☼ bloody flowers (Peeta Mellark) ☼
Tumblr media
warnings; swearing, death, death mention, blood, ehh gore, weapon use. peeta’s mean.
wc; 2.3k
prompt; 11. yelling at them because they thought they’d lose them.
notes; no katniss, roles for mockingjay are reversed.
“I’m going to try to tap a tree.” You tell Peeta and Finnick, breaking the silence.
Finnick is on his feet, slowly wading further into the saltwater, carefully rubbing it on his skin to ensure he’s got all the poison out. He barely looks over his shoulder to acknowledge what you’ve said, nodding. He’s having a hard time speaking, his throat is raw from the amount of fog he breathed in.
As you get to your feet, brushing the sand from your skin, Peeta looks over at you, eyebrows drawing in. “Let me make the hole first. You stay with him, you’re better friends.”
“That’s not…” You shake your head, but he’s heading into the jungle, knife in hand.
When you turn your head to look at Finnick—afraid that he’s heard what Peeta said—you can’t find him immediately. You shuffle forward in the sand, eyes searching the water. You spot him beneath the surface, easing your anxiety.
With that, you leave him be. You trust that he won’t accidentally drown himself, since he’s the best swimmer out of your group. And he’s going to need some time alone, after losing Mags to the fog in the jungle.
It was quick, you didn’t even have time to intervene. Finnick saw that you were struggling to carry Mags down the slope, after the two of you had switched, because Peeta was entirely too heavy to be leaning on you for support. In the brief break you took to regain your strength, Mags kissed Finnick goodbye and walked straight into the fog.
What happened didn’t register until Finnick was pulling you to your feet, ordering you to grab one side of Peeta, so the two of you could work together. You don’t have to say anything to Finnick to know that he’s hurt, the look on his face alone is a dead giveaway.
You find your melted jumpsuit strewn in the sand, alongside Finnicks and Peetas. It had been ripped off of you by Peeta, who was so desperate to get you in the water, that he’d forgotten how much it’d hurt being submerged. It could’ve been worse, you weren’t covered in nearly as much of the fog as Finnick had been.
You crouch next to Peeta’s suit, flipping it over to find the mockingjay pin still holding on tightly. You unhook it from his clothes, and move to pin it to the front of your undershirt to hold onto it for him. You then reach to touch the gold necklace to make sure that it’s still hanging around your neck.
The floatation belts seem to have not been affected by the fog at all. They look brand new, actually. You pull it around your waist, buckling it back on. As much as you’d wish to leave it, you’re not the best swimmer in the alliance. Peeta and Finnick are far better, which is why they’ll feel comfortable enough to leave theirs behind.
You stand again, stretching your arms above your head, feeling the soreness throughout your body. And then, you reach to pull the hair tie out to let your hair down, which has been severely damaged by the fog. Barely touching it, clumps come out, stuck between your fingers. The sight is only slightly nauseating. You comb your hair the best you can, watching as the collection grows. When it seems to have slowed, you pull your hair back into a ponytail, and fling the dead hair into the trees.
Speaking of which, Peeta’s found a good one ten yards in from the beach. You can hardly see him through the trees, but the sound of him drilling is unmistakable. You keep an eye on him the best you can, but Finnick splashing around is distracting.
He stretches, slowly, testing his limbs to see if they’re working properly. Gradually, he begins to swim, which is mesmerizing to watch. It’s nothing like the way you were taught to. There’s a rhythm, a pace. He dives, surfaces, rolls like a log of wood in water. He sprays from his mouth, and then he’ll sit underwater for minutes at a time.
When he finally comes back up, he looks better than he did earlier. He pushes his hair out of his face, walking in your direction.
You offer him a smile, “Feeling better?”
“Considerably.” He says, eyes finding the pin on your tank top. He touches it, squinting slightly. “Left the token, huh?”
“He knew I’d grab it.” You wave him off. “Let’s go help him, he’s going to need the spile.”
Finnick leads the way into the jungle, you follow behind him, fiddling with the necklace. He holds the trident to his side, the pole bouncing off his thigh when he takes steps too hard. You briefly look away to pop the locket clasp open, suddenly afraid that the fog might’ve damaged the delicate photos inside. You slam straight into Finnick’s back, having to catch yourself on his shoulder.
A question raises on your tongue, but he presses a finger against his lips to keep you quiet. He looks upward, into the branches that belong to the trees that hang above you lowly. You follow his gaze curiously, and your breath hitches in your throat at the sight of what’s been watching you.
You press your lips together, your left hand falling from your necklace, and your right readjusting the sword in your hand. There’s a mass of orange monkeys weighing down the branches. More than just five or ten, there’s easily two dozen, sitting there, waiting for one wrong move.
This isn’t the first time you’ve seen them. There was a pair of them right after you’d escaped the fog, Peeta had pointed them out. Those ones retreated, not wanting anything to do with the three of you. These ones don’t have any intentions on leaving.
“Peeta,” Your voice wavers slightly, Finnick glances at you. You take a breath, “I need your help with something on the beach.”
“Just a minute (Y/n). I think I’ve just about got it.” He tells you, still occupied with the tree. “Have you got the spile?”
“I do, but we’ve found something you might want to see.” You murmur, noticing how the monkeys are reacting to Peeta’s movements. They don’t care if you move. “Only move toward us quietly, so you don’t startle it.”
“I don’t want to lose the tree.”
“We won’t, we’ll be right back.” You tell him, motioning for him to come toward you.
He lets out a sigh, but listens. You chew on the inside of your cheek, listening to the noise he’s making. Still, the monkeys don’t move, because that’s not what causes them to be aggressive. He’s only five yards from the beach, when his movements become stiff, eyes darting up for a second.
It’s enough. The shrieking begins, as the monkeys all begin to move at an impossible speed to jump at him. They slide down vines, leaping large distances, fangs bared, claws shooting out. One word comes to mind.
“Mutts!” You snap, shoving past Finnick to get to Peeta.
You swing the sword carelessly, hitting the vital parts of the monkeys the best you can with the amount flying out of the trees. When you make it to Peeta, the two of you switch weapons, him slapping the knife into your hand for you to take so he can begin to do real damage with the sword.
Peeta’s got a better technique, bringing down almost as much as Finnick is with the trident. He’ll spear the mutts, and then fling them aside, off into the trees. The three of you form a triangle formation, trying to kill them efficiently. Only, you can’t keep up with your knife, they’re forced to cover you.
You feel a pair of teeth sink into your thigh before Peeta’s slicing through the throat, forcing the jaws to unhinge. The air grows heavy, from the trampled plants, the scent of blood, and the musty stink of the monkey mutts that hound you.
Peeta swings at one of them, and instead of landing the hit, the monkey secures the sword, and throws it into the trees, permanently making it out of the question. Then, it grabs a tight hold of Peeta’s arm, and swings him out of the formation, in the open. Where another monkey spots this, sprinting for the kill.
You begin to run for him, throwing the knife at the mutt that’s racing you. The mutt manages to dodge the attack, and you’re about to throw yourself at Peeta to save him, when someone else beats you to it, first. A woman materializes out of a tree, screaming loudly as she throws herself into the monkey, arms wrapping around its body.
It sinks its fangs into her chest.
Finnick’s trident hits the monkey with such force that it makes a loud squelching sound when the trident collides with its body. The mutt releases its jaw, Peeta kicking the body off.
“Come on, then!” Peeta shouts. “Come on!”
The mutts don’t seem to be interested anymore, retreating into the trees the same way they had done before. You reach to grab Peeta, hands shaking, when he suddenly points toward the beach, eyes hard.
“Go.”
Your mouth pops open, eyebrows drawing in, but you don’t argue, walking the five yards out of the jungle, onto the beach. The two boys follow behind you, with Finnick carrying the woman, who you’re able to recognize as the morphling from District Six, when you get a good look at her.
Finnick lays her in the sound, and Peeta follows behind him with your knife. He kneels next to her, cutting open the wetsuit that covers her chest, revealing the four deep wounds. Her blood is slowly emerging out of them, staining her skin. You’d say she’s fine, if it weren’t for the damage the monkeys did inside of her body.
She’s gasping for air, struggling to breathe. This could mean a punctured lung, maybe even her heart. Her skin is shaded a sickly green, sagging to reveal each one of her ribs. This is caused by years of abusing the pain medication.
She takes your hand shakily, squeezing tightly to ground herself. You lean over her, moving the hair out of her face.
“I’ll watch the trees.” Finnick says before walking away.
Peeta settles in the sand, voice soft, “With my paint box at home, I can make every color imaginable. Pink. As pale as a baby’s skin. Or as deep as rhubarb. Green like spring grass. Blue that shimmers like ice on water.”
She stares at Peeta, hanging on to every word.
“One time, I spent three days mixing paint until I found the right shade for sunlight on white fur. You see, I kept thinking it was yellow, but it was much more than that. Layers of all sorts of color. One by one.”
Her breathing is growing shallow, calming, dying. Her free hand dips into the wound on her chest, touching the blood as she swirls it on her skin, the same way she had in the Training Center.
“I haven’t figured out a rainbow yet. They come so quickly and leave so soon. I never have enough time to capture them. Just a bit of blue here or purple there. And then they fade away again. Back into the air.”
She lifts up the bloodied hand, painting a flower on Peeta’s cheek.
“Thank you,” He whispers. “That looks beautiful.”
Her face lights up, as she makes a small squeaking sound. And then her hand falls back onto her chest, giving out her last huff of air. The cannon fires. Her hand loosens in yours.
You sit there in the sand, watching as Peeta carries her into the water, carefully settling her on her back. She floats toward the Cornucopia, and when the Gamemakers are sure she’s a good distance away, the hovercraft appears to take her away. The claw drops, carrying her into the night sky, and she’s gone.
You get to your feet when Peeta comes back your way, but with the look on his face, you’re not exactly eager to touch him.
“What were you thinking?” He asks you. “Running at me like that. Are you trying to get yourself killed?”
Your mouth opens as you shake your head. “I—the mutt was coming right for you, I thought—”
“You thought what, (Y/n)? You were going to kill it with this?” He asks, holding your knife out for you to see. It’s stained red, sand sticking to the blood that refuses to dry. “Oh no, that’s right, you threw it at the mutt.”
You stare at him. “I’m sorry, okay?”
“No, not okay!” he shouts. “Were you even thinking?”
“I just—”
“I don’t need you trying to be the hero.” He tells you. “I had it handled.”
“I’m sorry, Peeta.”
“Don’t do it again.” He says, shaking his head. “It’s hard enough keeping you safe when you’re not running into danger. So don’t start doing it on purpose.”
“I won’t.”
He looks over your face, judging whether or not you’re being truthful, when his eyes dip toward your chest. His face smooths, holding his hand out, palm up. “Give me the pin.”
Wordlessly, you unhook it from the cloth and place it in his hand. “I didn’t want to lose it.”
“That’s fine.” He says, closing the distance between the two of you. He directs your chin up carefully, raising his eyebrows. “You know I love you.”
“I know.” You whisper. “I’ll be more careful.”
He presses a kiss to the middle of your forehead. “That’s all I ask.”

greedy | p. mellark

my masterlist.
summary: after months of being in what you think is a situationship with peeta, you finally confront him about whether or not there's anything truly there or if you're just another girl who has fallen for his kindness and misinterpreted the signs.
pairing: peeta mellark x reader (college!au, fratboy!peeta if you squint)
fandom: the hunger games
warnings: nothing too serious. implied nsfw at the end. afab reader. sorta ooc peeta...it's mostly environmental because we all know peeta's a flirt.
notes: based on greedy by tate mcrae even though the verse at the end gives me everlark vibes. also, this has been beta read. :)
word count: 2.8k
He’s here. Are you coming?
You looked at the blue and gray text thread, Clove’s name, and contact picture with a little clover emoji sitting right on top of it. A sigh escaped you as you looked up from your phone at the fraternity house that was positioned in front of you. You’d been leaning against the fencing that surrounded the yard for what felt like an hour, but in reality, it’d only been a few minutes.
As of late, facing Peeta Mellark has always been an unpredictable situation. While he was kind, polite, and charismatic, that charisma oftentimes led to him getting entangled metaphorically (at least you hoped) with other girls. You couldn’t tell if he didn’t know how to say no, was weighing out his options, or if he was what Clove often referred to as a “fuckboy”.
Fuck it. You rolled your eyes, stuffed your phone into your jacket pocket, and made your way across the cement walkway leading to the house. Having second thoughts, you pulled your phone back out, pulling up the same conversation with Clove.
Is she here?
The person you were speaking of was none other than Katniss Everdeen. She was the most recent girl that Peeta had been hanging around with and was simultaneously the cause of your latest installment of confusion. According to some of your other friends, she’d been friends with Peeta for a while and the study date you ran up on in the library was nothing but a platonic catch-up amongst busy friends.
However, one Madge Undersee had more than the opposite to say. All it took was one group mirror shot in the bathroom at a nightclub posted on Instagram, featuring you and Peeta in the outskirts of the photo, his arm wrapped securely around your waist, for her to send you a heated DM saying that he and Katniss had been a thing for forever and that you were coming between them.
You very quickly sent back, “Funny how the alleged ‘other girl’ always gets shit while the dude gets to slide by.” with a sarcastically placed upside-down smiley that was left on read still to this day.
A typing bubble appeared in Clove’s thread.
I don’t think so!
You let out another sigh, relieved that for now, Katniss wasn’t a worry. You walked into the house, looking around. There was a cloud of smoke in the air, presumably from various substances and/or a smoke machine, and bright lights coming from various directions. You squinted, trying to make out anyone you knew, but specifically trying to find Clove.
“Hey!” The greeting was slurred, long, and drawn out as an arm was all but dropped onto your shoulders. Finnick Odair was standing beside you, laughing at what appeared to be nothing. Finnick was a grad student that you’d met while waiting in line for coffee, quickly discovering that you two had mutual connections.
“Y/N…Y/N…you look…beautiful, stunning, ravishing…Have you seen Annie?”
You chuckled at how rapidly his thought process changed. “Nope, I just got here! Maybe try calling her?”
“Ha,” he let out, “I don’t…I don’t know her number…”
“But she should be in your… never mind, you’ll find her I’m sure.” you grinned, shaking your head.
“Alright, sweet!” Finnick started to walk away, but then quickly turned on his heel back to you, pointing in your direction.
“Almost forgot…Peeta’s looking for you!”
“What?”
The question was ignored as he walked away, approaching another male at the party the same way he’d approached you. Peeta was looking for you? Was he serious or just on another planet from the amount of alcohol in his system?
You kept maneuvering through the crowd, trying to locate the kitchen, knowing that’s where most of the snacks and drinks were. The kitchen also usually served as a good place to wait around if you were looking for someone.
You pulled out your phone, shooting a text to Clove to meet you in the kitchen. You stared down at the screen, hoping for a speech bubble to pop up saying she was either on her way or giving you simple directions to wherever she was located. You then felt yourself collide with someone in a way that wasn’t painful, but most definitely was going to lead to an awkward exchange.
“Oh shit…I’m so sorry…”
You were met with blonde hair and a black hoodie and then a beautiful set of oh-too-familiar blue eyes.
“Don’t be!” Peeta smiled, “I was looking for you! I sent out Finnick to look for you and everything.”
You rolled your eyes with a smirk, “Well, you might want to find someone sober enough to complete the mission next time, just saying.”
“You are probably absolutely correct…but it’s fine. Why send someone else when it’s something you can do on your own way better, right?” he smiled, leaning on the wall, taking a sip from his cup, “Do you want something to drink?”
“What is that?” you gestured to the cup, raising a curious yet somewhat fearful eyebrow.
Peeta shrugged, “I think it’s some kind of jungle juice. The base has to be Hawaiian Punch because of the color if that helps.” He extended the cup towards you, “Want to see for yourself?”
You nodded and took the cup, taking a sip. It was definitely Hawaiian Punch, and it wasn’t as strong as you thought it would be, which could either be a help or a hindrance.
“Pretty good, right?” he asked. You nodded in response, handing the cup back to him. “Do you want me to get you some of that…or I can try to mix you something myself?”
“Whatever that is, that’s fine.” you answered, following him over to a large orange Gatorade dispenser that had the word “NOT” written on a piece of tape, stuck above the label. You chuckled under your breath as you watched the blonde grab a cup, scoop out some ice, and then fill the drink. As he did this, you took the time to take in his appearance as your brain had been busy keeping up with the conversation instead of taking a good look at him.
He was in a black hoodie with a small logo on the chest; his blonde hair falling into his face a little. He also was wearing gray joggers with his university lanyard sticking out of the pocket, falling onto his leg with a pair of somewhat beaten-up sneakers. Despite his relaxed appearance, he looked put together. He looked good.
Peeta turned back to you, handing you the cup, which you took with a smile. “Do you wanna go somewhere quieter?” he asked, gesturing to the surroundings before refilling his cup.
Your stomach turned with nerves. He probably just meant to talk, but what if he didn't? You knew for a fact that your bra and underwear were not fancy, nor did they match, and you probably had the lowest body count in your friend group. You took a hard swallow.
“...To talk…” Peeta laughed, his tone sounding a little nervous as he scratched the back of his neck awkwardly and took a sip from his cup. The lights well-hid the red flush on his face.
“Oh…okay, yeah!” you laughed back, watching as he extended his hand. You took his hand, noticing how he immediately laced your fingers together as he walked you through the main hallway that you’d just walked through and up the stairs.
Someone at a distance must’ve seen you both making your way upstairs, because someone wolf-whistled and then called Peeta’s name, causing him to sharply turn over his shoulder to try and identify the person. He quickly stuck his middle finger up at no one in particular, given the culprit was never identified, and then sped up a little as you both got up to the top of the stairs.
“I'm sorry. People are dumb and make ridiculous assumptions…like I’m really not trying to…”
“Peeta, it’s okay.” you reassured him, “If Clove had seen me, she probably would’ve been ten times worse and reminded me of one of her ridiculous tips to supposedly eliminate your gag reflex that she learned on TikTok.”
Peeta somewhat choked on the sip of his drink that he was taking, laughing at your comment, “Who said you couldn’t learn something off of the internet.”
He led you down a shorter hallway to a door. He knocked twice before opening it, finding it just as he must’ve left it, as you quickly put two-and-two together that this was his room. He shut and locked the door behind him, took another sip from his drink, and sat it on his bedside table before flopping on the bed as you leaned against the wall.
You took a big sip of your drink, hoping the alcohol kicked in sooner rather than later to get some control of the nerves that were bubbling up across your entire body. You watched as the blonde turned on his side and looked over at you.
“I'm not gonna bite, sweetheart…unless you’re into that.”
You couldn’t refrain from rolling your eyes at his cheesy line before you walked over to sit your drink next to his. Then, you removed your jacket, hanging it from his footrest. Before you could even turn your attention back to him, you could feel his eyes on you. It was like he was bearing a hole into the exposed skin on your back that was left uncovered from your dress now that your denim jacket had been discarded.
When you turned back around, he rolled onto his back with his hands behind his head, smiling up at you. “You’re gorgeous.”
It was spoken so matter-of-factly as if he was telling you the most basic of observations…as if it were obvious to anyone who looked at you. You could feel your chest swell slightly at his words. Your instinct was going to be to tell him to stop or to refute what he said, but you took a breath and let out a small, “Thank you” in response as you sat on the edge of his bed and then slowly inched your way back onto the bed, laying next to him.
The room was silent, aside from the bumping music that was playing behind the door and down the stairs, and your eyes were fixed on the ceiling fan, watching it spin to avoid meeting Peeta’s eyes, fearing the burning blush that would overtake your body if you did.
“What are you thinking about?” he asked, breaking that silence.
“Nothing…” It wasn’t a lie, but it wasn’t the full truth either. You weren’t giving your full thought process to anything. Instead, your brain was in several places at once. You’d thought about the makeup tutorial you’d seen earlier set to the song that was playing downstairs. You’d thought about how close Peeta was to you. You’d also thought about Katniss and Peeta’s study “date” from a while back too.
“Baby, if something’s bothering you, you can tell me.” he said. You finally glanced over at him. He was on his side, facing you, leaning against one hand while the other played with his hoodie string.
Baby.
Before you could stop yourself, the bigger question tumbled out of your lips, “What’s up with you?”
His features scrunched together in confusion, “What do you mean?”
“You take me on dates. You kiss me. You hold my hand. You call me baby.” you paused, “But then, I see you at the library with Katniss Everdeen and I have one of her stupid little friends in my DMs accusing me of being a homewrecker because you have your arm around me in a photo I didn’t even post…and I’ve seen you talking to other girls too, Peeta. You do the same thing, leaning against the wall, standing close to them. You’re smiling and laughing and the girl is playing with her hair and laughing back at you. What is all of that? Am I just the one you know will answer your random texts and calls to hang out…go to the club… make out in your car? Am I some weird escape from reality like…who…”
You were quickly silenced by his lips on yours, one hand coming up to your cheek, pulling you in closer to him. It was almost second nature at this point and your body quickly betrayed you despite your frustrations and melted into the kiss as it deepened, your hand coming to rest on his ribcage, progressively snaking onto his back and then upwards into his blonde locks as he moved over top of you.
The motion of him nudging your leg with his knee so he could position himself knocked you back into reality like a harsh slap to the face. You put both hands onto his chest and applied just enough pressure to jerk him back into the present as well. He looked confused. His chest was rising and falling rapidly and his lips were slightly swollen.
“Did I do something?”
You propped yourself up, causing him to move, rolling back onto his back, his arm dropping across his chest as he rather obviously tried to cool himself down. You sat up, looking down at Peeta, whose eyes met yours.
“You never answered my question.”
“Yes, I did.” He looked at you like you’d missed the most obvious sign in the universe, but you already knew he meant the kiss, and that was not the answer you were looking for.
You shook your head, “A kiss isn’t an answer. If anything, it just proves my point. I don’t understand you. You clearly, in some way, want me. So, what is it? Are you just playing the field…fucking a bunch of random girls…Are you in love with Katniss still?”
“Katniss?” Peeta looked like you’d slapped him clean across his handsome face.
“Yes, Katniss…” You repeated, glancing from him to the door, wondering if it’d just be better to get up and go home. You knew fully well that he’d follow you. There was no getting out of this.
“I get it. You’re hot. You’re nice. I genuinely don’t think you’d try to intentionally hurt anyone, but…”
“That’s it, right there.” He pointed toward you as you spoke, “You talk about me and my mixed signals…what is that? You go from basically saying I’m some piece of shit heartbreaker to saying I’d never hurt anyone. You do that a lot. You’ll go from dancing with me and kissing me…letting me hold you while you’re sleeping to acting completely disinterested in anything outside of a friendship. I’ve never dealt with anything like this before. Girls are usually pretty forward with me…regardless of whether I feel the same or not. I don’t know if it’s intentional…like you think it’ll make me want you more or what, but it’s driving me crazy. Other girls may want me...I don't know for sure, but I know for sure that I want you, not them. I’m trying my best to show you that…but you just keep pushing me away and I wish you’d stop.”
Your eyes dropped to the floor, suddenly hyper-aware of a scuff on the toe of your boots. Your heart pounded as you tried to process what he’d said. He was usually so confident and sure in his abilities to keep sucking you back in, but the wavering tones in his voice indicated otherwise. He was serious.
You turned back to him, “I…I like you a lot…a lot more than just a friend…which is why seeing you with those other girls drove me fucking insane. I want you and for you to only want me. I don’t want to just be some kind of convenience for you. I’m either your girlfriend or nothing at all.”
His lips curved into a smile as your arms crossed over your chest, waiting for a response from the blonde. Peeta sat up and moved in closer to you, his forehead resting against yours, lips inches from your own.
“As you wish, girlfriend.”
His lips were on yours as soon as the title was spoken, moving slowly and sensually. His hand came to your waist as you fell back onto the bed, pulling him down with you as you finally let him move over top of you. The kisses grew needier and more passionate as your hands moved to the hem of his hoodie, pulling it and his white undershirt over his head and allowing for him to toss them behind him.
The articles of clothing caught your jacket, bringing it to the floor as well. Your phone slid out of the pocket as it vibrated, going completely unnoticed next to the clothing.
Where are you?
Hello?
Oh my god, Cato just said he saw you going upstairs with Peeta. Good luck. ;) Remember what I told you about spelling your name. Trust me, works every single time.

Moves & Countermoves (Part 19)
Summary: No one ever wins the games, even fourteen years later, Y/N is still playing. Trigger warning: discussions of trauma surrounding ‘desirable’ victors.

“Tell me about the stairs,” Dr. Aurelius says.
Y/N stares at him blankly, the stairs.
He waits a moment, tapping his pen to paper. “At the request of your husband, you will be issued a nightlock pill, to use in the event that you are captured.”
Y/N nods. One of the stipulations to Haymitch agreeing to her deployment, on this mission to rescue Peeta.
‘Show me you can reach it with your mouth.’ He tested the accessibility of her suit’s pill pocket, rigorously. ‘Show me you can still reach it with your hands behind your back.’
It isn’t something he wants her to use, but knowing that whatever Snow has planned for her would make Peeta’s captivity look like child’s play…
“By President Coin’s orders, I cannot release this… medication unless you are of sound mind.”
“You have reason to believe I’m not?” Y/N asks.
“One of your former guards told me you asked if anyone had ever jumped from the elevator.” Aurelius purses his lips.
“It was one time!” Y/N waves a hand, “and it was a joke.”
“You have a dark sense of humor.”
“You would too.”
The therapist affords her a soft smile, “you may be right. Even still, you are my patient. I need to act in your best interest. So please, tell me what happened on the stairs.”
Y/N takes a deep breath, “it’s kind of a blur. Everyone was pushing, yelling, especially after the upper levels were damaged and the rain started coming down.”
“How did you feel?”
“I felt…worried, I guess.”
“In what way?”
“About Haymitch, Madge and the kids. Worried about what was happening to Peeta. Worried about getting Katniss into the bunker.”
He jots this down.
“That was a normal response.” Y/N snaps.
“Very much so,” the doctor agrees, “not every note I make is a bad one.”
Y/N crosses her arms.
“Did you worry for yourself? Your own safety?”
You’re supposed to say yes.
“There is no right answer, Y/N.”
“There’s an answer that gets me to Peeta and one that doesn’t.”
“True,” he shrugs, “but I trust you not to lie.”
“You shouldn’t.” Y/N narrows her eyes. “I’m a good liar, I’ve been doing it since I was fifteen.”
“How do you feel about death? Is it something you long for, or run from?”
“If I die, my kids lose their mother, my husband loses his wife, my sister loses her sister. The list goes on. So it really doesn’t matter how I feel about death. All I know is that I cannot die.”
“Yet you think you could bite down on this pill?” He presents the dark purple capsule.
“As a last resort. If I have fought tooth and nail and I know, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that I can’t get free? I could.” Y/N decides.
Dr. Aurelius nods, holding the nightlock out to her. “Best of luck.”
————————————————————————
Haymitch curses Katniss’ name, as he shuffles through the crawl space she’s gone to hide in, after refusing to make the propo saying thirteen survived Snow’s attack.
Have kids, they said. It will be fun, they said.
Though none of his biological children have forced him to squeeze in such a tight space, parenthood is not for the faint of heart.
He plops down beside her with a sigh, “so this is the end, huh? I guess we’re just gonna hide down here forever.”
“I can’t be the mockingjay,” Katniss chokes out.
“Not the mockingjay,” Haymitch tosses a bit of hair away from her face, “just Katniss.”
She blinks at him, warily.
“Look, I know I’m not good at this pep talk stuff. That’s Y/N’s department.”
“She doesn’t want to see me,” Katniss understands.
“She spent the morning getting cleared by her shrink.”
“Cleared for what?”
“They’re going to rescue Peeta.” Haymitch tells her.
“What?”
“The dam went down in district five, took out most of the power to the Capitol. Knocked out their signal defense, Beetee’s inside their system, reeking all kinds of havoc. The window is open to us, for how much longer? I don’t know, I guess until the Capitol can get the power back on.” Haymitch explains.
“And Coin?”
“I can never fully support that woman. But Plutarch got word that Peeta and the others are in the tribute center. With the power out, Coin sees this as an opportunity. She knows that Peeta is the Capitol’s weapon, the same way you’re ours. And as opposed to having you two pointing at each other, she’s going to get him.”
“I have to go help them.” Katniss springs to life.
“Woah, hey,” Haymitch reaches out a hand to stop her. “What’re you just gonna jump out of the vent and go storm the Capitol? Besides it’s already underway. Six soldiers went in, volunteer only. Y/N, Gale, Boggs and three others.”
“You just let her go?” Katniss frowns.
Haymitch admits, “she’s not the type of person you ‘let’ do things. But you know how that is, sweetheart. Between the two of you,” he lets out a low whistle, “I’m exhausted.”
————————————————————————
Madge breaks her dinner roll in half. Splitting it between Everest and Arista, the same way she’s watched Y/N and Haymitch do since they got here. Making sure little bellies are full, before their own.
Pollux approaches, motioning to the seat across from Madge, at the metal mess hall table. He sets down his tray and pulls out his note pad, to jot a message down. “Is this seat taken?”
“No,” Madge greets him, “please, sit.”
“Hi, I’m Pollux. You’re Y/N’s sister, right?”
Madge nods.
“She keeps your picture in her pocket.” Pollux smiles. “And them.” He points to the oldest children.
Everest’s eyes scan the page. “Our mom told us about you. What happened to you in the Capitol…I’m really sorry.”
“Honey,” Madge runs a hand over his hair.
“Thank you, Everest. It’s nice to meet you. Your mom talks about you all the time, she is so proud.” Pollux turns the page quickly, for more room. “Arista and Daisy too, of course. Your mom loves you all very much.”
With that the children turn back to their meals.
Madge smiles, stabbing at her food with one hand, while patting the baby in the sling. The tray moves and Pollux holds out a hand to stabilize it. “Oh, thank you. It’s ok though, you eat.”
He draws the hand back, long enough to scribble, “I’d offer to hold the baby instead, but I don’t think we’re there yet.”
Madge laughs, “funny.”
“It’s really no trouble.”
Madge shrugs, as he grips the edge of her tray, loosely. Managing his own dinner just fine.
Cressida calls him away, after a while, for Finnick’s live propo, to help jam the Capitol’s airwaves.
“I’ll see you around.”
“I’ll see you.”
————————————————————————
“This is Finnick Odair, winner of the sixty-fifth Hunger Games, coming to you from district thirteen, alive and well. We survived an attack by the Capitol, but I’m not here to give you recent news.”
“Why is Finnick doing a propo?” Katniss wonders, watching the split screen of the control room. The large, right panel is an image of Finnick. Just outside the rubble, where they asked her to film earlier, the sun has set and the lights are trained on him. The left hand side is home to six smaller panels, with the soldier’s helmet cam footage.
“It’s a lot more than that,” Haymitch informs her.
“Beetee’s commandeered the system,” Coin says, proudly.
“They’re down to generator power, so there’s a more limited range of frequencies available to them. I’m filling them all up with Y/N and Finnick. It looks like they’re both live.” Beetee assures Katniss.
“Snow will think she’s still here?” That’s brilliant.
“Not many will see it, but those who do will assume they’re just propos.”
“What they don’t know is that these broadcasts are jamming their entire system with noise. Early defense warnings, internal communications, everything. As long as one or both of the broadcasts are going through, our team should be able to get in and out without being detected.” Beetee assures her.
“You can survive the arena, but the moment you leave, you’re a slave.” Finnick narrates. “President Snow used to sell me, or my body, at least.”
“Mockingjay one, you are twenty seconds from perimeter defense.”
“I wasn’t the only one. If a victor is considered desirable, the president gives them as a reward, or allows people to buy them. If you refuse, he kills someone you love.” Finnick presses on, looking straight at camera.
“Ten seconds.” The hovercraft pilot begins counting down. “Nine, eight, seven, six.”
“Just because a victor is married doesn’t mean they’re safe.”
“Five, four, three…”
“The Capitol’s more generous patrons paid dearly to watch the wedding night, even more to witness the conception of the most beloved children in Panem.”
“Two, one.”
Katniss freezes, surely he doesn’t mean- it couldn’t be. The dress, that stupid dress they crammed her in. Why it upset Y/N so badly. Snow was taunting her.
“No response from perimeter defense, we’re inside Capitol airspace.”
“Yes,” Beetee rejoices.
Haymitch is watching the smaller screen, his jaw tense, doing his best to ignore the eyes that fall on him. Twisting his wedding band around and around. It doesn’t matter what secrets Finnick reveals, so long as he keeps jamming the signal. Keep Y/N safe.
“To make themselves feel better, patrons will offer presents of money or jewelry. But I found secrets to be a much more valuable form of payment.”
“Gear up,” Boggs orders the soldiers on the hovercraft. They are just seconds away from the tribute center. “Masks on.”
Their lenses are tinted for night vision, the red light inside makes Y/N’s heartbeat faster.
“Open the door.” Boggs says, his voice echoing through her headset. “Command, this is team leader, preparing to deploy gas. We will confirm once inside.”
“Such a young man when he rose to power, such a clever one to keep it. How, you may ask, did he do it?” Finnick is captivating, well spoken.
Katniss is hanging off every word.
“One word, poison.”
The timer for the gas grenadines finishes, on Bogg’s stop watch, “get ready to drop.”
Y/N secures her harness to the wire, giving it a firm tug. Descending through the open loading dock, releasing the wires as they reach ground.
“Clear.” Boggs, informs the team. “We’re inside, headed for target number one. Cell B forty-five, lower level two C.”
“So many deaths to well known adversaries, even allies who were deemed as threats.”
It’s dizzying, giving equal attention to Finnick’s message and the feed from inside the tribute center.
Haymitch is glued to that screen, her screen. Like he wants to reach through and bring her back with him.
Once Peeta’s holding cell is gassed, they are cleared to enter.
“Snow would drink from the same cup, to deflect suspicion. But antidotes don’t always work, which is why he wears roses that reek of perfume. To help cover the scent of sores, in his mouth, that will never heal.”
Poison, Katniss shakes her head to clear it. He’s still talking about poison.
Inside the room is a lab, full of jars, experiments. Cages. Medical equipment, some with blood still visible.
“What the fuck?” Y/N whispers, reaching out to try and make sense of it.
“Abernathy, on me.” Boggs warns, they need to stay focused.
“What is this place?” Gale asks, venturing deeper.
Their screens lights up, all of them at once. Too bright to see.
“Ahh.”
There is a collective hiss, from those in the tribute center. The power’s back on.
“Beetee?” Katniss has a hand flat against her belly, where the worry eats her alive.
“Ma’am, the Capitol air defense is rebooting. It’s coming back online.”
“They must be diverting power from another source, filtering transmissions. Another sixty seconds and we’ll be cut off.” Beetee scowls, typing furiously at the control panel.
“Get them outta there,” Haymitch demands.
“Madame President, should we call back the hovercraft?”
“Broadcast me,” Katniss decides, “if Snow’s watching this, maybe he’ll let the signal in, if he sees me. Put me on the air so he can see me.”
“Yes,” Plutarch snaps a finger. “Yes.”
“Put her on,” Coin agrees.
“Can we still do this?” Haymitch’s hands are shaking as he positions the camera in front of her. “Can we still get in?” Can we still save her?
“Yes, for the moment,” Beetee replies. “The line’s open, he will only see you.”
“Ok, Katniss,” Haymitch steps away. “Go.”
“President Snow.” Katniss says, “President Snow, it’s Katniss.”
The static continues to crackle. No more Finnick, no more footage from the tribute center. Just her.
“President Snow, can you hear me?” Katniss repeats, hoping for a miracle. “I need to speak with you, are you there? President Snow.”
“Miss Everdeen,” his voice is distorted for a moment, until the signal hones in. “What an honor. I don’t imagine you’re calling to thank me for the roses.”
“I never asked for this. I never asked to be in the games.” Katniss reminds him. “I just wanted to save my sister and keep Peeta alive. Let him go and I will stop being the mockingjay. I will disappear and you’ll never have to see me again.”
“You couldn’t run from this anymore than you could’ve run from the games.”
“Please, you’ve won.” Katniss says, “release Peeta and take me instead.”
Snow shakes his head with a smirk. “We are long past the opportunity for noble sacrifice.”
“Then tell me what to do, I’ve always kept my promises. Haven’t I?”
“You said you didn’t want a war, and that’s just what happened. I told you what a fragile thing peace was and still, like a child, you took pleasure in breaking it. I know what you are, I know you can’t see past your narrowest concerns. But please, Miss Everdeen, I doubt you know what honesty is anymore.”
“You asked me to convince you that I was in love with Peeta,” Katniss challenges. “Haven’t I at least done that?”
Snow takes great pleasure in what he’s about to say, it’s written all over his twisted features. “It’s the things we love most that destroy us. I want you to remember I said that.” He pauses. “Don’t you think I know Y/N and your friends are in the tribute center?”
Katniss feels the floor fall out from under her.
“Cut them off.” Snow says, turning away from the screen. It returns to the static hum of nothing.
They had comms back, but now Beetee’s lost them again.
“What happened?” Katniss sobs.
“Boggs, do you read me? Boggs, come in.”
“He knows they’re in there,” Katniss calls to Haymitch. “It’s a trap.”
“Katniss, calm down.” Haymitch whispers.
“We have to get ahold of them, tell them to get out. He knows.”
“There’s no signal, we can’t contact them,” Plutarch sighs.
“No, Haymitch.” Katniss crumbles, “he knew the whole time, he was taunting me! No, Haymitch-”
“No, no, we don’t know that.” Haymitch hushes her, because he has to be strong. He has to be steady, even with his world falling to pieces.
“Did I lose them all tonight? Did I lose them all?”
Haymitch pulls her into a hug. “Shhh,” he smooths down her dark waves, the same way he would his other daughters.
She holds fast, allowing him to comfort her. “Did I lose them?” The cry is muffled against his shoulder.
“Shh,” he sways them, gently.
“No, no.”
“Katniss,” Haymitch breathes, “listen to me. I need you to listen.”
She nods, unable to calm her erratic breathing.
“If Y/N died, I would feel it. I would feel it in my heart, if she was gone and I don’t. If she’s alive, Peeta is alive, Gale is alive. All we have to do is wait.”
————————————————————————
“Systems are back online.” The pilot informs them.
There’s nothing they can do. Communication with thirteen is shut down, no way to get through to Beetee. They’ll either shoot them out of the sky or they won’t. The only way out is through.
Y/N doesn’t mean to, but she holds her breath. Waiting until they clear Capitol airspace to resume a normal pattern.
Of the five other soldiers on this rescue mission, there is one medic. She begins tending Annie, Johanna and Peeta in turn. Starting IV fluids, as they are all dehydrated; unconscious from the gas.
Annie looks like herself, maybe a bit gaunt, but recognizable. Peeta is thin, so thin and covered in bruises. Johanna’s head has been shaved, cheeks hollow and ribs showing. Y/N tosses off her helmet, running both hands over her face.
“Soldier.” Boggs puts a hand to her shoulder. “You did good. We accomplished our goal. Now we can all go home.”
Y/N nods, blinking away tears.
“Take a breather, there’s a separate compartment through there,” he motions to the rear doors. “He’ll need you when he comes to.”
Peeta does not wake for some time, beginning to struggle at his bindings. No, he realizes, it’s not a binding that holds him. It’s a hand. Just one wrapped loosely around his.
It feels familiar, soft. Someone he knew once, it smells of artificial air. She is warm, the space around her is warm, gentle and kind. A second hand strokes his hair, the way he once wished his mother would.
His eyelids begin to flutter open, daring to reveal that he is conscious. If he’s wrong…if it’s not her and they’ve tricked him again, it will be his own fault.
“Peeta,” Y/N says, staring down at him.
He blinks up at her, in the too bright light. His breathing heavy as she tries to move away, to give him space, but he holds her. Squeezing her fingers.
“Peeta, do you know who I am?”
His throat is sore, voice hoarse, from screaming. “Y-yes.”
“Good,” Y/N smiles.
“Where am I?”
“We’re in a hovercraft, on the way to district thirteen.”
Peeta studies her face. There was something…something is missing, something’s wrong. “What happened to the baby?”
“She’s fine.” Y/N assures him. “Keeping her siblings and Haymitch company.”
“You’re all ok?”
Y/N nods, “yeah, honey, we’re all ok. Now we focus on getting you healthy. Ok?”
He doesn’t flee from her touch, only the occasional flinch when he forgets where he is, until she reminds him that he is safe. “You came back for me.”
“Of course I did.”
Y/N leaves him briefly, with the doctors, upon arrival in thirteen. She needs to find Haymitch, tell him she’s ok. And she is running, searching, colliding into him, with such force that they are both sent off balance.
Down to the floor, the dirty, cold floor. But no place has ever felt better. To hold him, for him to hold her and inhale the scent at the crook of his neck.
“Never again.” He pleads, massaging the back of her scalp, like he does when she’s falling asleep. “Never do that to me again.”
“I’m sorry, Haymitch.” She nuzzles the delicate skin of his throat.
“Don’t make me live in a world where you don’t exist.”
‘All I know is that I cannot die.’

**********************+*****************
She stood in line, waiting for her turn to sign in. She was 18 this year. It was her last year until she could break free and resign death in the hunger games to her mind as simply a fearful memory. The line moved slowly, a few tearful 12 year olds calling for their mothers and fathers ahead of her. She remembered being that age, her first games reaping was a terrifying one as the girl next to her was picked. She could still remember her name “Lilac Hiddleswoft.” The 12 year old girl had died minutes into the 64th hunger games, the boy from 6 had killed her in the cornucopia. She was shaken from her thoughts as she was pushed forward, the peacekeeper at the front of the line pricking her finger and signing her in quickly.
She walked to stand with the other kids her age, admiring the sullen faces of those around her. She walked in line with everyone else, stopping a few spots from the middle of the pack of teens. The morning sun was blindingly hot, the desert breeze of district 2 blew dust into the lungs of its occupants. She looked to the stage, minimalistic with a few chairs and a microphone. She wondered what the escort would wear this year. A new skin color? More jewelry embedded into her skin? Anyway, she thought it seemed silly. Her mother had undergone many “enhancements” she always found them pretty but unnecessary. She liked her body well enough, a few improvements could be made but nothing too drastic.
The mayor and a few important people walked onto the stage, mainly victors with hollow eyes or so many surgeries they looked chronically surprised. She had always thought Enobaria was attractive in her own right….minus the teeth situation. She sat together with Brutus as always on the right side of the stage.
Finally the escort came to the stage, her hair shining rainbow in the heat like an oil slick. Y/N wondered how she had gotten it that color. She would admit the woman was pretty, her dark ebony skin always flawless with the embedded gems next to her completely white eyes. Her name was furisha la’fleur, a nepotism pick from the higher ups in district 2.
Furisha finally spoke after a beat “Hello district 2!” She exclaimed in her sickly sweet voice “happy hunger games!” District 2 was more or less the lapdogs of the capitol, their support ran deep. The crowd cheered and applauded, the sudden noise almost frightening. Furisha spoke again “First we have an exciting video from our capitol and beloved president!” She smiled almost too wide as the screen flickered, playing the same video it played every year. Y/N could quote it by this point, she focused on smoothing out any wrinkles in her dress. The white fabric soft against her fingers.
The video ended with a bang, more applause thundering throughout the town square. Furisha waited a moment for the applause to calm, clapping herself while walking to the spherical bowl to her right. “May the odds be ever in your favor!” She cheered into the microphone. She looked down at the bowl, doing her signature wrist flick “Ladies first!” She announced, reaching into the bowl and stirring her hand around. She soon pulled out a thick card stock, it was tinted grey with gold embossing as an extra flourish.
She read the name and the crowd fell silent, Y/N looked around for the chosen girl. Everyone around her stared, her brows furrowed. “It’s you” the girl beside her tapped her shoulder.
It couldn’t be her, this wasn’t the plan.
Her eyes widened in horror as she was quickly pulled out of line. Two peacekeepers herded her to the stage as she stared ahead blankly. Her ears rang as she walked up the steps next to furisha. Her only hope was a volunteer now, a braver soul. Her hand unconsciously went to hold her necklace, a gift from her step father on her first reaping day. Her stare was blank and hollow, as if she had nothing behind her eyes. Her hands shook and her vision filled with static. She felt like she could pass out and never wake up.
The crowd was silent still as furisha waited a moment for any volunteers. She looked around for her siblings, once she regained herself. a safe face to stare at as the impending doom set in. Nobody spoke up to take her place, furisha gave a simple nod and moved on. Her fate was set and she could do nothing about it. A boy was chosen next, age 12. He was skinny and tall for his age.
He started towards the stage fearfully before a boy shouted from the crowd. “I volunteer as tribute!” Her eyes turned to the voice, an academy boy jogged toward the stage. He was her age, she remembered him from her play group as a child. Finch Glenn was a tall boy, at least twice her size in width. His mop of curly dark hair flicked out of his eyes as he smiled and waved at the crowd. His bronze skin covered in freckles was similar to the rest of district 2, although he was obviously the pick of the litter.
Furisha told them to hold hands as they waved to the crowd and she did as she was told, unlike her companion however she did not smile or scream to the crowd. She simply waved, still in disbelief of her situation.
After a few moments of cheering the peacekeepers finally deemed it enough. They were led into the justice building and into separate rooms. Y/N’s family wasn’t poor but they certainly weren't rich either, she had never seen such fine furniture and decor.
She absentmindedly ran her fingers across the blue velvet couch, the buttons on the cushions were gold and caught her eye. She looked around the room, it was made of dark wood with marble floors. Paintings of different men hung on the wall, peacekeepers? The capitol elite? She had no idea who they were. She walked to a cabinet by the door, a plant sat atop it with luscious green vines hanging the edges. She gently examined one of the leaves, the vibrant green was beautiful.
A knock came from the door and it opened, 4 people rushing inside. All at once her mother and sister were hugging her, the former crying hysterically. They pleaded for her to stay alive, petting her hair and kissing her cheeks. It didn’t feel real, was this really happening?
Her step father stood in the corner of the room, it was clear that he had been crying. Their eyes met and he crumpled into himself a bit. Her mother captured her attention next. “You can be my brave girl can’t you baby?” She asked, talking to her like a small child. She couldn’t blame her mother, she knew the situation must be torture. Her mother had already seen the death of her husband and she couldn’t imagine the dread of losing a child.
Her brother hugged her next “you can win” he whispered simply to her, kissing her cheek for the first time in either of their lives. Her mother clung to her side, just wanting to hold her hand until the end of their time together.
Her stepfather walked to her, a sad smile on his face. “I can’t promise I’ll see you again so I need to tell you this now” he spoke softly “I need you to know how loved you are. You aren’t mine biologically but you’ll always be mine in here.” He pointed to his heart. “Your mother, your brother and sister and I will always be cheering you on. We love you more than anything.” *he said as tears came to his eyes.
He reached around her neck, unclasping the necklace he had once given her and putting it in his pocket. He then brought out a spherical pendant, it looked as if it was made from bronze. He stuck his nail under a small seam and it unfolded, a locket showing all 4 members of her family, her late father and herself. “We might not see you again” he repeated, closing the locket and holding it up to put it around her neck. “But I wanted you to be able to see us” he explained, fastening the clasp. “I had this made in case this ever happened and I’m so sorry you have to be the one to receive it sweetheart.” He said as tears fell from his cheeks.
Her sister let out a small whimper, tears prickling at the corner of her eyes. She was hanging back a bit from the rest of the family as Y/N was saying goodbye, no usual biting comments or banter. “you…. you better come home.” She choked out. she was trying to play off her emotions as usual, “who else am i supposed to fight over dumb stuff with?” She said with a sob. Y/N’s brother hugged her sister tight as she broke down.
Y/N’s family surrounded her, hugging and kissing her. She was determined to stay strong, she knew if she cried now it would only make things worse.
After a few minutes a few peacekeepers arrived at the door, it was time to say goodbye one final time. She kissed her mother’s cheek and hugged her siblings tight. She gave her step father a kiss on the cheek as well and as suddenly as they arrived they were gone.
She broke down seconds after the door closed, sobbing into the cushions of that blue velvet couch. She wanted her mother to come back, she wanted her sister to tell her to “man up” like usual. She sobbed for as long as tears could fall from her eyes and longer.
She had no idea how long she’d been in that room. 15 minutes? An hour? It didn’t matter. She was soon taken out of the room and down a long hallway. Finch joined her quickly and walked with confidence. His goodbye was not one of tears but of encouragement and words like “see you soon.” They set foot outside and were led to a train that would take them to the capitol. It was sleek and silver, just a long tube without any inclination that there were separate cars.
People screamed and cameras flushed as they walked, her senses overwhelmed. Finch waved and preened while she just walked quietly and quickly to the entrance. She stepped on and was in awe, it was beautiful. Crystal chandeliers glittered and food was spread over the redwood table in the center of the car.
She walked in further, Furisha sat in one of the chairs chatting with Brutus and Enobaria. They stood up at the entrance of the tributes, smiles on their faces. “Congratulations!” Furisha said in her usual almost condescending manner, Enobaria nodded at her with pity and Brutus simply ignored her in favor of Finch.
She was ushered to sit down, food being placed in front of her. “Eat, please” Furisha motioned. “You’ll need your strength for the games” she smiled. Finch dug in immediately and she grabbed a fork. This food was frivolously and immaculately decorated but delicious nonetheless. She ate her fill of the pasta in front of her, the sauce was purple and the noodles were green. It tasted of chicken and some sort of seasoning she couldn’t quite describe. It was cheesy and rich with a few leaves of spinach sprinkled throughout.
She sat back when she had finished, the table was filled with chatter. She listened a bit but soon grew tired of the unimportant conversation about the wig Furisha wanted to wear to the tributes parade. “could I be excused to go to bed please?” She interjected at a moment of silence. Furisha smiled and motioned for an avox to lead her to her room. “Of course you can, my darling” she replied, “but meet here in the dining room so you can strategize in the morning alright? We have a schedule to keep.” She requested. Y/N nodded quickly, standing and looking at the awaiting avox.
He led her to a large room, so large in fact that she wondered if it took up a whole car. The bed was covered in pillows and blankets, a canopy of thin silk like material covering it. The avox opened the closet, setting a black fluffy towel on the dresser in front of her. She presumed this meant he was asking if she wanted to shower. “Yes please” she answered softly, earning a nod from the man. He led her to the bathroom, it was made of sleek pink marble with bronze metal used for any trimmings. She took the towel in her arms and the man bowed at the door, closing it and leaving her alone once more. She took her shoes off, the heels clicking together as she picked them up off the floor and set them on the shelf by the door.
Next she unzipped her dress, stepping out of it and hanging it up neatly before stripping the rest of her underthings as well. She looked at the shower before her curiously, it was operated by a panel of buttons instead of a dial. She pressed a button, selecting hot water and a mode that reminded her of the monsoon rains back home. Stepping in she instantly relaxed as she felt the boiling water, closing her eyes she stood under the spray and took a moment to breathe. The water burned her skin in a comforting way, she smiled to herself as she enjoyed the small luxury.
She took her time, washing her hair with the expensive shampoos and conditioners and choosing the scent of peaches to scrub her body. After she was satisfied she stepped out, wrapping herself in the warm embrace of the towel she was given. She looked in the mirror pondering momentarily that it had no fog before it lit up with options.
“Electric hair dryer?” She said aloud to herself, touching the option. Immediately a small current of electricity flowed through her arm, drying her hair into a silky smooth texture. She smiled as she marveled at the technology, touching another option that popped out a small mouth guard that would supposedly brush her teeth.
A moment later she deemed she had truly enjoyed what used to be a simple bathing experience, walking out to the room she was provided in her towel. She saw a new outfit laying on the covers of the bed, black Satin pajamas, new underwear and thick socks. She ran her fingers over the fabric for a moment before putting the outfit on, it was incredibly comfortable.
She climbed into the impossibly soft bed, swaddled in warmth. She was physically the most comfortable she had ever been, but that didn’t stop the thoughts from racing around her head like jabberjays fighting over a worm. She picked up the remote from the nightstand, dimming the lights. she also pressed a button that had a cricket on it out of curiosity, the sound immediately playing quietly throughout her room along with wind and the sounds of swaying foliage.
Somehow that night she managed to sleep, the exhaustion and excitement of the day lulled her to unconsciousness.
The next morning she awoke early, sliding out of the bed and tidying it up out of habit. She was exhausted but sleep avoided her grasp for any longer, the stress making it impossible. After a few moments of trying to perfect the messy covers she padded over to the large closet. The small room was full of elegant and colorful clothes, she ran her hand across one of the racks and admired the different styles.
She chose a comfortable forest green sweater with gold buttons and wide leg black pants, she slid on comfortable ballet shoes before deciding she looked well enough to go to breakfast. She grabbed the mouth guard-like device and let it brush her teeth before fluffing her hair in the mirror. The door to her room slid open automatically as she stepped up to it.
She walked down the long hallway to the dining room car, her hands wringing themselves together anxiously. Brutus sat in the car alone, sipping a steaming mug. “Oh it’s you” he muttered as he noticed her presence “I didn’t expect you to be up this early” he remarked as She stood awkwardly in the doorway “I can come back later if you want” she offered, uneasy at the thought of disturbing him. He had always made her a bit nervous, his gaze was sharp and unsettling.
He shook his head “No it’s ok, come sit” he motioned to the soft plush chairs around him “coffee?” He asked, setting his cup down. She shook her head, Her mother had let her have coffee a few times during celebrations but she had never liked the taste, it was definitely acquired. “It’s not my thing” she said as she walked across the car, sitting a few seats away from him. “I’ve never been able to get over how bitter it is.” she recalled, her nose scrunching a bit at the memory.
He gave a small chuckle, picking up a tablet and pressing a few buttons. “Do you like chocolate?” He asked as he presumably ordered a drink for her on the device. She nodded her head, she had had it a few times but it wasn’t a staple in her home. “You’ll like this then” he concluded as he set the device down again, looking at her once more.
She shifted uncomfortably under his gaze. “You’re pretty” he observed “you look like you might be quick too” he said while studying her. “Can you run fast?” She was a bit taken aback by the question but quickly replied “I-I think I’m average” she stuttered out. He narrowed his eyes at the reply “what weapons have you trained with?” He pried, trying to get a good picture of her strengths “I'm not an academy student” she said, almost embarrassed. she chewed her lip nervously and continued “I have no experience with anything besides helping my mama chop vegetables for dinner”
his head tilted a bit at that point “So long range is better for you” he concluded. “Spears or pitchforks maybe” he sipped his coffee again, sitting back in his chair. “You won’t have to get close to kill, no hand to hand combat.” She didn’t know much about fighting, a few squabbles with her siblings and friends sure but she wasn’t a born killer. The thought of fighting other people scared her a bit, murder was a thing that had never occurred to her to commit.
Soon an avox appeared with a mug of her, the creamy hazelnut colored liquid swirled with cream. It smelled wonderful and she quickly took a sip. It was warm and rich, with a smooth cocoa flavor and a hint of cinnamon that reminded her of home. “Oh my god” she said, a delight present on her face as she sipped. At that exact moment the door slip open and Enobaria sauntered in “you gave her hot chocolate didn’t you?” She smiled as she sat next to her colleague. He nodded with a faint grin and she seemed pleased to watch the young girl enjoy herself.
“How are you feeling today? Are you nervous?” Enobaria asked, she had a commanding presence about her, reminding Y/N of an older sister or that aunt that scares you a bit. Y/N nodded slowly “I’m…..scared” she said softly and Enobaria nodded understandably. “It’ll be a lot I won’t lie-“ she stated, her own coffee being brought to her by a female avox “but as your mentor I’ll be right here with you. I’ll teach you to dismember with the best of them” She said as she smiled, a glint of mischief in her eye.
The morning went by quickly after the interaction with Finch waking up and breakfast being served. They ate their fill in pastries, assorted meats, cheeses and especially hot chocolate. Brutus and Enobaria began their mentorship discussions with their tributes after their meal. They closely studied both their strengths and weaknesses determining what they should and should not do in specific scenarios. Furisha fluttered about the train at the same time, throwing in bits of opinions and comments about decor and manners. Y/N was almost overwhelmed by the time lunch was served, thoughts swirling around her head of strategies and sponsorships. Unfortunately the reward of a break would not be provided.
The train sped into the Capitol, the tall buildings dwarfing the train she had thought was gigantic just moments prior. She was glued to the window taking in the sights around her, the glistening statues and sleek structures she had read about in book. The train soon turned into the station, crowds of people gathered at the platform. Some smiled at her with artificial golden or black teeth while some shouted and screamed.
All she could do was stare at the crowd until a voice interrupted her thoughts. “They’d like you better if you smiled and waved, gotta make a good impression.” She whipped her head around only to see Finch, the broad boy walked up behind her and put his hand on her shoulder, waving and smiling. “I don’t want to be enemies ok?” He told her “We might die in there and it’s better to have a friend” he said looking at her with a soft gaze. He had never been mean, he just knew what he wanted and would do anything to get to his goal even as a child, they didn’t know each other very well anymore but she could tell he was still a kind young man.
“Ok…friends” she agreed quietly, plastering a fake smile on her face to wave to the crowd. She didn’t know him well enough to consider him a friend or anything close but she couldn’t afford to turn him down. There could be a time that the choice between her life and death came to his loyalties to her. She had no idea that playing the game started so much sooner before she went into the arena when she was reaped, a shame she had to learn.
After lunch the two disembarked from the train, the crowds throwing smiles and flowers their way. They were driven to a large building soon after and surrounded by their own separate groups of people. Y/N knew these were the famed stylists, they were notorious for their taste and trend setting. They took her to a cubicle and stripped her clothes, starting their work instantaneously. She was doused in warm water and scrubbed with scratchy fabric and a grainy substance that made her skin feel raw.
“Time for the best part!” One of the so far anonymous stylists said to another. He pulled out what looked like a glob of honey and some paper strips. The hot gooey substance was spread on her legs, it felt strange but kind of good, the warmth sinking into her cold skin. Out of nowhere another stylist placed a sheet of the paper on the goo and ripped it off. She let out a shocked pained noise and the male stylist rolled his eyes. “Lay back and let us wax you ok? Aerith doesn’t like hair on her tributes” he snarked
She decided she hated this man, she gave him a dirty look as he continued to rip the hair from her entire lower half, then including arms and eyebrows. She wondered if Finch was being given the same treatment, probably not. Men were allowed to be hairy or hairless, a fact she despised at the current moment.
She was slathered in thick lotion, her body feeling a bit sticky and her hair was washed once again. They remarked amongst themselves that coming from a district like 2 she shouldn’t have as many split ends as she did. She rolled her eyes at the chatter as her hair was trimmed and dried, they curled it just a bit and then turned their attention to her face. They pinched, rubbed and poked at her; her pores slathered in a mask to make them unnoticeable.
She furrowed her eyebrows in discomfort as they brushed her eyelashes and washed her face. It had been hours when finally at long last the torture was over, she was put in a thin cotton gown and corralled to a darkened room with a steel table. What more could this stylist “Aerith” do to her? She wondered, cringing at the thought of any more preening from the anonymous stylists.
She layed on the table and waited, closing her eyes and listening to the hum of the fluorescent lights above.
After a while she was starting to doze off, the lack of sleep and quiet of the room calming. The door was suddenly flung open, a small woman entering. Her eyes flew open and she sat up, her eyes turning to meet the woman’s gaze. “Oh yes you are a fine piece” the woman said as she walked closer and combed her wrinkled hands through Y/Ns hair.
“Thank you?” Y/N spoke, unsure of what “piece” meant, and still a bit disoriented from the entrance. The woman looked over her face, muttering about her nose and lips before their eyes met. “I am Aerith” the old woman stated, her hand falling to her side. The woman was small in stature, her skin an almost translucent white. She had bright orange hair and lavender bangs, the short curls flipping up at the nape of her neck. Her long fingernails tickled Y/Ns skin as she let them follow the lines of her neck, her unsettling yellow eyes lighting up with a smile.
“I am here to make sure you make the best impression possible and can get as many sponsors as it takes to win these games.” She smiled almost eerily “you’ll make a beautiful impression my pet, if everyone in panem doesn’t want to kill you, be you or sleep with you by the end of this week I haven’t done my job.”
Y/N gave her a bewildered look, this old woman wanted people to think that?
She didn’t have the time to ponder long as Aerith took her hand with a grin “Let's start” she stated.
She was fitted into many outfits, The dresses, suits, rompers and leotards tight on her body to show off what Aerith called “assets.” She was exhausted by the conclusion of the never ending fashion show. Her skin chafed from the sequins and gems on the garments. Luckily her outfits were finally chosen and she could be taken to her temporary home to rest. She spotted Finch as she was escorted to the car, he looked good. His hair was a bit shorter, his face clean shaven and his eyebrows plucked to perfection.
“They got to you too huh?” She asked jokingly to which he laughed “It was horrible” he remarked “I thought my skin was gonna fall off when they scrubbed me with that sugary stuff” he laughed. She grimaced “that’s all? They tore all the hair off my body except on my head!” She exclaimed and he recoiled. “Uh god that sounds awful!”
The ride back was mostly silent, Furisha meeting them as they pulled up to what they where told was the “tribute quarters.”
“You two look wonderful!” She chirped, her stilettos clicking as she motioned for them to follow. A crowd was once again cheering as they walked into the building, held back by peacekeepers. She plastered on her biggest fake smile and blew kisses to the people, walking quickly into the building. Did these people ever sleep? Would it be like this every time she left from now on until she entered the arena?
Finch was right behind her, not stalling like he had before. Y/N could tell he must be a bit tired of the fanfare, she looked back as he waved. The fatigue was evident on his face to her, to the citizens howling in the crowd however? They screamed louder and she could tell they didn’t pay any mind. Furisha led them to the elevator and pushed the button for 2. “You two are so lucky to be here this year, we just got brand new heated floors!” She cheered excitedly.
Y/N couldn’t wait to eat and get to bed, this woman was beyond exhausting. Y/N knew she meant well but the constant cheery behavior was a lot to put up with. The elevator soon stopped and revealed an oddly decorated room. The chairs looked like they were made of children’s building blocks and the couch had a strange plush roof on it.
Furisha told them they could go to their rooms or explore until dinner, their stylists would be joining them. Y/N almost groaned when she heard the statement. Aerith was not exactly the most warm and cuddly person. She wished she could have someone to talk to, she missed whispering jokes to her brother at the dinner table and the way her sister would pick out her clothes because she had “bad tastes”
She was shown to her new room by an avox, a dinner outfit already in her arms. It was a simple black dress, long enough to reach her knees with tulle sleeves. She asked politely for the mute woman to place the dress on the chair by the vanity in the room. The woman nodded, draping the dress over the chair and bowing before leaving the room.
She flopped onto the plush bed face first, sighing and contemplating what to do until dinner. She looked around the room she occupied. The walls were a red oxide color, a common color in her district. The bedspread and sheets were black and all of the metal in the room was gold. She looked to the window in the room, watching the people walk around outside. She wondered if she could be seen but quickly realized she definitely could not. She spotted a remote on the nightstand, a small smile coming to her face. She plucked it off the table and looked at the buttons like the night before. She pressed one and the window suddenly changed to a cityscape, another and she saw the forest. She grinned wider as she fiddled with the small electronic, nearly dropping it as the scene changed to a desert plane. Her heart jumped as she heard the familiar sounds of soft winds and animals skittering.
A knock sounded on her door a moment later. “Come in!” She said loudly, sitting up on the bed and pressing the button to turn the window back to normal. She willed the tears away from her eyes and pushed the homesickness down in her stomach. The Cotton gown she wore bunched up around her knees as she sat and watched the door open.
Finch poked his head in and waved “Hey” he said simply. She offered a small smile “Hi” she said in return.“Wanna come explore the bookshelves before dinner?” He asked, opening the door wider, revealing his dress shirt and black slacks. She nodded and stood, brushing her hair out of her eyes. “gimme a second to change and I’ll meet you by the freaky couch” she affirmed as she walked to pick up the dress that lay in waiting. He smiled wider and gave her a thumbs up, closing the door again.
She quickly changed into the black dress, the sleeves were a bit itchy but otherwise it was quite comfortable. She put a black headband in her hair that had been sitting on the vanity, assuming it went with the dress. Looking down at her feet she wiggled her toes, searching through one of the drawers and finding a pair of black ankle socks. She took the cotton gown she had been wearing and draped it on the bed. With how much she was attended to she was sure it would probably be gone by the time she returned.
The door slid open upon her approach and she walked into the living room area, the lights outside the window sparkling like stars. She spotted Finch lounging on the strange couch, giggling to herself. “You look like a villain in a book” she remarked with a small smile “but I think that couch would do that to anyone” she chuckled.
He laughed loudly, standing to meet her. “Better not say that to Brutus” he whispered teasingly and she smiled again. “Because it’s kinda true” He smiled as she laughed. He led her to a few large bookshelves that were filled to the brim. Cloth bound and leather books lined the shelves with different titles shown on the spines.
She traced her fingers across the spines, looking up at the large shelves. She had never seen so many fine books, district 2 had books yes but many were tattered or dirty. Finch looked to where her gaze had settled, speaking quietly “they’re pretty huh?” He observed. She stood on her toes, reaching for a book she recognized. Her fingers grazed the leather of the green spine and she hopped to reach it. Suddenly she was up in the air, face to face with the book. She let out a startled noise, looking down and seeing Finch. He smiled as he held her on his bicep and she stared at him with wide eyes.
“What are you doing?” She asked, astonished at his strength. She hadn’t had someone pick her up so easily in a while. “You looked like you needed a hand” he stated simply, motioning at the book. She grabbed the book quickly, looking back down at his smiling face. He set her down as gently as he scooped her up, taking care to make sure she was steady on her feet.
“What is it?” He asked, his fingers barely brushing the book she held. She showed him the title “ Edible plants and where to find them.” It read in gold embossed cursive writing, little flowers and leafy greens surrounding it. “My siblings and I studied this in school” she started “we all had the same teacher and she taught us where to find a few things” she said, a soft smile on her features from the memory.
“Read it to me?” He requested, nodding his head to the strange shaped couch. She looked over and thought for a moment, was this him trying to be her friend? Trying to be an ally? It didn’t matter, she needed a small comfort in this place. She walked to the couch and sat, opening the book and looking at the pictures.
The two read for a few moments, discussing their favorite spices, fruits and vegetables from home. They discovered how much they had in common, they both loved summer fruits and how the plum trees would bloom in spring.
Soon enough Furisha called them for dinner, they were served a chicken dish on a bed of rice. It was smothered in a spicy red sauce and had just the right amount of herbs. The sides where just as immaculate, a mix of salads and sautéed vegetables. Furisha explained the next day’s schedule over dinner, the tribute parade and their first opportunity for sponsorship. Y/N felt nervousness bubble up in her chest. The thought of so many people watching her was exciting and terrifying simultaneously.
Dessert was served while the conversation progressed, a chocolate cake with fruit and vanilla ice cream. Y/N felt goosebumps when the sweetness hit her taste buds. Finch groaned in delight at the flavor and they looked at eachother with small smiles. Furisha clapped rapidly “Oh you two are so cute! I can already see how great the alliance will be in the arena!” She chirped. The comment made the two teens frown, they silently ate their sweet treat.
The stylists talked with furisha for a while after that, talking about what looks the two would wear the next day. They planned their hair and makeup, their entrances and everything in between.
The tributes were sent to bed early that night, told they “had a big day tomorrow” as they were handed off to avoxes and sent to their rooms after dinner. Y/N was glad to be allowed a bit of silence, she took the book to her room stealthy. A set of silk pajamas was laid out for her, thick socks on the side.
She changed out of her dinner dress and got into bed, setting the window screen to the desert scene. She snuggled into the soft bed and cracked open the book, soon falling into sleep with the pages open on her lap.

hey! I was wondering if you could write peeta mellark with prompt 6 (fluff)? thank you!!!
my sweetest - peeta mellark x reader
warnings: no use of YN
all of my works are poc friendly
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
The soft glow of dawn painted the room with a delicate palette of colors, and I stirred in the warmth of Peeta's embrace. I found myself wrapped in the quiet sanctuary of our shared space.
Peeta's steady breaths and the rhythmic beating of his heart provided a soothing backdrop to the morning light filtering through the curtains. As my eyes fluttered open, I realized we were tangled in a comfortable intimacy that transcended the harsh reality.
I shifted slightly, not wanting to disturb the serenity of the moment, and Peeta's arms tightened around me in response. A contented smile graced my lips as I nestled closer, savoring the connection that held us together.
In the soft hush of morning, I couldn't help but voice the unspoken question that lingered in the air.
"Do we really have to get up?" I murmured, my words barely louder than a whisper.
Peeta, still half-asleep, let out a gentle chuckle. His eyes, a shade of blue that mirrored the sky outside, met mine with a warmth that echoed the sunrise.
"Not if we don't want to," he replied, his voice carrying a hint of playfulness.
And so, we lingered in that cocoon of tranquility, wrapped in each other's arms. The morning unfolded in a languid dance of shared laughter, whispered conversations, and stolen kisses—moments that became precious fragments of time, shielding us from the harsh reality awaiting us outside.
As the sun ascended in the sky, casting a golden glow on our entwined forms, I couldn't help but feel a sense of gratitude for this stolen sanctuary. Peeta and I found solace in the simplicity of a morning that belonged to us alone.

Finnick Odair x Reader!Gale’s Sister plzzz
Finnick Odair x Hawthorne!Reader
Summary: Being stuck in District 13 has been nothing but a living hell. Your boyfriend makes it more bearable for you. Now, your brother on the other hand...
Warnings/Tags: Finnick Odair x Reader Established relationship (romantic), Gale Hawthorne x Reader (Platonic),
A/N: Requests are open! PLEASE reblog if you enjoyed this story and want to see more like it!
----------------------------------------------------------
Gale had been miserable every second you spent with your boyfriend, Finnick. The PDA and the looks you gave each other made him crazy.
His older sister should not date so soon after all of that trauma. Gale told himself that he just didn't want his sister to date any guy. But, deep down he knew it was most likely due to the fact that he was still on love with Katniss.
You walked down the hall, hands clasped with Finnick's. The two of you were separate very little. Not that there was anywhere to go if you did separate.
The base was extremely cramped. So many people had escaped the grasp of the Capitol. So many refugees.
"Your brother isn't going to kill me?" Finnick asked. He was only half joking. He knew Gale was good with a bow, and well, the looks Gale gave Finnick made Finnick's heart almost stop.
"No, or at least I asked him not to." Finnick gave you a gentle shove. He knew you were most likely joking.
"Don't worry, I'll protect you," you say and take a seat at your usual table with a few of the other people from your district and make shift friend group.
"Yn," Gale says getting your attention, "Katniss and I were cleared to go outside for hunting. Maybe you would like to join us tomorrow?" Gale asked. He couldn't bear to be out there either her alone anymore. It was quite obvious she would never love him back. She loved Peeta.
"Someone has to show you how it's done," you say attempting to get a little crack of laughter out of Gale's stone cold soul.
He was like a snowman. Ice cold.
Gale used to have life in him. But once he lost Katniss you lost Gale. He wasn't the same without his best friend.
----------------------------------------------------------
Finnick's head was buried in I'm the crook of your neck. It was finally lights out and he couldn't wait to cuddle up next to you for the night.
Even though the whole situation really did suck, at least he had you. Even if your brother wanted him dead.
"Goodnight my love," you whisper as Finnick begins to doze off for the night.
His breathes are soft as he whispers, "I love you to sweetheart."
His head is reburied in the crook of your neck, and you feel his soft breaths tickle your neck. He looked so peaceful like this
Half asleep without a care in the world. His soft locks of hair framed his face with utter perfection. He looked beautiful all the time, but words couldn't describe how he looked when he was sleeping.
He looked peaceful.

The weather this past week has been nothing short of hot and miserable. No matter where you go, or how many layers you take off, you can’t escape the heat, much less the humidity. After being out here so long, you think you would’ve learned that, but you can’t help hoping this year’s going to be different.
It’s summer again.
You used to like the summertime, and spring too. You liked the way the world around you would slowly come back to life after a particularly harsh winter. The barren trees sudden were full and green, the flowers opening up to blossom, and warm rain on cool nights.
Every summer, you would go somewhere new between school years. You’d take programs to learn during the months you had off from college. They were great opportunities, you could furthen your research, while also learning a new culture and exploring a country you wouldn’t have imagined going to otherwise.
It was hard to like it the first time you did it, but by the time you got back home in Panem, you couldn’t help wanting to go across the ocean again. You missed it, the life you left. So, the following year you reapplied with friends, and you kept doing it until the accident happened.
Well, it’s safe to say you won’t be traveling ever again.
You adjust the handmade bag on your shoulder, swinging it further back to slip through a shortcut you’ve started to imprint off of this path. The original path is nice if you’re trying to go to the other side of the island, but you’re looking for the beach nearby.
It would probably be easier if you ripped up the plants. You don’t have the energy to do that, though. You’d rather they learned naturally after being trampled on a couple hundred times. You have been walking down this area more often, and it’s because there’s been a sudden influx of driftwood, which you’ve been in need of.
You could always try to take down trees, the issue is that it’s time consuming without a useful weapon. You have large rocks that have taken you weeks, if not months, to sharpen to use to descale fish efficiently. You’ll be damned if you dull it—or worse, break it—from swinging it into tree bark.
With the beach in sight, you begin to pull your bag off to set in the shade to keep your water from becoming warm. The second you step foot into the treeline, you stop to stare at what’s on the beach, laying between sand and water.
It’s a person, a man, actually. He’s got blonde hair that’s sticking to the top of his head and his neck. A shredded white shirt, torn black slacks, he’s miraculously still got both his shoes on. He’s pale, his lips are a gentle shade of blue, you watch as his chest rises and falls.
He’s alive.
You move forward, brushing the hair out of your face to get a better look at the boy that’s washed up on the beach. In all your years of being here, you’ve never come across another person, or had one show up at your doorstep.
Just by looking at him, you can see that he’s begun to get sunburnt. There’s no telling how long he could’ve been out here for. The redness on his skin is a pretty telling sign that it’s been a good few hours, as early as this afternoon. Despite this, he’s cold from being in the ocean water.
You reach for his wrists, which are slippery and difficult to get a good hand on, but you squeeze tightly anyway. You try to use the sand as leverage to pull him, because he’s certainly twice your body weight, judging by how tall he is.
It takes several tries to get him through the sand, with it being so resistant against you dragging him. Once he’s in the shade, you don’t care nearly as much. You lay his arms back at his sides, standing over him to get a better look, as if you’ll be able to recognize him.
He could be anyone, from anywhere. There’s a good possibility, he won’t even speak your language, and that’s assuming he’s going to wake up after inhaling that much water. Still, you’re not going to leave his side, not until you’re sure he’s going to be okay.
Besides, he could be someone important for all you know. He’s dressed well, leading you to believe he could have money, or people that care about him. Really, it doesn’t matter to you, as long as he has a chance of getting you out of here. You’ll do anything to leave this island.
You take the bag off your shoulder, setting it down next to a rock. You climb on top of said rock, reaching to grab the fork of a tree, pulling yourself between. You climb a few feet up, until you’re able to reach one of the branches that hold the large leaves.
You fold it in half, placing it between your lips, and carefully make your way back down to solid ground. You’ve gotten fairly good at climbing trees. If you can’t take one down, you’ll sure as hell climb up to snap off a branch you’ve been eyeing. There’s been a few times where you’ve hung from a stubborn branch and almost broke your ankle from the height you’ve fallen from.
When you’ve gotten back to the rock, you sit down and fold the leaf to make a fan, which you use on you for the first couple of minutes, before turning it to the man on the ground. The color has already begun to return to his lips, by the time he wakes, he might even be dry and sweating. It’s funny how boiling heat works like that.
You sit there for easily an hour, watching the waves roll onto the beach, retreating, and coming back a couple seconds later. You periodically check on the boy, making sure that he’s still breathing. There’s a few cuts that you’ve noticed, between his chest and his legs, there’s about six. They’re fairly shallow, should be an easy heal. You don’t think any of them need to be stitched, which you’re thankful for, because you definitely don’t have the supplies for that.
You look down to check on him again, and find a wide pair of eyes watching you. You pull the fan back, offering a smile, which vanishes quickly because that’s not exactly the right move. He’s got to be confused and scared, a random girl fanning him with a tree leaf isn’t exactly what you’d like to see after waking up damp and covered in sand.
“Hi,” You murmur, moving back on the rock. “Sorry, I was trying to keep you cool. That sunburn’s going to be a pain.”
His face twists, he moves to sit up. He doesn’t speak to you, reaching to touch his chest, wincing when he sticks his finger in a cut. He eyes the holes in the shirt, glancing at you briefly.
“I didn’t do that, if that’s what you’re thinking.” You tell him. “You showed up like that. All I did was pull you out of the water.”
He ignores you, looking at the trees, then at the beach, and then out to the water, which he doesn’t tear his eyes from for a long minute. “Where—“ his voice is hoarse, he clears his throat. “Where am I?”
“You’re on an island.” You reach for your bag, getting to your feet.
“What time is it?”
You make a face, “I can’t answer that. I don’t know what day, month, or year it even is. It’s been a while since I had access to that type of information.” You open the bag, pulling out your canister of clean drinking water. “Here, drink, you’re probably dehydrated. There’s no telling how long you’ve been out there.”
“No,” his face twists, shaking his head. “No, I don’t know who you are.”
“It’s the only drinkable water on the island.” You tell him, tucking it back into your bag. “But suit yourself, you’ll become thirsty soon enough.”
He doesn’t make any move to get up, you press your lips together. You don’t want to stand here all day, and he’s being resistant. You’ve got other plans, which include checking the traps on the west side of the island before the sun goes down.
You click your tongue, which is partially by accident, as you turn around to head into the trees to go back to base.
“Where are you going?” He calls behind you.
“Home, I came out here for driftwood, and you’re afraid of strangers.” You look at him through the trees. “You can follow, if you want. I don’t bite. Just watch where you step, there’s traps around for the animals.”
This inspires him enough to get up. You lead the way through the narrow path, that you’ll force to grow wider in time. Or maybe the boy behind you will, considering the fact that he’s trampling through the area without a care about noise.
You glance at him over your shoulder, curious to see if he’s purposely stepping on everything that he can, and find that it’s the way he walks. He looks like he doesn’t have a single clue that he’s the loudest living thing in here.
“What’s your name?” He asks, not being able to handle the silence.
“(Y/n).” You murmur, not bothering to tell him your last name.
It has no significance anymore. Hell, your name now doesn’t even mean anything to you. The only time you use it is when you’re talking to yourself condescendingly when you’ve done something stupid that could’ve gotten you killed.
It’s quiet for a couple of minutes. “Aren’t you going to ask who I am?”
Oh, you didn’t think about that. “Sure.”
He sighs, “Peeta Mellark.”
Huh, interesting name. You think you knew someone back at the university that had the same name. It’s unique, you didn’t think you’d run across someone with the same name again.
“Are you someone important, Peeta?” You ask.
“Well—I wouldn’t say that.”
“Do you have people that care about you and happen to be rich that could afford pouring money into finding you?”
He doesn’t answer right away. “No, not really.”
You grind your teeth. The first person you’ve seen in years, and he’s not even someone important. You’re never going to get off of this stupid island, are you? You’re going to be stuck here till the day you die, and now you have someone else to take care of.
This could’ve been it. He could’ve been the one thing that got you out of here and back to normal life. You could see your family again, be able to celebrate the holidays. You’d reunite with your boyfriend, even if he did move on from you. You could be with your friends again!
You could really scream right now.
“Why?”
“What?” You snap back, impatient.
“Why were you asking?” He asks, not paying any mind to your tone.
“You’re stuck here with me.”
“What?” He asks.
“You’re never getting off of this island. The sooner you accept that, the better. I can’t believe I just got my own hopes up. I should know better.” You mutter, shaking your head.
When you don’t hear him walking behind you, you stop to turn around. Peeta’s face is screwed, the corners of his mouth turned downward. “That’s not true.”
“I’m not going to lie to you, Peeta.”
“We can light a fire on the beach, they’ll see the smoke. They’ll come looking for us.”
“You don’t think I haven’t tried that?” You ask him. “I’ve done all of it. I didn’t get rescued, why should I think that it’ll be any different for you?”
His lips part, “How long have you been out here?”
You shrug, “Three years, possibly more. I’m not sure. I don’t have a calendar or a cellphone. I go by the seasons.”
Peeta takes a breath. “(Y/n), it’s July, in the year twenty twenty-three.”
Your face smooths over, eyes drifting away from his face while you think back. Your lips are moving, but there are no words coming out, counting silently. When did you get here? What year was it?
“Four years.” You murmur to yourself, turning around to keep walking to your home. “Has it really been that long?”
“What’d you say?” Peeta asks.
“April… no, it was March. It was the end of March going into April, we had an early summer that year because the school year started the beginning of July. They wanted to do construction on the academic buildings before we started getting rain.” You let out a breath. “Four years.”
Peeta’s caught up to your side. “(Y/n), where are you from?”
“I was a university student at Sacred Heart in Capitol City. I was going abroad for a spring program to study in Spain with…” You trail off, pouting.
With your boyfriend and your friends. The ones you told that they had nothing to worry about when they expressed how much they hate flying over open water like this each time you go in the summer. You promised them that dramatic crashes like that only happen in movies or once in a blue moon. It’s not common for planes to malfunction.
You remember being with your boyfriend when one of your friends got stuck in her seat. He told you to get off the plane and he’s find you outside. When you got out there, the current was too strong, the flight attendant couldn’t bring you inside of the boat.
If it weren’t for your life jacket, you would’ve drowned. You’d be dead, there wouldn’t be any life on this island. You still have it, you’ve kept it safe, using it when you fantasize about building a boat and drifting into the ocean, where someone finds you and rescues you.
“You were part of flight 147, weren’t you?” Peeta asks, his enthusiasm showing through. “(Y/n) (L/n).” You blink in surprise at the mention of your full name. When you jerk your head to look at him, he realizes how odd that was of him. “Sorry, I just did a report on you to the company I work for. We went to Sacred Heart together. I knew Gloss.”
“That’s nice.” You swallow. You try not to think about your boyfriends name if you can help it. Peeta does look to be about your age, it’s crazy how you went to school at the same place and now you’ve ended up here together.
“I’m an aeronautical engineer. The plane you were on is still a mystery—“
“Thank you, Peeta.” Your tone is harsh. “I think that’s enough.”
“I’m sorry.” He says. “Really, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean—I reached out to your family while I was doing my research. If it helps any, they’ve still got hope that you’re alive. They just don’t know where to look.”
“And Gloss?” You ask.
“I have no idea.”
You hum, not saying anything else to him for the rest of the walk, which isn’t that far. You can see the shack that’s taken you months to build properly, through the trees. You have a fire pit, but it’s several feet away to keep from accidentally lighting it on fire. It’s happened to you before, and it was devastating.
Needless to say, in the winter it’s brutal. This is why you like the summer,
“This is it.” You tell him, “I have clothes, the luggage showed up before you did. I didn’t think anything of it, it happens once in a while.” You enter the shack, brushing the dried hanging vines out of the way to hang up on a hook by the door. “And I can clean those wounds. If you want to wash yourself of the saltwater first, I understand. I can bring you to the stream. I don’t have soap, of course.”
You turn around, expecting for Peeta to be right behind you, but he’s standing outside of the doorway. Your eyebrows twitch, “What are you, a vampire? You can come inside.”
He lets out a laugh, stepping inside, “Thank you.”
“For what?”
“Your generosity. You don’t know me and yet—“
You wave your hand. “Don’t think about it too much. It’s taken me a long time to get to this point. These are the things I wish I had when I got here.”
Peeta’s quiet for a moment. “Do you really think we’re stuck here?”
“I’d like to hope not.” You tell him. “Even if we are, we can make it work. I’ve gotten fairly good at this.”
He smiles.

Peeta Mellark.
You’d heard his name spoken countless times in your life. Teachers called on him, hoping for an answer. His father confronted him on whether or not the daily tasks for the bakery had been completed. You’d asked him to go on walks with you, to teach you how to bake, and to lay on your backs in your small backyard, staring up at the night sky.
However, when Effie Trinket spoke his name, she wasn’t simply asking for a tribute; She was sentencing him to death.
The walk to the room where the blonde was being held, awaiting the impending trip to The Capitol, felt like it took days. The stares of the other District 12 residents made you feel as if you’d been selected yourself, but in a way, it felt like you had. You knew that the second the cannon fired in the arena and Peeta’s handsome features were shown on screen for the final time, a part of you would go with him. It was inevitable.
As soon as you were ushered behind the heavy wooden doors, you locked eyes with the blonde. He very visibly released a breath that he must not have even realized he’d been holding before stepping forward.
The peacekeeper’s gruff voice from behind you broke your trance, “You have three minutes.”
Tears brimmed behind your lashes. “Peeta…” Your voice cracked and his name exited your lips sounding more like a question, as if you were asking him if this was reality.
“Y/N, it’s going to be okay. I promise.”
You didn’t know whether to finally let those tears fall or to scream and push at him, hoping to knock some sense into him that this was not going to be okay. However, the shakiness in his voice indicated that he might’ve already been aware of this.
“N-No…No, it’s not…it’s never going to be okay again.” The tears began to fall rapidly and your hands covered your face, hoping to shield the boy from a guilt he had no reason to harbor.
With a delicate touch, he reached up and pulled your hands away with his, shushing you gently and pulling you into his body. His arms wrapped around you tightly. The embrace felt like all of his embraces before every reaping since you first began dating at fourteen: finite. Except this time, it was.
“Listen, I need you to stay strong for me, okay? You’re going to be on my mind the entire time I’m in that arena…and you’ll be the last thing I think of before the cannon sounds. I love you. It was never supposed to end this way.”
This time, he looked like he was going to dissolve into his own tears that he was quite obviously fighting back. You reached up and wiped at your eyes.
“N-No…there’s not going to be any cannons…you have to win.” You tried to force a smile to impact his overall mentality, but his facial expression remained unchanged.
Peeta chuckled, “I can’t make any promises…”
“I love you…” the statement came out weakly, tears falling slowly down your cheeks, “I love you and I need you to come home.”
“Time’s up.”
You both shared one, rushed, final kiss before you felt a strong hand on your back all but jerking you towards the exit, tears streaming down your face.
Little did you know, he would come home, but the version of you who he came home to was vastly different from the one he left behind those big wooden doors on reaping day. You both had been so changed by the games. He’d faced horrors unlike any other and you’d faced a betrayal that hurt worse than any death you could’ve faced fighting alongside him in the arena.
From the stares you got at school and around town to your mother’s now disapproving tone towards the blonde, wishing his demise at every new turn in the games, Peeta’s infamous interview turned your world upside down. You wanted to believe it was all some big scheme for the games, hoping that if they played as lovers, they’d win the favor of the Capitol…but Katniss was also a known loner. He never would truly have a chance to interact with her or engage with her in a way that would not result in him being coldly pushed away if he’d not been forced to compete with and against her.
Who’s to say he hadn’t harbored feelings for her all along knowing that they’d never be requited? Then again, who’s also to say that him mentioning you, his partner of two years, would be enough to bring sympathy and sponsors from the Capitol? You watched the games every single year. There was always at least one sob story about someone who had to get back to a significant other and that never changed their fate in the games.
You looked at yourself in the small mirror on the wall of your home, letting two French braids out of your hair so that they cascaded down in waves. Your head was beginning to hurt right at your left temple, a feeling you’d grown too accustomed to over the time frame of the games. Between the headaches, sleepless nights, and tears, the mental gymnastics every move Peeta made in the game had taken its toll on you.
“I cannot believe you’re still going to see him. He embarrassed you. He made a fool out of you in front of the entire country, but especially in our District and you’re still going to see him.” your mother looked up from some sewing she was doing right as soon as you dropped to your knees beside your bed and pulled out a box. On top of some pictures of you and Peeta, drawings he’d given you, dried flowers, and a variety of other things you’d collected throughout your relationship was a letter simply addressed with his name. You picked it up and tucked it away in your bag, shaking your head at your mother’s comments.
“I…have to. I have to just…get closure. I can’t move on if I don’t just…figure this all out in my head.” Your hand played with the strap of your bag as your mother shrugged in your direction, still mumbling under her breath as you exited your home and started towards Victor’s Village.
Part of you wanted to see him just to make it concrete in your head that he was alive because part of you doubted the allowance of two victors in the games. The other part of you wanted to avoid him at all costs so you never had to face the conversation to come, which could lead to you losing the love of your young life.
You made your way up the cobblestone road, your eyes fixed down strictly out of nerves. You admired the different stones under your feet as you headed on, only glancing up when you realized you needed to identify which house belonged to Peeta. You knew which home belonged to Haymitch, but there were lights on in two other houses. You surveyed their appearances until you observed a barely noticeable billow of smoke coming out of the chimney, perhaps from an oven.
You walked up to the front porch of this home and knocked gently, your hands quickly flying back to the strap of your bag, twisting it back and forth as you waited.
A brunette answered the door, looking perplexed as to why you were standing there. You took in her harsh stare, her side braid, and the wound on her forehead and took a hard swallow.
“Oh…” Your eyes fell to the ground again.
“Can I help you?” Katniss asked. Her tone wasn’t as harsh as the way she’d been eyeing you. She sounded confused and you didn’t blame her.
A laugh sounded from behind her, causing you to look back up and over her shoulder. Haymitch Abernathy stood off in the distance, taking a swig from a longneck bottle, shaking his head.
“H/C hair, E/C eyes…this is the real game right here.” He took another sip, “I’ve been interested in this since the train home.”
“What the hell are you talking about, Haymitch?” Katniss asked, looking from you to Haymitch and then back to you.
“That’s Lover Boy’s real lady.”
“Oh my god…”
“Is…”
“Wrong house…” Katniss took a hard swallow herself, looking rather uncomfortable. She opened her mouth to speak a few times, but then ultimately decided not to. “Can you just…give him this…please?” You reached into your bag and withdrew the piece of paper that you’d spent many long nights pouring into since the night of the interview.
“Uh, sure, but he lives…” she began to gesture with the piece of paper, but you turned and walked away, arms wrapped around your midsection as you felt your chest begin to tighten and a lump began to form in your throat.
You heard Haymitch call something out from behind you as you picked up your pace and exited Victor’s Village. You felt stupid. You should’ve just gone next door and either given Peeta a piece of your mind, tried to talk this whole situation out, or just slid the letter in the mail slot on the door and continued on home.
Who knows if Katniss will ever actually give him that letter, especially if she’s harboring some kind of feelings towards him that she wants to make sure stays locked down. You let out a long sigh and then quickly changed your direction. You weren’t ready to go home and face the cruel commentary your mother would spew the second you stepped onto the threshold of the house.
Instead, you went to your backyard, staying out of the way of the windows so that you couldn’t be seen. You sat your bag on the ground and stared up at the sky. The sun was just starting to set and it was turning the beautiful shade of orange that Peeta loved and would try to capture with his paints. The lone thought caused your chest to ache and tears to well up in your eyes again. Except this time, you allowed them to fall.
As you looked up into that orange sky, you began to recite the letter to yourself internally despite the thoughts being placed out in the open the second you turned the piece of paper over into Katniss’ hand.
Peeta,
I don’t know what to say. I needed you to come home, but not like this. I’m glad you’re alive. I will always be glad that you’re alive, but why her? You looked at Flickerman and thought before you spoke. You could’ve talked about me and you didn’t. Maybe it was a strategy. Maybe you took this as your chance to finally address feelings you’d harbored for Katniss. I don’t know, and I guess I’ll never know. Regardless of what the reason is, I want you to be as happy as you can be as a victor coming out of the games and if that’s with Katniss, then it’s with Katniss. I’ve never been one to care about the opinions of others, but when you have grown adults making fun of the fact that your boyfriend left you the second he could and commenting in passing about how you left and then used the games as a matchmaking service…I’d look like a fool to ever be seen holding your hand in public again, even if I want nothing more than to do just that.
I will forever be proud of you for what you accomplished. You fought so well and demonstrated your abilities physically, artistically, and mentally in the arena, but what you said in your interview was so shortsighted and rash that I don’t feel it’s something you and I can come back from. I don’t know if I’d ever be able to lay next to you again without wondering what was truly going on in your head in those few seconds of hesitation before you began to profess your love to Katniss.
I love you, Peeta and I will always love you…and I thought you loved me. I just hope that you don’t harbor any negative feelings towards me when you read this. Know that this was not a sudden decision and that it took the entirety of the games to finish because it was something I never thought I’d write. I hope that when you think of the time we spent together, it’s a positive memory and that you can hold them near and dear to you even though Katniss is now in your life. I know that happiness, for me, will at least for now be laying under the stars with you and dreaming of a day that we don’t have to worry about our names being pulled out of those bowls. You’d tell me how beautiful my eyes were and how you never wanted the sun to come up so you could stay in that particular moment forever. You will always be my first love and there will always be a place for you in my heart. I hope your future is as safe and as happy as you dreamed it would be.
Yours,
Y/N
You didn’t even know at what point that you’d began to cry even harder. All you knew was that you could feel a draft on your face and the moisture had dripped onto the top of your shirt. You’d started grieving him the night of the reaping, fearing he would not return. However, the actual grieving process began the night of the interview, knowing that even if he returned, he may never actually return to you. Everything had only begun to come to a head in the grass that night as the sun went down behind Sherbert skies and the void of the night sky took over your vision.
You were so lost in thought that you didn’t hear footsteps coming up from your left side. It was only when you heard a familiar voice say your name that you sat up and turned around, a delayed gasp escaping your lips.
“Peeta?!” You looked at him and took him in in the virtually non-existent light. You couldn’t make out much about his appearance aside from his white shirt and the familiar piece of white paper in his hand.
“I…I…” he looked unsettled, scared even, “I can explain everything, but not here.”
“What?”
“Meet me back in Victor’s Village in an hour. Don’t let anyone see you.”
Something in his tone made your anxiety spike. Your heart was pounding and your stomach was turning. Whatever was happening was not good.
You hesitated before agreeing to meet him, watching as he turned and headed back in the opposite direction. You walked back around the front and entered your house.
“So, what pathetic excuse did he give you?” your mother asked.
You shrugged, “He wasn’t home. Haymitch said he’d be back in a little while, so I’m going to go back…”
“This is entirely too much effort for the boy that just decided to throw away two years with you on television.”
“He…”
You fell quiet. You couldn’t even think of any explanation for Peeta’s behavior, but you hoped to have one soon. You walked back to Victor’s Village around forty-five minutes later, your heart pounding in your chest. What had him acting so timid and scared? This wasn’t like him at all.
You stepped up on his front porch and knocked on the door only for him to answer it almost immediately and let you inside.
“Peeta, what the hell is going on?” You couldn’t stop the thought from coming out. You were truly at wit's end and you just wanted answers. Your eyes fell on the boy. His face crumbled slightly.
“I…We…” he looked away, staring at the floor and then back up at you, “We can’t be together anymore. I’m so sorry.”
You sighed, your throat feeling tight again, “I…I figured, but…like…were you always interested in Katniss or?”
He shook his head, “I was never interested in Katniss. I’m not interested in her now. Y/N, I’m in love with you. I want you so fucking bad, but, I can’t…they’ll…they’ll hurt you. If they found out it’s all a lie, we’d all die.”
You stepped closer to the blonde as his face flushed and tears began to spill from the corners of his eyes, “Peeta, baby, what are you talking about?”
You reached up to wipe his tears and he leaned into your touch ever-so-slightly, “I lied about Katniss because I wanted to gain us sponsors and I just… wanted to try and get out of there…and we did, but Katniss told me that the Capitol is suspicious of us and that if we’re not selling this…we’re going to die and if I stay with you and get caught…they’ll just kill you to get you out of the way. It’s not safe for you to be around me anymore. I love you and I’d never forgive myself if something happened to you.”
You took a hard swallow as you tried to process what he was saying. He was now trapped in a fake relationship with Katniss or else the Capitol is going to kill the both of them and possibly anyone they love. You tried to find words, but there were none. What is there to say to that?
“I’m so sorry. I fucked up and I’m so fucking sorry.” He reached up and brushed a piece of hair out of your eyes.
“You…didn’t. You did what you had to to survive. You kept your promise to me…” You said softly, your voice still shaking through each word, “It was just..never supposed to end like this.”
“I know.” He said solemnly, “I wanted to come home, move into this house, and let you come over whenever you wanted until you eventually moved in. I wanted to protect you for the next two years…giving your family bread and money and whatever to keep you from having to put your name in that bowl any more than it has to be. I wanted to marry you…and maybe one day, when it’s safer, we can…but…until then, I can’t risk it. If we keep this up and the Capitol catches wind of it, you’ll be reaped next year, no questions about it.”
“It’s a quarter quell…”
“It doesn’t matter! In my eyes, that makes it even more dangerous because, for all we know, they could eliminate the one male, one female rule and put you and Prim, Katniss’ sister in there.” He was momentarily silent, “I cannot mentor you and then watch you die.”
“We could run…”
“We won’t make it but a little bit past the gate. There’s Peacekeepers everywhere.”
“Then we die together.”
His face grew stern, “I am not watching you die.”
Your bottom lip quivered, “If it’s ever safe again, will you come back to me?”
“There’s no coming back. I will always be yours.” He reached down and took your hands in his, placing a kiss on your knuckles, “But if that time ever comes…then, yeah…I promise…and that’s one I know I can keep.”
“I’m going to miss you forever.” she said, “I never thought that this was how the games would take you from me.”
“I know…but…just don’t forget about me, okay? Even if you move on..”
“I could never forget about you…even if I wanted to…I’d always think about you.”
With that, he leaned in and pressed one last kiss to your lips, pouring the feelings he’d expressed to you countless times over the last two years into it, his hands cupping your face gently as your hands went to his waist. It was the kiss that you should’ve shared after the reaping and the first kiss you’d shared since he’d been home…except this time, the kiss was your last.
It's hard not to find it all a little bittersweet
And lookin' back on all of that, it's nice to believe…

forgive me | peeta mellark
Tumblr media
— "so why did you shut me down?"
↳ peeta mellark x reader x friends x enemies x lovers
↳ warnings : fight in the beggining, mention of abusive relationship, emotions, comfort, swearing, fluff at end
↳ summary : peeta needed you the most after you shut down everyone after your abusive relationship. you shortly became enemies after you hurt him. but, your feelings for him never went away, and neither did his.
↳ a/n : this kinda got me emotional ngl
------------------------------------------------------------
"babe? sorry that i'm late i just went to the market with-"
your words were cut off with a punch to the face.
your body flung to the doorway of the kitchen, back slamming into the wall. you screeched in pain. you pushed up, leaning against the wall. you covered your elbow where you impacted it most.
"were you with fucking peeta again?!" your boyfriend yelled. "cause every-single-god-damn-time yn!!"
"your always with that boy!!" he threw his hands up, "YOU LOVE ME! NOT THAT LITTLE SHIT."
you have had it with your boyfriend jake. he was an abusive piece of shit. any person who ever calls peeta something bad just makes your blood boil. and you dont know why.
you weakly got up, "DONT YOU EVER CALL PEETA THAT YOU ASSHOLE." you shoved his chest.
"AND I DONT LOVE YOU."
jake's face got even angrier, and he started to clench is fist.
"AND GOD." you let out a loud sigh. "IM SO SICK!! SO SICK OF YOU TREATING ME LIKE THIS- LIKE- LIKE SHIT!!"
"OH I TREAT YOU LIKE SHIT?! IM JUST PROTECTING YOU!"
"FROM WHO?! SWEET INNOCENT PEETA?!"
"I SWEAR Y/N IF YOU MENTION HIS FUCKING NAME IM GONNA-" his words were cut off by you kicking his chest, knocking the wind out if him.
"now get out of my fucking house." you spat.
he got up, and opened the door slowly. before he left, he turned to you, still breathing heavily. "were done."
you didnt even care. after all this shit, you deserved to break up with him. you pushed him out and slammed the door. after you turned, and sat against the door.
you just sobbed and sobbed and sobbed for what seemed like forever. the tears were happy and sad at the same time. all that pain you went through. but now that pain is gone.
you took the whole night removing him out of your memory, and trying to cope for a better life.
-----------------
he walked by your house everyday.
every.
day.
sometimes you were at your window, sometimes you weren't. you would just stare out into the woods, wether it was covered in snow or displayed in the sunlight.
he would knock on your door everyday. just the sight of you would make it happy. did he do something to hurt your feelings?
at so many tries, he eventually felt hurt and alone. you were the only person who he enjoyed spending time with, and now you were silent. you were the only person who he cared about.
he hated you. he hated you so much for leaving him when he most needed it. he eventually stopped walking by your house. in fact, he avoided it, and tried to take other paths to the market.
he didn't really know if it was because of him, but it was too late.
he hated you. but that didnt mean that he still didnt love you.
----------------
you knew he was there. the tension was pretty clear. you could see him in the corner of your eye as you looked at the woods.
why did you shut everyone off? especially your best friend, peeta.
you knew why. you were scared that you were going to become like jake, for some reason, and you wanted to isolate yourself so you dont hurt anyone.
you knew that if you told peeta, he would understand. but you were just to scared to see him face to face.
why? you didnt know.
you knew that peeta wasnt jake, but you wanted to distance yourself. maybe jake went into town and told everyone rumors about you. maybe peeta visited everyday to tell you how sick you were.
you still cared for peeta, so very much. but you dont want to harm his pure heart.
-------------
peeta was standing at your door.
he almost knocked. "peeta what the hell are you doing?" he whispered to himself.
he turned his back to your door.
"you hate her. you hate her. why are you here?" he repeated.
he knew why he was here. he loved you. and he also wanted to tell you how he needs you so very much to cope with life, and how you hurted him without even trying.
he turned back and knocked, almost like he himself didnt do it. he just waited there for a solid minute. he turned away, but the door was opened behind him.
he turned back. the tension was tense. you held eye contact together, both of you about to cry. the instant relief that was displayed on your face was so obvious.
the concered face that you saw on peeta everyday out your window was gone. instead, his gaze was soft, and he was smiling.
your smell and presence itself made him so happy. so very happy that you didn't give up on yourself. he really thought he would lose you.
you ran up to him and gave him the tightest hug ever. you wrapped your arms around his neck as he wrapped his arms around your waist.
he layed his head on your shoulder. "i thought i lost you.." he whispered.
you broke a tear.
"oh peeta i would never lose you." you pulled away to face him, "never."
his smile slowly disapeered as he looked at you.
"so why did you shut me down?" his voice quivered, "y/n you- you left me when i most needed you."
your eyes were bloodshot. "i know, and im so sorry."
"but why?" he asked.
you sighed. you looked out to the houses, then back to him. "i was scared that i would be like jake."
"like jake? but i thought you loved him?"
you shook your head. "i never told anyone but he was abusive."
his eyes softened, and his face turned into guilt. his eyes started to water. "oh y/n-" he said between cries.
"why didnt you t-tell me? i wouldve protected you."
with no response, you just hugged him again, this time even tighter. "im so sorry.." you quivered.
"i love you y/n. dont ever leave me like that again." he said.
"i promise peeta. and i love you two."

Moves & Countermoves (Part 15)
Summary: No one ever wins the games, even fourteen years later, Y/N is still playing. Warning: depictions of labor/childbirth and violence/death.
Prologue | One | Two | Three | Four | Five | Six | Seven | Eight | Nine | Ten | Eleven | Twelve | Thirteen | Fourteen
Tumblr media
“Y/N,” Effie all but accosts the woman emerging from the hallway.
“What’s wrong?” Y/N frowns, bewildered by Effie’s urgency.
She is in tears, “it’s Cinna.”
“What happened to Cinna?”
“He’s…he’s dead.”
Again the floor is falling out from beneath her, sinking, never ending. “How?”
“I don’t know, dear.” Effie breathes, it’s all being kept hush.
“I have to-” Haymitch left before Y/N, allowing her to rest. Her eyes are still swollen from the tears, no amount of sleep or makeup will hide it. “Haymitch is waiting for me.” Does he know?
“Of course,” Effie nods, excusing herself.
Y/N moves for the elevator, jamming the call button repeatedly with her finger. It dings upon arrival, moving at a snail’s pace to the ground floor.
The outdoor viewing area is open today. As if nice weather is reason enough for a picnic, while tributes slaughter each other on screen.
Chaff is still alive; hiding, waiting it out.
The current threat is monkey mutts, blood rain and the giant tidal wave; that sends Peeta and Katniss’ alliance to meet up with Johanna, Wiress and Beetee on the beach.
“Johanna?” Finnick spots her first, covered in blood from head to toe. “Johanna.”
“Finnick!”
“Looks like we have more allies,” Peeta remarks.
Y/N finds her husband, near the far wall of the indoor viewing area. He’s easier to spot in a crowd after all these years, the width of his shoulders, the color of his hair.
“Just couldn’t stay away, huh?” He is tired, worn down and unfortunately, the only news she has to share does nothing to help.
“Cinna’s dead.” Y/N whispers, plopping down in the seat beside him.
“Blight hit the forcefield, died on impact. Female morphling sacrificed herself to save Peeta.” Haymitch adds to the death toll.
“Do you think he lied? Plutarch.” That’s what gamemakers do. They lie to get in your head.
“His plan is to get Katniss out. I don’t think he lied about that.” If they keep this alliance going long enough-
“What about Peeta?” What about everyone else?
Can’t protect anyone in an arena. “He’ll be with Katniss.”
“Tick tock,” Wiress says, for what must be the hundredth time. Grabbing Johanna by the forearms to spin her.
“What’s wrong with her?” Katniss asks.
“She’s in shock, dehydration isn’t helping.” Beetee tells Katniss.
“I’ll get her some water.” Gloss takes the spile into the tree line. His back is torn up pretty good from the mutts.
“Tick tock.”
Katniss leads Wiress out into the water. “Let’s get you cleaned up.”
Johanna follows, while Beetee stays closer to shore, winding something on a spool.
“What’s Beetee got there?” Katniss wonders.
“Some kind of coil.” Johanna picks pieces of debris from her axe.
“Did he get it from the cornucopia?”
“Took a knife in the back to get it.”
“Tick tock.” Wiress gasps.
“I can’t,” Johanna holds up a hand in defeat. “Have fun with nuts.”
“Tick tock,” Katniss repeats, though it makes little sense to her. Allowing the water to wash away any blood clinging to Wiress’ hair.
Y/N looks to Haymitch, “tick tock?”
He lifts a shoulder, hell if I know.
Lightening strikes the large tree, at the far end of the arena, twelve times. Almost like- “a clock.” Y/N mutters under her breath, “chimes on a clock.”
“Twelve sections.” Haymitch realizes, “everything stays in its own…the forcefields in between.”
“Oh,” Wiress bobs up from the water. “Tick tock.”
“Tick tock,” Katniss says again, “it’s a clock. Wiress, you’re a genius.”
————————————————————————
With this new knowledge, the alliance heads back to the cornucopia.
“It all starts with the lightening. Then the blood rain, fog and monkeys, that’s the first four hours. At ten, that big wave hits from over there.” Katniss pauses to watch Peeta sketch a crude outline of the arena, with his sword.
“The tail points at twelve,” Peeta adds.
“That’s where the lighting strikes, at noon and midnight.”
“Strikes where?” Beetee asks.
“That big tree.”
Beetee cocks his head to the side, “good.”
“Hickory dickory dock, the mouse ran up the clock,” Wiress is singing softly to herself, beside the water.
Gloss takes a seat beside her to keep watch, smiling kindly. He doesn’t know this song.
“What about the other hours, did you guys see anything?” Cashmere asks Johanna and Beetee, hoping to fill in the other six wedges.
“Nothing but blood.”
“Doesn’t matter,” Peeta moves to stand, “as long as we steer clear of whatever sector’s active, we’ll be safe.”
“Yeah,” Finnick chimes in, “relatively speaking.”
Wiress gasps in surprise, drawing their attention.
Brutus is there with his sword buried in Gloss’ sternum. He had shielded Wiress with his own body. Gloss tumbles into the water. Cannon.
Leaving Wiress dead by Enobaria’s hand. Cannon.
Katniss draws her bow, the other victors now on defense.
Cashmere is lost in a fit of rage, knocking Brutus from the rocks.
The archer lands an arrow in Enobaria’s left arm, the career diving back into the water.
Haymitch scrubs a hand over his face. No time to digest the news as the entire cornucopia begins to spin. What the hell are you doing, Plutarch?
Johanna keeps hold of Katniss for as long as she can, but she is eventually lost to the whirling water.
She’ll drown. Y/N gnaws at the inside of her cheek. She’ll drown while I’m sitting here and all I can do is watch.
The spinning stops, the same way it started; suddenly and without cause. Eventually Katniss is able to kick to the surface, the viewing room cheers.
“Let’s just get what we need and get off the bloody island.” Johanna scowls, patting at Katniss’ back while she hacks up water from her lungs.
————————————————————————
“Besides Brutus and Enobaria, who’s left?” Katniss asks, sifting sand between her fingers.
They are back on the beach now.
“Maybe Chaff,” Peeta offers, “just those three.”
“They know they’re outnumbered, I doubt they’ll attack again.” Finnick reasons, “we’re safe here, on the beach.”
Cashmere hasn’t said a word…not since Gloss.
“So what, we hunt them down?”
“Katniss!” Prim’s howl ends the conversation prematurely. “Katniss, help me!”
“Prim!” Katniss takes off; without back up, or logical thought. Prim is in danger and she needs to save her.
“Katniss, wait.” Peeta chases after her, his leg becoming more irritated with every step. Still he presses on, ignoring it as best he can.
The bird carrying Prim’s scream is shot dead. Jabberjays.
Finnick is the fastest, joining Katniss in the clearing. “Katniss, are you ok?”
“Finnick! Ahhhh!” Annie’s voice draws him deeper into the forest.
“Annie! Annie, where are you?”
Peeta pounds his fist uselessly against the forcefield. They can’t hear him, he can’t hear them.
Katniss and Finnick run back towards the beach, only to realize that they are trapped. Birds wailing all around them. Katniss sees Peeta before she collides with the forcefield.
“It’s ok, it’s ok. They’re just mutts, they’re not real.” Peeta yells, hoping Katniss can make out the words.
She screams, covering her ears, crumpling to the ground. Peeta follows; touching his forehead to the forcefield. They wait for the hour to pass.
Y/N’s lower back is taut, spasming and releasing, stealing the air from her lungs.
Haymitch notices the uncomfortable shifting beside him. “You ok?”
Y/N nods, not trusting her own voice.
Haymitch begins thumbing circles along her spine.
————————————————————————
Word comes from Plutarch, the extraction is happening tonight. A hovercraft commandeered by district thirteen will arrive shortly and they will go. Collecting the remaining victors, under the guise of death.
Beetee’s plan is a good one, it will cause enough of a distraction. Using his wire to conduct electricity from the lighting strike at midnight.
“How do we know the wire’s not gonna burn up?” Johanna demands, leaning heavily against a tree branch.
“Because I invented it,” Beetee looks up at her. “I assure you, it won’t burn up.”
Cashmere stares out at the water. The hovercraft never came to collect Gloss’ body. Did the cornucopia tear it up? Or do they just not care enough to recover it?
Finnick returns to the sea, waiting out the sunset.
Katniss and Peeta find solace in each other, the way they always have.
“I think we need to go.”
“This plan’s gonna work,” Peeta disagrees.
“I think so too,” Katniss whispers. “Once the careers are dead, we all know what happens next. I don’t wanna be the one that shoots first.”
“What if they don’t either? What if all of us refuse to shoot first?”
The gamemakers will send mutts, or perhaps gun them down if they’re feeling impatient. “We might still end up dead.”
“Maybe not,” Peeta lifts a shoulder, “I mean it worked for us last time.”
“They’re not gonna make that mistake again. We both know there’s only one person walking out of here and it’s gonna be one of us.”
“The careers are still out there. I say we stick with these guys till midnight, and if we hear a cannon, we go.”
Katniss nods in agreement.
“Katniss, I don’t know what kind of deals you made with Haymitch, but he made me promises too.”
“Way to throw me under the bus, kid.” Haymitch raises his glass to Peeta before chugging it down.
Y/N just shakes her head. For a man who claims he doesn’t love those kids, he sure does make a lot of deals. With them, for them, doing his damnedest to keep them alive.
When the star crossed lovers kiss, there is no denying it’s real. Katniss loves Peeta, Peeta loves her. Finally she understands, what Y/N had been trying to tell her, that day on the train. Peeta is that person; her best friend, her partner, the one who waits.
“Alright, lovebirds.” Johanna calls them back.
What’s left of the alliance heads to the lighting tree.
————————————————————————-
“You two girls go together now.” Beetee hands Katniss and Johanna the wire. “Unspool it carefully, make sure the entire wire is in the water. Then head to the tree at the two o’clock sector, we’ll meet you there.”
“I’m gonna go with them as a guard.” Peeta insists.
“No,” Beetee’s head snaps toward him. “You’re staying here to protect me…and the tree.”
“No, I need to go with her.” Peeta is not backing down.
“They’re trying to separate them.” Madge realizes, pulling the throw pillow into her lap. The children and her mother are asleep, leaving only her and her father on the couch.
Y/N’s family set up camp in Victor’s Village, providing Everest and Arista some normalcy. In their own house, in their own beds. They are often found in their parent’s room, clinging to pieces they left behind.
“I’m sure there’s a reason.” The mayor shoots his daughter a reassuring smile.
They rarely watch the games together, not since she was a child. Under different circumstances Madge might think their time spent together was nice.
Katniss leaves with Johanna. Staring back at Peeta until the darkness swallows his silhouette.
A few feet later Katniss feels a bit of resistance from the line, tugging lightly. Must be stuck on a rock. “It’s caught on something.”
Brutus cuts the wire, sending the loose end flying back toward Katniss.
Johanna turns on her then, slicing a gash in Katniss’ arm and smearing the blood across her neck. “Stay down.” She tosses her axe at the careers and darts off into the woods.
Katniss pushes herself upright once their footsteps are out of earshot. “Peeta.”
“Johanna,” Finnick comes to check on his friend, after the commotion.
Katniss remains silent, allowing him to pass her by. Gathering her bow, she heads back to the tree.
Cashmere is missing and Peeta is gone. Leaving only Beetee; unconscious and twitching after an ill fated tryst with the conductor.
His spear harbors the evidence, wire still wrapped around it’s blade.
A cannon sounds, symbolizing Chaff’s death.
“Peeta!” Katniss screams.
Finnick sprints back toward the sound, “Katniss, where are you?”
She draws her bow, aimed at Finnick as he returns.
“Remember who the real enemy is.”
Just like Haymitch said…
The artificial storm cloud looms above them, and Katniss knows what must be done. There is only one shot at this, one way it ends.
“Katniss, get away from that tree,” Finnick warns.
She does not heed it, preparing for her final act. Twisting the wire around her arrow, a single shot toward the bolt of lightning. Her body is sent flying when it collides.
The screen goes black, Madge’s mouth agape. Nothing like this has ever happened. What will happen? What will Snow do?
She doesn’t have long to agonize over the prospect before the old communication system hums to life. Static cracking through the speaker. A jumble of nonsense and then a voice, her voice. Madge would know it anywhere.
“Into the woods-”
“Y/N,” Mayor Undersee nearly trips in his haste to reach the receiver. “Sweetheart, are you there?”
“District twelve…” the line crackles, “into the woods.” Then she is gone.
They aren’t able to revive the signal.
“We have to move.” Madge understands.
“She wasn’t making any sense.” Her father argues. “It might be safer if we stay-”
“Y/N is stuck in the Capitol, that may be the last message she ever sends and she sent it here. To you, to me. So we have a chance.”
He squares his jaw, struggling to accept this news. Not because he thinks his daughter is wrong…because he knows that she is right.
“I’m gonna warn the Everdeens and then I’m taking Everest and Arista into the woods where it’s safe. Pounding on doors and screaming, all the way, for our people to follow.”
“Get the kids ready to move, I’ll get your mother.”
“Thank you.” Madge says, chest heaving as she turns on her heels. Waking the children, taking nothing but the clothes on their backs.
Her parents are waiting at the door, with Gale and Katniss’ family.
“How long do we have?” Gale asks, Primrose and Miss Everdeen tucked away behind him.
“Hovercrafts could be here in an hour, maybe two.” The mayor informs him.
“Something tells me they’re in a hurry.”
————————————————————————
“I need you to take a big breath for me.” Haymitch is kneeling in front of his wife. Cupping her face in his hands, the line is down, they can no longer communicate with district twelve.
“I can’t.” Y/N claws at his hands, unable to deny that she’s having contractions, no more than two minutes apart. “Haymitch…” what if they didn’t get the message.
“Everest and Arista are gonna be waiting for us. Madge too.” Haymitch knows it. There is no other outcome. “Thirteen is sending hovercrafts for evacuation as soon as possible.”
“Did we get Peeta?”
“We have Katniss, Beetee, Finnick and Cashmere, for now. The pilot is swinging back around for Peeta and Johanna.” They only have a few minutes before the Capitol fleet arrives. “We’re gonna get them, ok?”
Y/N nods, breathing out through her nose.
“I need you to focus on this.” He runs a hand over her belly, tense with another contraction. “Healthy baby, healthy you.”
————————————————————————
Katniss startles awake, an oxygen mask tied to her face. She’s in the hovercraft. They’re taking us to the Capitol. Beetee is beside her, still unconscious. They must be holding Peeta elsewhere.
The last thing she remembers is the arrow firing, broken pieces of the arena falling around her and the claw.
“Ahhhhhhh!” A piercing scream echoes through the hovercraft.
All the more terrifying because Katniss knows it, she heard it among the jabberjays. Y/N. They are torturing her. Katniss can’t say how, but it must be something awful. Tearing the flesh from her body…
Removing the mask, she scans the area for something, anything she can use, a syringe. All she needs is a clear shot at one of her veins, save Y/N from whatever they’re planning to do next. Then she would move on to Peeta, spare him this hell.
Katniss hides the weapon behind her back, tapping the glowing access panel to open the door.
Y/N is there, sweat clings the material of her dress to her body; mouth open in an agonized howl.
Haymitch is seated behind her, keeping her upright, holding her hands. Cashmere is perched between her legs.
Finnick spots Katniss first, from his place beside Plutarch, at the holographic display table. “Katniss.”
“Katniss?” Y/N repeats, eyes searching for her.
The syringe clatters to the ground, Katniss charging toward her and crouching at her side.
“Honey, are you ok?” Y/N shakes one hand free from Haymitch’s grasp, reaching for her.
Katniss, takes it, pressing her cheek against the back of her mentor’s hand. No. “I thought…”
Y/N bears down as another contraction ripples through her abdomen.
“That was good.” Cashmere nods, patting Y/N’s knee.
“What is that?” Y/N’s given birth twice before, this is different.
“Just keep doing what you’re doing.” Cashmere encourages as tiny feet appear, “everything is ok.” It’s not ideal, but if they keep the baby moving-
“Where’s Peeta?” Katniss turns to Haymitch.
His eyes are glossy, hesitant to reply, “he’s in the Capitol. They got him and Johanna. We couldn’t get to him in time. But we’re gonna talk to President Coin when we get to district thirteen and figure out the best way to get him back.”
You’re a liar. Katniss wants to scream it, to slap him, hard, for breaking his promise. But it will have to wait. You promised to save him over me.
Exhausted and frustrated, Y/N reaches a hand down to make sense of what’s happening. “Breech?”
“Yeah,” Cashmere breathes.
Finnick is just beyond the blonde’s shoulder, a pained expression on his face. Or perhaps nauseated, watching over Y/N without actively watching.
“Once we deliver the shoulders, it should be easy.” Katniss has seen this before, her mother delivered a handful of breech babies, as a healer. The women of district twelve would call on her when the babies got stuck.
Y/N pushes again, crying out as she does.
Haymitch rests his cheek against the crown of her head. “I’m sorry.” He apologizes to the sound of her sobs. “I’m so sorry.”
Y/N continues, the same way Haymitch has known her to face any difficulty, with fierce determination. The infant is placed on her chest, kicking and crying. Healthy; same as her brother and sister before her.

Pretty Lil Thang
Pairings: Josh Andreś Rivera x Fem!Actress!Reader / Rachel Zigler x Tom Blyth
A/N: I know Rachel and Josh are together, and Tom also has a girlfriend, but my page is related to Sejanus. For this, she's gonna be dating Tom, cus chemistry. I wanted to try something new, so I tried a social media post! Please, criticism is appreciated 🫶🏾. I will probably be making this into a mini series.
Face Claim: Coco Jones (The pictures with Rachel and Josh just imagine they are Josh, and you)
Type: Social Media Au
Summary: You auditioned for Mai White, Sejanus' love interest in the Ballad of the Songbirds and Snakes. Rachel notices that you and Josh have taken a liking to each other. Mini series!
