NCIS: Los Angeles Season 13 Rewatch:  “Murmuration”
The basics:  After an F-35 goes into the Pacific after colliding with an unknown aircraft, the team investigates what happened.
Written by:  Samantha Chasse co-wrote "Kill Beale Vol. 1" and wrote "Impostor Syndrome".
Directed by:  James Hanlon who directed "War Cries", "The Grey Man", "Kolcheck, A", "Driving Miss Diaz", "Command and Control" (number 150), "Angels and Daemons", "Where There’s Smoke", "Black Market", "Tidings We Bring", "Can I Get a Witness?", "Cac Tu Nhan", "A Diamond in the Rough", "Into the Breach", "Human Resources”, “Commitment Issues” and "The Nobel Maidens".
Guest stars of note: Duncan Campbell returns as NCIS Special Agent Castor from “All the Little Things”, Benjamin Papac as Gabe Dawson, William deVry as Navy Captain Lombardo/XO, Graham Patrick Martin as Navy Lt. Joseph Landry, Danny Brown as Navy Air Intercept Controller Heather Greene, Rahnuma Panthaky as Taylor Dubrons, Ashley Zipperman as Navy Petty Officer Demi Walker and J.B. Bauersfeld as NRO Agent Mark Rexingham
Our heroes:  Are on the sea and on the land for this hour.
What important things did we learn about:
Callen:  Worried about Lt. Landry. Sam:   Thinks the Allegiance has a leadership void. Kensi:   On board with the stars on the ceiling after all. Deeks:   Was himself and that’s what made Kensi love him. Fatima:  Planned to take down the drone swarm. Rountree:  Delivering a motorbike to Kensi and Deeks. Kilbride:  Asking a lot of Fatima.
What not so important things did we learn about:
Callen:  Not running a triathlon. Sam:   Running a triathlon Kensi:   Suddenly worried about clutter. Deeks:   Fan of the classic toys. Fatima:   Fan of the Oregon Trail video game. Rountree:  Fan of the Turbo Shot 300. Kilbride:  Not interested in anything UFO related.
Where in the world is Henrietta Lange?  Unknown.
Who's down with OTP:  Deeks is freaking out about being a good father, Kensi is there to keep him calm.  The episode ends with the two of them snuggled up under the possible foster child’s ceiling of stars.
Who's down with BrOTP:  Callen and Sam were in good form on the Allegiance.  Fatima might keep Rountree around considering how helpful he was in this episode.
Fashion review:  Callen is in a green and white plaid button-down shirt.  Black long-sleeve tee for Sam.  Dark red sweater for Kensi today while Deeks is in a white henley.  Fatima is wearing a white turtleneck with four colored glass buttons on the cuffs of the sleeves.  A pale blue tree-shirt for Rountree under a blue plaid jacket with a thin shearling lining.  As always, a blue three-piece suit for the Admiral, this one with a white shirt and red and white pattern tie.
Music:   Not today.
Any notable cut scene:   Not today.
Quote:  Sam:  “I'm starting to think the USS Allegiance has a leadership problem.” Callen:  “Ah, what tipped you off? The abandoned infant or the jilted pilot?”
Anything else:  Back on the Allegiance, an alarm is going off.  A sailor at a radar station, Intercept Controller Greene, is warning an aircraft is about to enter their restricted airspace.  She asks if they can hear her.  She gets no response.  As she starts to repeat her warning, the XO is on deck.  All the sailors stand but the XO tells them “as you were.”  He approaches Greene and asks for a sitrep.  The aircraft is quickly approaching the ship.  She’s tried to contact them without any success.  The aircraft is 15-miles out.  The XO  wants the Allegiance pilots flying near the ship to check out the aircraft.
When one pilot is given his orders, he asks if this is a test during his training assignment.  It is not.
The XO wonders why the aircraft was picked up sooner.  He’s told the radar systems only just found it.  “It’s as if it came out of nowhere, sir.”
The pilot radios the other aircraft, explaining they are entering restricted airspace and must change course immediately.  If they do not comply, they will be fired on.
Greene reports that the unknown aircraft just stopped.  The XO thinks it fell into the ocean but Greene explains it just stopped – it is hovering.   They hear the pilot say he’s going to fly by the aircraft but when he tries, alarms in his plane start going off.  He tells the Allegiance that he’s been hit by projectiles.  “Contact lost” shows up on the radar operator’s screen.
In the office, Deeks is opening a number of delivery boxes.  Kensi walks in and jokes that the two of them are paying for Jeff Bezos’s next space trip.  Deeks bought a number of toys that Kensi notes were popular in the early 1990’s.  Deeks considers them classics.  Rountree is impressed.  He even grabs for one of the toys – a Turbo Shot 300.  Kensi explains that the foster inspection is coming and they aren’t looking for toys, they are looking for a good home – one free of clutter.  Deeks wants to create a welcoming environment, which Kensi thinks is sweet but it is just a small part of the inspection.  Besides, modern kids don’t want 30-year old toys.
In the boatshed, Callen arrives as Sam is walking down from the upstairs area.  Sam is running a triathlon.  Callen tells Sam he was with Anna.  That pleases Sam – Napa did them some good.  Asking about Sam’s dad, Sam tells Callen his father is getting better but isn’t listening to anyone’s advice.  When Sam tells Callen it looks like he hasn’t slept, Callen brings up the deep fakes and how DARPA’s media forensics team can’t trace them.  The better DARPA gets at finding the deep fake program’s flaws, the better the program gets at fixing its mistakes.  Katya keeps updating the program.  Looking out the back deck, Callen sees a flock of birds flying over the water.  “She is never going to stop.”  Agent Castor walks in with a man in a Navy sweatshirt saying the man insisted on coming to see them.
In Ops, Fatima asks if Kensi, Deeks and Rountree saw the video of the UPA siting.  Since it was on the news, they all did.  Fatima plays the video with the cameraman’s description of what is happening.  These bright lights in the sky are hovering over a canyon between Santa Monica and Malibu.  They were hovering for at least five minutes.  Dozens of videos are showing up on social media.  Deeks brings up UFOs just when the Admiral arrives,  He corrects Deeks – they are UAPs, Unidentified Aerial Phenomenon.  “I know three-letter words are hard, let’s try to keep up.”  Kensi is silently laughing.
The Admiral explains the unidentified aircraft that entered US airspace until it was picked up by the Allegiance.  During pursuit of the aircraft, there was a mid-air collision, causing the pilot to eject.  Kensi asks about the pilot, who was recovered but ejecting while flying at Mack 1 was probably not great for his nerves.  The Navy plane was lost, causing some speculation in the media, according to Fatima, that it wasn’t an unidentified aircraft, it was a Russian, Chinese of North Korean aircraft.  “It’s a damn circus out there” according to the Admiral.  All of this is worrisome since they don’t know what the aircraft was and it was able to slip into US airspace with ease.
The Admiral makes it “abundantly clear” this is not about “little green men in flying sauces.”  Something ordered by someone violated US airspace and international law as it threatened a US Navy vessel.  “This is a matter of national security.”  Fatima’s tablet beeps with a text from Sam.  Castor’s visitor was the pilot who ejected, Lt. Joseph Landry.  He was supposed to be in the hospital until later that day.
In Interrogation, Callen comes in with a glass of water for Landry.  Landry tries to pick it up but is shaking so violently, he nearly spills it all.  Callen is going for a towel but Landry wants to clean it up himself.  Using the sleeve of his sweatshirt, he cleans up a little of the spill.  Pulling the wet sleeves, Callen sees there is still an IV port in Landry’s right arm.   Callen tells Landry he doesn’t have to talk to them right now.  “I need to do this.”
Sitting down, Callen asks what happened.  Landry explains that he was diverted from his training mission since he was the closest plane to the aircraft – “if you can call it that.”  Landry said the plane had no anti-collision lights.  He could barely see the heat signature on his dashboard before the aircraft broke apart.   Callen wants more information.  Landry explains that he thought the aircraft was deploying countermeasures but they all moved toward him.  Landry tried to fly away but they followed him.  He deployed his own countermeasures as he tried to fly above what was following him.  As he started to climb, whatever was out there hit his wing.  With his plane going into a spin, he punched out.
Callen recaps, says whatever it was fired on Landry’s plane and damaged the wing.  Landry gives a hurried “no” before taking a deep breath and trying again.  As he told the people in the hospital, there was no radar lock or missile threat.  One of the countermeasures hit him mid-flight.  The Navy is now classifying his encounter as a bird strike.  Landry can’t believe it.  A flock of birds can’t take down an F-35.  Callen asks why is Landry talking to NCIS.  And why did he leave the hospital before they were supposed to release him.  Landry is frustrated.  He ejected at 7,000 feet and now is being told what happened to him didn’t happen.  A bird did not take down his jet.
Rountree heard from the Coast Guard, he’s getting a list of all the ships in the area.  Fatima is having a hard time tracing what happened to the F-35.  Its infrared camera didn’t record any useful data.  None of this makes any sense.  The aircraft got close to the Allegiance and nobody knows how.  It is fortunate that nobody got hurt.  Rountree has an idea.  They don’t know what the odd lights are but there are so many videos of them, Fatima could track their locations with the video and find where they are coming from.  Smiling, Fatima may keep Rountree around.
Landing on the Allegiance, Callen and Sam introduce themselves to the XO.  The XO is sorry Callen and Sam are there because they’re likely wasting their time but he understands with the media scrutiny, NCIS had no other options.   Going to the ship’s version of the Ops big screen, the XO shows Callen and Sam the flight map from the prior evening.  The XO points out when the aircraft shows up and blames it not being picked up earlier on a mechanical failure.  That catches the attention of the radar operator who is nearby.
The XO continues, saying that Landry was assigned to take a look.  Callen tells the XO that Landry said the incident was going to be classified as a bird strike – does the XO agree with that assessment?  He doesn’t agree with the bird strike classification but he doesn’t agree with what Landry did either.  The prior night’s incident was a “combination of technical failure and inexperience.”  Landry graduated at the top of his F-35 class, according to Sam.  Callen wonders why the XO sent Landry in if he was so inexperienced.
Walking out of earshot of his sailors, the XO says the aircraft was a glitch in their radar system.  Landry was never in any danger.  Callen says that the pilots story is different but the XO thinks the pilot’s fear is speaking.   Sam asks if Landry is giving them a false story.  “To him, no.”  But the XO is sure a more experience pilot could have saved the crippled plane and understood what was on his radar.  “Calling this an accident is a favor to him.”
The XO says in his time, statements about UAPs were career-enders.  Now the Navy has a task force looking into them.  Two members of the Army in camo gear walk into the deck, the XO excuses himself to deal with them.
In a hallway, Sam tells Callen he thinks the Allegiance has a leadership problem.  “What tipped you off?” Callen jokes.  Sam recognized the patches on the Army personnel as being Army Future Command.  He’s not sure why they would be on the Allegiance even after Landry trashed his F-35.  Callen tells Sam that Landry was questioned in the hospital.  He thought it was the Agent Afloat asking the questions but maybe it wasn’t.  Callen contacts Fatima, asking if any other agencies of departments are working on the case.  Fatima says NCIS is leading the case with the Coast Guard and UAP Task Force following.  She asks why but Callen and Sam are not comfortable doing this on comms.
Offering some good news, Fatima found what may have hit the plane.  While most of it likely in the Pacific, something made it way aback to the coast, damaged.  Using location data and a map, she found a quarter mile radius where it likely landed in the Santa Monica Mountains.  Kensi and Deeks are on their way now to check things out.  Callen and Sam are impressed.
Driving the Audi in the mountains, Kensi and Deeks are listening to news reports about the UAP.  A driving Deeks find nothing promising as they climb a hill.   Pulling over, Deeks notices that Kensi is looking through his shopping cart on his phone and not for a podcast.  Deeks is offended – his shopping cart is private, even if he only has the essentials in it.  Kensi wonders what is essential about glow in the dark ceiling stars.  Deeks tells her all the cool kids had it – it is the world’s best nightlight.  For Kensi, It is also a choking hazard.
Deeks asks what Kensi had on her ceiling to invoke childhood wonder and imagination.  She had stucco and darkness.  This explains so much to Deeks.  Kensi explains so much to Deeks.  She thinks he’s overdoing it because he’s afraid the kid may not like him.  Deeks says no but that becomes a maybe.  Pointing out that Kensi is so good with kids (have they watched the first few seasons of the show?), Deeks wants to stack the deck.  Kensi assures him being himself will get the kid to like them – it worked on her.  He buys the stars anyway.  Kensi and Deeks can’t go any farther in the car so they start climbing the mountain on foot.
In Ops, Rountree tells Fatima that the Coast Guard had no unusual events the prior night and San Clemente Island (where SEAL training happens) had no training events.  Fatima was thinking – the UAP retreated after the altercation with the jet, not attack.  Maybe it was there to gain intel.  Fatima thinks it was an UAV/drone swarm.  Rountree is going to update Callen and Sam as the Admiral arrives.  He has the SECNAV waiting for him – he needs a sit-rep.  Fatima advances her UAV swarm idea.  The Admiral wonders if they were armed.  Probably not, Fatima says but if they wanted to, the UAV swarm could have used lethal force.  They weren’t there to attack, they were there to see what would happen.
With the UAV swarm over the ship, they could be pulling data from the Allegiance that would provide a picture to its controller about all the intel, technology and weapons on the boat.  This is how someone could invade a world power.
Deeks is unhappy they are walking on the real Oregon trail.   Kensi comes across a decent sized hole in the ground, scorched earth and broken tree branches around them.  There is noise nearby so Kensi and Deeks pull their weapons.  A young man comes out of the woods with his hands up.
After being patted down by Kensi, the young man, Gabe Dawson, says he is a college student, so Deeks wants to know why he is hiding in the forest from some federal agent.  Dawson isn’t sure Kensi and Deeks are federal agents – they’re not wearing uniforms.  He asks Deeks to return his messenger bag.  Deeks tosses it to Dawson.  He has his podcasting equipment in the bag as the host of the I Know You Know I Know” podcast.  Kensi is stunned.  Dawson has been tracking the UAV swarm for a while.  He thought he’d get to the UAV first but someone beat him to it – and he didn’t see who.
Deeks asks how long is “a while” for tracking the swarm.  Dawson says at least a couple of weeks.  Kensi asks for proof but that inly only available as premium content for paid subscribers.  Seeing Kensi call into Ops with her earwig, Dawson want to know about all about them.  With his microphone running.
Kensi calls into Fatima about the not having the UAV and meeting Dawson.  The plan is forward Dawson’s photos and have the UAP task force cross-reference them with the prior swarm incidents.  None of this is good news.
A disappointed Callen and Sam have heard the same story as the XO’s from all the staff on the deck until Greene approaches them.  She explains she was the one who saw the aircraft on the radar.  She thought she missed something, allowing the aircraft to the near the ship.  Reviewing it, it wasn’t a mistake.  Whatever it was it could have flown at an altitude where it wasn’t picked up by radar until it got near the ship.  Knowing it would get caught, whatever was out there set itself up as an aircraft to see what their reaction would be.  “Does that sound like a malfunction to you?”  This all confirms Fatima’s theory.
Outside of interrogation, Callen and Sam realize the only country that has UAVs that could fly the way the UAV swarm did is the US.  So is this some rogue US company doing this or was the technology stolen and sold abroad.  Callen calls Rountree to ask for any company with DoD ties that has drone programs at this level of sophistication.  There is only one company, Panlark and they are based in LA.  Fatima returns to Ops with a file from the UAP task force.  It is huge.  Rountree is off to find the Admiral and they’ll all go through it together.
While looking around for the drone, Dawson is asking Kensi and Deeks a lot of questions for his podcast – do they have microchips in the brain – and pushing his podcast merch.  Mercifully, Fatima contacts them.  The UAP Task Force has at least seven other similar sightings in the last two months.  Dawson thinks that’s ridiculous.  There were seven sightings in the last week.  He tells them the drone swarm takes off every night after some solar recharging.  With a 5:30PM sunset, they have to warn the Allegiance.
Opening the files, Fatima is stunned by what’s available.  There are radio transmissions, flight paths, scans of the terrain.  Rountree walks in, equally stunned.  “This is so much bigger than we thought,” Fatima says.
The drones have flown around the Navy testing site at San Clemente Island.  The Allegiance is obviously the target but San Clemente Island should be put on alert.  The Admiral hopes Fatima has a plan to stop tonight’s flight – he has calls to make.  Bringing them down before they hit the Pacific is a problem because they would land in residential areas.  The same with the civilian boats in the sea.  Fatima is going to try to hijack the drone swarm’s signals.  It was done in Afghanistan.  Taking over their signal, she hopes to land the swarm.
An engineer from Panlark is in the boatshed explaining that the drone swarm is learning from each time they fly.  As a swarm, they learn together but having each drone learn something new and share it with the others.  This is the same intelligence that is used to make deepfakes.  Callen asks how do they stop the swarm.  The engineer tells him there is no way to stop this.  They learn together – take one down and the others all know what not to do.  The only way to stop the drone swarm is to take them down simultaneously.
Callen joins Sam in the main part of the boatshed.  The swarm over the Allegiance learned what happened if they got too close to the ship.  “Testing the fences.”  Sam calls Fatima and updates her on what the engineer told them.  Sam is sure there will be another attack that night.  Fatima send Rountree to Kensi and Deeks.  She is going to try to control the drones but is really worried that if she fails, possibly armed drones will be crashing into the streets in LA.  He tells her to make sure he gets it right.
Rountree arrives at the drone site but the equipment is too big to bring up the hill.  Rountree has plan – a motorcycle.
The Admiral gets off the phone with SECNAV.  He is not happy.
Fatima sits at her workstation and starts taking over the drones.  Kensi and Deeks get close to the launch site but are a bit off.  They need to get closer to the setting sun.
Interviewing the engineer, Callen needs to know who sold these drones.  She makes it clear, the drones belong to the US.  Lanark made them for the DoD.
Fatima realizes that nobody is controlling the drones – they are controlling themselves.  “This is rouge AI.”  The Admiral arrive sand tells Fatima to stand down.
At the base of the mountain, Rountree and Dawson have company.  A rather generic sedan pulls up.
On the ship, Greene walks away from her station to use the restroom.  Walking down the hall, she sees the drone swarming coming toward the ship.
Dawson is sure he and Rountree are going to be killed by the Men in Black but the two gentlemen getting out of the sedan are with the National Reconnaissance Office.  The men want NCIS and Dawson off the mountain now.
Sam gets a call.  The case is over. This isn’t a treat to Naval operations.  Callen disagrees.  Someone has to pay for what happened.  Callen confronts the engineer about the drones becoming autonomous.  “What the US government does with it is not our concern.”  She knows the feds wouldn’t tell her anyway.  Callen asks how she could take zero responsibility for this. The AI going rouge isn’t a problem, the people running the AI going rouge is.
In his office, the Admiral wants to talk to Fatima.  He wants to explain what happened.  The best of intentions can have dire consequences.  The Army allowed the UAV swarm to run autonomously.  It worked, too well.  The Army Futures Command lost control.  Why train on other country’s ships when it could learn from the finest Navy in the world.  Fatima is grateful for the update.
She asks what will happen to the drones.  Explaining that this is the same as the US/Russian race to the moon, the US has to win this one as well.  The TV news calls the drone swarms a Navy training mission with weather balloons.
Returning to the office with the radar equipment, Rountree and Fatima talk about all that’s gone wrong with the team using AI.  Rountree wants to play Oregon Trail in Ops.
In the second bedroom, Kensi is lying on the floor with her eyes closed.  Deeks turns off the lights and shows her the stars he put on the ceiling.  She thinks it is really cool.  He agrees.
What head canon can be formed from here:   Again, the Kensi and Deeks switch around.  Kensi is worried about getting rid of clutter in the house after 12-seasons of her being called a hoarder by the people who care about her.  Deeks is suddenly terrible with kids and frightened by that but Kensi is fantastic with kids.  Because Emma Mastin’s son and Commander Chambers daughter were terrible with Deeks and Kensi was delighted to be asked to babysit Kam.
In “All the Little Things”, the sailors on the Allegiance were all good people.  The sailor who found the baby, the sailor who was happy the baby was kept warm with his shirt, the sailor who was friends with the baby’s mother – all solid people.  Here, the fish is rotting from the head down with an XO seemingly to dislike his crew, especially Lt. Landry.  Didn’t ask about Landry, just sneered at his accusations and the fact that the Navy was going to save his career.
Fatima and Rountree did a lot of heavy lifting explaining all the tech to the viewer at home.  Sorry Fatima didn’t get an opportunity to save the day – it would have been nice.  Thought Sam telling Fatima “no pressure” in a  jokey way as she was about to override the drone swarm seemed out of character.  Sam boosts up people difficult situations.  He doesn’t tell them the obvious.
Episode number:     Episode 12 of season 13, episode 292 overall.

For the ship meme, any Endeavour ship?
Ooh, lovely, thank you!
I don't have a romantic Endeavour OTP (I just love Morse and Fred in any capacity I can get them :D ), but I've been reading increasing amounts of Morse/Max lately and they are a delight together and I think make rather a lot of sense, so let's go with that. :D - who controls the netflix account and what have they dominated the suggestions with by watching
Max, and a large range of documentaries, well-done period dramas, and the occasional fantasy show. His guilty pleasure is The Witcher, and he's still annoyed that they've dropped El Ministerio del Tiempo.
He occasionally watches medical dramas around Morse in order to both heckle them for their inaccuracies and to wind Morse up. Morse is fine with Max controlling the Netflix account because he has a very used account with medici.tv, and watches every post-1760 opera he can find on it as well as a far number of concerts. Max occasionally manages to steal it in order to sneak in some Handel or Cavalli. They sometimes cuddle up together for some Mozart.
- who snores
Max, though generally quite quietly and pleasantly. Morse finds it hard to sleep without that sound now. - who has an embarrassing ringtone that the other calls them in public just to get to go off
Jakes set Morse's ringtone to "The Ride of the Valkyries" four years ago and Morse has still not managed to switch it back. Max claims this is a judgement on him for liking Wagner, and times his calls perfectly. :D - who sleeps on the top bunk if given the chance
They will both avoid bunk beds whenever possible, but when it's unavoidable Max takes the top bunk, largely to stop Morse falling out of bed.
- who plays the piano at 6 in the morning to wake up the other
Max, but since he plays rather well Morse never minds too much, and it tends to wake him up more gently than an alarm. - who has accidentally set something on fire by attempting to cook a birthday meal This was a team effort between Morse and Thursday trying to cook a meal for Max, in advance of the surprise party for his 45th that evening. Strange ended up talking them through what to do over the phone. Max and Win may have both used this as an excuse to prod Morse and Fred into Finally Learning To Cook Properly FFS, and they've both got better since.

A Roadmap of Lucaya: Season 2
I’m back! Sorry this took so long, but I’m back at work (boo!) and that’s eating up a lot of my time. But since it’s a holiday today, I decided to finally get this up.
One quick note: There were SO MANY MOMENTS leading up to Texas that I decided to focus more on the important ones. For real, the original version of this post was uncomfortably long. I’ll summarize the smaller moments at the end of the post.
Without further ado, season 2!
Mr. Squirrels: This is where things start getting interesting! Lucas finally teases Maya back, and she’s upset about it (though more so at Riley than him; however, she’s not pleased with him). Lucas tells Eric that Maya teases him every day, Eric asks why, and he doesn’t answer. Zay straight up says he’d like to know why, but there’s no response from Lucas. Guys, these episodes are only 21, 22 minutes long; literally every minute is important. The fact they spent time on this exchange is very, very telling! Alarm bells should be going off for the audience right now.
Also, there’s this exchange, from Lucas to Maya: “You want to tangle with me?” “Not yet.” HMMM.
Rules: Here we’ve got what is inarguably the flirtiest moment between any two characters of the entire series. If you watched the shirt grab/street cred scene out of context, you’d assume these two characters were together, or at least each other’s love interests. It’s that obvious.
Also, Lucas runs off to Mayaville, leaving RileyTown in the dust.
New Teacher: Maya makes fun of Lucas for riding a sheep, which is some clever as hell foreshadowing. This is also the episode where Auggie’s reading Archie comments and asks if two girls who like the same boy can stay friends. More foreshadowing, even though it’s not strictly a Lucaya moment.
Yearbook: Lucas and Maya win Best Couple in the yearbook. The whole class ships them (they’re like fire!) and while Maya’s a little surprised by all of this, neither she nor Lucas react all that strongly to it. Suuuuuper interesting Lucas doesn’t reassure Riley about it.
Creativity: This is a huge one, guys. Maybe one of the biggest pre-Texas episodes for them.
Lucas is very passionate about not wanting to lose the arts program for Maya’s sake. He calls her a great artist, and says (and I quote): “Well, I don’t want [the arts program getting cut] for Maya. I want Maya to be happy.”
They hold each other’s gaze for so long that Zay, our #1 Lucaya stan, actually comments on it. Riley finally notices. Zay also reveals in this episode that Lucas referred to Maya as the Blonde Beauty. Maya is surprised and Lucas is suuuuper uncomfortable.
Cory & Topanga: This is a major signal of how Maya feels. We see a cute Corpanga flashback, where they high five and it’s obvious they both feel sparks.
After this flashback, Maya tries to chase Farkle, but Lucas intercepts and guides her back to her chair. Maya turns to look at him with a bewildered look on her face, but doesn’t say anything. To directly contrast this, Maya and Farkle later high five and she straight up says she doesn’t feel anything.
Rah Rah: A final pre-Texas flirt moment. While watching Riley try out for cheerleading, Lucas covers Maya’s eyes while leaning in and ducking behind her. Just in case we needed another clue that these two are more than okay with being physically close with each other.
Also, this scene takes place in the gym. It’s funny to contrast this to that scene in Flaws, where Maya jumps on his back and he tells her to get off. It also takes place in the gym. Not that important, but I wanted to point out how far along these two have come!
Anyway, and that’s it. We arrive at Texas after this episode, when the beans get spilled and everything’s out in the open. So, let’s put it all together and see what can gleam from it.
Early on in the season, we see massive, anvil-sized hints that Lucas lets Maya tease him because he likes her. Right after that, we’re given the biggest flirt moment of the series, and following that is foreshadowing of the triangle. None of this is a coincidence.
If that’s not enough, things continue to ramp up even more. Lucas is passionate about supporting Maya and announcing to the whole class he wants her to be happy, which is way more than he’s ever done for Riley, his supposed OTP. We see later on Maya realizing she feels something for Lucas when he touches her, and in case you missed the hint the first time, they circle back to it by contrasting her reaction to Farkle. Remember what I said about how literally every minute counts during a 21/22ish minute show? Yeah, this Lucaya moment was a big deal. Same thing with the prolonged eye contact in Creativity - they spent time on Zay commenting on it, Riley noticing it, and of course, on the moment itself. If you can spin that some other way, I’d love to hear it.
(It’s interesting to me that they signalled Lucas’s feelings first, earlier in the season, and Maya’s feelings much closer to the big reveal. I personally think the GM Cory & Topanga moment was sort of a final “hey everyone, in case you haven’t pieced it together yet, here you go” situation, but that’s just my take.)
Before I wrap this up, I wanted to say that it’s a shame Belief was post-Texas. It has some amazing stuff in it in terms of both Lucaya and Riarkle, so I think I’ll do a separate post on it. The core four’s dynamics this season were very interesting, with Belief being among the most telling. So that post, as well as some Riarkle stuff, is in the works!
As promised, the non-essential Lucaya moments of this season:
-Lucas being thrilled about Maya’s middle name being revealed (New World)
-Maya somehow knowing Lucas’s grandpa is called Pappy Joe (Pluto)
-Mr. Squirrels Goes to Washington: Maya calls Lucas by his name for once and says, somewhat sweetly, she’s always known his name. Lucas is pleased. She calls him Lucas a lot in this season.
-Semi-Formal: Lucas gets all flustered when he realizes he’s dancing with Maya
-RileyTown: Lucas is chosen to be on Maya’s side of the duel in case he needs to “contain” her. It’s another cute flirty moment. Maya is impressed by/attracted to Lucas’s strength.

Snow
Tumblr media
For @thefanficfaerie‘s OTP Challenge (2020)     Words: 836 Pairing: Steve Rogers x Reader     Prompt: Winter Wonderland: Day 6 - Snow Summary: It’s the first snow of the season & Reader is eager to enjoy every minute of it. She does her best to drag Steve out of bed, he willingly comes along without much protest. When it’s time to head inside, Steve has some plans of his own.
Tumblr media
“Iiiit’s beginning to look a lot like Christmaaaaas! Everyyyywhere you go!” You bellowed loudly, out of key and off tempo. Steve covered his ears and laughed just as loud from his spot in bed.
“Is this going to be my alarm for the next nineteen days?” He asked, moving his hands away from his face.
“Only if there’s snow on the ground.” You proclaimed. You threw open the curtains of your bedroom so that Steve could see the blanket of white covering your front lawn. “I love snow.” You sighed happily.
“Wait a minute, I thought you hated snow.” He recalled before dragging himself up into a sitting position.
“I do, but we’re enjoying the little things this year remember! So, get your snow gear on, Honey.” You leapt onto the bed and attempted to shove Steve out of it.
“Okay, I’m going, I’m going.” He smirked. As you gave him another gentle shove, Steve pretended that you successfully pushed him off the bed. He crashed to the floor with a hard thud.
“So dramatic!” You rolled your eyes, you leaned over the side of bed and peeked down at him. “You okay down there, old man?” You teased him.
“If you’re trying to kill me for my life insurance, it’s going to take a lot more than that.” He informed you, finally getting to his feet.
“Okay, last one dressed has to shovel the walk!” You declared before sprinting out of the bedroom.
“Wait, that’s not fair! You’re already dressed!” He called after you.
You put on your winter jacket and pulled the hood up over your head. You tucked your feet into your fur lined boots and opened the front door. You were immediately met with a blast of icy cool air so cold it had you reconsider going out there. With a determined huff you stepped outside. You had to get out there and inspect the quality of the snow before Steve.
There was a large oak tree that sat off the corner. You sat in front of it and got to work building a snow mound. This would be your primary line of defense for what you had planned next. You’d managed a semi-circle about four inches tall before Steve stepped out of the front door.
“What are you doing over there?” He called out to you and fat fluffy flakes continued to flutter to the ground.
“Definitely not building a snow fort.” You answered before hastily trying to pack more snow into your semi-circle structure. Steve edge closer to you, inspecting your snow fort.
“Good foundation.” He appraised. “You covered your blind spot by pressing your back against the tree. But, I have one tactical advantage over you.” He bent down and scooped a fist full of snow. “You’re not protected against arial attacks!” He proclaimed before tossing a perfectly formed snowball at you.
“Ah, no!” You tried to duck but it was no use. The snow made contact with your shoulder and burst into powder. “That’s not fair! My fort’s not done yet.”
“All is fair in love and war, isn’t that how the saying goes?” Steve disagreed.
“Well, since it seems you have some tactical advantages, both your height and your ability to make basically perfect snowballs, I guess I’ll have to employ a new strategy.” You decided.
“Oh? What’s that?” Steve asked.
“Over taking you with rapid fire!” You had several small, imperfect snowballs that you lobbed at Steve as quickly as you could.
From that point forward the war was on. You and Steve chased each other around the yard trying your hardest to avoid getting hit while still landing your mark. Steve was of course not running at his full speed to give you a fair chance, which actually meant you were winning. The icy air filled your lungs, and the muscles in your legs burned as you tried to sprint through the now ankle-deep snow. When you finally felt like you couldn’t run anymore you collapsed to the ground, letting the snow cushion your fall.
“Great idea, Darling.” Steve walked over, not out of breath at all, and dropped down next to you. “Snow Angels.” He smiled waving his arms and legs in the snow.
“Too tired for that.” You breathed.
“Well, I know what we can do instead.” Steve propped himself up on his elbows. “How about we go inside, I draw you a nice hot bath to get you warmed up?”
“Mmm, that sounds nice.” You agreed. “Too bad I’m too tired to move right now.”
“I could carry you in.” He offered. You felt one of his hands find its way to yours. “Maybe help you get undressed, stick around to make sure you don’t drown.”
“So you’ll get in the tub with me?” You asked looking over at him.
“Purely for safety reasons.” He assured you.
“Oh of course.” You nodded. “And what if I told you that was my plan all along?”
“I’d say great minds think alike.” He smiled.

G - Do you remember your first OTP, if so who was in it
Oh, like, ever???? From any fandom???? Oh boy... We're going deep diving, folks. The first real ship I think I ever loved was from Person of Interest. Psychotic Hacker Lady x Sociopathic Assassin Lady :) "Like a four alarm fire in an oil refinery" "Sounds cozy" 😆
M - Say something genuinely nice about a ship that you don’t ship (or its shippers, or anything related to you)
Oh! I'm not a Monochrome fan, but literally all the art I've seen for it is 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻 apparently a very talented part of the fandom and we love that!!!
O - Choose a song at random, which ship or character does it remind you of
OHHHH WE TALKED ABOUT THIS IN THE SERVER THE OTHER DAY BUT HISTORY HAS ITS EYES ON YOU IS SUCH AN OZCARNATION SONG OMG. Also a fucking bop
"YOU HAVE NO CONTROL WHO LIVES, WHO DIES, WHO TELLS YOUR STORY"
CRYING
R - A pairing you ship that you don’t think anyone else ships
I only really ship like six ships and I know for a fact they all have followings, no matter how small. So.... None? 😅

Tagged by @chyrstis! Doing Sharky and Mattie for this one...
Tumblr media
(art by @ziorre)
DISAGREEMENTS
Who is more likely to raise their voice? Neither one of them really yells at the other one. Sharky’s voice is naturally louder, but Mattie’s more likely to speak sharply.
Who threatens to leave but never actually does? Neither of them. Mattie wouldn’t threaten that because it’s mean, and it would really hurt Sharky’s feelings, and threatening that would never cross Sharky’s mind.
Who actually keeps their word and leaves? Neither.
Who trashes the house? Sharky’s naturally messier. If Mattie was away for a while, he’d forget to clean up after himself the whole time and spend HOURS before she showed back up trying to make sure everything’s perfect again.
Do either of them get physical? Never ever. Sharky would rather die than hit his partner, and Mattie would leave the second that ever happened.
How often do they argue/disagree? Not super often? They have minor disagreements occasionally, mostly about how to handle life in the post-apocalyptic world.
Who is the first to apologize? Sharky. Usually, he’s just sad about it and wants them to be done arguing, and whatever they were disagreeing about isn’t important enough for them to keep going with it.
SEX
Who is on top? Sharky’s the penetrating partner, but Mattie’s more dominant.
Who is on the bottom? See above!
Who has the strangest desires? We all know who has the weird desires in a Sharky ship.
Any kinks? Not in particular? Sharky’s up for almost anything, but he’s not going to bring it up if he thinks Mattie won’t like it. Mmm, I forgot some stuff I decided Sharky likes, but it’s gross and I’m not talking about it.
Who’s dominant in bed? Mattie for sure.
Is head ever in the equation? Like, all the time.
If so, who is better at performing it? It’s not that Mattie’s bad, it’s just that Sharky’s really, really good.
Ever had sex in public? Not where people could catch them, but they’ve definitely had sex outside. Like, a lot. Especially once they’re living their best post-bunker lives.
Who moans the most? They’re both loud and gross.
Who leaves the most marks? Sharky for sure. He likes to see the evidence that they’ve been together, and he likes that she’s proud to show them off a little.
Who is the more experienced of the two? Sharky’s had more partners, but Mattie’s probably had more sex.
Do they ‘fuck’ or ‘make love’? Make love, mostly
Rough or soft? Usually soft, but not always. Sometimes you just gotta fuck.
How long do they usually last? I'm not really sure how to answer this? As long as it takes, I guess. Sometimes they like to tease.
Is protection used? Mattie’s not on any hormonal birth control. They use condoms until the condoms run out, and then they just try to make sure Sharky pulls out. Uh, they have a whole baby when they make it back out into the real world.
Does it ever get boring? Never.
Where is the strangest place they’d have sex? Things don’t really get weirder than in the bunker with Sharky’s whole family.
FAMILY
Do they plan on having children/or have children? They both wanted kids eventually, but they didn’t want them as soon as they had one. Harrison was definitely an accident, and Mattie doesn’t exactly love being pregnant. Sharky likes it more than she does, honestly.
If so, how many children do they want/have? They end up with four. Harrison who was the accident, then they on purpose have Ian, Ripley, and Max all about four or so years apart.
AFFECTION
Who likes to cuddle? Both of them! They are so gross about it. Disgusting.
Who gets naughty in the most inappropriate of places? They’re both always down to clown.
Who struggles to keep their hands to themself? Mattie, but Sharky’s not exactly upset about it.
How long can they cuddle until one becomes uncomfortable? Sharky sometimes gets too hot, but he doesn’t want to tell her to go away. They both soak it right up.
Who gives the most kisses? Mattie loves those smooches.
What is their favourite non-sexual activity? They like cuddling and just hanging out together. They’d watch movies if they still had access to all of that.
Where is their favourite place to cuddle? The couch or their bed.
How often do they get time to themselves? Less often the older they get. They almost always have little kids around, and then the Highwaymen come to the county and it’s a whole damn thing.
SLEEPING
Who snores? Sharky. Mattie does only when she’s pregnant.
If both do, who snores the loudest? Mattie.
Do they share a bed or sleep separately? They share. They’re all over each other.
If they sleep together, do they cozy up together or lay far apart? They cozy right the fuck up, especially in winter.
What do they wear to bed? Ideally, nothing, but usually shorts and t-shirts because of kids and roommates (Hurk).
Are either of them insomniacs? Sharky is. He has a hard time shutting his brain off enough to fall asleep, and once he wakes up in the middle of the night, he has a hard time relaxing again.
Can sleeping pills be found by the bedside? Nah.
Do they wrap their limbs around each other or just lay side by side? Oh wrapped up for sure.
Who wakes up with bed hair? They both do, but Mattie has more hair so sometimes it’s crazier.
Who wakes up first? If Sharky is still asleep when the sun comes up, then Mattie gets up first. If Sharky’s going to be awake early, it’s because he woke up randomly at four am and decided to start his day.
Who prepares breakfast in bed for the other? Mattie’s not bringing him breakfast, but he’ll do it for her sometimes.
What is their favourite sleeping position? Spooning! Or Sharky on his back and Mattie on top of him like a starfish.
Do they set an alarm each night? Mattie would, but they don’t need to.
Can a television be found in their bedroom? Sharky would LOVE to have a TV on 24/7.
Who has nightmares? They both do, especially after everything they’ve been through with the cult situation.
Who has ridiculous dreams? Sharky, definitely.
Who sprawls out and takes up most of the bed? Sharky’s just a bigger person, but Mattie doesn’t care because she wants to touch as much of him as possible anyway.
Who makes the bed? Who has time for that, really?
What time is bed time? Whenever they get sleepy!
Any routines/rituals before bed? They read to the kids (or tell made-up stories) and then get some good snuggle time in.
Who’s the grumpiest when they wake up? Sharky is, if he didn’t wake up naturally.
WORK
Who is the busiest? Mattie
Who rakes in the highest income? It’s hard to say under this situation
Are any of them unemployed? Technically they both are. It’s the apocalypse!
Who takes the most sick days? Mattie gets sick slightly more often, but they can’t really take sick days
Who is more likely to turn up late to work? Sharky's way worse at keeping time
Who sucks up to their boss? Sharky would be, but it’s totally unintentional
What are their jobs? They’re just like. Survivors.
Who stresses the most? It depends on the situation, really? They stress about different things.
Do they enjoy or despise their careers/occupations? Mattie misses some of the comforts of pre-war, but Sharky loves how things are now. It’s the ideal situation for him.
Are they financially stable? They don’t go hungry, so yes.
HOME
Who does the washing? Mattie has more patience for doing a good job.
Who takes out the trash? They both do. They have to be careful about it because of the wild animal situation.
Who does the ironing? Who has time to iron?
Who does the cooking? Mattie is better at cooking, but they take turns with it.
Who is more likely to burn the house down just trying? Sharky, obviously
Who is messier? Sharky
Who leaves the toilet roll empty? Sharky but totally unintentionally
Who leaves their dirty clothes on the floor? Sharky, but again, unintentionally
Who forgets to flush the toilet? I’m not sure there are working toilets in the post-apocalyptic world, so...
Who is the prankster around the house? Sharky would be
Who loses the car keys when it comes time to go somewhere? Sharky loses them all the time. He just puts them down and forgets where.
Who mows the lawn? There’s not a lot of need for lawn care.
Who answers the telephone? Mattie would
Who does the vacuuming? They’ll both sweep the house when it needs to be swept
Who does the groceries? Sharky will go out on supply runs more often than Mattie, but it’s because they want her to stay with the kids.
Who takes the longest to shower? It depends on whether or not Sharky wants to jerk off.
MISCELLANEOUS
Is money a problem? Nah
How many cars do they own? They always have at least one working vehicle, and usually others they can break apart for scrap
Do they own their home or do they rent? Well, they say possession is 9/10ths of the law, so...
Do they live in the city or in the country? Country.
Do they enjoy their surroundings? Honestly? They really do.
What’s their song? Burn Like A Star Fire by Sleeping Wolf
What do they do when they’re away from each other? Basically whatever they have to do before they can get back together. Just what needs to be done -- taking care of the kids, supply runs, etc.
Where did they first meet? Same way it happens in-game. She finds him in the Moonflower and he falls in love immediately.
Who spends the most money when out shopping? Sharky's more impulsive about it, but there’s not a lot of actual purchasing happening? It’s more like grabbing whatever he thinks they need or would be fun.
Who’s more likely to flash their assets? Sharky for sure.
Who finds it amusing when the other trips over themselves? As long a there isn’t an actual injury, they both think it’s pretty funny.
Any mental issues? Mattie’s absurdly resilient mentally. She has nightmares from the cult situation, but only when she’s already otherwise stressed, and she has some minor PPD after the babies, but overall she’s really mentally healthy. Sharky has some ADHD issues, but nothing that’s holding him back now.
Who’s terrified of bugs? Mattie, but moreso because she doesn’t want anyone catching any weird germs from them.
Who kills the spiders around the house? Whoever sees it first.
Their favourite place? At home together.
Who pays the bills? No bills after the end of the world, but they work together to provide for their family.
Do they have any fears for their future? The future is incredibly uncertain. They’re always worried about illness or injury that wouldn’t have been serious before but is now, and that only heightens when the Highwaymen come around.
Who’s more likely to surprise the other with a fancy dinner? Mattie, just because she’s better at planning ahead for it.
Who’s the tallest? Sharky.
Who’s more likely to just randomly hop into the shower with the other? They’ll both do this, but I’m going to say Mattie probably does it more regularly.
Who wanders around in their underwear? Sharky more than Mattie.
Who sings the loudest when singing along to the radio? Sharky does everything louder lol
What do they tease each other about? Everything, honestly. It’s a fun relationship
Who is more likely to cringe at the other’s fashion sense at times? Mattie 100%. She loves Sharky, but... let’s be honest. The New Dawn look? Not great.
Who crushed first? Sharky fell had and fell fast, but Mattie wasn’t all that long behind him
Any alcohol or substance related problems? Sharky probably drinks a little more heavily than is healthy, but it’s not an abuse problem
Who is more likely to stumble home, drunk, at 3am? Uh, well, Sharky.
Who swears the most? They both swear a lot. They try to clean up for the kids, but... it’s hard.

Hidden Guardians of Humanity
VRAINS Rarepair Weeks 2018 - Day 7: Other YGO series crossover/Other Fandom AU
Summary: Six teenagers regularly save the world from the misanthropic virus-like AI XANA on a virtual world. This is their story through one of these missions against humanity's greatest danger yet.
Fandoms: Yu-Gi-Oh! VRAINS/Code Lyoko Ships: Hireshipping (Ema/Akira), Entrustshipping (Takeru/Kiku), Zinniashipping (Miyu/Aoi)
Wordcount: 3.8K words
Notes: "On ira, on saura, sauver notre existence, Se donner une chance de tout dépasser. On ira, on saura, sauver notre existence, Afin de faire, Un monde sans danger !"
I was stumbled at first with what to do for today. All the crossover ideas I had weren't very good... until I thought about Code Lyoko and how it was a perfect fit with VRAINS. A virtual world? Check. Keeping stuff secret from other people? Check. A recurring theme of AIs? Check. I rediscovered CL this year by watching the episodes now all up on YT (I think that's only for the original French dub, though). It's been a big part of my childhood and I surprised myself to like it even more as an adult. It was pretty messed up if you think about it: a bunch of teenagers ranging from 13 to 15 saving the world in secret on a daily basis while risking their lives to do so? That's dark for a kid's show dude. The series wasn't hiding it anyway: I can't count the exact number of ways XANA (a big bad virus-like AI) tried to kill the protagonists in. Anyway.
I changed a few settings. Kadic is supposed to be a middle school (collège), but since it's supposed to be a high school too (funny enough, the school it's based on, the Lycée Lakanal, is where I set a part of my original work), well why not. It fitted much better with the VRAINS cast too. I also took some liberties with the original 2003 run of the show to provide more modern technology like smartphones.
This story is, in short, a love letter to Code Lyoko and to my VRAINS OTPs. I may have forgotten to put the romance into that fic though.
PS. The quote in the beginning is the chorus to the Code Lyoko opening, "Un Monde Sans Danger" (A World Without Dangers). That song has been burnt into my soul ever since I was a kid.
Event hosted by @vrainsrarepairweeks
AO3 version available here.
It was yet another day of class at Kadic High School, Boulogne-Billancourt, Hauts-de-Seine. Nothing out of the ordinary, for once: boring Physics lessons, typical teenage drama, rumours going through the school about teachers and students alike. In that, it made no difference to any other day before it and any other day that would come after it. However, the routine was only a façade in this school near Paris.
Very few knew about the shortcut in the heater room of the dormitory or the one in the school’s park leading the abandoned factory nearby, resting in an island in the Seine. Most people would have just assumed that place was, well, abandoned and empty. The fact was that: that was wrong. That fact was proven untrue by the presence of a bunch of teenagers going there to save the world on a daily basis.
However, today was a tranquil day in class of rumours and drama. There was always Naoki Shima spreading some kind of rumour on his idol, an e-sport player named Playmaker, which was mostly talked about by fangirls of him around the campus. Meanwhile, a little group of six students was gathering in their usual spot: near the coffee machine, on a bench, waiting for bell never to ring the beginning of classes.
They had formed this little group of friends of theirs in unlikely circumstances. It all started when Ema, from the twelfth-grade class majoring in computer sciences, discovered a way to access the abandoned factory in the river easily after a boring day of school. She apparently had to drag with her Akira, her classmate and a friend since middle school, there. Afterwards, they accidentally dragged with them Aoi, Akira’s younger sister in tenth grade, when she followed them to the factory on one day and stuck with them ever since. With Aoi came her own classmates Takeru and Kiku, who followed suit after they themselves found out about the factory by being friendly to the otherwise isolated Aoi.
“Hey, guys,” Takeru opened the conversation as he looked at the other students in the courtyard. “It’s been a while since XANA last attacked… You think he’s going to come back soon?”
“I hope not,” Kiku replied with the most honesty in the world. “He almost killed sent everyone to space last time… We were lucky you were competing in the martial arts tournament that time, Takeru!”
“XANA will always come back until the Supercomputer isn’t turned off, I’m afraid,” Akira stated as he came back with two cups of coffee in his hands.
“Then that means you need to find the program to materialize Miyu soon!” Ema enthusiastically added as she thanked Akira for the cup of coffee. “It’s on me next time.”
“I’m doing what I can, but it’s going to take longer than expected. Last night was a fluke again,” he sighed as he rubbed his eyes with the hand not busy holding a cup. The yawn would be for another day.
“It’s fine, big brother,” Aoi simply said as she looked at him with a tiny smile. “You’re already doing your best, and Miyu has told us that before.”
“Your sister is right, Akira, don’t overexert yourself for that! I don’t want to recover your unconscious body on the floor of your room again and almost get scolded by Jim again for sneaking into the boys’ dorm for that!”
Takeru and Kiku simply giggled at the anecdote despite how many times Ema had already told them about it.
During Maths class, as usual, Ema was on her phone during yet another boring lecture from the teacher. There had to be someone watching over Lyoko when nobody could be at the factory in case an activated tower, XANA’s gateway to their world and all the potential damage that would always bring with it, showed up in the virtual world. That was a nice way to spend time: instead of sitting through a painfully tedious session of mathematics, she could just chat with Miyu and whoever else was online. It was funnier to be there and occasionally see Akira stare at her to be serious during a class for once.
He only didn’t ask her to stop on the spot because she otherwise could refuse to lend him their philosophy lessons whenever he’d simply stop understanding most of it. The confusing words and concepts didn’t work very well with his arithmetic brain. It was a fine compromise, though.
Right when she was about to point out something funny Aoi had said in the chatroom with Miyu, she heard a strange buzzing sound. The neon over their hands started flickering ever so slightly, before the infection spread to the entire ceiling of the classroom.
“You know what this means?” she asked Akira in a whisper.
“A XANA attack. Did Miyu tell you about an activated tower?”
Her eyes immediately darted to the screen, only for a message to confirm their fears. Akira didn’t add anything more.
“Then what excuse do we throw?” she asked again, eyeing the little app she had on her phone she had freshly finished programming in her spare time (or whatever was left of it these days).
Before she could ask anything, the bell rang. Their eyes bolted in different directions, checking for two different parameters: hers to the teacher, his to the hour on his phone. The former didn’t have a watch, the second didn’t match the time class ended at. As everyone was packing their things together to change classrooms, another ring resonated through the corridors: the fire alarm.
“Okay, it’s definitely a XANA attack”, Akira stated the obvious. “Warn everyone to meet together at the factory before we can get spotted by teachers or monitors.”
“Roger that.”
It always took some time to reach the factory and gather everyone. That was why they had this habit of only meeting in the main computer room instead of in front of the factory, giving them more time to fight against whatever XANA had to throw at them on Lyoko. Akira and Ema had arrived first and launched themselves in the elevator to the main rooms before getting joined by Aoi shortly thereafter.
“Takeru and Kiku will be a bit late,” she told them, “I think they had class on a higher floor and had more troubles exiting the school.”
Moments after, the three had taken their respective spots: Akira at the main computer, Ema and Aoi in the cylindrical scans on the floor under the computer room. He had never been a man of actions and was the only one with a real knowledge of how to use the technical beast that was the Supercomputer. Meanwhile, Ema had always loved the thrill of action: fighting creatures on Lyoko was good way for her to exhort her thirst for a way to break away from the real world, even if it was just for a few minutes. Aoi was calmer, but still followed through when she learnt this could help both her brother and the friend she had found in Miyu.
“Are you ready to get virtualized?” he asked them as they set foot in the room, footsteps resonating on the iron floor.
“Of course!” Ema replied with thrill in her voice.
“I am,” Aoi responded more seriously.
“Then let’s get on with it.”
Four scanners presented themselves to the two girls. Each climbing in one, the virtualization process didn’t take more than thirty seconds anymore. They were used to it: getting transferred inside a virtual world wasn’t painful, at best it was dizzying the first few times. Soon enough, Aoi and Ema found themselves in a forest-like environment, all changed up to battle attire. It wasn’t just for show: if Aoi had wings, it was because she could use them to fly. Ema, who hadn’t design herself in her subconscious mind to get those, was kind of envious.
“Miyu should be nearby waiting for backup,” Akira’s voice arrived from the sky of Lyoko’s Forest territory. “Be careful to monsters, XANA has been waiting for us.”
“As usual,” Ema sighed, amused. “Let’s do this, Aoi.”
As they ran to their destination, a tower with a red halo, a girl with long pink hair in pigtails and blue eyes joined them. Aoi’s eyes started to shimmer as soon as they noticed her coming towards them, changing her sprinting direction to directly meet up with their friend. They had a habit of hugging each other as soon as they saw each other too. They had gotten more and more physical when meeting up in Lyoko, to the point of holding each other’s hands nowadays when seeing the others. Ema was certain that, would Miyu know about love like any other girl (despite being a sentient AI that was, frankly, more human than some actual humans she knew), they would already be dating. She remembered overhearing Aoi train herself to declare her love to her friend in her dorm room, after all.
“I’m glad to know you’re alright, Miyu!” Aoi told her as they went back to reaching the tower.
“Thank you for coming so quickly, Aoi, Ema! XANA has sent three Bloks who are guarding the tower, we need to be careful!”
Turning her eyes away from the two friends, Ema noticed one of the Bloks shooting at them.
“Out of the way!!”
Pushing Aoi and Miyu out of the line of fire from the creature sent to them, she took a direct hit to the shoulder from a laser beam, falling to the ground. Trying to shoot back with her own laser arrows at the creature, she was at least relieved to see Aoi and Miyu had made it behind a tree to find a way to shelter themselves from the incoming attacks.
“Ema!!” Aoi’s scream was accompanied by the mirror of Miyu’s mirror reflecting the hit the older girl was about to take, which would have certainly devirtualized her. The Blok took the hit right in its eye, exploding shortly after.
The commotion from this encounter passed, the three girls hid behind the very same tree. There were mock Bloks in the area, almost twice as much as they had first expected. As she watched from behind their little hiding spot, Ema could only notice this would be harder than expected with Miyu virtually unable to fight for herself and herself having taken a hit already.
“That was such a close call!” Miyu sighed in relief. “We really need to be more careful…”
She was holding onto Aoi’s hand as she said so, her sceptre in her other hand. Nobody knew where that weapon came from, really, but they had brushed it off as a mere way to self-defend against XANA’s monsters who, as it turned out, mostly used laser beams with long ranges to attempt ending her own life.
“Let’s be more careful until Takeru and Kiku can get here,” Aoi decided, with the two others nodding in agreement.
“Sorry we’re late…!” Takeru said as he entered the main computer room, breathless.
Akira immediately turned around, his one-ear headphone-microphone still on, a smirk drawing on his face. Backup was finally here.
“Jim tried to prevent us from reaching the factory when we tried to go through the heater room shortcut,” Kiku further explained.
“I see. Ema and Aoi required backup, there’s apparently too many monsters for them to deal with.
She glanced at her childhood friend whose back was against the wall, still not recovering his breath.
“Are you okay, Takeru?” she asked with concern all over her tone, hands on her chest.
“I… I’ll be fine… Let’s get to the scanners quickly, I’m sure Aoi, Ema and Miyu need our help…”
Even if nobody added anything, Akira turning back to the monitor to make sure this wasn’t a burning failure yet, Kiku remained worried. As the elevator went down another floor, she couldn’t get her eyes off Takeru and how flimsy his breathing was. He had never had a pristine health record, and that despite how good he was at martial arts, which made it so she was always concerned in some degree for his condition.
When the doors opened to reveal the scanner room, she handed her friend her help. He gave her a slight smile, a quiet way to tell her not to worry, as they climbed into their own cylinders to get virtualized. There was no time to lose and no time to get concerned for Takeru when there was a tower to deactivate and XANA going on a rampage to make everyone deaf by the end of the day through abusing ringing systems, ringtones and speakers.
The two soon enough ended in the Forest territory of Lyoko, with instructions given by Akira to join back the others. Running on their legs, the virtualization keeping them away from whatever feeling of physical fatigue they’d have felt from that, they soon noticed the group of monsters blocking the way and their friends behind a big tree.
“Oh, looks like XANA did already send a party,” Takeru noticed. “Let’s be sneaky and see if we can end them without Miyu being targeted by them.”
“Agreed.”
 “Takeru! Kiku!”
Miyu seemed ecstatic to see them arrive, screaming their names in joy. Only then did she put her hand on her month, remembering XANA’s monsters could hear them. It was easy to make a diversion, but that was it.
“Akira!” Ema yelled to the sky to get their control tower’s attention. “How much enemies are they?”
No response.
“Oh God, that’s bad,” she then spoke to herself. “He must have been knocked away from the main panel.”
“Something happened to my brother?” Aoi panicked immediately thereafter, before clutching Miyu’s hand to keep her calm.
“It may have,” Kiku added as she joined them. “One of us needs to go check.”
They stared at each other, before Ema decided to take the head of things.
“Okay, I’ve got a plan. Aoi, you stay with Miyu to make sure she arrives to the tower in one piece! I’m going with Takeru to face them directly, while Kiku shoots them from the back. I’ve already taken a hit and Takeru has a powerful long-range weapon. Everyone’s good with that?”
“Roger!” Everyone replied in unison as they split in groups.
Ema had in her mind the secret hope of being devirtualized immediately. Takeru had less health point than she did, but she had already taken a hit and was the only one with any knowledge of the Supercomputer outside of Akira who seemed to spend a huge chunk of his nights on it. It was a perfect match for who had to go back to the real world to check on their friends.
She could see Kiku in her white kimono-like robe, braid flowing through the air as she ran and ran, in the corner of her eye running behind Bloks to stab them with her spear in their top eye, jumping on them, braid going up and down, causing their own self-destruction. She was clearly always going for those targeting Takeru, in a nice touch. The boy was himself with her throwing fire at the enemies, either to blind them or critically damage them.
In the corner of her other, Miyu and Aoi ran with their fingers intertwined, the latter with her own weapon out, ready to jump into action if needed. It was a safer solution for them than for Aoi to hold Miyu as she flew over the battlefield just in case she’d get shot in the wings: would that happen, they’d both take considerable fall damage and risk getting devirtualized. The possibility meaning the death of Miyu if it took place, they preferred to stay safe and go a bit slower. Good stuff there.
Because she wasn’t paying all her attention to monsters, Ema quickly found herself to be devirtualized by a second hit in the chest, making her virtual body shatter in pixels before she could resurface in the factory.
Exiting the scanner after getting forcefully devirtualized wasn’t the best feeling in the world, but Ema had no time for dizziness. She ran as fast as possible to the elevator and rushed her hands over the panel to go to the upper floor. They weren’t strangers to XANA using towers to gain access to the real world. In fact, they were even used to Akira getting attacked as to hinder the progress of those on Lyoko. The question was: what had it done to her friend while she was away in the virtual world?
As soon as the door opened, she realized two things: XANA had used a severed electric cable to do its deed, and Akira was unconscious the floor because of it. Her first thought was to rush to his side, to check if he was doing fine. A hand on his wrist, another on his forehead, and her eyes half-focused on the severed cable which now looked as inert as it should be, she let out a sigh of relief when she heard his pulse.
“You scared us again, you idiot,” she muttered under her breath. “Now, if you’ll excuse me, I need to keep an eye on an important mission.”
She gently half-sat Akira against a nearby wall and jumped into the chair facing the screens monitoring everything. Embracing the control tower nature of it all, she picked the headphone and put it on her ear.
“Anyone, you’re receiving me? It’s Ema!”
Everyone or so replied positively.
“Lemme see…” Her eyes deciphered as much information as they possibly could on the monitors. “Takeru, you’re down to 20HP, be careful! One hit and you’re sent back home! Kiku, there should be a Blok behind you! Aoi, Miyu, you’re near the tower, you may be able to fly there…”
She interrupted herself when she saw the cable rise back to life, just as she heard everyone call out for Takeru’s voice. Getting down to her feet, taking a fighting stance, she hoped to be able to fight it back enough to have the time for the boy to reach her room. She knew how to activate the Return to the Past to fix all the damage the buildings around the school must have taken from the excessive sound, if the fact she was able to hear some low-quality rap music from the underground rooms of a factory was any indication, but Takeru didn’t.
Avoiding getting tripped by jumping over the cable’s feet, she was relieved to hear Takeru running towards her. He looked a bit out of breath from running so quickly in so little time, but he took his own fighting stance.
“Ema, get to the computer! I’m sure the others need you there!”
Nodding to him as to confirm his decisions, she jumped back into the chair to see the information: Kiku was close to devritualization with a mere ten HP remaining while Miyu was just about to enter the tower. Trying her hardest to ignore how one-sided Takeru’s fight against the cable was becoming in favour of XANA, she focused on the screens. The boy’s pained scream when his back slammed against the wall didn’t help. Before she could entirely redirect her focus, Kiku had been defeated by a last laser beam.
“Aoi, be careful, Kiku just got eliminated!”
“We know,” the brown-haired girl replied from the other side of the screen. “Miyu is entering the tower now, I’ll try to keep back the last enemies until she can deactivate it!”
“Good, but please make it quick, Akira got stunned and Takeru may be injured from fighting a cable. I’m afraid I’ll be the next, not going to lie there.”
Kiku soon joined the scene, judging from the elevator’s doors opening again and her little steps rushing to Takeru’s side.
“Ki… Kiku…” His weakened voice tried to warn his friend. “Don’t… Come here…”
Without a word, avoiding getting knocked back by the giant cable, she kneeled next to him, her gaze soon fixated on her friend rather than the incoming danger.
“Are you alright, Takeru?!”
“I… I think I’ve broken something against it… But it’s gonna be fine,  don’t worry… I’m sure Miyu is about to deactivate the tower…” He gave a timid but warm smile to her.
She gently held him against her, a half-felt one on her lips…
“It’s going to be fine. It’s always going to be fine.”
Judging from Takeru’s weak grip, she knew his hand had been broken in his fight against the machine.
Entering the tower, Miyu made her way as fast as possible to the little panel presented in every tower. As soon as she put her hand on it, the system automatically recognized her, greeting her with the ever same and cold protocol.
MIYU
CODE: LYOKO
The entire tower progressively turned empty as it deactivated. From this little virtual pseudo-cocoon, she could only hope as she looked down everything was fine outside.
Soon enough, the familiar energy wave of the Return to the Past resonated through the virtual world, making her smile as she thought that, once again, everything would be fine and that they had all saved the day.
They were back in the same Maths class, which was still boring, still not interesting. A side effect of using the Return to the Past, obviously. At least, she could safely say that
“Hey, do you remember what happened to you before you got unconscious earlier?” she asked trying to hide her concern.
“I got electricized by a cable, that’s all I can remember. It doesn’t matter much anyway, the Return to the Past cancels every injury we could have sustained.”
“Well, that’s fortunate for Takeru, he broke his hand when fighting the cable.”
Akira suddenly looked very pensive, before having a sort of epiphany flashing on his face.
“That makes me think… I should teach you how to use the Supercomputer, Ema, in case this ever happens again,” he whispered to her.
“I’m not against it. I already know how to use it, as you can see, but you could show me your… special tricks.”
The slight innuendo was enough to make him redden in a moment and look to the side.
“D-don’t phrase it like that…”
She grinned at his embarrassment. He was way too easy to tease, but it was always so much fun.
“Oh, by the way,” she added, “your sister is probably going to get a girlfriend soon, and she won’t even be material unless you come up with your program.”
“E… Excuse me?!”
“Miyu. She’s in love with Miyu and vice-versa. It’s just that you’re never here to see them flirt with each other knowingly or not.”
“Oh. That makes sense, when you precise it that way.”
“I know.”
Now, if she had the same modesty as Aoi, maybe she would have the guts to tell him about her ever-growing crush on him…

Mitch was running late again, but Katrina didn’t mind. She understood how hectic his business could get - not in great detail, but she understood enough not to fault him. Besides, with him away she had more one-on-one time to spend with Charlie; the boy that was the spitting image of his father and was growing to become a special part in her life. Looking after him was starting to become one of her favorite past times, cooking him meals and watching his cartoons with him brought her happiness that she once didn’t think she could feel. She was no mother material, that fact she still stood by, but she couldn’t deny her blossoming maternal love for the pint sized Mitch James.
She was sitting on the sofa with Charlie, his cartoon coming to a conclusion just as she noticed him falling asleep beside her. Checking the clock, she saw that indeed it was almost bed time for him. Smiling, she stood up from the sofa and turned to lift the six year old into her arms and began to carry him towards the upstairs when the doorbell suddenly rang. She wasn’t sure as to who it could be visiting at this hour, concluding that it wasn’t any of the James family associates, or even the nanny as they would have just walked right in - or at least call to say that they were coming over. With Charlie still in her arms, his head laying on her shoulder and his arms loosely wrapped around her neck, Katrina went to answer the door, only to be greeted by two big and gruff looking men in black suits - and she recognized neither of them.
The door was only a quarter of the way open, just enough for her to see the men all the while staying safe behind the door. “May I help you?” she asked, attempting to keep her suspicion under wraps - there could be a harmless explanation to this…right? The man on the left had a graying beard and cold blue eyes while the one on the right had a large scar on his cheek that made her shuddered as she thought about how he got it. “Is this the residence of Mitchell James?” Mr. Gray replied, the question causing Katrina’s throat to run dry and a thick, suffocating lump form. Her body tensed, but she was yet to be greatly alarmed; she was alert, but not alarmed. “Depends on who is asking,” she answered back, earning a scowl from Mr. Gray.
“Are you Katrina Willows?” Mr. Scar suddenly inquired, his guttural ‘I smoke ten packs of cigarettes a day’ voice startling her. Okay now she was alarmed, suspicion level sky-rocketing from a four to a ten in a matter of milliseconds. How did these two strangers know about her? Mitch had been extra careful in keeping Katrina out of his family’s business and only a select few of his associates were actually aware of her presence in his life, let alone actually knew her. She did not like this situation at all and it only frightened her more when she accidentally noticed the butt end of a gun sticking out of Mr. Scar’s waistband. This was bad, she just knew it.
“I’m sorry, you’ve got the wrong address, have a good night!” Katrina spat frantically as she all but slammed the door in their faces and skillfully locked it with her one hand, the other holding on to Charlie semi-tightly. He was her first priority at the moment, especially after the heavy banging the two men outside had started making on the door. Katrina gasped but quickly composed herself when Charlie began to whimper softly, having been scared out of his sleepy daze. Katrina ran with him in her arms up the stairs and towards his bedroom. Putting him now, she kneeled in front of the boy with her hands gently cupping his face to keep his eyes trained on hers. “Listen to me, Charlie,” she told him, all the while trying to ignore the constant banging that seemed to be growing louder and louder. “You stay in your room, okay? Hide in your closet and don’t come out until I say so, understand?” But Charlie couldn’t answer her verbally, his little voice lost in sobs as tears began pouring down his fear-frozen face - the very sight breaking Katrina’s heart. “Hey, you have to be strong, little man, okay? Be strong like Daddy. I’m going to call him now and he’ll be home soon, but you have to be brave for right now, can you do that baby?” A small nod, followed by stiffening of his upper lip. Katrina gave him a warm smile before pulling him into a tight bear hug and kissing his temple. “I’ll be right back, baby, I promise.” she swore to him, it was a vow she would walk through hellfire in order to keep.
Katrina made sure that Charlie got into his bedroom closet before she shut and barricaded his door. She then raced towards the room she shared with Mitch to search for one of the guns he kept hidden in there; he showed the hiding spot to her once in case of emergencies - well, this was a damn emergency! After finding the pistol and making sure it was loaded, Katrina was about to find a hiding place of her own when she heard another loud bang - this one almost deafening - along with heavy boot steps shuffling through the house. The two men had broken in…Fuck! Her cell phone was inside her purse that she left in the kitchen; the very thought of going down there with two lunatics made her sick to her stomach but goddamn it she needed her phone! She’d have to take the chance, Mitch had to know about this and he needed to drop everything and come home right now.
She was thankful that she never wore shoes or slippers around the mansion, her footsteps were more quieter when she was barefoot. The brunette tip-toed through the house, carefully coming down the stairs with the handgun close to her and her finger resting lightly on the trigger. She’d pause when she heard the boot steps and was ready to take aim should they travel in her direction, but pressed on when they didn’t. The sound of glass shattering and things falling to the ground filled the otherwise silent mansion; what the hell were they doing besides looking for her? Were they here to rob the James family? Or were they here for something worse? Katrina shook those thoughts away and focused on getting to the kitchen, finally making it without being discovered. She quickly grabbed her phone before dashing to the bathroom to hide and make the call.
“Come on, come on, come on!” she whispered frantically as the ringing continued longer than she wanted it to. When it stopped, she was greeted by his beautiful voice and has never felt so happy to hear it. “Mitch! You need to come home now! There’s two guys in the house with guns and they’re trashing the place looking for me - Charlie’s safe and I have a gun but you need to get here a.s.a.p because I don’t know how long they’ll-AHHHH!”
The scream was the last thing she managed to get before the line was forcibly cut off when she dropped the phone seconds after one of the men, Mr. Scar, burst into the bathroom and reached to grab her by the hair. He yanked her hard, causing her to involuntarily drop the gun as she was dragged from the bathroom. She fought desperately, kicking and punching and struggling as hard as she could, but it did little good. Mr. Scar shoved her to the floor and kicked her hard in the stomach when she tried to crawl away. He sat overtop of her and slapped her when she screamed, then punched her when she spat at him. The assault lasted for five minutes but to Katrina it felt like hours; her body broken and bruised, skin stained with her own blood. When the bulking man ceased his attack, he grabbed Katrina by the hair again and forced her to look at him, though her vision was hazy. He got nose to nose with the bloody brunette and hissed viciously, “Big Sal sends his regards.” It was then that Katrina realized what all of this was about: Big Sal aka Salvatore Zarnecki, her fucking former fat piece of shit boss, was finally retaliating against her for quitting and leaving him. That bastard!
She managed to muster enough strength to kick Mr. Scar in the balls then, temporarily stunning him long enough for her to scamper to her feet and dash for the kitchen to grab one of the long and sharp knives, leaving a thick trail of blood behind in the process. Mr. Scar wasn’t too far behind however and caught up to her just as her fingers curled around the utensil drawer. She screamed and kicked some more, fighting him off enough to reach in and grab a knife, before she flipped onto her back and plunged it deep into his chest with an ear-shattering shriek. Mr. Scar gasped, his body going limp as he fell backwards onto the floor, the knife sticking out of his chest with blood beginning to pool around him. Though she was in a great deal of pain, Katrina pushed herself off the ground and swiftly unfastened his gun from his waistband and then went to find the other man - Mr. Gray. And she did find him, trying to break into Charlie’s room. Aiming the gun, Katrina cried out, “GET THE FUCK AWAY FROM MY SON!” before she fired off a round, hitting Mr. Gray in the shoulder. He cried out in pain but managed to scurry away and out of the house before Katrina could shoot him again.
With the chaos coming to an end, the wounded brunette unblocked the six year old’s bedroom door and entered it, softly calling out to him, telling him that it was safe to come out now. When he emerged, the first thing he did was run and jump into her arms; she ignored the agonizing pain that his actions caused her, fighting them off so that she could hug him back. She hushed him softly, whispering words of endearment as she tried to ease his fears and cease his sobs. She picked him up, despite how much it hurt, and laid down with him on his bed, her arms keeping him close to her no matter what, and they both waited for Mitch to come home.
