a common complaint I always see about encanto is how mirabels sisters issues “came out of nowhere”
Here is your friendly reminder the movie is almost entirely from mirabels point of view. So it’s gonna be a little bit biased because mirabel at the start of the movie was biased when it came to her sisters (isabela). That’s not a bad thing because if we saw the story from isas pov we would think mirabel is being annoying and because we would be more familiar with her struggle rather than mirabels, the story would make you think mirabel is acting up because that’s what isa thinks! Encanto is a movie all about perspective and I see so many tiktoks saying if they felt so much pressure why did they never tell mirabel before?
well to answer that question it’s heavily implied mirabel is not close with either of her sisters. Sure we see how luisa is there for her and vice versa but luisa is so busy she doesn’t have much time for mirabel. Isa as we already know had a very strained relationship with her. The family’s whole issue is communication that’s why we only learn about their struggles when mirabel is the one to start questioning.
As mirabel gains understanding for other people’s perspective so does the audience. We think her sisters are perfect because that is how mirabel describes them we only see them when they are putting on the act like the rest of the family. When mirabel realizes how they have also been struggling its because they pretended they were fine when they weren’t.
Don’t get me wrong I’m not calling mirabel a horrible biased person because we all have unconscious bias especially when it comes to families! she’s not a bad person for not knowing how bad they had it the issue is nobody communicated their struggles!
Mirabels arc featured the fact she had to rethink what she assumed about her family. She assumed they were these perfect individuals because that is what’s on display to her and the audience.

Man its been weeks and I’m still soured by the conclusion to Fontaine’s main story. I'll just rant here
There were a lot of things I didn’t like about it (Arlecchino's altruism being played straight, Traveler being out of character, the lore exposition ass-pull with the prophecy slates, the weird logic about how destroying a Gnosis could potentially wake up the Heavenly Principles but not fucking destroying an Archon Throne when Celestia forced everyone to fight a GODDAMN WAR TO ESTABLISH THEM-) but the biggest offense to me was how Furina was handled. This was marketed as the grand finale of the arc, the climax with Furina at the center of it all. And she got shafted. Big time. Furina had no agency in the plot whatsoever, nothing she did had any effect on how things turned out, and she didn’t even have the dignity of fully understanding why it all had to happen that way.
(Also I will preface this with yes Furina and Focalors are technically the same person with the same origin, but after the split Furina lost all her memories as Focalors. They are two separate consciousnesses with different experiences, and therefore I will treat their individual choices as their own)
I’ve seen people try to argue that no, she chose to take on this role knowing she would suffer, that she didn't HAVE to go along with it. And she was even working by herself to solve the prophecy without relying on Focalors, she wasn’t a puppet/pawn! But the thing is she was essentially in a hostage situation. If she didn’t do things exactly as dictated by Focalors people would DIE. Like there is a reason why criminal punishments are lighter when it’s found the perpetrator was coerced into it! And her researching how to avoid the prophecy changed nothing about the outcome, she could have sat around eating cake and the story would have word for word turned out exactly the same. All that information served to do was highlight her suffering and draw the audience’s sympathy. That's what I mean about her not having agency, it's not about her ability to act as an individual but how her actions had an effect on the overall plot. None of her choices outside of the role designated by Focalors did anything to change the situation for better or worse.
And to top it all off she didn’t even understand WHY this all had to happen. Why do people dissolve in the Primordial water? How does her pretending to be an Archon play into solving the issue? Why can’t she confide in anyone? What the hell is Focalors even doing? She doesn’t learn the answers to any of these until after everything was over, and not even from Focalors’ own mouth, it was relayed to her by Neuvillette.
Speaking of Neuvillette, I’m not gonna lie I’m sorta annoyed at his existence because it felt like Furina was shafted for him. Everything is very tilted in Neuvillette's favor. He gets his powers back, full control over Pneuma/Ousia, final say in trials, the ability to hand out Visions, and just straight up the ability to manipulate life itself. And okay all these things were his to begin with lore-wise, whatever, but he also becomes the "lore important" character after this at Furina's expense. Furina doesn't have her memories as Focalors, she can't tell us anything about how the world works, about Celestia, about what happened 500 years ago. Even though other Archons didn't give us much either for one reason or another, they at least HAVE that knowledge, and are therefore guaranteed to have involvement in future events with the Abyss and Celestia. Furina at the moment, doesn't. Neuvillette has it now. And all that talk about Focalors judging Celestia? Also Neuvillette's job now. And it feels like it was all stolen from Furina from a story-telling perspective because again, she didn't know of the plan to return his powers. She didn't even get to explicitly agree with her other self that he should have them back. The writers really seemed to go out of their way to place him on a pedestal at Furina's expense, which irks the hell out of me.
There are some opportunity for future interludes to turn the current state around, and they probably will since Furina is still being marketed as an Archon, but as it stands I want Fontaine to be over so we can move on to the next disappointment.

i also find ink sans perception of others sooo interesting. cause I don't see it as like evil or anything. he views others in a very similar way we creators do. Its not like impassionate or uncaring. He gets giddy and excited like we do. I think an "au fangirl" is the best way to describe it. (i swore comyet described him as that once but I can't remember). hes like... a interdimensional cheerleader.
He just connects with others like you would your favorite character. Sure, you like them, maybe you like them alot! but you probably don't see them as like...as human as you right? I don't think he gets enjoyment or likes their suffering. But them their suffering is the equivalent of what we see on tv show. So yeah he probably will care more for the fact that he literally ceases to have a personality without them. he doesn't like... care about them on the deep level or sees them as human (or skeletons? in this case).
I mean, why would he it view if differently? if you knew there's hundreds of versions of pretty much the same guy existed, would you? If you knew they were just a bunch of code, would you? That's not evil, its understandable im my opinion. How are you supposed to connect with others when you literally have always been an outcode? He's about as evil as we are, in that regard.
this is not to say other sanes perspectives are bad, just ink's is just as understandable as others? understandable doesn't mean good, im just saying it's a reasonable thought process given his life experiences.
honestly this yappage is sorta for me to understand his character as well. they say write what you know right?

A thing I keep coming back to when thinking about Calamity is how, in another story, Zerxus and Laerryn would have been heros. Like we talk about villain-coding our characters but in some cases that can be so dependant on what the in-story environment is and also what genre they exist in. Zerxus, especially-- I feel like in young adult fiction and nineties/2000s sci-fi movies, the whole point of the narreative was demonstrating that large systems/institutions cannot be trusted, especially those that provide you with one narrative that you're meant to adopt as your history and is meant to inform your entire belief system. If Zerxus had done exactly what he'd done in a dystopian novel/movie, listened to someone who society told him was bad, didn't fully trust him but gave him an opportunity? He'd be the change agent that revealed the dark truths of his society and we'd all be cheering for him. Laerryn I would not call a hero in a different context, but I also have a hard time reading her as a villain even within the canon (but I'm biased). What I will say, is do we all remember that Star Trek (or similar space opera show of your choice) episode where the secret project that somebody was working on saved the day? Or countless pieces of media where acting instantly and thoughtlessly to save someone you care about is romanticized? Yeah. Anyway, disclaimers, this is purely my own reading of the text, I'm probably wrong, I am not in any way saying that what they did didn't have horrific consequences. I am just saying that if we scooped up at least half of the Calamity gang and plunked them down in a different genre and they took the same actions, they'd be the good guys without question.
