey mouse rainbow ears and flying tiger totebags or any of your family friendly corporate merch while they quite literally use the money you just gave them to kill us. Instead of giving your money to them, invest in actual family-friendly queer activities for children.

Protect drag queens story times, support your local queer children's book illustrators, support local gay youth groups, bands, etc, and push to keep inclusive sex education in schools.

At your fellow queers help us make so many safe queer spaces that the only option for kids and youth to celebrate their pride won't be just the one measly parade they grant us out of pity in june. Fight for more spaces instead of making the few ones we have more tight.

MoM hot takes

So like...I know I am about to provide some controversial yet brave opinions, and if you disagree I would love to hear your takes. Just plz explain yourself so I can actually understand your point of view. These are my personal opinions, and should be treated as such -- not as a Master’s thesis level dissertation on the movie. Obvs, spoilers ahead!

I’ll start with the good stuff:

- Y’all....y’all...Lizzie absolutely EATS in this movie. She is giving a legitimate Oscar worthy performance. Benedict, Xochitl and Rachel McAdams also absolutely GIVE in their performances, and I love them. But Lizzie is just next level, she put her whole neck, her back, her p*ssy and her crack into it.

- I’m so excited for America Chavez’s future in the MCU...also, #queerrights

- “Run”

- *shakes head* “Mmm-mmm”...I almost came

- Good GOD the score during the dream walking scene, Lizzie’s hand acting, the whole sha-bang was just *chef’s kiss*

Onto my real beef with the ~film~:

- They did our girl Wanda so fucking dirty lmao, like let her be happy, she was making progress post-Wandavision!

- Like, I’m actually convinced Sam Raimi did not watch Wandavision. I say this, because the whole character arc of Wanda doing something unsavory and then repenting at the end is, like - literally Wandavision’s whole point for her character?

- I mean she already went through the whole “I don’t want to hurt anyone!!” thing in Wandavision. It feels like we regressed.

- ^ the above can be explained by the Darkhold’s effects on her, which brings me to my next point

- They reallllly should’ve delved deeper into the Darkhold. The way that they just flippantly mentioned it and didn’t really explain it’s deep rooted effects on Wanda further seemed so lazy and did a true disservice to her character for pure shock value and to speed up the plot

- That musical note battle scene and the twins singing had the entire theater in nervous uncomfortable laughter with quite a few audible “what the fuck”s

- Like I fully know Wanda/Scarlet Witch is very villainy in the comics, but a) this is the MCU, not a direct interpretation of the comics and b) I wouldn’t have minded if it WAS a direct interpretation of the comics (#women’s rights AND #women’s wrongs!) , but it literally wasn’t because c) if they literally k*lled her off...they wasted SO much of her story and potential for the MCU.

- Overall, I just felt like the movie was waaaay too rushed, too all over the place, and definitely a Sam Raimi movie, NOT a Marvel movie. Which, as a fan, is disappointing when I go to see a MCU film for the characters and story and not for a specific director’s shtick/signature

Again, feel free to tell me I’m wrong! I totally respect and understand why some people think it was the best movie ever, but in my unqualified, unsolicited (yet humble) opinion, it was disappointing. :/ (still not the worst MCU movie, and I will definitely be giving it even more repeat watches)
