Buddy Request: are you a Loki obsessed high fantasy lover?

I would really like to connect with fellow Loki fans who want to rant about/analyze Loki and Thor's psychology, family dynamics, Asgardian society, Jotunheim, magic/seiðr, and the Nine Realms. Ideas/thoughts that aren't canon-compliant with the MCU are more than welcome!

Let me set the scene:

For the past year and a half, I've been working on developing a longfic featuring a Thor 2011 Loki and an OC Sigyn. Honestly, I don't think that I'll get around to posting it anytime soon (there's still so much work to be done on it), but it's constantly on my mind. It's sort of a hybrid concept of the MCU, Norse Mythology, my own ideas, OCs, and magic systems. It has an epic scope with multiple arcs and characters from most of the Nine Realms. Do you like characters with wings? I got you covered. An imminent threat to the Nine Realms? Check. An in-depth analysis of Ásgarðr and Jǫtunheimr's history uncovered during Loki's identity crisis? A Jǫtunn OC? A Laufey that never wanted to lose their child? Check, check, and check.

I've found it hard to talk to people about all this because it involves a LOT of worldbuilding. Epic fantasy definitely isn't for everyone and this will not be a "light" read. Some non-fanfic stories that have inspired me along the way include the Roots of Chaos series by Samantha Shannon (The Priory of the Orange Tree and A Day of Fallen Night) and Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien. So if you like those types of stories, you might like the ideas I come up with.

If you relate to anything I've said, I also want to mention that I would love to hear about your ideas as well! If you feel trapped inside your own head and feel hesitant to "info-dump" on people, I am the person for you. And hey, maybe we can inspire each other :) Fanfiction is not about gatekeeping, and I have been unabashedly inspired by so many different takes on Loki that I've read along the way.

Before I go on this rant, I'd like to remind you all that Loki is now the best version of himself. I don't like the way there, I don't like what they did with the character, but it is what it is. So, I gotta ask,

What About Thor?

Loki sacrificed his entire life to sitting at the end of time. Wouldn't he be sad to know he'll never get a chance to see Thor, ever? Thor will never know he's alive, that he's the reason his timeline isn't spaghetti? And Loki will never get a chance to say goodbye.

Last time he saw Thor was this:

Is this where this relationship is left off? As opposed to what the show would have you believe, Thor is one of, if not the most significant relationship Loki has. And that's where you're abandoning it? You're not gonna give it a passing nod before Loki's going to spend the rest of his life alone?

So, to explain why I honestly think Loki does self-harm...

Look at Loki's attire in Thor 1...

And then look at The Warriors Three attire...(Images)

And Thor's...

In the scene where we see Loki confess about telling Odin, all of The Warriors Three are either wearing thin clothing or showing skin of some sort. It's also worth noting that they're sitting around a fire in the scene. So, the room that they're in is by no means cold, yet Loki is still completely covered from the neck down. All that viewers, and other supporting characters, are able to see is his head and his hands.

Now, if we compare Loki's attire to Thor's when he visits him at the S.H.I.E.L.D base, we can see that Loki is wearing several layers just like he was on Asgard when, base off of how other characters are dress, it's not necessary. While Thor is on Earth, we see him only really wear a jacket and/or flannel and short sleeve t-shirt for most if not the entire the time he's there. This causes me to speculate that Asgardians have higher body temperatures than humans since he clearly doesn't require several layers to stay warm. (Darcy is literally in the background wearing a skull cap and coat and possibly even a scarf, and Thor is out here in a t-shirt and flannel 🙄).

Keep in mind that Loki is also a Jotun, and the planet that they originate from is colder than the Antarctic. When we see him, Thor and The Warriors Three go to Jotunheim, Heimdall makes a comment that Loki isn't dress warmly enough. Clearly it isn't required for Loki wear much to stave off the cold. This detail most likely means that because of Loki's Jotun biology (and arguably his Asgardian biology), the cold doesn't bother him. Therefore, the amount of layers we see him wear in the movie, again, isn't necessary.

That begs the question...If Loki doesn't get cold, why does he dress the way that he does?

It's simple really, he's hiding something. It's not uncommon for people who self-harm to try and hide their scars from others. People also may self-harm for an assortment of reasons. Whether it be because they are depressed, anxious, seeking attention and/or possibly suicidal (and according to Thor 1, it can also be debated that Loki was/is suicidal as well). My entire blog really is just a series of repetitive in-depth analyses of the psychological problems Loki suffers from because of, really ALL of Asgard but specifically, Heimdall, The Warriors Three, Thor, Frigga and especially Odin. (My Loki Series Analysis summarizes a lot if not all of the main points I make on my blog). The Thor 1 movie just gives you a sneak peak/summary of what Loki has no doubt had to deal with for centuries. Between being talked over, ignored, underappreciated, neglected, misunderstood, isolated, outcast, gaslit and possibly physically abused (Odin's fist raise), coupled with being abducted and being raised to believe that the species he originated from are a race of horrible monsters, how much he struggles in the movie and in his overall life is understandable. Loki is painfully aware that he is different from other Asgardians and this bothers him. In reality, Loki understands that self-harming in not a normal thing for people to do and, based on the fact that he's hiding, he feels embarrassed that he does it. There could even be a fear factor included since he might not know how people would react if he were to tell them, or he may already know that the people around him won't take it very well if they care at all! As a result, Loki hides.

Yep, that's Balder. Got the mistletoe sticking out of his pretty chest and everything. This comic isn't dancing around the blame like the mythology does. Aguirre-Sacasa's just like, 'None of this Hoder did it nonsense. Loki's the murderer.' Which is a fair assessment.

I guess that's one way to speed up the equalizing death of Hoder. We got a mini series to make; no time to conceive a new son and wait for him to grow up. Just have Loki do it. It all comes back to him anyway.

“Darling you’ve been at it for almost 6 hours now and with no break…you need to walk, stretch, get some food…wait when was the last time you had a sip of water?”

“Don’t know Loki, too busy, too into it, i’m almost done, i just have to re-check everything and…and…and…”

“Ok enough of that” he physically pulls you away from your desk making your papers fall to the ground

“Ok i did not intend that but now you get my point! You look exhausted and it hurts me to see you like this…and you just don’t deserve this!”

“I don’t have a choice ok?! This is my final shot at a decent mark and my groupmates are kinda just shit!” You were beyond done at this point, just absolutely beyond your level of patience

“Love…” Loki goes away for a moment and comes back with a glass of water, handing it to you. “Drink up”

You look at the glass of water and grab it immediately, drink it all up in one go

“See?! Look how thirsty you were! Love you need a break”

You scoff and fall back onto the chair, accepting defeat

“Ok…fine…but only for 10 minutes”

“No 20!”

“Too long! 15?”

“15 is…alright” Loki agrees too.

He spend those 15 minutes praising you for all your hard work “my good girl is working so hard…” “what amazing work you’ve done my love…” “i’m so proud of you darling”

He massaged your shoulders and kissed the side of your neck and cheeks

He grabbed you a quick snack so that you had more energy once the break was over

Lastly he forced you out of your chair and onto the couch so that he could wrap his arms around you and into a warm embrace “I love you my darling…in all the nine realms…you’ve claimed my heart forever”

Leaning into his embrace you rested your head onto his chest “I love you too…my sweet boy, you care so much for me and I am so grateful…so damn lucky” You looked up, catching his gaze and pulling him into a loving kiss…

You continued to rest your head against his, accidentally falling asleep…which was Loki’s plan all along…don’t worry about the project though, he had scared the shit out of your other group mates to do their work and used magic to finish up on what you needed…anyone that dare hurts his sweet darling obviously will face some kind of consequence!

Before Loki was kidnapped to the TVA, he was just getting arrested for genocide. He was at his most villainous self.

(I'm gonna burn through this next point because that's not the point I'm trying to make, I'm just adding context, sorry in advance): The first thing the Loki series does is showing him a video to make him a sympathetic protagonist, and it seemed to work.

So essentially, their starting point is a Loki who is still semi a good guy but still isn't cooperative in the slightest. Not, you know, the guy who just sent an army of aliens to murder a bunch of people and conquer the earth. So, I have to question,

Why Is Loki Taken From Avengers, and Not Where We Left Off?

By the end of Thor: Ragnarok, Loki's arc is in a much different place to where it was in New York. He's a different person, while still being himself. Because we saw distinct sides of him, and he even did good.

But his arc was not done. He was clearly doing good for vanity reasons, rather than morality, to at least some extent.

Not to mention his Jötunn heritage that he was taught to hate from childhood.

There was still so much to do. So much to explore with this Loki. But...

There was no need for this. He could have easily survived (very easily, to the point where it's goofy). We've already seen Loki redeem himself, now, there's more. He's not perfect, he's not done. Why not pull Loki to the TVA without undoing his arc? Let's just keep going, the path isn't over.

(He would want to escape rather he was his NYC self or not. His motivation could still be "I just need to get out of here" -> "there's a real problem I need to fix". The series will be different, but not that different).

Which bring me to my next point: The TVA is the perfect starting point for the continuation of Loki's arc from Ragnarok.

Consider: Doing things for validation & admiration -> going to a place isolated from your life. This would also enhance the symbolism of Loki sitting alone. He wanted a throne for validation (vanity), and now he chose a throne no one will know exists, because he wants to help (morality).

In addition, there's no magic in the TVA. There was an opportunity to kick off a journey to self acceptance, to force him to look in the mirror until he likes what he sees.

The show starts with 2012 Loki, but wants 2017 Loki. And rightfully so, because his character wasn't finished. He had so much more to do. I wish Loki hadn't died, his series would be better for it.
