Its entirely strange to me the relation Hazbin/Helluva fans have with their chosen work. In every other piece of media, be it literature, tv shows, movies, games, or multimedia work, fans have at least some form of self-awareness and analysis of the work in question. There are camps people fall in, common meta-myths and narratives about the work and a complex relation with the creator(s) of said work. Yet for Hazbin and Helluva, the fandom operates in a extremely weird monolithic parasocial behavior that shuns critique and analysis that doesn't seek to prolong and strengthen their circlejerk. I have rarely seen a fandom so obsessive and uniform in their hatred of questioning the validity of the work that it reminds me of what people in the 70s divorced from sci-fi culture mistook Trekkies for, a strange insular group that seeks to worship "mediocre" piece of media and battle any and all criticism of it(this is of course, not true of Trekkies at all!)

I don't know, its just weird and honestly saddening to see.

You know, I was actually totally willing to give her the benefit of the doubt when her and Joe broke up because sometimes you can have a lot of love for someone but you just become different people after a while and the relationship is no longer right for you. And when she originally released that statement that the split was amicable, I actually thought that it made a refreshing change for a breakup of hers to be so low-key. I thought that since this was her longest relationship, she might have actually had love for him and they just decided they were better off friends or something. It's when her weird, petty behavior started that I really started to get annoyed by her. And now it's just an instinctive reaction every time I see her face. But it's so weird and creepy the way she reacts every time Joe shows his face in public. If it were just an album/single release, I could call it a coincidence like many try to insist it is. But it's hard to see it as a coincidence when people were literally predicting she would perform YLM in Australia and she did. It's especially hard to ignore it because this was literally the first time she performed it live. And there's a record of her doing the same type of stuff. How many times can we write this off as coincidence. It genuinely gives off some emotionally manipulative vibes where the bitter individual tries to punish their ex for daring to exist without them. I'm not making accusations towards her, I'm just saying these are the vibes she's giving off. And unlike most other bitter people, she has the most unhinged fanbase in the world. While I do wish Joe nothing but safety and happiness, I'm not even as worried about him as much as I am just extremely creeped out by her behavior

i feel like most people don't realize just how easily parasocial relationships develop. it can happen over literally nothing.

when i was about 17 ish i had a blog where i would upload my emoji art. that was it. no selfies, no fan stuff, no characters, for the longest time i solely posted just little yellow emojis. i then joked about the hypothetical of my boyfriend breaking up with me one (1) time, and got like five asks of people hitting on me despite the fact that i had little to no personality to them at all

basically: don't treat strangers like close friends. a joke that your friends would find funny can come across as creepy to a stranger (yes this includes twitch streamers i stg i promise pointcrow doesnt think of you as his buddy) and i implore you to keep that in mind while browsing the internet

I don't think I've ever been in a position where I've been close enough to a certain creator/batch of creators where I can examine mid-sized to large-scale drama, with relatively low stakes, but I am now, which is exciting because everyone is using the buzzword I have a strong love/hate relationship with: parasocial. Almost everyone has a parasocial relationship, except maybe babies or people who don't ever engage with media or people who know exactly what PRs they are and exactly how to avoid them. They aren't inherently bad or necessarily unhealthy. That feeling of disappointment you get when someone you saw value in as a creator or a mentor does something bad or makes a mistake is not proof that your parasocial relationship has run amok or gone too far, that is proof that you are a human being who has been hurt by people that you care about, the same way you would feel if it was a person you knew in your everyday life. It's fine to feel sad, disappointed, and frustrated when someone has done something to make you feel that way even when that person is an internet person. If your sadness has turned into grief and you find it difficult to cope in your daily life because of something that an internet person has done, that's a different story and it would serve you well to examine the connections you have with people.

And if you're angry to the point of racism, you are just being racist and that has little to do with this.
