People getting hung up on the “without all the racists” line in “I Hate It Here” are really missing the point of the song, and clearly have never been “The Weird Kid” in school (or just in life, it happens in adulthood, too).
You know, the one who’s always felt isolated because they can’t quite connect with their peers.
If you, as a writer, censor yourself for fear of offending others, or too afraid of being called “cringe” by teens that think they know everything (they really don’t), then you probably shouldn’t be an artist. At least until you’ve developed a thicker skin.
The point of art is to create something. It doesn’t matter if it offends someone. If someone does get offended by something you put your heart and soul into… well, that’s their problem, not yours.
Art doesn’t hurt anyone. It literally can’t. It’s not sentient or capable of physical harm.
If you love what you’ve created, that’s all that matters. And all the better if others love it, too.
“I Hate It Here” perfectly exemplifies what it is like to be ostracized for being who you are.

I’m so goddamn sick of the complaint that “imgonnagetyouback” is a ripoff of OR’s “get him back!”
They’re really not.
This is giving me flashbacks to when Halsey was being accused of ripping off “Red” when she wrote “Colors”.
People, none of these songs are remotely alike. The only similarities are that they are love songs.
That’s it.
Olivia is in her Avril Lavigne Era and Taylor in her “I Escaped Shutter Island, Unhinged AF, Floating Down Dark Streets & Shrieking Like A Banshee” Era.
As someone who likes both OR and TS’s music (Note: I am not a Stan, just appreciate great music no matter who produces it)
I think both songs are great and 10,000 leagues different in production, style and overall vibes.
I’ll say the same for Halsey’s “Colors”. It sounds nothing like “Red”. Taylor didn’t invent the concept behind equating colors to emotions. Ed Sheeran did the same with “Colourblind”.
TL;DR: Quit your bitchin’ and moanin’ and enjoy the music. And if you don’t like it, no one’s holding you at gunpoint, are they?
