5 + 1 Fic Friday Roundup: Haunted

Fics that involve being haunted - seeing ghosts, shouldering regrets, etc - with some overlap with "I See Dead People".

The deeply moralist tone that a lot of discussions about media representation take on here are primarily neoliberal before they are anything else. Like the shouting matches people get into about “purity culture” “pro/anti” etc nonsense (even if I think it’s true that some people have a deeply christian worldview about what art ought to say and represent about the world) are downstream of the basic neoliberal assumption that we can and must educate the public by being consumers in a market. “Bad representation” is often framed as a writer’s/developer’s/director’s/etc’s failure to properly educate their audience, or to educate them the wrong way with bad information about the world (which will compel their audience to act, behave, internalise or otherwise believe these bad representations about some social issue). Likewise, to “consume” or give money to a piece of media with Bad Representation is to legitimate and make stronger these bad representations in the world, an act which will cause more people to believe or internalise bad things about themselves or other people. And at the heart of both of those claims is, again, the assumption that mass public education should be undertaken by artists in a private market, who are responsible for creating moral fables and political allegories that they will instil in their audiences by selling it to them. These conversations often become pure nonsense if you don’t accept that the moral and political education of the world should be directed by like, studio executives or tv actors or authors on twitter. There is no horizon of possibility being imagined beyond purchasing, as an individual consumer in a market, your way into good beliefs about the world, instilled in you by Media Product 

HEY! YOU!

You've probably heard by now, but from March 4th to 10th 2024, Help Gaza Children will be sending all their donations to families in northern Gaza, where food prices have skyrocketed even more than in the south. Their goal is $25K by the end of the week; at the time of writing this post, it's about halfway a quarter way there! (OG post about it) [EDIT: my mistake, I misinterpreted the numbers in the original post; evidently I cannot do arithmetic anymore]

This is their notion site, which has their donation link as well as additional info, their FAQ, important updates, and proof of purchases from donations they’ve gotten in the past. You can also donate directly to their paypal here.

As such, I'll be open for sketch commissions up from now (March 7th, 2024 ~02:20 PST) through March 10th in exchange for proof of donation to Help Gaza Children!

BASIC OVERVIEW:

Tier 1 - Basic head/bust sketch for $1-5 USD, +50% for basic color. Up to 3 characters.

Tier 2 - Basic screencap resketch for $5-15 USD, +50% for basic color.

Tier 3 - Posed sketch for $15-25 USD, 1-2 characters ONLY.

Tier 4 - Colored clean sketch: $25+ USD, 1-2 characters ONLY.

RULES:

Please provide a visual reference or detailed description of the character(s) you want drawn (and depending on the tier, a screencap or pose/expression you want to go with it)

DO'S: OCs, humans and human-like creatures, other creatures that don't have a lot of mechanical or anatomical detail (as in, I can TRY to do mecha stuff, but I think you and I will both be better of if I don't lol; can ask for further details)

DON'T'S: any NSFW stuff, real people currently alive (as in, historical figures in the setting of historical fiction may be okay, but other things may not be; can ask for further details)

If you've made your donation in a currency that is not USD, I'll give you something of equivalent value according to the tier based on whatever the conversion is at the time that I look it up. If one or both of our economies crashes spectacularly in between the time you send it and the time I look it up, I'm very sorry in advance

Fic Friday 5 + 1 Roundup: Before Your Time

Some fics where people time travel beyond their own time - before they were born even - rather than doing their own life over.

Recoil (FF / SB) - "The fight against Behemoth in New Delhi goes horribly wrong. Taylor, almost the only survivor, is sent back into the past by Phir Sē to try to fix matters. But there are complications ..."

According to Plan (AO3) - "The plan was very simple: go back in time, kill Kate, kill Gerard, never ever make contact with his parents, try to find a place within the Hale pack or not, but either way, live the rest of his life displaced and without the people he loves. Of course, as it always is with him these days, nothing goes according to plan."

The Road to Victory (AO3) - "Too late in preparing for the Night King and the Long Night, the last stand at Winterfell is close to falling. re: that gamete article, I think what’s also compelling to anti-trans activists is that gametes are invisible - it’s the same reason why debates about chromosomes are persuasive, they are imperceptible in all social interactions outside of a doctor’s office, and so counter-intuitively they can be argued as being always visible, always seeping out through our pours as a gendered essence that cannot be concealed or changed. actually being able to look at your individual gametes or chromosomes is gated behind medical institutions, and because of this inaccessibility they can be loaded with all kinds of social and political meaning, converted into a mystical essence contained within the body that imbues you with a gendered spirit. this is why I don’t think we should ever concede that transphobes are making biological arguments - they are using the authority of evolutionary and medical biology to do gender metaphysics, it’s a deliberate mystification of scientific authority for reactionary political goals. they aren’t making scientific claims and they aren’t trying to

did he import it because of his roots or did he just desire lemons?

I think it was a futile attempt to establish some connection to his birthplace. He's come such a long way from there and has barely any memories from his early childhood. Sicily is a vulcanic island with famously fertile soil, it's been a well known producer of high quality lemons for centuries.
