#like the show is already good at horror! so its easy to use that as a frame of reference

was looking at some wiki pages, and saw it noted that season one wouldve only had 2 episodes. and. that made me think about how, if THATS how one was presented, if those two had been given episodes on their own? as an object show, without any other context? i think thatd like. legitimately be extremely horrifying
(put under a readmore bc it IS a bit lengthy. notes are ALSO a bit lengthy bc i am talkative)
like, airy is already a terrible host, but hed be even LESS good at it than in the actual series. the plane in season one doesnt seem to even have the grass blades, so i imagine theres no trees anywhere, either (geographic details and weather, stuff along those lines, seem to have been hard to figure out, given that he seems excited to add the clouds, and likely wouldve added them already if hed already known how to make them), which, with the added realism to the characters, would probably be far more uncanny (assuming theres also a stinger showing one-two of the contestants Actual life). it doesnt stand out much in terms of object shows, of course, but if presented with the reality of how empty it is, and how odd it is compared to real environments? i think that it wouldnt seem Right
nobody would know why theyre there, and probably wouldnt want to be there. at the very least, airy had concepts and lines to tell the contestants in the series. judging by what he says in ep 17, though, they didnt get this. there is even less clarity. add to that that julien is likely Extremely Confused And Alarmed, the others would probably be more inclined to share that stress. there would be.. a Lot less clarity, and a lot more unease among the contestants. add to that, that based on what oscar says, airy kept almost accidentally killing them. without any reassurance that theyll be brought back
by the end of the first episode, nobody is dead, of course. but its unlikely that anyone is especially happy with the situation theyre in (even if airy brought up a prize, he wouldnt be reassuring, and there is far more risk than there was for the actual series’ contestants, so even a contestant who wants to compete would probably not feel especially safe). i cant imagine what a post credits scene would involve, but it probably wouldnt change much in terms of tone
the second episode would certainly start out normally. oscar would go home, cool. no new contestants are introduced, so airy starts the challenge. and then they all die. and the episode ends (there COULD be a post credits scene, but i dont imagine it could be reasurring)
and that would simply be the end of it.
#hfjone#hfjone spoilers#it wouldnt make a good SHOW of course but its like.#season one of one. the one we watch? is generally presented as how airy would WANT his show to be presented i think#which is why s1 has actual intro music and INTROS. and outro sequences where set music is played. and aftercredits scenes#and why s2 has  outros and such but they dont have much of a standard#and the only time the intro music is played? is when airy greets liam. because thats HIS idea!!#so as a whole season one is more based around airys ideal formatting for his show!!#and i think if that had been done for the Actual season one. it would have been .. very effective horror for sure i think#like. how already was horrifying on its own but had added alarming-ness due to being such an outlier#and something about the idea of such sudden played-straight finality? thatd. god.#i am a big fan of horror and something that tends to really Get to me in horror? is sudden Extremely bad events. not like jumpscares#but bad things happening unexpectedly and being portrayed actually realistically. so to me?? this just. man.#i think people also underestimate just how genuinely terrifying season 1 probably was. like i think ppl use the actual given s1 as a metric#but what we see is still FAR more polished than what the original contestants saw#and what the season actually wouldve been#like the show is already good at horror! so its easy to use that as a frame of reference#but the original season. probably wouldve been. far scarier#and its. man.#if i had the motivation to do so id MAKE this bc  a hypothetical season '0' is genuinely so interesting to think abt details for!#technically i could write it and have seen it written but like. its the object show format im rly trying to get at being important here#yknow??#but in the meantime. horror concepts#ask to tag

i rewatched Dune Part Two recently and one of the most striking shots for me was the one of the Fremen attacking the Sardaukar on wormback, while holding the Atreides flag.
Like, we just saw the Sardaukar forming up with their numerous flag bearers, even trying to maintain their flags raised after the nuclear detonation (in a shot that mirrored the famous "Raising the Flag in Iwo Jima" statue to me btw, nice nod to imperialism).
And then the Fremen arrive, but they're not bearing their colors, their flags, not fighting in their own names, instead it's the Atreides colors. The colors of their new, imperially appointed rulers. New pawns in the warfare between Great Houses, soldiers instead of freedom fighters. Urgh. Wish i could make gifsets.
Yeah yeah yeah it's horrifying!! You are watching a national liberation movement get successfully co-opted by a superpower and it's awful!
They did such a good job making it feel creepy and foreboding when the Atreides symbols and motifs start re-appearing in the last hour or so of the movie. The second Gurney shows up he immediately re-introduces the Atreides way of looking at the world, and it's disturbing how easily Paul falls back into thinking like that, seeing the planet and its people as tools to be used in an inter-imperial power play. (It's right after Gurney tells him about the family nukes that Paul has the signet ring out for the first time since the beginning of the second act and we're like OH NO.) This is before he drinks the Water of Life; he is already starting to think like a colonial duke again some time before he declares himself one.
After the opening montage where we see the piles of bodies being burnt, we don't see the stylized Atreides hawk symbol for most of the movie. The next time it appears is on a vault of nuclear weapons, which are never treated as anything but a curse. It's so important that Stilgar and Chani are with Paul and Gurney when they open the vault so we can see their horror at these weapons and the gleeful, casual way Gurney talks about them. Chani is also seeing an aspect of Paul that she hasn't really witnessed before--Paul, the Future of House Atreides--and she does not like it.
And then of course the whole ending battle is making the point over and over again with repeated imagery that Atreides and Harkonnens are exactly the fucking same. All the imagery from the initial Harkonnen attack on Arrakeen in Part One--which at least shows the Atreides as brave in the face of overwhelming odds--gets inverted into something that's supposed to make us shudder. That scene of Gurney hacking his way through the crowd of soldiers with someone carrying the Atreides flag behind him? Nightmarish.
All of this stuff is super important to what the movie is trying to say because it is very very easy for us to buy into the Atreides' propaganda about themselves being the good guys. If we're paying attention to what Chani tells us in the literal first 3 minutes of the first movie, we already know we should be viewing them with a bit of critical distance. And while I think there is plenty in the first movie to make us side-eye their noble image (Leto saying we will bring peace to Arrakis?? fucking yikes dude), it's easy to forget that because Leto generally seems like a good dude to the people close to him, and he dies tragically so we never get to see much of what kind of colonizer he would have become. And I think it's easy to start thinking well if only Leto the more reasonable parent had lived then things wouldn't have turned out this way.
But fucking desert power?? That was Leto's idea. This is Leto's dream being realized. The plan was always to use the Fremen as pawns in the power struggle between the Great Houses. Maybe not quite in the way that Paul does cause he definitely goes off with it, but the end result is just as much a product of Atreides imperialism as it is of Bene Gesserit religious colonialism. The Atreides aren't inherently any more noble or benevolent than the Harkonnens in their intentions, they just have better PR. But the end result is exactly the same: a pile of dead bodies being set on fire.

Akechi's taste in Literature
I've taken an interest in the books Akechi reads. Obviously from the first time you talk with him, you can already tell what he tends to: psychology, philosophy, and mythos. Also, I read at least a little bit from every text. One of my professors out there is proud of me. I hope. So: let's talk about it!
Tumblr media
Ok, but why care? Quick Introduction
No particular reason. I simply want to tinker with his brain. I think it could give us insight on the character! And there's an easy way to dismiss this conversation: Akechi uses books as a way to appear intelligent. I don't think that's wrong per se, but he does express an interest in psychology and philosophy in his third semester Jazz Jin discussions. His thieves den conversations also point to interests in mythos. Use this as a "Annoying Person Bookshelf" if you'd like, I certainly will.
Aristole's De Anima (Mementos Mission - Chapter 3)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
De Anima, or "On the Soul" [Leob Classical Library], is an examination of the soul and how it functions within the body. It's pretty dense but easily accessible. On page 15,
"There are times when men show all the symptoms of fear without any cause of fear being present. If this is the case, then clearly the affections of the soul are formulae expressed in matter."
Now, I'm not going to read every book, that would be a huge investment. And unfortunately I am still a university student, so I'll stick to the introduction/first chapters or so. But anyways, to the point of the quote, De Anima tends to get metaphysical. Theory time: Akechi has morbid fascinations with the soul. Not only because he well, kills people, but also messes with the restraints on their heart. I choose this quote because it's a good summary of the kind of body horror someone messing with you in the metaverse is like. It's fear and anger unchained, but it manifests in reality through subway accidents... for example.
Hegel's Dialectics (did Akechi misquote Hegel?) - Rank 1
Tumblr media
Look, almost all of these texts are slogs to get through, so I wouldn't blame Akechi for not catching this. Or not reading the 2017 in-universe equivalent of cliffnotes. Note: Dialectics refers to the structure/strategy that Hegel uses, not a text itself. Looking at the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy we see that Hegel never makes mention of the thesis, antithesis, and synthesis idea. Rather, thesis-antithesis-synthesis is a pattern in his arguments. These are also projected by people reading his text, so we can't fully be sure he's using this to formulate most of his arguments. So not only has Akechi forgotten synthesis, the "unification", but also the fact that Hegel doesn't talk about this. Did he read Hegel? Probably. Did he retain the information? Questionable. Do I blame the writers for making the mistake? mmmm. Maybe. If you're asking me to guess which book he read, I would estimate it was The Phenomenology of Spirit [Google Books]. And yes, I'm going to say it was just because of this quote on page 9 that just, screams Black Mask:
"The force of the mind is only as great as expression; its depth only as, as deep as its power to expand and lose itself when spending and giving out its substance."
Maurice Leblanc's Arsène Lupin vs Sherlock Holmes (Herlock Sholmes) (P5A)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This book I read because my curiosity definitely got the better of me. Since I've gotten into Persona 5 again, I've been DYING to read this one, but never got around to it. I think this one is also interesting to look at based on how it was represented in the anime, a crow escaping a bird cage. I can say that this doesn't happen in the book, but this is why I think Akechi is self inserting on Holmes/Sholmes here. Holmes is much freer as a person in this text than Akechi, but also in a deep rivalry with Lupin. Their banter is also pretty reminiscent of what they [Joker and Akechi] have, but... with older language. Longer quote, so here's an image in its place:
Tumblr media
Edit/Correction: Edogawa Ranpo's Kogoro Akechi Series!
As pointed out by a couple people, we can't leave out this series. (credits to @heavy-metal-papillon) I don't know why my mind blanked and left this out. Because when I was doing research for this post someone had mentioned it. Just by name, it should be obvious why this is here! Here is a part of the preface that explains Kogoro Akechi, Arsene Lupin, and their presence in Edogawa's novels (written by Ho-Ling Wong):
Tumblr media
Literature he makes references but doesn't mention (note: headcanon/my opinion)
John Stuart Mill's On Utilitarianism
Tumblr media
Because Akechi knows how to flirt, he recommends philosophy to Joker. [Early Modern Texts] In my eyes he definitely doesn't agree with this philosophy (in fact some quotes are definitely more aligned with Maruki's philosophy). Page 8:
"That’s because the utilitarian standard is not •the agent’s own greatest happiness but •the greatest amount of happiness altogether; and even if it can be doubted whether a noble character is always happier because of its nobleness, such a character certainly makes other people happier, and the world in general gains immensely from its existence."
Yes, Akechi reads Freud. Freud's essays: Beyond the Pleasure Principle & The Ego Principle
In an offhanded comment about Personas in the Thieves Den to Ryuji, Akechi says:
Tumblr media
I love you Akechi. I will not read Freud for you. My love has limits.
Carl Jung's Two Essays on Analytical Psychology
Okay I'm NOT reading this (a lie, i did. [Internet Archive]) but this was the foundational text on the Jungian Archetype of the Persona as well as addressing concepts such as "the will to power." Going to leave this quote from page 78 for you to munch on:
"Logically, the opposite of love is hate, and of Eros, Phobos (fear); but psychologically it is the will to power. Where love reigns, there is no will to power; and where the will to power is paramount, love is lacking. The one is but the shadow of the other..."
There's a couple things here that point to Akechi reading this, but ultimately I just headcanon that he wants to reason through why Personas exist.
Generally reads about the casts Personas!
Similarly to how Joker can read about the other PTs Personas, Akechi does as well. Well, if his morbid discussion about Captain Kidd in the Thieves Den is an indicator. Does this mean Akechi is familiar with the Carmen stage opera? I think so. Besides, it's also the smartest move. Akechi (head)canonically reads lovecraft.
Conclusion
Akechi really enjoys psychology and philosophy, and while some of it seems like he's doing it for attention/to appear smarter, he DOES continue to show interest in third-semester/thieves den. I still can't forgive him for reading Freud.
The List (of ones directly mentioned here)
De Anima, Aristotle
The Phenomenology of Spirit, Hegel
Arsène Lupin vs Sherlock Holmes, Leblanc
On Utilitarianism, John Stuart Mill
Beyond the Pleasure Principle & The Ego Principle, Freud
Two Essays, Carl Jung
The Fiend with Twenty Faces, Edogawa Ranpo
Other notes and headcanons I can't justify giving sections to:
he probably read that fuckass billiards book
definitely stuff on justice. i was just lazy. Some of these texts do cover these ideas, but definitely not all of them
he likes detective novels. he's probably read a fair share of sherlock holmes.
he probably reads adjacent literature to some of the philosophers mentioned (for example: Nietzsche to Jung, Plato to Aristotle)

So, Captain, since you wont tell us why so many people keep leaving your place with bones, how about you tell us about how the 141 spied on Price and Graves on their first date because they dont trust Graves 🧐🕵
Listen, i've told ya once, i've told ya twice, i ain't telling ya again. I don't know about the bones
Soap heard about the date and knew what must be done.
"We have to spy on them." He announced.
Gaz nodded. "Oh, absolutely. What if Graves tries to do something to Price? I don't even get why he agreed to go on the stupid date.”
Ghost, who knew a little more than he was letting on, nodded. "I'm always up for spying."
Soap planned it out, treating it like any other mission. “Operation: Heartbreakers. Our objective: Protect Price from Graves if he tries anything. Secondary objective: Gather information.”
Ghost hummed. "Is all of this really necessary?
"Yes. Ghost, you'll be doing what you do best and blending in. Hiding in the shadows. Gaz has already hacked their phones, brilliantly done by the way, and got their plans. Simple date. Restaurant first and then a movie. Nothing too big. Ghost will be watching in the restaurant and ill be in the movie theater.”
“And why do i have to be in the restaurant?”
“Easy. It’s more difficult to go stealth there. Price chose a rather dim one so it’ll be easy for you to blend in.”
"Dim?" Ghost asked.
"Apparently its mostly candlelit." Gaz shuddered. "Its rather romantic."
"Stupidly romantic for a traitor." Soap nodded. "Gaz, you'll be on the headset. Unfortunately, I was not able to scrounge up cameras but I assumed we could relay the information to each other. If Graves is planning to do anything, we can rendezvous quickly." He nodded and straightened up. "Everyone understand your assignments?"
Gaz nodded. "Mission accepted, Soap."
"Mission accepted." Ghost echoed. What the hell. It would be fun.
Ghost put his headset in and relaxed at the restaurant. He sat opposite of them and far enough away he wouldn't be visible. Instead of his skull mask, he wore a simple back medical one, something common in the area. His hood stayed over his head.
"What are they doing?" Gaz asked, currently at base where they would be coming back to.
"Talking."
"About what?" Soap asked, already in position in the theater.
"I don't know. I'm not close enough."
"Can you get closer?"
"No, Sergeants, I cannot. Now can both of you shut up." Ghost watched them. "Graves just touched his hand."
"Whore."
Ghost laughed softly. "Uh... I think he's tracing the lines in his palm? Oh, Price has a couple of scars on his hand, I think he's touching those."
"Price has scars on his hand?"
"Yeah. Someone stabbed a knife through it once. Left hand so it didn't affect his aim."
"Huh. Never noticed."
"You two should pay more attention then." Ghost watched them talk for a while, only making comments when something interesting happened like Price laughed or when Graves pulled up his sleeve to show the tattoos up and down his arm. Ghost couldn't quite make out what they were from here.
"They seem to be having a good time."
Soap hummed. "Stay on guard. Just in case."
Ghost shook his head and they started to leave. "They are on the move." Price paid for their food.
"Prepare yourself gentleman." Gaz spoke up. "Ghost, make sure to make a quick escape."
Ghost didn't try very hard honestly. They weren't on guard so neither noticed him trailing after him. He watched them buy tickets, noting that Graves paid for them and also got them drinks.
"They seem to be going dutch on the bills." Ghost noted. "Is it better or worse?"
Soap responded quickly. "Slightly better. Price isn't being bribed or taken advantage of it seems."
Ghost hummed. "What movie are they watching?"
"Some pretentious horror movie."
"Which one?"
"I don't know."
Gaz thought about it for a minute. "Yeah, I'm coming in. I refuse to sit out here for two hours bored."
Ghost bought two tickets and handed one of them to Gaz when he got there, walking in with him. They sat on either side of Soap who looked a bit upset his plan was being interrupted. The three of them were four rows behind Price and Graves.
Price put his arms around Graves and Graves leaned into him. They were talking quietly during the commercials.
"They're... kinda cute." Gaz said softly.
Soap frowned. "A little."
Ghost hummed. "Maybe Price will be good for Graves. And vice versa."
"How could Graves possibly good for Price?"
"Makes him happy. He hasn't dated in a while."
Gaz shushed them. "Movie is starting."
They all mostly watched the movie, sparing glances at the two lovebirds. Price leaned in and said something against Graves's ears, hand on the back of his neck. Graves leaned into him, putting his head on Price's shoulder. They were snuggled up closer to each other and Soap hummed.
"You think Price is copping a feel?"
"Shut your dirty fucking mouth." Gaz hissed at him.
"Just saying." Soap muttered.
The movie eventually ended and they quickly left so Price and Graves wouldn't notice them. They waited outside and watched them start to walk.
Price and Graves held hands, their joined hands swinging between them. They were both laughed, bumping into each other. Graves had a small limp due to the tank explosion so he ended up bumbling into Price a few times, looking embarrassed. Price ended up putting his arm around him instead, hand on his hip. Graves blushed brightly and they all heard him.
"What a gentleman, Captain." His southern accent was definitely being played up, he also sounded so flustered.
"Only for you, Commander." Price purred.
Gaz and Soap made a face. Ghost also pulled a face but no one could see it.
"So he hasn't done anything yet." Soap relented. "But I was just worried! Graves is still a bad guy."
They ended up looking around a corner as Price and Graves walked to their hallway.
"Should I walk you to your room or do you think you can find it?" Price smiled at him, the two of them standing right outside his door.
Graves smiled and flirted back. "I think I could find it, though your room definitely seems better right now."
Gaz and Soap gasped. Silently, but still.
Graves leaned up and gave Price a goodnight kiss. "So, a second date?" He sounded ridiculously hopeful, batting his eyelashes.
Ghost went to talk but Price interrupted by kissing Graves, pulling him closer by his belt loops. Price put his hand on his lower back and pulled him flush to his chest. "Stay the night?"
Graves quickly went in Price's room. Price turned directly to them and gave them a thumbs down before following him.
"That somehow hurt worse than if he yelled at us." Soap grumbled.
Gaz looked up at Ghost. "Lieutenant... Is Price a whore?"
"I didn't want to have to tell you guys the truth about him... But yeah. A little." Ghost put his hand on Gaz's shoulder. "I'm sorry."

Neil Hargrove liked it when everything went as it was supposed to. According to the plan, no surprises.
That night he finished work at 6 pm, got into his truck and drove home where his wife was waiting for him to have dinner together. Family dinner.
Two months ago Neil lost his son in the terrible fire that happened in that newly-built mall just outside of Hawkins.
So now Neil's family consisted of his wife Susan and his step-daughter Maxine. If you asked Neil if he loved his family, well, of course he would say yes. What a ridiculous question.
If you asked him if he loved his son, of course, he would say yes as well. It's just that Billy was always very difficult, and Neil had to discipline him ardently, but that's what fathers are for, right? They have to teach their sons respect and responsibility, must show them how to become real men. By all means possible.
Real men don't cry. Neil did not cry when he got the news of his only son's death. He was devastated, of course. Did he ever think that he might have done something wrong along the way?
He didn't. Neil Hargrove was always right.
The evening was going its course, and Neil drove home and parked his truck in the driveway. Susan had been planning to cook roast beef tonight, and Neil was looking forward to having a good dinner, a can of beer after and a baseball game on TV.
When he got out of the truck and headed to the door, something attracted his attention. A car was going down the road, and the car seemed oddly familiar. It also looked .. demolished, as if it drove right out of a scrapyard. One front light was smashed, there was a huge dent on one of the sides, minor dents all over it, the paint seemed to have peeled off. It looked as if the car had been in an accident .. and in a fire. How was it physically possible for this pile of scrap metal to actually drive?? It was dragging itself along the road, an eerie rattling sound of the engine that seemed to be on its last gears. What the hell??
In those rare places where the paint had stayed, Neil saw that it was blue. Deep blue like .. like the sea.
The car was slowly driving in the direction of 5280 Cherry Lane, and Neil stopped in his tracks, changed his course. Curiosity got the better of him. Instead of going inside the house, he went to the road to get a better look. It couldn't be happening. It couldn't be happening, his son Billy was dead, and his car, an invalid, was rotting away on the outskirts of Hawkins, in an abandoned junkyard. What was it doing here, how was it possible for it to drive, who was behind the wheel?? The sun was already reaching the horizon, and it wasn't easy to see in the settling evening twilight..
What Neil saw, turned his blood into ice.
There was no driver. The car .. was going down the road by itself. Like a headless horseman. Neil was still standing on the curb on the sidewalk, looking at the familiar car in sheer horror.
He knew he had to run.
He couldn't move.
The car started to drive faster.
And Neil knew he had to fucking run.
His soles were glued to the asphalt.
A second later, the inconceivable happened. Something straight out of a horror movie. The car - which used to belong to Neil's dead son Billy - the camaro Billy had bought back in California for 350 bucks and had breathed second life into, lovingly repairing everything with his own hands -
The car caught on fire.
Out of the blue, it .. self-ignited? What in god's name was happening?
Neil knew he had to move, to run, to get out of there.
The camaro was driving directly at him at a much faster speed now, and when Neil finally turned on his heels realising that it was already too late, it ran into him, crashing his body, ran him over, crushing his bones,
And drove away, flames slowly dying down, leaving Neil Hargrove's breathless body, having caught fire, behind it.
Tumblr media

Had an idea of Billy's Camaro taking revenge on certain Hawkins residents after Starcourt. (Might've seen a couple of gifs from "Christine"). Want to write a fic. Part 2/3/4

Whumptober Day 20
"People don't change people, time does" / Blanket / Found Family / "You will regret touching them
Honey skipped into Caretaker's office and ran to her father Caretaker. Whumpee tucked in their legs as far as they could, startled by the sudden movement.
"Honey, I've told you to be calm around Whumpee", Caretaker looked at her then at Whumpee.
"I'm sorry", Honey looked over at Whumpee, "I forgot."
"I need you to be able to remember this" Caretaker patted Honey's head, "Whumpee will be with us for a while, I want them to be able to be comfortable here, not stressed."
Honey went to leave, but stopped in front of Whumpee and kneeled down.
Whumpee peaked up from their arms to look at her, they had tear tracks down their face.
"It will be okay", Honey promised, "my daddy makes everything better."
Whumpee looked deeply at Honey. This child was so full of joy and kindness, Whumpee marveled. They mustered all of their strength to make a weak smile and nod.
When Honey left, Caretaker came over to Whumpee and knelt down, "are you doing ok? Are you sure you want to stay on the floor? The couch is very comfortable."
"May I stay with you sir?", Whumpee whispered hoarsely, "I am fine on the floor sir."
"You can absolutely stay in my office with me all you like, I just want to make sure you are comfortable", Caretaker lightly patted Whumpee's arms, "I'm sorry for my daughter startling you though."
"Please don't apologize for them, its refreshing to see someone full of life", Whumpee whispered again.
Caretaker smiled, "I appreciate that." He stood again, "I'm going to start working again right over there, if you need anything at all just let me know. The couch is still up for grabs if you like."
Whumpee nodded, then rested their chin on their arms. They watched Caretaker start working again from the corner of their eye. They then noticed someone peaking in the doorway.
Honey saw that Whumpee had caught her, she gave them a smile and ran off.
Honey came to the office again a bit later, this time quietly walking to Caretaker's side. She noticed Whumpee had dozed off.
"Daddy, will Whumpee be ok?", they whispered.
Caretaker picked Honey up and sat her on their lap, "in time yes, they have been through a lot. They are scared and uncomfortable, and now they have to get used to new people and new surroundings, but I hope that soon they will be able to get comfortable enough here. After that I should be able to start working with them more."
Honey glanced at Whumpee, "but daddy, you're the best, you've helped so many people already, why do you have to wait?"
Caretaker smiled, "well it's not always that easy, taking care of people like how I do is a process. The biggest thing is earning trust. Many that are put in my care have been hurt by others, it's hard for them to trust again. Whumpee was hurt really badly for a long time."
"Is that why they cry a lot?", Honey frowned, "I feel bad when they cry."
"Yes, they had to be really strong and courageous for a long time. Right now though, they are learning they don't have to be strong like that anymore. So they are working through those emotions that had to be buried for so long", Caretaker saw that Whumpee was peaking an eye out at them, "what is something you do when you are feeling sad?", Caretaker asked Honey.
"I cuddle with my teddy and blankie", she smiled and started to hug Caretaker.
He squeezed his daughter with a grin, "that's right. I think mommy was going shopping, how about you see if you can go with her, I think Whumpee will be waking up soon. They might need some help."
Whumpee looked out the door in enough time to see Honey disappear, "do you fear she is to young too know about these horrors?", Whumpee sighed.
Caretaker frowned, "I don't believe in hiding things from my child, unfortunately this world will show her one day how bad it truly is, but I hope by then she will know there is still good in it", Caretaker smiled, "I hope in that instant, her heart will stay golden."
"It will sir", Whumpee sighed, "with the family she has, her heart will stay golden."
"This is your family now as well", Caretaker smiled, "do you need anything?"
"May I go to the bathroom", Whumpee looked up, "please."
"Yes of course you don't have to ask for permission", Caretaker started to stand while talking.
Caretaker reached down a hand to help Whumpee up. Whumpee leaned on Caretaker all the way to the bathroom, and all the way back.
"How about the couch this time? Your butt has to be numb from sitting on the floor", Caretaker led them into his office.
"I'm alright, but if you insist and really want me on your couch, I'll try it. I haven't sat on furniture in a long time", Whumpee limped across the room, Caretaker followed behind happy to see Whumpee take a few steps on their own.
Caretaker braced Whumpee as they sat down. Whumpee was a little wobbly.
"How does it feel,", Caretaker questioned as Whumpee got comfortable.
"It feels good sir, I've only sat on the floor for the last few years", Whumpee grinned slightly, "it feels weird."
Later on, Honey came running to Caretaker's office, "daddy", they whispered. They ushered Caretaker to come with them, and led them to the living room.
Whumpee looked up but buried their head into their sleeves again. They were still on the couch, but fighting everything they had not to jump back down to the floor. This wasn't what they were used to. They could hear Whumper yelling at them.
They were brought back to reality when something was throne over their shoulders. They jumped, but seeing Honey's smiling face kept them from panicking.
Whumpee looked at what was thrown over them, a-a blanket, they looked at Honey in shock. Honey then pulled out a stuffed toy, hugged it, then gave it to Whumpee.
"These are for you", Honey smiled, "my daddy gave me the idea when he asked what I do when I'm sad, mommy helped me pick them out. I thought maybe they would help you."
Whumpee glanced up at the doorway where Caretaker and his wife were watching the exchange with pure joy, then they looked back at Honey.
Tears started to well up in Whumpee's eyes as they took the stuffed toy and hugged it as Honey did. They didn't remember the last time they cuddled a toy, or been wrapped in a blanket.
"Thankyou so much", Whumpee started to cry.
The next hour, Honey showed Whumpee her favorite ways to cuddle a stuffed toy. Caretaker walked back into his office a bit later, having left them to it. He smiled when he saw Whumpee and Honey cuddled up with each other sleeping.
For this moment, Whumpee was at peace.

TMAGP 08 - They Already Named One "The Architecture of Fear"
Okay so obviously everyone is going to go bananas about what happened after the 19 minute mark (its me, I'm everyone, my response was undignified). However, Alex's tweet put me on high alert so lets dig our claws into some incredibly specific inclusions from just the case section of today's episode.
There have always been nods to real-life locations and historical figures across the Magnus-series, but this episode is particularly grounded. The case takes place here-
Tumblr media
-Forton services - a service station that still exists, I assume entirely thanks to its listed status. It's a semi-historical site, which means lots of pictures have been taken of it, including its interior. Behold, the restaurant Terrance Stevens was sucked into, both (likely) the version he saw vs. what he should have expected at the top of the elevator:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I've not been to this place, but it is highly documented. I was able to find out that, just as it is in the show, the button for the restaurant floor has been disabled (unless you have the manufacturer's key). In fact, I think I might have found the exact website as whoever was doing research for this episode (Alex?) because they both mention seating for "700 people, with 101 toilets and 403 parking spaces".
And Terrance Stevens was doing such a good job with his sources up until this point! And I mean that - early in the case he cites (Zumthor, P. 2006), (Augé, M. 1995), (Bachelard, G. 1994) and (Trigg, D. 2012). Now, it'd be super easy for a writer to make up some names and append some years on them and call it a day but- no! Peter Zumthor's lecture Atmospheres: Architectural Environments, Surrounding Objects was published in 2006. We can similarly find Non-Places by Marc Augé, The Poetics of Space by Gaston Bachelard (reprinted in 1994), and The Memory of Place: A Phenomenology of the Uncanny by Dylan Trigg.
Given the emphasis on Smirke's architecture in The Magnus Archives (and the preponderance of liminal spaces as a source of horror, generally) I shouldn't be surprised that the authors have read up on academic papers linking structures to emotions. I was just a little blindsided that they would hand us a "further reading" section.
The real question at the end of all this is: will any of this be on the quiz?
Surely, surely if the writers wanted to be so precise as to get information about which elevator buttons are currently accessible in a real life truck stop correct, there must be something important about Forton services, right? Thankfully, we have an answer, from the Q&A for The Magnus Archives Season 3.
Tumblr media
Well done, I am slightly worried.
Though the details of specific locations may not really really matter, I think the idea that there are nexuses of fear - places that themselves just aren't right - was laid out quite plainly in this episode. Forton services could harbor another gap in reality much like Hilltop Road, and I don't think this will be the last we hear of "hungry architecture."

All I wanted was you
description: You don’t report back after a mission, and it’s sparking something deep inside Miguel (Miguel O’hara c fem. reader)
a/n: OMG THIS IS MY FIRST REQUEST THANK YOU SO MUCH i hope you enjoy this as much as i have enjoyed writing it 🩷 (NOT EDITED)
song inspiration: All I wanted was you by Paramore
Warnings: LOTS AND LOTS ANGST, mentions of blood and injuries
Tumblr media
The beating of his heart transformed into a horror of ticking sounds. The faster it went the more anxious thoughts he got. Why haven’t you reported back yet?
It was suppose to be a simple mission. He wouldn’t have sent you alone if it wasn’t. He wouldn’t have even sent you out at all.
“Maybe you should take some deep breaths and page her again?” Lyla recommended, once again appearing on Miguel’s shoulder for the forty time this hour.
“I’ve tried that already,” he sighed, “it just cuts to static.”
“Are you sure you are doing it right?” Lyla peered over to see, only to shunned off by a furious Miguel.
“You think I don’t know how to work THE FUCKING WATCH?!?” He yelled out as he threw the device across the room, not bothering if or if it didn’t shattered into millions of pieces.
“Not when you’re blinded by your emotions, isn’t that why you made me in the first place you furry face troglodyte?!” She contradicted him, “to help you when you are in this kind of state.”
Miguel rolled his eyes groaning at the AI, not bothering to respond back. He continued his intense search for you, looking at all of your locations last notified in before the signal went out.
————————
You laid back against the wall clutching your stomach as you took deep breathes. Even as you applied pressure to the wound, heavy amounts of red covered your hands and suit leaving you bare to the crisp air.
The mission was suppose to be easy, a simple get in and get out type of formation. You hadn’t realized something was wrong when entering the danger zone, and that was the first warning sign. Your spidy senses were blocked out in this universe, leaving you too vulnerable to serval attacks.
“No! No! No!” You whispered yelled as the sound of innocent civilians screams echoing through the alleyway. You tried to push yourself off the wall, balancing the weight of your body on your wobbly feet.
“Y/n- Y/n are- Y/n are you- are you there?!” A muffled voice asked - you knew it was his, and you so desperately wanted to answer back with a screaming “YES” but it was no use. If you answered now you would lead more danger onto the others. You had to do this by yourself.
You shot a web on your wound, using it as a makeshift band-aid before grabbing a rock and smashing the watch into pieces.
“Sorry Miguel, but I can’t afford another loss.”
——————-
“PINCHE BASURA DE MIERDA!” The keyboard was crushed under his firm grasp. The little letter keys scattered to the floor as Miguel’s knuckles turned white. You had destroyed it.
He was so close - so close to finding your location and you crushed it like a piece of glass.
“Lyla,” he grunted out as he retracted his claws from the destroyed technology. The clock taunting him back with a flick of the hand.
“Lyla!” He bellowed seeing as the AI didn’t appear to his answers. “Lyla I SWEAR TO EVERYTHING GOOD IF YOU DON’T SHOW UP I WILL DISCONNECT YOU!” He let out a shaky breath. The situation reminded him too much of Gabriella, and he just couldn’t let it go down like that again. He just couldn’t.
“What do you want?” She appeared on his shoulder, face turned away from his trembling gaze.
“I need you to call for back up.” His mask already covered his face, yet she could still see the way his eyes turned bloody under the pressure of you not reporting back.
He never admitted out loud that he loved you. He didn’t need to. Everywhere you went, he followed behind you like a lost puppy. Every thing you wanted, he made sure to give it to you in a matter of seconds. It was the love sick stares when you weren’t watching that attracted the attention of other’s curiosity. The only thing holding him back from expressing his love out loud, was the fear of uncertainty, and it was eating him from the inside right now.
“Why don’t you assemble a team right now?” She questioned, hoping she wasn’t thinking what he was thinking. It would be a suicide mission if he went alone without back up.
“I don’t have time for that.” He typed in the coordinates of your last location. “She doesn’t have time for that.” He whispered before running through the portal.
———————————
You didn’t know how long you had been standing there. Bodies laid on the floor like flowers swaying in a forgotten meadow. The adrenaline once keeping you standing now left you on the ground with nothing.
You tried your best. You gave everything you had, yet it wasn’t good enough. Hundreds of lives were taken under a matter of seconds. You couldn’t tell where your blood trail started nor who it stained.
“Y/n!” Goosebumps erupted from your body, covering the skin that wasn’t pouring out your blood. He shouldn’t have come.
“Y/n!” He called out once more swinging to reach you; his mask disappearing. His shaking hands grabbed your shoulders, ignoring the corpses around him, and only focusing on the tears pouring out of your puffy eyes.
“Gracias a Dios que estás bien,” he pulled you into his chest letting you hear his fast beating heart.
“Are y okay? What hap- happened? Did you-“ His voice came in and out, leaving you with a confused face and a pounding headache.
“Lyla!” He called out to her, asking when was back up coming. His eyes never left your face. It wasn’t until a sticky wet feeling tainted his skin that he noticed the wound.
“Fuck! Okay, okay Y/n, sweetheart I need you to keep your eyes open.” He laid you down on the ground gently, pulling apart your suit to see the gash. You let out a painful scream as he applied pressure onto your injury.
“I’m sorry.” His hands began to tremble, making him yell out in frustration. Now was not the time to start panicking.
“Miguel,” you whispered out, placing a hand on his when he didn’t turn your way. “Miguel it’s okay.” You stated, he shook his head scrunching his eyes trying to clear his blurry eyes.
“No it’s not Y/n, you aren’t going to die on me. You can’t.” He cried out as you looked at him sadly. “You can’t give up that easily y/n! YOU CANT DO THAT TO ME!” He screamed applying more pressure, causing you even more pain.
“Miguel you need to let go!” You mumbled out, your conscious fading in and out of the conversation.
“I can’t Y/n! I fucking can’t!” The sound of sirens filled the air. Even as you laid splattered in blood, your hair tangled up and face filled with bruises, he still thought you looked beautiful.
“I’m sorry,” you whispered, your grasp on his hand loosened as your eyes closed for the very last time.
“NO!” Quickly, he began to do chest compressions, the crushing sounds of your ribs gave him no indication of stopping. He didn’t care. He didn’t care. He did not care. He needed you. He couldn’t live without you. All he ever wanted, all he ever needed was dead and he couldn’t cope with that.
Maybe if he had revealed he loved you before it wouldn’t have hurt this much, maybe if he never had fallen for you he wouldn’t have felt anything.
But in the end, all he was always going to loose you.

"Deen die Toten reiten schnell"
Bran - Transylvania 18:46 PM
I feel the need to fill my lungs with air when the carriage finally stops our journey, and I'm relieved just to feel the texture of the ground after long hours concentrating only on the gallop of the horses on the bumpy road. That single unpleasant sound was already starting to get on my nerves, and the coachman kept staring at my suitcase with his scrutinizing gaze. The old man was so interested in my belongings that I couldn't even fall asleep, fearing that he would drop me off halfway just to steal my things.
I was startled by the sound of a knock on the carriage door, but calmed my senses when I saw the old man taking the trouble to open the door. My arrival in Transylvania was less turbulent than I thought possible; I had expected to be silently escorted by some cunning creature from the dense forest in the pitch black, waiting only for my attention to be diverted so that it could try to sink its fangs - or pointed fangs - into my neck, freeing me from my commitment to the Shiba. My dear client, Yuzuha, wouldn't like to know that I'd been slaughtered by a creature of the night before we'd even met in person, and it would be humiliating for my reputation.
I got out of the carriage with light steps, in no hurry, we're not racing against time, we have plenty until nightfall - a few hours, to be precise. I straighten my clothes, allowing myself to hide once again from the cold and the gale, which narrowly missed my top hat. I put the heavy suitcase on the floor, opening the letter that was sent to me half a week ago. I can't deny that a real job is a very exciting experience. Nothing takes away the satisfaction of professionalism.
As soon as I open the somewhat battered paper, I don't even have to strain to read the girl's handwriting - her italics make it easy. The contents read as:
"Dear Miss [Name], I'm sorry to bother you from so far away, but if not me, no one else will. I urgently request your service on behalf of myself and my brothers. The rumor has spread through the city so quickly that not even the church can contain the sick who are anxious and frightened, seeking to calm themselves in the arms of our lord, and everything indicates that there is a creature among us. A vampire, a demon. Like the kind in children's tales where you can sleep with your hands cold between the sheets. For almost two weeks now, farmers have been complaining that their cows have disappeared and their horses have become strangely thin, and… In a short time, residents have often been showing up with symptoms of anemia. Some have even died, pale and cadaverous.
Our village is no longer as safe as it once was.
Sincerely, Yuzuha Shiba"
Below her letter, only the address. She has written everything with great trepidation, because even her beautifully written handwriting has flaws, her handwriting conveys her fear and insecurities, the handwriting is shaky and in some words, Yuzuha must have pressed the pen with an uncommon force. Her fear pushes me to continue investigating. No matter how many times I read it, this letter continues to make me as anxious as the first time I opened the envelope. I won't rest until I find a clear explanation for this cursed cause, which already has a name - vampires - all that's missing is the specific individual who is causing it. Finally, I collected my luggage and started walking through the streets, looking for the young woman's address.
The neighborhood is so quiet that any noise could be considered a bang, a significant example being the boards and barricades on the windows and doors, the newly arrived boxes in the shops have a strong smell of garlic and I've never seen a stall so full of rosaries and crucifixes. As I pass the church sidewalk, I hear the priest's cry - if I hadn't been used to it, I admit I would have been taken by surprise. I approach cautiously, holding my breath and peeking through the gap in the door. Soon, I notice the absence of people on the streets, a group of faithful have gathered in the chapel to say their prayers, not an ordinary group, a large one. Children crying and adults whispering their implicit insecurities with their ragged breaths and lungs burning from holding back their tears of tonture, with their rosaries in hand and raising their trembling fists. I leave my current position and once again follow the original route, this will not last longer than necessary.
Arriving at the address, I check the paper just once more before knocking on the wooden door with a large glass pane in the center, providing a view inside the house, with two simple knocks - I didn't think Yuzuha Shiba was a baker -, waiting for a quick response. I think my prayers were answered, because soon afterwards the young girl opened it - much younger than I thought she was; she was wearing a simple white button-down shirt with ruffles on the shoulders and a moss-green skirt that went down to just below her knees. I gave her a quick nod and a small, subtle smile.
"I'm [Name]" I said directly, and continued: "[Name] Van Helsing, and I am here at your service."
"Thank God!" She said in relief, putting my hands together and thanking the heavens, then giving myself room to pass "Please come in, the weather is getting cold today."
"Thank you, it's very kind of you to welcome me into your home," I said comically, "I don't usually stay at my employers' homes. It could be… dangerous for they."
Not to mention fatal.
"Well, don't be shy," she smiled amusedly, closing the door behind me as I entered at the home, "make yourself at home."
"Okay," I agreed, "but this is a bakery."
"Oh, sorry, my house is upstairs" He corrected "Well, that being the case, make yourself comfortable in the bakery" He smiled in my direction, but his smile was one of tiredness and worry.
The place was cozy, reminiscent of one of those winter chalets. The windows were large and the space was well ventilated, with a view of the street outside - that's good, very good. Behind the main counter, there was only the cashier and a few cupboards with wrapped and ready-made products. The tables equally distributed around the place were charming, but the emptiness made it lonely and gray.
"Shall we get started, then?" I asked, placing my briefcase on the corner of the first table I found in front of me and settling down on the bench, but I was suddenly reprimanded by Yuzuha's hand on my shoulder, and I looked at her in confusion.
"Let's go inside, the faithful will be desperate if see you here."
Without hesitating, I let myself be influenced by her, and so we went up the stairs, stopping walking only when we reached the girl's living room, where I finally took the liberty to ask:
"What are people doing in church?" I asked as the girl put the cups away on the coffee table, setting the tray aside. My question must have had a strong impact on her, I noticed when she raised her eyes in concern: "Shouldn't they be keeping to themselves at home? Like you."
"Well…" he swallowed, sitting down on the sofa, "my brother Taiju is one of the faithful of the church, and everyone prefers to believe that God's will will protect them."
"Why didn't you look for an exorcist then?" I asked curiously, as Yuzuha handed me the cup she had brought.
"They think that spending money hiring people to solve the problem is very silly. My brother, in particular, says that exorcists and hunters play with the image of God and challenge his power, he says they're phonies who steal from the most gullible. "
"I see." I frowned, sipping the strong coffee that came boiling down my throat, but my anger at these conservative was greater than my fear of burning myself with a simple cup of coffee.
"Don't misunderstand, I hired you myself because I believe in your potential as a hunter, don't take them seriously, please."
"Mrs. Shiba, I'm very professional and I'm not going to let people's ignorance affect the results of our work." I answered directly and she looked at me with surprise, so I offered her a small smile again. "Don't worry, if I'm here, it's because I trust you and, given the circumstances, I'll do my utmost to help you. I didn't leave London to play God."
"Thank you for your help," he smiled back, picking up the empty cups. "Anyway, let's talk more tomorrow, it's getting dark and I'm not going to leave my guest in a bad state. Let me be a good hostess at least."
"You invited me to come in and drink coffee with you," I pointed out, watching her arch her eyebrow from afar, "if that's not good hosting, then I guess I've been living wrong up until now."
She laughed, rolled her eyes and walked off. I had to go after her to stop my curiosity.
"Why are you laughing? Was that funny?"
Tumblr media
As soon as I had finished folding my coat, I placed it gently on the bed; Yuzuha insisted that she would welcome me into her home, according to her, it was her job as "hostess". We didn't argue about it, as I prefer to avoid unnecessary conflicts, but I was still hesitant about her decision, without even realizing it I could be putting her life and the lives of her loved ones in danger. But there's nothing i can do, you don't argue with stubborn people. Outside, the lights of the lamps illuminated the dark streets, and consequently, the glow of their flames reflected through the bedroom window, bringing me a nostalgic air of London - now far enough away to keep me locked into my new goals. I was startled when I heard the door latch turn abruptly, narrowly missing the small candle holder. But as soon as I realized who it was, I let my guard down. The girl stared at me for a few seconds before speaking:
"We're having dinner in a few minutes," she said, smiling gently, "my little brother will be here soon. Come along. "
After that, she left and walked to where the kitchen was supposed to be. In an impulsive act, I followed her wherever she went, hoping to be helped to do something, but everything was already done; her silverware properly organized on the dining table and the candles lit, strategically distributed around the kitchen, hoping to conserve lighting and save candles at the same time.
Another doorknob turned and I looked expectantly at the front door. All I found, however, was a tall man with long hair in a ponytail and small cut running from his lower lip to his upper lip, these lips having raised a rather warm smile - somewhat controversial given that he was holding an axe on his shoulder.
"Hakkai!" Yuzuha called out excitedly, going to meet the boy, but her excitement had been replaced by worry as soon as she grabbed her brother's ear "What did I tell you yesterday?! Don't you know how dangerous it is to be out at that hour?"
she asked exasperatedly.
"Calm down! Look, I'm fine!" He tried to convince her, but she still looked serious. And as soon as he rested her gaze on me, changed the subject to get around the sermon, "Is… A friend of yours?"
It was an embarrassing subject and one of the many reasons why i don't sleep in other people's houses - God, bless the inns and hotels. Now I was standing by the chair, staring at the floor, looking for some comfort.
"This is miss [Name]," Yuzuha replied, so I felt it was time to take the first step on my own. I approached the door and extended my hand in a casual greeting, which was quickly met with "she's spending the night with us tonight."
"It's a pleasure to meet you, Mr. Shiba." I nodded briefly and bowed.
"There's no need for such formality," he said, scratching the back of his head. "Welcome to Transylvania, miss."
I nodded again, then returned the comfortable smile.
"Now let's go to the table, I'm starving!" He warned, setting off towards the dining table, followed by Yuzuha, who quickly settled down next to the brunette.
"So, [Name], are you in town on business? Traveling?" Hakkai's question left me very indecisive and confused. I already had it in my mind that Yuzuha had selected my services on the sly, but not for a second did I think that even his brothers were unaware.
I thought for a few seconds, trying to come up with an excuse, but nothing came to mind, it was as if my ability to lie and the chance that I was putting a family in danger were fighting a great battle in my subconscious, where I slowly surrendered to reason and honesty - damn common sense - so I answered straight away:
"I'm here to hunt the vampire." I replied simplistically, while splitting the bread in two to dip it in the soup.
Hakkai, who was swallowing his food, choked on my comment and Yuzuha came to his rescue with a glass of water. I certainly shocked him. After all, you don't have dinner with a monster hunter every day. I bit into the bread with a certain brutality, which went unnoticed, luckily for me. The truth is that bringing up the subject of the 'vampire' only makes me more anxious and instigated to invade the Count's castle, which, according to rumors, is home to the bloodthirsty demon - but nothing confirms the information, since it's entirely based on theories and guesswork. Which only makes me agree more and more with myself that staying in this house wasn't the most rational decision I've ever made.
"How are you going to hunt the vampire? It's impossible!"
"Hakkai!" His sister scolded him.
"But I'm only saying this for her own good," he retorted, "not even exorcists or priests have the courage to hunt it down, you can't let her go out alone to hunt a vampire!"
"Hakkai, miss [Name] knows what he's doing!" The girl slammed both hands on the table, hard enough to silence her brother "No wonder she's a Van…"
"He's right." I agreed, getting up from my chair. "It's true that I'm just a foreigner who has no idea of my enemy's capabilities. So…"
I paused to pick something up from under the table, and in the meantime neither of them dared to say anything, they just waited patiently, anxious at the silence that had settled in the room; it wasn't difficult to hear the disruption in their breathing. Then I finished my speech:
"Tell me everything you know to help me catch the creature."
From under the table, I took out the heavy suitcase and placed it on the table. Both Shiba were curious about the contents, but were satisfied with my serious expression.
"Right…" Yuzuha relented, returning to her seat at the table "Hakkai, I'll be honest with you. I called her."
"How?" He stared at her in disbelief.
"I had no choice! If we continued to live under Taiju's orders, we'd end up dead! Like the cows in the Tachibana family pasture!"
"I understand! Calme down!" He readied himself to answer her, holding her shoulders calmly as her eyes grew watery just from exposing the truth that had weighed so heavily on her shoulders. "You know I'll support all your decisions. Your attitude was very brave, Yuzuha. But… Next time, let me know in advance, I'll listen to you no matter what."
He smiled understandingly as he stroked her hair. All I did was watch from afar and wait, until they turned to me, where I understood that they were ready to collaborate this time.
"The last time he showed up was last week," Hakkai explained, now that everyone at the table was tense, I listened attentively to what the Shiba brothers had to tell me, any information was valuable. "On Saturday, if I'm not mistaken, Hinata said that he would arrive late on Sunday, because he had to make a trip alone to buy what he needed for the farm animals. And when he arrived on Sunday morning, two of his cows were lying dead in the pasture. They were so thin and pale that they looked like crushed rotten fruit."
I saw Yuzuha put her hand under her mouth to hold back the disgust rising in her throat.
"It seems that your mother and brother are fine, but your father… He's not back from his trip yet," Yuzuka added, and I paid close attention, "but as she'd rather not risk it, he decided to rent a room in an inn in town. Now the farm and the animals are only living off the pasture where they left them so they wouldn't starve to death, but the likelihood of them being alive is extremely low at this point. Not counting the horses from a nearby farm, the animals that have survived are sick so far."
"I'm surprised the vampire didn't try to kill the girl's family… " I said in a whisper, and they both looked at me startled and then I realized my mistake "oh, sorry, sorry for my lack of sensitivity, I just thought it was really strange. "
"No, it's okay, even I was surprised the vampire didn't try to attack them in the middle of the night," Yuzuha replied, putting her arms together as she stared at the candle and its distorting flame. "A woman and her child alone and defenceless, that's strange... "
"On my journey, I heard various rumors about the Count's castle," I stared at them, looking for any trace of conceit in their eyes, "do you think the vampire might still be there?"
I asked, but then added:
"But before you answer, I want you to keep in mind that this could be a once-in-a-lifetime chance, because until then he doesn't know I exist or that I'm after him. And if they do, they won't let their guard down for a second. So? Can you confirm this information?"
I knew I was putting them under pressure, but it was necessary. While we're talking, someone could be dying from the anemia acquired after the attack.
"'Confirm' would be a very precise term," Hakkai replied, taking my attention.
"What do you mean?"
"After the deaths in the pasture, the men from the trade went out to explore the forest during the day, including me and Hanagaki, Miss Tachibana's betrothed," Yuzuha frowned, hinting that this too had been kept secret until then."We found cuts in the trees and some fresh blood stains in the vicinity of the castle, nothing too significant, but it suggests that he's there."
"That was very helpful," I replied sincerely, "I'll keep that in mind, thank you."
"Speaking of vampires, where did Taiju go?" Hakkai asked, directing her gaze at her older sister, questioning.
She didn't care either, as long as the wretch turned up alive, everything was fine.
"He's going to stay in the church until daylight" His tone was slurred, with a roll of his eyes to finish off his displeasure "Kokonoi and Seishu really are poor bastards."
The brunette almost spat everything out because he wanted to laugh, but he covered his mouth before disaster struck. Yuzuha glared at him angrily.
"Sorry, it was unavoidable."
"Silly."
And he rolled his eyes again before bursting into laughter.

01h50 In the middle of the night
I woke up startled after hearing the window bang, but not a loud bang, something that could only wake me up, so I searched all the corners, as I pulled my sweater over my body and approached the window to close it. After that fright, I couldn't sleep a wink and I thought I could get up right now and find the vampire, but I gave in to tiredness for the moment; I hadn't rested the day before and I could barely doze on the way to Bran. I sat on the bed with the sheets covering my bare legs as I stared at the window and the darkness that surrounded the city. At least the yellowish glow kept me company in the lonely, morbid dawn. The vampire could be anywhere, in any house, in any corner of this city, and knowing that, I can't sleep. The damned won't leave any gaps. I need to act, and fast!
I paced back and forth, trying to pass the time, but I couldn't stand staring at the wood-paneled ceiling and the - now - closed curtains any longer.
I hurriedly put on my clothes and shoes. I picked up my suitcase and threw the dark cloak over my shoulders before leaving. I had to get through the window to make as little noise as possible, so I tied the sheets one by one and fastened them to the foot of the bed, before throwing myself off the window ledge, checking that I was securely tied and finally jumping.
And as Yuzuha had said: "the weather is getting colder".
I thought it was just a cordial comment to invite me into her house, but looking at the experience now I can say, the weather really is getting colder. I wandered through the streets, running down the alleyway between the houses - I needed a safe way to get to the forest. I ducked into an alleyway facing the street, hiding behind the house while staring at the stone floor that led to a path to the church in the distance. Not too close, but not too far either.
I clenched my jaw.
I ran past once more, and with the door open, I saw the inside of the chapel; all the faithful gathered, however, holding bladed weapons and flaming torches. I immediately realized what this was all about: the fools were planning to storm the castle, without even having the necessary preparation.
Now was not the time to waste thinking about what to do. I ran back to where the entrance to the town was supposed to be, then I remembered: There were no loose horses here.
Now behind a carriage, I noticed that the coachman was fast asleep, with his neck hanging over the wooden seat and a hat covering his eyes. I moved closer to check, and yes, he was definitely asleep. I placed the suitcase on the seat, very slowly, and as soon as I'd finished, I covered his face even more. I unceremoniously pushed him out of the wagon, and he jumped up and started shouting "You bastard, get back with my wagon!" and he continued shouting to the four winds, but I didn't hear the rest of the sentence, because I was already far into the forest, advancing through the darkness as the wagon rattled, my only source of light being the lamps hanging next to both windows.
Ahead, only the blackened ground and the hooves of the animals. I could feel the carriage jumping between the small stones so fast, if I kept going at this mad pace I'd wipe out the wheels in a matter of minutes.
The two brown horses were just following the road, galloping fast and with no idea of what might come next; a tree trunk, a rock or a hungry wolf at worst. I held on tightly to the ropes.
Little by little, I could see the castle and its stone towers rising between the trees. My heart was beating fast in my chest, so fast that I couldn't hold back the cynical smile that was gradually taking over the corner of my lips. Soon, the damned aristocrat of the night would be killed by my own hands. I can already feel the splinters of the wooden stake going through his heart as I stab him in the back.
By now, my hair was no longer covered by the cloak, in fact, it was only after all this wind that I noticed it was no longer tied around my shoulders, it had come loose and was flying away. Now, I'm mentally grateful that the skirt of my dress is long. Depending on the circumstances, I could be freezing to death, but with the adrenaline coursing through my veins, my blood is hotter than ever. A few more turbulent steps and I'll reach my destination, I just need to climb the hill and keep going straight, and I'll find what I'm looking for.
I smile contemptuously and continue towards the castela, feeling a few drops of rain falling on my face.
it will be bloody.
Tumblr media
"Takashi…" The blond man call.
The aristocrat was sitting in the armchair near the fireplace, watching the flames crackle and make pops, pops that he found satisfying to his ears sensitive to the lowest noises and whispers. The blond boy was coming down the stairs when he spotted him, it had been almost a week and nothing, he didn't go out again to riot in the town, he just stood around the castle watching the bats flying and the villagers devoting their faith as they let themselves be consumed by the deepest chaos and the tremor of fear. Takashi no longer showed any signs of interest in what was going on outside, his interest was focused solely on the fireplace, where he tried to familiarize himself with the warmth - without much success - in order to feel more alive, more human.
The melancholy aristocrat of the night had long, lilac hair falling over his cheekbones, and was gently stroking his nose, something velvety and sweet, like the touch of loving human hands.
"What is it, Peh-Yan?" He asked adamantly, this time there was no sign of voracity in his gruff tone of voice, he was too bored, even more so after being shot by a farmer near the forest - the shotgun blast had hit him right in the ribs. His tailor's vest was now covered in crimson, and he hated that dirt on his fine clothes, so he made a point of walking with that closed cloak, wherever he went. The cloak was heavy and with a silver clasp on the front, it made him feel less helpless, less fragile and vulnerable.
If there was one thing Takashi hated, it was vulnerability, more specifically, his vulnerability. He hated looking weak, and that wound - freshly healed - was a fine example of weakness. He had terrorized countless people in his many centuries of life, and now, awakened from a long rest, he saw that he lacked what it took to reign again.
He swept his gaze in Peh-Yan's direction – his long-time friend – responding to his call amid the darkness that surrounded them.
"Do we have guests for tonight?" He approached the leather sofa and casually tossed his long black coat onto its arm.
"No," Came the straightforward reply.
Takashi had already noticed the turbulent and fast approach of something or someone to the castle; it hadn't been a very challenging task. Initially, he thought it could be a werewolf. However, it seemed to be something smaller, much smaller, yet the voracity and the desire for killing were comparable to that of a monster, leaving him intrigued. And the scent was somewhat... excentric. It had been many eras since Takashi had sensed such a palpable and delicious aroma; it was like catching the scent of the gods' feast a few miles away. If he concentrated well, he could even hear the vibrations of a little heart of the little mouse running swiftly towards the lion's mouth.
He felt his mouth salivate.
"So it means we have intruders," Peh-Yan commented with a sigh, closing his eyes and massaging the space between his eyes.
"From what I can see..." He flashed an arrogant smile, lazily recomposing his posture, "Excellent. I'm hungry."
"Don't overdo it."
"You're asking the wrong person for that, my dear friend."

there are a lot of reasons i'm really, really impressed by how well sdmi portrayed the dynamic of an abusive relationship with pericles and ricky, and one of the big ones is how accurately they show what it looks like when abuse starts to escalate.
the extent of that is yet another thing that'll take a longpost of its own to go into, because it spans like.... the entire arc of their relationship in the show. but one thing that stands out to me in particular is their portrayal of the massive red flag that is a partner trotting out bigoted behavior against a group you're in. especially insults, and especially directed right at you.
Tumblr media
this show has a LOT of fatphobia, jesus christ does it ever, and there are certainly some fatphobic tropes going on with ricky; but i've always been surprised and impressed by how many of the nastier ones they avoided, especially considering his role in the story and what his arc is about.
he is a major, nuanced character whose trauma is treated with full weight and sincerity. it's implied that his body type changed the way it did due to the trauma he went through when he was younger, and the ensuing mental illness, which is a pretty realistic experience for a lot of people. the things that happen to him are played for full tragedy and horror, when it would have been so, so easy for them to make light of it because Tee Hee Fat Guy and Tee Hee Male Abuse Victims Funnee. despite how his whole thing involves corporate greed, they don't go the route of portraying him as Gluttonous and Hedonistic; if anything he is very obviously not using all that money for even basic physical self-care, and the only time we ever see him eating anything it's when he's drinking wine grape juice with pericles. which, like, there's issues to be unpacked with that too, but jesus christ it's an improvement over what usually happens with characters like him.
he's a fat queer man who isn't degendered or made feminine in a mocking and/or predatory way. (there's nothing wrong with feminine fat queer men and they need more non-shitty rep, please and thank you god, but there is a lot of nastiness in the tropes they're often used for in mainstream media, and one of those tropes is when people consider 'fat queer man' and 'masc' to be oxymorons.) no one ever once calls him ugly; if anything multiple people in his life think he's attractive and desirable, for better or for worse. no one body-shames him. and no one ever mentions his weight.
except pericles.
'The Horrible Herd' and 'The Devouring' are two halves of a whole here, re: escalation of abuse. 'Devouring' is when the abuser goes full mask off and shit hits the fan; 'Horrible Herd' is the wind-up before the punch. HH is when ricky realizes things are getting Bad and he needs to put a stop to this now, and Devouring shows what happens when he tries, because by the point where it's gotten bad enough to give him a wakeup call it's already too late. it's how abusive relationships tend to go, and it's chillingly accurate.
and what's one of the things pericles says during Horrible Herd when that punch is winding up? something no one's ever said before now, including him? 'you pudding-faced dummkopf.'
he body-shames him. he insults his weight, and that's a major turning point. bigotry is something that's often there to some degree from the start, but not always, because some abusers are good at hiding things like that until they're confident they've got you where they want you. the message with ricky and pericles is loud and clear: when this happens, the walls are dripping blood. get out.
(if you can. and be careful when you try.)
when this show is good, it is really, truly good. god damn.

Invader Zim Deathmatch:
ROUND 2, FIGHT 16:
INVADER LARB VS TAK!
Tumblr media
The rules are as follows:
1. We’re assuming that both participants actively want and are willing to kill each other unless actively specified otherwise (for example: Chammy Wamboo).
2. The fight must be one on one so no outside help is allowed, but prep time is allowed.
3. The rule for prep time is that if one contestant gets prep time, the other contestant gets an equal amount of prep time as well.
[Masterpost]
Information about both contestants (who they are, powers and abilities, etc) can be found under the cut.
Contestant Stats:
Invader Larb:
“Nap-Lord of the most comfortable couch”
Appearances:
Invader Larb appears or is at least mentioned several times throughout the show and comics
Powers and abilities:
Irken physiology (can lift over 3 times their body weight and is extremely durable)
PAK (PAK legs, PAK lasers, shield generator, all the things an Irken PAK can do)
Elite military training (Larb is an Invader, meaning that he went through irken military training and became an elite soldier before going through Invader training. This means that Larb has the combat skills of an elite soldier)
Invader training (as an Invader, Larb is trained in espionage, stealth, sabotage, and other invader-related things)
Fun Fact (important):
Larb is an extremely successful Invader with a lot of conquered planets under his belt, but it’s worth pointing out that his accomplishments aren’t as impressive as they seem. As pointed out by Zim, Larb got all the easiest planets to conquer (even his initial planet of Vort, despite being extremely important, wouldn’t be that much of a challenge to conquer since Vortians and Irkens were on at least somewhat decently good terms at the time. Larb probably didn’t even need a disguise) and one of the planets in his list of accomplishments (Blorch) wasn’t even conquered by him. Larb’s actual invader prowess is a lot less impressive than it seems, with him conquering a lot of really easy planets and no really difficult ones to essentially pad out his score.
Tak:
“Dirtlord of Dirt with a planned 70 year reign”
Appearances:
Tak appears in the episode “Tak; The Hideous New Girl” and has a cameo appearance in Dookie Loop Horror.
Powers and abilities:
Irken physiology (can lift over 3 times their body weight and is extremely durable)
PAK (PAK legs, PAK lasers, shield generator, all the things an Irken PAK can do)
Elite military training (Tak went through irken military training, but fell just barely short of becoming an elite soldier because she missed the final test. This means that Tak has roughly the combat skills of an elite soldier)
Holograms (Tak has the ability to create holograms, letting her turn invisible and disguise herself. However, we never see Tak affect anything but herself with these holograms, implying that her holograms are limited to just covering her)
Mind Control/Wipe (using her holographic tech, Tak can compel creatures to do things. She can also wipe memories with the same tech. However, creatures of even average intelligence or greater are completely immune to its effects, meaning that it’s only effective on already stupid creatures. Even Zim is immune)
Fun Fact:
Out of universe, Tak is cursed. I mean it. Every time she tries to appear in an Episode/Comic/Movie/etc, something stops her. The show was cancelled before she could appear in any more episodes (which was supposed to happen), a last second animation error kept her out of ETF, copyright issues and Nickelodeon meddling kept her out of all the comics but the last one where she gets a one panel cameo (the same thing happened to Skoodge there). It’s almost like the universe actively doesn’t want Tak to have more appearances.

Writing and Rewriting Bracknell Horror
Tumblr media
So here's a terrible secret: in 2019, hot on the heels of the original Moonlight on Roseville Beach zine, I put some notes for a little adventure called "The Bracknell Horror." I had no illusions that it was a great investigation scenario. Still, it showed off a few things about Roseville Beach, including places and people in the town as well as the queer people who lived/visited there. It went to a location inside the setting without requiring deep lore, added some jokey Easter Egg references to Lovecraft's The Whisperer in Darkness, and included some comically easy to use alien tech.
The problem was, I didn't really like it.
People at con sessions had fun, but there was nothing particularly special or interesting about the scenario itself, and any scenario would have been great in its place. Also, while I like to say Roseville Beach is a game of "horror comedy," there wasn't much actual horror here other than some Lovecraft references. That's also true of my other Roseville Beach scenario "The Haunting of Flora Bly," though the book has four more scenarios that are richer in horror potential.
Tumblr media
But this summer, just before running it at A Weekend with Good Friends, I rewrote it. I talked about some of those rewrites on my blog just after the first run-through, but more have come up as I've continued to playtest this.
First, while the initial scenario centered around a wealthy occultist-adventurer named Simon Mathers, the revision has greatly warped him from that initial vision. In the early drafts, he was an occultist willing to give Dreamlands entities the bodies of Roseville Beach residents in return for access to the Dreamlands. In the new one, he's returning to our reality after 20+ years in the Dreamlands, hoping to find a body for himself (the temporary one he constructed is collapsing) and his two Dreamlands familiars.
In the original, the cult-like group of followers worked for Mathers and planned to keep doing so. In the new, none of them like each other, and each of them have their own reasons for working with him (and one might even try to kill him).
Tumblr media
Third, I let some of my OSR influences show. Beyond making each of the named NPCs a faction of one, I've also added some NPC rivals (all of whom might end up becoming collaborators) who also all have their own motivations and agendas for finding out what Mathers' cult is up to.
Finally, while the original notes told GMs to pull from the PCs troubles and connections to determine who Mathers' cultists have captured, the new one includes a chance to target the PCs themselves, giving at least some of them a chance to sneak in and explore the Bracknell while the cult is setting up the ritual, adds some specific NPCs the cult targets, asking instead how the PCs and their contacts/troubles connect them with those people, giving their troubles and connections a motivation to insist on coming along whether they'll be helpful or not.
Tumblr media
Dai Shugars, Roseville Beach's art director and visual designer, has put together some incredible maps that allowed me to spend less wordcount describing the space and more giving info on NPCs, creating news stories and book snippets that can serve as physical clues, and creating a better sense of how the Doom Clock progresses.
The text will come to Itch for slowfunding next Tuesday, and the final zine will include the adventure, pregens, new strange events that tie to this mystery, and the basic rules of play, so you can try it out even if you don't already own Moonlight on Roseville Beach. Think of it like a horror-comedy investigation version of a Fighting Fantasy Game Book, but maybe gayer.
This is my chance to draft and preview some of what's coming. You can pick up Moonlight on Roseville Beach (Itch | DriveThru | Spear Witch | IPR) and the current two-issue zine bundle (Itch | DriveThru), or just follow-along with the zine project that will get bundled up in Dim All the Lights. Or you can back our upcoming reprint and hardbacks Kickstarter!

okay. im going to talk about the fnaf movie.
Tumblr media
SPOILERS UNDER READ MORE!!!
overall, i thought it was very good. somehow making a whole series of a video game condensed into 1.5 hrs is not something easy to do. i think with what they were working with, they executed it pretty well. costume design was superb, and the acting from josh hutcherson was amazing.
that being said, i did find some scenes didn't belong. for example the fort scene, though i'm sure many people have pointed that out already.
i felt like they were trying to tow the line between silly/cute and scary/suspenseful, but in my opinion i don't think they needed to do that? i think if they leaned in fully to the horror aspect it would have still been a very enjoyable experience.
the scenes with vanessa disappointed me, just a bit. it felt like she was only there to progress the story/exposition. and the fucking fort scene with her... in that scene, vanessa is like "oh freddy fazbears' is so fun yayayayay" and then literally in the next scene she's telling mike "if you ever come back here IM GOING TO SHOOT YOU" ???????????? like why? what did mike even do?
the old bf made an observation that william afton was just straight up not fleshed out, at least not as much as either one of us had hoped.
i personally think if they had just included like... a 5 minute scene of william afton on his killing spree (without outright showing william afton), it would have done alot for his character. i felt like he was just kind of thrown in there towards the end, which makes me sad bc william afton is such a unique character with sooo much backstory integral to the lore of fnaf, and it just felt like he was alluded to the whole movie? idk.
there were some questionable moments. it was funny how freddy literally just murders the aunt and no one even questions it? mike would have come home to a literal corpse in his house, how does he explain that to the police?
and it made me sad how little they showed of foxy. :( foxy is my all time favorite (i literally brought a giant stuffed foxy plush with me to the movie) and it felt like he was the most forgotten animatronic. bonnie seemed to be the main center of attention tbh, he was in almost every scene where the animatronics were. but it makes sense since scott cawthon thinks bonnie is the creepiest animatronic lol.
those are my main criticisms.
but i still loved it, very much so!
when the matpat cameo came on screen... it was a shocker. i gasped so loud. the people in the movie theater literally laughed at me lol bc i gasped SO LOUD, I COULDNT HELP IT i was so shocked. AND WHEN HE SAID ITS ONLY A THEORY???? i ate it up. idc if it's cheesy, I ATE IT UP.
also i thought it was cool that the movie is (i think but could be wrong) five nights long! a little easter egg that i thought was neat. the old bf pointed this out to me.
another nice touch is in the beginning of the movie when mike is reading that dream theory book. a good callback to matpat's dream theory on fnaf (you know the one). and it's also a good way to tie in what's currently happening to mike with his dreams in the movie.
i really appreciated the subtle little ways they tied in the movie with the games, like the little "it's me" in the mirror during the scene with mike in the security room. and foxy's humming!!!! i loved it i loved it i loved it! the little noises they used from the game made me so happy!
but yeah. i'll stop ranting bc i can go on forever lol. while it had it's flaws, i don't think they affected the overarching storyline.
this is it my gamers. eight years in the making, and this is the end result.
Tumblr media
my score? 4 cupcakes out of 5. :>

Last Twilight ภาพนายไม่เคยลืม Ep 1
I watched this last night and was pleasantly surprised! I trust P'Aof with narratives of queerness and with social critique, but disability to this extent is a new topic for him and his team to tackle as far as I can tell, and it's very very easy to catch me on the wrong foot with that even without going to the extent of, say, Fighting Mr Second. Yes, I know Moonlight Chicken treated Heart really well. still. WORRIED.
I mentioned that the final trailer reminded me a little of French comedy-drama Intouchables (2011), especially the interview scenes. I got those same vibes while watching the actual scenes from the show, rather than the trailer, but in a good way -- and already, this is clearly its own thing.
oh I like the blur on the advisory message
urgh what's with this flashiness, that's not great, this ep needs a seizure risk warning (flashing black/white lights right after the adivsory message ends until about 00:00:33)
this seems like a horror film
Film!!
I bet P'Aof quizzed Mark extensively for this
ffs Day, call a break
the tone of this is so different from what I expected and I think I like it
oh wait I know her face
Phawjai, huh?
sisters named Rung just do not have a good track record in these shows
he's "ba~"-ing that dude, WHAT. that does not sound like a strategy that's likely to lead to success with your probation officer, just saying
he's literally out on probation, huh, they REALLY leaned into that with the ankle bracelet and everything.
timeskip?
oh c'mon clearly-not-professor-Pichai
he's going to just fix the chair, isn't he
CALLED IT
man this show does already not pull its punches
I like that they at least tried with the five o clock shadow on Jimmy. He still looks like a model, but they clearly TRIED.
love to see Mawk among all the social worker types
wait wait wait I know glasses, why do I know glasses
they're ALL TALKING LIKE HE'S NOT HERE what the FUCK
adsfasdfasdfasdfasdfadsfasdfasdfasdfsd wow the SHADE I love it
asdfsaf RIGHT BACK AT HIM I love this
Oh god Day is an ASSHOLE and I love it
Night hates himmm and I get it
does Day not even realise he's there on that lift?!
wow lady that's unprofessional
holy shit I get that, on a meta level, this is for the exposition, but exposing someone's medical history like that?! YIKES.
oof
loaded sibling relationship there
wow he's an ASSHOLE
Annnd Night's an ass right back but uh. I kinda get it.
oooh he's in visible distance
I guess Mawk is just used to dealng with assholes, huh
oh my GOD I love this le petit prince quoting bit??? did not expect that!
Mark looks his actual age as night, love that for him
for a second there I forgot that not all doors lock automatically like the hotel doors of all those "apartments" or "dorms" we see and was like, wait, he can just walk back in? just like that?
OH
and that's the foundation: Mawk trusts Day to do things for himself
this mum does NOT look old enough to have kids Sea and Mark's age, what's her secret
I really enjoyed that! strong first episode, already not pulling any punches on the social commentary. I really enjoyed everyone's acting here-- Jimmy especially seems to have improved a lot, I look forward to seeing where this goes.
Now! to unblock the tag and see what everyone else is saying :D

Audio Drama Sunday
Subtitle: Cry goes slightly off-topic
For a while, I didn't get much of a chance to do anything but edit and write so listening to other shows was off the cards. Recently I've been trying to get back into it and it's given me the chance to get back in touch with some people and see what they've been up to creative-wise. So, here's my list of recent shows:
DO YOU COPY?
I haven't seen many people talk about this show outside of the creators but with season one out, it's an easy binge. It follows the audio logs of several different groups of people who stayed behind after a National Park's closure. The cast is small and easy to follow and the voices are distinguishable. It's set in a more supernatural America with a mystery void that seems to distort reality and contain cryptid-like creatures. Though some themes are familiar, the story feels original and I've enjoyed listening.
UNIVERSE 9/5
It's your alternate universe people switch out tropes, made queer sci-fi. The posting schedule feels a little random and the discord server seems to have already created its own community around art and animation but it's hard to tell where it's going quite yet with only 2 episodes out. It's a change of pace to all the horror shows I'm used to with being very much not horror and quite light hearted but I am enjoying it all the same.
YET ANOTHER DATING APP
It talks of a new dating app that more specific than ever before. It gives casual banter with a sci-fi twist in a similar vibe to LIFE WITH LEO(H) which I enjoyed. Yet again with only 2 episodes out it's hard to get the whole picture. It's a small cast with good chemistry and the sound design has been nice so far. I'm interested to see where it leads.

Hello!!!! I've been loving your art and Eli content recently and your most recent piece of the 'Returned 'Embrace' was gorgeous! Question, what's the story behind it??? Who is the other person with them, I'm so curious hehehehe
Asking about my oc???? Thank you so much 🥺
The short answer, that is Eli’s sire!! The vampire who turned him.
Eli diablerized her (drank so deeply that he consumed her soul) some years after his embrace.
A longer more rambling answer and extra art!! Under the cut
With this piece I really wanted to emphasize the the mixture of horror and intimacy of the moment. Eli was deeply obsessed with her, to the point where all he wanted was to be a part of her and for her to be a part of him.
At first glance, it’s almost a lovers embrace, but then you see how forceful he’s being, yanking her head back and holding her hand so tightly that his fingers break the skin. Eli doesn’t know actual selfless love, everything that he is and does, much like vampirism itself, is ultimately selfish. He thinks he loves her and loves him equally, but in the end he has to force her to be still.
I like to include a lot of quiet symbolism for myself, like the background is a stark white void. Someone tagged this piece as eyestrain and i wanted to say good!! It should be hard to look at. It’s a murder after all. But it’s also a private moment, nothing else matters to either of them. They are completely focused on each other. Her final death, and his first diablerie. The loss of his humanity and her unlife.
Even in they way they’re sitting, i wanted to scream intimacy. He crowds her, but not entirely. She sits in his lap while he sits on his heels, it’s not an easy position to get up from. She went into this position willingly, having kept him under her and subservient for years through use of a blood bond. The blood bond doesn’t just force loyalty, but intense feelings as well. He was really into her already before the bond, but the trauma inflicted by his aggressive turning seen here (trigger warning for old art and gore) was what really broke his mind, especially when afterwards she used the bond to convince him that she tore out his throat because she loved him. All of it twisted what love was in his mind, he was lil obsessive before but now he was WAY WORSE.
She built it up more and more until she created a monster who would do anything to be with her, relying upon the inherent safety of the bond and unaware it was the bond itself that would push him into wanting to consume her. It wasn’t hurting her or even against her wishes in his mind, because she had convinced him fully of how much she loved him and how violence was the way to show it so why wouldnt she want this?
Obviously it was a lie, but he continues to center his delusions around it to this day. He wants SO BADLY to be loved but its an impossible wish because Eli doesnt know what it means to actually love someone.
I actually drew a follow up to this piece, but didnt post it because i felt like it was too on the nose and didnt quite imply the feeling i wanted from it. Its called Shes gone and now you have to face her lies alone.
