ive started putting together a master list spreadsheet for all of the stuff I've been through in the past and already want to rec. It's kinda slow going because I've been in the car for the past three days, but once I have that workable I'll post it here.
In the meantime: I've finished teppu! Definitely really good. I'm still not really into sports narratives structurally but the character stuff they did was really enjoyable. I feel like it wasn't to most cleanly executed narrative and maybe could have given itself a little bit more space to work, but taking its length into account it used it's time really well
Since I'm on the road I wanted something kinda brainless and easy to get through for reading in the evenings I started surviving romance last night (note: I have no idea if the content of surviving romance is brainless and easy to get through but webtoon as a format is fundamentally designed for this. So.) But I got immediately distracted because a new flower that bloomed nowhere chapter dropped the second I opened it and I had to do that instead
We're at cracker barrel right now so I'm reading some more of it and all these webtoon comments are talking about how much they like the art. But aside from slightly more appealing color use I really don't see anything here as being visually interesting at all and barely different from any other webtoon style. Sorry I'm a webtoon hater and it'll really take a lot to change that. Visually boring is probably the worst crime a comic can commit and I feel like vertical scroll format simply does not lend itself well to interesting compositions
Anyway I'm gonna give it the first 7 chapters to see if I consider it being worth reading the rest since that's what's free on webtoon meaning that's what they've calculated as being their best onboarding for this.
Tumblr media
They don't have butter knives at this cracker barrel they only gave us forks when we sat down and when we asked the waitress for a knife to butter our biscuits she said they didn't have any and brought us plastic takeaway cutlery instead. Which is fine for butter. But really raises some questions

Media Log 2024 Entry 3 - De Blob - 4/5
Tumblr media
I remember very few things about this game from when I was a kid. the overtly anti-imperialist message was not one of them.
To preface this, I will tell a little story about myself: De Blob, the original game on the Wii, was a game I had and loved as a kid. Though, I had a strange relationship with it: I never played past the first level even once. Every time I booted up the game, all I did was play the first level. If I'm remembering correctly, it was because I was afraid of the enemies that appeared for the first time in the second level. My, how I've grown!
Anyway, this game is pretty damn good! To start with the positives, the gameplay loop of painting buildings and doing missions in ambitiously large levels is very enjoyable (and it ties into a scoring system so I'm obligated to like it at least a little bit). This gameplay loop is made much more enjoyable by what I consider the game's highlight feature: the entire in-game OST is adaptive! As you paint the levels, the music goes from a very simple percussion line to a full-track alongside other changes like the sky going from gray to blue and the ground getting more colorful. On top of that, it's just a really good OST all around, which is always a plus.
The game also oozes (like paint. Haha.) charm and style, which becomes readily apparent as you paint buildings from blank grays to vivid colors and patterns. The entire game is about revolution against an oppressive government and its graffiti-inspired style works well to sell that! The character designs are also very charming and use shape language well to convey their vibes.
Speaking of the revolution against an oppressive government - the weird thing about this game is that it's very overtly leftist. It's not like it's winning awards for discussing theory like Disco Elysium, but it goes farther than I'd expect a Wii game published by THQ to go. Besides this, the story isn't anything to write home about, but it's funny when it wants to be and weirdly fucked up when it wants to be. Ink is rarefied liquid misery, by the way.
Anyway, onto the negatives - mostly, the controls. While the movement feels good in open spaces, precision platforming is a major struggling point. The slippery controls make moving across smaller platforms or making tight jumps a chore, and wall jumps are even worse - you either stick to every wall you brush against or you don't stick to walls at all.
The other negative is the enemy design - honestly, mostly just the Elite Inkies. Having to go out of your way to find the right color to deal with them is a fine gimmick... until the game starts really overusing them. Then it gets really annoying really fast. The combat in general is fairly weak, really - I feel like combat doesn't suit the gameplay the best, and that focusing more on hazards would have been the best, as satisfying as slamming Inkies into little black stains is.
Overall, De Blob is a very charming and unique game (with a great port to PC from the Wii!) held back by some major flaws, but nothing so bad as to sour the experience. I'd recommend giving it a shot if you get the chance!
Also, like the Portal series, it's apparently a game that started out as a school project. Funny how that keeps happening.

media log part ??/???
chungking express: i'm too sappy to talk about movies about love. a woman repeatedly breaks into a guy's apartment, throws out his stuff, cleans up after him, and 1) he doesn't notice 2) THEY GET TOGETHER AFTER HE FINDS OUT ABOUT IT. it's GREAT
alice in hell (in progress): really fantastic scratchy penwork. trashy edgelord dystopia comic. i don't feel the impulse to binge it and it hasn't really grabbed me yet; i do keep going back to it because edgelord trash is good for my diet in some way
apothecary diaries s2: not nearly as good as season 1 unfortunately
dune part 2: WAY BETTER THAN PART 1 GRATEFULLY
vision of escaflowne (paused): i sat down to watch episode 1 of this bc i didn't feel like continuing frieren at the moment and immediately realized i needed to finish everything else i was watching and give this my undivided attention for like. a full week of my life at least. fuck me dude the drawings in this thing

Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014)
The Batman (2022)
iCarly (2007)
Glee (2009)
Every Harry Potter Movie (2001 - 2011)
Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001)
🖋Not so serious thoughts🖋
Stranger Things: It’s been a comfort show for years. I’m only so strong against a friend group in the 1980s.
The Mandalorian: My mental health is held in Grogu’s tiny, tiny hands. Also Dinluke is real trust me I was there.
Spree: I will say, I was a little disappointed because everyone said I would love it and I didn’t. It is very realistic of influenfers though and I liked the concept a lot. Joe is also creepily good at being an incel creepo.
Sixteen Candles: It’s the summer of the 80s what can I say.
American Psycho: My dad has read the book and seen it before, so he explained the ending to me. I like the idea of it being about the toxic materialistic environment they’re in and everyone only cares about themselves and doesn’t know/care about who anyone really is and him just completely losing his shit, and still, no one really cares.
Newsies: *aggressively sings Seize the Day and backflips off my couch wearing suspenders*
Game of Thrones: You cannot convince me I’m not a Targaryen
Dolores Claiborne: She girlboss girl slayed I fear
Rocky III: I’ve never seen any of these movies all the way through lol but my dad loves them
Captain America: The Winter Soldier: My number one emotional support movie Steve is my fave avenger I’ve been emotionally attached to this movie since the day it came out and I was 12.
The Batman: Battinson has my heart and soul. He’s a depressed wet cat but he’s my depressed wet cat.
iCarly: A childhood classic. Spencer is an icon he is the moment.
Glee: And that’s how Sue C’s it.
Harry Potter: Listen we don’t like JK Rowling but I can’t help with these movies I’ve been watching them my whole life.
Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring: You literally cannot convince me I’m not an elf who married Aragorn and lived a happily ever after.
Pretty Little Liars: My roommates were literally disgusted when they found out I never watched this. In the simplest of words, this show is batshit.

media log 02/28: AI: THE SOMNIUM FILES - nirvanA Initiative
[SPOILER WARNING]
the first somnium files game excels mostly in spite of its gameplay, rather than because of it. the second somnium files game has no such issue - somniums in this one are MUCH cleaner and more compelling, and the rest of the game doesn’t lose any of its signature charm in the process
as for the actual writing, while there are a couple of things i could nitpick (for instance, plot threads such as gen’s rivalry with ota and the entire detective character getting dropped halfway through the game), i’m overall a huge fan. the game’s big twist is incredibly well done, and it’s such a delight to run back through events in my head and try to sort out the actual chronological order of things and the implications of previously unremarkable character interactions
in conclusion, i would die for corina boettger. also, lonely girls across the world let’s wake up and fight

i finished signalis, finally, after months!
Tumblr media
and by 'finished signalis' i mean i watched a playthrough of the last hour of the game because i was getting kind of frustrated and figured it'd be more or less equivalent at this point. definitely the correct choice because looking at that final boss i would have gotten my ass completely kicked.
great game, really beautiful, fantastic atmosphere, had a ton of fun* with it. will try and make a more robust rec post for it later.
*relative to my discovery that survival horror gameplay does Not seem to be for me

Media Log 2023 Entry 21 - Eight Crazy Nights - 4/10
Tumblr media
That's a technical foul.
Art provided by my friend Gram!
The only reason I watched this movie was because my girlfriend is Jewish and she has a tradition of watching it every Hanukkah.
Genuinely, what is wrong with this movie? Somehow it rapidly flip-flops between genuinely funny, desperately clawing at jokes, and trying to be a genuine and heart-warming Christmas/Hanukkah movie? Why is it a musical? Why is one of the music numbers performed by a bunch of brands?! WHY IS THERE A SCENE OF A BUNCH OF DEER EATING AND ENJOYING EATING SHIT AND ANOTHER SCENE OF THOSE SAME DEER SHITTING THEMSELVES?!
There are roughly 5 good jokes in this movie. Maybe more, I didn't keep count. I would have never watched this movie without my girlfriend making me do it. I still regret letting her make me!

media log of recent stuff:
GTO (manga): GREAT. grade a silly shit. precisely what i want in a shounen series, some of the best expression work in the game, definitely dated by this point but isn't that part of the charm?
TANGK (album): some really high highs on here, i've been a fan of IDLES for a while and GIFT HORSE may be one of my favorite music videos to come out in the last few years (tho, visuals carry that one). good rock. POP POP POP gets the favorite track nod
Girl Meets Rock (manga): OOORUUGUGHRHUGH YURI. FOR ME. i am not immune to being able to recognize namedrops and i am immediately endeared by the protag's bandmate being a huge freak about her. i don't understand what shounen jump's editorial staff bases their keep/cut decisions on anymore so i can only pray for the lifespan of this one
TENET (movie) (second viewing): truly the most fujobait entry into nolan's oeuvre. on this basis alone i regard it highly (also, seeing it on 70mm was a real treat; the cinematography is great on any presentation and the film treatment adds a warmth that worked really well for me), it helps that on a second viewing there's more to chew into thematically. there's stuff being said here about faith as an active force and unfortunately i do have to watch it a third time for my personal analysis to fully cohere. oh noooo
Frieren (anime): everyone and their mom knows this show is good there is nothing further i can say on this subject
Bucchigiri (anime): this show is exactly what it wants to be. i love it. whether it's good or not is the least relevant question i can imagine
2666 (novel): look it's 900 pages long i'll tell you if it's good or not when i'm done it's taking a minute

Jason Todd’s death storyline was perfectly executed because they killed him figuratively (killed his innocence) before actually killing him. It’s a tragedy because he died in two separate ways. And the reason his resurrection is just as much a tragedy is because only one of the things killed can be brought back and it wasn’t the thing that made Jason who he is (his innocence and kindness).

to summarize an unduly rambly post: our control over kris has been steadily growing more and more distressing for them throughout the story. the snowgrave route, possibly the most gut wrenching, violating imposition of our will on theirs AND Noelle's (*homer voice* so far!), explicitly, thematically, and visually represents possession and coercion through romantic imagery, specifically rings and weddings. it's nauseating. it forces both of them into an implied relationship that neither of them is comfortable in by leveraging noelle's desperate wish to reconnect with her childhood friend. it has exactly the horrible connotations you don't want it to have.
ralsei being presented as both a direct callback to asriel—both the undertale asriel we know, and y'know... kris' brother in deltarune—while also setting him and kris up in a clearly romantic context that kris does not seem to either share or be comfortable with, is not a coincidence. it's not an accident. "isn't that a little incestuous" that's the point! kris' agency being stripped away is one of deltarune's main thematic cores: the game is repeatedly setting up a pattern where that theme is reinforced by putting kris in upsetting, unwanted romantic relationships for OUR entertainment. nothing fits the bill better than pairing them with the nostalgia bait companion that literally looks like their brother.
