how might acotar5 start?
This post has spoilers for hofas!!!!!
The intention of this post is to talk about how SJM might connect hofas and acotar5 narratively. It is purely thinking about the logistics of the situation, not where the plot could go in the future.
I will have a follow-up post with discussion about why Az makes even more sense as the next MC, based on everything we learned in hofas that strengthens my rationale from acosf and hosab. I decided that Azriel as the main character and Azriel as the connection POV are too much for one post, and slightly separate (though obviously overlapping) arguments.
So let's go!
After the crossover in hosab/hofas, the narrative needs to take into account a few things:
We have readers who don't want to read 2000+ pages of urban fantasy and want to be able to stick to acotar and fully understand that series in itself
Readers who read both series and don't want a bunch of repetitive scenes
sjm needs to think about how to communicate the information that was learned in hosab/hofas, or at least the information that is vital for moving forward with the acotar plot, in acotar5 that accounts for both those perspectives.
So how does sjm manage all of those tasks?
Azriel's POV
Starting perhaps just before Bryce landed in Prythian, though it could potentially start right where acosf left off. Allow me to explain.
Azriel was preset for a majority of the crossover, but he wasn't with Bryce the entire time. This is important! Because he was in and out of the Hewn City, this gives us an opportunity to see what was happening outside of Bryce's perception. Azriel's pov means:
We could see how the IC reacted initially to Bryce's arrival.
We could see their decision-making process in terms of what to do with Bryce
We could see if they made use of the research that was being conducted on other worlds
Bryce goes straight from landing in Velaris at the end of hosab, to being in the Hewn City at the beginning of hofas. We could learn how they came to that decision to take her there. That's not super important, but possible with Az pov.
We could also get a moment away from Bryce where Az is thinking about his own emotional reactions to everything happening with Truthteller, perhaps getting better insight into why he is reacting the way he is when it is near Gwydion, and how he feels upon learning the information about the Asteri making the Illyrians, and the info about Ramiel, about Enalius. We learned a LOT that is relevant to Az, and have almost nothing in terms of his reaction to it.
We could also get a better idea of how this knowledge is changing the IC in real time, as they are grappling with the implications.
This also means that the information we learn via the info dump in hofas could be supplemented with what Rhys already knows, based on Merrill's research. It wouldn't just be a verbatim repetition of Silene's story, but a fuller picture that includes what the IC knows and further implications for Prythian.
We could also get more insight into the argument that occurs as a result of Nesta letting Bryce borrow the mask. It ended up being a huge source of friction, but right now, we have zero knowledge of what was actually said between the IC when they found out.
One of the most important points here is narrative: everything that we learned in hosab/hofas was from Bryce's point of view. The narration didn't have to do that. Instead, the omniscient narrator could have given us insight into Azriel and Nesta's feelings. However, sjm kept that relatively close to the chest. For example:
“What is it?” Nesta asked Bryce, motioning to her back. “How is a bit of writing on your skin … Made?” “I can’t answer the question until you tell me what the fuck Made means.”
SJM does not fill in the gaps for Bryce, for readers who have only read Crescent City. Someone coming from acotar obviously knows the importance of the tattoo being a Made object, but sjm isn't doing anything to help out CC-only readers, here. She is working from Bryce's perspective only, and Bryce has no idea. This is just one example of what Bryce's perspective read like; the entire thing is like this, Bryce trying to piece information together while the omniscient narrator chooses not to fill the reader in on what Bryce doesn't know. This means that, again, we have no idea how the IC and other acotar characters responded to these events, other than how Bryce can observe them responding.
Azriel is quite literally the perfect go-between between the CC and ACOTAR series, as he was both observing Bryce and working with the IC. That means that sjm has given space in the narrative to give us Azriel's pov without it being repetitive. By using Azriel's POV, we are also learning this information anew, filtered through his thoughts and his emotional responses. We get the information we need, but we get it from a Prythian perspective.
It's possible that sjm do an info dump at the beginning of acotar5, of course. Lots of things are possible - they aren't all likely. Perhaps sjm will take an easier route and have Az give a recap, but to whom? And why? Everyone who needs to know will already know, and so I don't see a need for him (or Nesta, or Rhys) to spend time in the book explaining the situation.
Could sjm start post-hofas events, and just assume that acotar readers have gotten on board with Crescent City? She could, but that would be pretty shitty of her to do, considering how many books in we are. The way I have read it, you could read Crescent City without having any knowledge of acotar, and be fine. She tells us what we need to know in hofas. Why not do that in acotar, so it could be treated as a separate entity?
It will be interesting to see what tactic she takes, either way!

2023 book post
I read 63 books this year (i do count short stories & novellas) and there were epic highs (everyone read the school for good mothers) and epic lows (y'all read this shit? for real?).
here are my top ten, in no particular order, followed by thoughts on the rest. it's so long lol okay let's get into it
top ten.
the school for good mothers by jessamine chan - a perfect commentary on the prison industrial complex and how poor, single, and mothers of color are treated set in a chilling near future. loved it. i read this book in june and think about it daily.
edinburgh by alexander chee - this book is a modern classic for good reason. gay tragedy lovers this book is for YOU. the prose is so beautiful, so dream like, that i couldn't stop reading. i read this book in one sitting, very nearly a year ago, and i was completely devastated by it.
in the woods by tana french - love this for: unreliable narrator who sucks but is compelling; prose about the woods and the 1980s mystery; cassie; a police procedure that starts off by being like 'crucially you must understand that the police lie.' i have a weakness for atmospheric books and this has that in spades.
homegoing by yaa gyasi - this book is SO good and the prose and character voices are excellent. it's extremely epic but somehow only 300 pages?!? each character only gets 1 chapter but gyasi does SO much with each chapter 😭 i read this in one day because i could not stop reading. i also read gyasi's other book, transcendent kingdom, which was also very good.
some desperate glory by emily tesh - this book is a mindfuck and is one of the few times i've seen [spoiler] done well. there are a lot of things this book talks about--imperialism; artificial intelligence; fascism; white supremacy and how it intersects with gender; queerness; eugenics. i posted about it early when i had only read like 49% and i was soooo wrong to do so. read this and just trust me.
x by davey davis - okay are you ready for this? X is queer/trans bdsm neo noir mystery set in a dystopian near future. it is dark, it is consuming, it is surprising, it is a book i turn over obsessively whenever i can't sleep. i need to reread and i only read it a few months ago.
baru cormorant series/the masquerade by seth dickinson - this is 3 books but let's count it as one book. much has been said about baru as a cringefail autistic marxist lesbian icon (affectionate) but what i really appreciate about these books, other than how fucking gay they are, is the specificity of the world building. i have a theory that modern readers are in search of detail (and cruelly denied by much of publishing rn). seth dickinson loves details. seth dickinson is going to take semi familiar narratives and tell them in a brand new way using details; math; hyper specific words. god i love it
poverty by america by matthew desmond - relatively short book, read it in a day. i also read desmond's first book, evicted, and it is also SO good but what's sexy about this book is that modern american society and esp. politicians frequently likes to be like 'oh no, poverty is so tragic but it can't be solved' and desmond is like 'watch me.' for people who enjoy reading andrea long chu take downs reviews and want concrete solutions for how to build a better world.
station eleven by emily st. john mandel - many people told me this was the best book they've ever read and i was like 'whatever. i'll get to it when i get to it.' DO NOT BE ME!! read this!! i wouldn't say this is a happy book but it was a beautiful book. i loved it. i cried for about 90 minutes afterwards. for art lovers, weird theatre kids, people unafraid of plague books, non linear timeline lovers, people who have been divorced.
piranesi by susanna clarke - okay i read this on my flight to frankfurt earlier this year and it totally bowled me over with how lovely it was and how emotional i got. just a beautiful, delicate, haunting, eerie book. for fans of mysteries, people who love oceans, gothic houses, people who earnestly believed magic was real as kids and hope it's real today, people who love academic drama they aren't involved in.
okay damn honorable mentions: in the dream house by carmen maria machado (SO good, maybe deserves my rec more than piranesi), normal people by sally rooney (mainly because it did make me insane), under the banner of heaven by jon krakauer (thorough, horrifying), honey & spice by bolu babalola (SO fun), sula by toni morrison (stunning!!), severance by ling ma (millennial alienation during a plague, amirite?), trust exercise by susan choi (who knows what really happened? you'll understand).
okay now the worst books i read this year, aka books i did not vibe with:
broken harbor & the trespasser by tana french; did not enjoy broken harbor due to the themes and did not enjoy the trespasser due to how cringefail the ending was. you can't depict ongoing harassment a woman of color is experiencing in her workplace, make her decide to leave after two years of this harassment, and then back track it in the last chapter? please. this is a problem tana french runs into a lot, but that is a different post
the witch elm by tana french; parts of this book were absolutely delicious. but a lot of it felt very tedious and in need of a stern editor. so many books these days need more thorough editing and the result is that a potentially amazing book is just like, okay. i understand the power fantasy that this book is designed to be, but i'm not the right audience for it (disabled). also, generally i need a character to root for.
amateur by thomas page mcbee; SO sorry thomas. i didn't vibe with this book mainly because i don't think i'm the target audience for it. i'm not cis and i'm not straight?? i also am not interested in narratives about trans men wanting to prove their masculinity by taking up a violent sport. i think this tension is addressed in the book but it wasn't addressed to my satisfaction. violence is often all the world gives to men as a source of power and thus serves as a solace for everything patriarchy takes from them, so i suppose i understand wanting to be able to get a piece of that...logically that makes sense. but also. why.
the late americans by brandon taylor; the thing is, i fucking love real life by brandon taylor and i enjoy brandon's criticism and read his substack (although i disagree with almost every aesthetic opinion he has). so possibly my expectations were too high, but i read this and i guess i was just...wanted to know what the point is. gay people suffering in the midwest? as a genre, it slaps. as a book, i feel frustrated. it felt loose, pointless, in great need of editing. brandon talks about this book by talking about the importance of moral fiction, and this book lacks moral urgency for many of its stories. i've read a lot of moral fiction and this isn't it? anyway I read this in July and looking back all I remember is Seamus' journey and the way brandon dragged workshopping.
the angel of the crows by katherine addison; look. if you're going to write sherlock wingfic, put it on ao3. if you're going to file off the serial numbers, please work harder so i can't tell what it originally was. and absolutely nix the author's note saying it was sherlock fanfic, because that makes me very unhappy! personally!
99% mine by sally thorne; classic second book syndrome. except the third one is also not very good. too bad!
touched out by amanda montei; okay obligatory disclaimer that i'm not a mother or parent but rather an adult who loves my friends' kids! this book really frustrated me and i think i would have enjoyed it considerably more if it was all cultural criticism instead of a memoir (other than the dworkin parts????). a memoir is an art form, a set narrative, but criticizing it feels weird because i am criticizing the author's life decisions as presented to me, in a flattened context, in a controlled narrative. if the memoir parts were instead part of a fictional book i would not hold back lol. this book is marketed as the most important work of feminist scholarship in the last 30 years and...it ain't. i also felt the focus was incredibly narrow. while montei does attempt to cite a broad range of theorists i just kept finding myself wondering, what about people from other cultures? what about disabled mothers? what about queer mothers or parents? what about this? WHERE'S YOUR RESEARCH? WHERE ARE YOUR INTERVIEWS? there is a specific kind of feminism where white women act like their specific experience is the pinnacle of all suffering and tbh it isn't. this book reminded me of that very strongly. like, if you're telling me you won't have an epidural because it was invented by a man then you are not a useful person to engage with, thanks.
books that would have been amazing if not for that one part
he who drowned the world by shelley parker chan - man i have mixed thoughts on this book. look away my beloved swbts mutuals. okay the epic highs (ouyang & zhu!! ma!!) were set off by baoxiang lmao. i'm mainly interested in queer masculinity and femininity and a femme straight guy is like. well, good for him, but i don't really care? bring me back to my loveds zhu and ouyang. but my main gripe...tbh i think baoxiang is a hugely unreliable narrator that protests about a lot of things too much. being straight for one thing; not having a thing for esen is another. AND MORE COULD HAVE BEEN DONE WITH THIS? like i honestly wish the implied incest thing, which was brought up at least twice, was more present. taking a step back, if you're like well i'm straight and i don't have a thing for my dead brother i helped kill but i absolutely will be seducing the spitting image of him while i fuck my way to the top of the throne? that should make me insane. possibly it would have in a book that didn't already have ouyang. who can tell. so i wish SPC had leaned into that a lot more, i wish baoxiang hadn't felt like such a plot instrument, i wish there was more Ma, i wish spoilery completely unbelievable storyline was better, etc.
in memorial by alice winn - damn, this book. it was so good but it fell apart at the end. i respect winn's decision to not have it be perfectly easy after living through the untold horrors of the trenches of wwi but the idea of two brits running away to brazil to live out a life of colonial bliss because being gay wasn't explicitly illegal in brazil at a time is like. what? i guess. anyway, it was good, i just have some notes.
romantic comedy by curtis sittenfeld - here's the thing, i love curtis sittenfeld and i knew going in that this is a book by the author that wrote rodham but man, this is a book by the author that wrote rodham. this is the most Online book i've ever read (derogatory) and it's very specific in its liberal i'm an Online author on twitter type of deal. the point of the book is that Not Tina Fey falls for Male Taylor Swift on Not Saturday Night Live and it was good, it was fun, i wasn't expecting [spoiler] ummm but it worked. i had a good time.
this is very long, sorry.

This is something that’s occurred to me before, but I just realized it’s only come up in writing projects I haven’t uh... actually finished, let alone posted:
Vulpes Inculta Lies To Your Goddamn Face.
When you amble into Nipton, you can ask the furry with the chainsaw what happened to the good people. To paraphrase, he answers, “What good people? Everyone here was evil to the core and I did the world a service.“
More relevantly, he goes on to say that none of the townsfolk, not a single person, not a one, does anything to stop the Legion. He says they all sat back and waited passively for their turn to die, in the hopes that they might be the lucky survivor.
Okay, pause for a sec.
Have you ever met a human being?
Humans are deeply spiteful and contrary - not everyone, mostly not all the time, but it is something that comes up again and again in history. Rebellions, slaves fighting back, oppressed classes protesting and fighting for basic rights. We aren’t perfect, but we are capable of of saying “fuck the status quo”.
Now, importantly, this is Nipton’s first (and last) official interaction with the Legion. It sounds like a spy or two were sent in before “Mr. Fox” came by to bait the trap, but this was an independent town that notoriously served its own interests alone, refusing to side with or against the NCR, Powder Gangers, nor presumably Legion.
This is not a population used to the way Legion does things, indoctrinated former tribals or those born into its world, these were free contractors.
When the fuck have humans ever said “oh you’re going to kill all but like 2 of us? guess I’ll sit by and wait my turn!“ *
Not to mention this is the Wasteland. Nipton is an established town and what little you look up doesn’t mention raiders, but you have to pass by raider groups both directly before and after entering it, not to mention the Radscorpions and other wildlife threats. There had to at least be a few people in town who knew how to fight, because the town was still there by the time the Legion arrived.
With me so far?
Two places stand out to me. First, one of the houses in Nipton was a pain and a half for my noob self and I ended up having never looted it, because it is abrim with traps. There’s a Mr. Gutsy, a cage full of Radscorpions, and who knows what else.
There is a dead Legionnaire in this house.
The second place is the mobile homes sort of outside the town, to the right of where you come in. In fact, you can check them out without triggering Vulpes’ conversation. There’s several dead townsfolk out here, one of whom is holding an energy weapon. There is also an ash pile. If you inspect that ash pile?
Tumblr media
[ID: Screenshot from Fallout: New Vegas. It displays the contents of an ash pile, which are a Legion Recruit Armor and a Machete, a common weapon of the Legion. End ID.]
That is two places where you can find legitimate proof that someone, actively or passively, fought back against the fate of Nipton. You find no Legionnaire corpses in Town Hall if I recall, but they failed to clean up other locations, perhaps not even aware of their losses but I doubt it. Vulpes surely knows that the good people of Nipton fought back, even succeeding in killing his soldiers, and he lies directly to your face about it.
*Given what I’ve heard of the other Bethesda ““Fallouts”“ this might be a valid expectation in another game, but definitely not here.
EDIT: Made the asterisk more visible.

A Sonic and shadow introspecitive:
Time fore a less ship fueled anlaysis rant thing!
I had previous made a more shipping fueled post on these two hedgehogs (aka this post below):
But now it's time to get be rid of shipping, and just look at their relationship/dynamic as a whole
Now, these are my thoughts so say what you will. There are plenty other sources on how they're relationship works, and I can go on and on- but this is how I see it.
Ready? Just click below, it's a wild ride:
Sonic and shadow: Theme of respect.
While trying to figure out what made these to click so nicely together, while taking away all the extra fluff and banter- you get this theme of respect.
Starting with shadow (as per usual):
When they first met, shadow and sonic were immediately at odds eith one another, which shadow considering sonic as a "lower lifeform" a simple "pest" or thing in his way if you will. (Signified by his first appearance with sonic, literally being above him.)
But as time goes on between shadow's view of sonic eventually changes. Going from pest to an even challenge, an actual block in his way.
Sonic starts to surprise shadow, making him question himself and the hedgehog.
From the very beginning when sonic calls shadow "faker!" (Similar to "imposter") which is a question on shadow's identity, something he is very protective of (calling him "fake" is like adding salt in a wound that was already burning- aka it's an insult of sorts towards own, confusing identity, and makes him question things he doesn't want too.) . This causes shadow to do a little display of power, to show sonic "who's the real hedgehog here."
This is one of the first cracks in his apathetic cold-hearted killer facade and the most easily missed. Sonic was the first to add a question mark to title"Shadow the Ultimate lifeform." Which is what causes this rivalry in the first place. Sonic is the first change to the cycle of Shadow the Ultimate Lifeform, to Shadow the Hedgehog.
Here we eventually start to see these cracks more and more often.
Shadow, suprisingly or not, starts to enjoy this bantars and fights against sonic. You also start to see the slow,
but steady,
Pace in which the framing of where shadow stands and where sonic stands start to get closer together.
Not only do they grow closer in terms of elevation, they always grow closer in distance.
They go from enemies, to rivals, to freinds.
The shots between both sonic and shadow start to become closer, as the two gain an respect and appreciation for one another.
Its subtle, yet significant. It shows shadow's idea of who sonic is, from some pest to exterminate, a formidable foe and possible threat to the mission, to someone on equal grounds- someone worthy of respect.
This applies to sonic as well, of course to a lesser extreme.
Here we are at sonics point of veiw:
Sonics whole interaction with shadow starts of similarly to Shadow, except with a bit of a twist.
People normally see shadow's point of view view it comes to the framing, and disregard sonics.
Sonic, at first-sees shadow as a mysterious, threat. The fact is, sonic says with his own words, "the government has mistaken me for the likes of you", during their first interaction.
This tells me 2 things.
1. Sonic already sees shadow as no-good.
2. He's pissed. He has to deal with this nonsense beacuse of shadow. Getting chased down by a truck and getting captured is pretty annoying and frustrsting when your innocent . He even goes as far as to call him a faker, implying he thinks shadow's framing him.
The way the scene is shot also indicates sonics perception of the threat shadow poses.
He's above him, as sonic doesn't know what he's capable of. Since he got the government to chase him down and capture him, who knows what else the stranger can do?
There's even a point, though for a second, where sonic thought shadow was capable of the same super speed sonic has, if not faster. Of course, he later realises what "chaos control" is. (Aka travleing through time and space/telporting/time stopping ability.)
Sonic, sees shadow as a major threat. He even gets captured on purpose just to gather intel (he tells Amy this when she tries to free him, if I remebered correctly) on shadow.
As time goes on, sonic also starts to know more and more about shadow, who he is and what he's doing.
He becomes less and less of a threat, and someone he can talk, listen to and compete with.
(Notice how sonic goes from calling him "faker" to "Shadow"? That's respect upon someone. That "faker" thing was calling shadow a imposter of sorts. Calling him by name is respecting his identity and who he is. Not as the imposter, or a faker trying to present or frame sonic.)
Eventually, both shadow and sonic are one the same level, racing side by side. One not trying to outrun the other untill their conversation is complete. (Its that iconoc scene with sonics "what you see is what you get")
Now, translations can get icky across countries, but to put it swiftly-
The most important thing to me in this interaction has to be when shadow asks, "who are you, exactly?"
(Or something along the lines of that.)
See, this entire time both hedgehogs have been making assumptions about one or the other. Whether it's right or wrong.
This question is the true, final turning point in their relationship. Where shadow, is now asking the same question sonic was when he first met him.
"Who are you?"
For sonic, atleast at first- that question meant finding out what kind of opponent he's facing/dealing with.
But for shadow? This the biggest turning point in his view of sonic. The most respect he can give. It also shows shadow's own curiosity, something he didn't portray with anyone else.
Shadow has viewed sonic as a pest, block in the road, an opponent, but here? He is in sonic's position. He's asking the questions. He is the one, who wants to know more about sonic.
(Shadow didnt care about anyone, neither does he make the attempt to care. This is the first starting of where he actually starts to invest time into getting to really know someone down there on the earth, and not hide it behind some layered mask.)
Sonic's awsner, "I am what I am, a hedgehog who likes adventure. I'm Sonic, Sonic the hedgehog."
Or for those who don't read the Japanese english subtitles and play english dub-
"What you see is what you get, I'm sonic the hedgehog!"
Is one we all love.
It's also one that tells shadow, that this guy isn't all these things I've mention earlier.
To Shadow, Sonic is now Sonic. Just a guy, like him. They're at the same level. They're equals in this giant world of unfair.
If you've been wondering, where's the theme of respect?
This is it! This is respect! Sonic to Shadow, is Sonic the hedgehog. Shadow to Sonic I'm Shadow the hedgehog.
It's as simple as that really.
It's acknowledging one another for who and what they are and accepting that fact.
...
Later on in the story, everyone learns of shadow's backstory. We all know the whole exposition dialouge, and how everything came to be. (Whether sonic saw it or not? I don't remember.)
I don't think this changes anything in their relationship. At this point, that level of respect can't go away.
They face the biolizard together, and the superform together. You can't do that with someone who distrust, or with someone you hate.
During the entire battle against the biolizard, they're checking up on eachother and making sure one or the other is okay.
At the end? Shadow dies and sonic greives.
Alongside rouge of course, who is in a bit of disbelief. The only proof he has to show her is a golden bracelet shadow wears around his wrist and ankles.
The utmost, and I mean the MOST respect I have seen in the sonic franchise in a very long time is the scene where sonic says:
"He was what he was..a brave and heroic hedgehog, who gave his life to this planet. Shadow the hedgehog."
Not rival, not threat, not some expectation fueled title like " the ultimate lifeform", not some creature, or science lab project (I'm looking at you rouge- girl had to correct herself), not a villan-
But a brave, and a heroic hedgehog.
He is literally the only one, in a very, very long time- to have ever said such sweet, genuine thing about a guy he basically just met.
Not only was this a way comfort Rouge in her own grievance and denial, but to comfort himself as well.
....
When sonic was alone, you could see him muttering about shadow. Saying things like "created the ultimate lifeform."
Though this can interpreted. What ever it is, we can tell that he is thinking of shadow.
To me? I believe it's simply him fully taking in what has happened a long this journey, this adventure. Who shadow is, and what he came to be. Who he was before, and what he is to sonic now.
I've come to think of this as him fully processing and relaying the new and old information of shadow the hedgehog. Gaining a higher level of respect, and understanding of Shadow.
I think, in the end- The "Sayanora, Shadow the hedgehog" is a wonderfully end to that thought process.
It's a farewell, one of which you will never see someone again. Then, to add "Shadow the hedgehog", a respectful signature on both Shadow as their own being, self and identity as a whole.
To me, Sonic is saying " I know will never see you again, but for the time the we've shared, I'm glad to have met you, Shadow the hedgehog."
And he moves on in life. Sonic isn't one to let these things drag him down for to long. He grieves, he reminces, thinks and moves on.
It's bittersweet, and a very perfect end to the tale that is Sa2 as well as sonic and shadow.
...
Bit of a bonus:
(Just stuff that didn't fit)
The ironically, Sonic is the one telling Rouge who Shadow is. Rouge, despite getting to know shadow for who he is (mostly) first, has doubt in shadow- while sonic does not. It's an intresting thing- (I failed to pick up on this earlier actually! )
ROUGE EVEN STARTS WITH THE WHOLE "CREATED BY" LIKE OHMYGOD- DISREPESCT UPON THEE!! Though I get it, she was doubting and trying to understand the information recently given to her, so it makes sense. BUT I CANT BELIEVE SONIC IS THE ONE WHO HAD TO TELL HER-
Sonic is also the only one who is actively thinking of shadow. (Everyone is off grieving, or thinking of something else, or you're Amy and seem blissfully ignorant.)
This game is literally the only game I have seen in awhile where sonic and shadow have a genuine handshake. (Really Sega? We've come this far and not a single handshake? But sureee we can have the two fistfight eachother to the death.)
Scratch that, the only game I ever seen where shadow and sonic are actively worried for eachother, and eachothers safety.
The two even switch their titles at some point! Sonic gives shadow his "the hedgehog" and shadow (might be scrapped or not idk) gives sonic his "the ultimate lifeform" even adds a little, "the true" to it.
I'm not elaborating on other games, sa2 gets shadow character right the first time. It's literally his debut.
The reason for that? Is beacuse their relationship across games tend to fluctuate from enemies, rivals, freinds then to friendly rivals, rivals, and just flat out enemies and strangers. I'm sticking with this one game, as it's topinion i've seen sonic and shadow really genuinely interact in my oppion. Though I may be wrong.
This is all in one go btw, I'm not editing much or anything. If there's grammatical mistakes? Oh well! Too bad!
According to the sonic Twitter takeover, apprently sonic had tried to save shadow when he was falling , effectively putting himself in danger, just to save his fallen freind. I find this a strangley sonic thing to do. To help someone that is in need of saving, even at such a high risk. The fact Shadow deeply appreciates this, is also very neat.
Some people see the two as separated as oil and water- in truth they act more like how the sun and moon act. The sun a moon, never really seen in the same place, but when ever they are an eclipse can happen. It's rare, but these two definitely can work things out and can make a great duo when things are done right. Same goes with Rouge and knuckles. (One kicks on hits, a cool combo.)

6. Red Velvet Cake with Cream Cheese Frosting
Tumblr media
Hello, Every Birdie. Today we are going to be doing a recipe that made me have anxiety, a Red Velvet Cake, with Cream Cheese Frosting. Cream cheese frosting is one of the hardest frostings ever. At least in my opinion. I am always fighting it, and it always ends up winning. This time is no exception. But at least it tasted good.
Tumblr media
We are once again going to be following a Betty Crocker recipe, for the cake. And for the frosting, we are going to be using Baker’s Brigade’s “The Perfect Crusting Cream Cheese Frosting.” When I talk about the cream cheese frosting and it not working, I am not saying that the recipe was at fault. And neither am I. The one at fault is a thing called “humidity.” The humidity for that day was extremely high and trying to decorate a cake in a kitchen that doesn’t have AC can be a bit challenging but in the end, it turned out really well. And the frosting was not to sweet, so that was a plus.
Tumblr media
For the filling, we are going to be using a pineapple filling from “My Cake School.”
Now onto the cake making itself. The recipe and the measurements for both the frosting and the cake will be in the description down below.
Tumblr media
For the cake recipe, you are going to need
Flour
Sugar
Baking cocoa
Baking powder (I ran out of baking powder at the last second. And I was able to find a quick substitute. For each teaspoon of baking powder, you want ¼ teaspoon of baking soda and ½ teaspoon of vinegar. My mom taught me that when you are doubling or tripling a measurement you just take your base measurement and do it the number of times you are doubling it. So for this recipe, you need 1 tablespoon of baking powder. There are 3 teaspoons in a tablespoon. So you are going to measure out the baking soda and vinegar 3 times. Also, you don’t want to combine the 2. Put the Vinegar in with the wet ingredients, and put the baking soda in with the dry ingredients. Unless you want to see a volcano and have your kitchen smell like vinegar for the rest of the day. )
Salt
Vegetable oil
Buttermilk (a cup of milk + tablespoon of vinegar or lime/lemon Juice)
1 Bottle (1 oz) of red food coloring ( I had forgotten red food coloring when we went to the store. But I knew that we had Grenadine in the fridge. So I used 1 oz of that.
Eggs
Preheat your oven to 350℉. And grease your pans. For this recipe, I am using 3- 9 inch pans.
The baking of the cake is not that hard. Mix together your oil and sugar. Add in your eggs one at a time. This is where I added my Grenadine.
Then you are going to add in the dry ingredients, flour, cocoa, baking powder (or soda if you going with the recipe that I am providing), and salt. In small increments alongside the milk. Starting and ending with the dry ingredients.
Beat everything together until it is almost combined. Then with a spatula, you are going to mix it by hand. Make sure that you have all of the flour mixed in.
Tumblr media
Evenly distribute your cake batter. You can do this in many different ways. YOu can grab an ice cream scoop and count out how many scoops for each. Or you can get your scale out and measure it out that way. Either way is perfectly fine and they both work equally well.
Bake the cakes for 25 to 35 minutes. DO not rotate these cakes. If you open the door and change the location of your cakes, you may end up with an uneven cake. Let your oven do its job.
Once the cake is out of the oven, you are going to let it cool down in the pan for about 30 minutes.
As it is cooling down in the pan we can move on to making the frosting.  And the link to the frosting will be down in the description below.
Tumblr media
For this recipe, you will need:
Butter, Softened (at room temp. For about 30 minutes)
Cream Cheese softened
Shortening
Vanilla extract
Confectioner’s sugar
Salt
For this recipe, you are going to want to start off by creaming together the butter, and cream cheese, and shortening for about a minute on medium speed. Just until it is creamy.
This step is crucial. You are going to add in the rest of the ingredients slowly. Until they are combined. And then you are going to beat them for 4-6 minutes. Yes this seems like a long time. But trust me, it works. Again the problem I had with this, was not the frosting recipe. It was the humidity that was in my kitchen. This recipe tasted really REALLY good.
I put the frosting in the fridge. Until I was going to use it again.
After 30 minutes was up. I carefully removed the cakes from their pans and let them cook for another 30 minutes. When that time was up. I wrapped them in plastic wrap and put them in the freezer so that they would be cool when I decorated them.
Tumblr media
This was the first time that I made a cake ahead of time. I knew that I wasn’t going to have much time to bake and decorate the cakes the day before my parent's anniversary. And I knew that I couldn’t make it two days before their anniversary because it was the 4th. I looked at it and researched the heck out of how to freeze cakes and cool frostings. I knew that I had to make this cake on the 3rd. Because that was the only time I had.
I was determined that I was going to decorate it on the 5th.
On the 5th I made my pineapple filling that was going to go in the middle of the cake. I loved the flavors of this cake. I understand that not everyone likes them but for our Lauo-themed party, it was perfect.
Tumblr media
This is such a simple recipe. It comes from a website called “My Cake School.” But so good.
You will need:
Crushed pineapple
Granulated sugar
Cornstarch
Combine all 3 of these ingredients in a saucepan and cook over medium heat.
Tumblr media
Once the mixture begins to boil, stir constantly until it starts to thicken. This takes about 1 to 2 minutes.
Before you put it on your cake, you have to cool it completley. Feel free to stick it in your fridge to help you cool it.
Once you have your filling cooled. You can crumb coat your cake. This is a light frosting layer that usually catches all of your crumbs. I filled my cake with my filling and frosting. And let it firm up in the fridge overnight.
The day of the 6t, was a very humid day and it was a battle. I ended up finishing the cake. It didn’t look how I thought it would. And I was afraid that it would have a strong vinegar flavor to it. But it did not.
Tumblr media
While serving the cake, my mom said that it was one of the best cakes I had ever made. This one comment made the whole experience so worth it. I was so anxious about the taste and the look of it. But in the end, all that matters is if it tastes good or not. Because I don’t want to throw away food.
Sorry for this long post. I just really wanted to share with you my trials and errors in cake making. I wanted to give you all encouragement. That no matter what your baking skill is you should never give up. No person is going to master baking overnight. I was honestly so happy with this recipe. It took a lot of time, but I am glad that I didn’t do it all at once.
I hope that you like these recipe. Feel free to check out the description down below. See you in the next recipe. Thank you.

how to find literally any post on a blog in seconds (on desktop)
there are so many posts about ~tumblr is so broken, you can’t find any post on your own blog, it’s impossible, bluhrblub~
I am here to tell you otherwise! it is in fact INCREDIBLY easy to find a post on a blog if you’re on desktop/browser and you know what you’re doing:
url.tumblr.com/tagged/croissant will bring up EVERY post on the blog tagged with the specific and exact phrase #croissant. every single post, every single time. in chronological order starting with the most recent post. note: it will not find #croissants or that time you made the typo #croidnssants. for a tag with multiple words, it’s just /tagged/my-croissant and it will show you everything with the exact phrase #my croissant
url.tumblr.com/tagged/croissant/chrono will bring up EVERY post on the blog tagged with the exact phrase #croissant, but it will show them in reverse order with the oldest first
url.tumblr.com/search/croissant isn’t as perfect at finding everything, but it’s generally loads better than the search on mobile. it will find a good array of posts that have the word croissant in them somewhere. could be in the body of the post (op captioned it “look at my croissant”) or in the tags (#man I want a croissant). it won’t necessarily find EVERYTHING like /tagged/ does, but I find it’s still more reliable than search on mobile. you can sometimes even find posts by a specific user by searching their url. also, unlike whatever random assortment tumblr mobile pulls up, it will still show them in a more logically chronological order
url.tumblr.com/day/2020/11/05 will show you every post on the blog from november 5th, 2020, in case you’re taking a break from croissants to look for destiel election memes
url.tumblr.com/archive/ is search paradise. easily go to a particular month and see all posts as thumbnails! search by post type! search by tags but as thumbnails now
url.tumblr.com/archive/filter-by/audio will show you every audio post on your blog (you can also filter by other post types). sometimes a little imperfect if you’re looking for a video when the op embedded the video in a text post instead of posting as a video post, etc
url.tumblr.com/archive/tagged/croissant will show you EVERY post on the blog tagged with the specific and exact phrase #croissant, but it will show you them in the archive thumbnail view divided by months. very useful if you’re looking for a specific picture of a croissant that was reblogged 6 months ago and want to be able to scan for it quickly
url.tumblr.com/archive/filter-by/audio/tagged/croissant will show you every audio post tagged with the specific phrase #croissant (you can also filter by photo or text instead, because I don’t know why you have audio posts tagged croissant)
the tag system on desktop tumblr is GENUINELY amazing for searching within a specific blog!
caveat: this assumes a person HAS a desktop theme (or “custom theme”) enabled. a “custom theme” is url.tumblr.com, as opposed to tumblr.com/url. I’ve heard you have to opt-into the former now, when it used to be the default, so not everyone HAS a custom theme where you can use all those neat url tricks.
Tumblr media
if the person doesn’t have a “custom theme” enabled, you’re beholden to the search bar. still, I’ve found the search bar on tumblr.com/url is WAY more reliable than search on mobile. for starters, it tends to bring posts up in a sensible order, instead of dredging up random posts from 2013 before anything else
if you’re on mobile, I’m sorry. godspeed and good luck finding anything. (my one tip is that if you’re able to click ON a tag rather than go through the search bar, you’ll have better luck. if your mutual has recently reblogged a post tagged #croissant, you can click #croissant and it’ll bring up everything tagged #croissant just like /tagged/croissant. but if there’s no readily available tag to click on, you have to rely on the mobile search bar and its weird bizarre whims)

Sh anon once again. If it’s not already taken, I’ll go by 🦄 anon. You already know my account, but I’m still a little shy.
So, my thoughts on why I think Gwyn interacting with Mor and Rhys will be important. Something I’ve noticed is that Feyre & Cassian were neglected as children while Nesta & Azriel were abused as children. They share similarities and are close friends. Feyre is mated to Rhys and Nesta is mated to Cassian. I believe that Gwyn is Azriel’s mate and she will become friends with Rhys.
Gwyn and Rhys share similarities. Both won the Blood Rite, both had to be carried (which I’ve seen people shame Gwyn for) by their friend, both are Carynthian warriors. Rhys is a half breed and Gwyn is a quarter nymph and not “pure” High-Fae. And this one is more of a headcanon, but I think both of them are somewhat nerds given the researching for other worlds. (I could see them having a book club of sorts or like a science convention kinda thing. Fan-girling over each other’s theories and the thing Rhys built.) Even their trauma is similar. Both of their sisters were decapitated and saw the traumatic remains. And both of them are survivors of assault. (I was surprised by how much they have in common.)
I think Gwyn will be acquaintances with Mor, or at least somewhat friendly, since I believe Mor will help train the Valkyries and could be a love interest for Emerie. I think Cassian + Azriel + Mor will become a trio in ACOTAR5, which is something that really intrigues me. I would love to see this. Az is so fixated on three brothers + three sisters, but I think the real trio is him, Cass and Mor. I think (and hope) that Azriel & Mor will sit down, fully discuss everything, and have a good friendship again. I think this could happen towards the end of the first part of Az’s book and what will start a slow healing process for him; when he accepts it. But I don’t think Mor should be blamed or responsible, which I could see some people do. It’s not her fault and she doesn’t owe him anything in my opinion. I think deep down he knows (or has an inkling) that she’s queer. He goes after women he knows he can’t have to avoid getting hurt.
This link https://www.tumblr.com/azrielsbaby/650618221310984192/gentle-reminder-that-az-only-lets-rhys-see-the is one of the reasons why I believe we will see Gwyn interact with Rhys and Mor. As the OP said, “Az only lets Rhys see the full extent of his cold rage and darkness because only Rhys can match that same level of rage and darkness. Which means that Az feels the most comfortable to express his true self with Rhys without the fear of Rhys being scared or repulsed by him.”
And then this with Mor, “Mor was the only one to be able to console Az out of his dark emotions. Which means Az is the most comfortable with Mor when he's at his most vulnerable without the fear of her using that to hurt him or feel weak around her. Rhys and Mor are the two people Az is the most comfortable to be vulnerable in two different aspects. And it warms my heart to think about when Az finally meets his mate and Rhys and Mor will completely love her because she'll love their friend wholly, for every part of him - just as they have and always will.”
When Gwyn was assaulted, she saw Azriel’s rage and darkness. She saw him slaughter those men without hesitation. And Azriel saw Gwyn at a very traumatic and vulnerable moment in her life, but he doesn’t see her as a victim. Doesn’t treat her any different. He sees the warrior in her. He does treat her differently in comparison to how he treats Mor and Elain. I know Elain hasn’t seen that rage and darkness and I don’t know if Mor has seen it to that extent.
I feel like when Azriel does develop healthy, romantic feelings for Gwyn and when the mating bond snaps, Rhys & Mor will be happy to see that Az has someone that loves him wholly. Gwyn and Mor are similar to each other, or at least to me. I think Az needs someone that’s a little like Mor, but doesn’t have to walk on eggshells around him. I understand why she does. It’s not her fault. I want Mor to tease Azriel and encourage him with Gwyn, have lunches together, and just hangout and talk. I want their friendship to be like it was in ACOMAF. (ps, I wasn’t in the fandom then. I joined the fandom very late.) I’ve seen some theories where people think Rhys either knows or suspects that Gwyn is his mate. I don’t know if it’s true, but I just wanted to add that.
I hope their friendship/relationship is healthy and respectful. It isn’t Gwyn’s job to fix Azriel. Help him and offer support? Sure, but I don’t want him to become reliant on her. Does that make sense? If Gwyn and Azriel do end up together, I think it won’t happen until the middle of the book or towards the end. Which I’m fine with as long as he gets his shit together.
I feel like this was all over the place, but I had a lot to say! I’m sorry for the long post!💜 I might have more thoughts to add on for later, but my mind is a little jumbled right now!😂
ps, on what you said: “My thoughts re: acotar5 are that it starts just before Bryce lands in Prythian, following Azriel's perspective.”
I could definitely see Azriel’s book starting off like this. It makes sense. Especially since it was switched from nine months to instead three months.
(I am tagging op just so they know their post was mentioned) @azrielsbaby :)
When you list it out like that, yeah, Rhys and Gwyn have a TON in common. So much. And in acosf when Rhys tells Nesta to be nice to Gwyn, it was kind-of interesting that he singled Gwyn out, when he knows that Nesta is around all the priestesses. (It actually annoyed me when he did that because he is constantly up Nesta's ass, but that is beside the point. It's still interesting that he made a point to be protective of Gwyn.)
I just finished rereading acosf and Nesta teases Gwyn about memorizing things even if it wasn't her job. So I totally see the interest in the history of their world being a common interest between Gwyn and Rhys, not just because of the immediate plot needs, but Gwyn at least seems to enjoy that type of work.
I think Cassian + Azriel + Mor will become a trio in ACOTAR5, which is something that really intrigues me.
I am so interested in this because they seemed so tightly-knit in acomaf and then her rearranging of the plot to accommodate the following books really blew holes in their relationships. I miss the acomaf-era IC so much. I have had that thought as well, that the trio is actually Mor/Cassian/Az, because those three are on more equal footing with one another than they are with Rhys. Rhys will always be the High Lord, the one with all the power, the one they defer to. Cassian, Az, and Mor consider each other siblings, after all.
I just really want their dynamic specifically to be addressed, because I am so, so tired of reading homophobic and misogynistic takes from the fandom about what Mor owes Azriel, while they also try to claim feminism by saying Elain doesn't owe Lucien. Which the fuck is it??? Anyway, that's another side rant of mine haha. I want people to stop saying the Mor is leading Az on because she's literally just existing and he reads into it. And I want people to stop thinking Cassian was in love with Mor when you can clearly see in acosf that he thinks so, so highly of her but has no regrets as far as them never becoming romantic.
I think your connection between Az, Gwyn, and Mor is intriguing. There are definitely plot things connecting them, with the Valkyries and Illyrians training, Az needing to resolve his feelings towards Mor, and Mor working with the Valkyries (and probably starting something with Emerie). I think Mor could probably have some words of wisdom for Gwyn about how to proceed.
Perhaps Mor is the person who can recognize Azriel's feelings for what they are. She has been on the receiving end of his feelings for centuries, has seen how it impacts him, and I think she would recognize the difference in how he acts around Gwyn, compared to how he has acted around Mor and Elain.
I know I keep making jokes about how Az doesn't recognize that he has a mating bond and thinks it's indigestion, and so... maybe he needs to hear it from someone else. Not necessarily Gwyn, but from someone who knows him better than almost anyone else, and who knows what it looks like when he has developed an unhealthy attachment. I think that right now, Azriel is too jealous of Cassian and Rhys to hear it from either of them. But I think that Mor has experienced a different side of Az and so her insight would be more meaningful.
I prefer Mor and Az having this kind of conversation that focuses on someone else, that helps him move on without forcing Mor to disclose information about herself that she isn't ready to yet.
I also think he knows she is queer, and if he doesn't then I swear to the Cauldron, Sarah. The rant posts will be endless.
🦄 anon, I think we might be on to something!

2023 review
an extremely long post re: thoughts on this year
2023 was an extremely weird and fun year of a lot of personal growth! Late last year I had to take leave from work due to some health issues originating from burn out, and going into this year I was extremely nervous about returning to work. I was also determined to do more events and activities this year, which was my ~covid resolution~. And this year turned out to be way different from anything I could have imagined! Not only was returning to work successful, I could quickly tell that the time I took off was instrumental to my health going forward. The skills and perspective shift I practiced and worked on quickly proved themselves to be really important and I felt much better in just about every situation with them on board. I don't want to pretend that this year wasn't difficult--it was, it was stressful and full of a lot of hard work and uncertainty because I did a lot of stuff I had never done before, and tried a lot of new things, and also tried to make some decisions regarding my future. But all of that growth led to some really good things, which I wanted to document.
Good things:
got my driver's license
started doing yoga, which has been great for stress relief. now at the point where I have started to do it independently instead of relying on a class
got back into knitting and knit my first sweater!
saw several shows this year! and I went to a lot of them with friends
befriended some people at work! I always find it challenging to make the leap from work-friend to friend, but turns out going to concerts with people makes that happen. This is also nice bc a lot of my local friends have moved away due to cost of living
made a lot of training progress with Piper. Walking her is so much easier & enjoyable now, and I think our relationship has gotten even better. This has been a multi year project.
read 63 books this year, 13 more than last year. Audiobooks have been a life saver, and reading didn't feel like a chore the way it did at the end of last year.
returned to work successfully, started working on cool projects at work, and have gotten some recognition for it!
went to europe! on a sort of delayed honeymoon
wrote a couple more short stories and worked on original long term fiction a bunch
spent more time kayaking! and more time outside in general, hiking, walking piper, running, etc
got elected VP of the union and became a shop steward, which has been both very rewarding and very challenging
set clear financial goals that I am making progress towards
started being able to eat eggs again! not sure how this happened but it's been a life saver. thank you, immune system.
survived getting covid 😩
started adderall and oh my god....a game changer.
got better at setting boundaries
next year, I would like to work on:
becoming a morning person! I used to be a morning person and then when I got really depressed I lost that power. I know it's possible for me if I take the right steps. I've already started working on it because i'm a masochist
running. I hear it's so good for stress relief and it is so common in my field, plus it is a more attainable form of outside time than hiking (requires driving long distances, waiting for weekend, etc) or kayaking (seasonal, requires buying kayaks, waiting for weekend). my psych also told me that apparently exercise helps stabilize mood and adhd! two things i could def benefit from. i started running today and uhh we'll see how it goes lol. also, i don't drink, i don't smoke, i don't use substances of any kind, give me that fucking runner's high
driving more. driver's license or no, driving still scares me! i want to get to the point where I feel comfortable driving long distances alone, such as being able to take someone to the airport if the train isn't running
continuing big projects at work. honestly I am still considering law school and these projects will give me the chance to think deeply about whether complex litigation is for me.
writing. to be honest, while I still think about my writing projects almost daily, writing just isn't a priority right now. And that's fine. I want to give myself some space and time. i would not have been able to say this a year ago...
using my phone less! something I've noticed is that my phone sometimes makes me feel pretty agitated or i feel overwhelmed by notifications? and that I am happier and able to focus better if my phone is in the other room. for example, when i take a bath I typically put my phone in another room and then i am able to read for hours. I would like to work on this.
continuing creative hobbies. such as knitting, doing more wood working, learning how to sew, etc. brain feel good...
moving & creating a home. we are moving early in the new year, which I am stressed about, but I'm also really excited because it will be a great new space and the location is really, really good. i want to work on making sure this place is as cozy and happy as possible, and also set it up so we can host guests so loved ones can come visit more easily
continuing to build a wardrobe i am happy with! I think I have written before that a lot of my work clothes make me feel like I'm wearing drag, and I'd like to fix that and also continue to knit myself customized pieces I love. like, a sweater vest to wear with a white button down, etc. gender wise i am just vibing but I like menswear more and I would like to continue exploring that
this year I have spent more time talking with my dad and my partner about the future, and while I am still considering law school everyone, including me, is worried about my health w/r/t that, let alone financial shit. my thoughts on this are...I need to have a solid stress management infrastructure in place to be a happy person, regardless of what I do in the future. Knitting & yoga & taking Piper on very long walks daily, plus having stuff to look forward to (shows), has really helped me this year, so I would like to continue exploring that.
as far as work...well I would like it to dictate my life less. right now I'm working from home (office is being remodeled) and I feel like the most boring person alive because I am just. home all the time. I do find work novel because last year I was doing high stress complex litigation and absolutely falling apart over it and this year I'm so chill while doing the same sort of thing. mainly because I have spent so many hours building stress management processes, working on perfectionism, getting perspective, and i've recovered from burn out. game fucking changer! my workload is way too high really high right now, which I don't love, and I keep being put in extremely challenging situations! but that's okay.
anyway. I don't want to misrepresent my life and claim it was exclusively wins this year...there were some really difficult months. December in particular has been so hard. but I'm really happy that I tried so much new stuff this year and I'm excited for 2024.
sending love to y'all! <3

So I’ve been enjoying the Disney vs. DeSantis memes as much as anyone, but like. I do feel like a lot of people who had normal childhoods are missing some context to all this.
I was raised in the Bible Belt in a fairly fundie environment. My parents were reasonably cool about some things, compared to the rest of my family, but they certainly had their issues. But they did let me watch Disney movies, which turned out to be a point of major contention between them and my other relatives.
See, I think some people think this weird fight between Disney and fundies is new. It is very not new. I know that Disney’s attempts at inclusion in their media have been the source of a lot of mockery, but what a lot of people don’t understand is that as far as actual company policy goes, Disney has actually been an industry leader for queer rights. They’ve had policies assuring equal healthcare and partner benefits for queer employees since the early 90s.
I’m not sure how many people reading this right now remember the early 90s, but that was very much not industry standard. It was a big deal when Disney announced that non-married queer partners would be getting the same benefits as the married heterosexual ones.
Like — it went further than just saying that any unmarried partners would be eligible for spousal benefits. It straight-up said that non-same-sex partners would still need to be married to receive spousal benefits, but because same-sex partners couldn’t do that, proof that they lived together as an established couple would be enough.
In other words, it put long-term same-sex partners on a higher level than opposite-sex partners who just weren’t married yet. It put them on the exact same level as heterosexual married partners.
They weren’t the first company ever to do this, but they were super early. And they were certainly the first mainstream “family-friendly” company to do it.
Conservatives lost their damn minds.
Protests, boycotts, sermons, the whole nine yards. I can’t tell you how many books about the evils of Disney my grandmother tried to get my parents to read when I was a kid.
When we later moved to Florida, I realized just how many queer people work at Disney — because historically speaking, it’s been a company that has guaranteed them safety, non-discrimination, and equal rights. That’s when I became aware of their unofficial “Gay Days” and how Christians would show up from all over the country to protest them every year. Apparently my grandmother had been upset about these days for years, but my parents had just kind of ignored her.
Out of curiosity, I ended up reading one of the books my grandmother kept leaving at our house. And friends — it’s amazing how similar that (terrible, poorly written) rhetoric was to what people are saying these days. Disney hires gay pedophiles who want to abuse your children. Disney is trying to normalize Satanism in our beautiful, Christian America.
Just tons of conspiracy theories in there that ranged from “a few bad things happened that weren’t actually Disney’s fault, but they did happen” to “Pocahontas is an evil movie, not because it distorts history and misrepresents indigenous life, but because it might teach children respect for nature. Which, as we all know, would cause them all to become Wiccans who believe in climate change.”
Like — please, take it from someone who knows. This weird fight between fundies and Disney is not new. This is not Disney’s first (gay) rodeo. These people have always believed that Disney is full of evil gays who are trying to groom and sexually abuse children.
The main difference now is that these beliefs are becoming mainstream. It’s not just conservative pastors who are talking about this. It’s not just church groups showing up to boycott Gay Day. Disney is starting to (reluctantly) say the quiet part out loud, and so are the Republicans. Disney is publicly supporting queer rights and announcing company-supported queer events and the Republican Party is publicly calling them pedophiles and enacting politically driven revenge.
This is important, because while this fight has always been important in the history of queer rights, it is now being magnified. The precedent that a fight like this could set is staggering. For better or for worse, we live in a corporation-driven country. I don’t like it any more than you do, and I’m not about to defend most of Disney’s business practices. But we do live in a nation where rights are largely tied to corporate approval, and the fact that we might be entering an age where even the most powerful corporations in the country are being banned from speaking out in favor of rights for marginalized people… that’s genuinely scary.
Like… I’ll just ask you this. Where do you think we’d be now, in 2023, if Disney had been prevented from promising its employees equal benefits in 1994? That was almost thirty years ago, and look how far things have come. When I looked up news articles for this post from that era, even then journalists, activists, and fundie church leaders were all talking about how a company of Disney’s prominence throwing their weight behind this movement could lead to the normalization of equal protections in this country.
The idea of it scared and thrilled people in equal parts even then. It still scares and thrills them now.
I keep seeing people say “I need them both to lose!” and I get it, I do. Disney has for sure done a lot of shit over the years. But I am begging you as a queer exvangelical to understand that no. You need Disney to win. You need Disney to wipe the fucking floor with these people.
Right now, this isn’t just a fight between a giant corporation and Ron DeSantis. This is a fight about the right of corporations to support marginalized groups. It’s a fight that ensures that companies like Disney still can offer benefits that a discriminatory government does not provide. It ensures that businesses much smaller than Disney can support activism.
Hell, it ensures that you can support activism.
The fight between weird Christian conspiracy theorists and Disney is not new, because the fight to prevent any tiny victory for marginalized groups is not new. The fight against the normalization of othered groups is not new.
That’s what they’re most afraid of. That each incremental victory will start to make marginalized groups feel safer, that each incremental victory will start to turn the tide of public opinion, that each incremental victory will eventually lead to sweeping law reform.
They’re afraid that they won’t be able to legally discriminate against us anymore.
So guys! Please. This fight, while hilarious, is also so fucking important. I am begging you to understand how old this fight is. These people always play the long game. They did it with Roe and they’re doing it with Disney.
We have! To keep! Pushing back!

I’ve been thinking about fedorafreak.
More than that, I’ve been thinking about the kids’ session (Beta) vs what we know of the other sessions.
The Alpha session, as far as we can tell, only transported the core four (and Dad Crocker, and the rapbots). No one else on Earth B seemed to have been playing Sburb.
But in the Beta session, we see tons of meteors! Rose and Dave’s homes are under siege - though given where Rose lives, it does quickly confirm that the Cruxtruder to Meteor ratio is not 1:1.
But we see FedoraFreak talking about being transported to a strange place, laying down on a strange slab. Karkat -then CarcinoGeneticist, a mostly faceless antagonist beyond the screen- says “there’s nothing sadder than these null sessions”, implying an awareness of sessions beyond the Beta Kids’ and Trolls’. We see the damn GameBro magazine, before we even encounter a Sburb disc, reviewing it! Yeah, he didn’t play the game (the review would be quite different if not outright nonexistent), but he had the ability to do so. And so did countless others.
Compare and contrast the other sessions we know most about - the Alpha Kids, and the initial Trolls. Both of them post-Scratch, though we don’t know that at first for one of them.
Both of them lonely.
The Alpha kids, as far as we can tell, is a game of four players and four alone. The Trolls similarly, it’s heavily implied if not outright stated that they are the only players on Alternia, if not across the entire empire (if not, then the Empress might have made use of that.... hm). The Pre-Scratch Trolls, we just don’t have as much data on the matter.
Scratching seems to isolate a session - or perhaps more accurately, it generates a variant of that specific session, and that alone. The more I think about it, the more sense it makes. Alternia is a galactic goddamn empire, and Roxy can’t have been the only hacker of her caliber on her Earth, past or future form. It doesn’t make sense, in a vacuum, for them to be the only players in their timeline when the Beta Kids’ is implied to have so many more, including groups that didn’t self-generate and can’t complete the game. Amongst so many duds, there are almost certainly viable sessions - and the fact that there are duds at all, given how heavily Sburb and the comic itself leverage fate and destiny, is very interesting.
I think what it boils down to is: Homestuck is the story of this specific session. Hussie’s author commentary often touches on the importance of the concept of a narrative within the narrative itself, so it only makes more sense. There are uncountable other sessions out there, but Homestuck readers will never know them, because Homestuck isn’t about them.
Come to think of it, I wonder if that comes up in the video games? I’ve only played the first installment, so I really don’t know how it shakes out yet.

A Comprehensive List of Henry Cavill's Movies And TV Shows, And Whether I Personally Think They're Worth Watching
**Updated and current**
as requested by the oh so lovely @fangirleaconmigo
obviously take this list with a grain of salt, as im just one man, and i certainly have my biases. and even if something is in the "not worth it" section, if something about it intrigues you, feel free to totally ignore my advice! sometimes the best evenings come from watching reportedly terrible films, and one of my favorite Henry Cavill movies was summarily panned by critics and audiences alike. that being said, let's start with the stuff i didnt like.
NOT WORTH IT:
Red Riding Hood
----> Available for free on youtube, and yet still not worth your time. Poorly made, often unsettling, with bad music (in a musical of all things) and children forced into racist caricatures. Very funny if you want to watch Henry Cavill suck on a lollipop and get punched by a farting werewolf, however.
Vendetta (A.K.A. Laguna, A.K.A. Hotel Laguna)
----> Technically semi-competent... I suppose it's a mob movie? Also his film debut! But it's largely boring, and the entire film hinges on a sexual relationship between teenage Cavill and an older woman. Genuinely and deeply uncomfortable when she fondles his bare chest, and it's inescapable how much he LOOKS like a child in this film. If I never see a teen that young kiss an adult again, it'll be far too soon. *shivers in disgust*
Sand Castle
----> A war movie, and not a very good one. While I commend it for its attempts at an anti-war message (a very "why are we even over there" vibe), that doesn't make the movie less boring or more watchable. Those who love war movies didn't like it, and it wasn't anti-war enough to seduce the likes of me.
The Tudors (TV)
----> I think my mom summed it up perfectly when she said, in reference to her attempts to sit through season 1 and questions of why she bothered, "there was less on TV back then." (She never made it into season 2, by the way.) It's like the other historical dramas of it's ilk, so if you go crazy for those feel free to give it a shot, but even among its peers it's kind of not great. From the era where showtime really was putting an eye-rolling amount of sex in their shows, so get ready to be accused of watching soft-core porno on the family television like I was.
That being said, a lot of the sex scenes are Cavill's, so if that's your poison, this show'll keep you well fed.
Night Hunter (A.K.A. Nomis)
----> Apocalyptically terrible writing and editing. The performances the cast gave weren't bad, and the camera work itself looked plenty nice, but anything good to be said about the film is dragged down by the foundation itself being utterly rotted. Maybe good to put on to mock... when you aren't confused or bored to tears.
Hellraiser: Hellworld
----> It breaks my heart to say it, because I did find joy in this odd little film, but it's so genuinely bad that I would be a liar to place it anywhere else on the list. Campy and fun in places, but largely just boring, slow, confusing, and BAD. Not a real Hellraiser movie, not enough gore to appease horror fans, not meta enough to be meaningful while still being so meta it drags you out of the story. Genuinely the ending doesn't make sense.
If you're wildly in love with Henry Cavill, you'll love Mike. I love when he gets hooked in the chest and dies, the "sweet cheeks?" line is iconic, his zombie look is adorable. I'm getting a tattoo of the meat hook from this movie.
Do not watch it.
.
MAYBE? I GUESS? I'M NOT YOUR DAD, I CAN'T CONTROL YOU:
Immortals
----> Some technically interesting work here, some nice fight choreography, and a unique visual style to the film. And yet it has such a blandness of performance across the board for all its actors, and such a confused and thoroughly Christian approach to what was supposed to be a story about greek myth, I could never recommend it to anyone. (Since when does Zeus "not interfere" in the lives of humans???) Just enough style points to eek it's way out of the "no" pile.
Whatever Works
----> Whatever Works is a Woody Allen film. This is enough to make it a controversial choice on its own. Certainly one of his lower quality works as well. Henry Cavill as Randy was a delight, however, so give it a chance if you watch Woody Allen movies! Not as bad as I thought it would honestly be, and again Cavill was really good as Randy, but I can't really in good concious put it in the recommend section.
Tristan + Isolde (2006)
----> Billing itself as an alternative to Romeo and Juliet, I mostly found the film to be boring, and I thought James Franco was a bland, boring lead. Other performances in the film were good (especially Rufus Sewell as Marke and Sophia Myles as Isolde), the movie looked fine, it just... was boring. Watch if you're an absolute sucker for this kind of period drama, otherwise skip it.
I Capture the Castle
----> I was deeply unkind to this film when I watched it. I didn't exactly go into it expecting to have a good time or with much of an open mind, which potentially colored my experience. I... didn't have a good time watching it, to be frank. But perhaps if you go into it with a kinder outlook, you'd enjoy it more. A film about love's many forms, how it often hurts us, and it's utterly illogical nature. If you bother watching it, I hope it's kinder to you than it was to me. Perhaps you'll even agree to walk with it through the bluebells, who knows?
.
DEFINITELY WORTH IT:
Stardust
----> Not really "a Henry Cavill movie", as he's only in it for a few minutes, but the film is an exceedingly fun fantasy romp that's well worth your time. It's something of a cult classic for a reason.
Count of Monte Cristo
----> Excellent adaptation of an old classic, delightful watch. Cavill as Albert was wonderful, Jim Caviezel as Edmond was fantastic, and the ending made me genuinely gasp and sit on the edge of my seat. I didn't expect to love it, and yet I absolutely do!
Argylle
----> You don't get a whole lot of henry cavill for your buck, but it's a fun goofy spy film that you could easily watch with the family! Sam Rockwell is also there, as well as Bryce Dallas Howard, and theyre both fun to watch. Ignore the fact the special effects look like they spent $12 on them, and allow it to just be a fun time, and it'll treat you right!
The Cold Light of Day
----> Nothing mindblowing, and Sigourney Weaver + Bruce Willis give shamefully bad performances. And yet, Cavill is a charismatic lead, the chase sequences appropriately thrilling, and it's overall a perfectly servicable action movie. Grab some popcorn and make a movie night of it, IMO.
Blood Creek
----> Another perfectly servicable film. Not blowing any minds, but fun while it's on. Unfortunately, the plot relies heavily on Nazi mysticism (a personal pet peeve of mine), and some of the CGI leaves something to be desired. But still, at its heart it manages to be a very fun horror flick, if you're into cheap horror like me.
The Man From U.N.C.L.E.
----> This is... a flawed movie. And it's extremely hard to recommend when Armie Hammer is so unintentionally frightening in his role as Illya. And yet, the intro sequence is so FUN, Cavill as a thief is so delightful, I'd be remiss not to recommend it. Fun little spy romp!
Mission Impossible: Fallout
----> It is a Mission Impossible movie. Not much more to say, you either love them or hate them, but they know EXACTLY what they're doing, and they have it down to a science.
Enola Holmes
----> A great time all around! Go into it expecting it to skew for younger audiences, and you'll have an absolute blast. 13 year old me would kill to watch this movie. Millie Bobby Brown was great as Enola, and her relationship with Cavill's Sherlock genuinely tugged at my heart, because I am deep down a huge sap.
Enola Holmes 2
----> Ditto! Same as the first, just as worth your time!
Lynley Mysteries & Midsomer Murders (TV)
----> Lumping these two together, as they're both one-off episodes of long-running, competently made, british police procedurals. The episodes are definitely worth a watch, though I can't speak to either series as a whole.
The Witcher (TV)
----> Obviously divisive among long standing fans of the series, and not without its flaws (S2E2, jfc), but ultimately for all my bitching, I'm a TWN stan, and Henry Cavill's Geralt owns my heart. Also probably the reason you're reading this list, so I don't feel the need to expand all that much.
.
YES, THE DC MOVIES GET THEIR OWN HEADING:
-> *long, beleaguered sigh*
-> ok so, like. ok. how much do you like superhero movies? how much of your life are you willing to devote to a zack snyder production that spent half the time setting up plot threads for a large expanded universe that the execs very suddenly pulled the plug on? how little do you love yourself.
-> jokes aside there are redeeming qualities in these films, and if you really love the characters i'm certain you'll find value in some of them.
Man of Steel
----> Despite my very real and present complaints about odd tone, too much illogical lip service paid to the armed forces, a runtime that makes me want to start throwing punches (Just skip the first 20 minutes exactly. They do not matter. They do not add anything), a sterility to the script, and lack of care or acknowledgement given to civilian lives (something at the heart of superman and present in THE AVENGERS, so to do worse than the avengers is pretty egregious)... IT'S STILL a decently fun and entirely servicable (apologies to Mr. Cavill for how many times I use that word in reference to his films) superhero movie. I like Cavill's Clark Kent! I like his little bouncy curls, and I like how much he loves his momma. Superman is fun! He's my friend. MoS worth it, if you can find it in your heart to spare 2 and a half hours for it.
----> VERDICT: WORTH IT
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice: Ultimate Edition
----> Don't bother watching anything other than the Ultimate Edition. It's the only one you'll find half the time you're looking for the film, anyway. This film, to me, is the sink or swim moment. Tooth-grindingly long, and more of what you got in Man of Steel. It's-- ok, I didn't like the Christ allegory, but that's also blatantly Zack Snyder's entire thing wrt Superman, so I can't blame the movie for being exactly what it said it was. If you can get through this movie and enjoy it, then the rest of the DCEU films will be a breeze, and you're now officially A Fan. If this movie is a slog that makes you wanna die, do not bother with any other DCEU films, this is the point where they're officially Not Your Thing (said with affection, not derision). Despite all my complaints, Superman is my best friend and I think about this movie constantly. Wonder Woman is the best. Clark STILL loves his mom(yay!!!). The fact they decided to tackle doomsday+the death of superman as their plotline for this movie is so fascinating to me that I'm giving them points for sheer audacity.
----> VERDICT: WORTH IT, KIND OF, BUT FEEL FREE TO TURN IT OFF AND NEVER WATCH A DCEU MOVIE AGAIN
Justice League (Joss Whedon's Cut)
----> *rubbing my temples* Everything within me screams to tell you not to watch this abomination of a film, because of Joss Whedon's obvious and blatant racism and sexism, but it is admittedly much shorter and a bit easier to follow if you're not a fan of Snyder's style or you're not a big comic book person. Whedon made reshoot decisions that removed the black character Victor Stone, A.K.A. Cyborg, from prominence in the plot. He was arguably the(or at least a) main character in Snyder's version, and Whedon cut his scenes extensively, and then added extra scenes to make Batman the protagonist instead. Not to mention adding in scenes of a slightly sexual nature that Gal Gadot(Wonder Woman's actress) refused to film, which he then got a body double for and digitally added her face in post. BUT!!! But. I must admit. 2 and a half hours versus 4 and a half hours is an appealing cut-back in length, and some people find it difficult to follow Snyder's exposition-heavy style. Plus there are a few added scenes of Superman which are genuinely adorable, if very short. If you're a fanatic, watch both. If you just want to watch one version... Well, I would recommend Snyder's, but weigh the pros and cons for yourself.
----> VERDICT: WATCH IT IF YOU 1) LIKE DC FILMS BUT 2) AREN'T THAT INVESTED, AND 3) ARE LOOKING FOR SOMETHING SHORTER OR PERHAPS EASIER TO FOLLOW. IF NONE OF THOSE CONDITIONS APPLY, DON'T WATCH.
Justice League (Zack Snyder's Cut. Also knows as "Zack Snyder's Justice League")
----> Genuinely unforgivably long. Zack Snyder, I don't forgive you for the length of this movie. AND YET I personally had a total blast with it. Coming hot off the heels of Whedon's cut, seeing Cyborg more fully fleshed out was like a dream come true, and some of Whedon's trademark 'humor'(which these days I find grating) is thankfully lacking. I personally find it to be a better movie, a better showcase of the characters, and all around more fun, but I had also innoculated myself against the strain of long Zack Snyder superhero movies by doing marathons of his other DC films before diving into this one. Also the film has a lot of references to future plotlines which will never fully make sense, because they were sequel set-ups for movies that never got made. Those parts are... hard to sit through, whether because of confusion/boredom or the heartbreak of knowing you'll never get to see that movie which doesn't exist(depending on your emotional investment). For some reason this film is split up into like 5 or more different "chapters", and I theorize that you could watch one chapter a day like it's an episode of television if you need to not watch it all in one sitting, and you might get a better experience out of it that way. Superman is here and he's still my friend! He still loves his ma soooo much! There's a super fun scene with his heat vision!! Wonder Woman and Cyborg and The Flash and Aquaman are here!
----> VERDICT: THIS IS THE VERSION I RECOMMEND IF YOU'RE SOLD ON WATCHING THE JUSTICE LEAGUE, BUT I WOULDN'T BEGRUDGE YOU IF THE RUNTIME SCARED YOU AWAY. WEIGH THE PROS AND CONS BETWEEN THIS AND WHEDON'S CUT, AND WATCH WHAT WORKS FOR YOU. AND IF YOU DON'T LIKE DC MOVIES PLEASE DON'T MAKE YOURSELF WATCH THIS.
Zack Snyder's Justice League: Justice Is Gray
----> Literally just Zack Snyder's cut of the Justice League, but in black and white.
----> VERDICT: PLEASE DEAR GOD DON'T WATCH THIS IF YOU'VE ALREADY WATCHED THE OTHER ONE. IT ISN'T WORTH IT. DON'T SPEND FOUR HOURS OF YOUR PRECIOUS LIFE ON "THE SAME MOVIE BUT IT'S BLACK AND WHITE NOW"
.
CHEAT FILM:
I must admit that, despite saying I've watched "everything" Cavill's ever made, I've only seen clips of his performance for the following film.
In Goodbye, Mr. Chips, he only has a 5 minute apperance. It seems a good enough movie, I suppose, but I couldn't bring myself to sit through hours of TV movie for 5 minutes of Cavill, especially not when his scene has been politely uploaded to youtube. His scene was moving, despite the fact I experienced it completely disconnected from the rest of the film, so make of that what you will.

...phew! ok, that's everything, i think.
feel free to disagree on any of my placements. also feel free to watch night hunter and then come yell in my inbox about how it sucked, because i am constantly shouting into the ether about it and no one understands my pain.
i hope this is helpful for anyone interested in watching some hcav movies but not sure where to start... i suppose i am now some sort of authority on the matter, though i didnt intend to become one lmao.
im very excited for his upcoming roles, both in the romance The Rosie Project, and in the rumored Highlander film. not to mention an Enola Holmes sequel (!!!) and..... Argylle, which i will make myself watch because i am now committed. hopefully i can find some way to distract myself from his truly terrible hair... though i never would've started my marathon if i hadn't been disgusted by his haircut in Argylle, and then immediately wanted to see him as a spy with GOOD hair. so i suppose i have to thank it, which i will do by sitting through the whole movie. thank you and you're welcome, mr. cavill (EDIT: it turned out great 10/10, yay!)
if anyone likes this enough or cares, i can update it to include more henry cavill movies as they come out! <3
