Revisiting Sesame Street in 2024 - What's it like nowadays?
Tumblr media
Taking a break from the Fayetteville Film festival to review some other shows! Sesame Street is a classic show that many folks need no introduction to. Debuting all the way back in 1969, this adorable children's program starred a variety of lovable Jim Henson Muppet characters who would teach kids about the world around them. The show is broken into many different segments and even different visual styles such as live action muppetry, cartoon animations, and cg animations.
Tumblr media
The show has many fun characters including:
The huge and sweet Big Bird
His best friend Mr. Snuffleupagus (who scared me as a kid but I think he's a sweetheart now)
The treat-loving Cookie Monster
The tiny Elmo with his little heart of gold
Grover, a silly monster who also happens to be a superhero!
the trash-can dwelling Oscar The Grouch (who is actually pretty nice despite his grumpiness)
The Count, a number loving vampire
and adorably dysfunctional couple Bert and Ernie (Fuck whatever's "canon", they're cute together).
Tumblr media
Big Bird gives Snuffy a hug.
Impressively - and thankfully - it is still going strong all these years later, with many episodes being available to watch right on youtube. I certainly don't have time to collect and watch all of a TV show that's been running longer than I've been alive, so I'm glad there was a nice sampling of episodes I could watch for free.
Tumblr media
Grover is a beautiful butterfly!
Being a show aimed at little kids, the humor and content isn't as adult-oriented as in The Muppet Show, so while a lot of the jokes may be a bit too cheesy for grown-ups, it's still a wholesome, sweet show with some really catchy music too (Several of their little songs are stick stuck in my head)! That being said, The one Super Grover segment I watched actually did get a few chuckles out of me, Grover in general is just wonderfully goofy and cute. He has a sort of Peridot or Trixie Lulamoon confidence to him that's incredibly charming. As for the show's educational content, most of it will be simple stuff that most adults already know, but sometimes even I got to see some new things! (for example, I remember learning about how the water flow inside a sink works from an Sesame Street short.).
Tumblr media
This slow-mo shot of Big Bird happily frolicking during the intro is delightful.
Modern technology is shown off in the show quite well, while thankfully not abandoning the charming physical sets and of course the live action Muppet characters themselves. The show's intro has some really nice little slow motion effects that are both whimsical and also feel like someone is having a lot of fun with their fancy camera. 😁 CGI effects feel seamless, aside from this one really weird looking cg animation on a pile of hay in a super Grover short. Interestingly, I found out from The Muppet Wiki that Sesame street has been utilizing digital effects as far back as the 70s!
Tumblr media
Another aspect of the show that is more enjoyable for me as an adult is seeing all of the celebrity cameos that have appeared on the show over the years! Just from the random YouTube episodes I watched, I got to see cameos from Patton Oswalt, Bill Nye, and Whoopi Goldberg! I actually collected a list from various sites of all the celebrities I like who have appeared on the show, and I'm hoping to look up and see if I watch all the clips of them. :) Similarly, the show has done various parodies over the years as well. One of my favorites was their Game of Thrones Parody titled "Respect is Coming". One of their newer parodies is "Jurassic Cookie", where Cookie monster has to figure out how to calm down a giant rampaging dinosaur cookie.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Cameos galore!
I think the last bit I wanted to touch on was the adorable character Mr. Noodle and his surprisingly large family. Mr. Noodle is a character always seen in the Elmo's World segments, and it's unclear as to whether this character just exists in Elmo's imagination or if he actually has a magical world he travels to with his little Elmo powers. Anyway, Mr. Noodle is a friend who lives in a mysterious backrooms like area and he doesn't speak but instead only communicates in gestures and pantomimes. He has a really cool mustache and when you can't see his hair, he even kinda looks like Dr. Robotnik. He's also got multiple family members living with him too, including atleast 3 siblings, and a dog (There's even more siblings on the wiki page!)! The whole Noodle family is adorable and I admire the talent of the actors who can convey so much energy and whimsy without even speaking.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Revisiting the show was a lot of fun, and I'm probably going to go searching for all those celebrity cameo videos after I post this review up. Despite being aimed at kids, it has a heartwarming feel that adults can enjoy too, and with so much ugliness in the world, we can always use more sweet, positive characters like Elmo and Big Bird. <3

If youre a carbohydrate slut like i am. And also lazy and or a fan of prepackaged noodles. Ive got a tip.
First these are the products available where i live
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Feel free to substitute for any pre packaged pasta and instant ramen square that you can get your hands on and enjoy eating.
First choose youre package of side dish noodles i chose pasta roni for this. Add the full amount of liquid plus 1/4 cup water.
Start warming it and follow the instructions on the package. When its time to add the noodles and flavour powder you do it normal and stir it in then immediately add the flavour pack and noodle brick of ramen.
Then just cook until its done and thickened. It turns a side dish that barely fills one (me) person into a side dish that’ll feed three easily. Instead of cooking 2 packages of sidekick/pasta roni which are $1.70-2.50 each depending on sales you stretch it out for a $0.25 pack of ramen.

Delicious.

LFT PART 43
They all sat on the drying deck after escaping Loguetown, except Sanji who got up to make snacks/lunch for everyone. Sanji's cat crawled into his lap making itself comfy kneading at his leg. He felt eyes on him. He looked up to see Usopp's confusion, Luffy was just staring at the cat maybe with hunger? And Nami was cooing at the cat.
“Ummm when did we get a cat?” Usopp asked.
“Zoro got it for Sanji as a courting gift, while an odd gift. I suppose though it would be useful, they are considered to be good luck,” Nami explained. “Luffy he's not to be eaten, Sanji would be very hurt if you ate his pet,” she wanted their captain.
She had a point unfortunately, he was looking at the little black cat as if he would make a nice snack. Zoro stroked the cat's back, it arched under his hand purring.
“Fine, can I touch him?” Luffy asked, reaching out a long arm.
“Sure, if he lets you,” The cat would just do whatever it felt like doing, sometimes they were friendly and other times they were selective about who they would allow to touch them.
The cat reached out with one paw to bat at Luffy's hand. Luffy wiggled his fingers causing him to go after the rubber digits with both paws standing on his back legs as he attacked their captain.
“Awwwwww he's so cute!” Nami cooed.
“Look at him go! So ferocious you get those fingers kitty cat!” Usopp cheered the cat on.
Luffy laughed and continued to wiggle his fingers as the cat made little growls as it batted away until he took a worng step and tumbled out of Zoro's lap. He got up with his back arched, fur standing straight up. He lets out a soft chuckle as the cat begins to hop sideways towards Luffy.
“Jungle cat vs rubber, who will win!?” Usopp began to narrate as the scene began to unfold.
The cat countired to attack luffys hand as luffys hand incited the cat into action. The cat warped its paws around Luffys wirst and kicked its back paws agaist his arm and bit at luffys fingers not drawing blood. Both luffy and sanjis cat were having a great time.
“Lunch time! I made sushi and cocktails! Also Luffy like I promised for not eating Mt fish you made you seared tuna steaks eatch one a different seasoning,” Love cook came over Laden with trays. He eve had one a top his head. “Luffy the top is yours,”
“Yosh!” Luffy stopped playing with the cat a reached for the plate on Sanji's head. He imditly shoved a steak in his mouth. “Oooo it's kinda sour and lemony! I like it!”
“Hey shit-cook, I think you burned one,” Zoro pointed to the next one Luffy was swolling whole.
“I most certainly did not, it's call blackened it's a type of seasoning,” He responded handing Nami an orange looking cocktail with a sparkly looking peel. “For you my dear it's a screwdrive granshised with a candy minka peel,”
“Ooo,” Nami took a sip. “Mmm delish thank you sanji,”
“You welcome Nani swan,” Zoro watched as he passed out the other cocktails. “Usopp this is a Pina colda, luffy a blue lagoon. And for the moss a sake bomb,” Sanji handed him a glass of beer with chopsticks and a sho glass of sake on top. Zoro pulled the chopsticks away and the sake shot feel into the beer. “Eat up!” Sanji placed the large platter of sushi on the ground int he middle of everyone takeikg a small plate of just raw fish. “Mr. Noodles here kitty,” Zoro snorted into his drink luckily not spilling a thing. The cat now dubed Mr. Noddles imidlty ran to sanji and the fish.
“Mr. Noddles?” Nami questioned while Luffy laughed his ass off. “What kinda name is that?”
“What's wrong with the name? I think it's cute, and its to late to change it I've made up my mind,”
“But why food?”
“I'm more worried about if the cat, Mr. Noddles is even gonna be safe!” Usopp worried.
“why wouldn't it be?” Zoro asked. “the lady said it was a good gift for a ships cook,”
“Zeff had one, her name was Clementine. She even went to the grand line with them; she only recently died of old age. She was almost thirteen years old, she lasted longer than Zeffs crew who all drowned in a strom,”
“Yah Usopp the cat will be fine,” Zoro used his chopsticks to take some sushi before Luffy ate it all.
“Mr. Noodles is our new member!! We need to have a party!” Luffy declared before shoveling sushi in his mouth.

DIRK: So there’s only one channel in this motel.
DIRK: And this morning, while I was getting ready, I was watching Sesame Street.
DIRK: They were doing this bit where some clown was trying to wash his hands but kept washing his feet or his elbows and Elmo would go, "No, Mr. Noodle! Your HANDS!" and all the TV kids would laugh.
DIRK: About the fourth or fifth time of this, I heard a guy yell from somewhere else in the motel:
CALIBORN: GOD DAMMIT MR. NOODLE.

Just got back a bit ago from seeing Bill Irwin's "On Beckett," a one-man show that alternates readings of Samuel Beckett's work with Irwin's personal interpretations of it.
This sounds like the most pretentious nonsense ever, but those of a Certain Age might know Bill Irwin better as the OG Mr. Noodle from the Elmo's World segments on Sesame Street (I am not Of That Certain Age, but had younger siblings who very much were). He's a trained, professional clown, as well as an acclaimed actor who's played multiple roles on Broadway and Off-Broadway productions of "Waiting for Godot" to critical acclaim, and a lot of his analysis had to do with drawing on the historical vaudeville tradition and silent film clown tradition (i.e. Chaplin, Keaton, et al) that Beckett grew up with, and talking about that influence on how he interpreted performing Beckett's works.
The physicality of his performance, the very pointed usage of hats and how they can convey character based on how they're worn, and his passion for the topic plus his responsiveness to the audience really made it a gem of a performance which I'd never have seen had it not been for my Guthrie Theater season subscription, and I'm glad to have spent my evening this way.
