Tony had a secret: When he was eleven years old, an owl arrived at his bedroom window with an invitation. It was from a school that sounded imaginary, claiming he was magical and needed to be shipped off to London.
Tony threw the invitation in the trash can. At eleven years old, Tony Stark had little time for nonsense; all his time was devoted to inventions.
But magic, like puberty, could not be evaded.
Five years later, Tony slid from one alleyway to another, piecing together a shortcut uptown from the Brooklyn record shop in a neighborhood he was very much not supposed to be in. A wave of a hand here and there, willing no one to notice and no one did.
Another corner turned, and that’s when he heard it. “Get the heck away from my friend!” Followed by the slam of fists against skin and the same voice shouting. “Not him! Hit me!”
A martyr at the end of what sounded like a losing battle. Tony stopped in his tracks, pivoted left instead of right, and came face to face with two teens his age. One had dark, shoulder-length hair and large brown eyes, a bruise rapidly darkening the skin around one of them. He was shielding the other teen, a shorter blond boy, behind his back. In front of them stood three men with bloody knuckles that matched the blackened and bruised eye.
“We told you what you had to do to get past this alley, Barnes. You and your buddy both.”
“We’re not giving you shit. Even if we had money, it’d never see your pockets.”
Tony loathed bullies, hated robbers and thieves just as much. Another swing and the man’s fist landed hard on the teen’s face again, causing him to stagger back.
“Is that all you got?” The man, Barnes, taunted through a bloody lip.
The three men were cowards, chickenshits. Rage blazed through Tony like a wildfire. These criminals should be clucking, not throwing fists at teens in alleys. Tarred and feathered, that’s what they used to do to men like them, but now they roamed the streets, free instead of penned where they belonged. Tony could see them in his mind's eyes, three criminals transfigured into the chickens they resembled, and then—poof!
In the alleyway stood three chickens, just like he’d imagined it.
Fuck.
Maybe, if he’d taken up that offer five years ago, he might better understand how to control these abilities. But instead, he was staring over the chickens at the two teenagers, disbelief evident in their faces. Panic roared through him.
Fuck.
One of the chickens clucked.
Barnes reacted first. He didn’t scream or faint or freakout. Instead, he laughed.
It transformed his bruised face, softening it with delight. Tony couldn’t look away because…Fuck if he wasn’t the most beautiful man Tony had ever seen.
The chickens clucked again, but Barnes ignored them this time, walking towards Tony with an outstretched hand. “Bucky Barnes.” His bruised eyes twinkled in the streetlights. “You may be my favorite person in Brooklyn, besides this guy back here--” he pointed at his friend “--and I’ve only known you for thirty seconds.”
Tony laughed, nervous. “Abracadabra?”
Bucky grinned. “Is that your name?”
Tony shook his head, sliding his hand into Bucky’s. “Tony Stark. This, uh, was just a joke, a bit of humor.” The spark of unshed magic still ran through Tony’s veins. It was the only thing that could explain the electricity flowing between his hand and Bucky’s. Though…with the way Bucky flexed his fingers, Tony wondered if he felt it too.
“I’d say we owe Stark here dinner, at least. What do you say Stevie?”
“Uh, I say we’re broke?”

Bucky laughed. “I think we just gained three chickens…I’m joking! We’re not going to eat these three stooges.” He turned back to Tony. “We’re not that broke. And you seem like the most interesting person I’ve ever met, so what do you say?”
Twinkling eyes, electric touch, split pouty lip—Tony had to say he was well on his way to being smitten. But he wouldn’t say that, because that would be weirder than turning three humans into chickens. Instead, he nodded. “I could eat.”

Everyone thought Tony’s problem with small spaces was as a consequence of being locked in a cave for three months, but it had actually begun way before that, in an incident with Howard. After Afghanistan, he had just become unable to hide it. He wasn’t going to talk to anyone about Howard, though, so he was happy to let everyone believe it was the caves.
Except that meant Bucky’s words weren’t going to have the desired effect.
“Focus on my words, Tony,” he was saying, “we’re not in a cave, we’re in an elevator, in New York, in a blackout, but we’re going to get out of here soon, I promise.
“Look,” Bucky continued, “the walls are smooth, so, not a cave ok? Touch them, look.”
Yup, not having the desired effect.
Tony was not in an elevator in New York. Tony was not in some caves in Afghanistan. Tony was in Stark Mansion, in a dark closet, waiting for Howard to let him out. It was his punished for being too noisy. Maybe after a few hours alone, he’d learn to shut up.
It was actually quite comfortable. He was warm and it smelled nice. And someone was playing with his hair. He loved that.
“Sorry, I didn’t know what else to do,” the warm cushion he was squished against said.
Not a cushion then.
Ah.
Bucky.
Bucky tried to let go, but Tony grabbed him harder, leaving no space between the two.
“Sorry,” Bucky said again.
Tony shook his head. “I like it,” he clarified.
“Not that. You…” Bucky hesitated, “you were calling for your dad.”
“Oh. That’s because he was the one who locked me in a closet.”
Tony didn’t know why he said it. He never told anyone about Howard. Maybe he just didn’t want Bucky to feel guilty.
Bucky pulled him even closer. “Shit. That happened often?”
“The closet? Not really, but other things, yeah…”
“Then I’m not that sorry I killed him.”
Tony muffled his laugh against Bucky’s shoulder, and if it ended up more sobbing than laughing, no one commented.
The lights went on, the elevator started moving again with a jerk, and Tony reluctantly separated from Bucky.

What fandom would you like to dig into if you had the time/energy/tolerance for toxic fans?
Honestly, no idea. My brain doesn't want to follow anything that requires effort at this point in time, like the only TV I can really watch anymore are things that don't have a continuous plot line and also have already ended so I can't be disappointed by future creative choices.
I haven't stopped writing MCU fic but I have stopped posting any opinions about the films/shows because it's not worth the wankery

Character headcanon - Kate Bishop: ♒ - cooking/food headcanon
It's not exactly like Kate doesn't know how to cook - she knows how to cook very well, actually. So well that she's able to keep up with the conversation when it gets very pointed about culinary details.
It's just that she can't be bothered to prepare ahead for her meals - that's why it's easier to just pull something from the freezer or from the store and heat it up again.
When she manages to plan ahead though, she whips up amazing food and has impeccable technique. Kate is very adamant about using the right kitchen knives for the right tasks and will use her elbows to make her opinions known if a knife is being used wrong.

Hi Poli! Sorry to leave this sitting for so long but wanted to do it justice! SO. Director's Commentary, implying I have a direction? should be fun.
A Child's Initiative is part of a larger series of course, Children of Light. This third installment was written for a certain lovely *AHEM* and is still planned to be finished (when the author is no longer being quite so thoroughly crushed by life). When it was planned out, all of the stories in Children Of Light would have Assigned-Letter chapter names. Son of Stark: B, To Lose A Child A, A Child's Initiative R. In a perfect world I'll finish A Child's Initiative and the other 3 associated stories in fairly short order keeping with this theme/idea I had. (Want to guess what it spells? LOL).
The series largely started because at the time I was writing fluffy things and folks sort of nudged me to do other things? (They also wanted things a little higher rated and I'll probably do more of that later but I think only one short of mine sort of checked that specific box and it's nowhere near the COL series.) So I started out the series with the part that upset me the absolute most (JARVIS's death) as I was supremely annoyed that the MCU basically glossed right over it? Like it was a non-issue? LET TONY MOURN HIS SON DAMN IT.
I do tend to get a specific scene idea, picture, scenario etc and sort of go from there. (Sometimes it's a sarcastic comment, sometimes a text exchange.) For this series, it mostly launched because I had a certain idea about Tony leaning on some of J's old processing towers (in a literal server room) and crying, possibly sobbing himself to sleep. He'd probably wake up and do it all over again for days, forgoing food, just mourning in his empty house in a room that should be full of fans and flashing lights and was instead plunged into darkness. Understandably folks didn't want me to leave him like that, and ya know, who's gonna fetch him? Bucky, of course. Bucky will fetch him. And carry him to bed, and make him breakfast, and ya know, stand by Tony and do what he can. (Civil War whomst?)
But I don't generally? write character death, especially not Major Character Death, especially not MCD for characters I LIKE. So yeah, not leaving J dead, but this meant a sort of scavenger hunt, jigsaw puzzle, a collaborative effort of a team to put the shattered code etc back together again. So in upcoming chapters, we'll meet more of the Team, gather more of the pieces, and work our way toward the rebuild!

💞 Who's your comfort character?
I actually had to think about this one for a while xD I have A LOT of characters that I enjoy writing, but it was surprisingly difficult to pinpoint one I would call comforting.
But, in the end, I think I have to go with Cougar from The Losers. Partly because I can write him in my sleep by now — and do it well, according to my readers — but also because he's just... dependable. Capable, loyal, stable, and dependable. And I love that not only in people, but also in characters.
Writing him is very straightforward and he's never dramatic or difficult. Which some might find boring but I enjoy because it gives me more room to focus on the plot and story. The things AROUND him might be dramatic, but he rarely is. And that makes for some pretty relaxed writing on my part since I don't have to focus so much on keeping him in line.
Also, the cowboy hat is hot ;D

Fanfic asks: 🧐 Do you spend much time researching for your stories?
Thank you for the question!
I do typically prefer for my writings to ring true to what they’re describing so I try to take the time to make sure that I’m not just making up how something works.
I remember years ago I wrote a Harry Potter au and the characters were exchanging money so looked up the exchange rate for galleons to real life currency. Or recently I was writing a chapter and an oil lamp needed to be used so I looked up how to light an oil lamp so I would know what to do and what all the parts were called for the sake of authenticity.
So I guess the short answer is a lot😂
