Mermay 2023: Marine Biology Inspired Merwhales
Another year, another Mermay! And that means continuing my series of Marine Biology inspired merfolk for Beast Fables! This week's theme was "Biggest of the Big", aka Merwhales!
In the world of Urvara (where Beast Fables takes place in), they're a revered group, since most Merwhales don't have permanent homes and tend to travel around the world. Their calls can be heard for miles/kilometers around, with the loudest even going from end of the earth to the other.
This great global reach means that Whalespeak, the language of Merwhales, is the single most common language among Merfolkdom, something that can connect everyone from the chilliest of the poles to the deepest abyss.
And now, for the merfolk themselves:
Harald the Hammer: A Sperm Whale, and the local guardian of Kara's town.
Alva the Blind Wanderer: A Bowhead Whale, and world-travelling elder, who offers wisdom to those that need it.
Julia the Songweaver: A Humpback Whale, who sings songs of whatever gets her fancy.
Toby "Tobias" the Stongemason: A Right Whale, and a man that builds houses. He'll offfer ya a good deal if you let him talk all about his (often inane) stories about the joys of stoneworking.
Balian the Wordsmith: A Basilosaurus and the man that wrote the Syllabary for Merwhale language, and thus a founder some of the biggest parts of Merfolk culture.
The Blue Whale Twins, Ataahua and Aata: Twins who have very different jobs in life. One is a student of Alva and a healer, and SO utterly selfless, she may even help shipwrecked landlubbers (tales of a giant blue woman-whale are deemed crazy by werebeasts). Said landlubbers were probably shipwrecked in the first place by her brother Aata, who punches holes in 'em. Gotta do his part to keep Merfolk society a secret after all!
As you've probably seen, most Merwhales don't refer to their surnames often. It is their deeds that tend to inform of their identity, regardless of blood.

Another new character, meet Kingsley the Merwhal!
The cutest prince of the cove, at least that's what he calls himself.
Kingsley is a peppy fellow that has a serious attitude problem, thinks the whole world should fawn over him and treat him like royalty, and will pitch a fit if he's not given "enough" attention from the other merfolk.
He's sorta rich compared to the others, which doesn't help with his bratty and egotistical attitude at all.
despite his cute look, he's not afraid to use his tusk to defend himself if he's in a sticky situation, he will jab you with that and it WILL hurt.
[sidenote, yea I know the tusk is where the nose is but I just wanted to play into the "narwhals are sea unicorns" thing media does.]

Beauty and the Beast
An alternate universe where the ancestors of the Sky kingdom was spared from the effects of the Eden shards by the mercy of megabird, and transformed into half-creatures of the land.
When the ancestors lived on as centauroid creatures, they divided upon themselves as dark-taurs (consisting of krilltaurs, crabtaurs, merleviathans etc.) and light-taurs (mantataurs, mermanatees, merwhales, merturtles, merjellies and birdtaurs). Although the two did not see each other eye to eye, they nonetheless lived under one society.
Krilltaurs, crabtaurs, merturtles and merwhales tend to be chosen as guardians or guards. With shells as extra protection, they were excellent at warding off dark dragons and would-be trouble makers.
Deltos, a krilltaur, served as a guard of a humble little town situated in the Daylight Prairie. He met Soleil during patrol when the guard team he was in stumbled on her family's ranch near Prairie peaks. With Soleil sheltered from civilization, she was unprejudiced against dark-taurs, to which Deltos was charmed by.

Soleil is a SkyCOTL OC belonging to "Vanya" :D
This is an "Alternate universe" setting, as Deltos is one of my guard OCs who is the head guard of a travelling caravan.
But the thought of a centaur AU for SkyCOTL tickled my mind~

(Sorry if this sound macabre) do you think mer whalefalls exist?
Yesssss, in the technical sense? In my worldbuilding Merwhales do exist but they live in the ocean open with normal whales. So yeah when a Merwhale dies their family pays their respect and will let them fall to keep the ecosystem alive. They'll keep trinkets and keepsakes to remember them by
Slightly related but Its also so so so so taboo to eat other merfolk. That's instant exile or death.

I figure it's hard to get a massage when you're a giant merwhale, but I suspect Rex has enough determined siblings that would stubbornly team up to try to give him a back rub to help with all of that crackle snap popping. No harm in trying!
Definitely! They try with everything to at least help with the pain of being a gigantic mer who is constantly hated on by gravity. Rex has the most sore back anybody has had.
Now imagine like, a bunch of mers trying with all their will to give Rex a back massage with their little hands because Rex is too numb to even move- it's a whole spectacle

Hello, I would like to ask a few questions on Beast Fables:
1) What do merfolk dwellings look like? How similar are they to the homes of the landfolk? Would you be able to draw Otodon's family home if you get a chance?
2) Besides the Ten-Faced God of the shifters and the Goddess of the merfolk, what other religions are there in this world? Is there anything like the pagan beliefs of the past, Islam or Zoroastrianism?
3) Cara is so much smaller than her mother, not only because she's still growing up, but because she's a half-breed, the daughter of a merfolk tiger shark?
4) Are you planning on releasing a full comic book on this setting?

Merfolk Dwellings depend really on the Merfolk community. It could be simple huts made of rock bricks or literally carved from a single boulder with the help of a Merwhale, or dug into a continental slope, where there is either only one entrance or several.
*Cracks Knuckles* Oh yes! There is the God of Light and Dark, where God is both Creator AND Destroyer, and the animistic beliefs of many a culture worldwide. Urvara parallels a lot with our world, so expect diversity in religion.
It's less Kara is small, and that her mom is huge. Carol is basically a very muscular individual of an already muscular group of Merfolk.
Hopefully! We'll have to see where the future brings.

omg wait a pirate/mermaid au with team excalibur. julian is the noble heir to his family’s fleet. he already owns his own ship and is in the process of building his own crew. Wales and sophie are two merwhales who julian met as kids and have a secret relationship with. the only one who knows abt it is klaus (julian’s first mate). ziggurat is a giant squid who blackmails julian so he can get access to the land kingdoms and. idk conquer them or something lol

twwh beta summary + rambles under cut!!
Caleb enters the Boiling Isles and meets Evelyn. He runs toward Old Bonesborough and Evelyn pursues after a short time. He exposition-dumps slightly in his journal then runs off. Evelyn tries to find him in Bonesborough but fails, and returns to the Clawthorne Manor. Evelyn saves Caleb from a (currently) undecided creature a week later, near Old Latissa. He owes her a debt now, so she asks him to help her fight a Merwhal for it's scales south of the titan’s right hand. Caleb reluctantly agrees (never anger a witch!). Evelyn and Caleb fly out to Merwhal territory and face off against the mother Merwhal. Turns out the rumors were incorrect and Merwhals are actually peaceful creatures! The mother Merwhal lost her most recent baby though, and needs Evelyn and Caleb to retrieve it, in exchange for some scales. The baby is trapped in a fisherman's trap far off the coast. With Caleb’s knife, they’re able to cut through the lines and free the baby. They lead it back to the mother and are given the scales. They fly back to the Clawthorne Manor. Evelyn’s potion is seen inside, almost finished. She reopens the portal and tells Caleb to go back home, where he belongs. He mentions that he is interested in the Isles and is unsure if he wants to go home or not. Evelyn offers to take him back from time to time. He agrees and walks through the portal home. While this is happening, Philip finds a pool of water in the human realm that reflects the Boiling Isles. After “careful” consideration, he dives through. The camera zooms out to show that he’s at the heart of the Titan. Roll Credits!
This would be the first "episode" to twwh. The amount of episodes in this is still undecided, but my goal is just about 1 seasons worth of canon-influenced theories and plotlines that make up the story from the moment Caleb enters the demon realm to either a. When Caleb dies + epilogue with Evelyn's future plans or b. To when ToH starts. The latter would take a lot more time an effort however, so it may be extended to a second "season", where S1 ends with Caleb's death and S2 starts with Evelyn's reaction and transitions to Philip's plans and actions up until Eda finding the portal/Luz entering the BI.
Slightly unrelated, but this does establish concepts that are used later on!! The most notable being A. A curse breaking potion (not written here, found on a separate portion of The Doc. This will be used with Philip's curse, but it's not effective since the curse (so far) stems from the grief of palismen itself, not a spell), B. The knife Caleb uses when Philip attacks him wayy later on, and C. This shows the early stages of Caleb going to the pipeline of hate all witches→live and let live→evelyn is ok... I guess→evelyn and her witch/demon friends are awesome→all witches and demons are fine, I horribly misjudged this place
