a pilot post for giratina & volo askblog! the question is about their first meeting
lyrics from COMFORT ZONE by Ferry
the eye thing was inspired by Odin mythology where he sacrificed his eye to drink from the well of wisdom. here it's more of a symbol of treaty between volo and giratina, like selling one's soul to devil but with a slight advantage for the latter: giratina is now able to watch over the world through volo and volo is able to play edgy music
the whole summoning scene is a mishmash of things i felt would be fun, like the upside down arceus' sigil and how volo assembles it out of glass pieces

a flight risk with a fear of falling
Tumblr media
pairing: commander Wolffe / fem reader
Word count: two.4K
Tags/warnings: mostly fluff and hurt/comfort, but suggestive at times. Sketchy fair rides, fear of falling summary: you and Wolffe attend a local fair. You have a great time, all goes well, until you’re stuck at the top of the Ferris wheel and are pretty convinced that you’re about to fall and die. Notes: reader is implied to be visually impaired here. However, of course, that does not mean you won’t enjoy if you’re not. This was just based off of a real life experience I had, and I couldn’t imagine writing it and the fear I felt without blindness being incorporated into it. Title is based off of the lyrics of mine by Taylor Swift.
You aren’t afraid of heights.
And really, you think, it would be silly for you to be, considering how little vision you have to look down at the world as it whizzes beneath you as you fly by.
You and Wolffe had eagerly scrambled to get on the roller coasters with the highest peaks with barely a second thought, been on the drop zone more than once in a row, and the whole time, you had only been screaming with delight and adrenaline fuelled anticipation, your commander only rolling his eyes fondly, unable to conceal the upward curve of his lips or the crinkle of amusement between his eyes as they gleam, bearing witness to your unbridled display of excitement with quiet satisfaction.
“As much as I love watching you becoming a little speed demon, meshla,” he says lowly, tucking you beneath his arm as you stumble, slightly woozy and breathless after your most recent ride, “maybe we should take a break from these.”
He indicates the line of brightly coloured roller coasters that stretch in front of you, loud Carnival Style music blaring from many of them, accompanied by the ambiance of constant shrieks as they speed above.
“Are you saying you wouldn’t love me if I threw up all over your new boots?” You ask with a pout, letting your head drop against his chest with a sigh.
“That’s not what I said,” he chides, gently tucking a stray piece of hair behind your ear. “But do you really want to share a speeder with me on the way home if I smell like that?” he gives you a slight poke, and you wrinkle your nose with a shake of your head.
“Fiine,” you say with a dramatic roll of your eyes. “Boost told me that a wolf plushy is up as a prize at one of the games. We should try and win it, to show some pride for the Wolfpack, you know?.”
His lips pull into a slight smirk as he gazes down at you. “Aren’t you actually suggesting that I should waste our precious tokens on a game that is probably a scam to try and win it for you?” he huffs, folding his arms across his chest as he gives you a playful scowl with a raised eyebrow. “Because no offense, but I don’t think your skill set lies in aiming rings at bottles, meshla,” he remarks, brushing a slight kiss against the tip of your nose.
Your pout transforms into a full on grin. “Yes, that’s exactly what I meant,” you confirm, completely unashamedly, with an enthusiastic nod. “You win the game, and I’ll be your personal cheerleader.”
“Hm,” Wolffe tilts his head, considering. “That would be more tempting if you were wearing the outfit,” he says, voice dropping, fingers lazily trailing down your side, idly making their path to your waist.
Your breath catches and you smack his arm playfully. “I don’t have a cheerleader outfit,” you announce, with a toss of your hair, placing a hand on your hip
You raise yourself up onto your tiptoes, leaning in and letting your own voice drop suggestively with a teasing smirk. “But, if you win the game, I’ll make sure that the night ends with my outfit scattered on the floor.”
There’s a moment of dead silence, tension crackling in the air as Wolffe’s eyes rake over your form, both hands reaching out to settle against your hips.
Then, he unexpectedly hoists you up into his arms, causing you to squeak with surprise, steadying your self by grasping at his shoulders as your eyes dance.
“Teasing little thing,” he hums, breath inches away from your ear as he speaks, making you shiver. “I’ll do it, then. But you better be prepared for us to lose all of our tokens on this, sweetheart.”
*
When he does actually manage to win, you’re pleasantly surprised.
Not because you had any doubt in him, of course. But because you genuinely believed that all of the fair games were scams. Wolffe is ceaseless in his determination, though, as evidenced by the very limited amount of tokens you have left. He lines up each shot with as much precision as you imagine he does on the battlefield, his natural confidence in his abilities riling up the games supervisors, as with their increasing befuddlement, they try to make it harder for him, especially, in the end, when his confidence is proven to be not unfounded in the slightest.
“Here you are, ner cyar,” he says, easy smile on his lips as he passes you the very large, gray wolf stuffed animal.
“Thank you,” you say excitedly, wrapping your arms around the plushy and jumping up to give Wolffe a chaste kiss.
Your lips pull into a smirk, holding up the stuffed animal with pride. “Looks like I’ve got a new favourite cuddle buddy, Wolffe,” you tease. “You were great, but, I think I just found your replacement,” you chuckle, and are abruptly cut off when swiftly, Wolffe reaches out, effortlessly plucking the wolf from your arms and holding him high above your head.
“Don’t even joke about that, meshla,” he warns, tauntingly dangling him just out of your reach as you desperately try to grab for him. “Uh uh,” he tsks, look of mock disapproval settling over his features as he holds the plushy above your head by his ear. “You take that back first, and I’ll give him back to you.”
You scoff, rolling your eyes. “Lucky for you, the stuffed wolf won’t be able to replace you as the big spoon. So please, can I have him back?”
“Good,” he says, smug smile on his face. Gently, he drops the stuffed animal, taking care to make sure that he lands in your arms without incident.
“We still have a few tokens,” you report, counting over the admittedly meagre supply. “We should go on the ferris wheel.”
“I hope you’re not trying to put off us going home so that I don’t get as much time to partake in the other part of the winnings you promised me,” he quips, tilting his head quizzically.
“Of course not,” you defend, holding up the last ride tokens. “I just don’t want these to go to waste. Besides, I’ve never been on one before.”
Wolffe gives you a grin, suddenly mischievous, pulling your arm through his and bending his elbow almost out of habit, so that he can guide you.
“I haven’t either,” he admits, beginning to walk. “Let’s fix that for both of us.”
*
You are not afraid of heights.
This, you are now reminding yourself, quite  sternly as the ferris wheel lifts you higher and higher by degree.
And maybe, you rationalize, that is still true. Because though watching the world blurring out of focus below you with your already limited vision is, unsettling, to say the least. It’s really the Ferris wheel itself, with one support bar around your waist being the only thing that stops you from plummeting face first Back down to the Earth below.
Being blind can alter or throw off your sense of balance and centre of gravity, and although this isn’t something you’re reminded of often, this is one of the times where it hits you full on, how unsteady you are, how close to teetering and falling all the way down you feel, even if, logically, you know the odds of that happening are small. You can’t convince your brain of that, so you freeze up completely, thinking that if you don’t move, that if you don’t even breathe, it’ll make it easier.
It doesn’t.
“What’s wrong?”
Wolffe is watching you, eyes intent, observant. At first, you’re not entirely sure as to what has tipped him off to your impending sense of doom. But then, looking down, finding that your hand has locked itself around his with an iron grip, you suppose it’s quite obvious. What’s more, your other arm is tightly wrapped around the stuffed wolf he won for you at the ring toss, your face hiding against its soft fur, eyes squeezed shut.
At your lack of response, he shifts, wanting to get a better look at you. Unfortunately, though, this causes the cart you’re into jostle, and even though the movement is slight and fleeting, you still let out a noise of distress, eyes going wide.
“Are you, scared of heights?” He asks, voice slightly incredulous and tentative.
You shake your head vehemently in denial. “No, no, it’s not that. It’s, I.”
You’re cut off as the wheel begins to move again, pulling you closer to the top before stopping. Somewhere, in the back of your mind, you think that the sun must be about to set, and it must be a nice view, for those who can appreciate it. For those who don’t feel like they’re about to die right now.
“It’s not how high we are, Wolffe,” you try to explain, hating the way that your voice comes out in more of a whimper as you stare down at the ground. “It’s just I just feel like I’m going to fall. It it would be so easy,” you point with a shaking hand at the support bar, distrustful. “And what if something goes wrong and I...” you trail off, eyes blurring with unshed tears, to your utter mortification.
“It it’s not like the roller coasters, Wolffe,” you try to explain, clutching at the stuffed animal in your lap with anxiety. “On those, I didn’t have time to think about falling.”
All sense of logic and rationality has fled your mind like birds, leaving you feeling unstable, each heartbeat that pounds within the cage of your chest convincing you further that the slightest breeze is going to push you off, send you falling down off this precarious ride and to your certain demise.
A single tear tracks its way down your cheek and carefully, Wolffe raises a hand to gently wipe it away. “Oh, ner cyar,” he breathes, movements slow and deliberate as he reaches out towards you, keeping it cautious, predictable, so that you know exactly what he’s doing. “C’mere,” he coos at you softly, arm reaching around you to easily pull you to him.
His other hand delicately smooths over your hair, before settling to cradle the back of your head, securely tucking you against his chest.
Miraculously, the feeling of his body, protective as it curls around you, Creating a safe cocoon for you to nestle in, Immediately begins to ease the all consuming fear inside your bones. Somehow, you feel less unsteady, isolated, and on the verge of falling as soon as he’s safely tucked you in his arms.
“Do you think I’m gonna let you fall, ad’ika?” He asks, voice a low rumble as he looks down at you, the stuffed animal comfortably wedged between the both of you.
The feeling of his strong arms holding you securely against his broad chest, the way his heart is beating steadily against your ear, is much more reassuring than the seemingly flimsy support bar, and your intrusive thoughts. In spite of yourself, you find your muscles beginning to unwind, melting into him as one of his hands, large and warm, caresses over your back, pressing firm, grounding circles in between your shoulder blades.
“N no,” you say, unable to conceal the slight tremor that runs through you as the ferris wheel moves again. “B but what if.”
“Shh, meshla, focus,” he gently Chides, redirecting you’re over thinking mind back to him, giving one of your shoulders a slight squeeze of encouragement. “I want you to close your eyes, and breathe, and all you have to do is focus on me, alright? Nothing else, just you and me, right here,” he continues, voice a calm, steady stream.
You give him a small, shaky nod, before turning your face against his chest, relieved when you can no longer see the world growing smaller when you’re tucked against him like this. Slowly, hesitantly, you let your eyes close, and you’re surprised and relieved to find that the impending sense of dread is beginning to fade.
You’re rewarded with Wolffe lowering, a slight dip of his chin, peppering several kisses to the top of your head as he holds you tightly. “Good girl,” he praises, voice a quiet breath against your ear.
The ferris wheel begins to move again and before you’re given time to think about it, he speaks, derailing the panicked thoughts that begin to stir.
“Your hair is so pretty,” he remarks, slowly running his fingers through the strands. “And so soft,” he murmurs, dropping another kiss to your head. “How do you get it to be like that?”
Somehow, your lips pull into a small smile. “With a lot of work,” you mumble with a slight laugh and shrug.
“And?” He prods, lightly poking you in the side. “I want details, meshla. Give me your full routine, with the products you use. Give me a step-by-step guide.”
You know that he probably doesn’t actually care. You know he’s making you talk to distract you from the movements of the ferris wheel around you. In spite of that, though, you give in, beginning to speak and explain exactly how you maintain your hair.
To his credit, he seems to be listening attentively to everything you’re saying, eyes never leaving you as you speak, always prompting you with questions when you seem to not know what else to say.
Before you know it, the wheel has brought your cart to the ground, and an attendant is releasing the support bar from around the both of you, allowing you to get down.
Wolffe clambers out first, getting down to offer you a hand, helping you down off the attraction. Taking one look at the expression on your face, he wordlessly holds out his elbow, beginning to guide you both towards the fairgrounds exit.
“Are you that eager to get us home so that you can claim your winnings?” You ask teasingly as he pulls you behind him with long, purposeful strides.
He stops, turns to face you and catches your chin in his hand, tilting your face up to look at him as he idly runs a calloused thumb over your bottom lip, causing goosebumps to rise on your upper arms.
“Hm,” he says, expression contemplative as his other hand grazes down your side, experimentally dipping beneath the material of your top to trace teasing circles against your hip.
“Truth be told, meshla,” he muses, the low baritone of his voice slightly husky with desire. “I think you’re the one who deserves rewarding tonight.”
Your face breaks into a smile, even as you arch against his touch, with your breath catching in your throat.
“Well,” you start to say, finding you have to swallow several times as a blush creeps into your cheeks before you can respond properly.
“I certainly won

whats your favorite ferry song. i like pafl as a whole but especially message lost :-)
Ough man its hard to pick!!
Out of PAFL it's a tie between strike 3 comfort zone and message lost. Strike 3's high drive and strong lyrics, comfort zone's expert utilization of noise and narrative solidity, and message lost's perfectly unsettling simplicity and gorgeous lyrics are so <3 i also really like how ferry doesnt 'gender lock' the loids (ie male loids for male pov songs) because it really allows for flexible utilization of what fits the song best
Outside of PAFL i think my favorite is She Could Be Satan for All I Know for sheer lyrical prowess (id love to see a remaster with stronger backing though), but i love Hack Writer and the excellent latin pronunciation (they even properly elide the syllables!!!!!!!) as well as dopamine machine
Fukase's tuning in Samara 1921 is beautiful. It sounds so mournful. Really lets the vb shine
I think ferry's early songs suffer from not a bad melody, but sort of a shallow sound in the backing. Punch it Punk does the chiptuney sound much better, they've really improved a lot

Oriol Jean Baptiste has unveiled a new release: GOD’s LOVE
April 2023 - Making music that feels original and intuitive is not as easy as it might seem. Many artists tend to fall into a comfort zone and as a result, they aren’t fulfilling their full potential. Thankfully, this is not the case of Oriol Jean Baptiste, a talented artist who sets the bar higher in terms of combining a huge variety of styles, while retaining a lot of personality and vibe.
GOD’s LOVE, the artist’s most recent studio work, stands out as a truly spot-on introduction to what Oriol Jean Baptiste is all about. This release is highly recommended to fans like Stevie Wonder, Sting and Brian Ferry, because Oriol Jean Baptiste share similar creative values with the aforementioned performers, while still maintaining a very strong personal twist. Musically, the song has a fantastic 80s-inspired sound that will transport you back in time to the era of big melodies, huge synth tones and neon lights. The mesmerizing tempo and catchy melody will have you tapping your feet and singing along in no time, but the song combines energy and soothing ambiance in equal parts. The synth-heavy instrumentation is reminiscent of classic 80s pop hits, while the powerful vocals add a modern twist to the music. This song is the perfect blend of old and new, and it's sure to get stuck in your head for days. The cherry on top is actually Oriol Jean Baptiste’s voice, which is nothing short of extraordinary on “GOD’s LOVE.” His voice is so soothing and emotional, yet at the same time, it's deep, sultry, and energetic. When Oriol sings, his voice effortlessly glides through a wide range, displaying remarkable control and versatility. What sets Oriol's voice apart is the inherent emotion and passion he infuses into every word. Whether he's singing a tender ballad or an upbeat anthem, his voice carries an inherent sense of honesty and vulnerability that draws people in.
Despite the soothing quality of his voice, Oriol's performances also possess an underlying energy that elevates his artistry.  The synth-wave style is characterized by its dreamy, atmospheric qualities, and the synthesizers on "GOD's LOVE" embody this aesthetic perfectly. From the very first notes, the listener is greeted with shimmering, ethereal pads that create a sense of depth and space. These instruments serve as a foundation, enveloping the entire composition with a rich and immersive sonic landscape that matches Oriol’s voice to absolute perfection.
Overall, the synthesizers on "GOD's LOVE" combine the best of both worlds—the dreamy, atmospheric qualities of synth-wave with the nostalgia-inducing sounds of the 80s. They create a beautiful sonic landscape that is both captivating and evocative, transporting the listener to a realm of shimmering nostalgia and contemporary allure. In addition, the song has a very powerful and inspiring message as well, as Oriol is more than just an entertainer. He wants to make an impact on the world with his art! As the title suggests, the song serves as a testament to the enduring strength and transformative influence of faith in our lives. It inspires people through its captivating melodies and heartfelt lyrics, creating a truly one-of-a-kind formula.
The song's uplifting chorus serves as an anthem of praise and gratitude, inviting listeners to join in the celebration of God's love. It emphasizes the transformative power of faith, reminding us that God can truly show us the way. The lyrics touch upon the core human experiences of hope, redemption, and the quest for meaning, making it a profoundly relatable and impactful piece. It serves as a reminder that no matter our background, beliefs, or circumstances, we are all united in our search for purpose and our longing for love and divine guidance. Still, even without thinking about the lyrics and the meaning, this is an amazing song in its own right musically! The song's production is masterfully executed, with each element thoughtfully placed and expertly balanced. The mix is pristine, allowing every instrument and vocal to shine through with clarity and impact. From the shimmering synthesizers to the crisp percussions and rich basslines, every sonic layer is carefully crafted, creating a lush and immersive sonic landscape.
Find out more about Oriol Jean Baptiste, and do not miss out on GOD’s LOVE. This release is currently available on some of the very best digital streaming services.

WERE YOU KIDDING ABOUT THE ASK GAME if not i dont have any specific lyrics in mind but i always thought the lyrics to the mill were so cool and maybe you could get some thoughts out of them? :0
YEAH GOD OKAY LET’S TALK ABOUT THE MILL. LET’S TALK ABOUT UHHHHHHHHH [THROWS DARTBOARD]
Tumblr media
this line. this MIGHT go on for a while so i will............  readmore
so the mill feels kind of notably different to the rest of the pafl songs, which tend to be unusually literal for lyric, either straightforward retellings of events (punch it, punk!) or character piece monologues set to plot visuals (strike 3) or both (all of them, but for instance particularly comfort zone, which is just dmitry’s horrible manifesto until it gets hijacked by a death sentence in the second verse.) the mill is a lot more like what we expect from poetry these days, which is to say it’s heavy on imagery, low on clarity, and fucking confusing!
I’ll draw a circle in the sand, drive myself around the bend in a desperate attempt to hold on to your battered hand Rocked to sleep beneath the snow, she is bathed in youthful glow ‘Strong enough to let it go,’ he says, but darling, I don’t know
a lot of the mill is about circles. this is in the name: a mill is something which turns. a waterwheel is a circle, a grindstone is a circle. it’s even in the melody: the chorus is a cyclic, pentatonic four-note riff that keeps going up and down and up its own ladder, chasing its own tail, not really reaching resolution. and then it’s also in, you know, the story:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
the meat grinder!!!! everyone’s favorite fucking hellhole!!!! it is only semi-explicitly identified in the song but that’s because it’s a concept from the source material - both tarkovsky’s stalker and roadside picnic feature the meat-grinder, as a location nicknamed thus by stalkers because it is even more fucking deadly than the rest of the zone, all of which is already ridiculously fucking deadly, and if you’ve seen the movie:
Tumblr media
it is more or less instantly recognizable in the mill as well. so here we have a circle! here we have a mill (the title has about seventy double meanings but this is certainly one of them,) and as it turns out, this mill at least will absolutely kill you. and horribly too. interestingly though, in roadside picnic (the book) the meat-grinder is not a tunnel, and it’s not round - it’s just a nondescript patch of ground which will wring you out like a dishcloth and kill you extremely dead if you walk into it. on the other hand what we have in the book in terms of circles is the golden ball, which is the equivalent of the movie’s the room, which is, well,
in short both stories ultimately hinge upon the idea that there is a something in the zone which can give you your heart’s desire. anything you want. everything you want. whatever you want. it is infinitely powerful; it is infinitely capable. the catch is that it will only give you what you want. the catch is that giving you what you want is not the same as giving you what you are asking for. the other catch is that in both cases you have to get through the meat-grinder first.
(so, by the way, what the fuck, right? does pafl’s zone have a wish-granting factory? is it also behind the grinder? where were the original trio going when they got themselves fucked up? and did they get there?)
but the point is: the golden ball, the wish-granting factory, is also a circle. it’s just sort of a sphere. it’s a big round fuckin yellow thing. you know, sorta like:
Tumblr media
which is THE ONLY TIME yellow is used in occam’s razor not counting the full-colour shots, and it drives me CRAZY, but it is also me going full conspiracy board so let’s not even worry about it. THE POINT IS.
the circle is the death-machine and the wish-machine. neither of these things are really.... very good. the circle, or at least the arc, is also very closely associated with death:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(розовая дуга предрассветного, ‘rose arc of pre-dawn’. if i’ve fucked up that nominative please feel free to stone me to death!)
in the gdoc notes to message lost ferry briefly refers to the dawn as if it were a good thing, the dawn of hope, which is a usage that sort of agrees with the desolate and deathless hope of strike 3′s ‘everything will pass / a day will come,’ but on the other hand it really is very closely associated with dying. nikolai bites it; nikita bites it; sergei and olga left significant chunks of themselves behind. and the thing about ‘this too shall pass’ is that it’s always true, as is ‘everything ends’, but of course that’s ‘cause the thing that ends might be you. and as we know
Tumblr media
dawn is an ending. so that seems concerning!
i think the circle, the arc, the bolt falling back to the ground, is not a good thing. i am getting a little conspiracy board here in general but forgive me, i cannot make you a wholesome answer, my wit’s diseased. i think the circle is an enclosed space. it’s an unbroken cycle. it’s the grindstone. it’s the mill. it’s about what pafl’s always been about: about being trapped, about having no chances, about being bordered upon. the circle’s the geometric figure of equidistance from a given point, and you can walk on it forever, and nothing will ever change; you will never get closer, you will never get further away, you will never get out! the sun rises, the sun sets, and you are no closer to anything you wanted. it’s worth noting that anya’s borderline city, the zone-edge port town she complains is trying to crush all her dreams, her mill
Tumblr media
is a circle. (a cog in a machine! a grind-wheel! a cage!)
and yura, whose dreams have already been burned out of him, who starts the series already resigned to never getting out of here, calls it ‘this dire deja-vu’, i am specifically resisting putting the accent marks back onto that, which is to say, it’s a repetition that haunts him. it’s going round and round and getting nowhere.
Tumblr media
so if we bring it back around: drawing a line in the sand, as the phrase is generally used, means setting a border, means saying this far and no further. often it’s yourself you’re setting the border for. you hit some divide you can’t abide crossing so you say this stops here, it may be too early or too late, but i say it stops here. so logically: drawing a circle in the sand means you’ve locked yourself in completely.
I’ll draw a circle in the sand, drive myself around the bend in a desperate attempt to hold your battered hand
the whole first half of this song, i think, is olga promising to grind herself down in a hundred ways if it means she won’t be left alone. how hard can it be to never let it overflow? she may feel lower than the low, she may wish she could just disappear out here, into the postindustrial rust, but though it gets harder all the time she will keep pretending. she isn’t going to burden sergei, or indeed anyone, with her problems, her fears, her scars. she is hurt, but she’s used to it, she’s gotten used to being haunted long ago. she keeps her bad eye covered. she stays within her circle she has drawn. she keeps going round and round. she will take the smallest sliver of human connection and be happy, she promises she will be happy, she promises she won’t ask for more, she will take just the ‘hello.’
but you knooooow it’s not true. you know it’s grinding her down, that she’ll be milled to nothing pretty soon, and really she knows it too.
Tumblr media
i am perhaps seventy percent sure that this line is a reference to the windmills of your mind by michel legrande, which features such lines as
Like a tunnel that you follow to a tunnel of its own Down a hollow to a cavern where the sun has never shone Like the circles that you find in the windmills of your mind
which on one hand seems sort of obscure to be a purposeful reference but on the other hand would be a hell of a coincidence if it wasn’t, wouldn’t it. either way it characterizes circles ambiguously, but definitely unsettlingly. going around in circles is chasing infinity, but what in god’s name would you do with it if you caught it? what are you even hoping to accomplish? and:
the second half of this song is bitterer, sharper - staring down the mouth of the meat-grinder she’s a little more willing to admit to herself that this is going nowhere. she is running out of cages to keep herself in. she is very tired. it’s easy to say why don’t you leave it all behind, it’s easy to say, she’s strong enough to let it go, it’s easy to say, too strong to die. it is a lot harder to actually live.
this is also where the flashbacks admit to us how badly hurt they really were - sergei with his whole side in shreds, she still hides her eye but at least we get to see it’s bleeding. this moral compass is forever misaligned, she says, so there is damage, and it is lasting. and she can’t settle for hello, she can’t live like this, she needs someone by her side. the trouble is whether she can believe she has any hope of getting that
Tumblr media
as for who ‘her’ is, or the ‘she’ of ‘she is bathed in youthful glow’, i figure there’s two possibilities: either it’s nadya, who haunts olga too, because nikita’s abandonment of nadya represents exactly what she most fears for herself, or it’s olga’s younger, unbroken, binocular self - both of whom were so young, and so easily hurt, and are now unfindable.
Tumblr media
and then there’s this conclusion: ‘the sun will rise, until then / i’ll be waiting for you on the other side.’ which maybe is a sort of hope after all? she’s reached no real conclusions in the zone - she knows there must be hope but she can only barely believe in it - she thinks she is destined to self-destruct. but on the other hand she still has that, a version of sergei’s own ‘a day will come’
you may be hurt, but if you can hold yourself together, you can hope for a dawn someday. an ending. a change. but the trouble’s that there’s more than one kind of ending. and there’s more than one meaning for other side. there are cages, and then there are cages. and you know what else looks like a tunnel, a circle?
Tumblr media
staring down the barrel of the gun.

Comfort Zone by Ferry is a song I didn’t like the sound of at first, but it’s grown on me
But the Lyrics have always fucked
I've found There's no reason to doubt The principle at play And when you lay the ground for progress Sacrifices are something That you have to make First give, then take
I see, you're playing me for a fool To be replaced by a less inconvenient tool I've an objection, not one you can overrule Since men like me have the right to be cruel I cannot play it cool When you look at me from above Being too good equals being not good enough Just as disposable as any other part That's all I am, all I've been from the start To your pathetic lot

(pyro here! this is very ramble-y so no obligation to read through, but im constantly thinking about the council and cant help myself)
im not sure how to start this, but there's a phrase from a song i like that i feel really describes the council, in a way? said phrase is "now, sympathy has no place in a righteous heart" and i feel like that just...really fits with the council as a whole, kinda?
im sorry for being a broken record at this point, but i find it endlessly fascinating how the council is more and more divorced from what you'd imagine them to be (in the earlier books you'd expect them to be good and kind bc Good Government but they're actually pretty horrible, and then in legacy they're actually working with the crew and are very much people, and then the oralie reveal that just sets you right back and the whole thing with kenric. just. yeah.)
like, they seem to think they're in the right, since because they're working to make their world better, but they definitely don't care about the fine details as long as everything is running smoothly on the surface (like how exillium and banishment is a thing that happens to children.) even if some are hurt by what they do, the council are still duty-bound to do what's needed to keep their people safe, and if they have to sacrifice a minority for what they think is the correct course of action, they won't be afraid to take it.
i think it's a neat detail. like, i dont think SM did it on purpose, but it's still cool to think about!
also the lyric is from the song comfort zone by ferry. sorry for the really rable-y ask with zero point to it though :|
pyro you need to stop apologizing for talking about the things that interest you /srs. You aren’t bothering me, it’s not too much. I genuinely love receiving your asks, and I love reading rambles /g (all of this is /nm and gentle btw)
you’re absolutely right, when you first start reading the books there’s this idea of ah yes, everything is perfect. Everything is working well. Including the government. They’re kind, benevolent, righteous leaders whose goodness spreads to the people and world and make it better. And then you look a little closer and see wait a minute, it’s all an illusion.
they make decisions that negatively affect the main character, they have no qualms with leaving a few out of the group to fend for themselves (exillium) for the sake of maintaining this illusion of perfection and protecting others. Good of the group is greater than that of the individual.
then Sophie starts working with them more closely and you see they’re really…human. (As in real people. I know they’re elves). They debate their decisions, they talk them out and consult others. They put things to a vote. They delegate tasks. Which in a way, can make it more horrifying because those decisions they made were intentional. It wasn’t just a backhanded “uh maybe do that and it’ll help,” it was a deliberate, conscious, agreed upon choice.
And maybe it reveals a skewed sense of right and wrong. They think they’re helping but really they’re just covering up problems that will fester beneath the surface. Or maybe the morality of their decisions is the further thing from their mind. They just want certain results and do whatever it takes to get them regardless of the implications. Sophie’s ability restrictor might be a good example of that. Locking away her powers and badly affecting the functioning of her body (with headaches and nausea) doesn’t matter to them. It’s not ideal, but not a dealbreaker. It got her to stop using her powers as long as she was wearing it, so it was worth it and the right decision to most of them. It fixed some of their interspecies problems too.
it probably wasn’t intentional, but it fascinating to think about the elven government. All the little details and things that were probably never even meant to be thought about but provide so much depth.
it’s a really interesting topic of conversation, so thank you for bringing it up!! I’m always down to talk about the council /g

I've been meaning to ask this for a while, but do you have any song or album recommendations for Apulanta? So far I've only heard Toinen jumala and Lokin päällä lokki. Absolute bangers, but I've always had a hard time listening to new songs for some reason. Guess it's a comfort zone thing? Also, do you have any other Finnish band recommendations? I just think the language sounds pretty.
AAAAAAAAAAAAAA thanks for asking about my hyperfixation and also sorry because now I cannot shut up but you can only blame yourself for that!!! XDDD
No really, I had to look for the song Toinen jumala because I remember it exists but I think it was just some special release that was not on any studio album - they do those sometimes - I am not even sure if I have listened to this song before :D But it sounds incredible!!!
Anyway, both of those songs are in their nu-metal style. And the song and album recommendations really depend on what you want from music. They have a quite long history - the band was founded in 1991 and they have been through lots of changes what comes to their musical style - still somehow they have managed to sound like Apulanta for all these years and I don’t know any other band that would sound exactly like them. No song on an album is like the other and you can’t listen to just one song and think you have heard the whole album now. (Sounds familiar eh? :D) Anyway, I’d say they kinda went from punk to “melodic minor key pop” - that is an actual description of their first album, which didn’t sell as well because they made what they thought people wanted to hear instead of what they wanted to play (but I love the album too!) - and then back to punk after almost breaking up because people didn’t like them that much. From punk rock they evolved to alternative rock, to a bit harder nu-metal sounding music. In 2004 their bassist left the band after 7 albums, and this is the time when I kinda grew out of their music and stopped listening to them.
I found the newer music only last year or something, I was never interested in it because it was too metallic for me and the songs I heard from the radio were either uninteresting or too slow for me. But that was a mistake I made because I literally judged the whole albums based on just a few single songs and those did not tell the truth of the albums. I really learnt to like those albums, but my favorites will be forever their first 5 albums.
So I see you have now heard only newer songs. I don’t really even like Lokin päällä lokki, because I have never understood nu-metal. Explains why I wasn’t that much into their albums Heinola 10 (6th, 2001) or especially Hiekka (7th, 2004). Heinola 10 still has several very awesome songs but I have never really gotten behind Hiekka, even today.
So, shortly: if you want punk, listen to Ehjä (2nd, 1996) or Kolme (3rd, 1997). If you prefer alternative and a bit more metallic rock, also accompanied with string instruments, then go for Aivan kuin kaikki muutkin (4th, 1998) or Plastik (5th, 2000). Plastik is actually my favorite album of all these, but I’m also love Ehjä and Kolme, and am very fond of their first album: Attack of the A.L. People (1995). They also have tons of great b-sides so the single compilation albums are great too.
From the newer albums the lates 2 are my favourites and I actually like to divide their history into two: old Apulanta (1991-2004) and new Apulanta (2005->), mainly because I was a fan when I was 9 yeras old and old Apulanta was a part of my childhood, but then I had a pause and found them again in 2008 or 2009, and started listening to the “new Apulanta albums” for the first time pretty much a decade later.
This is the song that peaked my interest after years, it was the first punk sounding new AL song I had heard ever since their late 90s era and I liked this song a lot and it still slaps!!! The song is called Zombeja! and here’s it’s music video too:
youtube
I’ll put more songs from different eras and styles under the cut! The max amount of videos in one post if 5 so I’ll put the audio ones behind links.
For other band recommendations - there’s plenty of bands but it really depends on what is the genre and other things you’re going for. I don’t think I can put too many videos in one so I can e.g. reblog this post with videos from other bands I like - I’m not too fond of Finnish music as it’s mostly metal or boring Finnrock and I don’t like those really. Or you can also send another ask where you specify what you would like to hear so I can try to find something that’d match that.
OLDER STUFF:
Systeemi kusee - from their punk era. At this point they still had two singer-guitarists. The title means “The system sucks”.
ATTACK OF THE A.L. PEOPLE:
youtube
Here’s my favorite song, Aurinkoon (”To the sun”), with a video where it’s a playback but for some reason the recording is not in sync at all but I can’t find a better video of this at all. I think someone filmed it from a dvd from tv screen.
Päivästä toiseen (”Day after day”), no words, it’s a bit slow but I think it’s really pretty!
EHJÄ:
youtube
...silti onnellinen (”...still happy”). The second and third album were very similar but not in a bad way.
Mitä kuuluu? was the hit that was their breakthrough. It was first released on an ep called “Hajonnut”, “Broken” in English, and they were going to break up if it didn’t work. But it did work, better than ever, so they stayed together and that’s why the second album was named as Ehjä, “Intact”.
KOLME:
youtube
Mitä vaan (”Anything”) is one of my favorite songs still day, of all time.
Mato (”Worm”), this is hilarious. I love the lyrics but unfortunately can’t translate them right now :D
AIVAN KUIN KAIKKI MUUTKIN:
youtube
Hallaa/008 (”Frost”) is just so. good. Also the video is interesting, it’s very gore and has nothing to do with the song itself :D Their old bassist directed all of these old videos of theirs.
Teit meistä kauniin/007 is one of their most famous songs. On this album they didn’t give the songs any titles, they gave only numbers to them and because of that I still am not entirely sure what are all the songs on the album. I don’t have names for them and I only remember the single releases and other songs that ended up having names in public. It’s interesting.
PLASTIK:
Käännä se pois (”Turn it away”), I just... this is very similar to the next song but I love them both - this might be the one whose audio I remember from my childhood.
Odotus (”Waiting”), I remember this music video from my childhood. It’s my only actual memory of the time when I was a “fan” of them. The actor in the video was in a Finnish soap opera (that my mom didn’t let me watch but I watched it was my cousins’) and I was very confused of why he was in the video and if it was him. Somehow didn’t understand what an actor is.
Terä: with a video but low quality OR better audio but no video, I’m linking this only because it’s one of my favorites and really shows how this album can yet again be so diverse!
Ei yhtään todistajaa, this just slaps and also has a cool video for it.
Maailmanpyörä (”Ferris Wheel”), absolutely one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard. EVER.
^You can see maybe that it’s my favorite album :D I just can’t decide only one song!
OTHER STUFF:
They have also made two English albums - both have songs with lyrics either translated into English or with completely new English lyrics but all the songs are originally in Finnish. With the second one they clearly have rerecorded the whole songs but with the first one they have just done the vocals:
Viper Spank
Apulanta (Import) - I think this is actually an English version of their 2002 album Heinola 10.
***
Okay I think this is enough for now! Here are lots of my favorite songs, lots of videos (unfortunately there’s no better quality versions of the old videos anywhere) and way too much text! I hope you’re not overwhelmed and feel free to ask if there’s something you want to know! You can also see my Apulanta tag for newer songs (and also for some older ones) since I’ve been hyperfixating on the newer albums a lot lately (I saw them live in last February and never recovered lol).
I think I won’t talk about other bands here now - except if you are interested in comedy rock or fun punk, then there’s Klamydia. But I think I should do an individual post about them in that case. Anyhow, check this song from my favorite album, the song is called Ooko tehny lenkkiä (pyörällä ilman penkkiä) aka “Have you driven a bike (without the saddle)” and, well, the lyrics are what you can imagine them to be too :D The sound of that song just clicked to me and had so much dä energy I just had to listen to them even more :D Let me know if you want to know more about them too, tho with them the fun part literally is in the lyrics (and sometimes in videos) so it might be difficult to understand things sometimes.

Cabin Getaway (Ashton Irwin)
Ok, SOOOO I came up with a little bit of a different thing that I want to try out so bare with me. So as you probably know I do masterposts about our boys with different themes to them. But I do like to come up with specific scenarios for pictures a lot of the time, so I decided to try something new. Basically, I’m going to be putting 4 or 5 pictures in a post (that all fit the same theme) and write small scenario blurbs for each of them. And this is the first one I wrote tonight, so pls let me know what you think of it, I’d really appreciate it :)
The general scenario: You’re on an extended weekend trip with your boyfriend Ashton to your parent’s cabin in the mountains in a forest a two hour drive away from your house. There’s a lake right by the cabin and a fire-pit outside. So it’s just a nice getaway from the hecticness of the city.
Tumblr media
So it’s your first night at the cabin. You’ve just eaten some amazing chili con carne that you made on the fireplace outside, a recipe your dad taught you after years of begging him to teach you. And now you’re both stuffed and Ashton decides to bring out the guitar he found lying around the cabin. You’re both sitting outside by the fire, bundled up in hoodies, since it’s actually a pretty cold evening, despite it being the middle of May. After a couple of minutes of him tuning the guitar. Ash starts strumming away, and softly singing some Fleetwood Mac. Every couple of minutes he looks over at you adoringly and changes the lyrics to something about you. Like the way he loves it when you smile when he does something stupid, or when you fidget with your fingers if you don’t know how to express your feelings, or how you always listen intently to him ramble about music and things he’s passionate about. He sets down the guitar after a while, and scoots closer to you, putting his arm across your shoulders to let you lean into him, telling you he’s so glad you decided to bring him here and just enjoy each other’s company. You sit in comfortable silence for a long time, occasionally leaning up to press a soft kiss to his lips and his jaw. He quietly hums a beautiful melody while the fire slowly dies down. And it’s the perfect ending to your first evening.
Tumblr media
You decide since it’s a lovely day out, you should take the boat your neighbor let’s you use out on the lake. It’s 3pm, you’re blasting music from your relaxed oldies playlist on your portable speakers. Ashton sits on the outside deck I have no idea what parts of boats are called so don’t @ me lol and leans back to take in the beautiful weather putting both his arms on the railing behind him. You stand at the front of the boat, putting it in neutral and just let the boat sit there for a while. You join him on deck, laying down beside him with your head in his lap. He gently starts to stroke through your hair and you talk about your uni work you have to do next week, his song writing, your friends back home, the mountains, the sea and basically everything and nothing at the same time. You enjoy each other’s presence. And you get this warm feeling in your heart, knowing that as long as you two are together you can be happy, and you can talk about the sad moments, the happy moments and the inbetween moments. You intertwine your right hand with his left putting them across your stomach and play with his fingers, while he looks out onto the lake and admires the view.
Tumblr media
It’s 7pm and you’ve had a lazy day of sitting outside reading, playing music, singing and dancing along some of your favorite songs. You’re sitting on the sofa channel surfing through the tv, when Ashton comes back from the kitchen with two cups of beer for you guys and Pizza he ordered. You decide on watching Criminal Minds on Amazon. You sit on the sofa fully immersed, watching the episode that’s currently playing. Ashton sits on your left adoringly watching you mouth along to the episode and slightly chuckling. You turn to him with a questioning look, and he says that you’re so cute when you mouth along to the episodes and questions why you even watch them if you know them by heart. You give him a disbelieving look and tell him that Criminal Minds is something you can watch over and over again much like Harry Potter. It’s 9:30pm you’ve had 3 beers and you’ve shifted positions on the couch so that you’re both laying down and you have your head on his chest with his right arm wrapped around you. You look up to see Ashton fighting to stay awake and you slightly nudge him and ask if he wants to head to bed. He stirs and asks what time it is. You tell him, and he says that he doesn’t want to go to bed yet, but just stay here for a little longer with you in his arms in front of the tv and the fireplace that’s making you feel very cozy. You agree and settle back on his chest. It’s 10:45pm and Ashton wakes up from his mini nap only to see you looking up at him adoringly. He smiles and presses a kiss to your forehead telling you he loves you. He sits up to look outside, and then looks back at you smirking, asking you if you want to go skinny dipping in the lake. You think about it for a second, look at the clock, and tell him you’ll get another round of beers, some towels and blankets.
Tumblr media
It’s your last full day at the cabin and Ashton has been up since the crack of dawn just walking around with the guitar strumming away, playing melodies he has come up with over the last couple of days. You sit on the Hollywood swing that’s on the outside deck just watching him doing his thing. You could watch him come up with new music, and play all day long. He gets this focused look on his face, his eyebrows slightly knit together in concentration, and he bites his lip every now and then. He’s so in his zone and tunes out everything else when he’s creating new music. You decide to let him work in peace for a little while and head inside to make some lunch. After half an hour, you hear an excited yell from outside and you go to Ashton to find out what he’s so excited about. He’s practically jumping in excitement, and you ask what he’s come up with. He giggles and asks you to sit down so he can play you the chorus melody he came up with. He then leans down to give you a kiss and asks if you also want to hear the lyrics he came up with. You, of course agree and sit down once again. He sits down on the ground in front of you, playing the chords and starts singing. After three lines, you realize the song he wrote is about you and the first date you two went on to a local fair. You had the best time, eating cotton candy, playing the different games at the booths and finally riding the ferris wheel were he first kissed you. You tear up at the memory, and the sweetness of him writing a song about it. You can tell this means a lot to him, because normally he doesn’t write song that are particularly happy in lyrics. You get up wiping the tears from your cheeks, sit beside him and pull him in for a long, emotional kiss, hoping to portray with this kiss how much you love him, how much this means to you, and how happy you are to have him in your life.
ok so this is the first time I’ve tried writing anything, and I hope it didn’t turn out too bad. Feel free to leave me feedback :) tagging my girls: @lashtoncurls @myloverboyash @5-secondsofcolor @ashtoniwir @baby-loba @burncrashbromance @hearts-to-the-sky @lashtondaddies @irwinkitten @astroashtonio @singledadharrington @dontstopstan @gorgeouslygrace @sugarcoated-pain @singt0mecalum @tequila-clifford @naivelystan @dukesnumber1 @h0tsos

Research
The goal for my project is to answer the question, Why is BTS influential? The main parts of them that I focused on were their lyrics, personalities, and performances. Let us start with their lyrics. What makes it special? Their lyrics break barriers by dealing with social issues that are seen as taboo on the media. For example the member, Min Yoongi, openly talked about his depression and social anxiety through his song ‘The Last’ in his mixtape Agust D. This gave representation to the teens who deal with mental illnesses. It encourages people to talk about these issues rather than hide from them. Other songs they have as a group that deal with social issues include Go Go, N.O, Silver Spoon, No More Dream, and 21st Century Girl. They have way more but these are just a few examples.
The thing that really ties into their influence is their personality. They are really caring and sincere. Through a survey I made through google forums their have been many responses saying they feel like BTS show a “authentic, raw display of who they are”. This is important because this makes them look trustworthy meaning more people would listen to the messages they are trying to send. With their popularity they have started project like the Love Myself campaign with UNICEF to stop violence against teens and children. They have done other charities in the past, one of them being the Ferry Disaster. They donated money to help those families affected by the disaster. They did not share information on their charity because “they believe that you don’t make donations so that you can tell people about it.” The only reason the information was because information was leaked.
Their performances although not as serious as the other two reasons, is just as impressive. Two of the members come from a background of dancing, they have attended performing art schools and studied dance. Jimin for example at one point was at the top of his class in Busan High School of Arts. Some of the other members like Kim Namjoon and Kim Seokjin came into the group with no experience. They worked hard and practiced long hours to perfect the dances and through the years have improved drastically. This shows how they are passionate and willing to step out of their comfort zone to give the best performance as possible.

The Decemberists Change Direction And It Sounds Good
For fifteen years The Decemberists have been the thinking person’s go-to Folk/Pop ensemble. The Portland quintet has resembled something like a 21st century American version of the late-Sixties British Folk Rock pioneers Fairport Convention, combining intelligent and literate songwriting with an array of different traditional and modern folk idioms using both male and female voices.
The band’s front man Colin Meloy may have an unusual goat-like voice, and his lyrics are sometimes a little too English-major smart, but he’s got a great ear and a fine sense of songcraft and you can tell he is well-versed in Rock history. In a press release announcing the band’s upcoming eighth album I’ll Be Your Girl, Meloy said that the band decided to exploit some different Rock influences for the new record.
youtube
He felt that the band played it too safe on their last album, and he wanted to move out of their familiar Folk Pop comfort zone. The direction they decided to move in comes as a bit of a surprise:
We were talking about music and our references. It kept coming back to Roxy Music and early glam, and we dove in with that in mind. The Decemberists are a record-collectors’ band, we’re all fans and scholars of music, so there a lot of touch points that we all get, but they don’t always come through. So we were trying to embrace that Bryan Ferry aspect, that kind of set the tone.
You can certainly hear that Roxy Music feel – “exuberant nihilism” Meloy calls it – on the first single to be released from the album, “Severed”. It’s for sure a big departure for the band. You got synth beats running throughout, and by golly you’ve got big crunchy guitar chords in a Decemberists song for the first time ever. Throw in a typically smart and ominous lyric and I think they’ve got something really interesting going on here. Full marks to Meloy for having the courage to change things up so drastically. I’ll Be Your Girl hits the shelves on March 16.

Loves Me / Loves Me Not
Second installment is here <3
Milo Hunter - Meet Me in the Morning
https://soundcloud.com/user-368182540/meet-me-in-the-morning
Definitely one of the best diy-recordings and mixes I’ve heard in a long time. It’s sometimes hard to pinpoint “exactly” what makes the diy tracks stand out - naturally you’ll need sincere emotion - you can feel in the vocals if someone isn’t being honest, it sticks out - it’s like you see it in someone’s eyes in a conversation.
There’s an atmosphere to good diy or lo-fi projects - there’s not a “Certain” sound although we can agree whats “not” diy or lo-fi in the vibe. However, enough ramblings about something that can be interpreted in so many ways - this track here is good, it’s comforting to say the least.
It has that smooth sailing vibe, like cutting through butter, that you get from War on Drugs, but the vocals is more of a Daniel Johnston feeling.  It’s nice, I even think the drums are midi yet I don’t really care, it works - its important - there are not rules, if it works then fuck the rules.
Living Hour - Most
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9PLa5qJ0gxI
This is more of a zone-out track. It’s ambient, Don’t plan on taking this for a walk cause you’ll just want to sit down and wait for the sunset.
If I were to listen to this anywhere I would try to find the most remote location of your city or town - old industrial district with some rooftop access, a waterfront not many people visit, or a nice big open field or woodlands area.
I’ve recently also had noise-cancelling headphones on my mind - songs like this would be enough reason to go out and get a pair, its so fucking emersive I just want to lie down and stay here forever.
B-day - Lojo
https://soundcloud.com/happyb_day/lojo
https://open.spotify.com/album/5UXYUDAbiHD9iPIZ3ZWdID
You won’t be going anywhere fast with B-day, you don’t need to either - they got you covered right there still in bed with your blanket watching re-runs of old 70s series eating ice-cream out of the bucket. If they paired  Ferris Bueller’s Day Off with a Cheech and Chong movie and I got to choose the theme-song - this would be it.
This track right here is the Pepto Bismol of music - you’re gonna want just a little more of that lovely pink feelin’.
The Oxen - Earthbound
https://theoxen.bandcamp.com/track/earthbound-2
https://open.spotify.com/album/3EpG6mOWw0kdurtuU7LFFG
I fucking love this track - I bet this is exactly how a collaboration between Daniel Johnston and Ty Segall would have sounded like in 2010.
Vocals are ace on this - slightly distorting, nice singer. If you’re into the diy and more noisy approach you’ll be silently saying thank you all the times those fuzzed out guitars block out almost everything else - that’s the perfect use of guitars like that - they’re not supposed to be hiding, they’re the most beautiful way to give someone the middle finger in the most loving of ways.

Ratnang is definitely the Lou Reed of New Delhi - I’ve listened to music from there and never heard anyone going down this path yet.
Ratnang did also record this in Brookly with people he met during travels, who all helped make his new EP what it is today.
There’s nothing much to fuzz about on this one - it drags itself along slowly reminding me slightly of Heroin from The Velvet Underground & Nico - it might not have the frenzied aestetic of that record - this is a more smooth War on Drugs approach. Vocals and lyrics are also on no great mission to impress you, Ratnang, it seems, is just sharing a story of lost love and how it always seems to play out - it will be alright in the end, it’s just going to take time - don’t worry too much, just focus on the good stuff and treat people you meet well.
Ratnang - if I’m ever in New Delhi you’ll be the first one I’ll give a call <3
