People going on about how they're representing this whole Greek thing are missing that that one anon had a pretty good point about how "cultural appropriation" rhetoric gets misused. People do really need to be more specific about what the issue is, or it very easily turns into basically just arguing for cultural segregation. I've seen that happen numerous times on this website over the years. I've seen people argue that it's appropriative to do something like *learn about* another culture or learn its language. I think it's really important for people to keep an eye on what are the actual issues with cultural appropriation (mostly about exploitation and colonialism) and not just the idea that cultural mixing is bad, or that being interested in a culture that isn't your own is bad. Because the truth is, whether you intend this or not, if you're just arguing that everyone should only keep to the culture of their ethnicity or their place of origin or both, then you're basically in agreement with white supremacists. It's not that cultures mixing is bad; most culture is a result of some mixture. It's when it's done in a way that's exploitative and/or disrespectful: like reducing sacred symbols like indigenous war bonnets to a fashion accessory, or incorporating the art of another culture into your own art without giving credit and without paying anyone from that culture who taught you or added to your work.
FTR, I don't think you can "appropriate" ancient mythologies. I think people are getting twisted around though because there is a genuine history of colonial exploitation of Greek artifacts by colonial powers to fill their museums, as with the Elgin marbles. I do think it's still a good idea to be properly informed about them, regardless, at the very least because those make for the more interesting retellings. For all that people (who IME, largely haven't read it, I'd love to hear if people who have read it disagree though) rag on Song of Achilles, I actually thought it was a pretty good example of a retelling because the author, who has an educational background in mythology, takes great pains to try to recreate the society and cultural norms of Greece at that time rather than sugarcoat it. Achilles may be even more of a jerk than he was in the original Iliad, tbh. It's telling to me that the author's other books that are less "shippy" don't have as negative of a reputation on here in that regard as Song of Achilles, despite being fairly similar, and it makes me wonder how much of that is because it's popular among "fujoshi fandom" so people just assume it MUST be shallow and fandomified, and I was super shocked at how much it really wasn't that at all. As well as I saw that a lot of people expecting something more like that were disappointed by all the period-accurate misogyny and so on.
Which brings me to another point: another reason I'm skeptical of a lot of this discourse is that it seems like often it's more of a high-culture, low-culture thing. A thing that is popular with M/M fanfic writers can't POSSIBLY be doing it right. A thing that is a popular video game or Tony-winning Broadway musical that is popular with the fandoms for those things, can't possibly be accurate. And I get that a lot of that is because a lot of populist things that took from Greek mythology have been inaccurate (Disney's Hercules, for instance) but if you're going to criticize the accuracy of something, I think it is worth engaging with the original work and what it actually does rather than just assuming It's Popular It Must Suck. It feels like a lot of this turns into lording that you were into it before X over others. And being aware that Tumblr Recommendations often do a poor job of actually giving you a good idea of what the work is really like.
As well as, of course, asking yourself - as we should with any sort of historical inaccuracy etc. - if the inaccuracy was deliberate or not. Sometimes people are not really telling that story in order to tell the most accurate version of something but to make a different kind of point, and so the changes might be deliberate. I would argue this is true with something like Hadestown.
That doesn't mean you can't still dislike it for that reason, of course. I know a lot of classical musicians who dislike the movie Amadeus for being so inaccurate about Mozart's and Salieri's lives. I like it despite that because I think the point it is trying to make is stronger for not sticking to the historical fact. I just wish more people did know the historical fact, though.

AITA for getting someone removed from a TTRPG group and not telling them why?
This happened about a week ago, and I feel awful. I (17ftm), and my 3 friends are a fairly close-knit TTRPG group. We recently lost a player due to scheduling issues, and thought we'd like to find a new player so our game could have 4 players instead of 3. The DM (21m) and I interviewed a few people, until we found C (23f).
To note, I am the youngest of the group by four years, and the only minor. The rest of the group are fairly protective of me due to this and some severe trauma I went through before we met. I have trouble voicing my opinions and discomfort because of said trauma.
When C joined the group, she seemed wonderful! The only thing of note was that she said she wanted to flirt with the campaign BBEG, a well-known vampire lord in the module. This was fine, and the DM's partner (21f) gave her okay.
However, when I began to post art of my character, C started acting odd. My character is a very nervous vampire, and he's the youngest and shortest of the group (though he is an adult). Apparently, C found him attractive, and whenever I drew him or brought him up C would say how she wanted her bard to flirt with him, or how she "has to ship him" because he was slightly Rapunzel-inspired. She also seemed to like how sheltered he was, and his relative innocence, talking about how he wouldn't understand flirting and not giving up even when him being uninterested in romance was flat out stated.
We also found out that she had been tracing art, and routinely said she couldn't come to sessions less than an hour before, with no other warning.
Where I might be TA is that I was made very uncomfortable, but didn't speak out. The DM asked me multiple times if I wanted her gone, but I didn't want to just boot her with no big reason.. Eventually I confided that she was making me dread playing our game, and later that day the DM told me he had removed her. He didn't respond to her asking why, and she reached out to me to ask, but also said she wanted to draw my character, which made me very nervous due to how she talked about him and the art she'd done before, which involved... very little clothing. I haven't responded to her and I don't know if I should, but I feel I'm TA for not at least seeing how she was in game before telling the DM.

I've been drawing for 6 years now. It's been an incredible journey through all that time! My very first drawings were of nature. 🌿 But when My oldest sister was learning to draw this art style called Manga, I instantly fell in love with it! So I started looking for tutorials. I drew and drew Manga characters, filling out multiple drawing books with them. 📚
So lets say 5 years past now and I'm falling in love with tmnt. ❤🐢 (Specifically the rise versions.) You'd think I would have started small, like drawing a picture or two of the rise tmnt characters, but noooo, I literally started with a comic! 📝 A Brains and Brawn comic called 'Trust Fall'. (I've been meaning to post it here on Tumblr, but haven't gotten around to it.) But back then I was too scared to post my comics. "What if people don't like them? What if people think I'm weird for liking these characters??" Is what I thought.
But that's when I came across Corpuscraft on Ao3. They had a comic with similar ideas to what I wanted to make with my comics. It showed me that others did like what I liked, and that I wasn't alone! But the unfortunate truth is people talked behind Corpuscraft's back and said awful things about their story and art style. 💔 They ended up not finishing the story and even eventually taking the comic off the web, all because some people were jerks. But when all that happened, I had a fire start in me, and this whole situation made me stronger! 🗡🙂🛡 Lord bless the person behind the name Corpuscraft, and help them find peace in their time of trouble.

Warnings: none!
Summary: reader is Daphne's childhood best friend who has returned from studying abroad. Daphne insists that the reader accompanies her to her debut, perhaps Daphne won't be the only one catching the attention of a lord.
"It'll be fun" Daphne insists as you follow her to her bedroom "besides what better way to announce to everyone that you're back!"
"Daphne, I haven't seen these people in four years," you sigh "it's all a bit sudden to just burst into a ballroom is it not?" You make your way to Daphne's bed and she follows.
Daphne giggles, "I thought you were fond of the dramatics?"
You roll your eyes but ultimately she is right. You had taken four years abroad to study the arts- drama, literature, music, etc. but that didn't mean you had the confidence of a Shakespearean actress. As you glance at Daphne you realize how foolish you are being. You shouldn't be the one who is nervous, your childhood best friend is about to make her debut in this year's social season and all you can think about is yourself. Suddenly Daphne places her hand on yours. "Please y/n, for me?" And you realize that Daphne is just as nervous as you are. You smile and take a deep breath. "Alright-" before you can finish Daphne has started squealing and tackles you backwards onto the bed with a hug.
"Thank you, thank you, thank you!"
You laugh, "but only because you're my best friend."
Daphne smiles as you both sit up, her eyes lighting up with the possibilities this night holds.
"I'll have to help you pick out a dress! Ooh and we can get our hair done together and you can borrow some of my rouge, I just got a new shade and-"
"Woah slow down, I don't want to outshine the future diamond of the season," you tease.
Daphne's cheeks flush, "well we don't know that for certain..."
"Oh please, don't try to be so humble," you say getting up "you will be marvelous." You take a few steps back and start walking toward Daphne, once you've reached her you give an uneven curtsey and a bow. "As long as you do better than that you shall be fine. Plenty of lords will come running to you."
Daphne laughs and you do too. It feels good to be back at home with everybody, well almost everybody. There's still one person you were hoping to see.
"Speaking of lords," Daphne says mischievously "are you sure there's no one you want to be dressing up for tonight?"
"Tonight isn't about me," you say trying to steer the conversation away from where Daphne is leading it.
"Mhmm? But if there was..." Daphne stretches out her vowels playfully.
"There isn't..." You reply, mocking Daphne's tone.
"Oh I was just teasing. Besides, I don't know what time Anthony will be back."
Your breath hitches. Obviously, as your best friend, Daphne has been entrusted to know your crushes. Although she might have found out this one for herself much to your displeasure. But it's not a big deal anymore, maybe it would've been four years ago but not now. Now it means nothing.
"Just a silly childhood crush," you say dismissingly "I've met much more, um, cultured gentlemen during my time abroad."
"Oh of course," Daphne replies jokingly.
"No I'm serious! Artists are far more charming than lords. And besides, how can I still like someone I haven't seen in four years?" You say, trying to convince yourself rather than Daphne.
"Alright, alright I believe you y/n! Now come on, let's get ready. Don't go creating worry lines before the celebration." Daphne gets up and heads towards her wardrobe, you follow.
"Oh yes, worry lines, of course. The biggest of my concerns."
"Hush now," Daphne says, "if you follow my advice, maybe I won't be the only one finding a match tonight."
You can't help but smile at the idea. It wouldn't be the most terrible thing in the world, would it? Spending the evening with your closest friend and perhaps finding someone to help you move on from Anthony. No, it wouldn't be so terrible.
"Alright Daphne, let's get ready."

14/02/2024 || Day 12 (dop)
TLDR:

Turns out that when I pick up extra shifts at work, I don't do anything productive when I get home -- including program. I feel like I haven't done any consistent programming since November, tbh. Hopefully I can find it in me to get back on it, but I'm definitely feeling the programming burnout.
Work
ASL class - I just want to say that today we learned about conjunctions after it was introduced to us 2 weeks ago, and dear lord will I need to sit down and practice it a bunch. I'm excited though!
Frontend Mentor - I decided that I want to wrap this project up ASAP, so of course I did only the minimum today. I got the button functionality all working, where they'll appear and disappear at appropriate times. The next thing that I'll do tmr will be to dynamically fill out the information required in the Summary step, which is depending on the user's selections throughout the form.
Art
Much like with programming, I've been putting off sketching, but this time only for the past 2 weeks. I swear, I was at a sketching high in January, where I filled a page almost every day. Especially at the end of January, because I had finished re-playing The Last of Us Part 2 and was a sketching machine filled with inspiration. But then it disappeared once I made a finished digital illustration of one of my fanart ideas. So, to combat the stagnation I feel, I did the unspeakable and picked up a pen and went in directly without pencil lines. Apparently I can't go 2 months without using pen, despite swearing it off since I used it for nearly 4 years straight. And what do you know? I had fun sketching today. I gotta say though, the best thing about drawing in pen is that the sketches really pop out of the page because they're so bold.
Also, I spent last night looking for some graphic novels I might be interested in, but a lot of ones aimed at adults have art styles and don't really vibe with me, so I started looking at kids' graphic novels and found one whose style I fell in love with! I know nothing about the plot, but I'm really hoping that the art itself can inspire me! Plus, it's a nice little Valentine's Day present to myself.

Haven't done fan art of The Thirteenth Year in a long while. Granted, I thought I did everything I could with the concept, but looking back at my old artworks (plus surfing for any new The Thirteenth Year posts on Tumblr), I feel I can do better. Body proportions needed work, and I need to veer away from realistic style (which I found to not really work in hindsight due to uncanny valley) to a more cartoonish style that still keeps true to the movie.
The Thirteenth Year's merfolk design is unique enough to be easily identified anywhere online. From the silverly tail to the webbed arms and scaly palms, it was one of the first times I saw a mermaid/merman design that was truly like a sea creature and not just a lego combination of a human's top half and a fishy bottom half.
Of course, it was not the easiest design to translate as a drawing. Cody's tail in the finale, upon closer inspection, was clearly two legs in a tail wetsuit. You can see where Cody's knees and heels are, which ruins the illusion of Cody actually becoming a merman. I prefer a more fish-like tail streamlining like H2O: Just Add Water, but I wanted to stay true to the original design as I streamline it. You can see where the knees bent, but the heels are gone. As for the face, I went with simple eye dots. There's something Disney-esque about those eye dots that make it work for me. Maybe it's because everything else leans towards realism due to capturing the likeness of the actor, but I don't know for sure.
The pose was a mermaid pose I selected from @adorkastock's reference pic collection. There's actually a reason for this pose, which I will post later this month because it's Mermay 2024.
Oh, and just because @andy-the-8th's Creatures That Defy Logic series is the only major The Thirteenth Year fan fiction/fan work out there right now (after the other fanfics have either been abandoned or finished with no hints of a follow up), I might as well give my thoughts on that series.
It's an impressive feat to build an entire society and world of the movie based on other DCOMs, small prop lists, calendars, and certain events that are different from the real world. But I find it to be very slow-paced for me and I struggle to keep up with all the details at times, especially when it focuses on the land stories. I heard that the fan fiction series exceeded the length of Tolkien's entire The Lord Of the Rings work which, while impressive, is quite daunting since I also find Tolkien's work to very slow-placed and hard for me to keep interest.
That's not to say it's bad. It's actually well-written from what I can read. It's just I'm more at heart with the world of fantasy and the world of the mermaids stimulates my imagination.

Okay so I have major writers block but I have to share my LOTR idea with yall. And I'm almost certain I am breaking so much cannon lore with the idea but I wanna do it anyway because I can. So please do not correct me, I know I'm wrong just have fun with it.
So here is my idea.
The reader is someone from here and ends up in Middle Earth. Elrond found her and put some of his blood in her to make her immortal. She technically is an elf but looks like a human. The orcs have been chasing after her for thousands of years. so Elrond, to keep her safe, sends her off to Mirkwood to stay with Thranduil. She hates it and manages to sneak out and join the dwarves on their adventures. They don't know she has elven blood in her until they meet with Elrond in Rivendell.
The scene where they are in Rivendell is where my newest idea is placed. Elrond pulls her aside and states that they (Elrond, Thranduil, Gandalf, and Galadriel) haven't been honest with her and have finally decided to open up about her true origin.

Elrond eyed you, hesitant with how much to say and how much to show. "I haven't been honest with you... How old do you think you are?"
Your eyebrows furrowed and your eyes slid to Gandalf standing beside the fountain. The three of you were outside in the courtyard, the moonlight shining down and illuminating his gray hair. "I'm around 3,000 years old..." you trailed off as you looked back to Elrond who only stared at you blankly as he gnawed on his lip. "Who found you?"
"You did, what are these questions??" you bit back, nerves finally eating away at you as dread fell over your senses. Elrond sighed before moving towards you, "I should have done this a long time ago, but I was afraid doing so would put you in danger-"
You stepped back away from him, hand coming up to stop him from advancing. "I'm scared-"
"3,000 years ago I took your memories away. I'm going to give them back. All you need to remember is that he won't hurt you... Do you trust me?"
You were frozen but slowly felt yourself nod at the one person you trusted more than anyone else on this continent. His fingers came up and rested on your forehead, "You're safe, I'll be here when you come back-"
Darkness sucked you in before he had a chance to finish his sentence. Your eyes blinked open, blearily looking around the dark space around you. Rocks stabbed into your skin and a terrible heat was making it hard to breathe. Suddenly, ugly faces hovered over you and you gasped in fright as the orcs hauled you up from the ground. Your feet were kicking and you screamed out for them to let you go as they dragged you to the castle. It had dawned on you rather swiftly that you were in Mordor.
Fear coursed through your veins as large doors opened before you, showcasing a large room with a man sitting rigidly on the throne. It felt as if the wind had been knocked out of you at the sight of the blonde man before you. You didn't know how and you didn't know why, but he felt familiar.
He felt like home.
"Why hello there... What might your name be?"
You knew who he was, knew him as the dark lord. He was the nightmare mothers would tell their children about when they were misbehaving. He was murderous. A monster.
And yet, all you felt when looking up at him was peace, as if you had been searching for him for many millennia and you finally found him.
"I'm-"
The scene shifted and suddenly multiple images and moments flashed before your very eyes. Tears started to stream down your face as you took in just how much the feared man loved you. You had begged him to give up his desire for power and control, questioning if he really loved you. That argument seemed to anger him, because he loved you more than anything, and his power would be shared with you.
The both of you would rule the world.
The scenes continued to flash quickly as the conversations morphed into a high-pitched scream before it all went silent and you were looking down at your peacefully sleeping body that was wrapped in black silk sheets. The door to the room opened and you whirled around in fright.
From the darkness emerged Elrond and it finally dawned on you that you weren't saved from Sauron.
You were taken from him.
You stepped in front of your sleeping body but Elrond moved through you as if you didn't exist, only reminding you that this was a memory.
A memory that was stolen from you.
"Oh my... What... Who is she?" Another voice came from the doorway and you knew it was one of Elrond's generals. "I thought she was a myth... But I can already see his magic wearing off... If we don't give her something, she won't last through the night..."
Your eyebrows furrowed as you looked over their shoulder and you noticed the color from your face draining. Elrond scooped you up in his arms, "Gandalf can transfer some of my life force to her, but we must hurry" he said swiftly as they moved out of the bedroom.
The scenes morphed again before flashing, showing you the memories you were allowed to remember. From waking up in Rivendell, acclimating to immortality, being transported to Mirkwood, meeting Thorin, to all the way up to now where you were on the ground kneeling in front of Elrond. Tears streaming down your face as he held you close.
You tilted your head down at the sight, confused as to why you weren't in your own body still, but you would soon get your answer. Your head fell backward, mouth opening as a scream ripped from your throat. Your chest lifted up into the air as if you were being possessed.
The scream cut off, leaving you all in silence. Gandalf was gripping his chest in disbelief as Elrond stroked your cheek with his thumb. "Y/n-"
Your head snapped forward, e/c eyes now blazing red, the same red of the lovers they stole you from.
"Y/n, wake up-" Elrond stated firmly as he tried to shake you out of it.
"I am no good nor evil, simply I am and I have come to take what is mine" The dark tone coming from your lips had you reeling back in fear, realization dawning on you that you had indeed been possessed.
Elrond paled at the words as my possessed lips slipped up into a snarling grin. He opened his mouth to curse at the dark lord in your body, but you continued. "I was there in the dark when you spilled your first blood. I am here now, as you run from me still."
Gandalf rushed forward, hand coming out to try and rip the dark lord from your body.
Your red eyes flicked to Gandalf, "Run then, child," Gandalf ignored the threat and slammed his hand onto your head, making you start to slump over. The red in your eyes started to fade and you began to feel the pull of your by-standing soul into your once-possessed body.
"You can't hide from me forever."

Linked Universe Projects
Shatterproof: I have more backstories cooking, and a half-finished fic or two, but that's about it. I plan on updating a story at least once before January
Council (1931 AU): backburner, haven't really had inspiration. Still on my radar though, and it spins through my head on occasion!
Marvelous Misadventures: been plucking away at this! I recently had an epiphany regarding the next part of the plot, so hopefully that gets me more excited to work on it
Considering expanding the coloring pages I made into a whole series, that could be cool
Misc stuff includes a couple half-abandoned oneshots, a few drawing ideas, and a major art project that probably won't happen because I'm trying not to burn myself out 😅
Four Swords Projects
Fairytale AU: recently gained fire for this again. Reread and organized all my existing material, edited the outline, and I desperately want to finish it soon. Hesitantly scheduling for before the new year. Draft currently maybe about 30% of the way, at 8k.
Isekai AU: I don't think I've mentioned this to anyone outside discord, but ta da I'm deep in this. I'm probably 90% done, about 30k. This will be a Christmas fic, I hope!!
Vampire lords AU: rambly vampire plot is going. Somewhat slowly. I've been trying to not overload myself with too much, so this has been demoted slightly. :) Bite fics happen spontaneously, though, and there might be another coming.
Rinthia AU: my original world, the one seen in Nothing New Under the Sun. This is kind of a passing thought, definitely in planning stages, but I would kind of like to expand this—see where the other characters are, give y'all some answers, because the answers are there
Non-fandom
I want to do more traditional art, graphite and watercolors mostly, and that usually means using photos or life instead of fandom stuff. Makes it a bit less exciting, but maybe I can find a way of doing that. I miss my lil oil paint studio area but I can work with what I have
I'm crafting a few Christmas presents instead of buying them because I do not have much money. That is something I need to spend like, this next week doing
Sanderson merch: I have a goal of getting a booth at Dragonsteel next December, and selling some small souvenir stuff. My plans involve making more pins (I ordered a couple already, and they're very nice), drawing some coloring pages, and maybe advertising here a little once I actually have some stuff I'm proud of up. This will ideally take a year to get together, though, so no rush.
By Month
November
I spent most of November working on The Worst Thing About Earth, kind of an impulse fic that spiraled out of control. I think I burned myself out a little on this, so I've been taking it slowly. Trying to, anyway.
December
So far, I've mostly worked on holiday gift exchanges and some backburner stuff. Like I said, I've been taking it kind of gently. I plan on finishing the FS isekai AU this month, and getting most of the way through the fairytale AU. Getting those off my plate will free me up to think about other things, I think. I also plan on maybe one more bite fic and one more LU disability AU thing before the new year.
January On
I'm not sure what the next month will bring! Ideally, I'll be wrapping up the fairytale AU and intermittently posting a few little things. I'm hoping to return to a couple of my older projects soon, mostly Marvelous Misadventures, because I've left that thing unfinished for LONG ENOUGH.
This next year, I want to try to devote more time to doing things for myself that aren't fandom things. I'd like to reread Stormlight Archive before #5 comes out in December, play more video games, and do more painting. I would like to establish a better habit of making and eating food. I want to play board games a little more often.
Still, the muse can be fickle, and as you probably know by now, I am very good at chasing my inspiration!!

“I judge you innocent,” proclaims E’Rah, judge of the underworld and sister of Lord Thousand.
“Awaken, dreamer.”
Your head spins. The sound of the rain pounding on the dome crescendos. The jurors applaud alongside E’Rah, a mocking grin on her face. It’s too much. Far too much. You screw your eyes
shut.
When you open them, you find yourself in the abandoned castle’s study. The tapestry has been eaten away by moths. The book is tattered and dotted with mold. Cobwebs line the once pristine
study. A beam of sunlight creeps in through the windows.
Distantly, you hear the sounds of your crew calling your name. Their pounding footsteps resound against the stone steps of the tower.
You lay back down on the cold floor, gazing at the flowers growing through the ceiling.
That was enough of an adventure.

📚🗓 Mid-Year Freakout Tag 2023 🗓📚

How many books have you read so far?
69 including comics & graphic novels (nice)
What genres have you read?
Mostly fantasy and sci fi, but also a bit of historical fiction.
Best book you’ve read so far in 2023?
The Tyrant Baru Cormorant by Seth Dickinson! The first two books in the series were dubious, but things really came together for me in this one and I'm so excited for the conclusion. Also Baru is the character ever.
Best sequel you’ve read so far in 2023?
Nona the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir; it really recontextualizes the first two books and is therefore the best at being a sequel.
New release you haven’t read yet, but want to
Titanium Noir by Nick Harkaway (saw it at a festival), Translation State by Ann Leckie (I really liked her other books), and also New Suns 2 (I read New Suns last year and it had some really good stories!)
Most anticipated release for the second half of the year
Alecto the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir! After reading Nona I need to know.
Biggest disappointment
It's a tie between The Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson (boring and somehow shallow-feeling worldbuilding, and managed not to get me very invested in the characters even with over 1000 pages?), Dune by Frank Herbert (all the worst parts of 60s sci fi), La passeuse de mots by Jennifer and Alric Twice (all the worst parts of 2000s YA fantasy), or Der Dunkle Schwarm by Marie Grasshoff (somehow uninteresting despite what could be a very compelling world). I can't choose between any of these because none of them really got under my skin, they were just meh in ways I wasn't expecting them to be.
Biggest surprise
The Well by Jake Wyatt; I convinced myself it was going to be mediocre despite the awesome cover, but it's actually my favourite graphic novel of the year so far! The art is gorgeous and the story is a fun spin on traditional quest narratives.
Book that made you cry
Small Game Hunting at the Local Coward Gun Club by Megan Gail Coles. This book reminded me why I don't read sad literary fiction, even though it was really good (highly recommend if you can tolerate it!)
Book that made you happy
A Pho Love Story by Loan Le; I really appreciated how the characters learned to live with their immigrant parents and also the romance was really sweet!
Most beautiful book cover of a book you’ve read so far this year
Either Even Though I Knew The End by C.L. Polk (I am a sucker for vintage anything) or Squire by Sara Alfageeh and Nadia Shammas (I am also a sucker for clouds)

What books do you need to read by the end of the year?
De Profundis, The Secret History, Lord of the Flies, The Origins of Political Order, and After the Victorians (I think I've given up on reading War and Peace, at least for the moment). Oh, and Alecto, when it comes out. (There are, as always, Too Many Books)

Time Travel Fix-It Fic
So a little while ago I made a post about foreshadowing in a couple of Powder's drawings, here's the link to it if you want to read it...

I mentioned a head cannon I had where Powder has clairvoyant esque abilities but wasn't fully aware of them, and ended up interpreting them in her art, hence why her drawings had so much foreshadowing in them.
Soooooo naturally I came up with an idea for a fic because I'm weak, and added it onto the long list of fics I need to write but haven't yet because I keep coming up with new ideas as I'm hashing out the details for current story concepts 😭😭😭
🤦 holy lord of procrastination, I'm beginning to understand how George R.R Martin feels now 😂😂😂
Okay so the premise of this story is basically a time travel fix it, but it's done differently because rather than characters returning to the past it's everything that happens in Arcane is just a really long and finely detailed premonition that Powder has.
The story progresses how it does in the show and then some with a brief summary of how (non-cannon) the events after S1 goes. So after Jinx fires the rocket, war breaks out between Zaun and Piltover which goes on for three years before the Void attacks Runeterra. Jinx, after years of fighting, sacrifices herself to close the gate that the Void creatures are coming out from as atonement for her past sins but the Void took so much life that civilisation is basically now gone.
At the moment Jinx dies she wakes up as Powder in her bunk at The Last Drop. She lies there trying to get her bearings, as she's being accosted with memories from the future and her memories from the last few days. The best way to describe how she feels is if two halves of herself are catching up with each other and comparing notes on what they've been up to whilst she sits there trying to follow along, she is left in this state of complete numbness for several days in which during this time her family are wondering why Powder is not talking or responding to anyone. She's expressionless, quiet, and operating on auto pilot (she's basically a living doll), which leaves them really worried about her because they can't get her to snap out of this state and Vi's really worried about what might have happened to make her little sister like this.
After awhile however she snaps out of it and has settled on having her older selfs personality, which is basically Jinx after she's managed to overcome a lot of her issues and found better coping mechanisms. When this happens she just breaks down crying, out of the sheer overwhelming emotions and realisation that she has a second chance to fix everything and make better choices.
She begins making plans on how to save everyone, whilst also hiding the fact that she has memories of a future that hasn't happened yet because she has first hand knowledge of what happens when people believe she's crazy whilst also trying to convince Vi that she's okay because her doll state has left Vi even more protective of her and unwilling to let Powder out of her sight.
Some things to keep in mind:
She's seen everything in the future, including other people's stories. Her premonition works in the same way as if she were actually watching the show.
She doesn't have the same insecurities as pre-premonition Powder because Jinx came to terms with a lot of these insecurities during the wars.
Piltover is still her enemy but she's going to fight them at a different angle then teen Jinx did and recognises that not all Pilties are greedy and immoral.
She doesn't know what to do about Silco, she recognises that he has the best plan (currently) to fight back against Piltover but she doesn't want history to repeat itself or for Zaun to go through a trial by fire like before.
She WILL do whatever it takes to save her family, all of her family.
And, she has retained knowledge of engineering, physics, and magic and will be utilising all of this going forward.
I want to avoid making her too OP, the aim is to make her use the knowledge she's gained whilst "growing up" but also keeping in mind that she will have limitations as she is physically still a child going through her awkward phase of childhood.

[it's munday!] 3. whose writing has impacted your writing style the most? (you can choose anyone! famous writer or not.)
QUESTIONS FOR MUNS. // always accepting!
Okay, I've got 3 famous writers and a fellow roleplayer to talk about here. The published authors I'm going to mention are Eoin Colfer, Chris Wooding, and Cornelia Funke, whose works (the Artemis Fowl series, Poison, and The Thief Lord respectively) I revisit AT LEAST once a year. I have been reading those novels over and over again for years now and though I haven't done any of my regular re-reads since I picked up RPing in May, I know when I go back through them there is no way I won't find myself going "Oh I 100% do this in my own writing thanks to repeated exposure to this work of art".
If I elaborated on this as much as I wanted to, it would turn into a novella on its own, but some of the big things I think I've picked up on or appreciated enough in their writing to aspire to in my own are:
♡ Eoin Colfer's Artemis Fowl books: platonic affection, snarky characters, a love of fairies and "worlds hidden/tucked away right in front of us".
♡ Chris Wooding's Poison: flowy writing, fun world building, characters with a sense of "everyone just says 'this is how it is' and never lifts a finger to change things", finding yourself on journeys you never wanted to be forced into... just an overall sense of whimsy and fun names + relatable existential crises regarding the nature of free will.
♡ Cornelia Funke's The Thief Lord: this is the first chapter book I read as a kid and the one that completely inspired my love of reading. From it I developed an appreciation for found family, family of choice, a sense that not everyone wants the same things out of life (childhood isn't the "best time of your life" for everyone, adulthood isn't the best time for everyone either), magic in a modern world, and kids taking on adventures that feel so much bigger than they really are.
And for the roleplayer shoutout, I have absolutely been impacted, influenced, and encouraged by @climatact - ESPECIALLY in smut-writing because prior to getting into RP I'd never written anything PG-13+ in my life. (It's so much fun, I'm just an awkward aro/ace prude IRL so it was an interesting gap to bridge. But I feel like I've graduated from the initial 'Baby Smut-Chan' status. XD)
